Semen was collected from six adult (3.5-7-year-old) Murrah buffalo bulls at weekly intervals for 1 year and evaluated for routine parameters, motion characteristics, reactivity in hypoosmotic solution, and acrosomal and other morphological abnormalities of the spermatozoa. The overall motility (MOT), straight line velocity (VSL), curvilinear velocity (VCL), linearity (LIN), lateral head displacement (ALH) and average path velocity (VAP) were 66.85+/-2.79%, 26.58+/-0.24 and 107.07+/-1.47 microm/s, 26.91+/-0.01%, 11.19+/-0.09 and 61.78+/-2.79 microm/s, respectively. Significant seasonal variation was observed in sperm kinematics and hypoosmotic swelling (HOS) reactivity. Except for LIN, the mean values of sperm dynamics were higher during summer and rainy season and significantly lower in winter season. Sperm kinematics showed significant (P<0.01) positive correlation (r=0.25-0.60) with plasmallemal integrity. Ejaculates with less than 50% HOS-reactive spermatozoa had significantly lowered MOT, VSL, VCL and VAP as compared to the ejaculates with >50% HOS-positive spermatozoa. No significant difference was observed in sperm kinematics among the ejaculates having 50-70% and >70% HOS-reactive spermatozoa. The trend of motion dynamics of the spermatozoa with respect to HOS reactivity was similar in all the three seasons (summer, rainy and winter). The results indicate that ejaculates having more than 50% of HOS-reactive sperm show a higher magnitude of sperm kinematics compared to ejaculates having less than 50% HOS-positive spermatozoa.  相似文献

The present study was conducted in Hariana and Sahiwal cows to study neutrophil functional dynamics during different seasons (summer, rainy and winter) in terms of expression of toll like receptor 2 & 4, neutrophils’ apoptosis in terms of caspase 3, 7 activities, and transmembrane mitochondrial potential. Blood samples were collected from Hariana (n = 10) and Sahiwal cows (n = 10) throughout the year to evaluate the effects of season on neutrophil dynamics. In each season, eight blood samples were collected from each animal (twice in each month). Toll-like receptor 2 and 4 expressions were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in neutrophils during summer season as compared to rainy and winter seasons. Significantly, (p < 0.05) higher caspase 3 & 7 activities and significantly higher per cent of neutrophils with low transmembrane mitochondrial potential indicating its enhanced apoptosis were found during extreme summer and lowest during winter. Both Sahiwal and Hariana breeds exhibited similar trends in neutrophil apoptosis. The results of the study evidently indicate that neutrophil competence varies from season to season in zebu cattle and could determine the possible incidences of infections in these cows. Hot-humid season could be conducive for microbial infections owing to accelerated apoptosis of neutrophils and down regulation of TLR2 and TLR4 of immune cells of zebu cattle.  相似文献

Altogether 218 frozen semen AI doses, prepared between 1980 and 1989 and also between 2003 and 2005 from 18 AI Thai swamp buffalo sires, were examined to determine whether seasonality affects post-thaw viability, as plasma membrane integrity (PMI, using SYBR-14/PI), plasma membrane stability (PMS, using Annexin-V/PI), or motility (Mot, using CASA). A thermoresistance test (38 degrees C for 60 min) was used to further analyze sperm survivability in vitro. All variables were compared over 3 seasons of the year (rainy: July-October; winter: November-February; and summer: March-June), with distinct ambient temperature and humidity. PMI (% of alive spermatozoa) was higher in winter (54.6%, P<0.001) than in the rainy (43.5%) or summer (46.7%) seasons. Outcomes of PMS (Annexin-V/PI assay) confirmed those of PMI, the highest PMS in spermatozoa processed in winter (55.7%, P<0.001). Spermatozoa depicting linear Mot post-thaw ranged from 48.2% to 48.8% across seasons (ns), proportions that decreased during incubation (33.5-37.9%), albeit without seasonal differences. The mean percentages of straight linear velocity (VSL), average path velocity (VAP), or curvilinear velocity (VCL) were higher (P<0.05-0.001) in the rainy season than in winter or summer, while average lateral head displacement (ALH) was higher (P<0.05) in summer, differences maintained after incubation. In conclusion, post-thaw PMS and PMI, assessed by flow cytometry, were significantly better in sperm samples processed during winter than in samples processed during the other seasons of the year, a seasonal difference not picked up by CASA, probably due to the larger number of spermatozoa assessed.  相似文献

Earlier, we reported the impact of season on neutrophils’ functional competence and also hypothesized that it could be the impact of different seasons on neutrophils’ activation. In cerebration, the present study aimed to provide insights into neutrophils’ activation in terms of phosphorylation of tyrosine containing proteins during different seasons. Ten Hariana cows participated in the study and eight times blood samples were collected from each animal (twice in each month) during each season. Phosphorylation of tyrosine proteins was evaluated using western blotting and immunolocalization using a fluorescent microscope. Immuno blotting identified six tyrosine-phophorylated proteins p28, p42, p44, p58, p84, and p104 in winter and rainy seasons, whereas, p84 protein was absent in summer season. Immunolocalization revealed positive immune reactivity (IR) for tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins and significantly (p < 0.05) lower percent of neutrophils showed positive IR during the summer season as compared to winter and rainy seasons. The results of the study evidently indicate the activation of neutrophils is mediated through tyrosine phosphorylation and this may be a probable reason behind the decreased neutrophils’ functional competence during the summer. Further studies are warranted to decipher the possible association between tyrosine phosphorylation and expression of surface receptors required for the recruitment of neutrophils.  相似文献

The present study investigated the peripheral plasma inhibin levels in relation to 1) the stage of estrous cycle and the effect of climatic variations. Blood samples were collected from cyclic buffalo (n=5) once daily for 32 consecutive days during the tropical hot humid (summer) and cold (winter) seasons. Estrus was recorded by parading a vasectomized bull as well as by plasma progesterone determination. In the winter season, peripheral inhibin concentrations which were lowest (0.35 +/- 0.02 ng/ml) during the mid-luteal phase of estrous cycle (Day 6 to Day 14, Day 0 = day of estrus) increased significantly (P < 0.02) to 0.47 +/- 0.04 ng/ml during the late luteal phase (Day -4 to Day -2) and then further to 0.52 +/- 0.03 ng/ml (P< 0.02) during the periestrus phase (Day -1 to Day 1). Inhibin concentrations then decreased significantly (P < 0.02) to 0.40 +/- 0.03 ng/ml during the early luteal phase (Day 2 to Day 5). In the summer season the differences in peripheral inhibin concentrations among different phases of estrous cycle were found to be nonsignificant. A comparison of the circulating inhibin concentrations between the two seasons indicated that inhibin concentrations were significantly higher in the late luteal phase (P < 0.01) and periestrus phase (P < 0.05) during the winter season compared with corresponding periods during the summer season. The present study suggests that peripheral inhibin concentrations change in the estrous cycle during cooler breeding season and that environmental heat stress can cause a reduction in peripheral inhibin concentrations.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in ultrastructure of locomotory muscle were quantified after acclimatization to natural temperature and photoperiod. Only modest changes were seen in the volume density (V(v)) of mitochondria in slow fibers ranging from 0.21 +/- 0.01 (summer) to 0.24 +/- 0.01 (winter), despite an increase in fiber size from 945 +/- 19 to 1,594 +/- 46 microm(2), respectively, resulting in a significantly greater total mitochondrial volume at low temperatures. In contrast, intracellular lipid stores showed a marked change with season, from a maximum V(v) of lipid droplets of 0.16 +/- 0.01 in winter, progressively declining through spring and summer to a minimum of 0.07 +/- 0.01 in autumn. For both organelles, the surface density reflected changes in V(v), indicating little modification of structure. Seasonal effects may dominate those of environmental temperature on mitochondrial separation, which in winter and spring fish at 4(o)C averaged 0.64 +/- 0.06 and 1.20 +/- 0.07 microm, respectively. The extracellular transport of oxygen also varies with season, the peak capillary density in autumn (2,851 +/- 88 mm(-2)) resulting in a minimum tissue supply (domain) area of 529 +/- 9 microm(2) per capillary. As a consequence, the predicted intracellular PO(2) ( approximately 2.5 kPa) is similar throughout the year.  相似文献

A number of studies in free-ranging and captive spider monkeys (Ateles spp.) have shown that this genus is able to reproduce throughout the entire year. Nonetheless, it is still controversial whether births, and therefore conceptions, tend to be more frequent during certain seasons. In the present study, we monitored changes in fecal 17beta-estradiol and progesterone for approximately 1 years in five female black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) kept in captivity in Mexico City. The objective was to determine whether hormone concentrations and menstrual cycles of summer and autumn accounted for a greater chance of conception than those of winter and spring, consistent with birth patterns previously reported. We collected fecal samples from the five monkeys almost daily for 1 year (March 2004 to February 2005) and used radioimmunoassay of fecal extracts to determine concentrations of 17beta-estradiol and progesterone. Concurrently, menstrual cycle phases were determined by cytological evaluation of vaginal swabs. Periovulatory 17beta-estradiol concentrations were significantly higher in autumn than in winter, spring or summer. Moreover, as evidenced by progesterone peaks, most of the summer-autumn menstrual cycles were ovulatory; in contrast, most of the winter and spring cycles were anovulatory. In conclusion, our data supported the notion that, although not a strictly seasonal reproducer, the black-handed spider monkey is more likely to conceive at the end of the rainy season and throughout autumn.  相似文献

Field evaluation of juvenile in vitro embryo transfer (JIVET) in sheep   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The practicality of using juvenile in vitro embryo transfer (JIVET) on a field scale in China was evaluated in each of three seasons (summer, autumn and winter) from 2006 to 2007. A total of 102 donor Merino lambs (18 summer, 69 autumn and 15 winter) aged 4-8 weeks were stimulated with 4 x 40 mg FSH administered at 12h intervals plus 400 IU PMSG given at the time of the first FSH treatment. Overall, 89.2% (91/102) of the lambs exhibited follicle development and 79.1+/-65.5 (mean+/-S.D.) cumulus-oocyte complexes were recovered per donor lamb. Compared with the groups of summer (84.9+/-55.3) and autumn (83.6+/-70.8) lambs, the number of recovered cumulus-oocyte complexes was significantly decreased in winter (51.4+/-43.7; p<0.05). After recovery, the cumulus-oocyte complexes were matured and fertilized in vitro using frozen-thawed semen and culture in synthetic oviduct fluid medium to the 2-4-c stage of development, when they were transferred surgically in groups of 3-8 (5.33+/-1.47) to the ipsilateral uterine horn of a total of 603 synchronized recipients. The overall mean proportion of cumulus-oocyte complexes developing to 2-c embryos was 61.4% (4308/7013) and differed significantly between seasons (summer 38.5%, autumn 66.1%, winter 74.6%; p<0.01). Pregnancy rate assessed by ultrasound examination approximately 60 days after embryo transfer was 54.4% (328/603) overall, and 36.7% (221/603) of the recipients maintained their pregnancy to full-term, producing an average 1.49 (330/221) offspring, of which 1.21 (267/221) were viable and healthy lambs, per pregnant recipient. Pregnancy rate at day 60 was affected by season (summer 40.5%, autumn 56.7%, winter 55.7%; p<0.05), but did not differ significantly between seasons at full-term (summer 34.2%, autumn 38.9%, winter 30.4%; p>0.05). Based on the number of donors stimulated, the total number of offspring and viable progeny produced per donor lamb in autumn (5.81 and 4.87) was significantly (p<0.01) higher than that of summer (2.79 and 1.94) and winter (4.24 and 3.31). This study showed that each donor lamb after stimulation produced an average of 48.6 transferable embryos that resulted in 4.04 viable and healthy progeny. These results indicate that JIVET is a cost-effective method of multiplying desirable sheep genotypes in China.  相似文献

Summary The present investigation deals with the seasonal succession of fungal communities in wheat fields. The studies were performed during the year 1975–76 and involved four study seasons,viz. winter (1975), summer (1975), rainy (1975) and winter (1976). The observations during two winter seasons were done to find out whether or not fungal communities exhibit definite cyclic pattern. Of the 69 isolated species, 25 showed wider ecological amplitude whereas some species were specific of a particular season. Each season was marked by different fungal mycoflora. The population ofAspergillus terreus, a dominant member of the community, along with many other autochthonous species, exhibited a definite periodicity during various seasons. Seasonal variations in the fungal communities, variations in the extent of similarity among the fungal communities during various seasons and the impact of climatic conditions on the components of fungal communities are discussed.  相似文献

Although season has been shown to affect bull sperm quality and fertility in some studies, the effect of season on seminal plasma proteins has not been examined. In the present study, seminal plasma proteins were analysed by Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC), to separate the phosphorylcholine-binding proteins and heparin-binding proteins from the other proteins. Semen samples were collected from bulls in three seasons: winter, summer and the rainy season. Sperm quality was analysed by flow cytometry and computer assisted sperm analysis, and further aliquots of semen were used to prepare the seminal plasma for FPLC. Meteorological data were available from a location close to the bull station. There were slight differences in sperm kinematics between seasons, but other parameters of sperm quality were not different. Minor differences in the phosphorylcholine-binding proteins were detected according to season, being lower in summer than in winter or in the rainy season, although there were no changes in the heparin-binding proteins. Temperature, humidity and rainfall differed between winter and the rainy season, but no differences were observed between summer and the rainy season except in the temperature humidity index (THI). However, the THI was above the threshold indicative of heat stress in all seasons, which could explain why few seasonal differences in protein composition were detected in this study. Alternatively, the bulls could have been well-adapted to heat stress. In conclusion, there were only slight differences in bull sperm quality and seminal plasma proteins between seasons during this study.  相似文献

Reproduction in round-eared elephant shrews occurred throughout the year. Male round-eared elephant shrews were spermatogenically active, with spermatozoa stored in the cauda epididymes, throughout the year. Pregnant females occurred in all months except March and May and there was a decline in the occurrence of pregnancies during early winter (March-July). This tendency towards seasonality of pregnancies was mirrored by the appearance of juveniles, with 77% of all young animals caught between September and February. Bone calcium concentrations were significantly lower during the dry winter than during summer. From October onwards (the beginning of the wet season), bone calcium concentrations increased, reaching high levels in December which were maintained until April. This increase in bone calcium concentrations coincided with the rainy season and with an increase in the intake of herbage, and during this period 60% of all pregnancies occurred. We conclude that the ability of the round-eared elephant shrew to vary its diet may allow some individuals to breed throughout the year. The reduction in the occurrence of pregnancies in early winter probably ensures that few births occur when bone calcium concentrations are low.  相似文献

Questions: We asked several linked questions about phenology and precipitation relationships at local, landscape, and regional spatial scales within individual seasons, between seasons, and between year temporal scales. (1) How do winter and summer phenological patterns vary in response to total seasonal rainfall? (2) How are phenological rates affected by the previous season rainfall? (3) How does phenological variability differ at landscape and regional spatial scales and at season and inter‐annual temporal scales? Location: Southern Arizona, USA. Methods: We compared satellite‐derived phenological variation between 38 distinct 625‐km2 landscapes distributed in the northern Sonoran Desert region from 2000 to 2007. Regression analyses were used to identify relationships between landscape phenology dynamics in response to precipitation variability across multiple spatial and temporal scales. Results: While both summer and winter seasons show increases of peak greenness and peak growth with more precipitation, the timing of peak growth was advanced with more precipitation in winter, while the timing of peak greenness was advanced with more precipitation in summer. Surprisingly, summer maximum growth was negatively affected by winter precipitation. The spatial variations between summer and winter phenology were similar in magnitude and response. Larger‐scale spatial and temporal variation showed strong differences in precipitation patterns; however the magnitudes of phenological spatial variability in these two seasons were similar. Conclusions: Vegetation patterns were clearly coupled to precipitation variability, with distinct responses at alternative spatial and temporal scales. Disaggregating vegetation into phenological variation, spanning value, timing, and integrated components revealed substantial complexity in precipitation‐phenological relationships.  相似文献

Immunity of mammary gland in terms of in vitro activity of milk leukocytes has been evaluated during hot-humid, summer, and winter season in elite (n = 10) and non-elite (n = 10) crossbred cows. Milk samples were collected from all the cows throughout the year at 15-day interval. Milk somatic cell counts (SCC) and differential leukocyte counts (DLC) were evaluated microscopically. Milk neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes were isolated and cultured in vitro. In vitro PI of milk neutrophils and macrophages was evaluated by colorimetric NBT (nitro-blue tetrazolium) reductive assay. Mitogen-induced milk lymphocyte blastogenic response was measured by colorimetric MTT (thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide) assay. Milk SCC was found to be significantly (p < 0.01) higher in elite cows compared to non-elite cows irrespective of season. There was significant (p < 0.05) increase in milk SCC during hot-humid season compared to winter season in both the group of the cows. There was no significant difference between group and season in terms of DLC. In vitro phagocytic index of elite cows was significantly (p < 0.01) higher than non-elite cows. The phagocytic index was significantly (p < 0.01) decreased in summer and hot-humid season compared to winter season in both the group of animals. Macrophages isolated from elite cows having significantly (p < 0.01) lower phagocytic index than non-elite cows which significantly (p < 0.01) decreased during summer and hot-humid season compared to winter. In vitro milk lymphocyte proliferative response was significantly (p < 0.01) lower in elite cows. Activity of B-lymphocytes decreased significantly (p < 0.01) during summer and hot-humid season than winter, but activity of T-lymphocytes remains unaltered during different seasons. In conclusion, the mammary immunity in terms of in vitro activity of milk leukocytes is compromised during summer and hot-humid season in elite crossbred cows; therefore, better care and management should be taken in high-yielding cows during summer and hot-humid season to minimize intramammary infections.  相似文献

The eating habits of workers may vary according to the season of the year and corresponding work schedule. A study aiming at verifying the changes in their diet in summer and winter, as well as the nutritional status of those who work fixed shifts, was conducted. The distribution during the 24h in the quantity of calories and macronutrients ingested and the circadian rhythm of calories consumed were also analyzed. The study was conducted on 28 workers subject to three fixed work (morning, afternoon, and night) shifts at a transport company in the city of S?o Paulo, Brazil. The mean age of the workers was 32.8 (SD+/-5.3) yrs. Their food intake was ascertained by the use of a 3-day dietary record, and their nutritional status was evaluated by their body mass index (BMI), both in winter and summer. Two-way ANOVA (shift and season) showed food consumption--measured in calories/24 h--was significantly higher in winter than summer (F(1.25)=11.7; p<0.001). No statistically significant differences were found among shifts (F(2.25)=0.85; p<0.44), and the interaction effect between shift and season was also not significant (F(2.25) = 0.15; p < 0.86). No seasonal difference in BMI was detected (Kruskal-Wallis test). Cosinor analyses showed circadian rhythmicity in calories consumed by morning (p < 0.01) as well as afternoon shift workers (p < 0.001), both in the winter and summer. Circadian rhythmicity in calories consumed by night workers was found only in summer (p < 0.01). The changes observed in the workers' eating habits from one season to another and during the 24h period show the need for further studies to help develop educational programs to improve the nutrition of shift employees taking into consideration shift schedule and season of the year when work is performed.  相似文献

The present study was aimed at comparing the number of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) propagules found in soil from a mature tropical forest and that found in an abandoned cornfield in Noh-Bec Quintana Roo, Mexico, during three seasons. Agricultural practices can dramatically reduce the availability and viability of AMF propagules, and in this way delay the regeneration of tropical forests in abandoned agricultural areas. In addition, rainfall seasonality, which characterizes deciduous tropical forests, may strongly influence AMF propagules density. To compare AMF propagule numbers between sites and seasons (summer rainy, winter rainy and dry season), a “most probable number” (MPN) bioassay was conducted under greenhouse conditions employing Sorgum vulgare L. as host plant. Results showed an average value of 3.5 ± 0.41 propagules in 50 ml of soil for the mature forest while the abandoned cornfield had 15.4 ± 5.03 propagules in 50 ml of soil. Likelihood analysis showed no statistical differences in MPN of propagules between seasons within each site, or between sites, except for the summer rainy season for which soil from the abandoned cornfield had eight times as many propagules compared to soil from the mature forest site for this season. Propagules of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi remained viable throughout the sampling seasons at both sites. Abandoned areas resulting from traditional slash and burn agriculture practices involving maize did not show a lower number of AMF propagules, which should allow the establishment of mycotrophic plants thus maintaining the AMF inoculum potential in these soils.  相似文献

Although sheep are known to be seasonal breeders and give birth in winter, not all of them follow this trend. A few breeds can be mated and give birth all year round, meaning that mothers and neonates will have to face contrasting climatic conditions. The aim of this study was to test whether lambing season affects maternal and neonatal behaviors in D’man sheep. During four different lambing seasons (winter, autumn, summer and spring), periparturient ewes (n = 111) and their lambs (n = 213) were kept under 24-h-video surveillance in order to record postpartum behaviors. Mother-young preference was tested around 48 h after parturition. Lamb vigor was studied by the determination of birth weight, early postnatal behavior and rectal temperature at birth and 48 h later. Litter expulsion time was not affected by lambing season, but birth weight was biased against summer and winter born lambs. Ewes provided a higher intensity of care to their offspring in winter: latency for grooming was shorter and time spent grooming was longer compared to lambing in spring and summer (P = 0.01 in all cases). On the other hand, lambs were the most active in spring as they were faster to extend their hind legs (P = 0.01), stand up (P = 0.04) and reach the udder (P = 0.04). Rectal temperature at 48 h was affected by season of birth (P < 0.001) with higher values observed in summer. Glycemia variation between birth and 48 h was the lowest in spring born lambs and plasma levels increased less in spring born lambs than in winter (P < 0.0001), autumn (P < 0.0001) and summer born lambs (P < 0.0001). In the choice test, mothers clearly preferred their own young and no season effect was detected except that in the first minute of the test they spent less time near their own young in winter than in the other seasons (P = 0.04). Lambs also chose their mother successfully without any major effect of the season however, but winter born lambs were the least vocal (P = 0.01). Overall, this study show that maternal care, lamb behavior and vigor vary lightly according to seasons, albeit not in a consistent manner. In conclusion, a season is no more detrimental than another for the onset of mother-young relationships.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to examine differential expression pattern of HSP genes and adaptability in Indian goat breeds of semi-arid region. The study was conducted in five animals from each breed viz. Barbari, Sirohi, and Jhakrana during winter, thermo-neutral and summer seasons. The respiratory rate (RR) and rectal temperature (RT) of the goats were recorded at 09:00 h during the study period. The blood samples were collected for RNA isolation, cDNA synthesis, and quantitative analysis of HSP genes expression by quantitative RT-PCR. The RR increased significantly (p < 0.01) during summer as compared to winter and thermo-neutral season however, RT did not change (p > 0.05) during different seasons. The expression of HSP genes was significantly (p < 0.01) increased during summer (high THI) as compared to thermo-neutral season in all the goat breeds. Among HSPs, only HSP90 was upregulated (p < 0.01) in Jhakrana goats during winter as compared to thermo-neutral season. The deviation in expression of HSP genes during summer and winter with respect to thermo-neutral season was minimum in Barbari goats. Therefore, it can be concluded that Barbari goats possessed better adaptability during summer and winter as compared to Sirohi and Jhakrana goats in semi-arid climatic conditions of India.  相似文献

Lyngbya major (a wall alga), survived throughout year, maximally to >80 % at atmospheric temperature (AT) of 17-36 degrees C and relative humidity (RH) 60-100 % in rainy and spring seasons, but the survival was 43-64 % in winter when AT decreased to 5 degrees C and RH was 65-98 %, and 15-23 % in summer when AT reached 48 degrees C and RH was 23-60 %. All soil algae (Lyngbya birgei, Aphanothece pallida, Gloeocapsa atrata, Oscillatoria subbrevis, O. animalis) survived >90 % in rainy season when soil moisture content (SMC) was 89-100 %. Lowering of SMC to a minimum of 55 % in spring and 39 % in winter led L. birgei, O. subbrevis and O. animalis to survive from 75, 66, and 65 %, respectively, in spring and 12, 14, and 20 % in winter, and A. pallida and G. atrata not at all in both seasons. All soil algae did not survive in summer when SMC was 12-30 %. Myxosarcina burmensis survived only in rainy and spring seasons when pond water temperature (PWT) was 19-25 degrees C and 18-26 degrees C, respectively, and not in winter and summer when PWT was 2-14 degrees C and 25-36 degrees C, respectively. L. major and A. pallida survived almost equally well under both submerged and air-exposed conditions for 15 d but less if submerged for more time than air-exposed on moist soil surface, while L. birgei, G. atrata, O. subbrevis, and O. animalis survived submergence in liquid medium better and longer than air-exposure on moist soil surface. Pond alga M. burmensis survived submergence better than air-exposure, true to its aquatic habitat. All algae survived less and died without forming any resistant cells when exposed to physical and physiological water stress (imposed by growing them on highly agarized media or in salinized liquid media), light stress (at 0, 2 and 10 mumol m(-2) s(-1) light intensity) or following UV shock (0.96-3.84 kJ/m(2)). A. pallida and G. atrata cells did not divide on 8 % agarized solid media, in >/=0.3 mol/L salinized liquid media, and in darkness. The presence of sheath over L. major and L. birgei filament cells and mucilage cover over A. pallida and G. atrata cells protect them against physical desiccation to some extent but not against UV shock.  相似文献

Temporal changes of assemblages may result from environmental variability and reflect seasonal dynamics of their ecosystem. In the subtropics, the hydrological regime is usually characterized by well‐defined wet and dry seasons, regulating discharge and influencing a series of environmental variables that affect phytoplankton persistence. Therefore, we may expect that dry seasons are environmentally more stable than wet seasons. We analysed interannual phytoplankton assemblage variability (or, inversely, persistence) in a subtropical reservoir sampled every austral summer and winter during 5 years. We tested (i) if phytoplankton assemblage structure differed between the dry (summer) and wet (winter) seasons; (ii) if assemblage persistence differed between the seasons; (iii) if assemblage persistence was related to environmental stability; and (iv) if assemblage dissimilarity increased over time. Phytoplankton assemblages differed between the summer and winter seasons. Winter indicator species were mostly Bacillariophyceae or Cryptophyceae, whereas Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae taxa were more frequent and abundant in summer. Assemblages in the dry season were more persistent among years than those occurring during rainy periods. Similarly, environmental variability tended to be lower among dry than among rainy seasons. The relation between the phytoplankton temporal cycle and the temporal patterns of environmental variability supports our prediction that high environmental stability results in more persistent assemblages. Assemblage dissimilarity increased as sampling years were farther apart, for both seasons. Additionally, assemblages in the rainy periods showed a more pronounced increase in dissimilarity, as their changes among years were less predictable. We found a clear temporal pattern and an increased dissimilarity over time in the phytoplankton assemblage structure. Unravelling these temporal patterns may improve our understanding of phytoplankton temporal dynamics, and may have implications for management and monitoring programs. High dissimilarity of assemblages among years, particularly among rainy periods, can obscure human impacts, and monitoring programs should take this into account.  相似文献

The abundance, distribution and composition of the macrozooplankton of Culebra Bay, Costa Rica (10 degrees 38' N - 85 degrees 40' W) were studied at four stations throughout the dry (February-May) and rainy (September-November) seasons of 2000. The samples were collected at two-week intervals using a 500 microm mesh net with a 0.5 m diameter opening. Copepods (23-31%) and ostracods (20-34%) were predominant throughout the year, followed by cladocerans (2.5-14%), zoea (6.6-9.5%), and siphonophores (2.5-7.2%). High densities of zooplankton were obtained in February and March with peak abundance on March 18. The lowest densities were observed on September 3 and November 5. Significant differences in abundances at each station were observed for the groups Acartia tonsa (Copepoda), Ctenophora, Medusae, Ostracoda, Zoea, and Amphipoda. Comparison of the dry and rainy seasons revealed significantly higher zooplankton abundance in the dry season and copepod domination of all stations; during the rainy season ostracods dominated the off-shore areas. Zooplankton abundance and distribution are influenced by upwelling, which occurs during the dry season in Culebra Bay.  相似文献
