1. Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is an invasive non‐native ladybird in Europe, where it was introduced as a biological control agent of aphids and coccids. 2. This study assesses changes to ladybird species assemblages, in arboreal habitats, over a 3‐year period encompassing the invasion phase of H. axyridis in eastern England. The effects of H. axyridis and other factors (weather and prey availability) on native ladybirds are assessed. 3. Harmonia axyridis increased from 0.1% to 40% of total ladybirds sampled, whilst native aphidophagous species declined from 84% to 41% of total ladybirds. The actual number of native aphidophagous ladybirds per survey decreased from a mean of 19.7 in year 1, to 10.2 in year 3. 4. Three ladybird species in particular experienced declines: Adalia bipunctata, Coccinella septempunctata, and Propylea quattuordecimpunctata. Harmonia axyridis was the most abundant species by the end of the study. 5. The decline in native aphidophagous ladybirds could be attributed to competition for prey and intraguild predation of eggs, larvae, and pupae by H. axyridis. Physiological and behavioural traits of H. axyridis are likely to confer an advantage over native ladybird species.  相似文献

We evaluated the status of native ladybird assemblages in the presence of the non-native ladybird Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in three European countries. To achieve this, we assessed the abundance of ladybirds from common host plants in urban areas of Great Britain, Czech Republic and Slovak Republic in 2014. We determined (i) the effects of season, host plant, location, abundance of H. axyridis and aphids on the ladybird species assemblage, (ii) the relationship between ladybird abundance and aphid density, (iii) the relationship between diversity of native ladybird species and the abundance of H. axyridis. There was a non-linear relationship between abundance of ladybirds and abundance of aphids but we found the abundance of other ladybird species was not correlated with H. axyridis. We highlight the value of large-spatial scale studies for revealing patterns in community assemblages and ultimately informing understanding of ecosystem resilience.  相似文献

Some species of ladybird beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) mate both before and after overwintering. The purpose of the pre-diapause mating was studied in the alien invasive ladybird Harmonia axyridis (Pallas 1773). Our study demonstrates the persistence of high fecundity (daily oviposition rate of 21 eggs per fertilized female during the first month of reproduction) and fertility (85 % of eggs hatching) of females of H. axyridis after long storage (up to eight months) at low temperature (6 °C). The females were not mated after activation in spring and had to rely on the sperm supply maintained from the pre-winter period (58 % of females were fertilized). Unfertilized females also laid eggs but in low numbers (an average of 345 eggs by virgin females during an individual’s lifetime, 1,174 eggs by females fertilized before winter) and after a longer pre-oviposition period (2–5 weeks in comparison to 7–8 days for fertilized females). We show that the unfertilised eggs were not trophic eggs. The high sperm survival ability observed questions the need for the high levels of sexual activity generally observed in Coccinellidae. Fertilized females of H. axyridis may found large colonies after dispersal to new areas even without males, which contributes to the striking invasive ability of this species.  相似文献

After establishment of Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Europe, population densities of native ladybird species have decreased. The post-hibernation onset of female reproduction, a key characteristic influencing population dynamics and competition with related species, was studied. Hibernating individuals were collected and transferred to outdoor cages to continue overwintering. Every two weeks a sample of individuals was transferred to long-day, warm conditions. Intensity of dormancy was studied by determining the pre-oviposition period and ovarian development. Pre-oviposition periods were short throughout our observations, indicating that Harmonia axyridis was not in diapause but in a quiescent state. H. axyridis becomes active rapidly when temperature rises in spring but is not active earlier in the year than native species. Neither the mode of overwintering, nor the onset of spring activity can explain the invasion success of H. axyridis.  相似文献

Ladybirds face a diversity of potential predators from which their main protection is powerful alkaloid-based chemical defence. In the laboratory, adults of the European orb-web spider Araneus diadematus Clerck readily consumed the native European ladybird Coccinella septempunctata L. and non-melanics and melanics of the exotic Harmonia axyridis (Pallas). The spider was little deterred by their defensive chemistry and apparently suffered no ill effects after eating ladybirds. This is particularly notable for H. axyridis, which possesses a novel alkaloid not known from European ladybirds and to which European predators are not expected to be adapted. Examination of inhabited A. diadematus webs and experimental determination of for how long captured ladybirds remained in webs indicated that ≤2% of spiders consume a ladybird each day. Ladybirds and A. diadematus are probably complementary rather than antagonistic in controlling crop pests, with ladybirds being at greatest risk from A. diadematus predation in autumn, during migration to overwintering sites.  相似文献

1. Few, if any, experimental tests have demonstrated the anti‐predator protection of the developmental stages of ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) against vertebrates, despite the fact that both the visual appearance of ladybirds and the content of defensive compounds fulfil the definition of an aposematic prey. 2. In this study, avian predators of three species were confronted with fourth‐instar larvae and pupae of the harlequin ladybird (Harmonia axyridis) – a large, conspicuous, and toxic ladybird species. 3. The selected predators differed in their individual experience and attitude to ladybirds. Wild‐caught great tits (Parus major) strongly avoided attacking ladybirds in general, whereas wild‐caught tree sparrows (Passer montanus) were willing to include ladybirds in their diet. Domestic chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus) have never been confronted with ladybirds but usually show avoidance of aposematic signals. In this study, great tits and domestic chicks avoided both developmental stages, but in the case of chicks the avoidance had to be learned over the course of repeated encounters. Sparrow avoidance was significantly lower, with more than one‐third of the prey being attacked and eaten. 4. The protection of both developmental stages of ladybirds is similar to adults, despite substantially different visual appearance.  相似文献

Cold storage of parasitoids to be used in biological control programs is desirable but risky for the performance of the stored parental generation as well as for its offspring. We studied the performance of cold stored and unstored parasitoids after release at different temperature regimes in the laboratory at the level of two subsequent generations in Hyssopus pallidus (Askew) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). This gregarious ectoparasitoid is a candidate biocontrol agent of Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) and Cydia molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) larvae, two fruit pests of high economic significance in apple cultivation. Cold storage for 14 days at 4°C imposed to the pupal stage of the parasitoid did not reduce the parasitism capacity of the parental generation, nor did it alter the female biased sex ratio of the progeny. Remarkably, this short-term storage of the parental generation exhibited a significant and consistently positive effect on offspring weight throughout all ambient temperature regimes, resulting in an increased offspring weight. Furthermore, offspring number was only reduced after release at low ambient temperatures, but not at 25°C and 30°C. Irrespective of whether the parasitoids originated from the stored or unstored group, highest parasitism rate was achieved at temperatures above 20°C. In conclusion, this candidate biocontrol agent can be cold stored for short periods without any measurable quality loss after release at most except at low ambient temperatures. Our findings suggest that H. pallidus is a thermophilous parasitoid that will perform best when applied at warm ambient temperatures in fruit orchards.  相似文献

Cold storage effects on both female adults and eggs of the predatory thrips Franklinothrips vespiformis (Crawford) (Thysanoptera: Aeolothripidae) were investigated. The effect of low temperatures (5.5, 7.0, 8.5, 10.0 and 12.5 °C) on survival of F. vespiformis adults was firstly recorded. Survival times were significantly reduced at the lower temperatures tested, whereas storage at 10.0 and 12.5 °C provided the longest survival. Life-history consequences of exposing adults to moderately low temperatures were examined in terms of pre-oviposition period, oviposition rate, egg viability and survival after storage. Adults stored at 7.0 °C showed longer pre-oviposition period and shorter longevity than unstored females but other reproductive attributes were not significantly affected by storage regime. Low temperature and storage period affected egg viability and subsequent development of pre-imaginal stages. No eggs hatched after a 20-day period of storage at 5.5 and 7.0 °C, whereas eggs stored at 12.5 °C hatched significantly faster than ones stored at 10.0 °C and unstored eggs. Increasing the egg storage period from 10 to 20 and 30 days decreased the oviposition rate of adults and egg viability. An essential component in the successful mass rearing and distribution of these predators is the development of a reliable storage schedule of eggs and adults. Long-term storage was unsatisfactory, however their short-term storage (3.5 weeks at 10.0 and 12.5 °C for adults and 4–5 weeks at 12.5 °C for eggs) gave satisfactory results, which suggest the efficacy of such storage during the mass production of the biocontrol agent.  相似文献

Despite their positive effect in reducing pest populations, exotic generalist predators sometimes become invasive and contribute to the displacement of indigenous species in the same trophic level. Although laboratory experiments have linked intraguild predation (IGP) to these interactions, field evidence and quantification of IGP are still lacking for most systems. The recent establishment of the exotic Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Italy raises concern about the detrimental effect that the ladybird could have on native coccinellids. Here we assessed, under laboratory conditions, the acceptability and suitability of eggs of 2 native ladybirds, Adalia bipunctata L. and Oenopia conglobata (L.), as prey items for H. axyridis larvae. Then we developed primers for molecular gut‐content analysis to detect predation by H. axyridis on the 2 ladybirds and on the aphid Eucallipterus tiliae L. Species‐specific 16S primers were developed for the 3 species and laboratory feeding trials were conducted to quantify the rate of prey DNA breakdown in the gut of H. axyridis. Moreover, to field evaluate primers, H. axyridis 4th instars (n = 132) were systematically collected from linden trees in northern Italy and screened for the presence of prey DNA. Seventy‐three percent and 7% of field collected H. axyridis were positive for aphid and coccinellid DNA, respectively. Predation upon aphid and A. bipunctata was lower than predicted if density dependent consumption was expected, while predation upon O. conglobata was significantly higher. Here, we provided the first evidence of IGP among feral populations of H. axyridis and indigenous ladybird beetles, occurring in Italy.  相似文献

A semi-field experiment was carried out in two peach orchards in northern Italy to assess mortality due to predators and parasitoids on the exotic coccinellid Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in comparison with the native coccinellid Adalia bipunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). The experiments were conducted in cages to avoid the possible escape of the exotic ladybird (not yet established in Italy). Two kinds of cage experiments were included: ‘exclusion cages’ (access by walking predators impeded) and ‘free cages’ (walking predators free to enter). The cages, containing all the stages of the two ladybird species, were placed in two localities and left for 24 h. All ladybird stages used for the semi-field experiments came from a laboratory rearing. The eggs of H. axyridis experienced less mortality than those of A. bipunctata. The ant workers were the most frequent predators in ‘free cages’ but A. bipunctata cannibalism on eggs was also detected. Larvae of both coccinellid species were predated equally but larval predation of L1 and L2 was higher in comparison to predation of L3 and L4. Pupae and adults of both exotic and native ladybirds were never attacked by predators. Predation on younger larval stages was higher in the ‘free cages’ in comparison with ‘exclusion cages’. No ladybird parasitisation was observed. The ‘free cage’ technique seems to provide a standardised and realistic estimation of predation impact but more studies are needed to evaluate ladybird parasitisation in semi-field conditions.  相似文献

Cold storage of insects is a common practice used when transporting insects or to assist with efforts to increase the size of a colony. However, cold storage affects egg, nymphal and adult survival, fecundity, and egg viability. We evaluated the influence of nutrient source on the response of eggs, nymphs and adults of Perillus bioculatus when exposed to two temperatures most likely to be used for short and extended storage by comparing natural prey-fed insects to artificial diet-fed insects. The results of our study showed that the survival of eggs from either prey-fed or diet-fed insects declined at both 4 and 10°C as the length of storage exceeded one week. The survival of nymphs exposed to cold storage treatment was slightly higher than for eggs, with a similar response to time of storage. Unique to the nymphal stage was the superior performance of diet-fed insects over prey-fed insects. However, of the three developmental stages tested, the best survival was obtained with adults. Our results show that both prey-fed and diet-fed adults were able to withstand cold storage at 10°C for three weeks with very little loss of survival, fecundity or viability of eggs oviposited by those adults. Longer periods of storage resulted in a decline in survival, fecundity and egg viability and that decline was greatest at 4°C. Outcross mating of cold stored adults with adults held at 26°C indicated that adult females were more detrimentally affected by cold storage than males. There were differences in the response of P. bioculatus to cold storage compared to previously reported responses of P. maculiventris. However, the most notable difference is that P. maculiventris did better at almost all parameters than P. bioculatus. Collectively, these results demonstrate a nutrient influence on the response to cold storage at different developmental stages.  相似文献

Aim Invasive alien species (IAS) are recognized as major drivers of biodiversity loss, but few causal relationships between IAS and species declines have been documented. In this study, we compare the distribution (Belgium and Britain) and abundance (Belgium, Britain and Switzerland) of formerly common and widespread native ladybirds before and after the arrival of Harmonia axyridis, a globally rapidly expanding IAS. Location Europe Methods We used generalized linear mixed‐effects models (GLMMs) to assess the distribution trends of eight conspicuous and historically widespread and common species of ladybird within Belgium and Britain before and after the arrival of H. axyridis. The distribution data were collated largely through public participatory surveys but verified by a recognized expert. We also used GLMMs to model trends in the abundance of ladybirds using data collated through systematic surveys of deciduous trees in Belgium, Britain and Switzerland. Results Five (Belgium) and seven (Britain) of eight species studied show substantial declines attributable to the arrival of H. axyridis. Indeed, the two‐spot ladybird, Adalia bipunctata, declined by 30% (Belgium) and 44% (Britain) over 5 years after the arrival of H. axyridis. Trends in ladybird abundance revealed similar patterns of declines across three countries. Main conclusion Together, these analyses show H. axyridis to be displacing native ladybirds with high niche overlap, probably through predation and competition. This finding provides strong evidence of a causal link between the arrival of an IAS and decline in native biodiversity. Rapid biotic homogenization at the continental scale could impact on the resilience of ecosystems and severely diminish the services they deliver.  相似文献

Since the late 19th century, exotic ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) have been used extensively for suppressing herbivorous insects of economic importance. In recent decades, the introduction of non‐native biological control (BC) agents has been greatly limited due to the awareness of the potential non‐target effects of introductions. Nonetheless, recent episodes of biological invasions of economically important pests have raised the need to carefully consider whether the expected benefits of pest control go beyond the possible environmental risks of introduction. To better understand the factors that contributed to successful BC programs, here we review the literature behind classical and augmentative BC using exotic ladybirds. Additionally, by means of case studies, we discuss the BC efficacy of selected exotic species, e.g., Coccinella septempunctata L., Harmonia axyridis (Pallas), and Hippodamia variegata (Goeze), and their position within the communities of predators in the introduced areas of USA, Canada, and Chile. In Europe, much of the research on exotic ladybirds has been conducted on the undesired impact of H. axyridis. Therefore, we summarize the risk assessment data for this species and review the field research investigating the ecological impact on European aphidophagous predators. According to the BIOCAT database of classical BC programs, 212 ladybird species belonging to 68 genera have been released in about 130 years of BC activity, with 14.6% of introductions having resulted in partial, substantial, or complete control of the target pest. However, because post‐release evaluation of establishment and BC success has not always been conducted, this rate could underestimate the successful cases. Among other factors, ladybird establishment and pest suppression mostly depend on (1) intrinsic factors, i.e., high voracity, synchronized predator‐prey life cycle, and high dispersal ability, and (2) extrinsic factors, i.e., adaptability to the new environment and landscape composition. This review contributes to improved understanding of ladybirds as exotic BC agents.  相似文献

1. Global warming and biological invasions are important threats to biodiversity. Nonetheless, there is little information on how these factors influence performance or life‐history traits of invasive and native species. 2. The effects of temperature on physiological and fitness traits of two invasive alien species (Harmonia axyridis and Hippodamia variegata) and one native species (Eriopis chilensis) of coccinellid were evaluated, testing a model of eurythermality. Eggs of all species were exposed to four temperature treatments (20, 24, 30 and 33 °C). In adult F2 we measured fecundity, locomotor performance, development time (total and per life stage), survival, and preferred body temperature in a thermal gradient. 3. It was found that H. axyridis had comparatively better performance at low temperatures (i.e. 20 °C), while the performance of H. variegata and E. chilensis did not change with temperature or was better at higher temperatures (30 °C). The standardised Levins index showed that all species are eurythermic. E. chilensis had a high niche overlap with the invasive alien ladybird species, rejecting the hypothesis of greater eurythermality of invasive species than native species. 4. Although there were differences in the temperature preferences and in the response of some physiological and life‐history traits of ladybirds to temperature, both the native and invasive alien species are eurythermic, contrary to the prediction. The better performance of H. axyridis at lower temperatures may result in displacement of its current distribution, and thus not all invasive species will respond favourably to global warming.  相似文献

Invasive alien predators are a serious threat to biodiversity worldwide. However, there is no generic method for assessing which local species are most at risk following the invasion of a new predator. The harlequin ladybird, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), is an alien in Europe and many other parts of the world where it affects other species of ladybirds through competition for food and intra-guild predation (IGP). Here, we describe a method developed to assess which European ladybird species are most at risk following the invasion of H. axyridis. The three components of the risk assessment are: the likelihood that the assessed native species encounters H. axyridis in the field, the hazard of competition for food, and the IGP hazard. Thirty native European ladybird species were assessed through data obtained from field observations, laboratory experiments and literature reviews. The species that are considered most at risk are found on deciduous trees, have immature stages which are highly vulnerable to IGP by H. axyridis, and are primarily aphidophagous. These species should be the focus of specific studies and possibly conservation actions. The risk assessment method proposed here could be applied to other alien predators which are considered a threat to native species through competition and predation.  相似文献

1. The invasive ladybird Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is implicated in declines of native ladybirds with intraguild predation identified as an underlying mechanism, however, less studied are the effects on non‐coccinellid predators. Intraguild predation between Anthocoris nemoralis Fabricius (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) and H. axyridis and the relative effects of inter‐ and intraspecific competition on predators on potted Tilia cordata Mill. was investigated, at two aphid densities. 2. Intraguild predation was unidirectional in favour of H. axyridis in Petri dishes although a low level of ladybird egg predation by A. nemoralis occurred. However, on trees intraguild predation was rare. 3. A positive effect of aphid density on H. axyridis weight gain, and increased survival when reared with A. nemoralis on potted trees indicated stronger effects of intraspecific competition on H. axyridis. Consistent suppression of aphids by ladybirds revealed their superior competition for aphids. 4. Anthocoris nemoralis weight gain was reduced when reared with H. axyridis on potted trees, indicating a potential for a sublethal effect through interspecific competition. Survivorship of A. nemoralis did not differ between con‐ and heterospecific treatments, but high aphid density enhanced A. nemoralis survival. Overall, high mortality among nymphs across treatments suggested effects related to both inter‐ and intraspecific competition for resources. 5. Results provide evidence of a sublethal effect by invasive H. axyridis through resource competition, suggesting that where these predators co‐occur, competitive interactions for shared prey are more likely to affect A. nemoralis populations than intraguild predation by H. axyridis.  相似文献

Cage experiments were used to determine the minimum number of Aphis fabae Scopoli that females of the Azorean native ladybird beetle Coccinella undecimpunctata L. require per day to achieve maximum fecundity and to assess the effects of interference competition from conspecific and heterospecific [Harmonia axyridis (Pallas)] adult ladybirds on its growth and reproduction. The number of A. fabae at which females of C. undecimpunctata ate most aphids, achieved maximum reproduction and maintained their body weight, was 200. The presence of H. axyridis adults, unlike the presence of C. undecimpunctata, significantly affected the reproductive numerical response of C. undecimpunctata even though the resource was not in short supply. The results suggest that interference competition with heterospecifics may adversely affect the reproductive capacity of C. undecimpunctata. Based on previous results and those reported here, we suggest that the introduction of H. axyridis could endanger the population abundance and/or result in the competitive displacement of C. undecimpunctata from the Azorean ecosystem.  相似文献

After examining the effectiveness of preservation methods of the Asian ladybird, Harmonia axyridis, we were able to preserve the overwintering populations of ladybirds in Fabix plastic boxes or milk paper packs at 4°C and 8°C without food over 4 months with an 84% survival rate. Also, by preserving the 3rd and 4th instar larva with microwave popcorn, we were able to decrease cannibalism by reducing the contact frequency between individuals. Although the preserving efficiency somewhat decreased, it was possible to store the ladybird larva with microwave popcorn for up to 10 days without predation. After preservation with microwave popcorn in the incubator at 10°C, the feeding ability related to preservation was investigated. These results showed that there was no difference in aphid predation between the normal individuals and the preserved ones. Finally, the 3rd and 4th instar larva, which were preserved with microwave popcorn, were released in a strawberry greenhouse where the strawberry capitophorus aphid (Chaetosiphon miner) and the strawberry root aphid (Aphis forbesi) had been present. After the release, the changes of aphid population densities were investigated every week for a month.  相似文献

To improve the laboratory mass rearing and the winter greenhouse use of the multicoloured Asian lady beetle Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae), the effects of photoperiod on the development and fecundity of H. axyridis were investigated at 20°C and photoperiods ranging from 0L:24D to 24L:0D. We foun'd photoperiod to significantly affect the pre-imaginal development and reproduction of H. axyridis. The development of the pre-imaginal stage was significantly faster at shorter photoperiods (0–14?h) than at longer ones (16–24?h). The proportion of females laying eggs within the first 30 days after eclosion, the mean number of eggs per ovipositing female, and the long axial length of the first oocyte were all lower at shorter photoperiods (6–12?h) than at longer ones (14–24?h). These results suggest that adult H. axyridis may encounter problems in preying and reproducing in the winter conditions of unheated and unilluminated greenhouses in areas with temperatures lower than 20°C and day lengths shorter than 12?h.  相似文献

Previous studies have suggested that spotted patterns are important in the protection of ladybirds against attack by avian predators. Nevertheless, these studies were based on the comparison of several ladybird species differing in colouration, but also in other traits (e.g., chemical protection). We presented natural as well as artificial colour modifications (using brown, red, and black paint) of the ladybird Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) – an invasive alien species for Europe – to an avian predator, the great tit, Parus major L. (Passeriformes: Paridae). All forms were considered to be equal in size, but differed in colouration and in the presence of spots. The chemical protection was equal except for one form. The birds displayed strong avoidance of all forms with red and black colouration; beetles with artificially removed red colouration (painted brown) were attacked more often. The beetles painted brown with black spots were slightly better protected than the painted beetles without spots. We can sum up that spots are of some importance in the protection of ladybirds; nevertheless, red and black colouration is the main part of the visual signal.  相似文献
