Flying-foxes are better able to defend haemoglobin against autoxidation than non-volant mammals such as sheep. When challenged with the common physiological oxidant, hydrogen peroxide, haemolysates of flying-fox red blood cells (RBC) were far less susceptible to methaemoglobin formation than sheep. Challenge with 1-acetyl-2-phenylhydrazine (APH) caused only half as much methaemoglobin formation in flying-fox as in ovine haemolysates. When intact cells were challenged with phenazine methosulfate (PMS), flying-fox RBC partially reversed the oxidant damage, and reduced methaemoglobin from 40 to 20% over 2 h incubation, while ovine methaemoglobin remained at 40%. This reflected flying-fox cells’ capacity to replenish GSH fast enough that it did not deplete beyond 50%, while ovine RBC GSH was depleted to around 20%. The greater capacity of flying-foxes to defend haemoglobin against oxidant damage may be explained in part by antioxidant enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase and cytochrome-b 5 reductase having two- to four-fold higher activity than in sheep (P < 0.001). Further, their capacity to limit GSH depletion to 50% and reduce methaemoglobin (in the presence of glucose), despite ongoing exposure to PMS may result from having ten-fold higher activity of G6PD and 6PGD than sheep (P < 0.001), indicating the presence of a very efficient pentose phosphate pathway in flying-foxes.  相似文献

Birds combat ectoparasites with many defences but the first line of defence is grooming behaviour, which includes preening with the bill and scratching with the feet. Preening has been shown to be very effective against ectoparasites. However, most tests have been with feather lice, which are relatively slow moving. Less is known about the effectiveness of preening as a defence against more mobile and evasive ectoparasites such as hippoboscid flies. Hippoboscids, which feed on blood, have direct effects on the host such asanaemia, as well as indirect effects as vectors of pathogens. Hence, effective defence against hippoboscid flies is important. We used captive Rock Pigeons (Columba livia) to test whether preening behaviour helps to control pigeon flies (Pseudolynchia canariensis). We found that pigeons responded to fly infestation by preening twice as much as pigeons without flies. Preening birds killed twice as many flies over the course of our week-long experiment as birds with impaired preening; however, preening did not kill all of the flies. We also tested the role of the bill overhang, which is critical for effective preening against feather lice, by experimentally removing the overhang and re-measuring the effectiveness of preening against flies. Birds without overhangs were as effective at controlling flies as were birds with overhangs. Overall, we found that preening is effective against mobile hippoboscid flies, yet it does not eliminate them. We discuss the potential impact of preening on the transmission dynamics of blood parasites vectored by hippoboscid flies.  相似文献

Superparasitism refers to the oviposition behavior of parasitoid females who lay their eggs in an already parasitized host. This often yields intense competition among larvae that are sharing the same host. Why would a female oviposit in such hostile habitat instead of looking for a better quality, unparasitized host? Here we present a continuous-time model of host-parasitoid interaction and discuss alternative scenarios. This model is first used to analyze the evolution of the superparasitism behavior of a solitary proovigenic parasitoid under both time and egg limitation. Then, following the recent discovery by Varaldi et al., we allow the parasitoid to be infected by a virus that alters the superparasitism behavior of its host to enhance its own horizontal transmission. The analysis of the coevolution of this manipulative behavior with the oviposition behavior of uninfected females clarifies and quantifies the conflict that emerges between the parasitoid and its virus. The model also yields new testable predictions. For example, we expect that uninfected parasitoids should superparasite less after coevolving with the manipulative virus. More generally, this model provides a theoretical framework for analyzing the evolution of the manipulation of parasitoid life-history traits by microparasites.  相似文献

Hosts often differ in their degree of parasitism and their expression of resistance. Yet very little is known about how the availability (and allocation) of resources to parasites at pre-infective stages influences their success in initiating parasitism, or in inducing and succumbing to resistance from hosts. We studied a damselfly-mite association to address how experimental variation in the age of first contact with hosts (timing) influenced subsequent parasite fitness. We demonstrate that timing influenced the ability of larval mites to make the transition to parasitism, but was not associated with measures of physiological resistance by hosts. Timing presumably relates to the availability of resources remaining for individuals to exploit their hosts. More research is needed on the importance of such factors, from variation in host resistance and parasite success and, ultimately, to the numbers and distributions of parasites on hosts.  相似文献

Gamma-aminobutyrate: defense against invertebrate pests?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Gamma-aminobutyrate (GABA) is a ubiquitous four-carbon, non-protein amino acid. In plants, stress-induced GABA accumulation is well documented. However, the role(s) of GABA accumulation is contentious. In this Opinion article, we argue that wounding due to herbivory and crawling by insect larvae causes rapid GABA accumulation via the disruption of cellular compartmentation and the release of the acidic vacuolar contents to the cytosol. The activity of glutamate decarboxylase, the cytosolic enzyme responsible for GABA synthesis, has an acidic pH optimum. Subsequent GABA ingestion has a plant defense function by directly acting on GABA-regulated invertebrate neuromuscular junctions. Plants with an enhanced GABA-producing capacity reduce herbivory by invertebrate pests. These findings suggest that GABA accumulation is a rapidly deployed, local resistance mechanism that constitutes a first line of defense in deterring herbivory.  相似文献

Plants emit a substantial amount of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) into the atmosphere. These BVOCs represent a large carbon loss and can be up to approximately 10% of that fixed by photosynthesis under stressful conditions and up to 100gCm(-2) per year in some tropical ecosystems. Among a variety of proven and unproven BVOC functions in plants and roles in atmospheric processes, recent data intriguingly link emission of these compounds to climate. Ongoing research demonstrates that BVOCs could protect plants against high temperatures. BVOC emissions are probably increasing with warming and with other factors associated to global change, including changes in land cover. These increases in BVOC emissions could contribute in a significant way (via negative and positive feedback) to the complex processes associated with global warming.  相似文献

In humans, the presence of supernumerary chromosomes is an unusual phenomenon, which is often associated with developmental abnormalities and malformations. In contrast to most animal and plant species, the extensive knowledge of the human genome and the ample set of molecular and cytogenetic tools available have permitted to ascertain not only that most human supernumerary chromosomes (HSCs) derive from the A chromosome set, but also the specific A chromosome from which most of them arose. These extra chromosomes are classified into six types on the basis of morphology and size. There are both heterochromatic and euchromatic HSCs, the latter being more detrimental. Most are mitotically stable, except some producing individual mosaicism. No information is available on the HSC transmission rate since extensive familial studies are not usually performed generally because of death of the relatives or lack of cooperation. The main B chromosome property failing in HSCs seems to be their population spread as polymorphisms, since most HSCs seem to correspond to extra A chromosomes or centric fragments spontaneously arisen in the analysed individual or one of his/her parents. However, we cannot rule out at this moment, that more intensive studies on population distribution and frequency of those HSCs most closely resembling B chromosomes (i.e. those heterochromatic and thus less detrimental) would reveal possible HSCs polymorphisms. Although HSCs cannot be considered B chromosomes, some of them might be a source for future B chromosomes. The best candidates would be heterochromatic HSCs, which might manage to drive in either sex. To ascertain this possibility, research on inheritance and population studies would be very helpful in combination with the powerful cytogenetic and molecular tools available for our species.  相似文献
