The increasing demand for products derived from seaweeds has led to an increasing amount of research being directed towards studies related to their growth and productivity. Several investigators have attempted to develop different formulae for the estimation of growth rates and caused confusion to the readers. In this study, accuracy and reliability of the average growth rate formulae were analyzed using geometric progression theory and compared to each other. The lowest degree of error (0.023 %) and the highest matched point (61.90 %) was achieved by applying [(W t ?/?W 0)1/t ???1]?×?100 % in growth rate determination. This formula has been tested and proven to be the most accurate among all the currently available ones.  相似文献

The classic formulae in malaria epidemiology are reviewed that relate entomological parameters to malaria transmission, including mosquito survivorship and age-at-infection, the stability index (S), the human blood index (HBI), proportion of infected mosquitoes, the sporozoite rate, the entomological inoculation rate (EIR), vectorial capacity (C) and the basic reproductive number (R 0). The synthesis emphasizes the relationships among classic formulae and reformulates a simple dynamic model for the proportion of infected humans. The classic formulae are related to formulae from cyclical feeding models, and some inconsistencies are noted. The classic formulae are used to to illustrate how malaria control reduces malaria transmission and show that increased mosquito mortality has an effect even larger than was proposed by Macdonald in the 1950's.  相似文献

Salmonella, a common zoonotic pathogen, causes gastroenteritis in both humans and animals. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used to improve gastrointestinal dysfunction and to modify the immune response to inflammation for centuries. This study used six herbal plants and four TCM formulae to rate their efficacy in preventing S. Typhimurium infection via mouse model. Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of Coptidis rhizome (CR) against the reference strain tallied 12.5 mg/ml and against clinical isolate ST21 was 25 mg/ml. MBCs of other herbal extracts and formulae on Salmonella Typhimurium strains were above 50 mg/ml. In the mice model, CR and Si Jun Zi Tang (SJZT) could significantly decrease the bacterial load in organs and blood after being challenged, along with body weight loss due to the infection. CR and SJZT alleviated infection-induced interferon-gamma levels in the serum and tissues, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels in intestinal tissues. CR and SJZT serum metabolites could suppress S. Typhimurium invasion and TNF-α expression in RAW264.7 cells. The therapeutic activity of CR and SJZT may involve berberine, ginsenoside Rb1, and glycyrrhizin, interfering with Salmonella when invading macrophages. CR and SJZT has shown potential in preventing S. Typhimurium infection through the regulation of the immune response.  相似文献

In 21 samples, staggered over 18 months, 1725 composite muscle formulae have been established for Phoronis psammophila Cori. The study of variations of the number and distribution of longitudinal muscle bundles demonstrates the increase of the muscle number (3 or 4) with the age of the animals. This increase is displayed with difficulty because of the interactions of many phenomena, especially reproduction and so statistical tests have not indicated significance. The general and especially mean formulae of different samples do not indicate the increase of the number of muscle bundles with time, as proposed by Emig.  相似文献

Aims

Calculation of net ion uptake rate (F) from hydroponic solutions relies on balanced equations where F is equal to the initial minus the final ion content, plus fertilization. Knowledge is thus required of both volume (V), concentration (C) and of their temporal variations. The literature, however, proposes simplified equations that disregard variations in V and are thus strictly inaccurate. This paper studies the bias arising from such simplified formulae and also from deviations in V and C measurements.

Methods

We used our experimental data and simulation to analyse the impact of different bias sources on F calculation, and to compare setups where C is regulated, or left to drift in order to study F = f(C).

Results

This paper reports two major findings, the first being that simplified equations distort F diurnal dynamics and ion uptake isotherms, yielding underestimated Michaelis-Menten parameters. The second shows the advantage of using C-regulated over unregulated systems to determine F when biased V and C measurements cannot be avoided.

Conclusions

Regulated systems are able to minimize the biases on F, but the measurement of water uptake rate is compulsory. Therefore, simplified formulae should not be used.  相似文献

Small abalone (Haliotis diversicolor supertexta) is a high value-added shellfish. It however has been suffering Vibrio alginolyticus infections, which cause mass death of small abalone and thus great economic losses, particularly in artificial aquaculture. In this study, we attempted to treat small abalone with anti-Vibrio IgY to elicit a passive immunity directly against V. alginolyticus infections. Anti-Vibrio IgY was alginate encapsulated in egg powders as feed, which may avoid antibody inactivation in the gastrointestinal tract of small abalone. The feed was tested for the stability of anti-Vibrio IgY in a gastrointestinal mimic environment. The result showed anti-Vibrio IgY retained activity as high as 90% after 4 h exposure to pancreatic enzymes. Addition of 0, 5 or 10% anti-Vibrio IgY-encapsulated egg powders into a basal diet to form abalone diet formulae. Small abalones fed with the anti-Vibrio IgY formulae showed a relatively high respiratory burst activity than those without anti-Vibrio IgY treatments. The survival rates of small abalones fed with 5 or 10% anti-Vibrio IgY egg powders were in the range of 65–70% 14 days post-V. alginolyticus challenge (1 × 106 c.f.u.), which was significantly higher than 0% of those fed without anti-Vibrio IgY. The anti-Vibrio IgY-encapsulated formulae were thus concluded to be an effective means to prevent small abalone from V. alginolyticus infection, and may be practical in use in abalone aquaculture.  相似文献

Two approximations are commonly used to describe the spread of an infectious disease at its early phase: (i) the branching processes based on the generation concept and (ii) the exponential growth over calendar time. The former is characterized by a mean parameter: the reproduction number R0. The latter is characterized by a growth rate ρ, also known as the Malthusian number. It is common to use empirically observed ρ to assess R0 using formulae derived either when both the latent and infectious periods follow exponential distributions or assuming both are fixed non-random quantities. This paper first points out that most of these formulae are special cases when the latent and infectious periods are gamma distributed, given by a closed-form solution in Anderson and Watson [1980. It shows that whereas the distribution of the generation time can be derived by the latent and infectious period distributions, the distribution of the transmission interval is also determined by the intensity of infectious contacts as a counting process and hence by R0. Dental characters are importantly used for reconstructing the evolutionary history of mammals, because teeth represent the most abundant material available for the fossil species. However, the characteristics of dental renewal are presently poorly used, probably because dental formulae are frequently not properly established, whereas they could be of high interest for evolutionary and developmental issues. One of the oldest rodent families, the Ctenodactylidae, is intriguing in having longstanding disputed dental formulae. Here, we investigated 70 skulls among all extant ctenodactylid genera (Ctenodactylus, Felovia, Massoutiera and Pectinator) by using X-ray conventional and synchrotron microtomography in order to solve and discuss these dental issues. Our study clearly indicates that Massoutiera, Felovia and Ctenodactylus differ from Pectinator not only by a more derived dentition, but also by a more derived eruptive sequence. In addition to molars, their dentition only includes the fourth deciduous premolars, and no longer bears permanent premolars, conversely to Pectinator. Moreover, we found that these premolars are lost during adulthood, because of mesial drift of molars. Mesial drift is a striking mechanism involving migration of teeth allowed by both bone remodeling and dental resorption. This dental innovation is to date poorly known in rodents, since it is only the second report described. Interestingly, we noted that dental drift in rodents is always associated with high-crowned teeth favoring molar size enlargement. It can thus represent another adaptation to withstand high wear, inasmuch as these rodents inhabit desert environments where dust is abundant. A more accurate study of mesial drift in rodents would be very promising from evolutionary, biological and orthodontic points of view.  相似文献

When phagocytes have been incubated with a mixture of two types of particles (say A and B), a microscopic count can be made of cells having ingested iA-particles and jB-particles, for various i and j. The new genus Mexicaphorura, and its type species Mexicaphorura guerrerensis sp. n. are described from marine littoral sand. This study investigated the potential antimicrobial activity of ten Bacillus licheniformis strains isolated from retail infant milk formulae against a range of indicator (Lactococcus lactis, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Listeria innocua) and clinically relevant (Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Salmonella Typhimurium and Escherichia coli) microorganisms. Deferred antagonism assays confirmed that all B. licheniformis isolates show antimicrobial activity against the Gram-positive target organisms. PCR and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry analyses indicated that four of the B. licheniformis isolates produce the bacteriocin lichenicidin. The remaining six isolates demonstrated a higher antimicrobial potency than lichenicidin-producing strains. Further analyses identified a peptide of ~1,422 Da as the most likely bioactive responsible for the antibacterial activity of these six isolates. N-terminal sequencing of the ~1,422 Da peptide from one strain identified it as ILPEITXIFHD. This peptide shows a high homology to the non-ribosomal peptides bacitracin and subpeptin, known to be produced by Bacillus spp. Subsequent PCR analyses demonstrated that the six B. licheniformis isolates may harbor the genetic machinery needed for the synthesis of a non-ribosomal peptide synthetase similar to those involved in production of subpeptin and bacitracin, which suggests that the ~1,422 Da peptide might be a variant of subpeptin and bacitracin.  相似文献

At 15° above the fovea, an increase in field diameter from 1° to 5° reduces the threshold sevenfold, at 25° above the fovea tenfold. 2. These changes are shown to follow qualitatively from simple statistical properties of the retinal mosaic. Analytic treatment leads to the expression, (A – nt)k I = C, in which A = area, nt = constant threshold number of elements, I = threshold intensity, and k and C are constants. Prediction of the yield and quality of different types of cheeses that could be produced from a given type and/or amount of goat milk is of great economic benefit to goat milk producers and goat cheese manufacturers. Bulk tank goat milk was used for manufacturing hard, semi-hard and soft cheeses (N = 25, 25 and 24, respectively) to develop predictive formulae of cheese yield based on milk composition. Fat, total solids, total protein and casein contents in milk and moisture-adjusted cheese yield were determined to establish relationships between milk composition and cheese yield. Soft, semi-hard and hard cheeses in this study had moisture contents of 66, 46 and 38%, respectively, which could be used as reference standards. In soft cheese, individual components of goat milk or a combination of two or three components predicted cheese yield with a reasonably high correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.73–0.81). However, correlation coefficients of predictions were lower for both semi-hard and hard cheeses. Overall, total solids of goat milk was the strongest indicator of yield in all three types of cheeses, followed by fat and total protein, while casein was not a good predictor for both semi-hard and hard cheeses. When compared with moisture-adjusted cheese yield, there was no difference (P > 0.05) in predicting yield of semi-hard and hard goat milk cheeses between the developed yield formulae in this study and a standard formula (the Van Slyke formula) commonly used for cow cheese. Future research will include further validation of the yield predictive formulae for hard and semi-hard cheeses of goat milk using larger data sets over several lactations, because of variation in relationships between milk components due to breed, stage of lactation, season, feeding regime, somatic cell count and differences in casein variants.  相似文献

The taxonomy of the family Parodontidae is confused, with many open questions regarding the most appropriate generic groupings. Studies on the organization, structure, composition, and in situ location of chromosomal features have led to consistent advances in the understanding of genome evolution. Among the species of Parodontidae, the consistent chromosomal divergences can be helpful in taxonomic classification, such as heteromorphic chromosome sex, karyotypic formulae, and number/location of the repetitive DNAs. Molecular analysis of repetitive sequences of satellite DNA and their physical mapping in the chromosomes of different species in a single group may be used to infer evolutionary divergence and cladistic grouping. In the present study, rDNA and the satellite DNA pPh2004 were mapped by fluorescent in situ hybridization on the chromosomes of some species of Parodontidae. These results were analyzed and reviewed together with other chromosomal markers and previously published data, to formulate inferences about the diversification of the genomes and propose a clustering of some Parodontidae species. This analysis indicated that the species Apareiodon affinis, Parodon moreirai, Parodon hilarii, Parodon nasus, and Parodon pongoensis have an apomorphic state for satellite DNA pPh2004 in Parodontidae in relation to previously studied species of Apareiodon.  相似文献

This paper makes explicit some of the assumptions underlying the view that infanticide is one of two (or more) alternative reproductive strategies utilized by adult male langur monkeys (genus Presbytis). A mathematical model has been developed from these assumptions, and formulae derived which give the equilibrium proportion of infanticidal males expected in langur populations under any given set of reproductive and demographic conditions. Together with estimates of adult male reproductive success obtained from a previous analysis of langur infanticide, these formulae were then used to calculate the precise proportion of infanticidal males expected in natural populations of langurs characterized by specific average male tenures. Further, the number of generations required for such populations to reach their predicted equilibrium was estimated using a simple computer model of langur population dynamics. The present work has thus produced several quantitative predictions which are directly falsifiable with observational data obtainable from wild populations of langur monkeys. With only slight modification, the present model may also be applied to the numerous other primate and non-primate species whose mating systems include many of the same general features as that of langurs.  相似文献

An analytical expression is derived for the rotating frame relaxation rate, R , of a spin exchanging between two sites with different transverse relaxation times. A number of limiting cases are examined, with the equation reducing to formulae derived previously under the assumption of equivalent relaxation rates at each site. The measurement of a pair off-resonance R values, with the carrier displaced equally on either side of the observed correlation, forms the basis of one of the approaches for obtaining signs of chemical shift differences, Δω, of exchanging nuclei. The results presented here establish that this method is relatively insensitive to differential transverse relaxation rates between the exchaning states, greatly simplifying the calculation of optimal parameters in R based experiments that are used for measurement of signs of Δω.  相似文献

In order to increase the potentials recorded extracellularly from nerve fibres, peripheral nerves are often placed in restricted space with cylindrical geometry. Equations are derived for computing the potentials expected at the surface of the cylinder, based on the potentials at the external surface of a small nerve fibre located on the long axis of the cylinder. These equations are evaluated numerically, using two formulae for a nerve impulse given in the literature. In both cases there is little attenuation for cylinders with radii less than 0.5 mm, but the potential declines approximately as a power of radius b for 1<b<10 mm. Various factors which might affect these results under different experimental conditions are discussed.  相似文献
