This study aims to assess the levels of extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF‐MF) emitted from portable hand‐held fans (HHFs) and their principal frequency and to identify factors influencing these levels. We collected a total of eleven models of HHF and monitored the ELF‐MF as a function of fan speed and distance from the fan. EMDEX II was used to monitor the ELF‐MF. An SMP2 EMF‐meter equipped with a P400 field probe was used to determine the levels of ELF‐MF and the frequency spectrum. Ten of the fans, excluding only one bladeless‐fan model, emitted a high level of ELF‐MF near the source of the HHF direct‐current motor. The maximum measured level of ELF‐MF ranged from 14.07 to 218.7 µT. All measurements of the ELF‐MF taken within 10 cm from the HHFs showed values higher than 1.0 µT. ELF‐MF levels were found to decrease markedly with distance, regardless of the HHF product. The level of ELF‐MF rose noticeably with increased fan speed. The speed of and distance from the HHF significantly influenced the level of ELF‐MF. All principal frequencies ranged from 1 to 300 Hz, which falls in the typical range of ELF. From 2013 to 2018, in‐situ measurements of radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMF) and extremely low‐frequency (ELF) electric and magnetic fields in 317 existing and under‐construction children's playground facilities, in 16 municipalities all over Greece, were carried out by the Greek Atomic Energy Commission (EEAE). These measurements were conducted following legislative framework established in 2009, which requires that compliance with the established exposure limits for EMFs should be verified in playground areas. The results are presented by the value of the electric field (E) and exposure ratio (Λ) for the RF EMF, as well as the value of the electric field (E) and magnetic flux density (B) for the ELF electric and magnetic fields. Statistical analysis tools were applied on measurement data and conclusions have been made, taking into consideration: (i) environment type (urban/suburban), and (ii) vicinity to any transmitting installations. Measurement results correspond to the typical EMF background levels for each environment type. Concerning the environment type, RF EMF, and ELF electric/magnetic field measurements reveal no differentiation between urban and suburban environments. We investigated memory impairment in newly hatched chicks following in ovo exposure to a 50‐Hz magnetic field (MF) of 2 mT (60 min/day) on embryonic days 12–18. Isolated and paired chicks were used to test the effect of stress during training, and memory retention was tested at 10, 30, and 120 min, following exposure to a bitter‐tasting bead (100% methylanthranilate). Results showed that memory was intact at 10 min in both isolated and paired chicks with or without MF exposure. However, while isolated chicks had good memory retention levels at 30 and 120 min, those exposed to MF did not. The results suggest a potential disruption of memory formation following in ovo exposure to MF, with this effect only evident in the more stressed, isolated chicks. The free‐radical theory of male infertility suggests that reactive oxygen species produced by the spermatozoa themselves are a leading cause of sperm dysfunction, including loss of sperm motility. However, the field is overshadowed on several fronts, primarily because: i) the probes used to measure reactive oxygen species (ROS) are imprecise; and ii) many reports suggesting that oxygen radicals are detrimental to sperm function add an exogenous source of ROS. Herein, a more reliable approach to measure superoxide anion production by human spermatozoa based on MS analysis is used. Furthermore, the formation of the lipid‐peroxidation product 4‐hydroxynonenal (4‐HNE) during in vitro incubation using proteomics is also investigated. The data demonstrate that neither superoxide anion nor other free radicals that cause 4‐HNE production are related to the loss of sperm motility during incubation. Interestingly, it appears that many of the 4‐HNE adducted proteins, found within spermatozoa, originate from the prostate. A quantitative SWATH analysis demonstrate that these proteins transiently bind to sperm and are then shed during in vitro incubation. These proteomics‐based findings propose a revised understanding of oxidative stress within the male reproductive tract.  相似文献

Microfluidics and photonics come together to form a field commonly referred to as ‘optofluidics’. Flow cytometry provides the field with a technology base from which both microfluidic and photonic components be developed and integrated into a useful device. This article reviews some of the more recent developments to familiarize a reader with the current state of the technologies and also highlights the requirements of the device and how researchers are working to meet these needs. Within two years of the re‐discovery of Mendelism, Bateson and Saunders had described six traits in non‐laboratory animals (five in chickens and one in cattle) that show single‐locus (Mendelian) inheritance. In the ensuing decades, much progress was made in documenting an ever‐increasing number of such traits. In 1987 came the first discovery of a causal mutation for a Mendelian trait in non‐laboratory animals: a non‐sense mutation in the thyroglobulin gene (TG), causing familial goitre in cattle. In the years that followed, the rate of discovery of causal mutations increased, aided mightily by the creation of genome‐wide microsatellite maps in the 1990s and even more mightily by genome assemblies and single‐nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chips in the 2000s. With sequencing costs decreasing rapidly, by 2012 causal mutations were being discovered in non‐laboratory animals at a rate of more than one per week. By the end of 2012, the total number of Mendelian traits in non‐laboratory animals with known causal mutations had reached 499, which was half the number of published single‐locus (Mendelian) traits in those species. The distribution of types of mutations documented in non‐laboratory animals is fairly similar to that in humans, with almost half being missense or non‐sense mutations. The ratio of missense to non‐sense mutations in non‐laboratory animals to the end of 2012 was 193:78. The fraction of non‐sense mutations (78/271 = 0.29) was not very different from the fraction of non‐stop codons that are just one base substitution away from a stop codon (21/61 = 0.34).  相似文献

Quantitative research especially in the social, but also in the biological sciences has been limited by the availability and applicability of analytic techniques that elaborate interactions among behaviours, treatment effects, and mediating variables. This gap has been filled by a newly developed statistical technique, known as graphical interaction modelling. The merit of graphical models for analyzing highly structured data is explored in this paper by an empirical study on coping with a chronic condition as a function of interrelationships between three sets of factors. These include background factors, illness context factors, and four self‐care practices. Based on a graphical chain model, the direct and indirect dependencies are revealed and discussed in comparison to the results obtained from a simple logistic regression model ignoring possible interaction effects. Both techniques are introduced from a more tutorial point of view instead of going far into technical details.  相似文献

1. Density‐ and trait‐mediated indirect interactions (DMIIs and TMIIs, respectively) in food chains play crucial roles in community structure and processes. However, factors affecting the relative strength of these interactions are poorly understood, including in widespread and important freshwater rice ecosystems. 2. We studied the strength of DMIIs and TMIIs in a food chain involving a predator (the Reeve’s turtle Chinemys reevesii), its herbivorous prey (the apple snail Pomacea canaliculata) and a plant (rice Oryza sativa) in outdoor containers simulating rice fields. We also evaluated consumptive and non‐consumptive effects of the predator on the snail. We removed a fixed proportion of snails every 2 days to simulate prey consumption and introduced a caged turtle that was fed daily with snails to simulate non‐consumptive effects. 3. Direct consumptive effects increased growth of the remaining snails and their per capita feeding rate. Moreover, consumptive and non‐consumptive effects, and their interaction, affected the proportion of snails buried in the soil. This interaction was presumably because increasing food availability per snail induced their self‐burying behaviour. 4. Both DMIIs and TMIIs affected the number of rice plants remaining, whereas their interaction term was not significant. 5. In summary, density dependence and interactions between consumptive and non‐consumptive effects influenced snail growth and behaviour, respectively. However, no cascading effects of these complicated interactions on rice plants were detected.  相似文献

Evidence from epidemiological and animal studies showed that exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF‐MF) could produce deleterious effects on reproduction. In order to investigate the possible mechanism of MF exposure on reproductive effects, first trimester human chorionic villi at 8–10 weeks' gestation were obtained, and trophoblasts were isolated, cultured, and exposed to a 50‐Hz MF for different durations. The human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and progesterone in the culture medium was measured by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. The mRNA levels of apoptosis‐related genes bcl‐2, bax, caspase‐3, p53, and fas in trophoblasts were analyzed using real‐time RT‐PCR. The results showed that exposure of trophoblasts to MF at 0.2 mT for 72 h did not affect secretion of hCG and progesterone from these cells. There was also no significant change in secretion of these hormones when trophoblasts were exposed to a 0.4 mT MF for 48 h. However, MF significantly inhibited hCG and progesterone secretion of trophoblasts after exposure for 72 h at 0.4 mT. Results of apoptosis‐related gene expression analysis showed that, within 72 h of exposure at 0.4 mT, there was no significant difference between MF exposure and control on the expression pattern of each gene. Based on results of the present experiment, it is suggested that exposure to MF for a longer duration (72 h) could inhibit secretion of hCG and progesterone by human first trimester villous trophoblasts, however, the effect might not be related to trophoblast apoptosis. Climatic or environmental change is not only driving distributional shifts in species today, but it has also caused distributions to expand and contract in the past. Inferences about the geographic locations of past populations especially regions that served as refugia (i.e., source populations) and migratory routes are a challenging endeavour. Refugial areas may be evidenced from fossil records or regions of temporal stability inferred from ecological niche models. Genomic data offer an alternative and broadly applicable source of information about the locality of refugial areas, especially relative to fossil data, which are either unavailable or incomplete for most species. Here, we present a pipeline we developed (called x ‐origin ) for statistically inferring the geographic origin of range expansion using a spatially explicit coalescent model and an approximate Bayesian computation testing framework. In addition to assessing the probability of specific latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates of refugial or source populations, such inferences can also be made accounting for the effects of temporal and spatial environmental heterogeneity, which may impact migration routes. We demonstrate x ‐origin with an analysis of genomic data collected in the Collared pika that underwent postglacial expansion across Alaska, as well as present an assessment of its accuracy under a known model of expansion to validate the approach.  相似文献

The food industry in Australia (agriculture and manufacturing) plays a fundamental role in contributing to socioeconomic sectors nationally. However, alongside the benefits, the industry also produces environmental burdens associated with the production of food. Sectorally, agriculture is the largest consumer of water. Additionally, land degradation, greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and waste generation are considered the main environmental impacts caused by the industry. The research project aims to evaluate the eco‐efficiency performance of various subsectors in the Australian agri‐food systems through the use of input‐output–oriented approaches of data envelopment analysis and material flow analysis. This helps in establishing environmental and economic indicators for the industry. The results have shown inefficiencies during the life cycle of food production in Australia. Following the principles of industrial ecology, the study recommends the implementation of sustainable processes to increase efficiency, diminish undesirable outputs, and decrease the use of nonrenewable inputs within the production cycle. Broadly, the research outcomes are useful to inform decision makers about the advantages of moving from a traditional linear system to a circular production system, where a sustainable and efficient circular economy could be created in the Australian food industry.  相似文献

Materials flow analysis (MFA) is one of the central achievements of industrial ecology. One direction in which one can move MFA beyond mere accounting is by putting the material flows in their social context. This “socially extended MFA” may be carried out at various levels of aggregation. In this article, specific material flows will be linked to concrete actors and mechanisms that cause these flows—using the action‐in‐context (AiC) framework, which contains, inter alia, both proximate and indirect actors and factors. The case study site is of Tat hamlet in Vietnam, set in a landscape of paddy fields on valley floors surrounded by steep, previously forested slopes. Out of the aggregate MFA of Tat, the study focuses on material flows associated with basic needs and sustainability. The most important actors causing these material flows are farming households, politicians, traders, and agribusiness firms—of which local politicians turned out to be pivotal. The study shows the value of combining MFA with actor‐based social analysis. MFA achieves the balanced quantification of the physical system, thus helping to pinpoint key processes. Actor‐based analysis adds the causal understanding of what drives these key processes, leading to improved scenarios of the future and the effective identification of target groups and instruments for policy making.  相似文献

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of tris(2,2’‐bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) [Ru(bpy)32+] is an active research area and includes the synthesis of ECL‐active materials, mechanistic studies and broad applications. Extensive research has been focused on this area, due to its scientific and practical importance. In this mini‐review we focus on the bio‐related applications of ECL. After a brief introduction to Ru(bpy)32+ ECL and its mechanisms, its application in constructing an effective bioassay is discussed in detail. Three types of ECL assay are covered: DNA, immunoassay and functional nucleic acid sensors. Finally, future directions for these assays are discussed. In this work, two protein systems, Kij3D? FMN? AKM? O2 and Kij3D? FMN? O2, made of KijD3 N‐oxygenase, flavin mononucleotide (FMN) cofactor, dTDP‐3‐amino‐2,3,6‐trideoxy‐4‐keto‐3‐methyl‐D ‐glucose (AKM) substrate, and dioxygen (O2), have been assembled by adding a molecule of O2, and removing (or not) AKM, to crystal data for the Kij3D? FMN? AKM complex. Egress of AKM and O2 from these systems was then investigated by applying a tiny external random force, in turn, to their center of mass in the course of molecular dynamics in explicit H2O. It turned out that the wide AKM channel, even when emptied, does not constitute the main route for O2 egress. Other routes appear to be also viable, while various binding pockets (BPs) outside the active center are prone to trap O2. By reversing the reasoning, these can also be considered as routes for uptake of O2 by the protein, before or after AKM uptake, while BPs may serve as reservoirs of O2. This shows that the small molecule O2 is capable of permeating the protein by exploiting all nearby interstices that are created on thermal fluctuations of the protein, rather than having necessarily to look for farther, permanent channels.  相似文献

The impact of trapping on the recombination dynamics in polymer:fullerene blends is clarified using the highly ordered bulk heterojunction (BHJ) blend poly[2,5‐bis(3‐tetradecylthiophen‐2‐yl)thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene] (PBTTT) and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) at different weight ratios as a model system. The recombination dynamics are determined using both transient charge extraction and steady‐state techniques. The results show that both the decay of photogenerated charge and the light ideality factor at a polymer:fullerene weight ratio of 1:4 are fully consistent with 2D Langevin recombination; in the 1:1 case the recombination is seen to be affected by electron trapping. The theory of 2D Langevin recombination is extended to the case with high trap density in agreement with the observations in the 1:1 case. The recombination capture coefficients are derived both for trap‐assisted and band‐to‐band recombination and it can be seen that anisotropic charge transport reduces the capture coefficients in both cases resulting in a reduced overall recombination.  相似文献

Electron transfer (ET) reactions are important for their implications in both oxidative and reductive DNA damages. The current contribution investigates the efficacy of caffeine, a xanthine alkaloid in preventing UVA radiation induced ET from a carcinogen, benzo[a]pyrene (BP) to DNA by forming stable caffeine–BP complexes. While steady‐state emission and absorption results emphasize the role of caffeine in hosting BP in aqueous medium, the molecular modeling studies propose the energetically favorable structure of caffeine–BP complex. The picosecond‐resolved emission spectroscopic studies precisely explore the caffeine‐mediated inhibition of ET from BP to DNA under UVA radiation. The potential therapeutic activity of caffeine in preventing DNA damage has been ensured by agarose gel electrophoresis. Furthermore, time‐gated fluorescence microscopy has been used to monitor caffeine‐mediated exclusion of BP from various cell lines including squamous epithelial cells, WI‐38 (fibroblast), MCF‐7 (breast cancer) and HeLa (cervical cancer) cells. Our in vitro and ex vivo experimental results provide imperative evidences about the role of caffeine in modified biomolecular recognition of a model carcinogen BP by DNA resulting dissociation of the carcinogen from various cell lines, implicating its potential medicinal applications in the prevention of other toxic organic molecule induced cellular damages.
