Antarctic surface oceans are well-studied during summer when irradiance levels are high, sea ice is melting and primary productivity is at a maximum. Coincident with this timing, the bacterioplankton respond with significant increases in secondary productivity. Little is known about bacterioplankton in winter when darkness and sea-ice cover inhibit photoautotrophic primary production. We report here an environmental genomic and small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) analysis of winter and summer Antarctic Peninsula coastal seawater bacterioplankton. Intense inter-seasonal differences were reflected through shifts in community composition and functional capacities encoded in winter and summer environmental genomes with significantly higher phylogenetic and functional diversity in winter. In general, inferred metabolisms of summer bacterioplankton were characterized by chemoheterotrophy, photoheterotrophy and aerobic anoxygenic photosynthesis while the winter community included the capacity for bacterial and archaeal chemolithoautotrophy. Chemolithoautotrophic pathways were dominant in winter and were similar to those recently reported in global ‘dark ocean'' mesopelagic waters. If chemolithoautotrophy is widespread in the Southern Ocean in winter, this process may be a previously unaccounted carbon sink and may help account for the unexplained anomalies in surface inorganic nitrogen content. 相似文献

Marine bacterioplankton studies over the annual cycle in polar systems are limited due to logistic constraints in site access and support. Here, we conducted a comparative study of marine bacterioplankton sampled at several time points over the annual cycle (12 occasions each) at sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Islands (KI) and Antarctic Peninsula (AP) coastal sites in order to establish a better understanding of the extent and nature of variation in diversity and community structure at these different latitudes (49-64S). Molecular methods targeting the 16S rRNA gene (DGGE, CE-SSCP and tag pyrosequencing) suggest a strong seasonal pattern with higher richness in winter and a clear influence of phytoplankton bloom events on bacterioplankton community structure and diversity in both locations. The distribution of sequence tags within Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria and Bacteriodetes differed between the two regions. At both sites, several abundant Rhodobacteraceae, uncultivated Gammaproteobacteria and Bacteriodetes-associated tags displayed intense seasonal variation often with similar trends at both sites. This enhanced understanding of variability in dominant groups of bacterioplankton over the annual cycle contributes to an expanding baseline to understand climate change impacts in the coastal zone of polar oceans and provides a foundation for comparison with open ocean polar systems. 相似文献

The sensitivity of coastal marine bacterioplankton to natural photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 400-700?nm) and ultraviolet radiation (UVR, 280-400?nm) was evaluated in five experiments over a seasonal cycle in the Blanes Bay, NW Mediterranean Sea. Exposure to natural solar radiation generally inhibited bulk bacterial activities or damaged membrane integrity when irradiances were high (i.e. spring and summer experiments) and, in general, UVB (280-320?nm) accounted for most of the inhibition. When assessing activity ((3) H-leucine uptake) at the single-cell level by microautoradiography and rRNA gene probing, seasonally varying responses and sensitivities were found among bacterial groups. While autumn and winter irradiances seemed too low to cause changes in activity, variable effects were found in spring and summer. SAR11 was consistently inhibited by UVR and PAR exposure, whereas Gammaproteobacteria and Bacteroidetes showed higher resistance. Roseobacter, Synechococcus and the NOR5 clade were occasionally photostimulated in their activity, mainly because of PAR. Our results indicate that a component of seasonality exists in the bacterial responses to solar radiation, which vary not only depending on the irradiance and the spectral characteristics, but also on the previous light history and the taxonomic composition of the community. 相似文献

It has been hypothesized that the potential for anaerobic metabolism might be a common feature of bacteria in coastal marine waters (L. Riemann and F. Azam, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 68: 5554-5562, 2002). Therefore, we investigated whether different phylogenetic groups of heterotrophic picoplankton from the coastal North Sea were able to take up a simple carbon source under anoxic conditions. Oxic and anoxic incubations (4 h) or enrichments (24 h) of seawater with radiolabeled glucose were performed in July and August 2003. Bacteria with incorporated substrate were identified by using a novel protocol in which we combined fluorescence in situ hybridization and microautoradiography of cells on membrane filters. Incorporation of glucose under oxic and anoxic conditions was found in alpha-Proteobacteria, gamma-Proteobacteria, and the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium cluster of the Bacteroidetes at both times, but not in marine Euryarchaeota. In July, the majority of cells belonging to the alpha-proteobacterial Roseobacter clade showed tracer incorporation both in oxic incubations and in oxic and anoxic enrichments. In August, only a minority of the Roseobacter cells, but most bacteria affiliated with Vibrio spp., were able to incorporate the tracer under either condition. A preference for glucose uptake under anoxic conditions was observed for bacteria related to Alteromonas and the Pseudoalteromonas-Colwellia group. These genera are commonly considered to be strictly aerobic, but facultatively fermentative strains have been described. Our findings suggest that the ability to incorporate substrates anaerobically is widespread in pelagic marine bacteria belonging to different phylogenetic groups. Diel vertical migration and feeding cycles of adult female Metridia gerlachei in the upper 290 m of a 335-m water column were measured during a total of 65 h in two periods of early summer (Dec 20–21 and Dec 25–26, 1991). Samples collected in eight depth strata by 35 MOCNESS tows (333-m mesh) were analyzed for abundance and mean individual gut pigment content. Most of the copepod population was concentrated in a 50-m depth interval at all times. Feeding began simultaneously with nocturnal ascent from a depth of 200–250 m at 18:00 h (local time), when the relative change in ambient light intensity was greatest. Ingestion rate increased exponentially (ki = 0.988 h–1) at double the gut evacuation rate (ke = 0.488 h–1) as the population moved upward at 22.3–26.5 m h–1 through increasing concentrations of particulate chlorophyll-a. Although the bulk of the population did not move to depths shallower than 50 m, and began its downward migration at a rate of 20.8–31.7 mh–1 in complete darkness, individual females continued to make brief excursions into chlorophyll-rich surface waters (4–8 g l–1) during the first few hours of population descent. Ingestion rate diminished abruptly by one order of magnitude (ki = 0.068 h–1) at dawn ( 0330 h). Within four more hours, the population had reached its daytime depth and gut pigment content remained constant at a minimum value until the next migration cycle. No feeding appeared to take place at depth during the day. Ingestion by M. gerlachei females removed < 4% of daily primary production, with only 20% of this amount being removed from surface waters by active vertical transport. 相似文献

(35)S-Methionine and (3)H-leucine bioassay tracer experiments were conducted on two meridional transatlantic cruises to assess whether dominant planktonic microorganisms use visible sunlight to enhance uptake of these organic molecules at ambient concentrations. The two numerically dominant groups of oceanic bacterioplankton were Prochlorococcus cyanobacteria and bacteria with low nucleic acid (LNA) content, comprising 60% SAR11-related cells. The results of flow cytometric sorting of labelled bacterioplankton cells showed that when incubated in the light, Prochlorococcus and LNA bacteria increased their uptake of amino acids on average by 50% and 23%, respectively, compared with those incubated in the dark. Amino acid uptake of Synechococcus cyanobacteria was also enhanced by visible light, but bacteria with high nucleic acid content showed no light stimulation. Additionally, differential uptake of the two amino acids by the Prochlorococcus and LNA cells was observed. The populations of these two types of cells on average completely accounted for the determined 22% light enhancement of amino acid uptake by the total bacterioplankton community, suggesting a plausible way of harnessing light energy for selectively transporting scarce nutrients that could explain the numerical dominance of these groups in situ. 相似文献

We combined denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), catalysed reporter deposition-FISH (CARD-FISH) and clone libraries to investigate the seasonality of the bacterial assemblage composition in north-west Mediterranean coastal waters. DGGE analysis indicated that bacterial diversity changed gradually throughout the year, although with a clear distinction of the summer period. Alphaproteobacteria were the dominant group on an annual basis [29% of the DAPI (4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) counts by CARD-FISH, and 70% of the bacterial clones]. The SAR11 clade was most abundant during spring and summer (>20% of DAPI counts), while the Roseobacter clade was abundant primarily in winter and spring (up to 7% of DAPI counts). The phylum Bacteroidetes constituted the second most important group and was quantitatively uniform throughout the year (average 11% of the DAPI counts). Gammaproteobacteria showed a peak during summer (8% of DAPI counts), when most of them belonged to the NOR5 cluster. Clone libraries and CARD-FISH showed reasonable agreement in the quantitative proportions of Bacteroidetes and Gammaproteobacteria, but Alphaproteobacteria were overrepresented in clone libraries. Sequencing of the most predominant DGGE bands failed to detect the SAR11 group despite their high abundance. The combination of the three molecular approaches allowed a comprehensive assessment of seasonal changes in bacterial diversity. 相似文献

Copepods are essential components of marine food webs worldwide. In the North Atlantic, they are thought to perform vertical migration and to remain at depths more than 500 m during winter. We challenge this concept through a study of the winter feeding ecology of little auks (Alle alle), a highly abundant planktivorous seabird from the North Atlantic. By combining stable isotope and behavioural analyses, we strongly suggest that swarms of copepods are still available to their predators in water surface layers (less than 50 m) during winter, even during short daylight periods. Using a new bioenergetic model, we estimate that the huge number (20–40 million birds) of little auks wintering off southwest Greenland consume 3600–7200 tonnes of copepods daily, strongly suggesting substantial zooplankton stocks in surface waters of the North Atlantic in the middle of the boreal winter. 相似文献

Geographical and seasonal distributions of marine cladocerans in the coastal waters of southern China were studied. Penilia avirostris was the most common species, followed by Evadne tergestina and Podon schmackeri. P. avirostris and E. tergestina were most common during summer. P. schmackeri, found only in a small bay northeast of Hong Kong, showed no clear seasonal pattern of occurrence. P. avirostris and E. tergestina were found at temperatures ranging from 16–32°C and salinity ranging from 7.3–37.2. P. schmackeri was restricted to a temperature range of 17–29°C and a salinity range of 31.0–37.2. No significant relationships between marine cladoceran abundance and chlorophyll a concentration were found in samples taken from Tolo Harbour. Parthenogenetic brood size of P. avirostris and E. tergestina ranged from 1 to 14, while P. schmackeri was found to carry up to 19 embryos per brood. No geographical trend in fecundity patterns was observed. No correlation was found between body length and brood size. The occurrence of females with resting eggs was rare. 相似文献

Distribution of biogenic silica and particulate organic matter in coastal and oceanic surface waters off the South Shetland Islands in summer 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Biogenic silica (BSi), lithogenic silica (LSi), particiulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON), and chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration levels were measured in the surface waters (<100 m) off the northern coast of the South Shetland Islands in summer 1991. High concentration levels of BSi and LSi were recorded in the oceanic area and the coastal area, respectively. However, marked regional differences were not observed for POC, PON and Chl a concentrations. The mean BSi/POC atomic ratio (±SD) in the oceanic area (0.27±0.17) was 6 times that in the coastal area (0.045±0.020), except for the bloom situation (0.19±0.029). In contrast, the mean POC/PON atomic ratio was not significantly different in the coastal area (5.9±1.4) and the oceanic area (5.2±1.7). Nitzschia spp. were the dominant diatoms in the oceanic area but not in the coastal area. High BSi/POC ratios have been reported for blooms dominated by Nitzschia spp. even in the coastal regions of the Antarctic Ocean. The area difference in the BSi/POC ratios was probably related to the difference in species composition of phytoplankton and not to regional contrast. Oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion and phosphate excretionrates were measured on the aggregate form (aggregated sexualblastozooid generation) and solitary form (solitary asexualoozooid generation) of Salpa thompsoni sampled from waters offthe Antarctic Peninsula from December 1999 to February 2000,in conjunction with body composition analysis (water, ash, carbon,nitrogen and phosphorus). The specific metabolic rates of S.thompsoni were weight-independent. No significant differencesbetween the aggregate and solitary forms were observed for theweight-specific rates with the exception of the oxygen consumptionrate on phosphorus weight. Metabolic loss estimated for theaggregate and solitary forms was 3.0 and 3.5% day1 forbody carbon, 1.6 and 1.8% for body nitrogen, 3.9 and 10.6% forbody phosphorus, respectively. Contents of carbon (6.0% of dryweight for the aggregate form and 5.1% for the solitary form),nitrogen (1.5 and 1.3%) and phosphorus (0.15 and 0.11%) tendedto decrease with the increase of dry weight. All mean valuesof each body constituent (water, ash, C, N and P) for the aggregateand solitary forms were not significantly different in the samedry weight ranges. 相似文献

An investigation of the lignicolous marine fungi in Hong Kong coastal waters was carried out for 18 months in order to determine successional patterns of fungal occurrence. Submerged blocks of pine (Pinus massoniana Lambert) and teak (Tectona grandis Linnaeus) were used as baits and were scraped at intervals to remove surface fouling organisms. Occurrence of fungi is described in terms of the composition of the fungal flora and the number of fungal colonies developed on the test blocks before and after incubation. The scraped teak and pine blocks supported slightly different fungal floras, and the selective effect of these substrates on fungal colonization is discussed. 相似文献

Diatoms are abundant and diverse in many Antarctic freshwaters, with a general trend of decreasing diversity moving southwards. They form an important component of many benthic algal communities in streams and standing waters but are generally less common in the phytoplankton. Diatoms are excellent ecological indicator species and, because their remains are preserved in many sedimentary environments, there appears to be a great potential for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction and the examination of past diversity. A lack of taxonomic precision and consistency, coupled with the insufficient collection from some geographical areas, makes the estimation of the number of Antarctic diatom species problematic. 相似文献

根据2007年9月和10月福建南日岛生态调查资料,从海水水质、海水营养结构与营养水平、生物多样性等3个方面诊断与评价了南日群岛海域环境现状,利用综合质量指数法对海洋生态环境质量进行综合评价,并探讨了不同评价指数的关系及合理性.结果表明:海域的pH、溶解氧(DO)、化学需氧量(COD)、Pb、Cd、Hg、As含量均符合第二类海水水质标准.71%站位的磷酸盐、14%站位的无机氮和7%站位的石油类污染物超第二类海水水质标准.海水水质总体属于较好等级,营养结构表现为氮限制,大部分海域处于富营养化状态,依据浮游生物的多样性指数评价结果为轻污染-清洁水平.生态环境综合质量指数评价结果表明南日群岛海域生态环境总体处于良好水平.利用不同的评价指数对海域环境健康状况进行诊断的结果存在一定差异.在实际评价中应综合运用化学指标和生物指标,才能得到相对客观的结论. 相似文献

Diesel fuel pollution in coastal waters, resulting from recreational boating and commercial shipping operations, is common and can adversely affect marine biota. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of additions of particulate organic carbon (POC) in the form of naturally-occurring marsh grass (Spartina alterniflora), inorganic nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), inert particles, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on diesel fuel biodegradation and to attempt to formulate an effective bioremedial treatment for small diesel fuel spills in marine waters. Various combinations of treatments were added to water samples from a coastal marina to stimulate diesel fuel biodegradation. Diesel fuel was added in concentrations approximating those found in a spill and biodegradation of straight chain aliphatic constituents was estimated by measuring mineralization of 14C hexadecane added to diesel fuel. All treatments that included POC showed stimulation of biodegradation. However, the addition of inert particles (glass fiber filters and nylon screening) caused no stimulation of biodegradation. The addition of nitrogen and phosphorus alone did not result in stimulation of biodegradation, but nitrogen and Spartina (although not phosphorus and Spartina) did result in stimulation above that of Spartina alone. Maximum biodegradation rates were obtained by the addition of the Spartina POC, ammonium, and phosphate. The addition of mannitol, a labile DOC source with POC and phosphate resulted in a decrease in diesel fuel biodegradation as compared to POC and phosphate alone. The seasonal pattern of diesel fuel biodegradation showed a maximum in the summer and a minimum in the winter. Therefore, of the treatments tested, the most effective for bioremediation of diesel fuel in marine waters is the addition of POC, nitrogen, and phosphorus. 相似文献

Anthropogenic activities on coastal watersheds increase nutrient concentrations of groundwater. As groundwater travels downslope
it transports these nutrients toward the adjoining coastal water. The resulting nutrient loading rates can be significant
because nutrient concentrations in coastal groundwaters may be several orders of magnitude greater than those of receiving
coastal waters. Groundwater-borne nutrients are most subject to active biogeochemical transformations as they course through
the upper 1 m or so of bottom sediments. There conditions favor anaerobic processes such as denitrification, as well as other
mechanisms that either sequester or release nutrients. The relative importance of advective vs. regenerative pathways of nutrient
supply may result in widely different rates of release of nutrients from sediments. The relative activity of denitrifiers
also may alter the ratio of N to P released to overlying waters, and hence affect which nutrient limits growth of producers.
The consequences of nutrient (particularly nitrate) loading include somewhat elevated nutrient concentrations in the watercolumn,
increased growth of macroalgae and phytoplankton, reduction of seagrass beds, and reductions of the associated fauna. The
decline in animals occurs because of habitat changes and because of the increased frequency of anoxic events prompted by the

The effects of diesel fuel and three lubricating oils on microbial communities in marine sediment were investigated in a field experiment at Casey Station, Antarctica. Sediment from a pristine site in Antarctica was treated with either Special Antarctic Blend (SAB) diesel, a synthetic lubricant (Mobil 0W-40), the same lubricant after use in a vehicle or an equivalent unused biodegradable lubricant (Titan GT1). The sediment was re-deployed in trays on the seabed for 5 weeks during the austral summer. The microbial community structure in the sediment upon collection, deployment and retrieval was investigated using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), most probable number (MPN) counts and direct microscopic counting. It was found that only minor changes occurred in the microbial communities due to the experimental protocol. After 5 weeks however, there were significant differences between the communities in the SAB and clean and used lubricant (Mobil 0W-40) as compared to the control treatment. There was no significant difference between the control and biodegradable oil (Titan GT1) treatment. These results indicate that SAB and synthetic lubricants have a measurable effect on sediment microbial communities in the short-term. The biodegradable oil did not produce such an effect and we conclude that the use of such an oil could reduce the risks associated with oil spills in the Antarctic environment. 相似文献

The Antarctic euphausiids Euphausia superba and E. crystallorophias were sampled using an 8 m2 rectangular midwater trawl inside the caldera of Deception Island. Specimens of the same species were collected on the same day from the strandline and sublittoral fringe within the caldera at a bay where these euphausiids had been incapacitated by high temperature geothermally heated waters. Differences between length frequency distributions of samples obtained by both methods were investigated once net-caught specimens had been subject to the simulated effects of geothermally heated waters. Differences between maturity stage/sex ratios for E. superba samples were also assessed. No significant differences between sizes of net-caught or beach-sampled E. crystallorophias were detected, but significant differences were found between both the sizes and sex/maturity stages for E. superba samples. An extracellular protease from the marine bacterium Sphingomonas paucimobilis, strain 116, isolated from the stomach of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba Dana, was purified and characterized. The excretion of protease was maximal at temperatures from 5 to 10°C, i.e. below the temperature optimum for the strain growth (15°C). The highly purified enzyme was a metalloprotease [sensivity to ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)] and showed maximal activity against proteins at 20–30°C and pH 6.5–7.0, and towards N-benzoyl-tyrosine ethyl ester (BzTyrOEt) at pH 8.0. At 0°C the enzyme retained as much as 47% of maximal activity in hydrolysis of urea denatured haemoglobin (Hb) (at pH 7.0), and at −5 and −10°C, 37 and 30%, respectively. The metalloprotease was stable up to 30°C for 15 min and up to 20°C for 60 min. These results indicate that the proteinase from S. paucimobilis 116 is a cold-adapted enzyme. 相似文献
