Thailand populations of three species of the D. nasuta complex have been analysed for the presence of paracentric inversions. D. albomicans and D. sulfurigaster albostrigata were collected from Phuket, Chiang Mai and the River Kwai, whilst D. kohkoa was found only in Phuket and the River Kwai. Chromosomal polymorphism was studied in respect to geographical distribution. The Phuket populations of all three species proved to be highly polymorphic by comparison with the River Kwai and Chiang Mai populations. The heterozygosity frequencies of inversions were calculated and the variations interpreted as a result of adaptation to local ecogeographical conditions. Shared polymorphisms revealed that D. kohkoa and D. s. albostrigata are more closely related to D. albomicans than they are to each other.Based on a thesis submitted for the degree of Ph.D. in the University of Queensland.  相似文献

Two species of the Drosophila nasuta subgroup of the Drosophila immigrans group, D. sulphurigaster albostrigata and D. nasuta albomicans were investigated in this study. Collections of both species were made from Phuket, Thailand. Both species have similar salivary chromosomes, with four autosomal arms and one sex chromosome arm, and both are highly polymorphic for paracentric inversions. D. s. albostrigata accounted for the majority of the isolines collected and exhibited the greater number of inversions. One inversion, C1, was common to both species, indicating common ancestry.A non-random distribution of inversions was observed on the proximal end of chromosome II in both D. s. albostrigata and D. n. albomicans. An inter-collection comparison revealed that both rigid and flexible chromosomal polymorphism were operating in the two species, with a seasonal variation noted for one inversion in D. s. albostrigata. A non-random association of two inversions was observed in D. n. albomicans.Based on a comparison of the indices of crossing over, both D. s. albostrigata and D. n. albomicans were found to be more heterozygous than in previous studies, with D. n. albomicans appearing to have evolved further than D. s. albostrigata.Based on a thesis submitted for the degree of Ph. D. at the University of Queensland.  相似文献

This paper is presented as a review of ten years collection of the D. nasuta complex from the Asian region by Dr. Wharton B. Mather. It incorporates the analysis of chromosomal polymorphisms with regard to their geographical distribution and then uses the polymorphisms to establish phylogenetic relationships between D. sulfurigaster albostrigata, D. albomicans and D. kohkoa.  相似文献

The nasuta subgroup of Drosophila consists of 12 known species classified within the immigrans group. D. nasuta and D. albomicans are two sibling species widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific tropics, which, although morphologically indistinguishable, have different meta-phase-chromosome configurations: chromosomes X and 3 are attached in D. albomicans, so that about 60% of its genes are sex-linked. Our experiments show that, at least in the laboratory, there is no sexual, mechanical, or gametic isolation between the two species. There is, however, hybrid “breakdown” expressed in three ways: 1) reduction in the number of F2 hybrids produced per culture; 2) reduction in the fertility of F2 (males) and F3 (males and females) hybrid progenies; and 3) abnormal sex ratios in the progenies of crosses between strains of certain localities. In experimental populations, the karyotypes of both species are still present in substantial frequencies after 20 generations, although the frequencies of the two karyotypes vary depending on the geographic origin of the strains. Our results support the hypothesis that, in allopatry, the evolution of postzygotic isolation precedes that of prezygotic isolation. The mtDNA is polymorphic in both D. nasuta and D. albomicans and fairly similar between them. Assuming typical rates of mtDNA evolution, the two species would have diverged from each other about 500,000 years ago, whereas the African and Indian populations of D. nasuta (considered to be different subspecies by some authors) might have diverged some 350,000 years ago.  相似文献

Anopheles cruziiis the most common species of mosquito in Southeast Brazil and a vector of human and monkey malaria. The banding pattern of the ovarian polytene chromosomes and the frequencies of paracentric inversions of individuals from two populations were studied. A new sequence of bands on the sex chromosome, defined as form C, was disclosed. In both populations where forms A (considered as standard) and C are sympatric no heterozygotes were detected. A sequence of events that could account for the observed changes in the banding sequences of the X chromosome forms was proposed. The frequencies of 22 paracentric inversions were used to assess panmixia and the results indicated the presence of two distinct genetic pools in each population. We consider these results as evidence of another sibling species in the taxon cruzii, characterized by a distinctive form of the X chromosome and provisionally designated Anopheles cruziispecies C.  相似文献

D. bipectinata and D. malerkotliana differ from each other by three overlapping inversions in IIL, two included inversions in IIIL and two overlapping inversions in IIIR. These inversions were analysed on the basis of the salivary chromosome maps of D. malerkotliana. Bock's (1971) data revealed that the four members of the bipectinata species complex differ from each other with respect to overlapping inversions. The reason why the ancestral population which may have been heterozygous for common inversions split into at least four groups, each leading to the formation of a new species, and the possible mechanism of the origin of sexual isolation between the groups is discussed.  相似文献

Chromosomal inversion polymorphism was characterized in Finnish Drosophila montana populations. A total of 14 polymorphic inversions were observed in Finnish D. montana of which nine had not been described before. The number of polymorphic inversions in each chromosome was not significantly different from that expected, assuming equal chance of occurrence in the euchromatic genome. There was, however, no correlation between the number of polymorphic inversions and that of fixed inversions in each chromosome. Therefore, a simple neutral model does not explain the evolutionary dynamics of inversions. Furthermore, in contrast to results obtained by others, no significant correlation was found between the two transposable elements (TEs) Penelope and Ulysses and inversion breakpoints in D. montana. This result suggests that these TEs were not involved in the creation of the polymorphic inversions seen in D. montana. A comparative analysis of D. montana and Drosophila virilis polytene chromosomes 4 and 5 was performed with D. virilis bacteriophage P1 clones, thus completing the comparative studies of the two species.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships among nine entities of Drosophila belonging to the D. willistoni subgroup were investigated by establishing the homologous chromosomal segments of IIR chromosome, Muller’s element B (equivalent to chromosome 2L of D. melanogaster). The sibling species of the D. willistoni group investigated include D. willistoni, D. tropicalis tropicalis, D. tropicalis cubana, D. equinoxialis, D. insularis and four semispecies of the D. paulistorum complex. The phylogenetic relationships were based on the existence of segments in different triads of species, which could only be produced by overlapping inversions. Polytene banding similarity maps and break points of inversions between species are presented. The implications of the chromosomal data for the phylogeny of the species and comparisons with molecular data are discussed. The aim of this study is to produce phylogenetic trees depicting accurately the sequence of natural events that have occurred in the evolution of these sibling species. The rate of recombination between linked inversions of the third chromosome of Drosophila ananassae has been investigated by means of the salivary gland smear technique. Different homozygous strains of the species were utilised during the present investigation. The data show that the crossover rate between heterozygous inversions of the third chromosome of D. ananassae varies among different strains. This suggests that recombination between heterozygous inversions is influenced by genic (strain) factors.  相似文献

Glue proteins are tissue-specific proteins synthesized by larval salivary gland cells ofDrosophila. InDrosophila nasuta nasuta andD. n. albomicans of thenasuta subgroup, the genes that encode the major glue protein fractions are X-linked. In the present study, these X-linked markers have been employed to trace the pattern of introgression ofD. n. nasuta andD. n. albomicans genomes with respect to the major glue protein fractions in their interracial hybrids, called cytoraces. These cytoraces have inherited the chromosomes of both parents and have been maintained in the laboratory for over 400–550 generations. The analysis has revealed that cytoraces withD. n. albomicans X chromosome show eitherD. n. nasuta pattern or a completely novel pattern of glue protein fractions. Further, quantitative analysis also shows lack of correlation between the chromosomal pattern of inheritance and overall quantity of the major glue protein fractions in the cytoraces. Thus, in cytoraces the parental chromosomes are not just differentially represented but there is evidence for introgression even at the gene level.  相似文献

In Drosophila ananassae, three cosmopolitan inversions are very common in natural populations. Chromosomal polymorphism due to these inversions often persists when strains are maintained in the laboratory. A chromosomal analysis of a number of strains was made. Data on the frequencies of different gene sequences will be described separately. During the present investigation the same data have been analyzed in order to test the intra- and interchromosomal interactions in D. ananassae. The results reveal that interchromosomal interactions do not occur with respect to viability as unlinked inversions are associated randomly. However, the linked inversions of the third chromosome show non-random associations maintained by epistatic gene interaction and suppression of crossing over.  相似文献

Summary Studies of chromosomal polymorphism in natural populations of D. guaramunu and D. griseolineata in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, confirmed and extended previous findings in these species. The more common D. guaramunu is much more polymorphic than its closest but less common relative D. griseolineata. In the former species, the frequencies of four inversions showed differences from locality to locality, and five inversions of the same species showed temporal changes in the population of Bexiga. It was not possible to correlate the differences with any particular factor in the environment, though the temporal changes were perhaps due to seasonal climatic cycles.Inversion heterosis was not evident in either species — instead, inversion Ee of D. guaramunu was found to be less frequent than expected on the basis of the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in the localities of Emboaba, Bexiga and Feliz. The implications of these findings are discussed.Fellow of the Conselho Nacional de Pesquisas.  相似文献

Twelve Indian natural populations of Drosophila ananassae, a cosmopolitan and domestic species, were sampled and laboratory populations (mass cultures) were established from naturally impregnated females. These populations were maintained in the laboratory for some generations and were analysed chromosomally to know the frequency of different inversions. The chromosomal analysis revealed the presence of three cosmopolitan inversions. The data on the whole show that there are significant differences in the frequencies of different chromosome arrangements in these populations. Body size (wing length and thorax length) was measured in both sexes (50 females and 50 males), in all the 12 geographical populations of D. ananassae. There are statistically significant differences in wing length as well as in thorax length of both sexes among different geographical populations. Five geographical strains were crossed reciprocally and body size (wing length and thorax length) was measured in F1 and F2 progeny. The comparison of body size (both traits) between mid‐parent, F1 and F2 shows that there is an increase in body size in F1 and F2 progeny as compared with parents. Thus, there is no break down of heterosis in F2, which suggests absence of coadaptation in geographical populations of D. ananassae. Scaling test statistical analysis showed additive, dominance and epistatic effects in certain crosses involving geographical strains of D. ananassae. Correlation between chromosome arrangement frequency and body size has also been tested and significant negative correlation has been found between 2L – ST chromosome arrangement and male thorax.  相似文献

Twenty autosomal inversions were detected in the polytene chromosomes of larvae obtained by hybridizing inversion-free strains of the species of the bipectinata complex (D. bipectinata, D. parabipectinata, D. malerkotliana and D. pseudoananassae). Twenty autosomal inversions are also known as extant polymorphisms in these species; fifteen (possibly sixteen) of these inversions are different from those detected in the interspecific hybrids. The available evidence permits reconstruction of chromosome phylogenies deriving malerkotliana, pseudoananassae and a population ancestral to both bipectinata and parabipectinata directly from a common ancestral population. The results of the study support the Carson hypothesis of transitional homoselection during the processes of speciation.Part of this study was incorporated in a section of a thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Queensland, Australia; the work was continued under support by a U.S. Public Health Service Research Grant No. GM-11609 from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences to Prof. M. The four paracentric autosomal chromosome inversions In(2L)t, In(2R)NS, In(3L)P and In(3R)R are commonly polymorphic in natural populations of D. melanogaster in Australasia, North America and Asia, with latitudinal clines in the frequencies of each inversion in each region. In each region inversion frequency decreases with increasing distance from the equator, although the precise relationship between frequency and latitude varies between inversions and, for In(2L)t and In(2R)NS, among regions. Each inversion also shows a longitudinal cline in at least one region but none show such a cline in all three. Although no inversion's frequency is associated with the same climatic variable in all three regions, inversion frequencies are generally positively related to annual maximum temperature and, more particularly, minimum temperature and minimum rainfall. The directions of the latitudinal clines and the climatic associations are consonant with evidence from D. melanogaster that inversion frequencies decline in winter. They are also consonant with evidence from some other Drosophila species that inversion heterozygosities are lower at the geographic margins than at the centre of the species' ranges.  相似文献

A local population of the pitcher-plant mosquito, Wyeomyia smithii (Diptera: Culicidae, Culicini) in western New York State contains naturally polymorphic salivary gland chromosomes. Maps depicting the proposed standard sequence of bands along each of the three chromosomes are presented. Structural conformations of heterokaryotypes reveal ten paracentric inversions. Four inversions occur in chromosome 1, and three in each of chromosomes 2 and 3. All the inversions are small, occupying 3–17% of the length of their respective chromosomes, and all are located in the terminal 1/5 to 1/2 of a chromosome arm. Three inversions are almost adjacent on chromosome 1. On chromosome 2 one inversion lies completely within another. Three inversions on chromosome 3 partially overlap. The remaining two inversions occur alone, one on chromosome 1 and the other on chromosome 2. Another polymorphism, with no visible alteration of band sequence, produces asynapsis of all but the tip of the left arm of chromosome 1, and shows a significant change in frequency between two successive years. No inversion exhibits a significant seasonal change in frequency, though some fluctuation in frequency was noted in two cases. The rarest inversion in the population exists at a frequency below 0.01, and the two most common inversions at frequencies of 0.44 and 0.52. The average inversion heterozygosity of an individual is between 1.7 and 2.4 based on two different estimation procedures. Heterokaryotypes for several of the inversions were significantly more frequent than they should have been, given binomial expectations. Cytogenetic analysis of W. smithii was deemed particularly desirable because this species has been and continues to be the subject of extensive biometrical-genetic, ecological, and evolutionary investigation. This paper is the seventh in a series on the ecology and evolution of the pitcher-plant mosquito  相似文献

Drosophila mediopunctata belongs to the tripunctata group, which is the second largest Neotropical group of Drosophila with 64 species described. Here I review the work done with this forest dwelling species, and some applications of the methods developed using it as a model organism, to other species. Specifically I look at: the phylogenetic status of the tripunctata group and its relation with other groups in the Hirtodrosophila-immigrans radiation; D. mediopunctata’s chromosome inversion polymorphism (altitudinal cline of frequencies and evidences of selection); the morphological variation of the wing and the development and applications of the ellipse method to describe the morphology of the wing; the variation on the number of aristal branches; the genetic basis of the polychromatism present in D. mediopunctata and its association with chromosome inversions; the sex-ratio trait and its use in the demonstration of Fisher’s principle; and, finally, the finding of the transposable P-element in this species. This paper is respectfully dedicated to Prof. Sergio Olavo Pinto da Costa whose help was decisive in the initial stages of our work.  相似文献

Ninety-six geographical strains distributed among the incipient species of the Drosophila paulistorum complex were examined cytologically, and the results obtained were correlated with available data on hybridization tests and chromosomal analysis. The complex was found to contain more than sixty-three different inversions, out of which thirty-two were 3rd chromosome configurations. This placed Drosophila paulistorum among the most chromosomally polymorphic species in the genus. The species differs from D. willistoni, in that a great number of inversions is concentrated in one of the chromosomes, as opposed to approximately equal distribution of inversions in the chromosomes of willistoni. — The data obtained in the course of this investigation seem to support the idea that either massive populations become isolated and then form new species, or that the newly forming species tend to retain some of their ancestral polymorphs which might present them with heterotic effects, gradually replacing them with more successful combinations as speciation progresses. The work reported in this article has been carried under Contract No. AT (30-1)-3096, U. Twelve natural populations of Drosophila ananassae were sampled and laboratory populations were derived. All the populations were maintained in food bottles in the laboratory for ten generations by transferring fifty flies (females and males in equal number) in each generation. After ten generations they were analysed chromosomally to determine the frequency of different chromosome arrangements. The results show that there is significant variation in the frequencies of chromosome arrangements and in the level of inversion heterozygosity. Although some of the populations became mo-nomorphic for certain inversions, in general all populations remained polymorphic even after ten generations. The degree of genetic differentiation in the populations after they were transferred to laboratory conditions has been estimated by calculating genetic identity and distance between the initial and final populations based on the differences in chromosome arrangement frequencies. The estimates of I and D suggest that there is considerable variation in the degree of genetic divergence in D. ananassae populations. Some populations have remained unchanged while others have diverged to a considerable extent.  相似文献

Models of speciation‐with‐gene‐flow have shown that the reduction in recombination between alternative chromosome arrangements can facilitate the fixation of locally adaptive genes in the face of gene flow and contribute to speciation. However, it has proven frustratingly difficult to show empirically that inversions have reduced gene flow and arose during or shortly after the onset of species divergence rather than represent ancestral polymorphisms. Here, we present an analysis of whole genome data from a pair of cactophilic fruit flies, Drosophila mojavensis and D. arizonae, which are reproductively isolated in the wild and differ by several large inversions on three chromosomes. We found an increase in divergence at rearranged compared to colinear chromosomes. Using the density of divergent sites in short sequence blocks we fit a series of explicit models of species divergence in which gene flow is restricted to an initial period after divergence and may differ between colinear and rearranged parts of the genome. These analyses show that D. mojavensis and D. arizonae have experienced postdivergence gene flow that ceased around 270 KY ago and was significantly reduced in chromosomes with fixed inversions. Moreover, we show that these inversions most likely originated around the time of species divergence which is compatible with theoretical models that posit a role of inversions in speciation with gene flow.  相似文献
