The difficulty of observing polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in the wild has prohibited the gathering of behavioral data necessary to develop a baseline set of milestones for monitoring cub development. This study describes and quantifies previously undocumented trends in behavior observed in a captive cub–information that will be useful both in future comparative studies and in the implementation of husbandry improvements. Nearly 400 hr of behavioral data were collected, 100 hr of which were video recordings from the maternity den during the first 3 months of life. Den videos were scored to determine activity budgets and levels of maternal contact. For the remainder of the first year, mother and cub were observed in the outdoor enclosure. The onset and relative frequency of 40 discrete cub behaviors were tracked, as were patterns of mother–cub contact, including nursing and weaning. This study revealed that environmental conditions, habitat enrichment, and conditioning procedures influenced the patterns of developmental behavior exhibited by a polar bear cub. Both climatic and developmental factors had significant effects on the time the bears spent swimming. Management practices, such as environmental enrichment, and a conditioning procedure involving separation of mother and cub caused transient changes in several tracked behaviors. As the cub aged, the longest time between consecutive maternal contacts increased. Nursing bouts recorded per hour of observation decreased, and the duration of individual nursing bouts and pre‐nurse begging periods increased. ABSTRACT

A sonagraphic analysis of the structure of fox vocalisations, based on 512 adult and 73 cub vocalisations obtained from archive recordings, was combined with field data on the vocal behaviour of an urban fox population. Calls were described quantitatively by six variables: duration, lowest and second lowest frequency bands (from sonagrams), highest and second highest peak frequencies (from power spectra) and the number of components. They were separated into 20 call types, eight of which were cub vocalisations. Call types were used singly or in combination, and some gradation between particular call types was apparent. Hypotheses regarding call function were generated based on the matching of acoustic properties with their seasonal occurrence and the socioecological pressures acting on foxes at different times of the year. Calls that were structurally suited to agonistic and contact functions were found to be significantly more common during the winter, the time of mating and dispersal, when foxes move over greater areas.  相似文献

Against a background of poor breeding success and cub survival in captive cheetahs, a knowledge of the early maternal behavior in the wild may yield useful information for comparison with the captive situation. This paper documents the types of lair sites used by mothers to conceal their newborn cubs in the wild situation, and details patterns of maternal behavior observed during this period. Four kinds of lairs were used by cheetah mothers, and the amount of protection from the elements and predators was assessed for each. Lair type appeared to have little effect on cub survival. Cubs were concealed in lairs for 8.2 weeks on average, although larger litters tended to leave lairs earlier. During this period, cubs were moved to new lairs approximately every 5.6 days. Cubs were left for an average of 9.6 hours while their mothers went hunting, but mothers virtually always returned to them around nightfall, even if they failed to catch any prey. Maternal neglect and cub abandonment, which account for many cub deaths in captivity, are abnormal in the wild, except when prey is very scarce. Improved husbandry techniques, such as the provision of multiple, secluded nest boxes, and remote monitoring conditions should promote breeding success in captivity. In addition, noise and human disturbance should be minimized.  相似文献

The arctic fox Alopex lagopus L population in Sweden is small and its numbers fluctuate widely with food availability, l e rodent populations This fluctuation is mediated through differences in recruitment rates between years The recruitment can be divided into three phases number of litters born, number of cubs per litter and cub survival rates The number of litters and their sizes have been shown to depend on food availability during winter and spring To examine cub survival during the summer and how it relates to food availability, we conducted a feeding experiment m northern Sweden during 1990, a year of low rodent density, involving six occupied arctic fox dens Feeding at dens lowered cub mortality rates However, condition and growth rates of juveniles were not influenced by supplementary feeding at dens, nor were they related to the probability of survival for an individual Thus arctic foxes seem to minimize risks rather than maximize growth The juvenile mortality from weaning and over the next 6 wk was 21%, mostly due to starvation Only 82% survived from weaning to the first breeding season Of the one-year-old foxes, 50% survived their second year Supplementary feeding of juveniles had no effect on the final survival rates over these two years However, the immediate, positive effect on cub survival could be used in a long-term, extensive management programme if combined with winter feeding  相似文献

Arboreal primates use loud vocalisations to transmit information in densely vegetated habitats. These vocalisations are likely to show adaptations to increase their propagation and to transmit information. Golden-backed uakaris, Cacajao melanocephalus, emit a loud vocalization termed the “tchó” call, which seems to function as a contact call and encodes information on the individual signaler and behavioural context. Because the call is often used for communication over relatively large distances, we were interested in its propagation in the wild. The aim of the present study was to investigate the degradation patterns of the tchó call in the flooded igapó forest. We examined via playback experiments how the acoustic parameters of this call changed with increasing distance from the playback speaker. We broadcast 12 tchó calls and rerecorded them along a transect at distances of 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160?m from the speaker in two igapó forest patches in Jaú National Park, Amazonas, Brazil. At 160?m from the speaker, the tchó call degraded in both patches and was barely recordable. Up to a distance of 80?m, the bandwidth and number of harmonics in the call decreased with increasing distance, while the lowest frequency increased. The highest frequency (HF) did not gradually decrease with increasing distance. However, when we compared the HF at distances of 10 and 80?m, we could see a clear decrease in this parameter. Call duration increased compared with the broadcast signal up to 40?m because of reverberation, but decreased at 80?m as the weaker echoes of the call attenuated. These changes may reveal information about the signaler’s distance during signal transmission. The frequency of maximum energy (FME) of the tchó call decreased significantly when comparing recordings made at 10 and 80?m. Nevertheless, it did not show a consistent and gradual decrease with increasing rerecording distance (at least up to 80?m). FME remained relatively stable (±50?Hz on average, at least up to 80?m) when compared to the other call parameters, suggesting that the tchó call may be adapted to transmit information with some efficiency throughout the igapó forest.

Nursing behaviors of the captive md pandas were quantitatively studied by focal sampling methods in Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding from Jldy to August, 2000. The results indicated that frequencies of activity and rest were low in the first three days after birth, and became higher as time went by. The frequency of licking cub was higher in the first day after birth and deserting cub was only observed in the seventh day. Frequencies of some behaviors, such as rest, licking cub, cherishing cub, sniffing cub, returning to shed and deserting cub, differed sioaificantly in different phases of the first month after birth. Frequencies of licking cub, cherishing cub, sniffing cub and returning to shed were significantly higher in the pre-nursing period than in the midnursing and post-nursing periods. However, frequencies of rest and deserting cub were sioaificantly higher in the post-nursing period than in the per-nursing and mid-nursing periods. The degree of maternal behaviors can be inferred from degree that the mother exposes her babies to the envim~unent and the time that the mother leaves her shed.  相似文献

In the lesser spear-nosed bat, Phyllostomus discolor, maternal directive calls are characterized by an individual type of sinusoidal frequency modulation (= SFM) pattern. Beside modulation frequency, modulation depth, carrier frequency, and number of modulation cycles per call contribute to the mother's vocal signature. Since juvenile P. discolor learn to adapt their isolation calls to the corresponding call characteristics of the own mother or even to playback of a computer-stored directive call, if hand-reared in the absence of conspecifics, the bats' auditory system ought to be able to resolve interindividual differences in communication call structure. However, quantitative psychoacoustic data on the discrimination of SFM signals in this species are not available. Thus, in the present study, lesser spear-nosed bats were trained in a two-alternative forced-choice procedure to discriminate between two alternatingly presented SFM sound signals differing in modulation frequency. Other characteristics of acoustic stimuli were identical and designed to mimick the fundamental of species-specific calls. By gradually reducing the difference in modulation frequency between both stimuli within the behavioural relevant range until the animals' performance dropped below the 75%-correct level, a considerable auditory spectro-temporal resolution has been revealed. Particularly in comparison to the overall interindividual variation of this call parameter (minimal modulation frequency = 49 Hz, maximum = 100 Hz), the determined average difference limen for modulation frequency of 2.42 ± 0.29 Hz seems substantial and sufficient for labelling individuals. Variations of breeding success with age have been studied largely in iteroparous species and particularly in birds: survival of offspring increases with parental age until senescence. Nevertheless, these results are from observations of free-living individuals and therefore, it remains impossible to determine whether these variations result from parental investment or efficiency or both, and whether these variations occur during the prenatal or the postnatal stage or during both. Our study aimed first, to determine whether age had an impact on the expression of maternal breeding care by comparing inexperienced female birds of two different ages, and second, to define how these potential differences impact chicks' growth and behavioural development. We made 22 2-month-old and 22 8-month-old female Japanese quail foster 1-day-old chicks. We observed their maternal behaviour until the chicks were 11 days old and then tested these chicks after separation from their mothers. Several behavioural tests estimated their fearfulness and their sociality. We observed first that a longer induction was required for young females to express maternal behaviour. Subsequently as many young females as elder females expressed maternal behaviour, but young females warmed chicks less, expressed less covering postures and rejected their chicks more. Chicks brooded by elder females presented higher growth rates and more fearfulness and sociality. Our results reveal that maternal investment increased with age independently of maternal experience, suggesting modification of hormone levels implied in maternal behaviour. Isolated effects of maternal experience should now be assessed in females of the same age. In addition, our results show, for first time in birds, that variations in maternal care directly induce important differences in the behavioural development of chicks. Finally, our results confirm that Japanese quail remains a great laboratory model of avian maternal behaviour and that the way we sample maternal behaviour is highly productive.  相似文献

We developed a method to facilitate maternal care in a giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) female that rejected her cub immediately after parturition. After removal of the cub, the female was systematically exposed to a regime of infant‐related stimuli, including a surrogate toy panda, accompanied by infant vocalizations and urine, and the mother's own milk. The female displayed several measures of maternal behavior toward the surrogate, for example, spending 61% of her time holding the surrogate in positions typical for the species. There was some evidence that maternal proficiency increased across the 4 weeks of the experiment. Results also indicate that the female was responsive to both infant vocalizations and urine, but not milk. After a transitional period in which we assisted the female in her efforts to nurse and groom the infant, all maternal care‐giving responsibilities were returned to the mother. Over the next 3 months, the pattern of maternal care followed the species‐typical course of declining mother‐infant contact, grooming, overall interaction time, and responsiveness to the cub's vocalizations. This study marks the first successful reunification of a giant panda mother with an infant separated at birth and, it is hoped, will serve as a model for similar efforts elsewhere. One proposed mechanism of speciation is divergent sexual selection, whereby divergence in female preferences and male signals results in behavioural isolation. Despite the appeal of this hypothesis, evidence for it remains inconclusive. Here, we present several lines of evidence that sexual selection is driving behavioural isolation and speciation among populations of an Amazonian frog (Physalaemus petersi). First, sexual selection has promoted divergence in male mating calls and female preferences for calls between neighbouring populations, resulting in strong behavioural isolation. Second, phylogenetic analysis indicates that populations have become fixed for alternative call types several times throughout the species' range, and coalescent analysis rejects genetic drift as a cause for this pattern, suggesting that this divergence is due to selection. Finally, gene flow estimated with microsatellite loci is an average of 30 times lower between populations with different call types than between populations separated by a similar geographical distance with the same call type, demonstrating genetic divergence and incipient speciation. Taken together, these data provide strong evidence that sexual selection is driving behavioural isolation and speciation, supporting sexual selection as a cause for speciation in the wild.  相似文献

Using cub growth as an index, I examine the influence of maternalnutrition, litter size, and cub sex on maternal care in cheetahs(Acinonyx jubatus) and compare cub and litter growth rates withthose of other large feilds. Seventy-nine free-living cheetahcubs in 21 litters from 15 mothers were weighed at least oncebetween 6 and 48 days of age. Eleven litters were weighed atthe beginning and end of a 5-day observation of their mothers. The mean cub growth rate varied significantly between litters, due primarily to differences in maternal food intake. Growthdeclined sharply when maternal food intake was less than 1.5kg/ day, but did not increase with greater levels of food intake.Lower limits of growth rates may therefore have been set bythe mother's food intake, whereas upper limits may be set bythe intrinsic physiological ability of cubs to grow. Althoughmale cubs were heavier than female cubs in the same litter whenfirst weighed, major differences in growth rate between thesexes were not apparent at this stage. Both cheetah cubs andlitters grow fast relative to other large felids, and I arguethat this may be an adaptation to the high rate of cheetah juvenilemortality from predation.  相似文献

Abstract

We conducted acoustic and behavioural observations on wild New Zealand North Island kaka (Nestor meridionalis septentrionalis) to assess the behavioural context of their most common calls. We distinguished several call types by ear in the field and then quantitatively evaluated our call type classifications using spectrographic analyses. Next, we established the behavioural context of each call type during 500 h of field observations. We observed five distinctive call types that were clearly segregated in subsequent spectrographic analyses. Behavioural observations showed that each call type was generally associated with particular behaviours used by birds separated by different distances. Some call types were used by distantly‐separated solitary birds that were foraging or preening, while others were used mostly during copulation. Overall results indicate that kaka have a range of distinctive call‐types for communication under different spatial and social circumstances.  相似文献

When mammalian social groups exceed their optimal size, they often tend to split. In view of the potential evolutionary benefits, it should be more advantageous for animals to stay with kin, rather than nonkin, during such fission events. In the present study, the spontaneous fission of two social groups, R and S, of rhesus macaques living on Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico, provided the opportunity to compare the kinship structure of the corresponding parent and daughter groups, using information on both maternal and paternal relatedness. In both instances, maternal half-siblings and pairs of animals from the same family were significantly more prevalent in the fission products than in the parent group. During the split of group R, significantly more paternal half-siblings stayed in the remnants of the parent group than joined the seceding group. Our findings are compatible with previous behavioural studies demonstrating that female primates bias their social behaviour more to maternal than to paternal kin, but that both types of half-siblings prefer each other more than unrelated animals. It remains to be clarified by future research, however, whether the observed co-segregation of paternal half-sibs in our study reflects active choice or is a by-product of the group-specific kin structures, prior to fission.  相似文献

Reproductive seasonality was examined in an equatorial population of free-living spotted hyaenas (Crocuta crocuta) in Kenya. The study population was observed continuously for 10 years, during which time the dates of all births, conceptions, weanings, and cub deaths were recorded. Local prey abundance was estimated two to four times per month, and rainfall was recorded daily throughout the study period. Births occurred during every month of the year, but a distinct trough in births occurred from February to May. This trough occurred approximately one gestation period after the phase of the annual cycle during which prey animals were least abundant in the home range of the hyaenas, and conceptions occurred most frequently when food abundance was greatest. Neither rainfall nor cub mortality were correlated with births or conceptions. Thus, although spotted hyaenas are capable of breeding throughout the year, they exhibit a moderate degree of seasonality that most likely reflects responses to seasonal variation in energy availability.  相似文献

We studied the effects of primiparity on litter size, offspring size, and cub loss in brown bears (Ursus arctos) in two study areas (north, south) in Sweden from 1987 to 2006. Sexually selected infanticide (SSI) has been suggested previously as a mortality factor in our study populations. Females in the south became primiparous earlier than females in the north. Primiparous females had significantly smaller litters of cubs than multiparous females. We found no evidence that primiparity was costly in terms of the interlitter interval. Primiparous mothers had a higher probability of cub loss than multiparous mothers. The probability of cub loss was analyzed separately for the pre-mating and the mating season. The probability of cub loss by primiparous females in the pre-mating season increased with both increasing population density and deteriorating food conditions, whereas the probability of cub loss during the mating season decreased with increasing age of primiparity and increased with male turnover (a variable predicting SSI). The temporal patterns of cub loss by primiparous females suggested that the critical times for reproductive success by primiparous females were the pre-mating season (from birth to shortly after leaving the den) and the mating season. Cub loss in these periods was independent and caused by different factors. Cub loss before the mating season seemed to be most influenced by food conditions, whereas that during the mating season appeared to be caused by SSI.  相似文献

Maintaining a good cub-rearing relationship is of great significance for the healthy development of newborn giant panda cubs. Oxytocin plays a key role in this cub-rearing relationship development during the breeding period. To investigate the relationship between oxytocin levels and maternal behavior, we sampled the maternal behavior of 6 adult female giant pandas (3 in lactation group, 3 in non-lactation group) at Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding from June to September 2019 by using the focal sampling method, and tested the urine oxytocin level of each individuals by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The results showed that the oxytocin levels were significantly higher in the lactation group (278. 86 pg/mg ±44. 42 pg/mg) than in the non-lactation group. For the two types of breastfeeding groups, the level of oxytocin in the multiparous female pandas (185. 64 pg/mg ±44. 61 pg/mg) was significantly lower than that in the primiparous female pandas (465. 30 pg/mg ±82. 39 pg/mg). Compared with the primiparous female pandas, the multiparous female pandas had more embracing cub behavior (77. 45% ±1. 24%) and feeding behavior (15. 22% ±1. 62%), but less licking cub (14. 26% ±0. 91%) and position adjustment behavior (1. 69% ±0. 29%). Finally, we found the licking cub behavior was significantly positively correlated with the oxytocin level in the lactation group, and the embracing cub behavior was significantly negatively correlated with the oxytocin level in the lactation group. The results indicate that primiparous female pandas show more maternal behavior, less individual behavior and higher oxytocin levels. The results of this study suggest that the different reactions of oxytocin in the two types of giant panda females may help to improve the refined and differentiated breeding techniques for captive giant pandas in the future.  相似文献

We examined the genetic structure of natural populations of the European wood mouse Apodemus sylvaticus at the microgeographic (<3 km) and macrogeographic (>30 km) scales. Ecological and behavioural studies indicate that this species exhibits considerable dispersal relative to its home-range size. Thus, there is potential for high gene flow over larger geographic areas. As levels of population genetic structure are related to gene flow, we hypothesized that population genetic structuring at the microgeographic level should be negligible, increasing only with geographic distance. To test this, four sites were sampled within a microgeographic scale with two additional samples at the macrogeographic level. Individuals ( n =415) were screened and analysed for seven polymorphic microsatellite loci. Contrary to our hypothesis, significant levels of population structuring were detected at both scales. Comparing genetic differentiation with geographic distance suggests increasing genetic isolation with distance. However, this distance effect was non-significant being confounded by surprisingly high levels of differentiation among microgeographic samples. We attribute this pattern of genetic differentiation to the effect of habitat fragmentation, splitting large populations into components with small effective population sizes resulting in enhanced genetic drift. Our results indicate that it is incorrect to assume genetic homogeneity among populations even where there is no evidence of physical barriers and dispersal can occur freely. In the case of A. sylvaticus , it is not clear whether dispersal does not occur across habitat barriers or behavioural dispersal occurs without consequent gene flow.  相似文献

In order to estimate the isonymy structure of Spain, we studied surname distribution in 283 Spanish towns based on 3.625 million telephone users selected from 6.328 million users, downloaded from a commercial CD-ROM which contains all 13 million users in the country. Since in Spain the surname is made by the paternal and the maternal surname, it was possible to classify surnames according to parental origin. Two matrices of isonymy distances, one for paternal and one for maternal surnames, were constructed and tested for correlation with geographic distance. For the whole of Spain, Euclidean distance was significantly but weakly correlated with geographic distance both for paternal and maternal surnames, with r = 0.205 +/- 0.013 and r = 0.263 +/- 0.012, respectively. Two dendrograms of the 283 sampled towns were built from the two matrices of Euclidean distance. They are largely colinear. Four main clusters identified by the dendrograms are correlated with geography. Given the surname structure of Spain, we were able to calculate from isonymy and for each town 1). total or expressed inbreeding, 2). random or expected inbreeding, and 3). local inbreeding. Total inbreeding, F(IT), was highest in the North Atlantic regions and lowest along the Mediterranean Coast. The lowest levels were found in Andalusia, Catalunyia, Valencia, and Navarra. Random inbreeding, F(ST), had a similar geographical pattern. Local inbreeding, F(IS), was relatively uniform in the whole of Spain. In towns, random inbreeding dominates over local inbreeding. From the analysis, it emerges that the northwestern area of Spain is the most inbred.  相似文献

Behavioural isolation from divergence in male advertisement calls and female preferences is hypothesized to cause genetic divergence and speciation in the Amazonian frogs Physalaemus petersi and P. freibergi, yet the importance of call variation and landscape features in genetic divergence is unresolved. We tested for correlations between genetic divergence at microsatellite loci and (1) call variables; and (2) landscape variables among 10 populations of these frogs. Genetic divergence was not correlated with geographical distance, rivers or elevation. There was a strong positive relationship, however, between genetic divergence and inter‐population differences in one call variable, whine dominant frequency. Effective population sizes varied among sites (range = 15–846) and were often small, suggesting that genetic drift could influence call evolution. Evidence for fine‐scale genetic structure within sites was also found. Our results support the hypothesis that behavioural isolation from divergence in male calls and female preferences causes genetic divergence and speciation.  相似文献
