Males of many animals perform ‘copulatory courtship’ during copulation, but the possible reproductive significance of this behaviour has seldom been investigated. In some animals, including the spider Physocyclus globosus (Pholcidae), the female discards sperm during or immediately following some copulations. In this study, we determined which of several variables associated with copulation correlated with paternity success in P. globosus when two males mate with a single female. Then, by determining which of these variables also correlated with sperm dumping, we inferred which variables may affect paternity via the mechanism of sperm dumping. Male abdomen vibration (a copulatory courtship behaviour) and male genitalic squeezing both correlated with both paternity and sperm dumping; so, these traits may be favoured by biased sperm dumping. Biased sperm dumping may also be the mechanism by which possible cryptic female choice favours another male trait that was the subject of a previous study, responsiveness to female stridulation.  相似文献

It is now widely recognized that sexual selection has been important in the rapid and divergent evolution of male genital morphology. However, distinguishing among putative mechanisms of sexual selection acting on male genital morphology represents a considerable challenge. Although there is growing evidence that variation in the size and/or shape of male genital structures can determine a male's success in gaining fertilizations, our knowledge of the functional morphology of male genitalia remains limited. Here we examine the functional morphology of genital sclerites that are known to influence paternity in the dung beetle Onthophagus taurus . We show that three of the sclerites form a functionally integrated unit that generates the tubular-shaped spermatophore and delivers its opening to the female's spermathecal duct. A fourth sclerite acts as a holdfast device during copulation. Our observations shed light on the mechanism by which these sclerites influence a male's paternity, and their patterns of phenotypic and genetic (co)variation.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 257–266.  相似文献

Sperm competition theory has traditionally focused on how male allocation responds to female promiscuity, when males compete to fertilize a single clutch of eggs. Here, we develop a model to ask how female sperm use and storage across consecutive reproductive events affect male ejaculate allocation and patterns of mating and paternity. In our model, sperm use (a single parameter under female control) is the main determinant of sperm competition, which alters the effect of female promiscuity on male success and, ultimately, male reproductive allocation. Our theory reproduces the general pattern predicted by existing theory that increased sperm competition favors increased allocation to ejaculates. However, our model predicts a negative correlation between male ejaculate allocation and female promiscuity, challenging the generality of a prevailing expectation of sperm competition theory. Early models assumed that the energetic costs of precopulatory competition and the level of sperm competition are both determined by female promiscuity, which leads to an assumed covariation between these two processes. By modeling precopulatory costs and sperm competition independently, our theoretical framework allows us to examine how male allocation should respond independently to variation in sperm competition and energetic trade‐offs in mating systems that have been overlooked in the past.  相似文献

The influence of male age on reproductive success after a singlemating has been explored widely; however, few studies have investigatedwhether quantitative or qualitative differences in male spermare responsible for the observed patterns. Moreover, the roleof male age on sperm competitive ability has been largely ignored.We examined the importance of male age on the probability andamount of sperm transferred during a single mating and exploredwhether sperm competitive ability varies with male age in thehide beetle Dermestes maculatus, a species where sperm viabilitydoes not vary with male age. We also investigated whether spermtransfer rates varied with female age. We found that the probabilityof sperm transfer and the amount of sperm transferred variedwith male, but not female, age. All males performed behaviorallysuccessful copulations, but intermediate-age and old males weremore likely to transfer sperm successfully and also transferreda greater quantity of sperm than young males. Old males wereless likely to transfer sperm than intermediate-age males, butif they did transfer sperm successfully, they transferred comparableamounts. Sperm competitive ability varied with male age andreflected the quantity of sperm transferred. On average, intermediate-agemales achieved greater fertilization success when competingagainst young or old males than when competing against otherintermediate-age males. Old males were poor competitors againstintermediate-age males, but they achieved significantly higherrates of fertilization when competing against young males. Ourfindings suggest that quantitative differences in the amountof sperm transferred determine male success in sperm competitionin the hide beetle.  相似文献

Odonates were the first group of organisms where sperm competition and last male sperm precedence have been identified. With the development of 10 microsatellites for the emperor dragonfly Anax imperator, the function and priority patterns of the multiple sperm storage organs of females can be studied and compared between species in natural populations. In addition, two microsatellite loci developed for the sister species Anax parthenope, are also highly polymorphic in A. imperator. For the presented 12 microsatellite loci, the number of alleles per locus ranged from two to 24. Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.07 to 0.88.  相似文献

I compared the role of ornate plumage, behavior, and body sizeduring male—male competition in two species of New Worldquail. Gambel's quail (Callipepla gambelii) is a highly ornateand dichromatic species, whereas scaled quail (C. squamata)is unornamented and monochromatic. During paired contests betweenunfamiliar males, high rates of testosterone-mediated behaviors(tidbitting, calling) and large body size (mass, tarsus, andtail length) corresponded to winners. In the highly ornate Gambel's quail, male head plumes also influenced the outcomeof contests. Plume enhancement made Gambel's quail more likelyto win contests, whereas plume removal made males more likelyto lose. Plume position also reflected male status. Winningmales erected plumes, whereas losers frequently flattened them.Some plumage ornaments, such as belly patches, did not playa primary role during male contests. Unlike static ornaments,head plumes are highly modifiable and likely signal immediateinformation regarding a male's intent, similar to a coverablebadge. Combined, intrasexual selection favored dynamic traits(fast display rates, modifiable ornaments) and static traits(body size) as indicators of male condition or motivation.In scaled quail only, male size was favored both by male—malecompetition and female choice. Accordingly, the degree of sizedimorphism (tarsus length) is greater in scaled than in Gambel'squail. The frequency of overt aggression (chases, pecks, displacement)also differed between species. Gambel's quail were very aggressive,and subordinates often challenged their opponents. In contrast, scaled quail were less aggressive, and subordinates rarely disputedrank. Interspecific comparison indicated differences in themaintenance of male status and possibly in the honesty of signaling.Both appear to be related to differences in social system.  相似文献

It is difficult to predict a priori how mating success translates into fertilization success in simultaneous hermaphrodites with internal fertilization. Whereas insemination decisions will be determined by male interests, fertilization will depend on female interests, possibly leading to discrepancies between insemination and fertilization patterns. The planarian flatworm Schmidtea polychroa, a simultaneous hermaphrodite in which mating partners trade sperm was studied. Sperm can be stored for months yet individuals mate frequently. Using microsatellites, maternity and paternity data were obtained from 748 offspring produced in six groups of 10 individuals during four weeks. Adults produced young from four mates on average. Reciprocal fertilization between two mates was found in only 41 out of 110 registered mate combinations, which is clearly less than what is predicted from insemination patterns. Multiple paternity was high: > 80% of all cocoons had two to five fathers for only three to five offspring per cocoon. Because animals were collected from a natural population, 28% of all hatchlings were sired by unknown sperm donors in the field, despite a 10-day period of acclimatization and within-group mating. This percentage decreased only moderately throughout the experiment, showing that sperm can be stored and used for at least a month, despite frequent mating and sperm digestion. The immediate paternity a sperm donor could expect to obtain was only about 25%. Male reproductive success increased linearly with the number of female partners, providing support for Bateman's principle in hermaphrodites. Our results suggest that hermaphrodites do not trade fertilizations when trading sperm during insemination, lending support to the view that such conditional sperm exchange is driven by exchange of resources.  相似文献

Traditional views of sexual selection assumed that male–male competition and female mate choice work in harmony, selecting upon the same traits in the same direction. However, we now know that this is not always the case and that these two mechanisms often impose conflicting selection on male sexual traits. Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) have been shown to be linked to both social dominance and male attractiveness in several insect species. However, although several studies have estimated the strength and form of sexual selection imposed on male CHCs by female mate choice, none have established whether these chemical traits are also subject to sexual selection via male–male competition. Using a multivariate selection analysis, we estimate and compare sexual selection exerted by male–male competition and female mate choice on male CHC composition in the broad‐horned flour beetle Gnatocerus cornutus. We show that male–male competition exerts strong linear selection on both overall CHC abundance and body size in males, while female mate choice exerts a mixture of linear and nonlinear selection, targeting not just the overall amount of CHCs expressed but the relative abundance of specific hydrocarbons as well. We discuss the potential implications of this antagonistic selection with regard to male reproductive success.  相似文献

To capture how sexual selection shapes male reproductive success across different stages of reproduction in Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae), we combined sequential sperm defence (P1) and sperm offence (P2) trials with additional trials where both males were added simultaneously to the female. We found a positive correlation between the relative paternity share in simultaneous male–male competition trials and the P2 trial. This suggests that males preferred by females as sires achieve superior fertilization success during sperm competition in the second male position. In simultaneous male–male competition trials, where pre‐, peri‐ and postcopulatory sexual selection were all allowed to act, the relative paternity share of preferred males was more than 20% higher than in P2 sperm competition trials where precopulatory female choice was disabled. Additional behavioural observations revealed that mating with more attractive males resulted significantly more frequently in offspring production than mating with less attractive males. Thus, by comparing male fertilization success in trials where precopulatory choice was turned off with more inclusive estimates of fertilization success where pre‐ and pericopulatory choice could occur, we show that female mate choice may effectively inhibit sperm competition. We examined evolutionary stable sperm allocation and included stochastic variation in male mating frequency, not included in previous models examining sperm allocation strategies. We assumed sperm mixing and variation in female quality and used a genetic algorithm to analyse the evolution of male sperm allocation. Our results show that males should invest more sperm in initial copulations than in subsequent copulations as a male might fail to mate again. The inclusion of variation in female fecundity had no influence on the evolutionary stable sperm allocation strategy if males were unable to recognize female quality. If males were assumed to allocate sperm in response to female quality, the proportion of sperm allocated was positively correlated with female quality. Moreover, with increasing variance in female quality, males conserved more sperm for later copulations. Literature data on sperm allocation from diverse taxa show a good fit with the predictions given by our model.  相似文献

As sperm production is costly, males are expected to strategically allocate resources to sperm production according to mating opportunities. While sperm number adjustments have been reported in several taxa, only a few studies investigated whether sperm quality shows adaptive plasticity as well. We tested this prediction in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata. A total of 46 males were initially stripped of all retrievable sperm before being randomly allocated to one of two treatments simulating different levels of mating opportunities (visual contact with females or female deprived). After 3 days, males were stripped and sperm velocity was assayed using Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis. Males in the presence of females produced significantly faster sperm than their counterparts. Implications for the evolution of this ejaculate plasticity in the light of results of sperm competition studies are discussed.  相似文献

Sperm competition and cryptic female choice profoundly affect sperm morphology, producing diversity within both species and individuals. One type of within-individual sperm variation is sperm heteromorphism, in which each male produces two or more distinct types of sperm simultaneously, only one of which is typically fertile (the "eusperm"). The adaptive significance of nonfertile "parasperm" types is poorly understood, although numerous sperm-heteromorphic species are known from many disparate taxa. This paper examines in detail two female-centred hypotheses for the evolution and maintenance of this unconventional sperm production strategy. First, we use game theoretical models to establish that parasperm may function to protect eusperm from female-generated spermicide, and to elucidate the predictions of this idea. Second, we expand on the relatively undeveloped idea that parasperm are used by females as a criterion for cryptic female choice, and discuss the predictions generated by this idea compared to other hypotheses proposed to explain sperm heteromorphism. We critically evaluate both hypotheses, suggest ways in which they could be tested, and propose taxa in which they could be important.  相似文献

Contrary to early predictions of sperm competition theory, postcopulatory sexual selection favoring increased investment per sperm (e.g., sperm size, sperm quality) has been demonstrated in numerous organisms. We empirically demonstrate for Drosophila melanogaster that both sperm quality and sperm quantity independently contribute to competitive male fertilization success. In addition to these independent effects, there was a significant interaction between sperm quality and quantity that suggests an internal positive reinforcement on selection for sperm quality, with selection predicted to intensify as investment per sperm increases and the number of sperm competing declines. The mechanism underlying the sperm quality advantage is elucidated through examination of the relationship between female sperm-storage organ morphology and the differential organization of different length sperm within the organ. Our results exemplify that primary sex cells can bear secondary sexual straits.  相似文献

Sperm precedence, defined as nonrandom differential fertilizationsuccess among mating males, is an important postmating componentof sexual selection. This study examined the relationship betweenpremating and postmating components of sexual selection in malesof the flour beetle (Tribolium castanewn). Male olfactory attractivenessto females was positively correlated with a male's subsequentfertilization success: more attractive males achieved highersecond-male sperm precedence when allowed to mate with previouslyinseminated females. Attractive males may achieve compoundedgains in their reproductive success through enhanced matingopportunities as well as through greater fertilization success.Thus, the relationship between these reproductive fitness componentsmay augment differences in reproductive success among males.Female fecundity, estimated as the number of adult progeny produced,increased significantly with multiple malings. This result supportsincreased female reproductive success as a direct benefit ofmultiple mating in T. caslaneum and suggests that progeny productionis partially limited by sperm availability. Total progeny productionby doubly mated females remained constant at all levels of second-malesperm precedence. However, higher sperm precedence was associatedwith a decline in firstmale progeny and a concomitant increasein second-male progeny. This pattern of progeny production suggeststhat more attractive males may achieve higher fertilizationsuccess through a combination of displacement of previouslystored sperm, transfer of greater sperm quantities, or females'preferential use of sperm of attractive males for fertilizations.  相似文献

Male ornaments and armaments that mediate success in mate acquisition and ejaculate traits influencing competitive fertilization success are under intense sexual selection. However, relative investment in these pre‐ and post‐copulatory traits depends on the relative importance of either selection episode and on the energetic costs and fitness gains of investing in these traits. Theoretical and empirical work has improved our understanding of how precopulatory sexual traits and investments in sperm production covary in this context. It has recently also been suggested that male weapon size may trade off with sperm length as another post‐copulatory sexual trait, but the theoretical framework for this suggestion remains unclear. We evaluated the relationship between precopulatory armaments and sperm length, previously reported in ungulates, in five taxa as well as meta‐analytically. Within and between taxa, we found no evidence for a negative or positive relationship between sperm length and male traits that are important in male–male contest competition. It is important to consider pre‐ and post‐copulatory sexual selection together to understand fitness, and to study investments in different reproductive traits jointly rather than separately. A trade‐off between pre‐ and post‐copulatory sexual traits may not manifest itself in sperm length but rather in sperm number or function. Particularly in large‐bodied taxa such as ungulates, sperm number is more variable interspecifically and likely to be under more intense selection than sperm length. In poeciliid fishes, males can gain copulation either by courtingfemales or through sexual coercion. In some species these twotactics coexist. However, in about half of the poeciliids,males do not display, females never cooperate during copulationand all matings are achieved by thrusting the intromittentorgan toward the genital pore of apparently unaware females.In one of these species, the eastern mosquitofish (Gambusiaholbrooki), the probability of insemination is influenced bythe time females are previously deprived of males, suggestingthat females exert some control over the occurrence of matingeven in a system apparently dominated by sexual coercion. Inthe present study we investigated the tendency of female mosquitofishto approach males in relation to their reproductive status and the time they were previously deprived of males. The tendencyto approach males increased in females that were previouslydeprived of males and in females that had recently given birth.When allowed to choose between males, male-deprived femalespreferred larger males and normally pigmented over melanisticmales. Females preferred groups of three males over a singlemale, whereas the preference for three males over a group ofone male and two females was only marginally significant. Collectively,these results suggest that, even when coercive mating is theonly tactic adopted by males, females may be able to influencethe outcome of these attempts, and thus exert some controlover the paternity of their offspring.  相似文献
