Five young adults received audio biofeedback training to reduce trapezius EMG levels while they engaged in reading in an office, seated at a table. A multiple-baseline-across subjects design was employed in two separate studies. After training, all subjects demonstrated reduced EMG levels while reading in a home or library setting. The first study suggested that subjects reduced EMG levels by minimizing movements and altering their postures; the second study systematically demonstrated changes in such behavior, which was correlated with EMG levels. The data provide evidence that EMG biofeedback resulted in response generalization across several motoric classes, and in stimulus generalization from the training setting to the natural environment. The importance of assessing generalization is discussed.  相似文献

The use of noncontingent feedback controls in studies of the efficacy and process of electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback may yield results confounded by differential expectancies for relaxation. Furthermore, the role of expectancies in producing psychological and physical relaxation as well as reducing muscle activity is unclear. This study investigated the effects of feedback delays and induced relaxation expectancies on EMG activity and experienced relaxation. One hundred four non-clinical subjects participated in one auditory frontal EMG biofeedback training session. Subjects were assigned to one of four computerized feedback delay conditions (0.0037, 0.7493, 2.2481, 6.7444 s) and to one of two relaxation expectancy conditions (positive or negative). During 20 minutes of biofeedback training, all groups decreased frontal activity. Feedback delays interacted with training epochs in affecting EMG; the longest delay group reduced frontal activity more slowly than the shortest delay group during training. Positive relaxation expectancies produced greater experienced relaxation than did negative relaxation expectancies. Instrumental and expectancy factors in EMG biofeedback appear to operate independently of each other by reducing physiological activity and producing psychological relaxation respectively.  相似文献

A 44-year-old female cancer patient was given progressive muscle relaxation training and multiple muscle-site EMG biofeedback to reduce the conditioned negative responses she had apparently developed to her chemotherapy treatments. Following three baseline chemotherapy sessions, the patient was given relaxation training and biofeedback during four consecutive chemotherapy treatments and was asked to practice her relaxation skills daily in the hospital or at home. After the patient felt able to relax on her own, relaxation training and biofeedback were terminated and three follow-up sessions were held. Results indicated that during the chemotherapy sessions in which the patient received relaxation training and biofeedback, she showed reductions in physiological arousal (EMG, pulse rate, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure) and reported feeling less anxious and nauseated. Moreover, these changes were maintained during the follow-up sessions. These results suggest that relaxation training plus multiple muscle-site biofeedback may be an effective adjunctive procedure for reducing some of the adverse side effects of cancer chemotherapy.  相似文献

The present study evaluated the effect of frontal EMG biofeedback and relaxation training on a group of 20 anxious patients experiencing stressful life events. The patients were divided into two groups, high and low in stress, based on their life change score on the Recent Life Changes Questionnaire. Patients were evaluated at pre, post, and 6-week follow-up. Treatment consisted of 10 sessions of biofeedback-assisted relaxation. Results indicated that the high stress group showed pre to post changes on anxiety, depression, symptoms, and EMG, while low stress showed no change. Post to follow-up comparisons showed maintenance of improvement for the high stress group and no change for low stress. From pre to follow-up assessment, the high stress group showed significant changes. Both groups reported internal attributions following biofeedback and relaxation training. The high stress group attributed their improvement to the belief they were in control of their minds and bodies, while the low stress group most frequently reported the effort put into the task. The results indicate support for a cognitive explanation for some of biofeedback's effects.  相似文献

This study examined whether group progressive relaxation training was as effective as individual EMG biofeedback training in facilitating the academic achievement and self-control of 45 hyperactive elementary school children. Academic achievement was assessed with the Gates-MacGinities Reading Tests, and self-control was measured with the Nowicki-Strickland and the Teacher Rating scales. Eight sessions were scheduled at weekly intervals. Progressive relaxation was conducted in groups of seven or eight and was induced with a commercial audiocassette program. EMG training augmented frontalis biofeedback with those taped exercises. A placebo group listened to taped children's stories. Multivariate analysis of variance indicated no significant differences among the three contrast groups when all dependent variables were considered together. However, univariate F values and discriminant analysis disclosed locus of control to be significantly more internal for the progressive relaxation condition. Also, differences between the two relaxation and the placebo groups, though not statistically significant, were all in the expected direction. While the relative efficacy of group progressive relaxation could not be established conclusively, the data appeared sufficiently positive to warrant further investigation of this cost-effective prospective intervention.The opinions expressed by the authors are not necessarily those of their respective institutions.  相似文献

This study examines the relationship between Spiegel's Hypnotic Induction profile (HIP) and ability to perform EMG relaxation under conditions of self-induced and audio-assisted biofeedback training. One hundred women volunteered for screening with Spiegel's test for hypnotizability. Thirty students were then selected from the top, middle, and bottom of the HIP scoring distribution for EMG biofeedback training in relaxation. Three treatment trials included baseline, EMG biofeedback with self-induced relaxation, and EMG biofeedback with audio relaxation instructions. Contrary to predictions, high HIPs were not significantly different from low HIPs on any of the treatment measures, although all students showed a training effect. The middle HIPs demonstrated significantly higher levels of EMG activity than the extreme groups.  相似文献

It was hypothesized that EMG biofeedback relaxation training, applied to a diabetic patient, would result in a decreased level of insulin with fewer episodes of ketoacidosis. A 20-year-old female, diabetic since age nine, kept daily records of insulin doses and rated herself on an emotionality and a diabetic scale. A full-semester baseline was taken. This was followed by a semester-long training program during which the patient practiced relaxing her frontalis muscle with a portable EMG feedback unit which produced a geiger-counter-like click feedback. A cassette-tape series was used along with the portable EMG. The patient was encouraged to practice twice each day and to attempt to maintain a relaxed state even when not in the practice situation. The daily use of the portable unit was terminated at the end of the semester. In addition, the patient ceased practicing twice daily with the cassette tape. Daily insulin averaged 85 units for the six-week baseline and 59 for the final six weeks of the training period. Moreover, at the end of the training period the average dose had reached 43 units. During the training period the patient rated herself as decreasing in emotionality and in diabetic fluctuations.Supported by the National Institute of Mental Health Grant MH-15596.  相似文献

During frontal EMG biofeedback training, the relationship between frontal EMG and digital skin temperature was investigated in two experiments, which varied the number of baseline and feedback sessions. The results of Experiment 1 suggested a "general relaxation effect," where digital temperature increased as frontal EMG decreased, especially for subjects with initially low hand temperature. Experiment 2 extended the number of baseline and feedback sessions and qualified the results of Experiment 1. EMG and digital temperature did not simultaneously converge toward general relaxation over the extended baseline or feedback sessions in Experiment 2. Furthermore, when the feedback signal was introduced, digital temperature dropped quickly but recovered to baseline levels within three feedback sessions; this drop in digital temperature was interpreted within the context of attentional demands of the biofeedback task. The results appeared consistent with the view that frontal biofeedback training teaches a discriminative skill of lower frontal EMG, and that this skill does not readily generalize to digital skin temperature.  相似文献

But while research on its application suggests that this technique induces significantly lower EMG levels in experimental samples as a whole, it also discloses that some children evidence but limited reductions. Most likely, this variability is introduced by differences in subject attributes. This study assessed that prospect by examining whether four common subject characteristics correlated with the extent of decrease in EMG level achieved by 59 hyperactive school-aged boys. Those variables were pretreatment EMG level, age degree of hyperactivity, and locus of control. Number of applications or training sessions was included as the fifth predictor. A multiple regression analysis determined that only locus of control was predictive of success in EMG training; however, it accounted for 72% of the variance Implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

In a previous controlled group outcome study, a comparison of temperature biofeedback with progressive relaxation indicated that relaxation training was more effective in reducing migraine headache activity at the end of treatment. However, follow-up data obtained at 1, 2, and 3 months after the completion of treatment showed no difference between the two groups on any dependent measure. In the current study, 18 of 26 subjects who completed treatment in the original investigation collected headache data and completed a headache questionnaire I year subsequent to the conclusion of treatment in order to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of the two treatments. The results indicated that gains achieved in the reduction of headaches during both treatments were maintained at a 1-year follow-up. With the exception of medication consumption (for which relaxation training led to better long-term results) the 1-year follow-up data reveal no differential efficacy for temperature biofeedback or progressive relaxation in treating migraine headaches.  相似文献

Thirty-five subjects participated in (1) a pretreatment session during which arousal was measured while subjects anticipated and then viewed a stressful film; (2) four 20-min treatment sessions during which subjects received either contingent EMG biofeedback (biofeedback treatment), instructions to attend to a variable pitch tone (attention-placebo control), instructions to relax as much as possible (instructions-only control), or instructions to sit quietly (no-treatment control); and (3) a posttreatment session that was identical to the pretreatment session. Results indicate that when compared to the subjects in the control conditions, subjects who received EMG biofeedback were not effective in reducing frontalis EMG levels during treatment or while viewing the stressful film, but they were effective in reducing frontalis EMG levels while anticipating the stressful film. In an effort to study the role of cognitive skills training in the treatment of psychosomatic disorders, two single-case design experiments were conducted to assess the relative effectiveness of biofeedback procedures and cognitive coping techniques in the alleviation of tension headaches. For both subjects, biofeedback training influenced mean frontalis EMG levels, although such changes were not associated with concomitant reductions in headache activity. It was the presence or absence of cognitive skills training, however, that determined whether each subject reported changes in headache levels. These results suggest that a more efficient treatment approach for tension headaches would involve an increased emphasis on the modification of maladaptive cognitive activity. The present findings support the general view that a comprehensive approach in the treatment of stress-related disorders requires a concomitant focus on the cognitive, behavioral, and affective dimensions of the symptom. It was also suggested that biofeedback technology may be a useful tool for studying the physiological consequences of particular cognitive processes and in identifying particular cognitions with anxiety-provoking properties.  相似文献
