BackgroundOnychocryptosis (ingrown toenail) and onychomycosis are common pathologies of the toenail and affecting many people. Since levels of trace elements have been shown to vary in certain diseases, in the presented work, chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) levels of toenail and serum samples of healthy individuals and patients with onychocryptosis and onychomycosis were compared.MethodsSerum and toenail samples of 88 voluntary subjects (healthy n = 24; onychomycosis n = 24; onychocryptosis n = 40) aged between 19–80 years were collected. Levels of trace elements in the samples were analyzed by using an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES Thermo iCAP - 6000). The differences in medians between the groups for elements were evaluated with Kruskal -Wallis H test with post hoc for pairwise comparisons in SPSS 18.ResultsMg (p < 0.001) and Mn (p = 0.002) levels were significantly increased whereas Zn (p = 0.011) level was decreased in toenails of patients with onychomycosis compared to healthy subjects. Although Mg and Mn levels were higher in female subjects with onychomycosis (p = 0.001; p = 0.019), Mn was only increased in male subjects (p = 0.015). Mg was the only trace element found to be independent of sex, age, and smoking status in patients with onychomycosis. However, no significant difference has been found in serum trace element levels neither between any groups nor toenail trace element levels of patients with onychocryptosis and healthy subjects.ConclusionAs a response of the human body to pathogens like fungi in toenails, Mg, Mn and Zn levels vary. Especially the role of Mg ions in onychomycosis needs to be investigated more specifically.  相似文献

Reference values in biological specimens are crucial to estimate the type and magnitude of environmental and occupational exposure: Because of its importance in the excretion of noxious substances and to the noninvasive mode of its collection, urine is a useful specimen for monitoring studies. Thus, the concentrations of six trace elements (Al, Co, Mo, Nb, Ni, and Ti) were determined in 100 urine samples of the Budapestian population by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The obtained creatinine adjusted concentrations (medians) are (in μg/g) 9.9, 0.6, 53.5, 0.4, 1.5, and 8.5 for Al, Co, Mo, Nb, Ni, and Ti, respectively.  相似文献

Concentrations of the 18 elements, barium (Ba), beryllium (Be), bismuth (Bi), calcium (Ca), cadmium (Cd), cesium (Cs), copper (Cu), lanthanum (La), lithium (Li), magnesium (Mg), molybdenum (Mo), lead (Pb), rubidium (Rb), antimony (Sb), tin (Sn), strontium (Sr), thallium (Tl), and zinc (Zn), were determined in the synovial fluids of osteoarthritic knee joints and in the corresponding sera of 16 patients by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Knee-joint effusions have lower elemental concentrations than their corresponding sera. For the essential elements Ca, Cu, Mg, and Zn and for the nonessential and toxic elements Ba, Be, Bi, La, and Sb, this difference was highly significant. Strong positive correlations between concentrations in effusions and sera for the essential elements Cu and Mg and for the nonessential elements Cs, Li, Rb, and Sr could be established. The grade of localized hyperperfusion of the knee region in the blood pool phase of 99mTc HDP bone scan indicating inflammation did not correlate with any elemental concentration determined. The ability of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) to uptake Ag, Ba, Cd, Mo, and Pb from waters in gold mine tailing area was studied. All experiments were carried out in the field conditions without using of model system. Bioconcentration (BCF) and translocation factors (TF) as well as elements accumulation by plant in different points of tailings-impacted area were evaluated. It has been shown that water hyacinth demonstrates high ability to accumulate Mo, Pb, and Ba with BCF values 24,360 ± 3600, 18,800 ± 2800 and 10,040 ± 1400, respectively and is efficient in translocation of Mo and Cd. The general trend of the plant accumulation ability in relation to the studied elements corresponds to their concentration in the medium. As the distance from tailings increases, concentration of Ag, Ba and Pb in plant decreases more clearly than that of Cd, while the amount of Mo accumulated by plant doesn't drop significantly in accordance with its concentration in water. Under the conditions of the confluence of river Ur and drainage stream Ba and Ag can be considered as potential candidates for phytomining.  相似文献

Recent brain research reveals a major role of trace elements in various diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's and Wilson's disease. The majority of published tissue concentrations dates back decades, and was assessed with various methods. Little is known about hemispherical differences, the correlation of trace elements or age-dependent changes in the human brain. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine trace element concentrations in different human brain regions after whole brain formalin fixation.549 samples of 13 brain regions were investigated in 11 deceased subjects without known history of brain pathology. Regional wet-to-dry mass ratios and concentrations of iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, calcium and zinc were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.Cortical gray matter revealed higher water content (wet-to-dry mass ratios 5.84–6.40) than white matter regions (wet-to-dry mass ratios 2.95–3.05). Element concentrations displayed specific regional differences. Good linear correlation of concentrations between elements was found for iron/copper as well as for manganese/magnesium (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient 0.74 and 0.65, respectively). Significant inter-hemispherical differences were found for copper in occipital white matter, for magnesium and calcium in putamen and for iron and copper in temporal white matter. An age dependent increase was seen in cortical gray matter for calcium, for magnesium in all regions except in cortical gray matter, for copper in substantia nigra and for zinc in occipital cortex. The presented trace element concentrations can serve as a fundamental basis for further brain research. Wet-to-dry mass ratios allow a comparison with reference data from other studies.  相似文献

Accurate and precise analytical data of the concentrations of bioanalytes in bioclinical studies are of fundamental importance. Quality assurance procedures should always be performed to check the overall analytical work. This can be conveniently performed if appropriate standard reference materials with known concentrations of the analyte object of study are available. This paper underlines the key points related to the production and use of biological standard materials for trace element analysis. In particular, the present situation in the field of trace element determination in human biological fluids and the related problems are illustrated. The considerations given in this work may contribute to the preparation of the new biomarker standard materials.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the levels of cadmium, lead, iron, zinc, selenium, manganese, copper and molybdenum in different cuts of beef, pork, lamb, chicken and foal collected from supermarkets and butcheries in Switzerland. The concentrations of manganese, copper, molybdenum, zinc, iron, selenium, cadmium and lead were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave digestion. Mean values and their respective coefficients of variation were calculated from the measured concentrations. The concentrations found for cadmium and lead ranged from 0.6 to 3.9 μg/100 g and 1.0 to 2.1 μg/100 g, respectively. Concentrations ranged between 0.5 and 3.3 mg/100 g for iron, 0.7 and 5.1 mg/100 g for zinc, 9 and 44 μg/100 g for selenium, 3.1 and 16.7 μg/100 g for manganese, 0.3 and 132 μg/100 g for copper and 0.9 and 3.2 μg/100 g for molybdenum. Differences found for the concentrations in meat from different species as well as between the individual meat cuts were notable for iron, zinc, selenium and copper. Manganese concentrations were found to vary unsystematically within muscles and species. Molybdenum concentrations were higher in chicken meat in comparison with the mammalian meats. The highest coefficients of variation were found for manganese (13% to 142%) and copper (13% to 224%), while the lowest was found for zinc (4% to 45%). In conclusion, in order to provide an accurate overview and to be able to calculate reliable dietary intakes, it is important to include the variability in food composition data.  相似文献

BackgroundImbalances in metal concentrations have been suggested to contribute to the pathophysiology of different brain disorders, such as bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SCZ).ObjectivesThe aim of this exploratory study is to evaluate the association between the concentrations of macro/trace elements in serum from BD and SCZ patients considering the effects from different treatments.MethodsEleven subjects with SCZ, seven with BD treated with lithium (BDL) and eight subjects with BD treated with other medications except lithium (BDN) were recruited for the study, as well as eleven healthy controls (HC). Serum concentrations of eleven macro/trace elements (Se, Zn, Fe, K, Ca, Mg, P, Al, Cu, Mn, and Ni) were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).ResultsSe and Zn concentrations were significantly lower for patients with SCZ and BD in comparison to HC by one-way ANOVA test. Moreover, serum concentrations for Fe were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in BDN (548 ± 92 μg L−1) and SCZ (632 ± 279 μg L−1) in comparison to HC (421 ± 121 μg L−1). A significant negative correlation was reported between Se and Fe in BDL group (r = −0.935, p < 0.05). In addition, a significantly higher Cu/Zn ratio was determined in SCZ group against HC (ratio = 2.4, p = 0.028).ConclusionsThe obtained results suggest that the imbalance in Fe concentrations is an effect of BD treatment. Lithium is supposed to have an antagonist effect for Se in BDL patients. A negative correlation reported between Fe and BMI in SCZ group could be related to antipsychotic treatment and the Cu/Zn ratio reported could be considered as a suggesting parameter to relate oxidative stress to SCZ. Future studies including larger number of patients with SCZ and BD before and after treatment are necessary to confirm the investigative results presented herein.  相似文献

Juvenile trumpeters Pelates sexlineatus , two main prey items (amphipods and polychaetes) and seagrass constituents (detritus, young and old leaves of Zostera capricorni ) were collected from two sites within six estuaries, to compare the spatial variability of elemental composition (Li, Mn, Sr, Cd, Ba and Pb). Average elemental values were lower in the fish otoliths except for Sr. Significant differences in elemental composition of otoliths were detected among estuaries (Mn and Pb). Spatial differences in concentrations of Cd were found in amphipods and polychaetes; the latter also showed differences for Ba and Pb. Detritus and Z. capricorni leaves showed appreciable spatial differences for most of the elements. Spatial variability between sites was generally high. There were differences in the multivariate composition of trace elements found in the otoliths of fish among estuaries. One estuary was consistently separated from the other estuaries in the ordinations. Significant correlations were detected between concentrations of Mn in otoliths and concentrations in prey, Z. capricorni and detritus. A significant relationship was also detected between Pb in otoliths and detritus. There were significant correlations between concentrations of Mn, Sr and Ba in detritus and that in otoliths. The study demonstrated that trophic transfer and habitat constituents may be considered as a potential source for some of the elemental accumulation in fish otoliths.  相似文献

The determination of trace and ultratrace elements in human serum by ICP-MS is described. The accuracy of the method is tested using a “second generation” human serum reference material. Elements determined include Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, Sr, Mo, and Cs. The method is compared to nuclear analytical methods (NAA, PIXE). Perspectives for the future are also discussed.  相似文献

Reference values for trace and ultratrace elements concentrations in healthy human serum, measured by double-focusing inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), are presented. Blood donors from Asturias (Spain) were selected as the reference population (n=59). Blood samples were collected, after donation, taking the necessary precautions to avoid contamination. All subjects analyzed had normal renal function and nutritional status, as shown from their creatinine and albumin levels. A total number of 14 elements (Al, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cd, Pb, and U) were monitored almost simultaneously. Serum samples were diluted 1+4 with ultrapure water and matrix interferences were corrected using Sc, Ga, Y, and Tl as internal standards. Fe, Cu, and Zn were also determined by isotope dilution analysis (IDA). Reference trace element concentrations intervals observed containing 95% of the reference distribution after excluding outliers are presented. Fourteen serum samples from hemodialysis patients were also analyzed for comparison. High levels of Al, Cr, Sr, Mo, Mn, Pb, U, Co, and Cu and low levels of Fe, Zn, and Rb were found in the serum samples from hemodialysis patients compared to the corresponding reference values observed in this work.  相似文献

Activities of whole blood glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) and serum levels of selenium (Se), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) were measured in 118 apparently healthy subjects aged 20–60 years from the city of Ponta Delgada, Island of San Miguel, The Azores Archipelago, Portugal. Data were analysed by age/gender, lipid profile and blood pressure as cardiovascular risk factors searching for their relevance when assessing reference values for antioxidant biomarkers. GSH-Px was in the same range, but SOD was significantly lower than in other Portuguese populations. Neither activity differed with gender. GSH-Px activity increased with age, namely in normolipidemic men versus the hyperlipidemic group in which a decrease was observed. This suggests a progressive impairment of GSH-Px with age caused by an enhanced production of oxidant species in hyperlipidemia. GSH-Px was 30% lower in male hypertensives versus normotensives. SOD activity did not relate to age or blood pressure but was 17% higher in the hyperlipidemic men versus the normolipidemic group, suggesting a better antioxidant protection by SOD than by GSH-Px in hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Se was higher in men versus women, particularly in the older subjects, and partly related to hyperlipidemia. Zn levels showed a similar dependency on gender, not related to age or lipid profile. Cu levels were much higher in women than in men in all age or lipid profile classes and decreased in hyperlipidemia. They were lowered with age in both genders, particularly in normolipidemic women. The present research therefore suggests that hyperlipidemia and hypertension do affect antioxidant status and should be considered when assessing antioxidant biomarkers in blood.  相似文献

The multivariate statistical methods (cluster analysis and discriminant analysis [DA]) are used to evaluate the quality of water spatiotemporally in the Brahmani River basin. A total of 15 water quality indicators (pH, Chloramines, Sodium, Sulfate, Phosphate, Potassium, Boron, Fluoride, Cadmium, Copper, Lead, Nickel, Zinc, Iron, and Total Chromium) are collected for 13 years in two seasons (the dry and the wet season) from nine sampling stations. These stations are grouped into four clusters (Considerable [Co], Low Pollution [LP], Moderate Pollution [MP], and Extreme Pollution [(EP]) by hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis based on the similarities of water quality characteristics. The nine important influencing discriminating water quality indicators are extracted by stepwise method of temporal DA,where as eight important influencing indicators for dry season and eight indicators (Potassium, Phosphate, Fluoride, Copper, Lead, Nickel, Iron, and Total Chromium) for wet season are found out by the spatial DA. The pollution status in the river basin was observed from overall trend in (Considerable) Co to (Extreme Pollution) EP regions. The study could be very useful in prioritizing the important sites for water resources and pollution management.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the concentration changes of 13 elements in erythrocytes and plasma after the removal of dental amalgam, and other metal alloys. Blood samples from 250 patients were collected, separated into erythrocytes and plasma, and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The 250 patients were divided into 3 groups (Negative, Zero, and Positive) depending on their estimation of quality of life in an earlier study. Magnesium in plasma, selenium and mercury in plasma, and erythrocytes showed decreased concentrations after amalgam removal in all groups (p<0.05). Titanium in plasma, copper in plasma, and erythrocytes and zinc in plasma exhibited decreased concentrations after amalgam removal in the Negative and Positive groups (p<0.05), Silver in plasma and gold in erythrocytes decreased in the Zero and Positive groups after amalgam removal (p<0.05). Copper in erythrocytes and silver and gold in plasma showed higher concentrations after amalgam removal in the Negative compared to the Positive group (p<0.05), suggesting that patients in the Negative group excrete metals slowly. Moreover, the cobalt levels in plasma were lowest in the Negative group and only this group showed a significant increase in vitamin B12 levels in blood after amalgam removal.  相似文献

The critical problem confronting all allometric studies is the choice of an appropriate size variable, especially when body mass or some other measure of total size is unavailable. A method proposed by Jolicoeur (1963a,b) claims to generate an internal size variable by a principal components analysis of the covariance matrix of logarithmically transformed data, from which allometric coefficients can be computed. Despite the current popularity of this method, the precise relationship and degree of compatibility between such multivariate coefficients and the exponent of the bivariate power function (Y = βXα) is unknown. This study evaluates the comparability and interpretability of allometric values computed by Jolicoeur's procedure and by standard bivariate regressions (least squares and major axis). Two primate data sets with known measures of size were utilized for these purposes: (1) longitudinal growth data from radiographs of two species of capuchin monkeys, Cebus apella and Cebus albifrons; and (2) interspecific osteometric data from a series of adult lemurs, species of prosimians from Madagascar. Consistent differences exist between multivariate and bivariate allometric coefficients for both ontogenetic and static data sets. Multivariate analysis underestimated the coefficients in the former and overestimated them in the latter. The internal size variable generated by principal components analysis is clearly not equivalent to, and hence not a suitable substitute for, known measures of size. Moreover, multivariate coefficients are very sensitive to the composition of variables in a given data set; α values of a variable changed appreciably depending on the other variables included in the analysis. The multivariate coefficients are also sample-specific, and provide misleading biological information when compared between samples (e.g., between species of capuchin monkey). For allometric investigations designed to evaluate scaling parameters relative to total size, alternative analytical solutions to the Jolicoeur method should be considered.  相似文献

This article describes a study where the trace elements (TEs) of four groups of volunteers were analyzed. The volunteers were divided into four groups A, B, C, and D. Group A was made up of healthy subjects, group B was made up of volunteers who had just been diagnosed as having naso-pharyngeal cancer (NPC), group C was made up of volunteers who had been diagnosed as having NPC after 3 mo of treatment, and group D was made up of volunteers who had been diagnosed as having NPC after 6 mo of treatment. In all groups, 11 trace elements in hair were analyzed. Our study shows that the concentrations of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and cobalt (Co) in group B are less than that of group A, whereas the concentration of titanium (Ti) in group B is higher. Our results also show that the difference in the level of TEs between group A and the other groups is dramatically decreased as the time of the treatment is increased. This may be a reflection of successful treatment.  相似文献

The heterogeneity properties shown by cells or unicellular organisms have led to the development of analytical methods at the single-cell level. In this sense, considering the importance of trace elements in these biological systems, the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) configured for analyzing single cell has presented a high potential to assess the evaluation of elements in cells. Moreover, advances in instrumentation, such as coupling laser ablation to the tandem configuration (ICP-MS/MS), or alternative mass analyzers (ICP-SFMS and ICP-TOFMS), brought significant benefits, including sensitivity improvement, high-resolution imaging, and the cell fingerprint. From this perspective, the single-cell ICP-MS has been widely reported in studies involving many fields, from oncology to environmental research. Hence, it has contributed to finding important results, such as elucidating nanoparticle toxicity at the cellular level and vaccine development. Therefore, in this review, the theory of single-cell ICP-MS analysis is explored, and the applications in this field are pointed out. In addition, the instrumentation advances for single-cell ICP-MS are addressed.  相似文献
