Teliospore walls, teliospore germinations, hyphal septations, cellular interactions, and nucleotide sequences from the D1/D2 region of the nuLSU rRNA gene of the marine smut fungi Melanotaenium ruppiae and Ustilago marina were examined and compared with findings in other Ustilaginomycotina. The data show that Melanotaenium ruppiae belongs to the Urocystaceae and Ustilago marina to the Ustilaginaceae. Within the Urocystaceae, Melanotaenium ruppiae is morphologically similar to Melanustilospora and Vankya. However, according to the molecular results Melanotaenium ruppiae can neither be ascribed to Melanustilospora nor to Vankya. Therefore, the new genus Flamingomyces is proposed for Melanotaenium ruppiae. Ustilago marina differs from the other Ustilaginaceae in the mode of sporulation, which exclusively occurs at the base of the host plant culms. Accordingly, the new genus Parvulago is proposed for Ustilago marina.  相似文献

Three new species of Oxalis sect. Polymorphae are here described and illustrated: Oxalis artemioides, O. calcicola, and O. monochasiata. These species have narrow geographic distributions, each being known from just one location. Oxalis artemioides differs from other species of the section by the glabrous stem, narrow terminal leaflets (8–10.5 × 2 mm), and inflorescences with elongated dichasial branches bearing flowers only in the distal portion. Oxalis calcicola differs from other species by having the young stem with adpressed-retrorse trichomes, inflorescences shorter than adjacent leaves, short dichasial branches (0.5–3 mm long) with flowers densely grouped along the entire length, and glabrous pedicels. Oxalis monochasiata is remarkable because of its monochasial inflorescence and the two-ovulate carpels, both features unique within Oxalis sect. Polymorphae. The new species are compared to similar species of the section, and information on distribution and habitat, phenology, and conservation status according with IUCN criteria are provided. Geographic distribution maps, lists of examined materials and an identification key for species of this section are also presented.  相似文献

TheOxalis tuberosa alliance is a group of morphologically similarOxalis species allied to the Andean tuber crop oca,O. tuberosa. Originally described by cytologists as a dozen species sharing a base chromosome number rare inOxalis (x = 8), the alliance as defined here includes additional species for which cytological information is not yet available but which are supported as members on molecular and/or morphological grounds. The alliance includes members found in the Andean region from Venezuela to northern Argentina, with one species at high elevations in Central America. They occur from the high Andean steppes (páramo and puna) to the cloud forests of middle elevations and include both restricted endemics and variable widespread species complexes. Geographical and altitudinal distributions of members of the alliance and selectedOxalis species outside the alliance were compared with a combined phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequence data of ITS and ncpGS (chloroplast-expressed glutamine synthetase). Groups within the alliance (i.e., major clades on the molecular trees) occur across widespread, overlapping regions in the Andes, with only partial ecological separation. The hypothesis that theO. tuberosa alliance may have developed in the Andes of southern Peru and northwestern Bolivia and radiated southward and, especially, northward along the Andean axis is suggested by patterns of distributions of members of the alliance and outgroups. In spite of uncertain species delimitations, it is clear that the alliance includes many endemic species and ecotypes that have very restricted distributions. As relatives of the Andean tuber cropOxalis tuberosa, the genetic diversity represented by this geographical variability should be a high priority for conservation.  相似文献

The anther smut fungus Microbotryum violaceum ( = Ustilago violacea) is a parasite of many species of the Caryophyllaceae. Its host specificity has been debated since early this century, when cross‐inoculation experiments indicated the existence of host‐specific lineages. Recently, on the basis of spore ultrastructure, all presumed host races were lumped within M. violaceum. To measure gene flow among natural populations of anther smuts from different host species, we used microsatellite variation at 5 loci among samples from 8 Silene, 2 Saponaria, 2 Dianthus and 1 Gypsophila species. Most of the 326 M. violaceum samples investigated originated from the Swiss Alps and close surroundings. Microsatellite variation revealed almost perfect isolation among anther smut fungi from different host species. In addition, differentiation was supported by the nonrandom distribution of null alleles among samples from different host species and host genera. Null alleles were most abundant in anther smut samples from non‐Silene hosts. The resolution of genetic differentiation among anther smuts from different host species was highest in those from Silene species. Genetic relationships among samples as indicated by Neighbour‐Joining analysis based on genetic distances are discussed with respect to host phylogeny and host ecology. One sample was identified as Ustilago gausseni because it had verrucose instead of reticulate spores and was collected from Silene italica. Neighbour‐Joining analysis revealed that this sample was similar to the M. violaceum samples from other Silene host species. Therefore, our data question spore morphology as a reliable character for anther smut systematics.

Although some invasive plants are cosmopolitan, not all ecosystems are invaded to the same degree. Yet there is little experimental work on how ecosystem resistance to invasion at the establishment phase differs among ecosystems. We conducted two field sowing experiments in two consecutive years to examine establishment of the deciduous tree Ailanthus altissima, the succulent subshrub Carpobrotus spp. and the annual geophyte Oxalis pes‐caprae in coastal dunes, shrublands and oldfields in more than 200 sites across six Mediterranean Basin islands differing in climatic conditions and local species richness. Establishment success (i.e. percentage of plots with at least one seedling) and rates (i.e. seedling to sown seed ratio) were low, especially for Ailanthus even when accounting for differences in seed viability. Oxalis was capable of producing a new cohort of seedlings the year following planting. By contrast, all Ailanthus seedlings and half the Carpobrotus seedlings died following the first summer. Differences in establishment success and rates among ecosystems were species‐, island‐ and year‐dependent. Differences in precipitation and mean temperature were associated with differences in establishment rates across sites. Establishment rates tended to be positively correlated with cumulative precipitation and negatively with mean Ta. Unexpectedly, native species richness was not a good predictor of seedling establishment, except for higher Oxalis establishment success in species rich habitats. By conducting field sowing tests at multiple sites across a region we found that except for Oxalis, Mediterranean island ecosystems are quite resistant to invader establishment. These results suggest that differences in the degree of invasion between ecosystems and islands might be more dependent upon the influence of invasion event factors (e.g. propagule pressure) or factors acting at a later life‐history stages rather than differences in the resistance imposed by ecosystems to invader recruitment. Moreover, our results support the notion that in Mediterranean ecosystems invasions are highly idiosyncratic events and strongly dependent on water availability conditions.  相似文献

A new species, Sphacelotheca polygoni-persicariae, parasitizing the ovaries of Polygonum persicaria L. is described. This smut, collected several times in Madeira, Portugal, differs from other species of that genus, by its host plant and the reticulated teliospore ornamentation. On the basis of the morphological and ultrastructural characters of S. polygoni-persicariae, in connection with some recently published data on siderophore formation and 5S ribosomal RNA sequences it can be assumed that 1) members of the genus Sphacelotheca are separated from typical Ustilago species of Poaceae, 2) Sphacelotheca is restricted to species parasitizing Polygonaceae, and 3) species of Sphacelotheca and Microhotryum as well as those Ustilago species which parasitize in the flowers of Polygonaceae are closely related.  相似文献

A new smut fungus Ustilago aldabrensis on the grass Dactyloctenium ctenoides is described and illustrated from Aldabra Island in the Seychelles archipelago. It is compared with similar species known on the genus Dactyloctenium. A further two smut fungi infecting this host plant genus, U. dactyloctenii-gigantei and U. idonea are discussed. U. dactyloctenii-gigantei is reported for the first time from Nigeria on a new host plant, D. aegyptium. U. idonea is redescribed, and its nomenclature and geographical distribution are clarified. A key to smut fungi infecting species of Dactyloctenium is provided.  相似文献

The higher vulnerability of islands to invasions compared to mainland areas has been partially attributed to a simplification of island communities, with lower levels of natural enemies and competitors on islands conferring vacant niches for invaders to establish and proliferate. However, differences in invader life-history traits between populations have received less attention. We conducted a broad geographical analysis (i.e. 1050 km wide transect) of plant traits comparing insular and mainland populations to test the hypothesis that alien plants from insular populations have the potential for higher invasiveness than their alien mainland counterparts. For this purpose plants of the annual geophyte Oxalis pes-caprae were grown from bulbs collected in the Balearic islands and the Spanish mainland under common greenhouse conditions. There were no significant differences in bulb emergence and plant survival between descendants from insular and mainland populations. However, Oxalis descendants from insular populations produced 20% more bulbs without reducing allocation to bulb size, above-ground biomass or flowering than descendants from mainland populations. Based on the lack of sexual reproduction in Oxalis and the dependence of invasion on bulb production, our study suggests that the higher occurrence of Oxalis in the Balearic islands than in the Spanish mainland can partially be explained by genetically based higher propagation potential of insular populations compared to mainland populations.  相似文献

The auxins, I-naphthylacetic acid (NAA) and 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyaceticacid (2, 4-D) are shown to stimulate to varying extents thegrowth of chloro-phyllous tissues of several plant species cultivatedin vitro. Concentrations of 0.1 mg/1 of 2, 4-D or 1.0 mg/1 ofNAA are optimal for Haplopappus gracilis, and concentrationsof 1.0 mg/1 of 2, 4-D or 10.0 mg/1 of NAA are optimal for Hypochaerisradicata, Oxalis dispar, and Acer pseudoplatanus. NAA or 2,4-D in concentrations optimal for growth do not affect pigmentproduction in Hypochaeris, but inhibit in Acer and Oxalis. Inhibitionof chlorophyll formation by 2, 4-D is partial in Acer and completein Oxalis, whereas inhibition by NAA is partial in both species.Inhibition of carotenoid pigments by NAA or 2, 4-D is partialin both these species. NAA stimulates pigment production inHaplopappus and 2, 4-D inhibits; the inhibition of carotenoidsis again partial, whereas the inhibition of chlorophyll is complete. The data are discussed in relation to the development of chloroplastsin tissue cultures.  相似文献

Since the success of an invasive species depends not only upon its intrinsic traits but also on particular characteristics of the recipient habitat, assessing the performance of an invader across habitats provides a more realistic analysis of risk. Such an analysis will not only provide insights into the traits related to invasiveness, but also the habitat characteristics that underpin vulnerability to invasion that, taken together, will facilitate the selection of management strategies to mitigate the invader’s effect. In the present study, we considered the Mediterranean basin islands as an excellent study region to test how the same invasive species perform in different habitats within a single island, and to scale up differences among islands with similar climate. We tested how the performance of three widespread plant invaders with clonal growth but contrasting life-history traits, a deciduous tree Ailanthus altissima, a succulent subshrub Carpobrotus spp., and an annual geophyte Oxalis pes-caprae, varied depending upon the species identity, habitat, and invaded island. The environmental parameters considered were habitat type, elevation, species diversity in the invaded plot, and several soil traits (% C, % N, C/N, pH, and relative humidity). The study documents that the performance of these three important and widespread plant invaders is dependent mainly on species identity, and less upon the invaded island’s general features. Likewise, differences in performance among habitats were only significant in the case of Ailanthus, whereas Carpobrotus and Oxalis appear to perform equally well in different environments. Ailanthus thus appears to have a broader spectrum of invasiveness, being able to invade a larger number of habitat types. On the contrary, Carpobrotus spp. have not yet invaded habitats different from those where the species have been originally introduced and where they are still commonly spread by humans. Oxalis distribution is mainly related to agricultural activities and disturbed sites, and the total area infested by this geophyte may be more reflection of the extent of suitable habitats than of invasiveness or ecological impact. Our results confirm the potential for these species to significantly alter the functioning of ecosystems in the Mediterranean islands and highlight the risk to other islands not yet invaded.  相似文献

Degenerate primers corresponding to consensus sequences in the catalytic domains of known fungal adenylate cyclases were used to isolate gene-specific homologs from the Dutch elm disease pathogen Ophiostoma novo-ulmi, the dimorphic human pathogen Candida albicans, and the commercial mushroom Agaricus bisporus. All three fungi gave the expected PCR product of about 390 bp. Computer searches of the databases revealed that the products generated from O. novo-ulmi and C. albicans were highly similar to the adenylate cyclase gene of Magnaporthe grisea, the rice blast fungus (91% and 79%, respectively). The PCR product from the homobasidiomycete A. bisporus, on the other hand, showed 78% similarity to the uac1 gene of the heterobasidiomycete smut fungus, Ustilago maydis. Southern hybridization indicated that all three fungi contain a single adenylate cyclase gene. Our data suggest that PCR will be highly successful for the isolation of adenylate cyclase sequences from other fungi. Received: 13 April 1998 / Accepted: 27 May 1998  相似文献

During the phase of exponential growth in chlorophyllous calluscultures derived from Haplopappus gracilis, Hypochaeris radicata, and Acer pseudoplatamus, cells double their number on the average, and also their volume, in about 4.3, 6.6, and 9–2 daysrespectively. The two rates decline subsequently but cell expansioncontinues for a short time after division has ceased. With culturesof Oxalis dispar, however, which have an average cell generationtime of about 10 days, there is first a short exponential phasedominated by division, and this is followed by a series of phasesdominated alternately by either division or expansion. Chlorophyll accumulation does not occur in Haplopappus duringthe exponential phase (chlorophyll a decreases) but there isa slow accumulation of caro-tenoids. The bulk of the pigmentsaccumulate during the declining phase of growth mainly afterdivision has ceased. With Hypochaeris and Acer, on the otherhand, accumulation is most intense during the exponential phase, and few pigments are added later. With Oxalis, most of the accumulationoccurs after the exponential phase; carotenoids accumulate untilthe cessation of growth whereas chlorophylls start to declinebefore this. With all species, pigments decline after the cessationof growth. The loss is small in Haplopappus and the tissuesare still bright green when the medium dries out: Hypochaerisand Oxalis, in contrast, eventually become colourless. The data are discussed in relation to the changes in pigmentcontent that accompany the growth and development of a singlecell in each species.  相似文献

The co-occurrence of plant species within a community is influenced by local deterministic or neutral processes as well as historical regional processes. Floral trait distributions of co-flowering species that share pollinators may reflect the impact of pollinator preference and constancy on their assembly within local communities. While pollinator sharing may lead to increased visitation rates for species with similar flowers, the receipt of foreign pollen via interspecific pollinator movements can decrease seed set. We investigated the pattern of community flower colour assembly as perceived by native honeybee pollinators within 24 local assemblages of co-flowering Oxalis species within the Greater Cape Floristic Region, South Africa. To explore the influence of pollinators on trait assembly, we assessed the impact of colour similarity on pollinator choices and the cost of heterospecific pollen receipt. We show that flower colour is significantly clustered within Oxalis communities and that this is not due to historical constraint, as flower colour is evolutionarily labile within Oxalis and communities are randomly structured with respect to phylogeny. Pollinator observations reveal that the likelihood of pollinators switching between co-flowering species is low and increases with flower colour similarity. Interspecific hand pollination significantly reduced seed set in the four Oxalis species we investigated, and all were dependant on pollinators for reproduction. Together these results imply that flower colour similarity carries a potential fitness cost. However, pollinators were highly flower constant, and remained so despite the extreme similarity of flower colour as perceived by honeybees. This suggests that other floral traits facilitate discrimination between similarly coloured species, thereby likely resulting in a low incidence of interspecific pollen transfer (IPT). If colour similarity promotes pollinator attraction at the community level, the observed clustering of flower colour within communities might result from indirect facilitative interactions.  相似文献

Sporisorium warambiense is described and illustrated from the ovaries of Xerochloa laniflora from the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The smut fungus is characterized by sori restricted to the ovaries, presence of three simple, stout, narrowing columellae, dark reddish-brown spore balls, dimorphic spores (darker outer spores and lighter inner spores), and the absence of sterile cells. The differences between Sporisorium warambiense and three other smuts that infect Xerochloa (Sporisorium xerofasciculatum, Tilletia xerochloae, and Ustilago xerochloae), as well as comparable Sporisorium species on other grass genera from the tribe Paniceae are discussed. All Xerochloa smuts are endemic to Australia.  相似文献

The Pacific Coast species Oxalis suksdorfii (section Corniculatae) is morphologically tristylous. Flowers of the 3 kinds of plants present in natural populations differ in style length, stamen length, pollen size, stigma size and orientation, and stylar pubescence. Experimental studies and field observations indicate that plants with long-styled flowers are weakly self-compatible and show little differentiation in size or compatibility relationships of pollen from the 2 sets of stamens. Plants with mid-styled flowers have strongly differentiated pollen, but produce few capsules or seed after any artificial or natural pollinations. Plants with short-styled flowers are self-incompatible and show slight pollen differentiation. The data presented suggest that O. suksdorfii approaches functional dimorphism since the mid-styled form contributes little pollen and few seeds in sexual reproduction. The species may be in the process of losing the mid-styled form completely and provides a model of certain physiological and morphological changes which may have accompanied elimination of the mid-styled form in other Oxalis species. The abundance of plants with mid-styled flowers in natural populations suggests, however, that this form may be retained because it contributes to general population fitness, or because the genetic control of heterostyly in this species prevents its elimination.  相似文献

Two strains of a basidiomycetous yeast were derived from an insect trypanosomatid culture isolated from the intestine of a plant bug, Collaria oleosa (Heteroptera: Miridae), collected in Costa Rica. The yeast did not form ballistoconidia but reproduced only by budding. Teliospores were not observed in individual and crossed cultures of each strain. Morphological and other taxonomic characteristics of the yeast were similar to those of the species in the polyphyletic genus Rhodotorula. However, molecular phylogeny inferred from the internal transcribed spacers and D1/D2 region of the large subunit rRNA gene showed that the strains represent a new species placed among the smut fungi in the family Ustilentylomataceae, which includes Aurantiosporium subnitens, Fulvisporium restifaciens, Ustilentyloma fluitans, and Rhodotorula hordea. Given the well distinguished phylogenetic position of this novel species within the Ustilentylomataceae, we propose Microbotryozyma collariae gen. nov., sp. nov. to accommodate the yeast isolated from C. oleosa, with strain American Type Culture Collection MYA-4666T (= PRA303-1S = CBS 12537) designated as the type strain.  相似文献

Material of the genus Lepraria from maritime and continental Antarctica collected in 1986–2007 was studied. Four species were distinguished, L. alpina, L. caerulescens, L. straminea and one putative new taxon provisionally called Lepraria sp. AO. L. caerulescens is tentatively resurrected from the synonyms of L. alpina for the chemotype with atranorin and angardianic/roccellic acid. Lepraria sp. AO is characterized by its granular thallus similar to other members of the L. neglecta group and the presence of two fatty acids, so far unidentified and not known from other members of the genus. Morphological and chemical diagnostic characters of all taxa, their distribution and ecological features are discussed. An updated key for identification of all Antarctic species is provided.  相似文献
