Conservation and restoration efforts are often hindered by a lack of historical baselines that pre-date intense anthropogenic environmental change. In this paper I document that natural accumulations of skeletal remains represent a potential source of high-quality data on the historical composition and structure of small-mammal communities. I do so by assessing the fidelity of modern, decadal and centennial-scale time-averaged samples of skeletal remains (concentrated by raptor predation) to the living small-mammal communities from which they are derived. To test the power of skeletal remains to reveal baseline shifts, I employ the design of a natural experiment, comparing two taphonomically similar Great Basin cave localities in areas where anthropogenic land-use practices have diverged within the last century. I find relative stasis at the undisturbed site, but document rapid restructuring of the small-mammal community at the site subjected to recent disturbance. I independently validate this result using historical trapping records to show that dead remains accurately capture both the magnitude and direction of this baseline shift. Surveys of skeletal remains therefore provide a simple, powerful and rapid alternative approach for gaining insight into the historical structure and dynamics of modern small-mammal communities.  相似文献

Comparing the magnitude of the current biodiversity crisis with those in the fossil record is difficult without an understanding of differential preservation. Integrating data from palaeontological databases with information on IUCN status, ecology and life history characteristics of contemporary mammals, we demonstrate that only a small and biased fraction of threatened species (< 9%) have a fossil record, compared with 20% of non‐threatened species. We find strong taphonomic biases related to body size and geographic range. Modern species with a fossil record tend to be large and widespread and were described in the 19th century. The expected magnitude of the current extinction based only on species with a fossil record is about half of that of one based on all modern species; values for genera are similar. The record of ancient extinctions may be similarly biased, with many species having originated and gone extinct without leaving a tangible record.  相似文献

Abstract

Carnivores are the main biological agents identified in the Upper Pleistocene assemblage of Cova del Coll Verdaguer (NE Iberian Peninsula). At the site, ungulate bones were primarily accumulated and modified by hyenas, as shown by partly digested bones, coprolites and the pattern of damage on bones. However, other small- to medium-sized carnivores seemed to be involved in the accumulation, owing primarily to the presence of their bones and coprolites. Finally, other carnivores, including the brown bear, used the cave to hibernate and for birthing cubs. The combination of zooarchaeological and taphonomic studies, together with previous coprogenic analyses, at the site indicates that it is only by using these combined approaches that it is possible to identify the majority of the agents involved in an accumulation.  相似文献

The preservation of echinoid fragments of the common echinoid genus Clypeaster recovered from bulk sediment samples is used to explore the possibilities of recognizing taphonomic patterns and establishing taphofacies within a shallow water carbonate environment (Northern Bay of Safaga, Red Sea, Egypt). This is accomplished by the comparison and quantification of the taphonomic signatures of numerous fragments of roughly similar size. The main taphonomic processes observed are abrasion and destruction of plate surfaces, including tubercles and plate edges. Encrustation, especially by foraminifera, can be common and intense. Intraplate fracturing and surface features, such as scratch marks, were also quantified. Four different taphofacies with different characteristic signatures were separated using a cluster analysis of cumulative taphonomic grades. The distribution of taphofacies clearly reflects the topographic complexity of the study area and can be explained by ambient environmental parameters that reflect the general picture of wave and current intensities and sedimentation patterns. The potential use of taphofacies analysis as an independent measure of environmental heterogeneity in palaeoecological studies is confirmed in that taphofacies analysis can reveal parameters not immediately obvious when investigating the textural and biotic characteristics of a sediment.  相似文献

Ecosystems today are under growing pressure, with human domination at many scales. It is difficult, however, to gauge what has changed or been lost – and why – in the absence of data from periods before human activities. Actualistic taphonomic studies, originally motivated to understand preservational controls on deep‐time fossil records, are now providing insights into modern death assemblages as historical archives of present‐day ecosystems, turning taphonomy on its head. This article reviews the past 20 years of work on the temporal resolution and ability of time‐averaged skeletal assemblages to capture ecological information faithfully, focusing primarily on molluscs from soft‐sediment seafloors. Two promising arenas for ‘applied taphonomy’ are then highlighted: (1) using live‐dead mismatch – that is, observed discordance in the diversity, species composition, and distribution of living animals and co‐occurring skeletal remains – to recognize recent anthropogenic change, and (2) using time‐averaged death assemblages as windows into regional diversity and long‐term baselines, as a supplement or substitute for conventional live‐collected data. Meta‐analysis and modelling find that, in unaltered habitats, live‐dead differences in community‐level attributes can be generated largely or entirely by time‐averaging of natural spatial and temporal variability in living assemblages, on time frames consistent with the range of shell ages observed in death assemblages. Time‐averaging coarsens the temporal and spatial resolution of biological information in predictable ways; by comparison, taphonomic bias of information arising from differential preservation, production and transport of shells is surprisingly modest. Several challenges remain for basic taphonomic research, such as empirical and analytical methods of refining the temporal resolution of death assemblages; assessing the fate of resolution and fidelity with progressive burial; and expanding our understanding of the dynamics of skeletal accumulation in other groups and settings. Rather than shunning human‐impacted areas as inappropriate analogues of the deep past, we should capitalize on them to explore the fundamental controls on skeletal accumulation and to develop robust protocols for bringing time‐averaged death assemblages into the toolkits of conservation biology and environmental management.  相似文献

Like many other important evolutionary transitions, our knowledge of the origin of vertebrates is limited to windows of exceptional preservation of soft‐bodied fossils. Unfortunately, these fossils are rare and have been subjected to complex taphonomic filters including decay, collapse and distortion. To maximize our ability to utilize these crucial fossils to reconstruct the timing and sequence of evolutionary events, we are in the need of a robust taphonomic framework with in which to interpret them. Here, we report the results of a series of experiments designed to examine patterns of transformation and loss during decay of important anatomical characters of chordates and primitive vertebrates (ammocoete, adult lamprey, hagfish, juvenile chondrichthyans and a non‐vertebrate chordate, Branchiostoma). Complex and repeated patterns of transformation during decay are identified and figured for informative character complexes including eyes, feeding apparatus, skull and brain, muscles, branchial apparatus, axial structures, viscera, heart and fins. The resulting data regarding character decay and relative loss serve as a guide to recognition and interpretation of the anatomy of non‐biomineralized fossil vertebrates. The methods and techniques outlined are eminently applicable to other soft‐bodied groups and present a new way to interpret the exceptionally preserved fossil record.  相似文献

Field and flume experiments with modern Nautilus pompilius establish two prerequisites to recognize in situ preservation of fossil cephalopod shells (soft parts were within body chamber in situ at the time of fossilization): occurrence of the upper jaw within the body chamber and the position of jaws within the body chamber. Morphology of shells and jaws in modern and fossil nautiloids is so similar that these prerequisites can be applied for fossil nautiloids and provide implications for ammonoids. The upper jaws of Nautilus start to move at a water velocity of > 0.2 m/s, when the shells are reoriented with the aperture downstream; jaws are therefore unlikely to be secondarily deposited near the shell aperture by bottom currents. The lower jaws, moved at the velocity of > 0.1 m/s, can be deposited around the shell aperture by weak current (0.1–0.2 m/s in velocity), but never enter the inside of body chamber. Neither jaw is likely to be separately and selectively displaced from the inside of the body chamber through scavenging of the soft parts by burrowing infaunal animals. An upper jaw preserved inside the body chamber, together with a lower jaw, is thus a reliable indicator of in situ preservation; a sole lower jaw preserved around the shell aperture is likely to be secondarily deposited. Sedimentary structures inferring rapid burial events and jaw size are useful as additional evidence. Smaller jaws were more likely to be displaced from the body chamber by scavenging by infaunal animals after in situ burial, so that smaller jaws preserved within the body chamber suggest less scavenging. These findings are crucial to interpreting the taphonomic history and palaeo-ecology of fossil cephalopods.  相似文献

为弥补传统形态分类方法的不足,探究应用DNA条形码技术进行分子生物学鉴定的可行性,本研究用DNA条形码技术检测了青海省海东地区3目6科14属18种110只小型兽类的COI基因部分序列。分析所测COI基因序列可知:种内遗传距离≤3%,种间遗传距离5-10%,属间遗传距离12-19%,种间遗传距离显著大于种内遗传距离。NJ树显示同种个体聚为有很高支持度的单一分支。有6个个体(4只黄胸鼠、2只小家鼠)在现场鉴定中被误定为其他种类。研究结果表明使用条形码技术能纠正形态学鉴定中的错误,也说明动物线粒体COI基因是一个有效的DNA条形码标准基因。  相似文献

1. We studied temporal variation in the structure of flea communities on small mammalian hosts from eastern Slovakia using null models. We asked (a) whether flea co-occurrences in infracommunities (in the individual hosts) in different hosts as well as in the component communities (in the host species) demonstrate a non-random pattern; (b) whether this pattern is indicative of either positive or negative flea species interactions; (c) whether this pattern varies temporally; and (d) whether the expression of this pattern is related to population size of either fleas or hosts or both. 2. We constructed a presence/absence matrix of flea species for each temporal sample of a host species and calculated four metrics of co-occurrence, namely the C-score, the number of checkerboard species pairs, the number of species combinations and the variance ratio (V-ratio). Then we compared these metrics with the respective indices calculated for 5000 null matrices that were assembled randomly using two algorithms, namely fixed-fixed (FF) and fixed-equiprobable (FE). 3. Most co-occurrence metrics calculated for real data did not differ significantly from the metrics calculated for simulated matrices using the FF algorithm. However, the indices observed for 42 of 75 presence/absence matrices differed significantly from the null expectations for the FE models. Non-randomness was detected mainly by the C-score and V-ratio metrics. In all cases, the direction of non-randomness was the same, namely the aggregation, not competition, of flea species in host individuals and host species. 4. The inclusion or exclusion of the uninfested hosts in the FE models did not affect the results for individual host species. However, exclusion of the uninfested host species led to the acceptance of the null hypothesis for only six of 13 temporal samples of the component flea communities for which non-randomness was detected when the uninfested hosts were included in the analysis. 5. In most host species, the absolute values of the standardized size effect of both the C-score and V-ratio increased with an increase in host density and a concomitant decrease in flea abundance and prevalence. 6. Results of this study demonstrated that (a) flea assemblages on small mammalian hosts were structured at some times, whereas they appeared to be randomly assembled at other times; (b) whenever non-randomness of flea co-occurrences was detected, it suggested aggregation but never segregation of flea species in host individuals or populations; and (c) the expression of structure in flea assemblages depended on the level of density of both fleas and hosts.  相似文献

Ehrlichia -specific DNA fragments of Ehrlichia omp-1 and groEL genes were found in two I. granulatus ticks which had been collected from wild small mammals in a subtropical zone in Japan. The DNA sequences of groEL and 16SrDNA of the suspected Ehrlichia were clustered into a group of E. chaffeensis , E. muris , and Ehrlichia sp. HF565 found in I. ovatus, but were distinctly different. Therefore the Ehrlichia strain was designated as a novel Ehrlichia sp. 360. The Ehrlichia sp. 360 was detected in I. granulatus but not in any other ticks. This suggests that I. granulatus is a probable vector of Ehrlichia sp. 360 in Japan.  相似文献

Species richness and diversity of rodents and insectivores were investigated at relict forest patches of Mukogodo, Laikipia, Kenya using Sherman's live traps and pitfall traps. Two hundred and nineteen individuals were captured in 3021 trap‐nights. There were eleven species in two taxonomic groups, Rodentia and Insectivora. Two other rodent species were sighted but not captured. Thirteen bats belonging to four species (Epomophorous wahlbergi, Pipistrellus kuhlii, Scotophilus dingani and Nycteris thebaica) were opportunistically trapped using mist nets. Two of the four species accumulation curves for forest patches did not reach an asymptote. Species richness and diversity were highest at Kurikuri compared with other patches because of habitat variability. The results support the prediction that forest disturbance and degradation lead to an increase in generalist species as compared with specialists and highlight the importance of relict afromontane forests in the conservation of small mammals in Kenya.  相似文献

Swaziland is a small, topographically diverse southern Africa country whose mammalian fauna has been poorly studied. The distributions of small mammals in Swaziland were surveyed at 39 localities. A total of 15 species of rodents and ten species of insectivores were captured during the survey. The number of species of insectivore captured at a locality was positively correlated with mean annual rainfall, while the number of rodent species captured was negatively correlated with altitude. The number of rodent species captured was lower on Swazi Nation Land compared with privately owned land or protected land (reserves). This was probably due to the radical habitat alteration that had taken place on Swazi Nation Land, inter alia overgrazing by livestock, cultivation of maize and deforestation. The effect of this habitat alteration on the number of rodent species was more pronounced in high-lying areas of Swaziland. This may have been due to the fact that a large number of the rodent species inhabiting high-lying areas require thick, tall grassland habitats, whereas many of the low-lying species prefer more open habitats with less grass cover. Since grazing acts to reduce grass cover, it is suggested that the species inhabiting high-lying areas would be more affected by overgrazing, than low-lying species.  相似文献

Population density, biomass and composition of a small mammal community in an Acacia nigrescens savanna were studied over 12 months from August 2000. The community consisted of Mus minutoides (A. Smith 1834), Mastomys natalensis (A. Smith 1834), Lemniscomys rosalia (Thomas 1904), Crocidura hirta (Peters 1952), Steatomys pratensis (Peters 1846); and on one occasion, Graphiurus murinus (Desmarest 1822) was caught. M. minutoides was the dominant species in the site. Species richness was found to vary significantly with the time of the year. The density of M. minutoides was significantly high in winter and low in the other seasons, the ratio of males to females was found to be equal, and pregnant females were caught from November to May. The biomass of small mammals in the area (also density and numbers) was generally low (mean biomass 212 g ha?1). The occurrence of new individuals in catches remained high throughout the study, suggesting a high mortality or emigration rate or a combination of the two.  相似文献

The timing and sequence of events underlying the origin and early evolution of vertebrates remains poorly understood. The palaeontological evidence should shed light on these issues, but difficulties in interpretation of the non-biomineralized fossil record make this problematic. Here we present an experimental analysis of decay of vertebrate characters based on the extant jawless vertebrates (Lampetra and Myxine). This provides a framework for the interpretation of the anatomy of soft-bodied fossil vertebrates and putative cyclostomes, and a context for reading the fossil record of non-biomineralized vertebrate characters. Decay results in transformation and non-random loss of characters. In both lamprey and hagfish, different types of cartilage decay at different rates, resulting in taphonomic bias towards loss of 'soft' cartilages containing vertebrate-specific Col2α1 extracellular matrix proteins; phylogenetically informative soft-tissue characters decay before more plesiomorphic characters. As such, synapomorphic decay bias, previously recognized in early chordates, is more pervasive, and needs to be taken into account when interpreting the anatomy of any non-biomineralized fossil vertebrate, such as Haikouichthys, Mayomyzon and Hardistiella.  相似文献

Island populations are of interest for their differentiation as well as their species diversity; some of the earliest biological interest in islands was concerned with the number of 'endemics' thereon. There is dispute about the long-term evolutionary importance of island forms, but they are rich sources of data for studying the under-exploited interface of genetics, ecology and physiology. Differentiation of island populations may arise from genetic change after isolation, or from the chance collection of alleles carried by the colonizing group itself. The general reduction of genetic variance in island populations compared to continental forms of the same species suggests that founder events have played a major role in the formation of most island forms. However, there is ample evidence of adaptation in island populations despite this lower variation; this is relevant when using island biology as a base for the deriving of rules for genetic conservation.  相似文献

The seroprevalence of Hantaan virus (HTNV) in wild rodents in South Korea was analyzed. Wild rodents were trapped in 18 cities in eight provinces during 2005-2007 and on three islands and four mountains during 2008-2010. Sera were collected from 629 out of 933 trapped wild animals and examined for immunoglobulin G antibodies to HTNV using indirect immunofluorescence assays. Apodemus agrarius (80.1%) was the most frequently captured species at almost all trapping sites. The overall prevalence of HTNV antibodies was 0.26 (162/629). Seropositive individuals were more frequent in cities (32.2%, n=410) than on islands (14.0%, n=57) or mountains (13.6%, n= 162). HTNV antibody-positive rate was higher in the fall (29.6%, n=253) than in the spring (23.1%, n=376). A. agrarius had the highest prevalence of HTNV antibodies (26.9%, n=561) of all tested species. Considering all the individuals, the prevalence of HTNV antibodies was higher in males (29.2%, n=250) than in females (22.3%, n=305). Our results show that HTNV is widely distributed throughout South Korea, and that HTNV infection of wild rodents is affected by their habitat, species, sex, and season.  相似文献

牛头山(=铺路)剖面6个含化石层位中,第3、6、9和第12层为晚上新世,第15、16层为早更新世。晚上新世以Hypolagus,Nannocricetus mongolicus,Sinocricetus progressus,Mesosiph- neus,Pliosiphneus,Pseudomeriones complicidens,Micromys tedfordi等的最后绝灭为特征;早更新世以Allophaiomys deucalion,Yangia等的出现为特征。根据岩石地层和小哺乳动物组合分析,该剖面上新世/更新世界限应在第12-13层之间。根据动物组合或动物群的对比,将牛头山剖面、钱家沙洼村的洞沟剖面与小水沟剖面、东窑子头村的大南沟剖面及稻地村的老窝沟剖面的不同层位进行了时代排序。  相似文献

洞沟剖面6个层位(第2、4、7、11、16和19层)的小哺乳动物化石揭示剖面第10与第11层间是晚上新世/早更新世界限。界限之上Ochotona youngi、Borsodia chinensis、Allophaiomys deucalion和Yangia trassaerti等首次出现;界限之下Yangia omegodon和Hypolagus schreuderi首次出现以及Paenelimnoecus、Nannocricetus mongolicus、Sinocricetus progressus、Mesosiphneus para- tingi、Micromys tedfordi和Dipus fraudator最后绝灭。根据小哺乳动物组成及其属种转换事件判断,2.58 Ma左右往后气候环境显著向干冷方向转变。  相似文献
