Although water in mangrove sediments influences nutrient cycling in both, mangrove forest and estuary, little information exists on seasonal and vertical distribution of dissolved organic and inorganic compounds in the sediment column. We studied the influence of sediment texture and chemistry, permeability (K), tides, and rainfall on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON), dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) and salinity in creek and sediment waters of a mangrove in Pará, Brazil. Water samples were taken from boreholes and piezometers in the mangrove forest and from an adjacent tidal creek at neap and spring tides, during the dry and rainy season. Forest sediment was analysed for carbon (C), nitrogen (N), salinity and permeability. Clay, C and N decreased with depth. Sediment permeability (K) was lowest (<0.1 m day−1) in the upper, clay-rich and crab-burrow-free mud layer. In the deeper, fine sand strata, K ranged from 0.7 to 1.8 m day−1. Tidal range in the creek was 3.5 and 5.5 m for neap and spring tides, respectively. Salinity, DOC, DON and DIP in creek water were inversely related to tidal height. Piezometer data revealed significant water level changes in deeper, sandy sediment layer, which followed, time-lagged, the tidal fluctuations. In contrast, tide did not affect the water level in the upper sediment due to low permeability. Compared with creek water, sediment water was enriched in DOC, DON and DIP because of organic matter input and mineralization. In deeper layers, solute concentration was most likely affected by sorption processes (DOC and DIP) and reduction reactions (DIP). During the rainy season, DOC and DON in creek and sediment water were higher than in the dry season. DIP appeared invariant to seasonal changes. In the rainy season, salt flushing from surface sediments resulted in higher salinities at intermediate sediment depths, while in the deeper layers salinity was lower due to exchange with water from the tidal creek.  相似文献

Despite growing attention concerning therole of dissolved organic matter (DOM) inelement cycling of forest ecosystems, thecontrols of concentrations and fluxes of bothdissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen(DON) under field conditions in forest soilsremain only poorly understood. The goal ofthis project is to measure the concentrations and fluxes of DON, NH4 +, NO3 and DOC in bulkprecipitation, throughfall, forest floorleachates and soil solutions of a deciduousstand in the Steigerwald region (northernBavaria, Germany). The DOC and DONconcentrations and fluxes were highest inleachates originating from the Oa layer of theforest floor (73 mg C L–1, 2.3 mg NL–1 and about 200–350 kg C, 8–10 kg Nha–1 yr–1). They were observed to behighly variable over time and decreased in themineral topsoil (17 mg C L–1, 0.6 mg NL–1 and about 50–90 kg C, 2.0 to 2.4 kg Nha–1 yr–1). The annual variability ofDOC and DON concentrations and subsequentialDOC/DON ratios was substantial in allsolutions. The DOC and DON concentrations inthroughfall were positively correlated withtemperature. The DOC and DON concentrationsdid not show seasonality in the forest floorand mineral soil. Concentrations were notrelated to litterfall dynamics but didcorrespond in part to the input of DOC and DONfrom throughfall. The throughfall contributionto the overall element fluxes was higher forDON than for DOC. Concentrations and fluxes ofDON were significantly correlated to DOC inthroughfall and the Oi layer. However, thecorrelation was weak in Oa leachates. Inaddition, seasonal and annual variation ofDOC/DON ratios indicated different mechanismsand release rates from the forest floor forboth components. The concentrations of DOC andDON in forest floor leachates were in mostcases dependent neither on the pH value orionic strength of the solution, nor on thewater flux or temperature changes. As aconsequence, the DOC and DON fluxes from theforest floor into the mineral soil werelargely dependent on the water flux if annualand biweekly time scales are considered.  相似文献

Diurnal variation in hydrological variables and dissolved inorganic nutrients such as PO inf4 sup3– -P, N O inf2 sup– -N, NO inf3 sup– -N and NH inf4 sup+ -N were studied in three interconnected biotopes including freshwater, marine and mangrove brackish water of the Kakinada coastal zone, Andhra Pradesh. Samples were collected at intervals of 3 hours, for a period of 24 hours. In the marine environment salinity varied from 26 to 32 whereas in the mangrove waters it fluctuated from 12 to 20 and in both biotopes salinity showed bimodal type of oscillation. Dissolved oxygen content was high in the mangrove waters during day time but decreased rapidly during the night hours. In the marine environment POf4 p3–-P concentration varied from 0.345 to 1.195 g at l–1, NO inf3 sup– -N from 1.03 to 6.62 g at l–1 and NO inf2 sup– -N from 0.086 to 0.506 g at l–1. The highest and the lowest concentrations of PO inf4 sup3– -P, NO inf3 sup– -N, NO inf2 sup– -N recorded in the mangrove waters were 0.790 and 0.325 g at l–1, 7.10 and 1.60 g at l–1 and 0.278 and 0.060 g at l–1, respectively. The concentration of PO inf4 sup3– -P, NO inf3 sup– -N and NO inf2 sup– -N were high in the freshwater canal, the maximum and minimum values being 1.110 and 0.730 g at l–1, 26.40 and 9.98 g at l–1 and 0.520 and 0.252 g at l–1 respectively. The concentration of ammonia was relatively high in the mangrove water. Gross and net primary production in the mangrove water was 4 times higher than in the marine biotope. There was no export of dissolved nutrients from the mangrove environment to the adjacent marine waters.  相似文献

The Adirondack region of New York is characterized by soils and surface waters that are sensitive to inputs of strong acids, receiving among the highest rates of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition in the United States. Atmospheric N deposition to Adirondack ecosystems may contribute to the acidification of soils through losses of exchangeable basic cations and the acidification of surface waters in part due to increased mobility of nitrate (NO3). This response is particularly evident in watersheds that exhibit nitrogen saturation. To evaluate the contribution of atmospheric N deposition to the N export and the capacity of lake-containing watersheds to remove, store, or release N, annual N input–output budgets were estimated for 52 lake-containing watersheds in the Adirondack region from 1998 to 2000. Wet N deposition was used as the N input and the lake N discharge loss was used as the N output based on modeled hydrology and measured monthly solute concentrations. Annual outputs were also estimated for dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Wet N deposition increased from the northeast to the southwest across the region. Lake N drainage losses, which exhibited a wider range of values than wet N deposition, did not show any distinctive spatial pattern, although there was some evidence of a relationship between wet N deposition and the lake N drainage loss. Wet N deposition was also related to the fraction of N removed or retained within the watersheds (i.e., the fraction of net N hydrologic flux relative to wet N deposition, calculated as [(wet N deposition minus lake N drainage loss)/wet N deposition]). In addition to wet N deposition, watershed attributes also had effects on the exports of NO3, ammonium (NH4+), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and DOC, the DOC/DON export ratio, and the N flux removed or retained within the watersheds (i.e., net N hydrologic flux, calculated as [wet N deposition less lake N drainage loss]). Elevation was strongly related with the lake drainage losses of NO3, NH4+, and DON, net NO3 hydrologic flux (i.e., NO3 deposition less NO3 drainage loss), and the fraction of net NO3 hydrologic flux, but not with the DOC drainage loss. Both DON and DOC drainage losses from the lakes increased with the proportion of watershed area occupied by wetlands, with a stronger relationship for DOC. The effects of wetlands and forest type on NO3 flux were evident for the estimated NO3 fluxes flowing from the watershed drainage area into the lakes, but were masked in the drainage losses flowing out of the lakes. The DOC/DON export ratios from the lake-containing watersheds were in general lower than those from forest floor leachates or streams in New England and were intermediate between the values of autochthonous and allochthonous dissolved organic matter (DOM) reported for various lakes. The DOC/DON ratios for seepage lakes were lower than those for drainage lakes. In-lake processes regulating N exports may include denitrification, planktonic depletion, degradation of DOM, and the contribution of autochthonous DOM and the influences of in-lake processes were also reflected in the relationships with hydraulic retention time. The N fluxes removed or stored within the lakes substantially varied among the lakes. Our analysis demonstrates that for these northern temperate lake-containing watershed ecosystems, many factors, including atmospheric N deposition, landscape features, hydrologic flowpaths, and retention in ponded waters, regulated the spatial patterns of net N hydrologic flux within the lake-containing watersheds and the loss of N solutes through drainage waters.  相似文献

Short-term (daily) and seasonal variations in concentration and flux of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were examined over 15 tidal cycles in a riverine mangrove wetland along Shark River, Florida in 2003. Due to the influence of seasonal rainfall and wind patterns on Shark River’s hydrology, samplings were made to include wet, dry and transitional (Norte) seasons. We used a flume extending from a tidal creek to a basin forest to measure vertical (vegetated soil/water column) and horizontal (mangrove forest/tidal creek) flux of DOC. We found significant (p < 0.05) variations in surface water temperature, salinity, conductivity, pH and mean concentration of DOC with season. Water temperature and salinity followed seasonal patterns of air temperature and rainfall, while mean DOC concentration was highest during the dry season (May), followed by the wet (October) and ‘Norte’ (December) seasons. This pattern of DOC concentration may be due to a combination of litter production and inundation pattern of the wetland. In contrast to daily (between tides) variation in DOC flux between the mangrove forest and tidal creek, daily variations of mean water quality were not significant. However, within-tide variation of DOC flux, dissolved oxygen content and salinity was observed. This indicated that the length of inundation and water source (freshwater vs. saltwater) variation across tidal cycles influenced water quality and DOC flux in the water column. Net DOC export was measured in October and December, suggesting the mangrove forest was a source of DOC to the adjacent tidal creek during these periods. Net annual export of DOC from the fringe mangrove to both the tidal creek and basin mangrove forest was 56 g C m−2 year−1. The seasonal pattern in our flux results indicates that DOC flux from this mangrove forest may be governed by both freshwater discharge and tidal range.  相似文献

Benthic oxygen consumption and primary production were measured using the bell jar technique in deltaic and fringing mangrove forests of tropical northeastern Australia. In a deltaic forest, rates of sediment respiration ranged from 197 to 1645 mol O2 m–2 h–1 (mean=836), but did not vary significantly with season or intertidal zone. Gross primary production varied among intertidal zones and seasons, ranging from –281 to 1413 mol O2 m–2 h–1 (mean=258). Upon tidal exposure, rates of gross primary production increased, but respiration rates did not change significantly. In a fringing mangrove forest, benthic respiration and gross primary production exhibited strong seasonality. In both forests, rates of oxygen consumption and production were low compared to salt marshes, but equivalent to rates in other mangrove forests. The production:respiration (P/R) ratio varied greatly over space and time (range:–0.61 to 1.76), but most values were «1 with a mean of 0.15, indicating net heterotrophy. On a bare creek bank and a sandflat, rates of gross primary production and P/R ratios were generally higher than in the adjacent mangroves. Low microalgal standing stocks, low light intensity under the canopy, and differences in gross primary production between mangroves and tidal flats, and with tidal status, indicate that benthic microalgae are light-limited and a minor contributor to primary productivity in these tropical mangrove forests.  相似文献

Although tropical wet forests play an important role in the global carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles, little is known about the origin, composition, and fate of dissolved organic C (DOC) and N (DON) in these ecosystems. We quantified and characterized fluxes of DOC, DON, and dissolved inorganic N (DIN) in throughfall, litter leachate, and soil solution of an old-growth tropical wet forest to assess their contribution to C stabilization (DOC) and to N export (DON and DIN) from this ecosystem. We found that the forest canopy was a major source of DOC (232 kg C ha–1 y–1). Dissolved organic C fluxes decreased with soil depth from 277 kg C ha–1 y–1 below the litter layer to around 50 kg C kg C ha–1 y–1 between 0.75 and 3.5m depth. Laboratory experiments to quantify biodegradable DOC and DON and to estimate the DOC sorption capacity of the soil, combined with chemical analyses of DOC, revealed that sorption was the dominant process controlling the observed DOC profiles in the soil. This sorption of DOC by the soil matrix has probably led to large soil organic C stores, especially below the rooting zone. Dissolved N fluxes in all strata were dominated by mineral N (mainly NO3). The dominance of NO3 relative to the total amount nitrate of N leaching from the soil shows that NO3 is dominant not only in forest ecosystems receiving large anthropogenic nitrogen inputs but also in this old-growth forest ecosystem, which is not N-limited.  相似文献

In this study, we estimated whether changes in hydrological pathwaysduring storms could explain the large temporal variations of dissolvedorganic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) in the runoff of threecatchments: a forest and a grassland sub-catchment of 1600m2 delineated by trenches, and a headwater catchment of 0.7km2.The average annual DOC export from the sub-catchments was 185 kg DOCha–1 y–1 for the forest, 108 kg DOCha–1 y–1 for the grassland and 84 kgDOC ha–1 y–1 for the headwatercatchment. DON was the major form of the dissolved N in soil and streamwater. DON export from all catchments was approximately 6 kg Nha–1 y–1, which corresponded to 60% ofthe total N export and to 50% of the ambient wet N deposition. DOC andDON concentrations in weekly samples of stream water were positivelycorrelated with discharge. During individual storms, concentrations andproperties of DOC and DON changed drastically. In all catchments, DOCconcentrations increased by 6 to 7 mg DOC l–1 comparedto base flow, with the largest relative increment in the headwatercatchment (+350%). Concentrations of DON, hydrolysable amino acids, andphenolics showed comparable increases, whereas the proportion ofcarbohydrates in DOC decreased at peak flow. Prediction of DOC and DONconcentrations by an end-member mixing analysis (EMMA) on the base ofinorganic water chemistry showed that changes in water flow pathslargely explained these temporal variability. According to the EMMA, thecontribution of throughfall to the runoff peaked in the initial phase ofthe storm, while water from the subsoil dominated during base flow only.EMMA indicated that the contribution of the DOC and DON-rich topsoil washighest in the later stages of the storm, which explained the highestDOC and DON concentrations as the hydrograph receded. Discrepanciesbetween observed and predicted concentrations were largest for thereactive DOC compounds such as carbohydrates and phenolics. Theyoccurred at base flow and in the initial phase of storms. This suggeststhat other mechanisms such as in-stream processes or a time-variantrelease of DOC also played an important role.  相似文献

Effects of clear-cutting on the dissolved fluxes of organic C (DOC), organic N (DON), NO3 and NH4 + through surface soil horizons were studied in a Norway spruce dominated mixed boreal forest in eastern Finland. Bulk deposition, total throughfall and soil water from below the organic (including understorey vegetation and, after clear-cutting, also logging residues), eluvial and illuvial horizons were sampled weekly from 1993 to 1999. Clear-cutting was carried out in September 1996. The removal of the tree canopy decreased the deposition of DOC and DON to the forest floor and increased that of NH4 + and NO3 but did not affect the deposition of total N (DTN, <3 kg ha–1 a–1). The leaching of DOC and DON from the organic horizon increased over twofold after clear-cutting (fluxes were on an average 168 kg C and 3.3 kg N ha–1 a–1), but the increased outputs were effectively retained in the surface mineral soil horizons. Inorganic N deposition was mainly retained by the logging residues and organic horizon indicating microbial immobilization. Increased NO3 formation reflected as elevated concentrations in the percolate from below the mineral soil horizons were observed especially in the third year after clear-cutting. However, the changes were small and the increased leaching of DTN from below the illuvial horizon remained small (<0.4 kg ha–1 a–1) and mainly DON. Effects of clear-cutting on the transport of C and N to surface waters will probably be negligible.  相似文献

Ice cores were collected between 10.03.93 and 15.03.93 along a 200 m profile on a large ice floe in Fram Strait. The ice was typical of Arctic multi-year ice, having a mean thickness along the profile of 2.56 ±0.53 m. It consisted mostly of columnar ice (83%) grown through congelation of seawater at the ice bottom, and the salinity profiles were characterized by a linear increase from 0 psu at the top to values ranging between 3 and 5 psu at depth. Distributions of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) and major nutrients were compared with ice texture, salinity and chlorophyll a. DOC, DON, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), NH4 + and NO2 were present in concentrations in excess of that predicted by dilution curves derived from Arctic surface water values. Only NO3 was depleted, although not exhausted. High DOC and DON values in conjunction with high NH4 + levels indicated that a significant proportion of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) was a result of decomposition/grazing of ice algae and/or detritus. The combination of high NH4 + and NO2 points to regeneration of nitrogen compounds. There was no significant correlation between DOC and Chl a in contrast to DON, which had a positively significant correlation with both salinity and Chl a, and the distribution of DOM in the cores might best be described as a combination of both physical and biological processes. There was no correlation between DOC and DON suggesting an uncoupling of DOC and DON dynamics in multi year ice.  相似文献

Patterns of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) delivery were compared between times of stormflow and baseflow in Paine Run, an Appalachian stream draining a 12.4 km2 forested catchment in the Shenandoah National Park (SNP), Virginia. The potential in-stream ecological impact of altered concentrations and/or chemical composition of DOM during storms also was examined, using standardized bacterial bioassays. DOC and DON concentrations in Paine Run were consistently low during baseflow and did not show a seasonal pattern. During storms however, mean DOC and DON concentrations approximately doubled, with maximum concentrations occurring on the rising limb of storm hydrographs. The rapid response of DOM concentration to changes in flow suggests a near-stream or in-stream source of DOM during storms. Stormflow (4% of the time, 36% of the annual discharge) contributed >50% of DOC, DON and NO3 flux in Paine Run during 1997. In laboratory bacterial bioassays, growth rate constants were higher on Paine Run stormflow water than on baseflow water, but the fraction of total DOM which was bioavailable was not significantly different. The fraction of the total stream DOC pool taken up by water column bacteria was estimated to increase from 0.03 ± 0.02% h–1 during baseflow, to 0.15 ± 0.04% h–1 during storms. This uptake rate would have a minimal effect on bulk DOM concentrations in Paine Run, but storms may still have considerable impact on the bacterial stream communities by mobilizing them into the water column and by supplying a pulse of DOM.  相似文献

Annual studies of kinetics of alkaline phosphatase (APA) activity and phosphorus availability for microplankton in the photic zone of an eutrophic lake are reported. The total APA activity of microplankton varied strongly. Vmax was highest during summer P depletion, and in autumn and winter total APA activity was low. The total APA specific activity of the microplankton was also highest (average 3.55 pmole PO4 3– ng ATP–1 min–1) when ambient orthophosphate concentrations were very low. Both Vmax and specific APA activity were not dependent on the biomass of microplankton; they were strongly affected by P available for microplankton. A differential filtration technique was used for separation of microplankton into two size classes, i.e., algal, larger than 3m, and bacterial fraction with size 0.2–3.0m. The algal size fraction had lower specific APA activity (average 1.224 pmole PO4 3– ng ATP–1 min–1) and higher KM values (38.8mole × liter–1) than microorganisms which were smaller than 3m (2.011 pmole PO4 3– ng ATP–1 min–1 and 25.4mole liter–1, respectively). The KM values of free, dissolved APA (36.8mole liter–1) indicated that free APA was probably released by algae. Phytoplankton were major APA activity producers in the photic zone of the lake from March to November, and their activity constituted, on the average, 48.6% of the total APA activity in the water. Bacteria were the dominant APA activity producers in winter (41.3–44.9%); however, during other periods they contributed significantly (average 21.7%) to total APA activity. When surplus constituted less than 10% of particulate P in seston, phytoplankton produced high specific APA activity, and when surplus P was higher than 15%, the specific APA activity of phytoplankton size fraction rapidly decreased. APA of the bacterial size fraction of the seston was not affected by P concentrations. Orthophosphate was a competitive inhibitor of APA produced by microorganisms of the size fraction larger than 3.0m, and increasing concentrations of inorganic phosphate caused an increase in KM values. The hypothetical metabolic-coupling between phytoplankton and bacterioplankton in the phosphorus cycle in conjunction with carbon metabolism in the lake is discussed.  相似文献

A series of experiments were conducted to address the fate of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the peat–stream interface zone linking a minerotrophic poor fen and an ombrotrophic mire with surrounding stream water in the drainage area of Lake Örträsket in northern Sweden. Transport and mineralisation of DOC were quantified in peat–stream interface cores in response to variations in pore water velocity, DOC concentration and the molecular size and source of DOC. Mineralisation and CH4 production were positively correlated with pore water velocity at rates between 0.08 and 0.20cmh–1 and negatively correlated at rates between 0.20 and 0.40cmh–1. The DOC concentration of the effluent from the peat cores was independent of the pore water velocity but proportional to the DOC concentration of the source water. Higher concentrations of DOC were exported from than imported to the peat cores, and the cores exported DOC molecules of smaller average molecular size than received. Carbon mineralisation in the peat, assessed in a static system, was independent of the concentration of DOC. DOC with a nominal cutoff at 100Da was mineralised faster by streamwater bacteria than DOC dialysed with a cutoff at 3500Da, and their mineralisation rate was positively correlated with the DOC concentration. Streamwater bacteria mineralised streamwater DOC at a lower rate than the peat–stream interface zone pore water DOC. The pattern of velocity dependence of mineralisation was the same for both sources of peat DOC but the mineralisation rates, average molecular size, and bioavailability of DOC were different, emphasising the importance of the compositional heterogeneity of the peat–stream interface zone for the DOC budget of streamwater.  相似文献

Retention of soluble organic nutrients by a forested ecosystem   总被引:10,自引:6,他引:4
We document an example of a forested watershed at the Coweeta HydrologicLaboratory with an extraordinary tendency to retain dissolved organic matter(DOM) generated in large quantities within the ecosystem. Our objectives weretodetermine fluxes of dissolved organic C, N, and P (DOC, DON, DOP,respectively),in water draining through each stratum of the ecosystem and synthesizeinformation on the physicochemical, biological and hydrologic factors leadingtoretention of dissolved organic nutrients in this ecosystem. The ecosystemretained 99.3, 97.3, and 99.0% of water soluble organic C, N and P,respectively, produced in litterfall, throughfall, and root exudates. Exportsinstreamwater were 4.1 kg ha–1yr–1of DOC, 0.191 kg ha–1 yr–1 ofDON, and 0.011 kg ha–1 yr–1 ofDOP. Fluxes of DON were greater than those of inorganic N in all strata. MostDOC, DON, and DOP was removed from solution in the A and B horizons, with DOCbeing rapidly adsorbed to Fe and Al oxyhydroxides, most likely by ligandexchange. DON and DOC were released gradually from the forest floor over theyear. Water soluble organic C produced in litterfall and throughfall had adisjoint distribution of half-decay times with very labile and veryrefractory fractions so that most labile DOC was decomposed before beingleachedinto the mineral soil and refractory fractions dominated the DOC transportedthrough the ecosystem. We hypothesize that this watershed retained solubleorganic nutrients to an extraordinary degree because the soils have very highcontents of Fe and Al oxyhydroxides with high adsorption capacities and becausethe predominant hydrologic pathway is downwards as unsaturated flow through astrongly adsorbing A and B horizon. The well recognized retention mechanismsforinorganic nutrients combine with adsorption of DOM and hydrologic pathway toefficiently prevent leaching of both soluble inorganic andorganic nutrients in this watershed.  相似文献

Sulfate reduction and pore water solutes related to sulfur cycling and anaerobic processes (short chain fatty acids (SCFA), SO4 2–, TCO2, NH4 +, dissolved sulfides (H2S) and CH4) were examined during one year at a marine fish farm. Mineralization of fish farm waste products was rapid in this non-bioturbated, organic rich sediment. Stimulation of sulfate reduction rates (SRR) occurred primarily in the surface layers where the organic matter was deposited. Acetate was the most important (<99%) of the measured SCFA attaining high concentrations during summer months (up to 4.7 mM). The acetate profiles exhibited distinct seasonal cycles, where periods with high concentrations in the pore waters were found coincident with a high pool of particulate organic matter in the surface sediments and a low activity of the sulfate reducing bacteria (early spring and late summer). Periods with low acetate pools occurred when sulfate reduction rates were high in early summer and in winter were pools of particulate organic matter were decreasing. Methane production was observed concurrent with sulfate reduction in the microbial active surface layers in late summer. Subsurface peaks of SO4 2–, TCO2, NH4 + and H2S were evident in July and August due to rapid mineralization in these surface layers. With decreasing autumn water temperatures mineralization rates declined and subsurface peaks of these solutes disappeared. A strong relationship was found between pore water TCO2, and NH4 +. Ratios between TCO2, and NH4 + were low compared to a control site, attaining minimum values in mid-summer. This indicated rapid nitrogen mineralization of nitrogen rich labile substrates in the fish farm sediment during the entire season.  相似文献

Phosphorus and nitrogen excretion rates by zooplankton communities from two eutrophic and shallow Dutch lakes were measured in laboratory. The variations in excretion rates in the lakes (May–October) were caused mainly by fluctuation in zooplankton biomass. Mean summer excretion rates (June–September) were 2.4 and 0.9 µg PO4P·1–1·d–1 in Lake Loosdercht and Lake Breukeleveen, respectively. This difference between the lakes was caused mainly by the lower zooplankton biomass in Lake Breukeleveen. The excretion of 2.4 µg PO4P·1–1·d compared with the calculated P-demand of phytoplankton of 8.0 µg PO4P·1–1·d–1 is substantial in the summer (June–September) and far more important than the external P-supply of 0.4 µg P·1–1·d–1 and sediment release of 0.5 µg P·1–1·d–1. Both temperature and composition of zooplankton affected the weight specific excretion rates of the zooplankton community. The weight specific community excretion rates of P and N increased with temperature (exponential model); 1–8 g PO4P·mg–1 zooplankton-C·d–1 and 5–42 µg NH3N·mg–1 zooplankton-C·d–1 (10°C–20°C).  相似文献

Aluminum geochemistry in peatland waters   总被引:4,自引:4,他引:0
The chemical speciation of aluminum was examined in surface water samples from Sphagnum peatlands in north-central Minnesota, from peatlands along the Canadian east coast, and from bogs in the Pennine Mountain area of England. In highly organic ([DOC] 50 mg L–1 ), low pH waters, 80–90% of total dissolved Al was complexed with organic matter (OM), while in waters with low DOC ([DOC] 5 mg L–1) 54–86% of total dissolved Al existed as Al+3 or other inorganic Al species. Batch titrations of OM with Al revealed a high Al binding capacity, 1.4–2.8 mol (mg DOC)–1, that generally was unsaturated with Al. Titrations of OM with Al in conjunction with a continuous distribution model were used to determine Al-OM conditional stability constants. Binding capacity (mol Al (mg DOC)–1) and strength (formation constant) increased from pH 3 to 5 but decreased above pH 5 due to formation of AI-hydroxy species including A1(OH)3 (s). The high binding capacity of OM in bog waters facilitates metal mobility, especially in low pH (< 5) wetlands where metal solubility is high and OM concentrations are highest. Results showed that the relative degree of organic matter saturation with metal ions was important in modeling AI speciation in bog waters.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on hypolimnetic metabolism (accumulation of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and methane (CH4)) in 21 lakes across a gradient of DOC concentrations (308 to 1540 mol C L–1). The highly colored nature of the DOC in these lakes suggests it is mostly of terrestrial origin. Hypolimnetic methane accumulation was positively correlated with epilimnetic DOC concentration (Spearman rank correlation = 0.67; p < 0.01), an indicator of allochthonous DOC inputs, but not with photic zone chlorophyll a concentration (Spearman rank correlation = 0.30; p = 0.22). Hypolimnetic DOC concentrations declined in 19 of 21 lakes during the stratified period at rates that ranged from 0.06 to 53.9 mmol m–2 d–1. The hypolimnetic accumulation of DIC + CH4 was positively correlated with, and, in most cases of comparable magnitude to, this DOC decline suggesting that DOC was an important substrate for hypolimnetic metabolism. The percentage of surface irradiance reaching the thermocline was lower in high DOC lakes (0.3%) than in low DOC lakes (6%), reducing hypolimnetic photosynthesis (as measured by the depth and magnitude of the deep dissolved oxygen maxima) in the high DOC lakes. In June, the hypolimnia of lakes with < 400 mol L–1 DOC had high concentrations of dissolved oxygen and no CH4, while the hypolimnia of lakes with DOC > 800 mol L–1 were completely anoxic and often had high CH4 concentrations. Thus, DOC affects hypolimnetic metabolism via multiple pathways: DOC was significant in supporting hypolimnetic metabolism; and at high concentrations depressed photosynthesis (and therefore oxygen production and DIC consumption) in the hypolimnion.  相似文献

A combination of stable isotope studies and 14Cdating were used to identify the main sources andprocesses controlling streamwater DOC and TIC in atemperate non-forested watershed. 13Cvalues for terrestrial (–24.9 to –29.1) and aquatic(–30.5 to –33.5) plants were similar to valuesreported in the literature for similar ecosystems.13C values for DOC in soil solution andstreamwater were consistent with soil and terrestrialvegetation, indicating that the terrestrial ecosystemis the dominant source of aquatic DOC in thiswatershed. 13C values of soil atmosphereCO2 (–17.2 to –25.2) were slightly lessnegative than would be expected for production viaaerobic soil microbial decomposition and rootrespiration. There was a close correspondence between13C values (–15.5 to –21.5) forstreamwater TIC and soil atmospheric CO2 in thecentral part of the catchment where the stream drainsCO2-rich peats. 14C dating showed thatalthough peat has been accumulating in the watershedfor at least 2700 years, DOC in soil pore water andstreamwater contains carbon of predominantly recentorigin (post-AD 1955).  相似文献

Flax anther culture: effect of genotype, cold treatment and media   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We report on screening of wide range of flax cultivars for androgenic response and on testing of induction conditions for flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) anther culture and plant regeneration. Anthers were cultured on four different media: Mo, N6, MS and N&N supplemented with various combinations of growth regulators. The induction of callus formation from cultured anthers was the highest on N6 (with cultivar PR FGL 77 – 12 %) and N&N media (with cultivar Carolin – 2.8 %), preferentially after cold pretreatment (7days at 8 °C). Shoots were formed on calli derived from the microspores inside the cultured anthers on media N&N and N6 supplemented with 1mgl–1 zeatin or 1mgl–1BAP + 1mgl–1NAA, respectively and elongated on MS medium supplemented with 2mgl–1 zeatin. The highest number of shoots (120) was observed with cultivar Red Wing. Shoots were rooted on MS medium supplemented with 2mgl–1IAA. Our experiments resulted in total in 62 % anther response and 155 plants regenerated and transferred into soil.  相似文献
