Fulicin is a D-amino acid-containing neuropeptide that has been thought to control male copulatory behavior in the land snail, Achatina fulica. In the present study, we demonstrated that the vagina and the oviduct of Achatina were densely innervated by fulicin-like immunoreactive neuronal fibers. We confirmed that fulicin was actually present in the vagina by mass spectrometry. Furthermore, fulicin showed a profound excitatory effect on contractions of the vagina and the oviduct. These results suggest that fulicin controls female egg-laying behavior as an excitatory neuropeptide regulating the female reproductive organs of the snail.  相似文献

Background

Blue nevi that arise from the Müllerian tract are rare melanocytic lesions. Several histopathologic variants of cellular blue nevi have been described. The angiomatoid variant is characterized by a vascular component, and is considered to be a rare variant. Few studies have explored the influence of pregnancy on melanocytic lesions.

Case

A 29-year-old woman was presented with a pigmented vaginal lesion that increased gradually during pregnancy. A full term gynecologic examination showed a tumor mass protruding into the vaginal canal. The mass was resected during cesarean-section under the clinical impression of vaginal hemangioma.

Result

Gross examination revealed a cystic mass measuring 6.0 × 4.3 × 3.5 cm, which was filled with dark friable material. Histologically, the mass showed a subepithelial cellular proliferation of heavily pigmented dendritic melanocytes with prominent vascular stroma. Cytologic pleomorphism, junctional activity, atypical mitosis, and necrosis were not found. The proliferation was immunoreactive for HMB-45, S-100 and melan-A, and non-immunoreactive for CD34, smooth muscle actin, and AE1/AE3. The MIB-1 proliferative index was less than 1%. The patient had a postoperative course without complication.

Conclusions

Angiomatoid giant cellular blue nevus arising from the vagina during pregnancy is extremely rare. The low proliferative index and absence of cytologic pleomorphism, or necrosis, supports a benign biological behavior. Clinical follow-up showed no evidence of recurrence at one year after the resection of the mass.

The vagina has been increasingly viewed as an "ecosystem" whose normal microflora help protect it from invading pathogens, including those that cause urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases. We tested new strains of lactobacilli as potential probiotics for maintenance of urogenital tract health, as well as prevention and therapy of urogenital infections. A strain of lactobacilli isolated from the vagina of nonpregnant, healthy, premenopausal women was identified as Lactobacillus rhamnosus L60 by 16S rDNA sequence homology. L60 was evaluated for antimicrobial activity, in vitro antibiotic resistance, autoaggregation, surface hydrophobicity, co-aggregation with other bacterial species, hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) production, and bacterial adherence. It displayed a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity against urogenital pathogens, and resistance to antibiotics commonly prescribed for infections caused by these pathogens. L60 produced H(2)O(2), adhered to vaginal epithelial cells, co-aggregated with Escherichia coli and Candida albicans, and displayed self-aggregation. In view of these characteristics, L60 is considered a potential probiotic, and will be further evaluated for preventive and therapeutic application locally in the vaginal tract.  相似文献

In the two cases of congenital absence of the vagina reported herein, the embryologic point of arrest of development of the mullerian ducts was identical. Both patients had a rudimentary uterus, and one had a fibroid tumor on the rudimentary uterus. As a part of operation to construct a vagina in such cases, exploratory pelvic laparotomy appears to be a desirable step in order to determine the status of the internal genital organs. The use of a split thickness skin graft sewn around a vaginal mold and inserted into the dissected vaginal space results in more rapid healing, less scar tissue and a vagina that is soft, pliable and normal in appearance, even to the extent of having rugal folds.  相似文献

We investigated the relationships between blubber content and a suite of condition indices in harp seals (Phoca groenlandica). Although blubber content was significantly correlated with xiphosternal blubber depth and Condition index they were insensitive indicators of condition. Blubber depth was most variable at a site ca. 60–70% down the length of the body and a more recent index incorporating length, mass and blubber depth devised for phocids was an improved indicator of blubbler mass. Blubber volume was calculated in three ways based on a geometric approximation of a cylinder and also via truncated cones. The cone method accounted for more variance than the other methods although it overestimated blubber mass. Surface area was ascertained using the girth measurements of serial cones and was significantly correlated with total body mass and total body water. We suggest that estimates of total body water generated from surface area could be used to calculate total fat mass and lean body mass  相似文献

Introduction

Homonymous quadrantanopsia results from retrochiasmal lesions in the visual pathway. Invasive mole is a benign tumor that arises from myometrial invasion of a hydatidiform mole via direct extension through tissue or venous channels. Cerebral metastasis of invasive mole is rare and there has been no report demonstrating homonymous quadrantanopsia as the first manifestation of metastasis in any trophoblastic neoplasms.

Case presentation

We report the case of a 31-year-old Asian woman who presented with right homonymous inferior quadrantanopsia from the mass effect of a solitary cerebral metastasis from an invasive mole. A magnetic resonance image (MRI) of the brain showed a metastatic tumor in the left occipital lobe. The visual field improved slightly after chemotherapy. There was a reduction in the tumor size and the surrounding edema. This is the first case report demonstrating that homonymous quadrantanopsia should be included in the manifestations of the metastasis of an invasive mole.

Conclusions

The presentation of homonymous quadrantanopsia must alert ophthalmologists to conduct a complete medical history and arrange specialist consultation.  相似文献

We tested two hypotheses. 1) SkQ1 positively affects postnatal development of hamsters in litters born to parents receiving long-term SkQ1 treatment. 2) SkQ1 accelerates maturation of juvenile females receiving the antioxidant treatment from 10 days of age. Parental pairs were kept in an outdoor vivarium under conditions close to natural. At the age of 25 days, juvenile males in litters born to parents treated daily with SkQ1 (50 nmol/kg per os) had higher epididymis mass. Both the size of a litter and SkQ1 affected epididymis mass in young males. Both the litter size and SkQ1 affected uterus mass in 25-day-old females. Juvenile females who received SkQ1 treatment from 10 days of age demonstrated earlier opening of the vagina. This experiment was replicated with the same result. At the age of 2.5 months, virgin females treated with SkQ1 from the early age demonstrated higher ovary mass.  相似文献

Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common and malignant primary brain tumor. Recent evidence indicates that a subset of glioblastoma tumor cells have a stem cell like phenotype that underlies chemotherapy resistance and tumor recurrence. We utilized a new "multidimensional" capillary isoelectric focusing nano-reversed-phase liquid chromatography platform with tandem mass spectrometry to compare the proteomes of isolated glioblastoma tumor stem cell and differentiated tumor cell populations. This proteomic analysis yielded new candidate proteins that were differentially expressed. Specifically, two isoforms of the membrane proteolipid neuronatin (NNAT) were expressed exclusively within the tumor stem cells. We surveyed the expression of NNAT across 10 WHO grade II and III gliomas and 23 glioblastoma (grade IV) human tumor samples and found NNAT was expressed in a subset of primary glioblastoma tumors. Through additional in vitro studies utilizing the U87 glioma cell line, we found that expression of NNAT is associated with significant increases in cellular proliferation. Paralleling the in vitro results, when NNAT levels were evaluated in tumor specimens from a consecutive cohort of 59 glioblastoma patients, the presence of increased levels of NNAT were found to be a an independent risk factor (P?=?0.006) for decreased patient survival through Kaplan-Meier and multivariate analysis. These findings indicate that NNAT may have utility as a prognostic biomarker, as well as a cell-surface target for chemotherapeutic agents.  相似文献

Introduction

Differentiation of cystic mass lesions of the sellar and parasellar regions may pose a diagnostic dilemma for physicians, neurosurgeons, radiologists and pathologists involved in treating patients with these entities. A considerable number of tumors previously identified as craniopharyngiomas may, in fact, have been xanthogranulomas. We report a case of pituitary dysfunction caused by xanthogranuloma of the intrasellar region.

Case presentation

A 47-year-old man of Japanese descent presented to our institution with a tumor located exclusively in the intrasellar region which manifested as severe hypopituitarism. MRI revealed a clearly defined intrasellar mass that was heterogeneously hyperintense on T1-weighted images and markedly hypointense on T2-weighted images. We preoperatively diagnosed the patient with Rathke's cleft cyst or non-functioning pituitary adenoma. Although the tumor was completely removed using a transsphenoidal approach, the improvement of the patient's endocrine function was marginal, and continued endocrine replacement therapy was needed. Postoperatively, a histological examination revealed the tumor to be a xanthogranuloma of the intrasellar region. His visual field defects and headache improved.

Conclusion

Because diagnosis depends on surgical intervention and xanthogranulomas of the intrasellar region are very rare, the natural history of xanthogranuloma is still unknown. Therefore, this entity is difficult to diagnose preoperatively. We suggest that xanthogranuloma should be included in the differential diagnosis, even in the case of sellar lesions, to formulate appropriate postoperative management and improve endocrine outcomes.  相似文献

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal dominant condition characterized by multiple colorectal adenomas that can progress to carcinoma. FAP can be associated with diverse extracolonic manifestation, including desmoid tumors and adrenal masses. We report our experience with a patient diagnosed of FAP, who developed a desmoid tumor and an adrenal mass in the follow-up. To our knowledge, this is the first case in the literature in which a hypersecretion of aldosterone and cortisol in the adrenal mass of a patient diagnosed of FAP has been demonstrated.  相似文献

A 67-year-old man affected by prostate cancer was incidentally found to have a nodular enlargement of the left adrenal gland without apparent changes in hormonal status. The adrenal mass was found to be scintigraphically active, the radiolabelled compound being concentrated in its context with a consensual suppression of the contralateral uptake. The patient underwent a resection of the adrenal tumor. Histologically and biochemically, the adrenal mass was found to be a non-functioning adenoma. The radioisotopic uptake along with the non-hormonal activity prompted us to call this tumor "Pre-Cushing's syndrome" of the adrenal cortex.  相似文献

Background

Renal transplant recipients have increased risk for developing malignant diseases because of immunosuppression or donor-to-recipient transmission. Malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT) is a rare, highly aggressive and lethal tumor primarily affecting the kidney of infants and young children. MRT has not been reported in the renal allograft of an adult recipient after kidney transplantation.

Case presentation

In this report, a 47-year-old woman who received a kidney transplantation from an infant donor and developed a mass in the transplanted kidney is presented. Pathological examinations revealed a malignant tumor with rhabdoid cells morphologically and the loss of INI1 expression immunohistochemically. The diagnosis of malignant rhabdoid tumor in the transplanted kidney was made. We confirmed that donor-to-recipient malignancy transmission was the cause of MRT in the transplanted kidney by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and short tandem repeat (STR) analysis.

Conclusion

To our knowledge, this is the first case of MRT in an adult renal allograft recipient. This report highlights the importance of the criteria for selection of donors to screen possible malignant tumors transmission.

目的:浆母细胞淋巴瘤(PBL)为罕见的、侵袭性极强的B细胞淋巴瘤,好发于HIV阳性患者的口腔,本文报道了目前国内外首例HIV阴性的原发于阴道残端的PBL,并通过文献复习总结了PBL的临床病理学特征、诊断及鉴别诊断、治疗及预后。方法:回顾分析该病例的临床病理学资料,并结合国内外相关文献进行讨论。结果:该患者诊断明确,HIV阴性,以阴道残端起病,免疫组化示MUM-1阳性,不表达CD20、CD79a和PAX-5,Ki-67阳性率73%。EBER原位杂交阴性。分子学诊断结果示:样品免疫球蛋白基因发生克隆性重排,未检到TCR基因克隆性重排。CHOP样方案疗效不佳,部分缓解后疾病快速进展。该患者从确诊至死亡时间为10.3个月。结论:PBL罕见,病情进展迅速,预后差,生存期短,在进行阴道残端肿瘤的诊断及鉴别诊断时,阴道残端PBL应纳入鉴别范围。  相似文献

Background

Glioblastoma is the most common primary malignant brain tumor. Extraneural metastases are rarely reported in the literature.

Case presentation

We report a case of a 38-year-old patient who was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2015. Four months after surgery, local relapse was found and the patient received a second surgery. After another 4 months, we found a hard mass in the right posterior neck when she admitted to our department for fourth cycle of adjuvant chemotherapy. Immunohistochemical investigation supported the diagnosis of glioblastoma metastases to the neck after resection of the right neck mass. A few days later, spinal vertebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed multiple metastases in the thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and bilateral iliac bones.

Conclusions

Glioblastoma is the most common primary malignant brain tumor. Whole tumor resection and early radiotherapy and chemotherapy can delay recurrence and prolong survival. Extracranial metastases are extremely rare. We report this case with the aim of bringing attention to extracranial metastasis of brain glioma.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of two pathologies, including a neoplasm and infectious condition, by fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology in the same patient is rare. CASE: A 2-year-old, male child presented with fever, abdominal pain and abdominal mass. Imaging findings were strongly in favor of a neuroblastoma. FNA smears from the mass revealed fecal material containing numerous trophozoites of Giardia lamblia. FNA was repeated in view of the imaging findings. Repeat smears showed a small round cell tumor with rosettes and background filamentous/fibrillar material consistent with a neuroblastoma. Chemotherapy reduced the mass considerably. Histopathology of the resected residual mass revealed a ganglioneuroma in addition to remnants of neuroblastoma. The patient was free of disease two years after the initiation of chemotherapy. CONCLUSION: When FNA cytology shows an infectious pathology in the clinical and imaging setting of a tumor, FNA should be repeated so that an important component of the diagnosis is not missed.  相似文献

Lactic acid is the predominant acid present in the vagina. We evaluated the consequences of lactic acid, at physiological levels present in the vagina, on cytokine responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) obtained from 10 individuals in the presence or absence of bacterial lipopolysaccharide. Preincubation of PBMCs in 15 mM lactic acid before the addition of lipopolysaccharide resulted in a 246% mean increase in interleukin-23 (IL-23) secretion over that released in the presence of lipopolysaccharide alone (P=0.0068). The lipopolysaccharide-induced production of tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-6, IL-10 and IL-12 was unaffected by lactic acid. IL-23 stimulation was not observed if the lactic acid was neutralized before its addition to the culture medium or if hydrochloric acid was substituted for lactic acid. In the absence of lipopolysaccharide, lactic acid did not stimulate the production of IL-23 or any of the other cytokines. The increase in IL-23 production was proportional to the lactic acid concentration over a 15-60 mM range. We conclude that at body sites characterized by lactic acid accumulation, such as in the human vagina, exposure to gram-negative bacteria results in selective IL-23 production, leading to a subsequent preferential stimulation of the Th17 T lymphocyte pathway.  相似文献

A recessive mutation (ipv) causing imperforate vagina was discovered in a line of mice selected for low lean tissue mass as a proportion of body weight. Two full sisters were found to have marked swelling of the perineum and complete closure of the vagina. Crosses of heterozygotes identified by progeny testing produced a female progeny ratio not different from the 3 normal: 1 affected (chi 2 = 0.695; p less than .3) expected on the basis of a recessive allele at a single autosomal locus. As a consequence of the imperforate vagina, the uterus and vagina were greatly distended by fluid. The uterus of affected females displayed a swollen uterine lumen and thin endometrial stroma and muscularis. Ovarian tissue of affected females was similar to that of normal mice, and affected females produced ova that were normal in appearance. The mutation causing an imperforate vagina may present a useful model for studying the basis of abnormal vaginal development in other species and increasing the understanding of normal vaginal development in the mouse.  相似文献

Summary Grafts from the vagina and the uterus were transplanted to the anterior chamber of the eye together with crystals of different steroids to investigate whether either the grafted vagina or uterus could be used as indicator of locally produced gestagens.Autologous vaginal and uterine tissues were transplanted into the anterior chamber of the eyes of 199 adult spayed female rats. Crystals of various steroids were placed near to the transplant of the right eye to investigate the local reaction. The steroids used were oestradiol-17, androst-4-ene-317 dione, testosterone, testosterone acetate, progesterone and 3-hydroxypregn-5-en-20-one. The transplant in the left eye served as a control for general reactions. Most of the animals were injected with oestradiol benzoate in order to sensitize the vagina and uterus.The daily injections with 0.1 g oestradiol benzoate produced a typical oestrous picture with a cornified epithelium both in the vagina in situ and in the grafts. The oestrous reaction increased when oestradiol crystals were implanted or when higher doses of oestradiol benzoate were injected.When testosterone or testosterone acetate was implanted in the eye the epithelium of the vaginal transplant was thinner than when only oestrogen had been given.When androsteredione crystals were used, the epithelium of the transplanted vagina was either a rather thick, non-cornified epithelium or a stratified squamous epithelium. In both epithelia mucus could be found in the cells in the upper-most layers.Implantation of progesterone changed the oestrous picture. The epithelium consisted of only 2–3 layers of cells. The upper-most layer or layers presented small to large swollen columnar mucin cells.When pregnenolone crystals were used, the grafted vagina reacted as in the progesterone series though more weakly.The uterus was not suitable for transplantation as it mostly changed into a cystic undifferentiated structure.The vagina in situ and the vaginal graft in the left eye which was not supplied with a steroid showed no characteristics that were marked and constant for any of the steroids except for the oestrogen.In the uterus in situ the gestagens, especially progesterone, caused a stimulation of the stromal cells. Their nuclei became vesicular and showed fine chromatin particles.The investigation was supported by grants from the Medical Faculty of Lund and The Royal Physiographic Society of Lund.  相似文献

Background

Sinonasal renal cell-like carcinoma (SRCLC) is an extremely rare low malignant tumor arising in the sinonasal tract, with histological mimicry of renal cell carcinoma.

Case presentation

We present a case of sinonasal renal cell-like carcinoma in a 63-year-old male patient. Computer tomography(CT) scanning revealed a soft tissue mass at the left nasal cavity and choana. Histologically, the predominant tumor architecture was follicular to glandular with intervening fibrous septa. The tumor cells were uniform cuboidal to polyhedral with abundant clear or eosinophilic cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were strongly positive for CK7, EMA, vimentin, SOX10, S-100, and focally positive for CA9. During 6 months of follow-up, there was no clinical or radiological evidence of recurrence or metastasis.

Conclusion

SRCLC has microscopic features which overlap with tumors that contain clear cells. Thus, several other tumors must be considered in the differential diagnosis of a tumor of the sinonasal region with clear cells, especially metastatic renal clear cell carcinoma. SRCLC is an indolent tumor and none of the reported SRCLC patients had metastatic disease.

The exact role that bone marrow (BM)-derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) play in tumor neovascularization is heavily debated. We develop a quantitative three-compartment model with predictive power regarding the dynamics of tumorigenesis. There are two distinct processes by which tumor neovasculature can be built: angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessels from preexisting vessels; vasculogenesis is the formation of new vessels by recruiting circulating EPCs. We show that vasculogenesis-driven and angiogenesis-driven tumors grow in different ways. (i) If angiogenesis is the prevailing process, then the tumor mass (and volume) will grow as a cubic power of time, and BM-derived EPCs will stay at a constant level. (ii) If vasculogenesis is the dominant process, then the tumor mass will be characterized by a linear growth in time, and the number of circulating EPCs (after possibly increasing to a maximum) will decrease to low levels. With this information, one can identify the "signature" of each of the processes in the observations of tumor growth and the dynamics of the relevant characteristics, such as the level of BM-derived EPCs. We show how our results can help explain some apparently contradictory experimental data. We also propose ways to couple this study with directed experiments to identify the exact role of vasculogenesis in tumor progression.  相似文献
