Depsidone constituents from the quintaria group of Nephroma species

A new lichen depsidone was isolated, in the form of its triacetate derivative from the acetylated extracts of Nephroma antarcticum and has been demonstrated to be hypoconstictic acid-triacetate. Two related depsidones, hypostictic acid hyposalazinic acid, were isolated from N. australe.     

The triterpenoid acids of Schinus molle

From the acidic fraction of the oleoresin obtained from the berries of Schinus molle was isolated isomasticadienonic, isomasticadienonalic, masticadienonic and 3-epi-isomasticadienolic acids. In addition the new 3-epi-isomasticadienolalic acid was isolated. Both isomasticadienonalic and 3-epi-isomasticadienolalic acids had an aldehydic group attached to C-20. The absolute configuration of this centre was established. The PMR study of the isolated compounds, of their reduction products and O-acetyl derivatives is reported.     

Cis-4-hydroxypipecolic acid and 2,4-cis-4,5-trans-4,5-dihydroxypipecolic acid from Calliandra

cis-4-Hydroxypipecolic acid and 2,4-cis-4,5-trans-4,5-dihydroxypipecolic acid were isolated from leaves of Calliandra pittieri. A system for resolving the eight imino acids isolated from Calliandra is described.     

Triterpene acids from Salvia and Teucrium species

The pentacyclic triterpene acids ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, micromeric acid, maslinic acid and 3-epi-maslinic acid have been isolated from several Salvia and Teucrium species.     

Isolimonic acid,a new citrus limonoid

Isolimonic acid was isolated as its methyl ester from seeds of Citrus aurantium, C. reticulata and C. paradisi, and its structure was determined by ¹H and ¹³C NMR. The isomeric limonoid ichangin was also isolated from C. aurantium and C. paradisi.     

New β-orcinol depsidones from Xanthoparmelia quintaria and a Thelotrema species

A new depsidone isolated from a new species of Thelotrema was identified as hyopstictic acid. Xanthoparmelia quintaria contains hypostictic and hyposalazinic acids.     

Diterpene acids from Helianthus species and their microbiological conversion by Gibberella fujikuroi, mutant B1-41a

The diterpene acid content in 10 species of Helianthus has been investigated. Ent-12,16-cyclokauranoic acid, isolated from H. annuus, is converted into a series of 12,16-cyclogibberellins by cultures of Gibberella fujikuroi, mutant B1-41a, and 12,16-cyclogibberellins A₉, and A₁₂ have been isolated. Ent-12β-acetoxykaurenoic acid and ent-13(S)-angeloxyatisenoic acid have been isolated from H. decapetalus; the metabolism of ent-13(S)-hydroxyatisenoic acid and atisenoic acid by B1-41a is also described.     

Sesquiterpenoid metabolites from Stereum complicatum

A new sesquiterpene antibiotic, complicatic acid, isolated from cultures of Stereum complicatum (Fr.)Fr. has been shown to be dehydrohirsutic acid C. Hirsutic acid C was also isolated from the same fungus. [2-¹⁴C]-MVA was incorporated into both metabolites and complicatic acid has been shown to be formed from hirsutic acid C both in vivo and in vitro.     

Stereochemistry of 2-aminopimelic acid and related amino acids in three species of asplenium

We previously reported two free D-amino acids, D-2-aminopimelic acid (D-APA) and trans-3,4-dehydro-D-2-aminopimelic acid (D-Δ-APA), from Asplenium unilaterale. In the present work we isolated 4-hydroxy-2-aminopimelic acid (OH-APA) from the same plant and determined it to be the α-L-form. We also investigated the configurations of these amino acids isolated from A. prolongatum and A. wilfordii which are morphologically distinct from A. unilaterale. In A. prolongatum, APA was the D- and OH-APA was the L-isomer. In contrast, APA from A. wilfordii was partially racemized and the degree of racemization was significantly different in plant material collected in July and November, L:D = 3:2 and 3:7, respectively. In A. wilfordii OH-APA was almost pure L- and Δ-APA was mostly the D-isomer.     

Phytochemical study of Stachys candida Bory & Chaubard (Lamiaceae)

Phytochemical analysis of the aerial parts of Stachys candida Bory & Chaubard, growing wild in Greece led to the isolation of eleven bioactive secondary metabolites. Nine flavones, one of them methylated, one phenylethanoid glycoside and one phenolic acid were isolated from the methanol extract of this plant. The structure elucidation of the isolated compounds was achieved on the basis of NMR spectroscopy (1D and 2D spectra). The phytochemical profile was appeared to be similar with other Greek endemic Stachys species, while a strong difference was the absence of iridoids. Importantly, the chemotaxonomic significance of the isolated compounds has extensively been described.     

A herbicidal fatty acid produced by Lyngbya aestuarii

A herbicidal component isolated from ethanolic extracts of Lyngbya aestuarii was identified as 2,5-dimethyldodecanoic acid. It inhibited the growth of Lemna minor at concentrations higher than 200 ng/ml. Growth inhibition was strongly pH dependent.     

2,4-cis-4,5-cis-4,5-Dihyroxypipecolic acid—a naturally occurring imino acid from Calliandra pittieri

2,4-cis-4,5-cis-4,5-Dihydroxypipecolic acid has been isolated from the leaves of Calliandra pittieri. This is the third dihydroxypipecolic acid isomer isolated from Calliandra and the first report of this compound from a natural source.     

The absolute configuration of phaseic and dihydrophaseic acids

A sample of phaseic acid methyl ester (5 mg, isolated from tomato plants fed (±)-abscisic acid, was reduced to a mixture of the epimeric dihydrophaseates which were separated by TLC. The more polar epimer was identical with the dihydrophaseate isolated from beans by Walton et al. [14]. Comparison of the NMR and IR spectra (H-bonding) of the two epimers shows the secondary hydroxyl of the less polar epimer is cis to the oxymethylene group, which is cis to the tertiary hydroxyl group. The absolute configuration of this centre is known so the absolute configuration of phaseic acid can be deduced. Phaseic acid is (−)-3-methyl-5{8[1(R), 5(R)-dimethyl-8(S)-hydroxy-3-oxo-6-oxabicyclo-(3,2,1)-octane]} 2-cis-4-trans-pentadienoic acid and both it and the reduction products exist in chair conformations. The more polar epimer isolated by Walton et al. is (−)-3-methyl-5{8[3(S,8(S)-dihydroxy-1(R,5(R)-dimethyl-6-oxabicyclo-(3,2,1)-octane]}2-cis-4-trans-pentadienoic acid. It is suggested that the less polar epimer should be referred to as epi-dihydrophaseic acid.     

Erythro-γ-hydroxyhomo-L-arginine: An amino acid from seed of Lonchocarpus costaricensis, and its preferential interaction with borate

A new non-protein amino acid, erythro-γ-hydroxyhomo-L-arginine has been isolated from seed of Lonchocarpus costaricensis by exploiting its property of interacting with borate ions. For structural comparisons, threo-γ-hydroxyhomo-L-arginine was isolated from seed of Lathyrus tingitanus and erythro-γ-hydroxyarginine from Vicia unijuga by novel procedures. The reasons for the interaction of borate with the erythro- but not the threo-forms of these amino acids are discussed.     

2S,4R-carboxy-2-acetylamino-4-piperidine dans les feuilles de Calliandra haematocephala

A new naturally occurring pipecolic acid derivative has been isolated from leaves of the legume Calliandra haematocephala. Its structure was shown to be 2S,4R-carboxy-2-acetylamino-4-piperidine by chemical and spectrosopic methods.     

Capric acid: A growth inhibiting substance from dormant Iris hollandica bulbs

A growth inhibiting substance, detected by the Avena coleoptile straight growth test, was isolated from dormant iris bulbs and identified as capric     

2(S)-Aminohex-5-ynoic acid,an antimetabolite from Cortinarius claricolor var. Tenuipes

Screening for antimetabolites in edible mushrooms showed that the hot water extract of fruiting bodies of Cortinarius claricolor var. tenuipes strongly inhibited the growth of Bacillus subtilis B-50 in a chemically defined minimal medium. 2(S)-Aminohex-5-ynoic acid was isolated as an active compound.     

The structure and stereochemistry of barrigenic acid,a new triterpene acid sapogenin from Barringtonia acutangula

A new triterpene acid, barrigenic acid, was isolated from the fruits of Barringtonia acutangula. Its structure was established as 2α,3β,19β-trihydroxyolean-12-en-23,28-dioic acid.     

The biosynthesis of abscisic acid in Cercospora rosicola

1′-Deoxyabscisic acid (1′-deoxy-ABA) has been isolated from cultures of Cercospora rosicola which are actively synthesizing abscisic acid (ABA)     

Biologically active phenolics from Lilium longiflorum

The new phenolics, the trans-p-coumaroyl and the feruloyl esters of 2,3-dihydroxy-1,2-propanedicarboxylic acid and itaconic acid, were isolated from Lilium longiflorum; the cis-p-coumaroyl ester was also detected. The biological activities of the trans-p-coumaroyl ester are described.
