Mass balances of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were calculated for Lake Verevi (area 0.126 km2, maximum depth 11 m, mean depth 3.6 m), a sharply stratified small lake located in South Estonia within the borders of the town Elva. The lake has up to 10 small inflows but only three of them are nearly permanent. Accidental overflows from near-by oxidation ponds during high floods have been the major source of the nutrient load of the lake in the past. L. Verevi receives a significant part of its inflow from groundwater, which is difficult to measure. In dry years the outflow is temporary. During summer the lake is sharply thermally and chemically stratified. The spring turnover is often incomplete even in homothermal conditions, thus giving the lake some meromictic features. The influx of nitrogen exceeded the outflux at any supposed proportion (20%, 50%, 80%) of surface runoff. The lake retained 45–90% of the nitrogen influx by sedimentation and/or by denitrification. The largest nitrogen losses with loss rates more than 10 kg N d−1 occurred in May and June. The calculated phosphorus retention rate became strongly negative during mixing periods. From June to November, phosphorus release from the sediment exceeded sedimentation by 205 kg in 1991 and by 79 kg in 1993. Earlier stagnation and absence of a full spring turnover in the 2000 has slowed down the recovery of the lake because less phosphorus is flushed out. However, the stronger stratification and significantly smaller phosphorus content in the epilimnion limits biological activity and as a result improves the water quality of the surface layer.  相似文献

Advances in genetic engineering have led to the synthesis of protein-based block copolymers with control of chemistry and molecular weight, resulting in unique physical and biological properties. The benefits from incorporating peptide blocks into copolymer designs arise from the fundamental properties of proteins to adopt ordered conformations and to undergo self-assembly, providing control over structure formation at various length scales when compared to conventional block copolymers. Ion and acid–base balance were examined in the freshwater-adapted mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) using a series of treatments designed to perturb the coupling mechanisms. Unidirectional Cl uptake (JClin) was extremely low whereas JNain was substantial (three- to sixfold higher); comparable differences occurred in unidirectional efflux rates (JClout, JNaout). JClin was refractory to all treatments, suggesting that Cl/base exchange was unimportant or absent. Indeed, no base excretion or modulation of ion fluxes occurred for acid–base balance for up to 8 h after NaHCO3 loading (injections of 1000 or 3000 nequiv.·g−1). Acute environmental low pH (4.5) and amiloride (10−4 M) treatments caused concurrent inhibition of JNain and net H+ excretion (JH+net), indicating the presence of Na+/H+ exchange. JNain was elevated and JH+net restored during recovery from both treatments, but this exchange did not appear to be dynamically adjusted for acid–base homeostasis. High external ammonia exposure (1 mmol·l−1) initially blocked ammonia excretion (JAmmnet) but had no effect on JNain, whereas high pH (9.4) reduced both JAmmnet and JNain. Inhibition of JNain by the low pH and amiloride treatments had no effect on JAmmnet. These results indicate that ammonia excretion is entirely diffusive and independent of both Na+uptake and the protons that are transported via the Na+/H+ coupling. In addition, ureagenesis served as a compensatory mechanism during high external ammonia exposure, as a marked elevation in urea excretion partially replaced the inhibited JAmmnet. In all treatments, changes in the Na+–Cl net flux differential were consistent with changes in JH+net measured by traditional water titration techniques, indicating that the former can be used as an estimate of the acid–base status of the fish. Overall, the results demonstrate that the freshwater-adapted F. heteroclitus does not conform to the ion/acid–base relationships described in the standard model based on commonly studied species such as trout, goldfish, and catfish.  相似文献

Fertilization potentials in Pelvetia fastigiata, Fucus vesiculosus, and Fucus ceranoides were studied to examine whether eggs of fucoid algae have an electrical block against polyspermy. The resting potential of eggs of all species was about -60 mV, depolarizing, respectively, to -24 +/- 5 mV (SD, n = 9) for 7.5 +/- 2.1 (n = 8) min, -26 +/- 5 (n = 9) mV for 6.4 +/- 2.3 (n = 9) min, and -24 +/- 6 (n = 5) mV for 6.7 +/- 1.9 (n = 4) min. The depolarization was slower, and the fertilization potential was about 10 mV more negative in eggs of both F. vesiculosus and Pelvetia fertilized in 45-mM Na+ ASW; many of these eggs were polyspermic. Steady current was passed through unfertilized eggs of F. vesiculosus prior to insemination to test the potential dependence of fertilization. Eggs (n = 10) bound sperm at all potentials tested (-45 to -23 mV), but fertilization was prevented if eggs were held at potentials more positive than -45 to -37 mV. Eggs underwent a second depolarization if artificially hyperpolarized to potentials more negative than -50 mV immediately after the rise of a normal fertilization potential. Thus, fucoid eggs have an electrical fast block against polyspermy. Only in F. ceranoides does the formation of the cell wall after fertilization appear to be fast enough (i.e., 3-6 min postfertilization versus at 10-15 min in F. vesiculosus and P. fastigiata) to replace the fertilization potential as a polyspermy block. Nonfertilizing fucoid sperm swim away from the egg surface by 1-3 min after rise of the fertilization potential. This suggests that there is another "intermediate block" against polyspermy.  相似文献
