Abstract.— We explore the hypothesis that females choose to mate with heavier males for the genes for behavioral aggressiveness they offer their offspring in the desert spider, Agelenopsis aperta . Behavioral aggressiveness is important to competition for limited resources in the field and is thus correlated with the mass spiders achieve. We established four crosses based on the body mass relationships of parents subjected to selection in their natural environment (female mass/male mass: HI/HI, HI/LO, LO/HI, and LO/LO) and reared the F1 offspring in a noncompetitive laboratory environment. Offspring size and mass at maturity were measured, life history parameters recorded, and behavioral aggressiveness scored in a series of tests. Significant familial effects were detected in all of these measures, but pertinent cross effects were observed only in the assays measuring behavioral aggressiveness. The results were summarized in terms of the fitness costs to HI females of mating with LO males (fewer female offspring of the more aggressive phenotypes) and the benefits to LO females of mating with HI males (fewer fearful offspring of both sexes).  相似文献

We assessed the effect of no exercise (Nex; control) and high exercise level (Hex; approximately 4 MJ/day) and two dietary manipulations [a high-fat diet (HF; 50% of energy, 700 kJ/100 g) and low-fat diet (LF; 20% of energy, 300 kJ/100 g)] on compensatory changes in energy intake (EI) and energy expenditure (EE) over 7-day periods. Eight lean men were each studied four times in a 2 x 2 randomized design. EI was directly quantified by weight of food consumed. EE was assessed by heart rate (HR) monitoring. Body weight was measured daily. Mean daily EE was 17.6 and 11.5 MJ/day (P < 0.001) on the pooled Hex and Nex treatments, respectively. EI was higher on HF diets (13.4 MJ/day pooled) compared with the LF diets (9.0 MJ/day). Regression analysis showed that these energy imbalances induced significant compensatory changes in EB over time of approximately 0.3-0.4 MJ/day (P < 0.05). These were due to changes in both EI and EE in the opposite direction to the perturbation in energy balance. These changes were significant, small but persistent, amounting to approximately 0.2 and approximately 0.35 MJ/day for EI and EE, respectively.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to find out the differences in physical activity (PA), energy expenditure (EE) and energy intake (EI) under free-living conditions between Japanese prepubertal obese and nonobese boys. The subjects were 15 prepubertal obese boys (Age: 11.7+/-0.4 years old, Body fat: 35.2+/-1.6%) who do not have obese parents and siblings and 15 prepubertal nonobese boys (Age: 11.8+/-0.4 years old, Body fat: 18.5+/-0.8%). We assessed their daily PA by heart rate (HR) monitoring, pedometer step counts (PSC) and time for sedentary activities (SA). We also examined calculated EE from HR-VO(2) regression, EI and percentage of macronutrient EI. Results are as follows: Percentage of body fat had significant correlation with weight, BMI, time for SA, percentage EI of protein (positive, p<0.001), VO(2max), VO(2max) per body weight, VO(2max) per LBM, PSC, TEE per body weight, TEI per body weight (negative, p<0.001), percentage of EI of carbohydrate (negative, p<0.01). The values of the obese were significantly lower in total EE per body weight and in total EI per body weight. EI from dinner was significantly higher in the obese group. The values of the obese were significantly higher in percentage EI from protein and that from carbohydrate. The results of this study showed prepubertal obese boys who do not have obese parents and siblings have low PA and spend much time for sedentary activities. Obese boys consume higher percentage energy of protein and lower percentage of carbohydrate though differences in EE and EI were found only in total EE per body weight and total EI per body weight between obese boys and nonobese boys.  相似文献

Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of depression as well as neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. Recent studies show a role of BDNF in energy metabolism and body weight regulation. We examined BDNF levels in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from age matched elderly depressed and control subjects. Also, the association of BDNF levels with age, gender, body weight, body mass index (BMI), and cognitive performance was evaluated. We did not find any significant differences in plasma and CSF BDNF levels between depressed and control subjects. Plasma BDNF levels were negatively correlated with age (but not with BMI and body weight), when analyses were performed including both depressed and control subjects. A significant reduction in plasma BDNF levels was observed in females as compared to male subjects, and the change in BDNF levels were significantly and positively related to body weight in females. Furthermore, significant increases in Total Recall and Delayed Recall values were found in females as compared to males. In conclusion, the lower BDNF levels observed in females suggest that changes in peripheral BDNF levels are likely secondary to an altered energy balance. However, further studies using larger sample size are warranted.  相似文献

In this study, we have postulated that in healthy males, peak aerobic power ([Formula: see text]) would associate with muscle capillary density rather than oxidative potential, regardless of fibre type or subtype. To test this, active but untrained volunteers (n = 11) were separated into high (HI) and low (LO) groups based on [Formula: see text] obtained during a progressive cycle task to fatigue. The 26% higher (P?< 0.05) [Formula: see text] observed in HI (40.8?± 1.5?mL·kg(-1)·min(-1), mean?± SE) compared with LO ( 51.4?± 0.90?mL·kg(-1)·min(-1), mean?± SE) was not accompanied by differences in age (21.3?± 1.2 compared with 21.1?± 0.63?years, respectively) or body mass (72.4?± 4.6 compared with 71.6?± 1.9?kg, respectively). Tissue samples obtained from the vastus lateralis indicated greater (P?< 0.05) capillary counts per fibre (CC;?+24%) in HI compared with LO, regardless of fibre type (I, IIA, IIX, IIAX). Capillary density (CD) as measured in a field of defined area was also elevated (+22%; P?< 0.05), as was the number of capillaries per fibre (+22%; P?< 0.05). No differences were observed between the 2 groups in the distribution, area, and the CC/fibre area ratio in the different fibre types and subtypes. Similarly, there was no difference between the HI and LO groups in oxidative potential, as measured by succinic dehydrogenase activity in the different fibre types. It is concluded that the higher capillary density may contribute to improved vascular conductance and the elevated [Formula: see text] observed in the untrained participants.  相似文献

Seasonal adjustments in body mass (BM), nonshivering thermogenesis (NST) and several physiological, hormonal, and biochemical markers were measured in wild-trapped Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) from Inner Mongolia, China. Sexual differences were detected in BM, NST, brown adipose tissue (BAT) mass, and mitochondrial protein content. BM and NST in males were higher in winter (January) and spring (May) than in summer (August), and BM of females was also the highest in winter, but NST remained relatively constant throughout the year. Cytochrome c oxidase activity and mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) content in BAT were enhanced in winter in males or females, respectively. Serum leptin concentration was the lowest in winter and positively correlated with BM and body fat mass but was negatively correlated with BAT UCP1 content. These data suggest that wild Mongolian gerbils do not depend on a decrease in BM, but instead increase their thermogenic capacity to cope with cold stress. Leptin may be involved in the seasonal regulation in energy balance and thermogenesis in field Mongolian gerbils.  相似文献

The independent influence of peak oxygen uptake (Vo(? peak)) on changes in thermoregulatory responses during exercise in a neutral climate has not been previously isolated because of complex interactions between Vo(? peak), metabolic heat production (H(prod)), body mass, and body surface area (BSA). It was hypothesized that Vo(? peak) does not independently alter changes in core temperature and sweating during exercise. Fourteen males, 7 high (HI) Vo(? peak): 60.1 ± 4.5 ml·kg?1·min?1; 7 low (LO) Vo(? peak): 40.3 ± 2.9 ml·kg?1·min?1 matched for body mass (HI: 78.2 ± 6.1 kg; LO: 78.7 ± 7.1 kg) and BSA (HI: 1.97 ± 0.08 m2; LO: 1.94 ± 0.08 m2), cycled for 60-min at 1) a fixed heat production (FHP trial) and 2) a relative exercise intensity of 60% Vo(? peak) (REL trial) at 24.8 ± 0.6°C, 26 ± 10% RH. In the FHP trial, H(prod) was similar between the HI (542 ± 38 W, 7.0 ± 0.6 W/kg or 275 ± 25 W/m2) and LO (535 ± 39 W, 6.9 ± 0.9 W/kg or 277 ± 29 W/m2) groups, while changes in rectal (T(re): HI: 0.87 ± 0.15°C, LO: 0.87 ± 0.18°C, P = 1.00) and aural canal (T(au): HI: 0.70 ± 0.12°C, LO: 0.74 ± 0.21°C, P = 0.65) temperature, whole-body sweat loss (WBSL) (HI: 434 ± 80 ml, LO: 440 ± 41 ml; P = 0.86), and steady-state local sweating (LSR(back)) (P = 0.40) were all similar despite relative exercise intensity being different (HI: 39.7 ± 4.2%, LO: 57.6 ± 8.0% Vo(2 peak); P = 0.001). At 60% Vo(2 peak), H(prod) was greater in the HI (834 ± 77 W, 10.7 ± 1.3 W/kg or 423 ± 44 W/m2) compared with LO (600 ± 90 W, 7.7 ± 1.4 W/kg or 310 ± 50 W/m2) group (all P < 0.001), as were changes in T(re) (HI: 1.43 ± 0.28°C, LO: 0.89 ± 0.19°C; P = 0.001) and T(au) (HI: 1.11 ± 0.21°C, LO: 0.66 ± 0.14°C; P < 0.001), and WBSL between 0 and 15, 15 and 30, 30 and 45, and 45 and 60 min (all P < 0.01), and LSR(back) (P = 0.02). The absolute esophageal temperature (T(es)) onset for sudomotor activity was ~0.3°C lower (P < 0.05) in the HI group, but the change in T(es) from preexercise values before sweating onset was similar between groups. Sudomotor thermosensitivity during exercise were similar in both FHP (P = 0.22) and REL (P = 0.77) trials. In conclusion, changes in core temperature and sweating during exercise in a neutral climate are determined by H(prod), mass, and BSA, not Vo(? peak).  相似文献

The effects of linseed oil (LO) and macadamia oil (MO) on the metabolic changes induced by a high‐fat diet (HFD) rich in saturated fatty acid were investigated. For the purpose of this study, the vegetable oil present in the HFD, i.e. soybean oil (SO) was replaced with LO (HFD‐LO) or MO (HFD‐MO). For comparative purposes, a group was included, which received a normal fat diet (NFD). Male Swiss mice (6‐week old) were used. After 14 days under the dietary conditions, the mice were fasted for 18 h, and experiments were then performed. The HFD‐SO, HFD‐LO and HFD‐MO groups showed higher glycaemia (p < 0.05 versus NFD). However, no significant effect was observed on glycaemia, liver gluconeogenesis and liver ketogenesis when SO was replaced by either LO or MO. The body weight and the sum of epididymal, mesenteric, retroperitoneal and inguinal fat weights were higher (p < 0.05) in the HFD‐SO and HFD‐MO groups as compared with the NFD group. However, there was no significant difference in these parameters between the NFD and HFD‐LO groups. Thus, the protective role of LO on lipid accumulation induced by an HFD rich in saturated fatty acid is potentially mediated by the high content of ?‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acid in LO. Objective

To validate energy intake (EI) estimated from a pre-coded food diary (PFD) against energy expenditure (EE) measured with a valid physical activity monitor (SenseWear Pro3 Armband) and to evaluate whether misreporting was associated with overweight/obesity in a group of elderly men.

Methods

Forty-seven healthy Norwegian men, 60–80 years old, completed the study. As this study was part of a larger intervention study, cross-sectional data were collected at both baseline and post-test. Participants recorded their food intake for four consecutive days using food diaries and wore SenseWear Pro3 Armband (SWA) during the same period. Only participants with complete data sets at both baseline and post-test were included in the study.

Results

The group average EI was 17% lower at baseline and 18% lower at post-test compared to measured EE. Mean difference from Bland-Altman plot for EI and EE was −1.5 MJ/day (±1.96 SD: −7.0, 4.0 MJ/day) at baseline and −1.6 MJ/day (−6.6, 3.4 MJ/day) at post-test. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was 0.30 (95% CI: 0.02, 0.54, p = 0.018) at baseline and 0.34 (0.06, 0.57, p = 0.009) at post-test. Higher values of underreporting was shown among overweight/obese compared to normal weight participants at both baseline and post-test (p≤ 0.001), respectively.

Conclusions

The results indicate that the PFD could be a useful tool for estimating energy intake in normal weight elderly men. On the other hand, the PFD seems to be less suitable for estimating energy intake in overweight/obese elderly men.  相似文献

We sought to identify associations of basal metabolic rate (BMR) with morphological traits in laboratory mice. In order to expand the body mass (BM) range at the intra-strain level, and to minimize relevant genetic variation, we used male and female wild type mice (C3HeB/FeJ) and previously unpublished ENU-induced dwarf mutant littermates (David mice), covering a body mass range from 13.5 g through 32.3 g. BMR was measured at 30°C, mice were killed by means of CO2 overdose, and body composition (fat mass and lean mass) was subsequently analyzed by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), after which mice were dissected into 12 (males) and 10 (females) components, respectively. Across the 44 individuals, 43% of the variation in the basal rates of metabolism was associated with BM. The latter explained 47% to 98% of the variability in morphology of the different tissues. Our results demonstrate that sex is a major determinant of body composition and BMR in mice: when adjusted for BM, females contained many larger organs, more fat mass, and less lean mass compared to males. This could be associated with a higher mass adjusted BMR in females. Once the dominant effects of sex and BM on BMR and tissue mass were removed, and after accounting for multiple comparisons, no further significant association between individual variation in BMR and tissue mass emerged. Objective: To develop a model based on empirical data and human energetics to predict the total energy cost of weight gain and obligatory increase in energy intake and/or decrease in physical activity level associated with weight gain in children and adolescents. Research Methods and Procedures: One‐year changes in weight and body composition and basal metabolic rate (BMR) were measured in 488 Hispanic children and adolescents. Fat‐free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) were measured by DXA and BMR by calorimetry. Model specifications include the following: body mass (BM) = FFM + FM, each with a specific energy content, cff (1.07 kcal/g FFM) and cf (9.25 kcal/g FM), basal energy expenditure (EE), kff and kf, and energetic conversion efficiency, eff (0.42) for FFM and ef (0.85) for FM. Total energy cost of weight gain is equal to the sum of energy storage, EE associated with increased BM, conversion energy (CE), and diet‐induced EE (DIEE). Results: Sex‐ and Tanner stage–specific values are indicated for the basal EE of FFM (kff) and the fat fraction in added tissue (fr). Total energy cost of weight gain is partitioned into energy storage (24% to 36%), increase in EE (40% to 57%), CE (8% to 13%), and DIEE (10%). Observed median (10th to 90th percentile) weight gain of 6.1 kg/yr (2.4 to 11.4 kg/yr) corresponds at physical activity level (PAL) = 1.5, 1.75, and 2.0 to a total energy cost of weight gain of 244 (93 to 448 kcal/d), 267 (101 to 485 kcal/d), and 290 kcal/d (110 to 527 kcal/d), respectively, and to a total energy intake of 2695 (1890 to 3730), 3127 (2191 to 4335), and 3551 (2487 to 4930) kcal/d, respectively. If weight gain is caused by a change in PAL alone and PAL0 = 1.5 at baseline t = 0, the model indicates a drop in PAL of 0.22 (0.08 to 0.34) units, which is equivalent to 60 (18 to 105) min/d of walking at 2.5 mph. Discussion: Halting the development or progression of childhood obesity, as observed in these Hispanic children and adolescents, by counteracting its total energy costs will require a sizable decrease in energy intake and/or reciprocal increase in physical activity.  相似文献

Spleen cells from mice selectively bred to produce high affinity antibody responses to protein antigens (HI) had reduced responses to both T and B cell mitogens when compared to those from mice selectively bred to produce low affinity (LO) responses. The reduced response by spleen cells from HI mice was partially reversed by the addition of indomethacin in vitro. Spleen adherent cells from HI mice had increased production of prostaglandin E2 when compared to those from LO mice. In addition, spleen adherent cells from mice which fail to show affinity maturation not only produced lower amounts of PGE2 than those from HI mice but also a decreased proportion of spleen cells adhered to plastic in these mice. To test the possibility that the increased PGE2 production in HI mice was responsible for the production of high affinity antibodies, indomethacin was administered in vivo and resulted in a significant reduction in antibody affinity. The possibility that PGE2 production may control the balance between the TH1 and TH2 cells of Mosmann and Coffman is discussed.  相似文献

Female rats and mice have smaller and, per body mass (BM), more alveoli and alveolar surface area (Sa) than males of their respective species. This sexual dimorphism becomes apparent about the time of sexual maturity. It is prevented in rats (not tested in mice) by ovariectomy at age 3 wk. In female mice, estrogen receptor (ER)-alpha and ER-beta are required for formation of alveoli of appropriate size and number. We now report the average volume of an alveolus (va) and the number of alveoli per body mass (Na/BM) were not statistically different between ER-alpha(-/-) and wild type (wt) males. However, the combination of a larger value for va and a smaller value for Na/BM, though neither parameter achieved a statistically significant intergroup difference, resulted in a statistically significant lower Sa/BM in ER-alpha(-/-) males compared with wt males. In ER-beta(-/-) males, va was bigger and Na/BM and Sa/BM were lower compared with wt males. Wt males had larger alveoli and lower Na/BM and Sa/BM than wt females. The wt sexual dimorphism of va, Na/BM, and Sa/BM was absent in ER-alpha(-/-) mice. Alveolar size did not differ between ER-beta(-/-) females and males but Na/BM and Sa/BM were greater in ER-beta(-/-) females than in ER-beta(-/-) males. The results in male mice, with prior findings in female mice, 1) demonstrate estrogen receptors have a smaller effect on alveolar dimensions in male than female mice, 2) show ER-alpha and ER-beta are required for the sexual dimorphism of alveolar size, and 3) show ER-alpha is needed for the sexual dimorphism of body mass-specific alveolar number and surface area.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine whether and how cycle time duration affects energy expenditure and substrate utilization during whole-body vibration (WBV). Nine men performed 3 squatting exercises in execution frequency cycles of 6, 4, and 2 seconds to 90 degrees knee flexion with vibration (Vb+) (frequency was set at 30 Hz and the amplitude of vibration was 4 mm) and without vibration (Vb-) during 3 minutes, each with an additional load of 30% of the subject's body weight. A 2-way analysis of variance for VO2 revealed a significant vibration condition main effect (p < 0.001) and a cycle time duration effect (p < 0.001). When differences were analyzed by Fisher's LSD test, cycle time duration of 2 seconds was significantly different from 4 and 6 seconds, both in Vb+ and Vb-. Total energy expenditure (EE(tot)), carbohydrate oxidation rate (EE(cho)), and fat oxidation rate (EE(fat)) demonstrated a significant vibration condition main effect (EE(tot): p < 0.01; EE(cho): p < 0.001; EE(fat): p < 0.001) and cycle time duration main effect (EE(tot) and EE(cho): p < 0.001; EE(fat): p < 0.01). EE(tot), EE(cho), and EE(fat) post hoc comparisons indicated that values for the 2-second test significantly differed from 4 and 6 seconds when compared in the same vibration condition. VO2 and EE values were greater in Vb+ than in Vb- conditions with the same cycle time duration. Our study confirms that squatting at a greater frequency helps to maximize energy expenditure during exercise with or without vibration. Therefore, cycle time duration must be controlled when vibration exercise is prescribed.  相似文献

It is well known that leptin has the capacity to reduce food intake, cause body weight loss, and increase energy expenditure in several vertebrate species. In this study, we investigated the effects of chronically elevated leptin levels on behavior and physiology of Asian Blue Quail (Coturnix chinensis). Fifteen male quail were treated with chicken leptin dissolved in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) via subcutaneously inserted osmotic pumps that released approximately 1 microg/g body weight/day during a 14-day period. Another 15 males acted as controls and their pumps released PBS only. All males were housed together with two females. We observed a decrease in body weight and feeding behavior in leptin-treated birds, but not in control birds, after 2 days of treatment. Thereafter, all birds increased in weight. Males treated with leptin were more active and more likely to preen the day after the beginning of the treatment. Plasma cholesterol levels in leptin birds decreased during the first week of treatment and plasma triglycerides tended to remain lower compared to the controls during the whole 2-week period of treatment. Glucose levels appeared stable during the observation period. Leptin-treated males remained closer to accompanying females than did control males, and females together with leptin males took longer to lay their first egg compared to females together with control males. This is the first article showing the effect of leptin on cholesterol and triglyceride levels in birds. We also observed a change in the activity and male-female interaction pattern in tested quail.  相似文献

Understanding the costs and regulation of reproduction in primates requires understanding the separate but linked effects of energy availability and total energy expenditure (TEE). We compared variation in TEE and energy intake (EI) between two periods, early lactation and after the resumption of sexual cycling, for eight females from two groups of normally reproducing colony-living baboons (Papio h. anubis). Total energy expenditure was assessed using the doubly labeled water method. TEE was correlated with maternal mass both during early lactation and after the resumption of cycling. TEE after the resumption of cycling was positively related to infant growth rates; mothers with rapidly growing infants had higher energy expenditure. TEE was however unrelated to maternal rank and only weakly associated with reproductive parameters such as delay to conception. EI in early lactation was related to infant mass and interbirth intervals, but unrelated to infant growth or reproductive parameters once cycling had resumed. Energy availability (EA; the difference between intake and expenditure) differed significantly between subordinate and dominant females during early lactation, was highly variable among individuals as a function of body composition, and is suggested to follow a nonlinear relationship as a complex function of social status, lactation stage, infant growth, and female fertility. Thus, as a consequence of reduced energy availability, subordinate females in this captive context may experience reproductive delays even though the total energy expenditure after the return of cycling was similar between high and low ranking females.  相似文献

High and low levels of Wolbachia-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) were selected for in the parasitic wasp Nasonia vitripennis, in the single-infected strain Ti277. After nine generations of selection, males from lines selected for high incompatibility level (HI lines) were significantly more incompatible with uninfected females (AsymC) than the maternal strain. The reverse response, a full compatibility with AsymC, was observed in eight out of 12 lines selected for low incompatibility (LO lines), correlated with loss of Wolbachia infection. Bacterial density estimates in the eggs of some HI lines increased significantly. The procedure for line maintenance resulted in introgression of AsymC nuclear genome into the Ti277 background. Significant changes of CI level and bacterial density due to the introgression were also observed in the control lines, possibly reflecting an effect of host genotype on bacterial density and CI. After selection had been relaxed for six generations, bacterial density in the five high-infected HI lines declined back to a level comparable to the other lines. The data are consistent with the ‘bacterial dosage’ model, but with an upper threshold of bacterial infection above which there is no correlation between infection level and CI level. We further investigate the maternal transmission of bacterial density by a mother–daughter regression on bacterial density. The pattern observed is consistent with a density dependent regulation of bacterial numbers around an ‘equilibrium’ density, independent of any effects of CI. The equilibrium value is likely to be determined by both bacterial strain and host genotype.  相似文献

We examined cytochrome P450 production and activity and circulating hormone concentrations in male medaka exposed to 17beta-estradiol (E2) or 17alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2). Intraperitoneal injection of E2 at 1, 10, or 100 microg/g-fish completely suppressed CYP3A38 protein production and suppressed CYP3A40 protein levels by 89%, 52%, or 47%, respectively. CYP3A38 and CYP3A40 mRNA expression was unaltered, and CYP3A enzymatic activity initially increased and then decreased with increasing E2 dose. Males co-cultured with females were exposed to a markedly high concentration (43 ng/L) of E2 secreted by females. CYP3A protein levels in co-cultured males were suppressed. Serum testosterone (TE) and 11keto-testosterone levels in co-cultured males were downregulated to 40% of pre-exposure levels. Serum E2 levels increased in co-cultured males or males exposed to EE2. Testicular CYP19, which converts TE to E2, increased by 9.5 times in males exposed to 50 ng/L EE2 and by 21.5 times in those exposed to 100 ng/L EE2. Male medaka exposed to EE2 showed increased serum Vtg levels. Estrogenic exposure induced Vtg production, suppressed CYP3A protein production, downregulated TE metabolism, and enhanced CYP19 activity. Serum E2 endogenously induced by CYP19 could contribute to Vtg induction in male medaka.  相似文献

The semi-allogeneic fetus, whose genome consists of maternally and paternally inherited alleles, must coexist with an active maternal immune system during its 9 months in utero. Macrophages are the second most abundant immune cell at the maternal-fetal interface, although populations and functions for these populations remain ill defined. We have previously reported two distinct subsets of CD14(+) decidual macrophages found to be present in first trimester decidual tissue, 20 percent CD11c(HI) and 68 percent CD11c(LO). Interestingly, CD11c(HI) decidual macrophages express genes associated with lipid metabolism, inflammation, and antigen presentation function and specifically upregulate CD1 molecules. Conversely, CD11c(LO) decidual macrophages express genes associated with extracellular matrix formation, muscle regulation, and tissue growth. The large abundance of CD11c(HI) decidual macrophages and their ability to process antigens more efficiently than CD11c(LO) macrophages suggests that CD11c(HI) macrophages may be important antigen processing and presenting cells at the maternal-fetal interface, while CD11c(LO) macrophages may perform necessary homeostatic functions during placental construction. Thus, macrophage heterogeneity may be an important and necessary division of labor that leads to both an induction of maternal immune cell tolerance to fetal antigens as well as basic homeostatic functions in human pregnancy.  相似文献

Examination of ventilation function in an average population showed that maximum minute ventilation in adults fell with advancing age. Males had higher values than females, the highest values being attained, in both sexes, at 18 (117 and 83 1/min respectively). Tidal volume during loading, expressed as a percentage of vital capacity, rose with advancing age in all groups of males and females (from 53% at 18 to 64% at 55 in males and from 51% to 59% in females). The ventilation equivalents for O2 and CO2 attained optimum values at a load of 100 W in males and at 50 W in females. On increasing the load they rose in both sexes--in females more than in males. Percentual utilization of O2 from the inspired air was greatest in males at a load of about 100 W (4.8--5%) and in females at about 50 W (4.3--4.8%). At higher loads it fell faster in females than in males. In males, the respiratory quocient attained the value 1 at a load of about 2 W/kg body weight and in females at 1.5 W/kg. At maximum loading it was over 1 in all the age categories. No differences between males and females were observed, but males, in maximum loading, gave the greatest absolute and the greatest relative performance.  相似文献
