Groups of linyphiid spiders (Erigone spp.) (Araneae, Linyphiidae), collected at intervals from arable land, were tested in laboratory bioassays to determine the proportion of individuals that exhibited ballooning behaviour on each field sampling occasion. There was no significant variation in the proportions of spiders in each test group ballooning in the laboratory over a year. Investigations of ground density and aerial dispersal, in a grass field and a winter-wheat field, confirmed that peaks in numbers of spiders observed ballooning in the field generally coincided with population peaks in the summer and autumn. Significant correlations between ground populations and aerial catches were found for total spiders, immature spiders, and Bathyphantes gracilis (Blackwall) in both fields, adult spiders in the grass field, Erigone spp. in the grass, and Meioneta rurestris (C.L. Koch) in the wheat. The other groups analysed, Lepthyphantes tenuis (Blackwall) in both fields, Erigone spp. in wheat, and M. rurestris in grass, showed similar but non-significant trends. No significant difference was found between overall ground-to-air ratios for males compared to females, but adult spiders were more likely to balloon than immatures.  相似文献

The nature of the anion–π interaction has been investigated by carrying out ab initio calculations of the complexes of coinage metal anions (Au?, Ag?, and Cu?) with different kinds of π-systems. The binding energies indicate that gold anion has the highest and copper anion has the lowest affinity for interactions with π-systems. Different aspects of the anion–π interaction in these systems have been investigated, including charge-transfer effects (using the Merz–Kollman method), “atoms-in-molecules” (AIM) topological parameters, and interaction energies (using energy decomposition analysis, EDA). Our results indicated that, for most M?···π interactions, the electrostatic term provides the dominant contribution, whereas polarization, charge transfer, and dispersion effects contribute less than 25 % of the interaction. We believe that the present results should lead to a greater understanding of the basis for anion–π interactions of coinage metal anions.  相似文献

A technique was developed to monitor and describe the relationship between core body temperature (Tc) and rumen temperature (Trum) in cattle. This relationship was assessed in cattle subjected to varying environmental temperatures and subsequent variations in dry matter and water intake. Increasing the environmental wet bulb temperature (WBT) from ambient conditions (approximately 15 °C WBT) to mild heat stress conditions (25 °C WBT) caused an increase in both Tc and Trum with significant decreases in feed intake and increases in water consumption. Despite increases in both Tc and Trum, reductions in dry matter intake, and an increase in water consumption, the relationship between Tc and Trum did not change.  相似文献

The effects of low frequency electric and magnetic fields on several biochemical systems, including the Na,K-ATPase, indicate that electromagnetic (EM) fields interact with electrons. The frequency optima for two enzymes in response to EM fields are very close to their turnover numbers, suggesting that these interactions directly affect reaction rates. Nevertheless, generally accepted ideas about Na,K-ATPase function and ion transport mechanisms do not consider interactions with electrons. To resolve the clash of paradigms, we hypothesize interaction with transient electrons and protons that arise from flickering of H-bonds in the hydrated protein. These transient charges in the enzyme could provide a trigger for the sequence of conformation changes that are part of the ion transport mechanism. If the distributions of transient electrons and protons in the membrane are affected by their concentration and the membrane potential, as expected from electric double layer theory, this can account for the different effects of low frequency electric and magnetic fields, as well as for the observation that membrane hyperpolarization reverses the ATPase reaction to generate ATP.  相似文献

We tested if variations (i.e., breadth) in morphology and habitat use vary predictably among six aquatic gastropod species that were collected across Indiana and Illinois, USA. We predicted that interspecific morphological variation would positively covary with variation in habitat use among species. We used geometric morphometrics (Procrustes technique and relative warp analysis) to quantify morphology and multivariate analyses (PCA) to quantify habitat. Increased morphological breadth did not vary predictably with increased habitat breadth. However, we found that life history traits correspond with patterns in morphological and habitat breadth for these six aquatic gastropods. Pulmonate gastropods (use lungs for respiration) that lack an operculum cover exhibited decreased morphological breadth compared to coenogastropods (use gills for respiration). This pattern may ultimately be a function of behavioral adaptations in freshwater gastropods. Gastropods that are capable of breathing air or using other behavioral modifications such as burrowing to escape predators may not require high morphological breadth. Conversely, selection may favor higher morphological breadth in gastropods with gills that also do not move out of the water column to escape predators.  相似文献

Grazing by large ungulates often increases plant species richness in grasslands of moderate to high productivity. In a mesic North American grassland with and without the presence of bison (Bos bison), a native ungulate grazer, three non-exclusive hypotheses for increased plant species richness in grazed grasslands were evaluated: (1) bison grazing enhances levels of resource (light and N) availability, enabling species that depend on higher resource availability to co-occur; (2) spatial heterogeneity in resource availability is enhanced by bison, enabling coexistence of a greater number of plant species; (3) increased species turnover (i.e. increased species colonization and establishment) in grazed grassland is associated with enhanced plant species richness. We measured availability and spatial heterogeneity in light, water and N, and calculated species turnover from long-term data in grazed and ungrazed sites in a North American tallgrass prairie. Both regression and path analyses were performed to evaluate the potential of the three hypothesized mechanisms to explain observed patterns of plant species richness under field conditions. Experimental grazing by bison increased plant species richness by 25% over an 8-year period. Neither heterogeneity nor absolute levels of soil water or available N were related to patterns of species richness in grazed and ungrazed sites. However, high spatial heterogeneity in light and higher rates of species turnover were both strongly related to increases in plant species richness in grazed areas. This suggests that creation of a mosaic of patches with high and low biomass (the primary determinant of light availability in mesic grasslands) and promotion of a dynamic species pool are the most important mechanisms by which grazers affect species richness in high productivity grasslands.  相似文献

Additive influences of the invasion ability of species (invasiveness) and the characteristics of the habitat which make it invasible (invasibility) cannot fully explain grassland invasion patterns. We tested the hypothesis that different species assemblages of grassland communities may partly result from interactive influences between the relative invasiveness of available species and community invasibility. During 10 months, we evaluated seed and microsite limitation of seedling emergence, survival, and recruitment of plants belonging to species with different seed size (large-seeded species vs. small-seeded species), with in a two-phase community mosaic typical of semi-natural grasslands in the southern flooding Pampa of Argentina. Seeds of large versus small-seeded species were sown either in species-poor patches dominated by a tall tussock grass (“pajonal”) or in species-rich patches dominated by short grasses (“matrix”), subjected to different levels of canopy disturbance (cut vs. uncut). Seed addition promoted seedling emergence for 7 out of the 10 species sown, and this effect was higher for large than for small-seeded species. After seed limitations were removed, interactive effects among seed size, community state and canopy disturbance reflected a strong positive influence of seed size on plant recruitment only in cut pajonal patches. Therefore, according to the stage of invasion process, relative species success may depend on non-interactive (seed-size effect on seed limitation to seedling emergence) or interactive influences among species invasibility and community invasiveness (from seedling emergence to plant recruitment). As a general conclusion, different assemblages of species are expected to successfully colonize spatially close grassland patches, according to both the available invasible species (seed size) and the community state and stage (species composition and canopy disturbance).  相似文献

A review of studies of sex-biased dispersal and philopatry and sex-biased survival in birds is presented. The comparison between sex-related mortality and natal and breeding dispersal at the species-level shows that dispersing birds (mainly females) suffer higher mortality, while philopatric birds (mainly males) have higher survival. The interaction between sex-biased survival and spatial behavior is a crucial component of avian vital strategy, which determine population dynamics and genetic structure.  相似文献

The usual paradigm in which peptides are tested for their effect on food intake involves measuring intake of readily available food. In the lever press apparatus, the subjects must "work" to get food. Such work has traditionally been used as a means of measuring motivation. Mice were trained to press a lever for milk reinforcement. After achieving a stable level of performance, we tested the effects of gastrin-related peptide (GRP), bombesin (BBS) and cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8) on lever pressing. All three peptides suppressed lever pressing for milk reinforcement. Prefeeding mice with milk increased the suppression of lever pressing to a greater extent in peptide-treated mice than in saline-treated mice. As the duration of prefeeding increased, lever pressing decreased. When mice were required to make more lever presses to obtain milk, both saline- and CCK-8-treated mice increased their lever pressing. However, saline-treated mice pressed at a higher rate than CCK-8-treated mice. Unlike the results obtained with saline and CCK-8, administration of a known gustatory adversant, lithium chloride, suppressed lever pressing to the same degree in mice fed or not fed prior to training. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that these peptides act as satiety agents.  相似文献

A key step in the process of metastasis is the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). We hypothesized that epigenetic mechanisms play a key role in EMT and to test this hypothesis we analyzed global and gene-specific changes in DNA methylation during TGF-β-induced EMT in ovarian cancer cells. Epigenetic profiling using the Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip (HM450) revealed extensive (P < 0.01) methylation changes after TGF-β stimulation (468 and 390 CpG sites altered at 48 and 120 h post cytokine treatment, respectively). The majority of gene-specific TGF-β-induced methylation changes occurred in CpG islands located in or near promoters (193 and 494 genes hypermethylated at 48 and 120 h after TGF-β stimulation, respectively). Furthermore, methylation changes were sustained for the duration of TGF-β treatment and reversible after the cytokine removal. Pathway analysis of the hypermethylated loci identified functional networks strongly associated with EMT and cancer progression, including cellular movement, cell cycle, organ morphology, cellular development, and cell death and survival. Altered methylation and corresponding expression of specific genes during TGF-β-induced EMT included CDH1 (E-cadherin) and COL1A1 (collagen 1A1). Furthermore, TGF-β induced both expression and activity of DNA methyltransferases (DNMT) -1, -3A, and -3B, and treatment with the DNMT inhibitor SGI-110 prevented TGF-β-induced EMT. These results demonstrate that dynamic changes in the DNA methylome are implicated in TGF-β-induced EMT and metastasis. We suggest that targeting DNMTs may inhibit this process by reversing the EMT genes silenced by DNA methylation in cancer.  相似文献

Monitoring trends in wildlife populations is essential to effective management. Evaluating only a single metric can be cost-effective; however, how a given metric responds to environmental variation may differ from other population- or individual-level metrics. Consequently, conclusions about the effect of environmental variation on a species should consider the relationship between different metrics. We investigated how population-level metrics (occupancy and relative abundance) and an individual-level metric (body condition) responded to landscape variation in 3 semi-aquatic salamander species. In the summer of 2015 and 2016, we conducted repeated count surveys at 71 streams on the Cumberland Plateau, Tennessee, USA, actively counting and measuring salamanders. We estimated occupancy and abundance of larval and post-metamorphic animals using community-occupancy and community-N mixture models, respectively. We estimated body condition of the most observed life stage for each species using a standardized mass index. All models included the same set of covariates for comparison. Occupancy and abundance responses for each life stage-by-species combination were positively correlated for 4 of 6 combinations, with salamander abundance responding to a larger suite of covariates. Body condition was not linked to covariates in the same fashion as population-level metrics, although consistency across species was detected for 1 covariate, watershed size. Our results indicate that inter-specific and inter-life stage variation in evaluated metrics is present within salamanders of this study system. Management for populations of salamanders in the region should consider monitoring multiple response metrics, to capture both population- and individual-level responses, as these may not always be correlated.  相似文献

The Big Creek Crayfish, Orconectes peruncus, is native to the St. Francis River drainage in Missouri, USA and is often absent where the introduced Woodland Crayfish, Orconectes hylas, has established. We performed a field experiment to determine whether effects of current abiotic conditions and interspecific competition with O. hylas were responsible for displacement of O. peruncus from parts of their former range. We examined growth and survival of juvenile male O. peruncus exposed to juvenile male O. hylas in enclosures at two sites in the former range of O. peruncus. Enclosures contained 8 (low density) or 16 individuals (high density) and had O. peruncus only (control) or both species (interspecific treatment). Juvenile O. peruncus were able to survive and grow in portions of their former range, implicating biotic versus abiotic factors in the displacement of O. peruncus. Survival rates of O. peruncus did not differ among treatments at either site. Orconectes peruncus showed significant growth in all treatments and interspecific effects were not greater than intraspecific effects on O. peruncus growth rates. High-density treatments showed significantly reduced O. peruncus growth rates compared to low-density treatments, except in Carver Creek interspecific treatments. When considered in the context of previous studies examining the effects of O. hylas on O. peruncus, results suggest that neither direct competition between juvenile males of the two species or abiotic change are responsible for the decreased range of O. peruncus. Additional research is required to determine the mechanism(s) driving the displacement of O. peruncus.  相似文献

That one or multiple measures of metabolic rate may be robustly associated with, or possibly even causative of, the progression of aging‐resultant phenotypes such as lifespan is a long‐standing, well‐known mechanistic hypothesis. To broach this hypothesis, we assessed metabolic function and spontaneous locomotion in two genetic and one dietary mouse models for retarded aging, and subjected the data to mediation analyses to determine whether any metabolic or locomotor trait could be identified as a mediator of the effect of any of the interventions on senescence. We do not test the hypothesis of causality (which would require some experiments), but instead test whether the correlation structure of certain variables is consistent with one possible pathway model in which a proposed mediating variable has a causal role. Results for metabolic measures, including oxygen consumption and respiratory quotient, failed to support this hypothesis; similar negative results were obtained for three behavioral motion metrics. Therefore, our mediation analyses did not find support that any of these correlates of decelerated senescence was a substantial mediator of the effect of either of these genetic alterations (with or without caloric restriction) on longevity. Further studies are needed to relate the examined phenotypic characteristics to mechanisms of aging and control of longevity.  相似文献

The addition of nutrients has been shown to decrease the species richness of plant communities. Herbivores feed on dominant plant species and should release subdominant species from competitive exclusion at high levels of nutrient availability with a severe competitive regime. Therefore, the effects of nutrients and invertebrate herbivory on the structure and diversity of plant communities should interact. To test this hypothesis, we used artificial plant communities in microcosms with different levels of productivity (applying fertilizer) and herbivory (adding different numbers of the snail, Cepaea hortensis, and the grasshopper, Chorthippus parallelus). For analyses, we assigned species to three functional groups: grasses, legumes and (non-leguminous) herbs. With the addition of nutrients aboveground biomass increased and species richness of plants decreased. Along the nutrient gradient, species composition shifted from a legume-dominated community to a community dominated by fast-growing annuals. But only legumes showed a consistent negative response to nutrients, while species of grasses and herbs showed idiosyncratic patterns. Herbivory had only minor effects, and bottom–up control was more important than top–down control. With increasing herbivory the biomass of the dominant plant species decreased and evenness increased. We found no interaction between nutrient availability and invertebrate herbivory. Again, species within functional groups showed no consistent responses to herbivory. Overall, the use of the functional groups grasses, legumes and non-leguminous herbs was of limited value to interpret the effects of nutrients and herbivory during our experiments.  相似文献
