Analysis of the division rates of Paramecium aurelia (mutant), Blepharisma undulans, and Histrio complanatus grown separately in pedigree isolation culture with the same culture medium, and in the same room at any given time, for a period of 3 years, discloses a secular trend and a seasonal rhythm for each organism. The seasonal rhythm is a yearly cycle with a maximum during July. 2. After removal of the effects of trend and seasonal rhythm, no correlation is found between the division rates of the several organisms. The distribution of the division rates is then one of chance order, except for large deviations known to be associated with changes in the culture technique. Each organism has a division rate varying independently of the others. 3. Consequently, seasonal rhythm alone has forced similar variations in the division rates of these three protozoans. The seasonal effect is gradually lost when the animals are raised for several years under laboratory conditions. Examination of the literature discloses other similar cases. 4. It is clear that unless all of the conditions of experiment are kept constant, one must analyze all protozoan division rate data in some such manner as that here presented before any conclusions may be drawn as to the existence of "cycles" or "rhythms."  相似文献

Illus. 1961.—Photomicrographic records of the growth of a Phleum root, made at R. H. Goodwin's laboratory, in which individual epidermal cells can be identified, have been analyzed to provide estimates of the probability that cells at various distances from the apex will divide. In the apical part of the meristem, from 0μ to about 100μ from the apex, all cells divide (prob. = 1.0). From about 100μ to 275μ, the probability of division falls progressively to 0.0. The relationship of these estimates to rates of cell division and elongation in the same root is discussed.  相似文献

The division rate of Cricosphaera elongata was measured as a function of pH in a medium buffered with the CO2-bicarbonate-carbonate system. The optimum pH for cell division of the coccolithophorid was 7.8. A change of the partial pressure of CO2 in the medium from 0.03 to 5% did not affect the division rate. Between pH 6.4 and 7.8 changes in the bicarbonate concentration from 0.1 to 6.0 mm and carbonate concentration from 0.007 to 0.1 mm did not affect the rate of division. At loiv experimental pH, C. elongata was nonmotile and grew in clumps; at higher pH values, it was motile and solitary. Coccoliths were not found covering C. elongata if calcite was soluble in the medium.  相似文献

The allotment of cell surface and the allotment of cell volume between two daughter cells were observed in unequal division of spermatocytes of the grasshopper, Acrida lata, caused by steep temperature gradient. In applying a temperature gradient through the cell division, coincidence in position between the provisional division plane indicated by the tongue of mitochondria, and the actually formed furrow, has been established (i) by markers attached to cell surface and (ii) by calculated volumes of cytoplasm on the two sides of the planes. On removing a temperature gradient while a cell is dividing, equality is regained as far as the volume of the incipient daughter cells are concerned but territories of the surface once allotted are strictly observed. Unequal division, therefore, involves two different meanings; allocation of the surface, and apportionment of the cytoplasm both of which are dependent upon the development of asters.  相似文献

When protonemata of Adiantum capillus-veneris L. which had been grown filamentously under continuous red light were transferred to continuous white light, the apical cell divided transversely twice, but the 3rd division was longitudinal. An intervening period of darkness lasting from 0 to 90 hr either between the 1st and the 2nd cell division or between the 2nd and the 3rd one did not affect the number of protonemata in which the 3rd cell division was longitudinal. The insertion of red light instead of darkness greatly decreased the percentage of 1st longitudinal divisions occurring at the 3rd division, and increased the number of transverse divisions. Fifty percent reduction of induction of 1st longitudinal division was caused by ca. 50 hr exposure to red light between 1st and 2nd division and by ca. 20 hr between 2nd and 3rd division, and total loss was induced by an exposure of ca. 100 hr or longer to red light in the former and by ca. 40 hr longer in the latter. Thus, by using an appropriate intervening dark period or exposure to red light, the orientation and timing of cell division could be controlled in apical cell of the fern protonemata.  相似文献

Time-lapse observations of filamentous fern gametophytes were used to evaluate whether the plane of cell division is referable to the plane of minimal surface area before and during the transition to two-dimensional growth. Cell dimensions of the apical cell were related to the length/width ratios associated with minimal area in the transverse plane vs. longitudinal plane, by modeling the apical cell as a hemisphere subtended by a cylinder. Our working hypothesis predicts that filamentous growth is perpetuated by an apical cell geometry that makes the transverse division plane the orientation of minimal surface area, whereas the transition to two-dimensional growth (longitudinal division of the apical cell) occurs once the longitudinal plane becomes the position of minimal surface area. The predictions of this hypothesis are fulfilled regardless of variations in light intensity and light quality, the presence of regulators of metabolism, or whether the experimental perturbation causes a corresponding selective inhibition of the transition to two-dimensional growth. Thus, the control of the plane of cell division in this system seems to depend on thermodynamic considerations of surface area. Furthermore, we favor the conclusion that the role of the genome in the transition to two-dimensional growth involves its influence on apical cell dimensions rather than the induction of specific genes for specific morphogenetic mRNAs.  相似文献

Miller , J. H. (Yale U., New Haven, Conn.) The effect of auxin and guanine on cell expansion and cell division in the gametophyte of the fern, Onoclea sensibilis. Amer. Jour. Bot. 48(9): 816–819. Illus. 1961.—Auxin and guanine promote cell expansion in 0. sensibilis gametophytes. The optimum concentration of auxin for total expansion is 10−-5 M, but the optimum for elongation is 10−-6 M. Above this concentration the cells expanded isodiametrically. Guanine is active at higher concentrations than auxin. Increasing concentrations of auxin progressively inhibit red light-induced cell division, while guanine has no effect on cell division. Neither kinetin nor adenine promotes cell expansion or cell division.  相似文献

在大白鼠上丘脑片深层部的中层或深层给电刺激、分别在径向对应的深层或中层,记录到诱发的突触后场电位.以100Hz、1秒的强直刺激首次在上丘的深层部引出了长时程突触增强(LTP).N-甲基-D-天冬氨酸(NMDA)受体的选择性拮抗剂2-氨基-5-磷酸戊酸盐(APV)对LTP的阻断效应表明,NMDA受体不仅对上丘深层部LTP的产生有作用.而且也与LTP的维持有关.突触后场电位的幅度受APV或兴奋性氨基酸受体的非选择性拮抗剂犬尿喹啉酸(KYNA)的作用而减小,受γ-氨基丁酸(GABA)A型受体的选择性拮抗剂荷包牡丹碱(Bicu)的作用而增加,表明谷氨酸能神经递质在上丘深层部的兴奋性突触传递中起着重要作用,并且这些突触传递也受到GABA能抑制性突触的调节.  相似文献

A single injection of 1.5 mg/kg of cycloheximide induces a complete disappearance of mitotic activity in rat intestinal crypts within 1.5–2 hr. No significant necrosis of crypt cells is observed even though this phenomenon is accompanied by a marked decrease in uptake of labeled precursors into protein and DNA. Mitoses reappear 6 hr after injection and recovery then follows a cyclic pattern over a period equivalent to one cell cycle, thereby reflecting at least a partial synchronization of cell division. Concurrent use of colchicine, an agent known to induce metaphase arrest, has demonstrated that cycloheximide, while having no apparent effect on cells already in division, prevents the entrance of new cells into visible mitosis. Analysis of the cell cycle suggests that one block initiated by cycloheximide occurs in G2, presumably as the result of an interference with the formation of protein(s) required for the normal progression of cells from this phase of the cycle into mitosis.  相似文献

1. The inhibition of oxygen consumption produced by a series of concentrations of ethyl carbamate has been measured in the protozoan Tetrahymena geleii. 2. The relation found between the narcotic concentration and its effect on respiration leads to the conclusion that urethane has two distinct modes of action in this cell. The respiratory data can be accurately predicted by assuming that the inhibitor acts on two independent parallel respiratory systems. 3. Complete suppression of cell division in this organism is brought about by approximately 0.1 M urethane. 4. Urethane concentrations up to 0.1 M affect primarily only one of the two postulated respiratory systems. The mechanism of the narcosis of cell division in this organism by urethane thus appears to be inhibition of this "activity" system.  相似文献

Vittaria graminifolia gametophytes reproduce asexually by linear six-celled propagules known as gemmae. It has been shown previously that asymmetric cell division and rhizoid elongation in gemmae are inhibited by millimolar concentrations of Ca+ +. The present paper shows that millimolar Ca+ + delays the onset of cell division at a point prior to mitosis, without affecting the maximal rate of cell division. Ca+ + is most effective in delaying cell division when it is present during the first 24 hours of culture, 2 or 3 days before the initiation of cell division. Millimolar Ca+ + inhibits rhizoid elongation by delaying its onset, while also reducing its maximal rate. Ca+ + is also most effective in delaying rhizoid elongation during the first 24 hours of culture. Culture of gemmae on Ethylglycol-bis-(aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N‘,N‘-tetraacetic acid-buffered media shows that the maximum frequency of cell division occurs at pCa 7, while for the initiation of rhizoid elongation, it occurs at pCa 5.  相似文献

我们以前的工作观察到纹状体边缘区内有密集的P物质纤维及终末分布,本用原位杂交和免疫组织化学方法研究了大鼠纹状体边缘区内P物质受体(SPR)的表达及分布,原位杂交结果发现P物质mRNA阳性杂交信号在纹状体内的分布不均匀,尾壳核内只有少量中等大小的阳性胞体,苍白球内只有少量较大的阳性胸体,而在尾壳核和苍白球之间的边缘区部位则可见许多中等大小的梭形阳性神经元胞体,并呈现密集的带关分布。免疫组织化学结果观察到P物质阳性神经元胞体在纹状体内的分布与原位杂交结果一致。推测大鼠纹体边缘区内可以合成P物质受体,具有接受和整合P物质神经递质的功能,推测边缘区内SPR神经元可能对SP递质的接受、调节有重要作用。  相似文献

Light is required for the germination of spores of Matteuccia struthiopteris. Histochemical studies show that dormant spores contain no starch, but have an abundance of storage protein granules. Starch accumulates in the numerous chloroplasts of the spore on exposure to light and becomes gradually more extensive. Protein granules disappear as germination progresses. Following this, the centrally located nucleus migrates toward the proximal spore face. Concomitant with the nuclear migration, an increase of cytoplasmic RNA surrounding the nucleus occurs. An equal nuclear division and unequal cell division give rise to a 2-celled gametophyte consisting of a large prothallial cell and smaller rhizoidal cell. A new peripheral wall forms around the entire protoplast at the time of nuclear migration, while a transverse wall forms after nuclear division. The rhizoid emerges through the split raphe along the proximal spore face; it is rich in cytoplasmic RNA but contains very few chloroplasts and little starch. Electron microscopy of the 2-celled stage revealed a greater concentration of mitochondria, Golgi bodies, and a more extensive endoplasmic reticulum in the rhizoid than was found in the prothallial cell, which, however, was far richer in chloroplasts and lipid bodies. As the rhizoid elongates and becomes more vacuolated, cytoplasmic RNA decreases as cytoplasmic protein increases. The rhizoid undergoes no cell divisions, while the prothallial cell retains the potential for further cell division. The possible significance of the distribution of storage products, cell organelles, and other cell components were considered in relation to the non-equational cell division and differentiation of the 2 cells.  相似文献

The eggs of Arbacia and starfish contained about 70 and 25 micrograms of pyruvate per gm. of dry cells respectively. Arbacia eggs utilized added pyruvate, although the O2 uptake did not increase. On fertilization the utilization of pyruvate increased sevenfold. This pyruvate seems to be metabolized, as in other cells, with diphosphothiamine as coenzyme. The diphosphothiamine content of fertilized and non-fertilized eggs was about 16 micrograms; that of sperm, 30 micrograms. Penetration of sperm into the egg and fertilization with cell division to the pluteus stage did not bring forth appearance of succino-dehydrogenase. The possible mechanism of fertilization and cell division is discussed.  相似文献
