The identification of a number of active muscles during complex actions is the useful information to identify different gestures. Biosignals such as surface electromyogram (sEMG) are a result of the summation of electrical activity of a number of sources. The complexity of the anatomy and actions makes it difficult in identifying the number of active sources from the multiple channel recordings. This paper addresses two applications of independent component analysis (ICA) on sEMG: the first one is to evaluate the use of ICA for the separation of bioelectric signals when the number of active sources may not be known. The second application is to identify complex hand gestures using decomposed sEMG. The theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that the ICA is suitable for the separation of myoelectric signals. The results identify the usage of ICA for identifying complex gestures.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to examine whether or not the application of independent component analysis (ICA) is useful for separation of motor unit action potential trains (MUAPTs) from the multi-channel surface EMG (sEMG) signals. In this study, the eight-channel sEMG signals were recorded from tibialis anterior muscles during isometric dorsi-flexions at 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% maximal voluntary contraction. Recording MUAP waveforms with little time delay mounted between the channels were obtained by vertical sEMG channel arrangements to muscle fibers. The independent components estimated by FastICA were compared with the sEMG signals and the principal components calculated by principal component analysis (PCA). From our results, it was shown that FastICA could separate groups of similar MUAP waveforms of the sEMG signals separated into each independent component while PCA could not sufficiently separate the groups into the principal components. A greater reduction of interferences between different MUAP waveforms was demonstrated by the use of FastICA. Therefore, it is suggested that FastICA could provide much better discrimination of the properties of MUAPTs for sEMG signal decomposition, i.e. waveforms, discharge intervals, etc., than not only PCA but also the original sEMG signals.  相似文献

Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a classical technique in statistical data analysis, feature extraction and data reduction, aiming at explaining observed signals as a linear combination of orthogonal principal components. Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is a technique of array processing and data analysis, aiming at recovering unobserved signals or 'sources' from observed mixtures, exploiting only the assumption of mutual independence between the signals. The separation of the sources by ICA has great potential in applications such as the separation of sound signals (like voices mixed in simultaneous multiple records, for example), in telecommunication or in the treatment of medical signals. However, ICA is not yet often used by statisticians. In this paper, we shall present ICA in a statistical framework and compare this method with PCA for electroencephalograms (EEG) analysis. We shall see that ICA provides a more useful data representation than PCA, for instance, for the representation of a particular characteristic of the EEG named event-related potential (ERP).  相似文献

DNA microarray gene expression and microarray-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) have been widely used for biomedical discovery. Because of the large number of genes and the complex nature of biological networks, various analysis methods have been proposed. One such method is "gene shaving," a procedure which identifies subsets of the genes with coherent expression patterns and large variation across samples. Since combining genomic information from multiple sources can improve classification and prediction of diseases, in this paper we proposed a new method, "ICA gene shaving" (ICA, independent component analysis), for jointly analyzing gene expression and copy number data. First we used ICA to analyze joint measurements, gene expression and copy number, of a biological system and project the data onto statistically independent biological processes. Next, we used these results to identify patterns of variation in the data and then applied an iterative shaving method. We investigated the properties of our proposed method by analyzing both simulated and real data. We demonstrated that the robustness of our method to noise using simulated data. Using breast cancer data, we showed that our method is superior to the Generalized Singular Value Decomposition (GSVD) gene shaving method for identifying genes associated with breast cancer.  相似文献

The purpose of this article was to investigate whether or not FastICA can separate identical motor unit action potential trains (MUAPTs) of the 8-channel surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals constructed by an sEMG model into the independent components. Firstly, we have examined how much the increase of motor units (MUs) in the simulated sEMG signals influenced the performance on the separation of MUAPTs by kurtosis. The decreased trend of mean kurtosis on both sEMG signals and their independent components were observed as MUs were increased. These data suggested that the separation performance decayed when MUs were increased. Secondary, the differences between the independent components and the principal components have been also applied to the simulated sEMG signals with or without time delay between the sEMG channels. FastICA could successfully separate identical MUAPTs with no time delay but principal component analysis (PCA) could not do so. Against it, both FastICA and PCA could not separate MUAPTs with some time delay. In conclusion, our results suggested that FastICA could separate identical MUAPTs with no time delay into the independent components by FastICA, which might offer a new technique for the separation of interfered MUAP waveforms based on statistical properties of sEMG signal distributions.  相似文献

Using surface electromyography (sEMG) signal for efficient recognition of hand gestures has attracted increasing attention during the last decade, with most previous work being focused on recognition of upper arm and gross hand movements and some work on the classification of individual finger movements such as finger typing tasks. However, relatively few investigations can be found in the literature for automatic classification of multiple finger movements such as finger number gestures. This paper focuses on the recognition of number gestures based on a 4-channel wireless sEMG system. We investigate the effects of three popular feature types (i.e. Hudgins’ time–domain features (TD), autocorrelation and cross-correlation coefficients (ACCC) and spectral power magnitudes (SPM)) and four popular classification algorithms (i.e. k-nearest neighbor (k-NN), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) and support vector machine (SVM)) in offline recognition. Motivated by the good performance of SVM, we further propose combining the three features and employing a new classification method, multiple kernel learning SVM (MKL-SVM). Real sEMG results from six subjects show that all combinations, except k-NN or LDA using ACCC features, can achieve above 91% average recognition accuracy, and the highest accuracy is 97.93% achieved by the proposed MKL-SVM method using the three feature combination (3F). Referring to the offline recognition results, we also implement a real-time recognition system. Our results show that all six subjects can achieve a real-time recognition accuracy higher than 90%. The number gestures are therefore promising for practical applications such as human–computer interaction (HCI).  相似文献

Separation of complex valued signals is a frequently arising problem in signal processing. For example, separation of convolutively mixed source signals involves computations on complex valued signals. In this article, it is assumed that the original, complex valued source signals are mutually statistically independent, and the problem is solved by the independent component analysis (ICA) model. ICA is a statistical method for transforming an observed multidimensional random vector into components that are mutually as independent as possible. In this article, a fast fixed-point type algorithm that is capable of separating complex valued, linearly mixed source signals is presented and its computational efficiency is shown by simulations. Also, the local consistency of the estimator given by the algorithm is proved.  相似文献

The surface electromyographic (sEMG) signal that originates in the muscle is inevitably contaminated by various noise signals or artifacts that originate at the skin-electrode interface, in the electronics that amplifies the signals, and in external sources. Modern technology is substantially immune to some of these noises, but not to the baseline noise and the movement artifact noise. These noise sources have frequency spectra that contaminate the low-frequency part of the sEMG frequency spectrum. There are many factors which must be taken into consideration when determining the appropriate filter specifications to remove these artifacts; they include the muscle tested and type of contraction, the sensor configuration, and specific noise source. The band-pass determination is always a compromise between (a) reducing noise and artifact contamination, and (b) preserving the desired information from the sEMG signal. This study was designed to investigate the effects of mechanical perturbations and noise that are typically encountered during sEMG recordings in clinical and related applications. The analysis established the relationship between the attenuation rates of the movement artifact and the sEMG signal as a function of the filter band pass. When this relationship is combined with other considerations related to the informational content of the signal, the signal distortion of filters, and the kinds of artifacts evaluated in this study, a Butterworth filter with a corner frequency of 20 Hz and a slope of 12 dB/oct is recommended for general use. The results of this study are relevant to biomechanical and clinical applications where the measurements of body dynamics and kinematics may include artifact sources.  相似文献

ObjectivesElectromyography (EMG) is recording of the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles. The classification of the EMG signals for different physical actions can be useful in restoring some or all of the lost motor functionalities in these individuals. Accuracy in classifying the EMG signal indicates efficient control of prosthesis.Material and methodsThe flexible analytic wavelet transform (FAWT) is used for classification of surface electromyography (sEMG) signals for identification of physical actions. FAWT is an efficient method for decomposition of sEMG signal into eight sub-bands, features namely neg-entropy, mean absolute value (MAV), variance (VAR), modified mean absolute value type 1 (MAV1), waveform length (WL), simple square integral (SSI), Tsallis entropy, integrated EMG (IEMG) are extracted from the sub-bands. Extracted features are fed into an extreme learning machine (ELM) classifier with sigmoid activation function.ResultsComprehensive experiments are conducted on the input sEMG signals and the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity scores are used for performance measurement. Experiments showed that among all sub-bands, the seventh sub-band provided the best performance where the recorded accuracy, sensitivity and specificity values were 99.36%, 99.36% and 99.93%, respectively. The comparison results showed best efficiency of proposed method as compared to other methods on the same dataset.ConclusionThis paper investigates the usage of the FAWT and ELM on sEMG signal classification. The results show that the proposed method is quite efficient in classification of the sEMG signals. It is also observed that the seventh sub-band of the FAWT provides the best discrimination property. In the future works, recent wavelet transform methods will be used for improving the classification performance.  相似文献

A Compound fault signal usually contains multiple characteristic signals and strong confusion noise, which makes it difficult to separate week fault signals from them through conventional ways, such as FFT-based envelope detection, wavelet transform or empirical mode decomposition individually. In order to improve the compound faults diagnose of rolling bearings via signals’ separation, the present paper proposes a new method to identify compound faults from measured mixed-signals, which is based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method and independent component analysis (ICA) technique. With the approach, a vibration signal is firstly decomposed into intrinsic mode functions (IMF) by EEMD method to obtain multichannel signals. Then, according to a cross correlation criterion, the corresponding IMF is selected as the input matrix of ICA. Finally, the compound faults can be separated effectively by executing ICA method, which makes the fault features more easily extracted and more clearly identified. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method in compound fault separating, which works not only for the outer race defect, but also for the rollers defect and the unbalance fault of the experimental system.  相似文献

The study of hand and finger movement is an important topic with applications in prosthetics, rehabilitation, and ergonomics. Surface electromyography (sEMG) is the gold standard for the analysis of muscle activation. Previous studies investigated the optimal electrode number and positioning on the forearm to obtain information representative of muscle activation and robust to movements. However, the sEMG spatial distribution on the forearm during hand and finger movements and its changes due to different hand positions has never been quantified. The aim of this work is to quantify 1) the spatial localization of surface EMG activity of distinct forearm muscles during dynamic free movements of wrist and single fingers and 2) the effect of hand position on sEMG activity distribution. The subjects performed cyclic dynamic tasks involving the wrist and the fingers. The wrist tasks and the hand opening/closing task were performed with the hand in prone and neutral positions. A sensorized glove was used for kinematics recording. sEMG signals were acquired from the forearm muscles using a grid of 112 electrodes integrated into a stretchable textile sleeve. The areas of sEMG activity have been identified by a segmentation technique after a data dimensionality reduction step based on Non Negative Matrix Factorization applied to the EMG envelopes. The results show that 1) it is possible to identify distinct areas of sEMG activity on the forearm for different fingers; 2) hand position influences sEMG activity level and spatial distribution. This work gives new quantitative information about sEMG activity distribution on the forearm in healthy subjects and provides a basis for future works on the identification of optimal electrode configuration for sEMG based control of prostheses, exoskeletons, or orthoses. An example of use of this information for the optimization of the detection system for the estimation of joint kinematics from sEMG is reported.  相似文献

The identification of the motor unit (MU) innervation zone (IZ) using surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals detected on the skin with a linear array or a matrix of electrodes has been recently proposed in the literature. However, an analysis of the reliability of this procedure and, therefore, of the suitability of the sEMG signals for this purpose has not been reported. The purpose of this work is to describe the intra and inter-rater reliability and the suitability of surface EMG in locating the innervation zone of the upper trapezius muscle. Two operators were trained on electrode matrix positioning and sEMG signal analysis. Ten healthy subjects, instructed to perform a series of isometric contractions of the upper trapezius muscle participated in the study. The two operators collected sEMG signals and then independently estimated the IZ location through visual analysis. Results showed an almost perfect agreement for intra-rater and inter-rater reliability. The constancy of IZ location could be affected by the factors reflecting the population of active MUs and their IZs, including: the contraction intensity, the acquisition period analyzed, the contraction repetition. In almost all cases the IZ location shift due to these factors did not exceed 4 mm. Results generalization to other muscles should be made with caution.  相似文献

Background

Surface electromyography (sEMG) signals have been used in numerous studies for the classification of hand gestures and movements and successfully implemented in the position control of different prosthetic hands for amputees. sEMG could also potentially be used for controlling wearable devices which could assist persons with reduced muscle mass, such as those suffering from sarcopenia. While using sEMG for position control, estimation of the intended torque of the user could also provide sufficient information for an effective force control of the hand prosthesis or assistive device. This paper presents the use of pattern recognition to estimate the torque applied by a human wrist and its real-time implementation to control a novel two degree of freedom wrist exoskeleton prototype (WEP), which was specifically developed for this work.  相似文献

Recent research has demonstrated that surface electromyography (sEMG) signals have non-Gaussianity and non-linearity properties. It is known that more muscle motor units are recruited and firing rates (FRs) increase as exertion increases. A hypothesis was proposed that the Gaussianity test (S g) and linearity test (S ?) levels of sEMG signals are associated with the number of active motor units (nMUs) and the FR. The hypothesis has only been preliminarily discussed in experimental studies. We used a simulation sEMG model involving spatial (active MUs) and temporal (three FRs) information to test the hypothesis. Higher-order statistics (HOS) from the bi-frequency domain were used to perform S g and S ?. Multivariate covariance analysis and a correlation test were employed to determine the nMUs-S g relationship and the nMUs-S ? relationship. Results showed that nMUs, the FR, and the interaction of nMUs and the FR all influenced the S g and S ? values. The nMUs negatively correlated to both the S g and S ? values. That is, at the three FRs, sEMG signals tended to a more Gaussian and linear distribution as exertion and nMUs increased. The study limited experiment factors to the sEMG non-Gaussianity and non-linearity levels. The study quantitatively described nMUs and the FR of muscle that are not directly available from experiments. Our finding has guiding significance for muscle capability assessment and prosthetic control.  相似文献

The current study represents the first systematic investigation of the social communication of captive siamangs (Symphalangus syndactylus). The focus was on intentional signals, including tactile and visual gestures, as well as facial expressions and actions. Fourteen individuals from different groups were observed and the signals used by individuals were recorded. Thirty-one different signals, consisting of 12 tactile gestures, 8 visual gestures, 7 actions, and 4 facial expressions, were observed, with tactile gestures and facial expressions appearing most frequently. The range of the signal repertoire increased steadily until the age of six, but declined afterwards in adults. The proportions of the different signal categories used within communicative interactions, in particular actions and facial expressions, also varied depending on age. Group differences could be traced back mainly to social factors or housing conditions. Differences in the repertoire of males and females were most obvious in the sexual context. Overall, most signals were used flexibly, with the majority performed in three or more social contexts and almost one-third of signals used in combination with other signals. Siamangs also adjusted their signals appropriately for the recipient, for example, using visual signals most often when the recipient was already attending (audience effects). These observations are discussed in the context of siamang ecology, social structure, and cognition. To see video sequences of signals described here, please go to  相似文献

This paper introduces an Independent Component Analysis (ICA) approach to the separation of nonlinear mixtures in the complex domain. Source separation is performed by a complex INFOMAX approach. The neural network which realizes the separation employs the so called "Mirror Model" and is based on adaptive activation functions, whose shape is properly modified during learning. Nonlinear functions involved in the processing of complex signals are realized by pairs of spline neurons called "splitting functions", working on the real and the imaginary part of the signal respectively. Theoretical proof of existence and uniqueness of the solution under proper assumptions is also provided. In particular a simple adaptation algorithm is derived and some experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution are shown.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the effects of the longitudinal single differential (LSD), the longitudinal double differential (LDD) and the normal double differential (NDD) spatial filters, the electrode shape, the inter-electrode distance (IED) on non-Gaussianity and non-linearity levels of simulated surface EMG (sEMG) signals when the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) varied from 10% to 100% by a step of 10%. The effects of recruitment range thresholds (RR), the firing rate (FR) strategy and the peak firing rate (PFR) of motor units were also considered.A cylindrical multilayer model of the volume conductor and a model of motor unit (MU) recruitment and firing rate were used to simulate sEMG signals in a pool of 120 MUs for 5 s. Firstly, the stationarity of sEMG signals was tested by the runs, the reverse arrangements (RA) and the modified reverse arrangements (MRA) tests. Then the non-Gaussianity was characterised with bicoherence and kurtosis, and non-linearity levels was evaluated with linearity test. The kurtosis analysis showed that the sEMG signals detected by the LSD filter were the most Gaussian and those detected by the NDD filter were the least Gaussian. In addition, the sEMG signals detected by the LSD filter were the most linear. For a given filter, the sEMG signals detected by using rectangular electrodes were more Gaussian and more linear than that detected with circular electrodes. Moreover, the sEMG signals are less non-Gaussian and more linear with reverse onion-skin firing rate strategy than those with onion-skin strategy. The levels of sEMG signal Gaussianity and linearity increased with the increase of the IED, RR and PFR.  相似文献
