CART is a neuropeptide that appears to play an important role in a variety of physiological processes. The major research focus into the function of CART peptide has been on feeding behavior, modulation of mesolimbic dopamine, and actions of psychostimulant drugs. The neuroanatomic expression profile of CART does however suggest other functions as well, and its presence within the limbic system points to a possible role in emotionality. There are now several published reports which describe a new role for CART as a mediator of anxiety-like behaviors in rodents. This review will summarize these findings and speculate on the mechanisms by which CART might be involved in the modulation of these behaviors. We will also consider what future studies need to be done to further clarify the role of this peptide in anxiety.  相似文献

It is a short survey of lipid pigment formation in which the role of free radicals in the peroxidation of lipids is particularly stressed. The chemical structure of lipopigments and the role of the chemical moiety in histochemical reactions is shortly overviewed. A new aspect of age in the formation of lipopigments is brought to light. Cell-adhesion mechanisms play a fundamental role during angiogenesis. This article summarizes the role of various cell-adhesive events in blood vessel formation, including general aspects of cell-matrix and cell-cell interactions. In particular, the authors discuss the role of integrinvβ3 in vascular cell survival, proliferation and invasion during the complex process of angiogenesis.  相似文献

Chemokines and their receptors play a key role in development and homeostasis as well as in the pathogenesis of tumors and autoimmune diseases. Chemokines are involved in the implantation of the early conceptus, the migration of subsets of cells during embryonic development, and the overall growth of the embryo. Chemokines also have an important role in the development and maintenance of innate and adaptive immunity. In addition, they play a significant role in wound healing and angiogenesis. When the physiological role of chemokines is subverted or chronically amplified, disease often follows. Chemokines are involved in the pathobiology of chronic inflammation, tumorigenesis and metastasis, as well as autoimmune diseases. This article reviews the role of chemokines and their receptors in normal and disease processes and the potential for using chemokine antagonists for appropriate targeted therapy.  相似文献

Metabolic diseases are based on a dysregulated crosstalk between various cells such as adipocytes, hepatocytes and immune cells. Generally, hormones and metabolites mediate this crosstalk that becomes alterated in metabolic syndrome including obesity and diabetes. Recently, Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) are emerging as a novel way of cell-to-cell communication and represent an attractive strategy to transfer fundamental informations between the cells through the transport of proteins and nucleic acids. EVs, released in the extracellular space, circulate via the various body fluids and modulate the cellular responses following their interaction with the near and far target cells. Clinical and experimental data support their role as biomarkers and bioeffectors in several diseases includimg also the metabolic syndrome. Despite numerous studies on the role of macrophages in the development of metabolic diseases, to date, there are little informations about the influence of metabolic stress on the EVs produced by macrophages and about the role of the released vesicles in the organism. Here, we review current understanding about the role of EVs in metabolic diseases, mainly in inflammation status burst. This knowledge may play a relevant role in health monitoring, medical diagnosis and personalized medicine.  相似文献

The amygdala -- an almond-shaped group of nuclei at the heart of the telencephalon -- has been associated with a range of cognitive functions, including emotion, learning, memory, attention and perception. Most current views of amygdala function emphasize its role in negative emotions, such as fear, and in linking negative emotions with other aspects of cognition, such as learning and memory. However, recent evidence supports a role for the amygdala in processing positive emotions as well as negative ones, including learning about the beneficial biological value of stimuli. Indeed, the amygdala's role in stimulus-reward learning might be just as important as its role in processing negative affect and fear conditioning.  相似文献

The current study evaluated how men with variable levels of gender role conflict responded to single-session, therapist-facilitated dream work using the C. E. Hill (1996, 2004) model of dream work. Overall, men reported positive benefits from participating in the dream session, similar to data in other studies. Men who reported higher gender role conflict on the Gender Role Conflict Scale discussed related gender role conflict themes during dream work, although gender role conflict was not related to session outcome. The review is devoted to analyzing the data on the role of microRNAs in human tumor progression. Wnt proteins are a family of secreted proteins that regulate many aspects of cellular functions. The discovery that mutations in low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5, a putative Wnt coreceptor, could positively and negatively affect bone mass in humans generated an enormous amount of interest in the possible role of the Wnt signaling pathway in skeletal biology. Over the last decade, considerable progress has been made in determining the role of the canonical Wnt signaling pathway in various aspects of skeletal development. Furthermore, recent evidence indicates the important role of non-canonical Wnt signaling in skeletal development. In this review we discuss the current understanding of the role of Wnt signaling in chondrogenesis, osteoblastogenesis, and osteoclastogenesis.  相似文献

Mutations in keratin genes cause a diverse spectrum of skin, hair and mucosal disorders. Cutaneous disorders include epidermolysis bullosa simplex, palmoplantar keratoderma, epidermolytic ichthyosis and pachyonychia congenita. Both clinical and laboratory observations confirm a major role for keratins in maintaining epidermal cell–cell adhesion. When normal tissue homeostasis is disturbed, for example, during wound healing and cancer, keratins play an important non-mechanical role. Post-translational modifications including glycosylation and phosphorylation of keratins play an important role in protection of epithelial cells from injury. Keratins also play a role in modulation of the immune response. A current focus in the area of keratins and disease is the development of new treatments including small inhibitory RNA (siRNA) to mutant keratins and small molecules to modulate keratin expression.  相似文献

Prostaglandins have long been thought to play important roles in the mechanism of parturition. Here we review the involvement of prostaglandins in myometrial and cervical functions with emphasis on human labor and birth. In addition, the cellular sources of prostaglandins as well as their interactions with various other endocrine, paracrine and physical factors, such as oxytocin, corticotropin releasing hormone, nitric oxide, platelet activating factor, cytokines, endothelin and stretch are also addressed together with their potential role in the molecular reorganization of cervical structure associated with labor and delivery. Finally, the premier role of progesterone in pregnancy maintenance and parturition is juxtaposed with the proposed "fine-tuning", modulatory role of prostaglandins and the above listed factors in the regulation of parturition.  相似文献

Copper, although known as a micronutrient, has a pivotal role in modulating the cellular metabolism. Many studies have reported the role of copper in angiogenesis. Copper chaperones are intracellular proteins that mediate copper trafficking to various cell organelles. However, the role and function of copper chaperones in relation to angiogenesis has to be further explored. The intracellular copper levels when in excess are deleterious and certain mutations of copper chaperones have been shown to induce cell death and influence various cellular metabolisms. The study of these chaperones will be helpful in understanding the players in the cascade of events in angiogenesis and their role in cellular metabolic pathways. In this review we have briefly listed the copper chaperones associated with angiogenic and metabolic signalling and their function.  相似文献

The pathogenesis of ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is complex and not well understood. Inflammation plays an important role in IRI, with involvement of leukocytes, adhesion molecules, chemokines and cytokines. Emerging data suggest a role of T cells as mediators of IRI both in renal and extra-renal organs. Divergent roles of T cell subsets have also been elucidated, suggesting a more complicated role of T cells in the different phases of IRI. This review presents recent evidence from various animal models that advances our understanding of the role T cells play in IRI. These findings entertain the possibility of using immunotherapeutic agents for the prevention and treatment of IRI.  相似文献

Listeriae are used as a tool by different specialities in biomedical research. There are now at least four major fields of interest in LISTERIA: (1). the role in medical microbiology: Listeria monocytogenes causes severe diseases of men and animals and is difficult to treat; (2). the role in food microbiology: Listeria is a food-borne pathogen and is found in various food items; (3). the role in cell biology: L. monocytogenes is a facultative intracellular parasite having an intense cross-talk and interactions with the host cell; (4). the role in immunology: basic knowledge on cell-mediated immunity has been acquired through the model of listeriosis. Plant innate immunity is often associated with specialized programmed cell death at or near the site of pathogen infection. Despite the isolation of several lesion mimic mutants, the molecular mechanisms that regulate cell death during an immune response remain obscure. Recently, autophagy, an evolutionarily conserved process of bulk protein and organelle turnover, was shown to play an important role in limiting cell death initiated during plant innate immune responses. Consistent with its role in plants, several studies in animals also demonstrate that the autophagic machinery is involved in innate as well as adaptive immunities. Here, we review the role of autophagy in plant innate immunity. Because autophagy is observed in healthy and dying plant cells, we will also examine whether autophagy plays a protective or a destructive role during an immune response.  相似文献

The ability of food to establish and maintain response habits and conditioned preferences depends largely on the function of brain dopamine systems. While dopaminergic transmission in the nucleus accumbens appears sufficient for some forms of reward, the role of dopamine in food reward does not appear to be restricted to this region. Dopamine plays an important role in both the ability to energize feeding and to reinforce food-seeking behaviour; the role in energizing feeding is secondary to the prerequisite role in reinforcement. Dopaminergic activation is triggered by the auditory and visual as well as the tactile, olfactory, and gustatory stimuli of foods. While dopamine plays a central role in the feeding and food-seeking of normal animals, some food rewarded learning can be seen in genetically engineered dopamine-deficient mice.  相似文献

Inflammation plays an important role in the initiation, development, progression and complications of atherosclerotic vascular disease. Our present knowledge of the elementary role of inflammation for the onset of plaque rupture in atherosclerotic coronary lesions primarily stems from autopsy studies. However, the introduction of directional coronary atherectomy catheters has provided a unique opportunity to directly investigate the role of inflammation in coronary syndromes. In this report we describe the role of coronary plaque inflammation, as determined by immunohistochemistry, on the presentation of coronary syndromes and on the clinical outcome following percutaneous interventions.  相似文献
