A study of the taphonomy and age profiles of the mole rat population from Langebaanweg ‘E’ Quarry was undertaken in order to see if these subterranean rodents had been accumulated by predation (coprocoenosis hypothesis) or as a result of drowning in their burrows during a flood event (catastrophocenosis hypothesis). Previous research has cited the bathyergids as being the most common rodent at Langebaanweg, however, a comprehensive study of new micromammal material indicates that murids, rather than mole rats, dominate most of the assemblages. The concentration of mole rat remains in many of the fossil-bearing levels at Langebaanweg is, nevertheless, still extremely high compared to other fossil sites or predation assemblages in the area. A taphonomic examination of mole rat incisor surfaces indicates that digestion occurs on between 44% and 54% of incisors in the different assemblages, and this, together with the degree of digestion suggests that category 1 and category 2 predators had been responsible for the accumulation of the fossil mole rat assemblages. The absence of rounding, polishing or weathering on the fossils indicates that there has been little or no transport by water, and that burial of the bones was rapid. Breakage and damage to the anterior portion of many of the mandibles made it impossible to accurately assess the age of the older mole rats, and the majority of mandibles could provide only a minimum age of the animal at the time of death. The age profile indicates that very young individuals are missing from the assemblages. This allows for refutation of the previously made suggestion that flooding was responsible for the death of the majority of Langebaanweg mole rats and also introduces the possibility that Bathyergus hendeyi may have been a social animal, unlike extant bathyergids which are solitary.  相似文献

Abstract

Carnivores are the main biological agents identified in the Upper Pleistocene assemblage of Cova del Coll Verdaguer (NE Iberian Peninsula). At the site, ungulate bones were primarily accumulated and modified by hyenas, as shown by partly digested bones, coprolites and the pattern of damage on bones. However, other small- to medium-sized carnivores seemed to be involved in the accumulation, owing primarily to the presence of their bones and coprolites. Finally, other carnivores, including the brown bear, used the cave to hibernate and for birthing cubs. The combination of zooarchaeological and taphonomic studies, together with previous coprogenic analyses, at the site indicates that it is only by using these combined approaches that it is possible to identify the majority of the agents involved in an accumulation.  相似文献

A taphonomic study has been undertaken on an assemblage of bones and teeth of Isoptychus sp. and Thalerimys fordi (extinct rodent family Theridomyidae) from a single bed in a coastal plain setting, in the Late Eocene (Priabonian) Osborne Member, Headon Hill Formation (Hampshire Basin, UK). The vertebrate fossils show good preservation and do not bear the marks of obvious long distance transport. The two theridomyid species show similar patterns of mortality, element representation and surface modifications, which indicate similar mechanisms of accumulation. There is high mortality of juvenile and old individuals indicating accumulation of the assemblage by the action of attritional not catastrophic agents. The postcranial elements show fragmentary states and very low relative abundances. The vast majority of elongate bones (limb bones, phalanges and metapodials) are broken and exhibit a spiral irregular type of fracture with rounded fracture edges indicating that the bones were broken when they were fresh and have subsequently undergone additional modification. The enamel of most of the cheek teeth and incisors shows localized etching to various degrees and most of the bones show etching. By elimination of other modifying agents the observed etching is attributed to digestive corrosion. Collectively, these data indicate that the majority of the theridomyid individuals were eaten and digested by an animal that could cause high fragmentation during ingestion and with stomach juices of relatively high acidity. Both these features characterize mammalian carnivores. The presence of puncture marks on bones of both theridomyid species and comparisons with sizes of bite marks caused by extant mammalian carnivores suggest predation by a small mammalian carnivore about the size of an arctic fox. The extinct amphicyonid carnivoran Cynodictis cf. lacustris occurs in the same bed and the sizes of some of its teeth match well with the sizes of the puncture marks on the theridomyid bones. A predator–prey interaction is, therefore, deduced for the amphicyonid and the two theridomyid species, thereby reconstructing a small part of the continental Paleogene food chain.  相似文献

Distinguishing leporid bones accumulated by different agents such as diurnal raptors, owls, mammals and humans is essential to gain an understanding of not only human subsistence activities but also past ecology. This is particularly relevant in Iberian Palaeolithic sites where leporid remains usually constitute the most abundant taxon. Among diurnal raptors the Spanish Imperial eagle (Aquila adalberti) has been one of the most important leporid predators throughout the Iberian Peninsula. In order to investigate the taphonomic signature of this raptor, rabbit remains from 79 pellets were examined. Results show a high proportion of distal elements of the limb bones and skull. Compared with other diurnal birds of prey, the assemblages produced by this species appear to show a higher degree of breakage and corrosion from digestion. These results place this predator within a category similar to the small mammal carnivores (category 5) in terms of skeletal element abundance, breakage and digestion. It is hoped that these data will enable analysts to identify leporid fossils accumulated by the Spanish Imperial Eagle in archaeological assemblages.  相似文献

The absence of Pan and Gorilla fossils from Africa has led some to suggest that African rain forests are not conducive to bone preservation. The absence of fossils is unfortunate as it hampers phylogenetic and socioecological interpretations on the divergence of the earliest hominids. For the most part, taphonomic studies have been restricted to cave and open country contexts. With this in mind, we have initiated a taphonomic project in a tropical rain forest, the Kibale Forest of western Uganda. In the course of bone gathering activities over the past 4 years, we have documented the retrieval of skeletal remains representing nine chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii). Crania and mandibles are most commonly recovered, followed by elements of the axial skeleton, and finally, appendages. Vertical segregation of small compact bones can occur in areas with a soft substrate. Scavenging activity suggests the role of suids, but this has not been proven. Geochemical tests suggest that Kibale soils are neutral and may be conducive to bone preservation. Our independent preliminary data from bone weathering/survival experiments indicate that bones appear undamaged after several years and are able to accumulate on the forest floor. These results contrast with popular assumptions on the potential of African rain forests as potential fossil reservoirs.  相似文献

Recent excavation at the Late Cretaceous Egg Mountain locality in Montana revealed abundant Spheroolithus eggshell fragments. The depositional history of the fragments is problematic due to the vertical dispersal of eggshell in homogeneous mudstone. The results of previous studies assessing eggshell transport are based on thin, modern eggshell occurring on well-defined horizons. Therefore, the assessment of depositional history required a different method. Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) and ostrich (Struthio camelus) eggshells were placed in a tumbler with water and quartz sand for 168–504 h to simulate transport. The resulting wear on these fragments, revealed under scanning electron microscope, was compared to unabraded eggshell. In addition, the modern eggshell was compared to fossil eggshells from a nesting site, crevasse splay and channel deposits, and Egg Mountain. Fossil eggshells from high-energy paleoenvironments display similar edge rounding to modern eggshell placed in the tumbler. In contrast, eggshell from Egg Mountain lacked edge rounding and resembled fossil eggshell from a nesting site and unabraded modern eggshell, suggesting that the Egg Mountain locality represents a parautochthonous assemblage. This study indicates that sediment interaction leaves distinct patterns of abrasion on eggshell, which may be useful for assessing transport of eggshell at fossil localities.  相似文献

Faunal remains from spoil heaps of two burrows inhabited by small carnivores (fox and badger) are analysed from a taphonomical point of view. This analysis provides characteristics for bone accumulation produced by small carnivores and will be a powerful tool for deciphering site formation about the occupational alternation of small carnivores and humans. Identified species were grouped by size classes. Faunal spectrum is composed by varied species of microfauna (70%), mesofauna (30%). Macromammal remains are under represented (less than 1%) and come from scavenged carcasses. Predators and consumed species are compared on the basis of the skeletal part representation, age classes and recording of predation marks (gnawed and digested bones). Skeletal part representation shows that all taxons exhibit a low-representation of axial skeleton and autopodial bones. Predators show a high representation of hind limb bones and a low representation of the fore limb bones whereas consumed species exhibit a reverse pattern. Mortality curve analysis provides an attritional profile for carnivores and helps for the establishment of the season of occupation of the burrow. Adults largely dominate consumed species. Moreover, predation marks are found in 1% of the carnivores’ bones and from 15% to more than 40% on prey bones. The large-sized prey bones only wear gnawed marks (20%) and anthropic marks (10–20%) whereas microfaunal remains exhibits more digested marks (40%) than gnawing stigmata (5%). Stomach content data from 798 Pacific walruses ( Odobenus rosmarus divergens ) collected during 1952–1991 were analyzed using a method that evaluates the stage of digestion of prey remains. Non-molluscan prey taxa were not well represented in previous interpretations of walrus diet due to digestion biases. Stomach contents least affected by digestion (fresh stomachs) contained more prey taxa than stomachs of an unknown or more digested state. Bivalves, gastropods, and polychaete worms were the most frequent prey items in both the Bering and Chukchi seas, although bivalves occurred more frequently in stomachs from the Bering Sea and gastropods occurred more frequently in stomachs from the Chukchi Sea. Male and female walruses consumed essentially the same prey when in the same location. Using only fresh stomachs collected between 1975 and 1985, there was no significant difference between the proportion that contained mostly bivalves and the proportion that contained non-bivalve prey items. Earlier interpretations of a change in walrus diet in this period compared to the prior two decades may have been due to digestion as well as sampling biases. Current climatic changes may affect walrus's access to diverse, productive shallow water feeding areas.  相似文献

Research on the predation of ticks by chickens is required to establish the potential rôle of chickens as biological control agents for ticks. In the present study, 26 local chickens were allowed to feed in groups of two or three for 1 hour on a meal containing adult unengorged Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Amblyomma variegatum and slaughtered thereafter at different intervals ranging from 11 min to 24 h. The contents of the digestive tracts of the chickens were carefully examined under a dissecting microscope to determine the state of digestion of the ingested ticks.

All ticks found in the crop were not digested and a few A. variegatum were attached to the crop wall and were found dead. The gizzard contained partially and completely digested ticks while tick remnants were predominant in the small intestine. It was concluded that most of the digestion of tick proteins takes place in the small intestine. It was also concluded that, although the digestion rate of ticks varies in individual chickens, all ticks digested in a meal should have been completely digested and absorption of the tick nutrients should have started within 21–24 h although this could have been accomplished as early as 9 h by chickens with fast digestion rates.  相似文献

Remains of jawed polychaetes were recovered from stomach contents of queen triggerfish ( Balistes vetula L.) collected by spearing from Came Bow Cay, Belize, Central America. Jaws in the nereidids, glycerids, and arabellids recovered are perfectly preserved, and might be passed by the fish without noticeable alteration. Jaws in the onuphids are fully articulated, but the outer wall-layer has been digested away, leaving only the inner aragonitic layer intact. A low fossilization potential for onuphid jaws is indicated, consistent with laboratory studies of jaw composition. Based on literature accounts, fish predation may have a considerable influence on polychaete jaw (scolecodont) assemblages in sediment.  相似文献

The factors influencing the digestion of pebble-milled cellulose by enzymes were studied by using several strains of Ruminococcus albus including a mutant characterized by a more eccentric location of its colony in the clearing produced by digestion of the cellulose in the thin layer lining the wall of a culture tube. Most of the cellulase is extracellular. As much as 65% of the cellulose could be digested by the cell-free enzymes provided the quantity of cellulose was small. Fresh enzyme was repeatedly administered or the digestion experiment was arranged in a dialysis bag through which digestion products could diffuse. Cellobiose and, to a lesser extent, glucose inhibited digestion. Pebble-milled filter paper, moist crystalline cellulose from cotton, and dry crystalline cellulose (Sigmacel) were digested, but in decreasing rapidity, respectively. Carboxymethylcellulose was digested more rapidly than pebble-milled cellulose but to approximately the same final extent as judged by Cu reduction values. Cell walls from alfalfa were digested. The enzyme preparation was active over the pH range 6.0 to 6.8 and showed most rapid cellulose digestion at 45 C. Part of the cellulolytic activity was irreversibly destroyed by exposure to oxygen. Much of the enzyme was absorbed on cellulose. The absorption and desorption characteristics, as well as the partial inhibition by oxygen, indicate that multiple enzymes are involved.  相似文献

The mass occurrence of turritelline gastropod shells from the Lower Miocene of southern Germany allows for detailed studies of their palaeoecology, transport mechanisms, preservation potentials and the reconstruction of nutrient regimes. Changes in the fabric of the gastropod-dominated beds are used to reconstruct a generally deepening environment corresponding to the Lower Miocene transgression within the Upper Molasse Sea of the North Alpine Foreland Basin. The sedimentary succession ranges from chaotically arranged, densely packed and near-shore transported; wave-influenced deposits showing bimodal shell orientations; more widely dispersed shells showing a uni-directional orientation; and dispersed shells showing diverse orientations. The shells often show damage to the apex and aperture though it is not clear whether this is due to predation events, pagurisation or abrasion due to transport. An outstanding feature is the replacement of aragonite shells by calcite leading to internal vugs as well as modulating the outer shell surface morphology. The high density of turritelline gastropods indicates a nutrient-rich palaeoenvironment at the northern edge of the Molasse Sea.  相似文献

石制品微痕是进行石器功能研究、了解史前人类行为模式的重要考古证据之一。本文在以往实验研究的基础上, 设计并开展多阶段燧石制品"刮骨"微痕实验, 分阶段详细、直观地记录石制品刃缘使用微痕的最初形成与发展动态。实验研究表明, "刮骨"使用微痕迹随着使用时间长度的递增发生复杂的动态变化, 使用微痕的发展与使用时间之间并非简单的正函数关系。片疤破损自开始在一定时间段内呈连续发生状态, 随后停止发展, 是确认石制品是否经过使用的良好指示。磨圆表现出由少到多、由弱及强的逐渐发育过程, 可以反映石制品的使用时间和强度, 也是判断使用微痕的重要参考依据。  相似文献

Modifications on the cheek teeth and dentary bone (loss of dental tissues on the extra‐alveolar portion of the cheek teeth, and corrosion on the surface of the dentary bone) of fossil specimens of medium to giant South American rodents (mainly neoepiblemids) from the Neogene (Brazil and Argentina) are documented here. These features are similar to those observed in teeth and bones of small hypsodont rodents (recent and Quaternary fossils) that were subjected to digestive process by predators/scavengers. Based on comparisons, we tentatively hypothesize that acid‐etching resulting from digestive processes could have caused the modifications in the specimens, providing evidence of a palaeoecological interaction between neoepiblemids (and other rodents), and predators or scavengers.  相似文献

Drill holes made by predators in prey shells are widely considered to be the most unambiguous bodies of evidence of predator-prey interactions in the fossil record. However, recognition of traces of predatory origin from those formed by abiotic factors still waits for a rigorous evaluation as a prerequisite to ascertain predation intensity through geologic time and to test macroevolutionary patterns. New experimental data from tumbling various extant shells demonstrate that abrasion may leave holes strongly resembling the traces produced by drilling predators. They typically represent singular, circular to oval penetrations perpendicular to the shell surface. These data provide an alternative explanation to the drilling predation hypothesis for the origin of holes recorded in fossil shells. Although various non-morphological criteria (evaluation of holes for non-random distribution) and morphometric studies (quantification of the drill hole shape) have been employed to separate biological from abiotic traces, these are probably insufficient to exclude abrasion artifacts, consequently leading to overestimate predation intensity. As a result, from now on, we must adopt more rigorous criteria to appropriately distinguish abrasion artifacts from drill holes, such as microstructural identification of micro-rasping traces.  相似文献

本文以泥河湾盆地板井子遗址(约90 kaBP)2015年出土的动物骨骼为材料,通过骨骼表面痕迹分析、骨骼单元出现频率研究及长骨破碎方式的统计,辨识自然作用与人类行为对动物骨骼造成的不同影响,讨论深海氧同位素5阶段(MIS 5)中国北方古人类获取、搬运及处理动物资源的综合性策略。研究结果显示:1)遗址出土的动物遗存为古人类活动所遗留,自然营力对动物骨骼有改造作用,但并未影响我们对古人类行为的辨识;2)古人类在捕获马科动物之后,将其完整地带回了遗址并肢解;3)在处理猎物遗骸时,肌肉和骨髓富集的部位是古人类利用的重点。结合河南许昌灵井遗址的动物遗存研究结果,我们认为,在MIS 5阶段前后,中国北方已经出现了可以高效利用动物资源的人类群体;稳定、充沛的能量来源,或是他们应对北半球中高纬度干旱草原环境气候波动的重要生存策略。  相似文献

本文以丁村遗址角页岩为原料打制实验标本,设计展开雕刻器微痕实验,并对其中部分标本按照序贯试验原理进行分阶段实验。实验结果表明,角页岩雕刻器雕刻刃的使用微痕基本特征为:轻度到重度磨圆,片疤数量较少,多小中型片疤,终端形态多为羽状和阶梯状,以分散分布为主,大片疤常单独出现。分阶段实验结果表明,磨圆是以从快到慢速度生成的,片疤在不同阶段发生改变。本文旨在通过对角页岩雕刻器使用微痕的研究,为探讨考古标本功能提供可参照的数据与图像。  相似文献

Selenomonas ruminantium strains were isolated from sheep rumen, and their significance for fiber digestion was evaluated. Based on the phylogenetic classification, two clades of S. ruminantium (clades I and II) were proposed. Clade II is newly found, as it comprised only new isolates that were phylogenetically distant from the type strain, while all of the known isolates were grouped in the major clade I. More than half of clade I isolates displayed CMCase activity with no relation to the degree of bacterial adherence to fibers. Although none of the isolates digested fiber in monoculture, they stimulated fiber digestion when co-cultured with Fibrobacter succinogenes, and there was an enhancement of propionate production. The extent of such synergy depended on the clade, with higher digestion observed by co-culture of clade I isolates with F. succinogenes than by co-culture with clade II isolates. Quantitative PCR analysis showed that bacterial abundance in the rumen was higher for clade I than for clade II. These results suggest that S. ruminantium, in particular the major clade I, is involved in rumen fiber digestion by cooperating with F. succinogenes.  相似文献

The first experiments to clearly demonstrate that DNA techniques might be used to detect predator-prey interactions between arthropods are reported. The accurate modelling of such interactions has depended until now upon a mixture of laboratory experiments, population monitoring and biochemical tests. The latter involve gut-content analyses, and have most recently depended upon the development of prey-specific monoclonal antibodies. Although these are excellent for detecting predation on a target prey, they are impractical for analysing the prey range of a particular predator. Molecular detection depends upon the ability of DNA to resist digestion in the predator gut and of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify prey-specific DNA from semidigested material. As a first step, experiments using carabid beetles, Pterostichus cupreus L., as predators and mosquitoes as prey are reported. The target sequences were fully characterized multiple-copy esterase genes from two laboratory strains of Culex quinquefasciatus Say. Although DNA was extracted from homogenates of whole beetles (minus appendages), a 146 bp product could be amplified from both mosquito strains digested in the beetle gut for 28 h. The larger, 263 bp product was detectable for 28 h in one mosquito strain, but could not be amplified after 5 h from the other. Whether the beetles had eaten one mosquito or six, digested for zero or 28 h, the prey were equally detectable. Having demonstrated that shorter, multiple-copy sequences survive digestion for a considerable period in the gut of a predator, the opportunity exists to develop new detection systems for studying predation in the field.  相似文献
