Meristic and morphometric characters of local populations of fluvial Japanese charr, Salvelinus leucomaenis, which have been isolated above dams and a waterfall, were compared between river systems (Naka and Tone rivers, central Japan) and among the tributaries of the Naka River (Ashinagasawa, Akasawa, Ushirosawa and Moto-okashirasawa streams). Between the river systems, there was a significant difference in the mean number of dorsal fin rays, pyloric caeca, white spots under the lateral line and the proportion of the diameter of the white spots to the diameter of the pupil, respectively. On the other hand, among the tributaries within a river system, a significant difference was occurred in the mean number of anal fin rays, pored scales on the lateral line, gill rakers, vertebrae, pyloric caeca, white spots under the lateral line, white spots on the surface of the gill covers and the proportion of the diameter of the white spots to the diameter of the pupil, respectively. A dendrogram based on data of the meristic and morphometric characters showed that the population of the Tone River was included within the variation detected among the tributary populations of the Naka River. Meristic and morphometric characters of Japanese charr varied not only between river systems but also among tributaries within a river system.  相似文献

Meristic trait variation among species and populations has long been used as the basis for identification and classification of fishes. Within Oncorhynchus mykiss, there is considerable variation in meristic characters such as numbers of vertebrae, lateral line scales, fin rays, gill rakers, and pyloric caeca. In our laboratory the Oregon State University (OSU) rainbow trout and the Clearwater River (CW) steelhead trout clonal lines, produced by androgenesis, exhibit significant differences in values for meristic traits, making quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis of these meristic characters possible. Our objective was to determine the number, location, and effects of QTL associated with meristic characters in order to test two hypotheses: (1) that QTL for different meristic traits co-localize to the same linkage group and (2) that meristic trait QTL co-localize to the same linkage group as a previously identified development rate QTL. Doubled haploid individuals, produced by androgenesis from sperm from an F1 hybrid between the OSU and CW lines, were used to evaluate the joint segregation of each meristic phenotype and Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphic marker genotypes. Composite interval mapping revealed QTL for six of the seven traits analyzed. One QTL each for scales above the lateral line and for gill rakers co-localized to the same position. Only one QTL for scales above the lateral line co-localized to the same region as that for the development rate QTL, but a greater map resolution is necessary to determine if these loci are truly the same. We failed to detect pleiotropy for most meristic trait QTL. Our results suggest that different major loci are associated with variation in each meristic character and that the expression of these loci may be influenced by maternal and external environmental factors.  相似文献

The occurrence of post-F1 generation hybrids between common bream and roach in natural populations has still to be qualified. To do this, common bream, roach, F1 and F2 hybrid progeny were produced under controlled conditions. All progeny groups exhibited overlaps in the ranges of their meristic characters. Discriminant analysis of meristic data combined with allozymes allowed identification of post-Fl hybrids. Enzyme electrophoresis showed Fl progeny to be heterozygous at diagnostic loci. Back-crossed F2 progeny had a mixture of homozygosity and heterozygosity at diagnostic loci. Meristic and genetic analysis of fish from a natural population indicated that they were all F1 hybrids. Post-Fl hybridization cannot be ruled out from natural populations because Fl hybrids are known to be fertile. It is suggested that post-Fl hybrids were not detected either because of their low incidence of occurrence or due to biological phenomenon Such as inferior fitness.  相似文献

A compilation of studies using RAPD markers for evaluating population differentiation resulted in 78 estimates of AMOVA-derived ΦST and 31 estimates of Nei's GST, as well as in 41 estimates of Nei's within-population diversity. In outcrossing taxa, estimates of between-population diversity were closely correlated with maximum geographic distance between sampled populations. A corresponding association was not found in selfing taxa. These results suggest that RAPD can be a sensitive method for detection of genetic structuring according to the isolation-by-distance model. However, it also means that sampling strategies, as applied in individual studies, can seriously influence the resulting estimates of between-population diversity. Other sampling strategies, like number of plants per population and number of scored polymorphic markers, do not seem to impart any serious artefacts. As previously verified with allozyme data, RAPD markers showed that long-lived, outcrossing, late successional taxa retain most of their genetic variability within populations. By contrast, annual, selfing and/or early successional taxa allocate most of the genetic variability among populations. Estimates for between- and within-population diversity, respectively, proved to be negatively correlated, as previously reported for allozyme data. The only major discrepancy between allozymes and RAPD markers concerns geographic range; within-population diversity was strongly affected by distributional range of the investigated species in the allozyme data but not in the RAPD data. Moreover, RAPD-based values for between-population diversity increased with increasing distributional range whereas the opposite has been reported in a large allozyme data compilation. Contrary to allozymes, RAPD marker-derived within-population diversity is probably therefore not a very good predictor of total species genetic diversity.  相似文献

To exam whether the temperature experienced by fishes at early developmental stages can influence their phenotype at subsequent stages, the model species used, European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax was subjected to water temperatures of 15 or 20° C during the half-epiboly stage until the metamorphosis. Meristic and morphometric characters at three different stages, well after the end of the thermal treatments, were explored. Body shape and most of the meristic characters were significantly affected by the environmental temperature during their early life stages. Fish body shape at 15° C tended to be more slender than at 20° C. The dorsal spines and soft rays, the pectoral lepidotrichia and caudal dermatotrichia were significantly affected. Phenotypic differences due to the two thermal regimes are discussed in terms of their functional meaning during the transition from the planktonic to the littoral niche.  相似文献

Synopsis Sixteen meristic characters were examined among 10 stocks of rainbow trout to establish their inter- and intrastock variability and relative discriminating power. The number of vertebrae, dorsal fin rays, scales above and below and lateral line, oblique scale rows and pectoral fin rays were found to be the most useful meristic characters in identifying stocks. Examination of the extent of meristic divergence among 10 hatchery or naturalized stocks from various regions of the world, using analysis of variance, the generalized distance function and per cent overlap, revealed that each stock exhibited highly significant differences in at least one meristic character, thereby demonstrating a high degree of intraspecific variability in meristic expression. In multivariate terms, stocks from Idaho and Alaska were almost totally divergent from all other stocks examined. Multivariate analysis of meristic features proves to be a useful method for identifying the extent of phenotypic variability among and within divergent stocks of rainbow trout. The observed meristic variability in test stocks of hatchery fish is seemingly genetically set within the limits previously described for native populations of rainbow trout.  相似文献

Meristic variation among stocks of greater lizardfish Saurida tumbil through the western coasts of the Arabian Gulf and Sea of Oman was examined using meristic characters. Statistical analysis of meristic traits proposed that there is constrained migration of populations of greater lizardfish along the western coast of the Arabian Gulf and Sea of Oman. Overlapping of the two samples from the northern part of the Arabian Gulf (Iraq-Kuwait waters), three samples from the middle region of the Arabian Gulf (Bahrain-Qatar-Saudi Arabia) and two samples from the southern part of the Arabian Gulf/Sea of Oman (United Arab Emirates–Sultanate of Oman) suggested that there are three self-recruiting populations in the studied area. Inspection of the role of each meristic trait variable to Canonical discriminant analysis showed that changes among samples appeared to be linked with the pattern of distribution of water temperature and configuration of current in both the Arabian Gulf and Sea of Oman areas.  相似文献

The present investigation examines the role of genetic constraints in shaping evolutionary change in the Nigella arvensis species complex. Parent-offspring analyses of two populations of N. degenii demonstrated high heritabilities for a wide range of vegetative and floral characters, indicating a great potential for further adaptive change. The populations differed significantly in the heritability for leaf length and in the genetic correlation between plant height and peduncle length, suggesting that these populations would respond differently to identical selection pressures. There was a tendency for large-scale diversity to extrapolate within-population variability, at least for the floral trait associations, while genetic data from a segregating F3 hybrid population indicated stability in the correlation structure across two environments. On the basis of hybrid data, I propose that inbreeding effects and pleiotropic relationships with leaf size may have facilitated the reduction in floral morphology accompanying the evolution of autogamy in related taxa.  相似文献

We examined the effects of size and spatial isolation of fens on the isozyme variability of 17 populations of Swertia perennis. This long-lived perennial is a locally abundant fen specialist in Switzerland, where wetlands have been strongly fragmented. Isozyme variability was comparable to other outcrossing plants (A = 1.53, AP(p) = 2.01, P(p) = 42.5, H(o) = 0.113, H(e) = 0.139). F statistics indicated both inbreeding within and differentiation between populations (F(IS) = 0.076, F(IT) = 0.194, F(ST) = 0.128), with moderate gene flow between populations (N(e)m = 1.703). Populations in small, isolated fens had reduced genetic variability and the highest within-population inbreeding coefficients (F(IS)). Isozyme variability was significantly associated with vegetative fitness traits (MANOVA), and the magnitude of leaf herbivory decreased as the percentage of polymorphic loci increased. These data suggest that the reduced genetic variability of S. perennis in small, isolated populations may reduce plant fitness, thereby increasing susceptibility to herbivore damage. Our study also shows that habitat fragmentation can reduce the genetic variability of populations of fairly common habitat specialists, which so far have attracted less conservation attention than rare species.  相似文献

Genetic diversity within and among populations was investigated using RAPD-PCR assays in a rare species, Afgekia sericea Craib. Two hundred and sixty-nine individuals were sampled from nine geographically isolated populations from northeastern Thailand. This study includes 73 RAPD markers. Within population polymorphism as measured by percentage of polymorphic RAPDs, varied between 38.4% and 60.3%. Genetic variability was measured using Shannon's information index and partitioned into between- and within-population components. Overall, genetic variation among A. sericea populations was high (Hsp-Hpop)/Hsp=48.2%. The genetic diversity for the species (Hsp) was 43.2%. Mean of within-population values (Hpop) for all populations was 0.224. The total genetic diversity was explained by high variation among populations (mean Gst=0.426), which is consistent with low gene flow among populations (Nm=0.35). High between-population genetic variation observed in this study could be explained by limited migration through seed and/or pollen dispersal among populations. Conservation strategies of A. sericea are discussed in the context of these results. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Meristic identification, mitochondrial DNA and a suite of microsatellite markers were employed to estimate the incidence of hybridization in wild populations of anadromous Allis shad Alosa alosa and twaite shad Alosa fallax in southern Irish riverine and estuarine waters. It was shown that 16% of the fishes examined were misclassified using meristic count of gill rakers. Next, a significant proportion of fishes that were robustly assigned to a species using nuclear markers were shown to possess the mtDNA of the other. The genomes of A. alosa and A. fallax in Ireland are extensively introgressed, which suggests a complex history of hybridization between these species, which can only partially be explained by recent man-made habitat changes.  相似文献

The Chirostoma "humboldtianum" group includes seven silverside species considered as a monophyletic assemblage because of their high genetic and morphological similarities. The group includes five moderately large species, "peces blancos" (117-300 mm standard length--SL) and two smaller species, "charales" (70-142 mm SL). These species are of great economical, cultural and ichthyological interest for local populations, and their management practices are controversial. We investigated the morphometric, meristic and allozyme variations of the seven species (13 populations) and related the variations with life history, habitat and management procedures. Nineteen morphometric variables, eight meristic variables (by multivariate analysis) and 23 allozyme loci of the seven species and populations of Chirostoma were compared. Principal component analysis (PC) of morphometric and meristic data indicate that both sets of data provided information to differentiate among the seven species. The variables that accounted for most of this differentiation were head length (HL), predorsal 1 length (PIL) and length of pelvic fin base (PfbL). PC and Discriminant Analysis (DA) with morphometric data also suggested the differentiation of populations within C. grandocule (83% correctly classified organisms), whereas PC and DA with meristic data differentiated populations of C. humboldtianum (80% correctly classified organisms). The most important morphometric variables for the differentiation were anal fin height (AfH), length of anal fin base (AfbL) and predorsal 2 length (P2L) and the meristic variables D2fR. PdS and AfR. The genetic variability data indicate changes in values of some of the species in relation to previously reported data. The present populations of C. grandocule show a reduction in He (0.002 vs. 0.009). Other species showed an increase; for instance, C. consocium consocium, C. humboldtianum, C. lucius, C. promelas and C. sphyraena averaged He = 0.069 vs 0.027. theta indicated significant genetic differentiation among the analysed species (0.247, S.D. 0.159) and theta s supported the morphological data that suggest intra-specific differentiation (0.360, S. D. 0.154).  相似文献

Several characteristics of habitats of herbivores and their food-plant communities, such as plant-species composition and plant quality, influence population genetics of both herbivores and their host plants. We investigated how different ecological and geographic factors affect genetic variation in and differentiation of 23 populations of the oligophagous seed predator Lygaeus equestris (Heteroptera) in southwestern Finland and in eastern Sweden. We tested whether genetic differentiation of the L. equestris populations was related to the similarity of vegetation, and whether there was more within-population genetic variation in habitats with a high number of plant species or in those with a large population of the primary food plant, Vincetoxicum hirundinaria. We also tested whether genetic differentiation of the populations was related to the geographic distance, and whether location of the populations on islands or on mainland, island size, or population size affected within-population genetic variation. Pairwise FST ranged from 0 to 0.1 indicating low to moderate genetic differentiation of populations. Differentiation increased with geographic distance between the populations, but was not related to the similarity of vegetation between the habitats. Genetic variation within the L. equestris populations did not increase with the population size of the primary food plant. However, the more diverse the plant community the higher was the level of genetic variation within the L. equestris population. Furthermore, the level of genetic variation did not vary significantly between island and mainland populations. The effect of the population size on within-population genetic variation was related to island size. Usually small populations are susceptible to loss of genetic variation, but small L. equestris populations on large islands seemed to maintain a relatively high level of within-population genetic variation. Our findings suggest that, in addition to geographic and species-specific ecological factors, the plant community affects population genetic structure of oligophagous herbivores.  相似文献

A morphometric truss network system and meristic counts were used to investigate the hypothesis of population fragmentation of pikeperch Sander lucioperca among four major fishing areas in the Caspian Sea drainage. Univariate analysis of variance showed significant differences between the means of the four groups for 20 out of 32 standardized morphometric measurements (27 truss, five traditional characters) and six out of nine meristic counts. The first two canonical discriminant functions accounted for 93 and 92.3% of the total variability in morphometric and meristic characteristics, respectively. A dendogram derived from cluster analysis of Mahalanobis distances and a discriminant analysis among the groups confirmed three distinct populations in these regions, while there was a relatively high degree of overlap between all locations when using meristic characters. The most relevant morphometric characteristics were the measured distances on body heights and the caudal peduncle area. This study indicated that the morphometric truss network system was more adequate than meristic characters for separation among the populations.  相似文献

Crosses between plants from different populations may result in heterosis or outbreeding depression. However, despite its importance for conservation, little is known about the spatial scale over which these effects may arise. To investigate the consequences of between-population crosses at two distinct spatial scales, we conducted reciprocal crosses between four populations from two regions in the rare perennial herb Aster amellus . We assessed seed set and offspring fitness in a common garden experiment. Overall, between-population crosses within regions (10 km) resulted in 8% lower seed set than within-population crosses, while between-region crosses (70 km) resulted in 17% higher seed set than within-population crosses. Moreover, offspring from between-population crosses produced 18% more flower heads than offspring from within-population crosses. We conclude that hybridisation between A. amellus plants from different populations did not lead to immediate outbreeding depression and, thus, could represent a valid conservation option to increase genetic diversity. Moreover, our results suggest that the distance between populations affects the outputs of between-population crosses and therefore needs to be taken into account when promoting gene flow between populations.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the relative roles of population size and geographic isolation in determining population-genetic structure. Using electrophoretic techniques to quantify allozymic variation at 16 genetic loci, we measured genic variation within and among 16 natural populations of the California fan palm (Washingtonia filifera). Genotypes were determined for every individual in each population so that parametric values rather than sample estimates for measures of genic variability were obtained. Palm populations displayed low levels of within-population variability. The proportion of polymorphic loci and observed heterozygosity were 0.098 and 0.009 per population, respectively. Population size displayed a significant positive correlation with proportion of polymorphic loci, but not with observed heterozygosity. Low levels of genetic differentiation among populations were demonstrated by an F-statistic analysis and the computation of genetic similarity values. A hierarchical analysis of gene diversity revealed that only about 2% of the total gene diversity in W. filifera resides as among-population diversity. Climatic and geological changes since the Pliocene have eliminated widespread palm populations, and the species is presently restricted to isolated locations around the Colorado Desert. Existing populations in southern California are either relicts or recent recolonizations resulting from the dispersal of seeds from a refugium population in Baja California, Mexico. The observed patterns of low within- and low among-population genic diversity seem most consistent with a recent colonization by fan palms. It is hypothesized that stochastic processes reduced levels of genic variability in this refugium population during its formation. Dispersal of seeds from this refugium into suitable habitats in the Colorado Desert would produce populations with low variability and high genetic similarity because of their common ancestry. However, low intrapopulation variability and genetic homogeneity across populations could be the product of uniform selection pressures favoring a narrow array of specialized genotypes in either relict or colonizing populations.  相似文献

Ambrosia artemisiifolia is an aggressive North American annual weed, found particularly in sunflower and corn fields. Besides its economic impact on crop yield, it represents a major health problem because of its strongly allergenic pollen. Ragweed was imported inadvertently to Europe in the 18th century and has become invasive in several countries, notably in the Rhône Valley of France. It has recently expanded in both the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur and Bourgogne regions. As first steps towards understanding the causes and mechanisms of ragweed invasion, genetic variability of French and North American populations was analysed using microsatellites. Overall genetic variability was similar in North America and in the Rhône-Alpes region, but within-population levels of genetic variability were surprisingly lower in native than in invasive French populations. French populations also exhibited lower among-population differentiation. A significant pattern of isolation by distance was detected among North American populations but not among French populations. Assignment tests and distribution of rare alleles did not point to a single origin for all French populations, nor for all individuals within populations and private alleles from different North American populations were found in the same French populations. Indeed, within all French populations, individual plants were roughly equally assigned to the different North American populations. Altogether, these results suggest that the French invasive populations include plants from a mixture of sources. Reduced diversity in populations distant from the original area of introduction indicated that ragweed range expansion probably occurred through sequential bottlenecks from the original populations, and not from subsequent new introductions.  相似文献

In the marine environment, differential gene exchange between partially reproductively isolated taxa can result in introgression that extends over long distances due to high larval dispersal potential. However, the degree to which this process contributes to interlocus variance of genetic differentiation within introgressed populations remains unclear. Using a genome-scan approach in the Indo-Pacific eel Anguilla marmorata, we investigated the degree of interpopulation genetic differentiation, the rate of introgression, and within-population genetic patterns at 858 AFLP markers genotyped in 1117 individuals. Three divergent populations were identified based on clustering analysis. Genetic assignments of individuals revealed the existence of different types of hybrids that tended to co-occur with parental genotypes in three population contact zones. Highly variable levels of genetic differentiation were found between populations across the AFLP markers, and reduced rates of introgression were shown at some highly differentiated loci. Gene flow across semipermeable genetic barriers was shown to generate spatial introgression patterns at some loci which define within-population structure over long distances. These results suggest that differential introgression in subdivided populations may be relevant when interpreting spatial variation patterns displayed by outlying loci in other marine fish populations.  相似文献
