ABSTRACT

The effects of animal-assisted support were tested with children identified with emotional disturbance. Forty female children, aged 12 years old, participated in one of two treatments: animal-assisted support or control support. All participants had experienced the death of a parent in the preceding year. When offered animals for their support group, the participants chose reptiles. The reptile-assisted support group discussed death and grief along with training in animal care and identifying displays of emotions and grief. The control group discussed death and grief without reference to, or interactions with, reptiles. Primary caregivers completed the Child Behavior Checklist-Parent version (CBCL-P) before and after the 16-week support group sessions. A repeated measures ANOVA was used to examine the effects of reptile-assisted support on internalizing, externalizing, and other behaviors, as measured by the CBCL-P. The findings suggest that the use of reptile-assisted support improved internalizing behaviors such as withdrawal and somatic behaviors, externalizing behaviors such as aggression/delinquency behaviors, and other behaviors such as social, attention, and thought. Future work is suggested to identify why these children with emotional disturbance chose reptiles rather than pets such as dogs and horses, which are commonly used in animal-assisted programs with children with disabilities.  相似文献

绞股蓝(Gynostemma pentaphyllum)是一种攀援植物,自然条件下攀附其它植物向上生长,利用实验生态学方法,设置两种处理,即有外界支持物(简称支持物)的直立生长和无支持的伏地生长(模拟绞股蓝寻找到和找不到支持物的两种生长情况),以探讨支持物对绞股蓝种群觅养行为和繁殖对策的影响,结果表明:(1)支持物能显著影响叶片生物量比、卷须生物量比、分枝率、比叶面各、叶生物量/支持结构生物量比和叶柄角度,这些影响既体现了绞股蓝种群对异质光环境的生态适应,又反映了伏地生长种群对支持物的“寻找”;(2)支持物能显著影响繁殖分配、繁殖指数、繁殖效率指数、繁殖比率和繁殖产量,这暗示了支持物可显著影响绞股蓝种群的繁殖对策;(3)绞股蓝种群的不同性状对支持物的敏感性存在差异;(4)支持物正是通过改变绞股蓝种群的光资源环境和生长方式进而影响其觅养行为繁殖对策。  相似文献

The case of Xiang as described by Jane Carroll is indeed disconcerting well beyond the immediately apparent factors contained within the article. While Xiang’s direct medical expenses are excessive and his inability to pay for those expenses and further support his noncustodial family seem to be the main issues up for debate, Xiang, however, is likely going to need much more psychosocial support if he is to regain his previous independent functionality or retain any aspect of a quality of life whilst continuing his indefinitely isolated treatment. In this response, I briefly outline the probable effects of Xiang’s current situation on his social identity and mental health as well as a potential way that we can minimize these adverse effects.  相似文献

This study tested the moderating effects of parental social support and consistency of discipline on the relation between adolescents' affiliation with drug-use promoting peers and their subsequent alcohol use. Participants were a subsample (n = 300) of 454 children of alcoholics and matched community controls (ages 101/2-151/2 years). Results indicated that mothers' and fathers' social support and consistency of discipline buffered the effects of peer group affiliation on girls' alcohol use; however, both variables exacerbated peer effects on boys' alcohol use. For girls, results are consistent with the notion that parenting behaviors can serve as protective factors by promoting qualities that serve to resist peer group pressure. For boys, increases in support and discipline behaviors may be interpreted as threats to autonomy.  相似文献

Lumbar spine stability has been extensively researched due to its necessity to facilitate load-bearing human movements and prevent structural injury. The nature of certain human movement tasks are such that they are not equivalent in levels of task-stability (i.e. the stability of the external environment). The goal of the current study was to compare the effects of dynamic lift instability, administered through both the load and base of support, on the dynamic stability (maximal Lyapunov exponents) and stiffness (EMG-driven model) of the lumbar spine during repeated sagittal lifts. Fifteen healthy males performed 23 repetitive lifts with varying conditions of instability at the loading and support interfaces. An increase in spine rotational stiffness occurred during unstable support scenarios resulting in an observed increase in mean and maximum Euclidean norm spine rotational stiffness (p=0.0011). Significant stiffening effects were observed in unstable support conditions about all lumbar spine axes with the exception of lateral bend. Relative to a stable control lifting trial, the addition of both an unstable load as well as an unstable support did not result in a significant change in the local dynamic stability of the lumbar spine (p=0.5592). The results suggest that local dynamic stability of the lumbar spine represents a conserved measure actively controlled, at least in part, by trunk muscle stiffening effects. It is evident therefore that local dynamic stability of the lumbar spine can be modulated effectively within a young-healthy population; however this may not be the case in a patient population.  相似文献

This paper provides a thorough test of important contextual explanations of variation in electoral support for radical right-wing parties. It has been proposed that support of the radical right is particularly strong in areas that are socioeconomically poor and/or where the concentration of immigrants is high. A variant of the latter hypothesis, known as the ‘halo effect’, states that the propensity to vote for the radical right is highest in areas close to immigrant-dense areas, but not within these areas. The data analyses are based on the total population of voting districts in Sweden (N = 5,668), which makes it possible to avoid some of the problems that usually plague studies of contextual effects on voting, such as low numbers of observations. The results demonstrate support for the socioeconomic marginalization hypothesis and, when controlling for socioeconomic factors, the halo effect hypothesis; whereas the support for group threat theory is mixed.  相似文献

To achieve excellent isoelectrofocusing results with the use of Immobiline gels, the quality of the support is essential. Effects such as diffuse bands, missing protein fractions, streaking and trailing could originate from a support of inadequate quality. Artificial support stimulation is known to attenuate or prevent many motor or skeletal muscle effects of actual or simulated microgravity. The fitness of populations adapting to new environments is expected to decline in different environments, but empirical studies often do not lend support for such adaptation costs. We test the idea that the initial fitness of the selected populations in the environment where the cost is estimated is key for interpreting tests of ecological trade‐offs. We isolated single clones of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae every ~250 generations from replicate experimental lineages that had been selected during 5000 generations in a glucose‐limited environment. We then selected these clones in a galactose‐limited environment for ~120 generations. Finally, we estimated single‐clone fitness in both environments, before and after selection on galactose. The pleiotropic effects on glucose of selection on galactose evolved from positive to negative as fitness in glucose increased, providing strong support for the importance of initial fitness for determining the sign and magnitude of pleiotropic effects. This demonstrates that the sign of pleiotropic effects for fitness following adaptation to a new environment can change during long‐term adaptation to an original environment. We also found no relationship between the size of the fitness changes in galactose and glucose, such that pleiotropic effects in glucose became relatively smaller as the sizes of direct effects on galactose increased.  相似文献

There is substantial evidence indicating that moderate-intensity static magnetic fields (SMF) are capable of influencing a number of biological systems, particularly those whose function is closely linked to the properties of membrane channels. Most of the reported moderate SMF effects may be explained on the basis of alterations in membrane calcium ion flux. The mechanism suggested to explain these effects is based on the diamagnetic anisitropic properties of membrane phospholipids. It is proposed that reorientation of these molecules during moderate SMF exposure will result in the deformation of imbedded ion channels, thereby altering their activation kinetics. Channel inactivation would not be expected to be influenced by these fields because this mechanism is not located within the intramembraneous portion of the channel. Patch-clamp studies of calcium channels have provided support for this hypothesis, as well as demonstrating a temperature dependency that is understandable on the basis of the membrane thermotropic phase transition. Additional studies have demonstrated that sodium channels are similarly affected by SMFs, although to a lesser degree. These findings support the view that moderate SMF effects on biological membranes represent a general phenomenon, with some channels being more susceptible than others to membrane deformation.  相似文献

Atrophy of skeletal muscle is a response that is considered as the most consistent under conditions of real and simulated weightlessness. Microgravity is transformed in the motor system into a number of factors, the most important of them are considered axial unloading and support unloading. The effects of support stimulus may be evaluated in studies under conditions of dry immersion (DI) which provides the equal distribution of the mechanical pressure (e.g. hydrostatic pressure) throughout the surface of the body. Thus the deprivation of the gradient of the mechanical pressure simulates the supportless conditions. The study was aimed to test if the support unloading simulated in dry immersion induces not only functional but also structural alterations in human postural muscles.  相似文献

This study proposed a method to quantify direct and indirect effects of the joint torque inputs in the speed-generating mechanism of a swinging motion. Linear and angular accelerations of all segments within a multi-linked system can be expressed as the sum of contributions from a joint torque term, gravitational force term and motion-dependent term (MDT), where the MDT is a nonlinear term consisting of centrifugal force, Coriolis force and gyroscopic effect moment components. Direct effects result from angular accelerations induced by a joint torque at a given instant, whereas indirect effects arise through the MDT induced by joint torques exerted in the past. These two effects were quantified for the kicking-side leg during a rugby place kick. The MDT was the largest contributor to the foot centre of gravity (CG)’s speed at ball contact. Of the factors responsible for generating the MDT, the direct and indirect effects of the hip flexion-extension torque during both the flight phase (from the final kicking foot take-off to support foot contact) and the subsequent support phase (from support foot contact to ball contact) were important contributors to the foot CG’s speed at ball contact. The indirect effect of the ankle plantar-dorsal flexion torque and the direct effect of the knee flexion-extension torque during the support phase showed the largest positive and negative contributions to the foot CG’s speed at ball contact, respectively. The proposed method allows the identification of which individual joint torque axes are crucial and the timings of joint torque exertion that are used to generate a high speed of the distal point of a multi-linked system.  相似文献

Plants in space     
Virtually all scenarios for the long-term habitation of spacecraft and other extraterrestrial structures involve plants as important parts of the contained environment that would support humans. Recent experiments have identified several effects of spaceflight on plants that will need to be more fully understood before plant-based life support can become a reality. The International Space Station (ISS) is the focus for the newest phase of space-based research, which should solve some of the mysteries of how spaceflight affects plant growth. Research carried out on the ISS and in the proposed terrestrial facility for Advanced Life Support testing will bring the requirements for establishing extraterrestrial plant-based life support systems into clearer focus.  相似文献

The Janzen-Connell hypothesis explains the maintenance of tropical diversity through the interacting effects of parent-centered dispersal patterns and distance- and density-dependent propagule survival. These effects were thought to support regular spacing of species within tropical forest, enhancing diversity. One of the predictions of the hypothesis is that seed and seedling survival should improve with increased parental distance. Although there are many independent tests of this hypothesis for individual species, there are few synthetic studies that have brought these data together to test its validity across species. This paper reports the results of a meta-analysis of the effect of distance on enhancing propagule survival, employing an odds-ratio effect size metric. We found no general support for the distance-dependent prediction of the hypothesis, and conclude that further testing to explore this hypothesis as a diversity-maintaining mechanism is unnecessary. However, we did find that distance from parent slightly reduces survivorship in the temperate zone, as contrasted with the tropics, and we saw stronger evidence in support of the hypothesis for seedlings than for seeds. The phenomenon of enhanced propagule survival with distance from the parent may be important for the population biology of particular species, but it is not a general phenomenon across communities, life history stages or life forms.  相似文献

Social anxiety is characterized by an excessive fear of being embarrassed in social interactions or social performance situations. Emotional support can help to decrease or diminish social distress. Such support may play an important role at different points of social interaction. However, it is unclear how the beneficial effects of social support are represented in the brains of socially anxious individuals. To explore this, we used the same paradigm previously used to examine the effects of emotional support on social pain caused by exclusion. Undergraduates (n = 46) showing a wide range of social anxiety scores underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while participating in a Cyberball game. Participants were initially included and later excluded from the game. In the latter half of the session in which participants were excluded, they were provided with supportive messages. In line with our previous work, we found that social exclusion led to increased anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) activity, whereas emotional support led to increased left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) activity. Despite validation of the paradigm, social anxiety was not associated with increased ACC activity during social exclusion, or during perceived emotional support. Instead, fear of negative evaluation as assessed by the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation (BFNE) scale showed positive associations with left DLPFC activation while receiving emotional support, compared to while being socially excluded. The more socially anxious an individual was, the greater was the left DLPFC activity increased during receipt of messages. This suggests that highly socially anxious people still have the ability to perceive social support, but that they are nevertheless susceptible to negative evaluation by others.  相似文献

The results of extended comparative research in the effect of hypogravity on the motor system in space flights and ground-based experiments have shown that “dry” immersion (DI) is the most adequate model of microgravity—the time of development, and the volume and depth of structural and functional motor disorders in DI are very close to what is observed in real microgravity. The high intensity and speed of development of hypogravity effects during immersion hypokinesia in comparison with bed rest hypokinesia, differing from DI only by the level of support deafferentation, promoted an insight into the leading (triggering) role of support lessness in the genesis of microgravity-induced syndromes of muscular deconditioning and hypogravitational ataxia. The involvement and pathways of support afferentation within the muscular system were experimentally studied and verified. The mechanisms of the development of changes in the activity of the system mechanisms remain much less investigated. These issues, as well as some new approaches for the elimination of the negative effects of hypogravity, were the subjects of investigation in the program of a complex dry immersion experiment, the results of which are presented in this issue of the journal.  相似文献

The hypothalamic hormone GnRH was found to potentiate behavioral effects of DOPA and serotonin. In addition, GnRH was observed to reduce slightly audiogenic seizures as well as spontaneous motor activity. No significant effects were observed against footshock induced fighting or oxotremorine effects. These studies support our concept of the actions of hypothalamic peptides on the central nervous system.  相似文献
