Iron stores were evaluated by serum ferritin determinations in 948 menstruating and 141 non-menstruating female blood donors. Blood donation was associated with a decrease in ferritin. First-time donors (n = 163) had a geometric mean ferritin of 24 micrograms/l and multiple-time donors a value of 19 micrograms/l (p less than 0.01). In the donating population 31.5% had ferritin values less than 15 micrograms/l (i.e. depleted iron stores). Menstruating donors had lower mean serum ferritin than non-menstruating donors (p less than 0.001), and a higher frequency of ferritin values less than 15 micrograms/l (p less than 0.05). There was no relationship between ferritin levels and the number of pregnancies. The frequency of donations was more predictive of ferritin levels than the number of donations. Mean ferritin displayed a moderate fall up to the 2nd donation, and was hereafter relatively constant, whereas an increase in donation frequency was accompanied by a significant decrease in ferritin. Female donors, especially when phlebotomised greater than or equal to 3 times per year, should have their iron status checked at appropriate intervals by measurement of serum ferritin and should be advised regular iron supplementation.  相似文献

Aging, independently from the hormonal status, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity in healthy women. Therefore, we studied the effect of healthy aging on the cardiovascular homeostatic mechanisms in premenopausal and postmenopausal women with similar estrogen levels. Twelve healthy postmenopausal women, confirmed by follicular-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteal hormone (LH) levels, were compared with 14 normally menstruating women during the early follicular phase (young-EF), to avoid as much as possible the effects of estrogen. Systolic BP was 108 +/- 1.5 vs. 123 +/- 2.5 (P < 0.001), supine norepinephrine was 260 +/- 30 vs. 216 +/- 45 and upright 640 +/- 100 vs. 395 +/- 50 pg/ml (P = 0.05) in young-EF vs. postmenopausal, respectively. Plasma renin activity and aldosterone remained unchanged. Vagal cardiac tone indices decreased significantly with aging (young-EF vs. postmenopausal): high-frequency (HF) band, root mean square successive differences (rMSSD) and proportion of R-R intervals >50 ms (PNN50%) were 620 +/- 140 vs. 270 +/- 70 (P = 0.04), 53 +/- 7 vs. 30 +/- 3 (P = 0.02), and 23 +/- 5 vs. 10 +/- 3 (P = 0.04), respectively. LF to HF ratio was 0.85 +/- 0.17 in young-EF and became 1.5 +/- 0.22 in postmenopausal (P = 0.03). Both arms of the baroreflex, +BRS (29 +/- 5 vs. 13.5 +/- 2.5, P = 0.01) and -BRS (26 +/- 4 vs. 15 +/- 1.5, P = 0.02) decreased with aging. Cardiovascular alpha(1)-adrenoreceptor responsiveness significantly increased and beta-decreased in postmenopausal compared with young EF (P < 0.001, both). The corrected QT intervals (QTc) were similar, whereas corrected JT intervals (JTc) and JTc to QTc ratio were prolonged in the postmenopausal group. We conclude that in young women, parasympathetic control is the main regulator of the cardiovascular system and in postmenopausal women, sympathetic tone dominates. The transition from parasympathetic to sympathetic control may contribute to the increased cardiovascular morbidity with aging.  相似文献

Levels of exposure to ionizing radiation are increasing for women worldwide due to the widespread use of CT and other radiologic diagnostic modalities. Exposure to ionizing radiation as well as increased levels of estradiol and other sex hormones are acknowledged breast cancer risk factors, but the effects of whole-body radiation on serum hormone levels in cancer-free women are unknown. This study examined whether ionizing radiation exposure is associated with levels of serum hormones and other markers that may mediate radiation-associated breast cancer risk. Serum samples were measured from cancer-free women who attended biennial health examinations with a wide range of past radiation exposure levels (N = 412, ages 26-79). The women were selected as controls for separate case-control studies from a cohort of A-bomb survivors. Outcome measures included serum levels of total estradiol, bioavailable estradiol, testosterone, progesterone, prolactin, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF1), insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3), and ferritin. Relationships were assessed using repeated-measures regression models fitted with generalized estimating equations. Geometric mean serum levels of total estradiol and bioavailable estradiol increased with 1?Gy of radiation dose among samples collected from postmenopausal women (17%(1Gy), 95% CI: 1%-36% and 21%(1Gy), 95% CI: 4%-40%, respectively), while they decreased in samples collected from premenopausal women (-11%(1Gy), 95% CI: -20%-1% and -12%(1Gy), 95% CI: -20%- -2%, respectively). Interactions by menopausal status were significant (P = 0.003 and P < 0.001, respectively). Testosterone levels increased with radiation dose in postmenopausal samples (30.0%(1Gy), 95% CI: 13%-49%) while they marginally decreased in premenopausal samples (-10%(1Gy), 95% CI: -19%-0%) and the interaction by menopausal status was significant (P < 0.001). Serum levels of IGF1 increased linearly with radiation dose (11%(1Gy), 95% CI: 2%-18%) and there was a significant interaction by menopausal status (P = 0.014). Radiation-associated changes in serum levels of estradiol, bioavailable estradiol, testosterone and IGF1 were modified by menopausal status at the time of collection. No associations with radiation were observed in serum levels of progesterone, prolactin, IGFBP-3 or ferritin.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To analyze cytomorphologically the buccal mucosa of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). STUDY DESIGN: Brush biopsies were obtained from 10 patients with AD and 9 age-matched controls without neurologic symptoms from 3 distinct oral sites. RESULTS: A significant reduction in partially keratinized intermediate (red) cells was observed in the buccal mucosa of the AD group. In the AD group, parabasal cells from the floor of the mouth (p = 0.017) and buccal mucosa (p = 0.058) and red cells,from the tongue dorsum (p = 0.013) and buccal mucosa (p = 0.002), exhibited significantly greater nuclear areas. With regard to the nuclear to cytoplasmic (N:C) ratio, intermediate (red) cells from the buccal mucosa and tongue dorsum of AD individuals showed a decrease in this parameter (p <0.0001), while superficial (yellow) cells (from buccal mucosa) (p= 0.042) and parabasal (blue) cells (from the tongue dorsum) (p = 0.003) exhibited an increased N:C ratio. No significant differences were detected in the cells from the floor of the mouth. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that cytologic and cytometric changes were detectable in the exfoliative cytology of the buccal mucosa and tongue in the AD group.  相似文献

A possible epithelial-mesenchymal interaction in determining epithelial histologic features of human oral mucosa was examined. The study comprised 74 biopsies of normal buccal mucosa and 54 biopsies of normal palatal mucosa. Epithelium was separated from connective tissue by the use of 1 mM ethylenediamine tetraacetate dihydrate. Self-recombined and cross-recombined epithelial and connective tissues and connective tissue sheets alone were transplanted to subcutaneous sites of nude mice. Histologic examination of cross-recombined palatal epithelium/buccal connective tissue transplants showed a change in keratinization pattern but no major change in number of epithelial cell layers as the result of connective tissue influence. Transplanted sheets of connective tissue after growth for 14 days showed that complete separation of biopsies from buccal mucosa had been obtained. However, palatal mucosa had been incompletely separated as evidenced by re-epithelialization of most of the connective tissue transplants. The consequences of the incomplete palatal epithelium-connective tissue separation are discussed.  相似文献

Background:

The true benefit of iron supplementation for nonanemic menstruating women with fatigue is unknown. We studied the effect of oral iron therapy on fatigue and quality of life, as well as on hemoglobin, ferritin and soluble transferrin receptor levels, in nonanemic iron-deficient women with unexplained fatigue.

Methods:

We performed a multicentre, parallel, randomized controlled, closed-label, observer-blinded trial. We recruited from the practices of 44 primary care physicians in France from March to July 2006. We randomly assigned 198 women aged 18–53 years who complained of fatigue and who had a ferritin level of less than 50 ug/L and hemoglobin greater than 12.0 g/dL to receive either oral ferrous sulfate (80 mg of elemental iron daily; n = 102) or placebo (n = 96) for 12 weeks. The primary outcome was fatigue as measured on the Current and Past Psychological Scale. Biological markers were measured at 6 and 12 weeks.

Results:

The mean score on the Current and Past Psychological Scale for fatigue decreased by 47.7% in the iron group and by 28.8% in the placebo group (difference –18.9%, 95% CI −34.5 to −3.2; p = 0.02), but there were no significant effects on quality of life (p = 0.2), depression (p = 0.97) or anxiety (p = 0.5). Compared with placebo, iron supplementation increased hemoglobin (0.32 g/dL; p = 0.002) and ferritin (11.4 μg/L; p < 0.001) and decreased soluble transferrin receptor (−0.54 mg/L; p < 0.001) at 12 weeks.

Interpretation:

Iron supplementation should be considered for women with unexplained fatigue who have ferritin levels below 50 μg/L. We suggest assessing the efficiency using blood markers after six weeks of treatment. Trial registration no. EudraCT 2006–000478–56.The prevalence of fatigue ranges from 14% to 27% among patients in primary care.1 In addition, 1%–2% of visits to general practices are because of fatigue, and women are three times more likely than men to mention fatigue.1 Unexplained fatigue can be caused by iron deficiency.2 Verdon and coauthors found an improvement in fatigue following iron supplementation in nonanemic women with unexplained fatigue.3 However, the hemoglobin levels of these patients were not available, which may have contributed to the ongoing debate about the appropriateness of reference limits defining anemia in women.4,5 Thus, the effectiveness of iron supplementation in nonanemic menstruating women with major fatigue without an obvious clinical cause is unknown.6 Our main objective was to test the hypothesis that oral iron therapy for a short period may improve fatigue, hemoglobin, iron stores and quality of life in menstruating nonanemic women whose ferritin levels are below 50 μg/L. Our secondary objective was to evaluate whether this effect is dependent on the initial levels of hemoglobin, ferritin or transferrin saturation.  相似文献

The primary sites for occurrence of oral cancer include the buccal mucosa, tongue, alveolus, palate, lip and the floor of the mouth. In this study, an attempt was made to estimate the cytogenetic damage in different regions of the oral mucosa in people habituated to smoking beedi,which is one of the major forms of tobacco consumption in India and believed to be a major risk factor for oral cancer. By using the micronucleus assay on exfoliated cells from the buccal mucosa, palate and tongue of beedi smokers, we examined an early cellular response to the effect of beedi smoking. A total number of 50 randomly selected male subjects were included in the study. Case and control groups (smokers and non-smokers, respectively) comprised 25 subjects each. The difference in mean micronucleated cell count between cases and controls was significant (P <0.01) for buccal mucosa and palate, but not for tongue. The correlation between age and micronucleus cell count was weak for both cases (r=0.27) and controls (r=0.36).  相似文献

Decreased bone density has been reported in women with hyperprolactinaemia due to pituitary tumours. We identified a number of seemingly healthy women with hyperprolactinaemia, i.e. a serum prolactin concentration exceeding 500 mU/l (25 micrograms/l) on three occasions, during a study in 1980/1981 of a representative population sample of greater than 1,400 women in seven different age strata (range 26-72 years). We compared vertebral bone mineral content and bone mineral areal content in 5 hyperprolactinaemic normally menstruating 50-year-old women with that of 6 controls matched for age and menstrual status but found no difference. Since the degree of prolactin elevation was similar in our study group to that previously reported for hyperprolactinaemic subjects with pituitary tumours and the time of exposure to raised hormone concentration appears to be of the same magnitude, other hormonal changes than hyperprolactinaemia per se seem to be the cause of low bone mineral content in women with hyperprolactinaemia and amenorrhoea.  相似文献

Seventy-five menstruating women seeking contraceptive advice were randomly allocated to treatment with combined oral contraceptives containing either ethinyl estradiol 50 micrograms + levonorgestrel 250 micrograms (50/250), ethinyl estradiol 30 micrograms + levonorgestrel 150 micrograms (30/150) or ethinyl estradiol 50 micrograms + levonorgestrel 125 micrograms (50/125). The concentrations of cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids, high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and HDL-phospholipids were determined after one, three and six months and compared to the mean of two determinations of the same parameters before medication. Triglycerides increased by 18--42 per cent after 1--6 months of treatment with 50/125. The HDL-cholesterol and HDL-phospholipids were reduced by 10 per cent during 50/250 treatment. No other parameters showed any consistent alteration in any of the treatment groups. Raised triglyceride concentration and/or decreased HDL concentration increases the risk for cardiovascular disease. It is therefore suggested that in order not to alter the HDL concentration a combined oral contraceptive agent should not contain more gestagen-androgen than corresponding to 125--150 micrograms of levonorgestrel. To avoid a rise of the triglyceride level the weight relation between levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol should be about 5:1.  相似文献

The radioimmunoassay of alpha-subunit adapted in our laboratory was widely evaluated. Three different antisera (anti-pituitary alpha-subunit, anti-alpha-TSH and anti-alpha-hCG), the labelled preparations of pituitary alpha-subunit and alpha-hCG, and cross-reactivity with intact glycoprotein hormones (MRC standards of LH, FSH, hCG and TSH) were tested for their potential influence on the results of the assay. The basal levels of alpha-subunit were measured in 48 healthy young men, 48 normally menstruating women, 33 menopausal women, 37 pregnant women and 70 patients with pituitary adenoma. In addition a possibility of pulsatile secretion of alpha-subunit was investigated in 9 healthy young women, the ranges of alpha-subunit concentrations found were as follow (means +/- SD): 1.2 +/- 0.4 micrograms/l--in young men, 1.1 +/- 0.4 micrograms/l--in young women, 3.2 +/- 0.7 micrograms/l--in postmenopausal women, 1-54 micrograms/l--in pregnant women, and between 2.6 and 44.0 micrograms/l in 14 of 70 patients with pituitary adenoma. There were good correlations of results for 3 different antisera and their cross-reactivity with LH, FSH, hCG and TSH were just as low. In conclusion, the alpha-subunit assay appears clinically useful and should be widely applied in routine endocrinological diagnostics.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the cell proliferation rate and possible effects of cigarette smoking on the oral mucosa lining through analysis of silver-stained nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) in exfoliative cytology specimens. STUDY DESIGN: Exfoliative cytology was performed on the left side of the border of the tongue and of the floor of the mouth in 25 smoking patients and 25 nonsmoking patients. The inclusion criterion for smokers was the consumption of more than 20 cigarettes per day for a minimum of 30 years. RESULTS: The slides were stained by histochemical AgNOR method. In the nonsmoking group the mean number of AgNORs per nucleus was 2.732 +/- 0.236 in the tongue border and 2.918 +/- 0.195 in the floor of the mouth. In smoking patients the mean number of AgNORs per nucleus was 3.372 +/- 0.375 in the tongue border and 3.245 +/- 0.237 in the floor of the mouth. CONCLUSION: The results suggest higher cell proliferation quantified by the histochemical AgNOR technique in exfoliative cytology specimens obtained from the oral mucosa lining of smokers presenting no clinical alterations.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To analyze cytologically the buccal mucosa of smoking and nonsmoking volunteers to determine what cellular changes are induced by cigarettes and alcohol consumption. STUDY DESIGN: In order to evaluate cellular changes induced by smoking and alcohol consumption, exfoliative cytology was used for the analysis of mucosal smears obtained from the buccal mucosa of 25 smokers and 25 nonsmokers. The number of cigarettes consumed, duration of smoking, presence or absence of alcohol ingestion, ingested alcohol dose and frequency of consumption, and most frequently used type of alcoholic beverage were determined using a questionnaire. Three smears from each individual stained by the Papanicolaou method were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively under a light microscope by 2 experienced examiners in terms of inflammatory and dysplastic alterations and of the degree of epithelial maturation. RESULTS: Although numerous alterations were observed in smokers they corresponded up to only Papanicolaou class II and were not significantly different from nonsmokers (Mann-Whitney and chi2 tests, p < 0.05). A higher proportion of inflammatory cells (polymorphonuclear and mononuclear cells) were obtained from smokers as compared to nonsmokers, while the proportion of bacteria was similar in the 2 groups. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that even after a short period of cigarette use and alcohol consumption, inflammatory alterations were detectable on exfoliative cytology of the buccal mucosa in a young group, demonstrating the usefulness of cytology for early detection in smokers.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the argyrophilic nucleolar organizer region (AgNOR) count of cells collected from normal buccal mucosa of cigarette smokers with that obtained from nonsmokers. STUDY DESIGN: Cytologic smears of normal buccal mucosa from 20 smokers and 20 nonsmokers were stained for AgNORs. The AgNOR count was established on 100 cells. The count values of groups were compared and analyzed using Student's unpaired t test. RESULTS: The AgNORs were round and had a clustered distribution in both groups. The mean AgNOR count was statistically higher in cells of smokers than nonsmokers (P < .01). CONCLUSION: Analysis of AgNORs suggests that cigarette smoking influences proliferative activity in cells of normal buccal mucosa.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To analyze image cytometric chromatin changes reflected in nuclear texture features and DNA ploidy of oral lichen planus in relation to the normal buccal mucosa and buccal mucosa expressing malignancy-associated changes in cancer patients. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-eight patients with the reticular form of oral lichen planus, with a follow-up period of 25 years, 50 healthy controls and 50 lung cancer patients were included in the study. Scrapings of buccal mucosa were suspended in transport medium. Monolayer filter preparations were Feulgen-thionin stained. Image cytometric analysis was performed by Cyto-Savant. RESULTS: All oral lichen planus specimens in our study were diploid. In univariate analysis, differences between the normal buccal mucosa and oral lichen planus were found in several nuclear texture features, which gave an 80% correct classification rate in multivariate analysis. In the second part of the study, the classifier that recognizes malignancy-associated changes on the buccal mucosa of patients with lung cancer correctly recognized > 80% of oral lichen planus samples as normal buccal mucosa. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that chromatin changes in oral lichen planus exist compared to normal cells; however, the chromatin structure of the reticular form of oral lichen planus does not express malignancy-associated changes and is more similar to normal squamous cells.  相似文献

To evaluate the effect of menopausal status and body mass index (BMI) on circulating leptin and adiponectin concentrations and investigate whether there is an influence of menopausal transition on the relationships of these adipokines and leptin to adiponectin (L/A) ratio with lipid profile and insulin resistance in a sample of Tunisian women. One hundred ninety-six premenopausal (mean age 35.3 ± 7.6 years) and 180 postmenopausal women (mean age 53.4 ± 6.2 years) were included in the study. Participants were stratified into obese and normal weight groups based upon their baseline BMI. Fasting glucose, HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), insulin, leptin, and adiponectin concentrations were measured. Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated. Premenopausal women had significantly higher leptin and L/A ratio and lower adiponectin levels than postmenopausal women. Menopause had no effect on the mean values of BMI, insulin or HOMA-IR, HDL-C, and TG. Using a multiple linear regression model, menopausal status was identified, as significant independent predictor for leptin and adiponectin levels. Irrespective of the menopausal status, obese women exhibited higher leptin and L/A ratio and lower adiponectin levels compared to those with normal weight. Comparison between the two menopausal stages in obese and normal weight groups showed that leptin and L/A ratio decreased, while adiponectin increased from pre- to postmenopausal stage only in obese group. The L/A ratio correlated better with lipid profile and HOMA-IR in postmenopausal stage. The present study showed a significant interaction between menopause and BMI on leptin and adiponectin secretion. Menopausal transition affects the relationships of these adipokines with lipids and insulin resistance.  相似文献

BackgroundSerum ferritin levels increase in postmenopausal women, and they are reported to be linked to major health problems. Here, we investigated the association between serum ferritin levels and insulin resistance (IR) in postmenopausal women.MethodsA total of 6632 healthy Korean women (4357 premenopausal and 2275 postmenopausal) who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) in 2007–2010 were enrolled in the study. Serum ferritin values were divided into six groups for the premenopausal and postmenopausal groups. IR and obesity indices were evaluated according to the six serum ferritin groups. Statistical analysis was carried out using SAS software, version 9.2 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA).ResultsThe association between the IR indices and ferritin groups had a higher level of statistical significance in the postmenopausal group than in the premenopausal group. In addition, for the postmenopausal group, the estimates increased significantly in the sixth ferritin group compared to those in the first ferritin group. However, the association between the obesity indices and ferritin levels was not significantly different between the premenopausal and postmenopausal groups.ConclusionElevated serum ferritin levels were associated with an increased risk of insulin resistance in postmenopausal women.  相似文献

A comparative cytologic study was made of the hormonal content of the vaginal and oral mucosa of menopausal women. Twenty-three women between one and ten years (early menopause) and 33 patients more than ten years (late menopause) after cessation of menstruation had oral and vaginal smears taken. Comparable smears from 21 young women, and oral smears from 18 males served as controls. The smears were evaluated by the maturation value method, and averages were established for each group. The vaginal smears had low maturation values of 40 and 22 in the early and late menopausal groups, respectively. In these women, the buccal smears' maturation values were high, above 70. Similar high maturation values were found in buccal smears of the young women and men. It was concluded that the high maturation values found in the oral smears of the menopausal women are not the result of hormonal effect but that of local mechanisms or irritative factors.  相似文献

The aim of the present research was to investigate the changes of the sugar residues in the oviduct in the course of ageing in postmenopausal women vs normally menstruating women, by means of lectin histochemistry. Twenty asymptomatic postmenopausal women (48-83 years old) were recruited among patients who underwent a vaginal hysterectomy. Eight normally menstruating women were recruited as controls. Fragments of Fallopian tubes (pars ampullaris) were fixed in 10% formalin and routinely processed. The sections were labelled with HRP-lectins (PNA, SBA, DBA, WGA, Con A, LTA, UEAI). Some sections were pre-treated with neuraminidase prior to staining with HRP-lectins. Among the postmenopausal patients, our histochemical data showed that there was no difference in the localization and distribution of sugar residues of glycoconjugates as detected by various HRP-lectins. Moreover, our results demonstrated that the oviductal epithelium is characterized by apical reactivity in both ciliated and non-ciliated cells. In the course of ageing, the ciliated cells changed their morphology from bathyprismatic to large and rounded shape. ConA lectin reacted intensely with such highly degenerating ciliated cells and could be considered a marker of these cells. The degenerating ciliated cells are also characterized by the absence of sialic acid. In comparison with the sugar residues present in the control group, the oviductal epithelium of postmenopausal women is characterized by the loss of reactivity with DBA, WGA and ConA. Moreover, PNA reactive material was present at the free border of the ciliated and non-ciliated cells. The latter findings were statistically confirmed and could be considered strictly related to the ageing process.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of ultrasound-facilitated fixation on oral mucosal morphology. Bovine dorsal tongue and porcine buccal (cheek) mucosa were sonicated for 0, 5, 10 or 15 min in a modified methacarn fixative, then incubated at 25° C for 4 h. Initial mass, volume and density of each specimen were measured before and after treatment and fixation. Morphometric analysis of the scanning electron micrographs was used to quantify changes in mucosal structure and microtexture. Statistical methods were used to describe the relation between sonication time, tissue density and relative change in tissue density. Our results indicate a linear correlation between sonication time and density of the dorsal tongue specimens. The treatment caused contraction of the tongue tissue and expansion of the buccal mucosa. Differences between initial and final tongue densities and the relative change in tissue density of the tongue vs. buccal mucosa were statistically significant. Differences observed between initial and final buccal mucosa densities were not statistically significant. Changes in buccal mucosa density correlated inversely with sonication time by contrast to the tongue density, which was correlated directly with this factor. Our study illustrates that while preservation of mucosal morphology and biopolymers can be achieved by ultrasound-facilitated fixation, its effects on tissue density are both time-dependent and specific to certain regions of the mouth.  相似文献

Specific recommendations for anemic individuals consist in increasing red meat intake, but the population at large is advised to reduce consumption of red meat and increase that of fish, in order to prevent the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to determine the effects of consuming an oily fish compared to a red meat diet on iron status in women with low iron stores. The study was designed attending the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement guidelines. It was a randomised crossover dietary intervention study of two 8-week periods. Twenty-five young women with low iron stores completed the study. Two diets containing a total of 8 portions of fish, meat and poultry per week were designed differing only in their oily fish or red meat content (5 portions per week). At the beginning and the end of each period blood samples were taken and hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum ferritin, serum iron, serum transferrin, serum transferrin receptor-2 and the Zn-protoporphyrin/free-protoporphyrin ratio were determined. Food intake and body weight were monitored. During the oily fish diet, PUFA intake was significantly higher (p=0.010) and iron intake lower (mean±SD, 11.5±3.4 mg/dayvs. 13.9±0.1 mg/day, p=0.008), both diets providing lower mean daily iron intake than recommended for menstruating women. Although there were no significant differences after 16 weeks, serum ferritin moderately decreased and soluble transferrin receptor increased with the oily fish, while changes with the red meat diet were the opposite. In conclusion, an oily fish diet compared to a red meat diet does not decrease iron status after 8 weeks in iron deficient women.  相似文献
