Abstract:  Eshanosaurus deguchiianus is based on a single left dentary from the Lower Lufeng Formation (Lower Jurassic) of Yunnan Province, China. It was originally identified as the earliest known member of Therizinosauroidea (Theropoda: Coelurosauria), a conclusion that results in a significant downward range extension for this clade (>65 million years) and for many other major lineages within Coelurosauria. However, this interpretation has been questioned and several authors have proposed that the anatomical features used to refer Eshanosaurus to Therizinosauroidea are more consistent with attribution to a basal sauropodomorph dinosaur. Detailed consideration of the holotype specimen suggests that several features of the dentary and dentition exclude Eshanosaurus from Sauropodomorpha and support its inclusion within Therizinosauroidea. If accepted as an Early Jurassic coelurosaur, Eshanosaurus has important implications for understanding the timing and tempo of early theropod diversification. Moreover, its provenance also suggests that substantial portions of the coelurosaur fossil record may be missing or unsampled. However, the Early Jurassic age of Eshanosaurus requires confirmation if this taxon is to be fully incorporated into broader evolutionary studies.  相似文献

Ammonites bidentosus Quenstedt from theplatynotazone of the Lower Kimmeridgian (Upper Jurassic) belongs to the genusCymaceras. Its peculiarities can be explained by neoteny. Although the species is a microconch, there is no proof of sexual dimorphism. The species is known from southern Germany and northern Switzerland. It is always rare. Most specimens are linked with the sponge-algal facies.  相似文献

Background

The Middle Jurassic was a critical time in the evolutionary history of ichthyosaurs. During this time interval, the diverse, well-studied faunas of the Lower Jurassic were entirely replaced by ophthalmosaurids, a new group that arose sometime prior to the Aalenian-Bajocian boundary and by the latest middle Jurassic comprised the only surviving group of ichthyosaurs. Thus, the Middle Jurassic Aalenian-Bathonian interval (176–165 million years ago) comprises the time frame during which ophthalmosaurids not only originated but also achieved taxonomic dominance. However, diagnostic ichthyosaur remains have been described previously from only a single locality from this interval, from the Bajocian of Argentina.

Methodology/Principal Findings

In this paper, we describe a new species of ichthyosaur based on a partial articulated specimen from the Middle Jurassic of southwestern Germany. This specimen was recovered from the Opalinuston Formation (early Aalenian) and is referable to Stenopterygius aaleniensis sp. nov. reflecting features of the skull and forefin. The genus Stenopterygius is diverse and abundant in the Lower Jurassic of Europe, but its presence has not previously been confirmed in younger (Middle Jurassic) rocks from the northern hemisphere.

Conclusions/Significance

This specimen represents the only diagnostic ichthyosaur remains reported from the Aalenian. It bears numerous similarities in size and in morphology to the Lower Jurassic species of the genus Stenopterygius and provides additional evidence that the major ecological changes hypothesized to have occurred at the end of the Toarcian took place sometime after this point and most likely did not occur suddenly. There is currently no evidence for the presence of ophthalmosaurids in the northern hemisphere during the Aalenian-Bathonian interval.  相似文献

An association of contemporaneous Jurassic mega- and miospores with reworked Carboniferous mega- and miospores is described from the Lower Lias rocks of northeast Scotland. The assemblage is compared with other accounts of reworked spores in Jurassic sediments. It is suggested that such reworking was particularly common in the Lower Jurassic of northern Europe and that four situations exist in the literature concerning probable cases of reworking: (1) the spores are recognised as reworked; (2) the identity of the spores as Carboniferous species is recognised and the “range” of these species is extended into the Jurassic; (3) the reworked spores are not recognised as such, and are incorrectly assigned to Jurassic genera and species; (4) the spores are recognised as Carboniferous, but their origin is attributed to contamination rather than reworking. In conclusion, the contrasting preservational features exhibited by the reworking and contemporaneous megaspores are discussed and interpreted as the result of differing depositional and postdepositional histories.  相似文献

Abstract: The Spanish town of Galve (Teruel) is notable because of the abundance of Upper Jurassic and, especially, Lower Cretaceous vertebrates recorded there. Although most groups have been studied in detail, information on turtles is very limited even though the material is relatively abundant. So far, no turtle taxa have been identified at the generic level. The only Lower Cretaceous articulated specimen from Galve is analysed here. It is identified as a representative of Cryptodira, Galvechelone lopezmartinezae gen. et sp. nov. Galvechelone lopezmartinezae is determined as a taxon belonging to the node that groups the turtles traditionally assigned to ‘Macrobaenidae’ and ‘Sinemydidae’, and other taxa such as the members of Panchelonioidea. This node, very abundant in the Lower Cretaceous of Asia, and with a broad subsequent distribution, has recently been recognized in the Lower Cretaceous of Europe. The diversity of basal members of Eucryptodira in the European Late Jurassic (represented by Thalassemydidae, Plesiochelyidae and Eurysternidae) was high. Owing to a relative scarcity of well‐preserved early Cretaceous turtles from Europe, the knowledge of this group of reptiles is limited. The study of the new turtle from Galve, together with the recently described Hoyasemys jimenezi, and the recently completed review of the enigmatic Chitracephalus dumonii demonstrate that members of the cryptodiran node grouping ‘Macrobaenidae’, ‘Sinemydidae’ and Panchelonioidea were also very diverse in this period.  相似文献

Instances of convergence or parallelism among unrelated Lower Carixian ammonites are not uncommon. The case of polymorphitid-like ammonites is considered here, and the example of Coeloceras is investigated in detail. The small sexual dimorph (microconch) of Coeloceras pettos (Quensitedt) (Coeloceratidae), a progenetic species, provides a remarkable example of complex convergence with the microconch of Uptonia (Polymorphitidae). Homeomorphic morphology is here an amalgam of juvenile traits, of maturation-related transformations, and of completely new features bearing no obvious relation with either progenesis or maturation. A stratophenetic approach is hardly adequate for unravelling such an involved pattern of convergence. However, a cladistic analysis of ammonoid morphology suggests that Coeloceras was derived from the Tethyan Miltoceras. Indeed, greater biostratigraphic knowledge and the independent use of comparative shell morphology are both needed to improve ammonite phylogeny. □ Convergence, parallelism, progenesis, dimorphism, ammonites, Jurassic.  相似文献

Jurassic studies in the Internal Zones of the Betic Cordillera are scarce since this zone is composed mainly of pre-Jurassic metamorphic rocks. Only the “Dorsal” and the Malaguide domains include fossiliferous Jurassic successions, as in Sierra Espuña (SE Spain), which is one of the bigger and well-exposed Jurassic outcrops of the Internal Zones. Collected Ammonite assemblages update and improve the precision of previous biostratigraphic data by the recognition of: the Domerian (= Upper Pliensbachian, in the Mediterranean Domain) Lavinianum (Cornacaldense Subzone), Algovianum (Ragazzoni, Bertrandi, Accuratum and Levidorsatum Subzones) and Emaciatum (Solare and Elisa Subzones) Zones; the Lower Toarcian Polymorphum and Serpentinum Zones; the Middle Toarcian, Bifrons and Gradata Zone; the Upper Toarcian Reynesi Zone; the Lower/Upper Bajocian, the Lower Callovian Bullatus and Gracilis Zones; the Middle/Upper Oxfordian Transversarium, Bifurcatus, Bimammatum and Planula Zones; and the Lower and Upper Kimmeridgian Platynota, Strombecki, Divisum and Beckeri Zones. The paleoenvironmental evolution of the Malaguide Jurassic at Sierra Espuña shows similarities with other Mediterranean Tethyan paleomargins. The biostratigraphic precision along with the litho- and biofacies analyses has enabled the interpretation that the Malaguide paleomargin evolved as a passive margin, developing shallow carbonate platforms, until the Domerian (Lavinianum Zone). Then, the platform broke up (Domerian, Lavinianum Zone-Upper Toarcian, Reynesi Zone) with the beginning of the rifting stage, beginning the development of horst-graben systems and the coeval drowning of the area. This stage ended in the upper Lower Callovian (Gracilis Zone) to the Middle Oxfordian (Transversarium Zone) interval, starting the drifting stage, which accentuated the horst-graben systems, leading to the deposition of condensed nodular limestones in the raised sea bottom.  相似文献

In this paper the data on fossils of the family Cerophytidae are reviewed. New synonymy on generic names Necromera Martynov 1926 (proposed in composition of the family Oedemeridae); Idiomerus Dolin in Dolin et al. 1980, n. syn. (proposed in composition of Elateridae) and Leptocnemus Hong & Wang 1990, n. syn. (proposed without any family attribution) is established. New materials on this family from Mesozoic deposits of Asia are cited. As a result, it was established that this spreads in deposits of both Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous. Mercata festira Lin 1986 described from Lower Jurassic as member of Silphidae and Abrotus reconditus Dolin in Dolin et al. 1980 described from Upper Jurassic as a member of Elateridae are transferred to Cerophytidae. Diagnoses of the genus Necromera and family Cerophytidae in compression fossils are elaborated. Necromera admiranda n. sp. is described from the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous in Liaoning, China. The historical development of the family from the Lower Jurassic is discussed.  相似文献

Background

The early evolution of sauropod dinosaurs is poorly understood because of a highly incomplete fossil record. New discoveries of Early and Middle Jurassic sauropods have a great potential to lead to a better understanding of early sauropod evolution and to reevaluate the patterns of sauropod diversification.

Principal Findings

A new sauropod from the Middle Jurassic of Niger, Spinophorosaurus nigerensis n. gen. et sp., is the most complete basal sauropod currently known. The taxon shares many anatomical characters with Middle Jurassic East Asian sauropods, while it is strongly dissimilar to Lower and Middle Jurassic South American and Indian forms. A possible explanation for this pattern is a separation of Laurasian and South Gondwanan Middle Jurassic sauropod faunas by geographic barriers. Integration of phylogenetic analyses and paleogeographic data reveals congruence between early sauropod evolution and hypotheses about Jurassic paleoclimate and phytogeography.

Conclusions

Spinophorosaurus demonstrates that many putatively derived characters of Middle Jurassic East Asian sauropods are plesiomorphic for eusauropods, while South Gondwanan eusauropods may represent a specialized line. The anatomy of Spinophorosaurus indicates that key innovations in Jurassic sauropod evolution might have taken place in North Africa, an area close to the equator with summer-wet climate at that time. Jurassic climatic zones and phytogeography possibly controlled early sauropod diversification.  相似文献

The early Mesozoic fossil fauna collected from the Lower Lufeng Formation of Yunnan Province, China, has attracted considerable interest and attention since its discovery in the late 1930s. Its importance reflected a combination of its comparatively remote geographical position and, more particularly, the similarities of its fauna compared with approximately contemporary discoveries from Europe, North and South America, and southern Africa. The fragmentary and poorly preserved Lufeng ornithischian dinosaur Tatisaurus oehleri was described in 1965 and proved taxonomically and systematically enigmatic from the start. Originally assigned, with some noted ambivalence, to the basal ('primitive') group of ornithischians known as hypsilophodontids, since 1965 Tatisaurus has been variously ignored, assigned to a more rigorously defined Hypsilophodontidae, referred to both of the armoured (thyreophoran) ornithischian dinosaur clades (Stegosauria and Ankylosauria), or referred to a more basal position within the thyreophoran lineage. In 1996 the holotype of Tatisaurus was renamed Scelidosaurus oehleri , and the genus Scelidosaurus was proposed as an index fossil of the ' Scelidosaurus biochron' with the potential to be used for the global stratigraphic correlation of Early Jurassic (early Sinemurian) rocks. Because of this chequered history Tatisaurus oehleri Simmons, 1965 has been re-examined and is redescribed so that its taxonomic status and systematic position could be reassessed. Tatisaurus is identified as a basal thyreophoran (armoured ornithischian dinosaur); there is no basis for amalgamating it in synonymy with the genus Scelidosaurus , and the proposed creation of a ' Scelidosaurus biochron' for the purposes of biostratigraphic correlation of Lower Jurassic outcrops has no utility whatever. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 150 , 865–874.  相似文献

Hitherto the earliest positive record of ankylosaurs(armored dinosaurs) has been from beds well up in the Lower Cretaceous; in fact, however, specimens referable to the ankylosaurian family Nodosauridae are present in the Middle and Upper Jurassic of England: from the Middle Callovian [partial mandible Sarcolestes leedsiLydekker]], the Upper Oxfordian [femur Cryptodraco eumerus (Seeley)), maxilla Priodontognathus phillipsii (Seeley))], and the Upper Tithonian [caudal vertebra, tooth]. The Tithonian tooth and those of Priodontognathus are large and similar to those of the nodosaurids Priconodon and Sauropelta (Lower Cretaceous, U.S.A.). The incomplete mandible of Sarcolestes is similar to that of Sauropelta with a dermal scute fused to the lateral surface, and a tooth row extending to the anterior end of the jaw; an unusual feature is the caniniform first tooth. The quadrupedal ankylosaurs and stegosaurs probably represent separate evolutionary lines that extend back at least into the Lower Jurassic, and both lines probably evolved from ornithopod dinosaurs that were bipedal. Nodosaurid ankylosaurs occur in Europe from the Middle Jurassic to Late Cretaceous and probably reached North America via a filter route in the early Cretaceous.  相似文献

Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous from Beritsa, near Ankilizato, are an important landmark between well known cross sections of Northern (Antsalova) and Southern (Sikily) parts of the Morondava Basin. New ammonites and belemnites fauna point out an Upper Jurassic to Upper Valanginian age for this section. A paleogeographical scheme shows the dynamical structure of «Ankilizato gulf at that time.  相似文献

As extant bilaterian phyla emerged during the Lower Cambrian, these clades acquired morphological features that separated them from their stem groups. At the same time, morphological variants on the body plan within a phylum emerged that we recognize as classes and subphyla. In many cases, the emergence of body plan variants within a phylum is associated with major changes in patterns of early regional specification. Subsequently these different patterns of regional specification were stabilized, probably because later developmental events depended on them. As a consequence, the frequency of new body plan variants involving early development declined in these lineages at later periods during their history. This hypothesis is explicated here by examining the process of early regional specification in the different subphyla of brachiopods and in pairs of species from the same subphylum belonging to different clades that originated during the Jurassic, Ordovician, and Lower Cambrian.  相似文献

Summary The Epanomi-New Iraklia area (West coast of the Chalkidiki peninsula) is considered to belong to the Prepeonias subzone (or Gevgeli unit), with a palaeogeographic position near the European margin, represented by the Serbo-Macedonian massif, and at a considerable distance from the fragmented African plate, the marginal block of which is here the Pelagonian Domain. In some boreholes in the area an Upper Jurassic to Lowei Cretaceous limestone sequence has been observed, ending with an unconformity and followed by an Upper Middle-Lower Upper Eocene transgressive bioclastic limestone, an Upper Eocene to Lower Oligocene clastic series and Neogene deposits. This Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous carbonate platform sequence and probably the Upper Jurassic limestones with bauxites of the nearby Mt. Katsika, show African affinities, viz: the presence of the essentially Aptian algal speciesSalpingoporella dinarica, an African plate marker; the chlorozoan type association and the bauxite formation during the Late Jurassic indicating tropical conditions; finally, the chloralgal type association and the sporadic presence of radial-fibrous ooids during the Early Cretaceous indicating peritropical conditions. Lower Cretaceous limestones are apparently missing in the innermost Hellenides. In the Pelagonian Domain s.l., on the other hand, Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous limestones are found in some places, with same characteristics as in the Epanomi-New Iraklia boreholes. On the contrary, the Upper Eocene to Lower Oligocene clastic series of the boreholes can be correlated with the Axios (=Vardar) molassic basin, inline with its present situation. During the Mesozoic, the Epanomi area therefore belonged to a micro-block, next to the NE margin of the Pelagonian Domain, in contrast to earlier interpretations. Its present time position results from Early Cenozoic tectonic phases.  相似文献

Stratigraphic distribution and ecology of European Jurassic bivalves   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Documentation of bivalve generic and species diversity and times of first and last appearance through successive Jurassic stages in Europe, together with data on turnover and changes in taxonomic and ecological composition of the faunas, indicate an approximation to the establishment of an equilibrium fauna by early Middle Jurassic times. Subsequently faunal change was slight compared with the early Jurassic. A diversity increase through the Lower into the Middle Jurassic correlates with an increase in the area of epicontinental seas, while a major species extinction in the early Toarcian is bound up with the onset of widespread stagnation associated with a rise of sea level. An increase of the generic extinction rate at the end of the period correlates with a regional marine regression. The mean species longevity is estimated at 15×106 years. The ecological factors thought to control bivalve distribution are reviewed and four ecological associations distinguished: the reefal, lagoonal and nearshore and basinal marine.  相似文献

Abstract:  Most species of the Lower Jurassic ammonite genus Badouxia are restricted to the eastern Pacific where they are of fundamental importance to the Hettangian/Sinemurian ammonite zonation of North America. The fauna from the type area for the genus has been restudied and four species and two transitional forms are now recognized. Badouxia forticostata and Badouxia castlensis are new. Badouxia occidentalis (Frebold) and Badouxia oregonensis Taylor are placed in synonymy with Badouxia canadensis (Frebold). These major taxonomic changes and subsequent modification to the range of B . canadensis require revisions to the current zonation for the Western Cordillera of North America. The Oregonensis Zone is re-named the Mineralense Zone. The Canadensis Zone is abandoned and its previously defined Rursicostatum and Columbiae subzones are elevated to the level of full zones. Large samples indicate that most species of Badouxia display a remarkable range of continuously variable morphology. In addition, the genus shows some of the best-documented evidence of sexual dimorphism in Early Jurassic ammonites. Badouxia spans the Hettangian/Sinemurian boundary and based on the range of different species, five stratigraphic intervals are recognized. Intervals 1–3 correlate with the north-west European Angulata Zone. The majority of interval 4 and the whole of interval 5 correlate with the north-west European Bucklandi Zone. The age of the base of interval 4 is uncertain.

The genus Maminka Barrande, 1881 (Lunulacardiidae) from the Wenlock and Ludlow (Silurian, Lower Paleozoic) of Europe is the oldest known bivalve with enantiomorphous dimorphism which is common among the Silurian and Devonian Lunulacardiidae and Antipleuridae. It represents the result of a special adaptation to the reclining mode of life combined with byssal attachment when early in ontogeny either the left or right valve became the lower valve; later, the bivalve develops as two enantiomorphous sets of shells. Distribution, ontogeny and evolution of this interesting feature in the genera Maminka Barrande, 1881, Stolidotus Hede, 1915, Mila Barrande, 1881, Dualina Barrande, 1881, Antipleura Barrande, 1881, Silurina Barrande, 1881 and Hercynella Kayser, 1878 are discussed.  相似文献
