The purpose of this report is to re-examine jaguar (Panthera onca) subspecies using morphometric skull characters and multivariate statistical methods to analyze differences. Eleven skull characters used historically to define jaguar subspecies were measured on 170 specimens in U.S. natural history museums. Relationships among the eight recognized subspecies of jaguar were examined. using Multigroup Discriminant Analysis (MDA) and univarite statistics. Discriminant analyses of these skull characteristics does not indicate distinct groups, supporting the null hypothesis. This analysis was conducted to add to systematic studies such as DNA analysis to assist the Felid Taxon Advisory Group (Felid TAG) and the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) establish valid taxonomic differences in the jaguar. African Penguins Spheniscus demersus are sexually dimorphic; on average, males are larger than females but measurements overlap making sex determination difficult through observations alone. We developed a discriminant function, using bill length and depth from a sample of birds sexed from gonad visualisation during post-mortem, which correctly classified 93% of the individuals. Cross-validation correctly assigned 90% of DNA-sexed birds and 91% of birds sexed by partner measurement comparisons. The use of discriminant function score cutpoints, while leaving 16% and 29% of birds unclassified, improved accuracy of birds sexed by DNA to 97% and of those sexed by partner comparison to 99%. Bill depth was found to be a discriminating variable. However, two techniques for measuring bill depth are currently in use for African Penguins. While these measurements are correlated (r = 0.85), they differ on average by 1.4?mm hindering accuracy of sex determination when using a discriminant function developed from the other bill depth measurement. Exploration of adult bill morphology of birds sexed from DNA at different colonies suggests the discriminant functions can be applied throughout the African Penguins’ South African range. 相似文献

In this paper we consider a two-group discriminant analysis problem where each group is a mixture of two subgroups. Based upon data from a clinical study of alcohol involvement and diseases, simulation experiments were performed for three different configurations of means and covariance matrices. Expected actual non-error rates are estimated for the linear, quadratic, and kernel discriminant functions for sample sizes 30, 50, 75, 100, 150 and 200. A conclusion of the article is that the kernel discriminant function performs as well as or better than quadratic discriminant function. However, the linear discriminant function was clearly inferior to either the quadratic or kernel discriminant functions. 相似文献

The introduction of the closely related weedy taxa of Amaranthus L. section Amaranthus into Europe has resulted in a number of taxonomic problems, especially regarding the rank of A. bouchonii Thell. Electrophoretic separation of five isozymes (phosphoglucoisomerase, phosphoglucomutase, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, malate dehydrogenase and menadione reductase) and morphological studies were used to generate new data on this problem, and canonical discriminant analysis of morphometric characters was carried out. The results obtained support the maintenance of A. bouchonii as a distinct taxon, most closely related to A. powellii S. Wats. The origin of this taxon is considered, and the monomorphism of the isozymes studied is discussed in the light of the extensive morphological variation within species in section Amaranthus. 相似文献

Hybrids of Lucilia sericata and Lucilia cuprina have been shown to exist in previous studies using molecular methods, but no study has shown explicitly that these hybrids can be identified morphologically. Published morphological characters used to identify L. sericata and L. cuprina were reviewed, and then scored and tested using specimens of both species and known hybrids. Ordination by multi-dimensional scaling indicated that the species were separable, and that hybrids resembled L. cuprina, whatever their origin. Discriminant function analysis of the characters successfully separated the specimens into three unambiguous groups – L. sericata, L. cuprina and hybrids. The hybrids were morphologically similar irrespective of whether they were from an ancient introgressed lineage or more modern. This is the first evidence that hybrids of these two species can be identified from their morphology. The usefulness of the morphological characters is also discussed and photographs of several characters are included to facilitate their assessment. 相似文献

Aquaticus and Barbareifolius are two subgroups of Senecio aquaticus s. l. (Asteraceae) that have been recognized at various taxonomic levels in European taxonomic literature. In this paper we present the results of morphological studies on S. aquaticus s. l. in order to establish the taxonomic status of these two subgroups. Using multivariate morphometric techniques (discriminant analysis and principal component analysis), we examined the diagnostic potential of 60 macro-morphological characters and studied the delimitation of Aquaticus and Barbareifolius. Seven of the characters studied were included in the discriminant function of the stepwise discriminant analysis and are therefore considered to be the most reliable diagnostic characters of Aquaticus and Barbareifolius. Barbareifolius has, amongst other distinguishing traits, a more divaricate inflorescence than Aquaticus. Because both subgroups are distinct but overlapping clusters in multivariate morphometric space, and because clear differences in their geographical distribution are absent, we recommend the taxonomic status of variety to both groups. Following the rules of nomenclature, Aquaticus and Barbareifolius should therefore be named S. aquaticus Hill var. aquaticus and S. aquaticus Hill var. barbareifolius (Krock.) 运用单因素方差分析、主成分分析、判别分析和聚类分析,对高原鼢鼠(Eospalax baileyi)4个地区(临潭、天祝、玛曲和碌曲)8个地理群体的头骨形态特征进行综合分析,比较13个特征变量的地理分异,挖掘形态特征的主要变量,并探讨其形态变异与环境的关系。结果发现,群体间13个特征变量均存在显著差异,主成分分析表明13个头骨特征变量可用3个主成分来表述,其累计贡献率达96.981%。颅全长、上齿列长及齿隙长是高原鼢鼠头骨发生分化的主要变量。天祝种群与碌曲种群,及玛曲种群与临潭种群都有重叠,其中碌曲的两个种群相似性最高,玛曲种群和临潭种群与其他种群几乎无重叠,显示完全分化,聚类分析结果与判别分析结果一致。头骨形态与地理因子的相关性分析发现头骨形态大小与海拔成显著的正相关关系。综合分析认为地理隔离、栖息地海拔因子影响下的生态条件等是高原鼢鼠头骨分化的主要因素。 相似文献

Silene latifolia (white campion) is widespread in W Eurasia and shows clinal variation in seed morphology. Two extensive parapatric races, within which seed morphology changes gradually with geographic distance, are separated by a transition zone where the morphological gradient is steeper. A sample of seeds from across the species' native range was scored for morphological characters and analysed using detrended correspondence analysis ordination and multiple regression, in order to simplify mapping of the variation pattern and to investigate statistical relationships with climatic variables. The transition zone, as defined by ordination scores, follows the convolutions of the 0C isotherm for January mean temperature along its entire length from N Europe to the Middle East. January temperature proved to be a highly significant predictor of seed morphology even after the removal of simple spatial trends. Although the origins of comparable large-scale clines have often been interpreted in historical terms, the result reported here supports a role for climatic selection in maintaining the existing variation pattern. 相似文献

Using a sample of published archaeological data, we expand on an earlier bivariate carbon model for diet reconstruction by adding bone collagen nitrogen stable isotope values (δ(15) N), which provide information on trophic level and consumption of terrestrial vs. marine protein. The bivariate carbon model (δ(13) C(apatite) vs. δ(13) C(collagen) ) provides detailed information on the isotopic signatures of whole diet and dietary protein, but is limited in its ability to distinguish between C(4) and marine protein. Here, using cluster analysis and discriminant function analysis, we generate a multivariate diet reconstruction model that incorporates δ(13) C(apatite) , δ(13) C(collagen) , and δ(15) N holistically. Inclusion of the δ(15) N data proves useful in resolving protein-related limitations of the bivariate carbon model, and splits the sample into five distinct dietary clusters. Two significant discriminant functions account for 98.8% of the sample variance, providing a multivariate model for diet reconstruction. Both carbon variables dominate the first function, while δ(15) N most strongly influences the second. Independent support for the functions' ability to accurately classify individuals according to diet comes from a small sample of experimental rats, which cluster as expected from their diets. The new model also provides a statistical basis for distinguishing between food sources with similar isotopic signatures, as in a previously analyzed archaeological population from Saipan (see Ambrose et al.: AJPA 104(1997) 343-361). Our model suggests that the Saipan islanders' (13) C-enriched signal derives mainly from sugarcane, not seaweed. Further development and application of this model can similarly improve dietary reconstructions in archaeological, paleontological, and primatological contexts. 相似文献

The advantages and disadvantages of various numerical and graphical techniques for the analysis of inter- and intraspecific feeding relationships of fishes were examined. All methods have been cited in the literature since 1988. The index of preponderance, the resultant index and graphical methods proposed by Costello and Tokeshi were used to illustrate the relative importance of prey species to an individual fish species with no differentiation between size classes. Inter- and intraspecific competition and niche overlap were determined from multivariate analysis [the ordination technique, detrended correspondence analysis, cluster analysis by the Bray-Curtis equation, per cent overlap and two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN)]. The identity of the prey organisms are not lost in the comparisons, and the value of this is determined through comparison with techniques such as Shannon-Wiener which obscure these data. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index was combined with an analysis of 'evenness' to refine the technique further to assess niche breadth, as was the Levins index. The study shows that to give an estimate of competition within the community, it is important to assess the data with respect to seasonal and temporal patterns using multivariate analysis. 相似文献

Discrete characters of the occlusal surface (additional cusps) have been studied to elaborate a new approach to the identification of the Ground Squirrel species Spermophilus odessanus, S. suslicus, S. pygmaeus, S. citellus, and S. xanthoprymnus. Data on the presence/absence of the additional cusps have been represented as star plots and, in addition, have been studied using discriminant function analysis. The species‐specific sets of the characters (patterns of bunodonty) have been revealed and are of high diagnostic value. The Citellus‐set is defined by the presence of mesostyles and the rareness of the metastylids, paraconules and metaconules, hypostyles and protostyles. The Pygmaeus‐set is characterized by the presence of additional cusps in the lower cheek teeth. The Odessanus‐oriented set is found in the Spermophilus pygmaeus, S. odessanus, and S. suslicus. The relatively high frequency of additional cusps of the metaloph and the paraloph is characteristic for this set. The Plesiomorphic‐set (characters shared by all the studied species and for this reason regarded herein as ancestral) is found in S. xanthoprymnus. The patterns of bunodonty serve as diagnostic criteria only as a whole: the shape of a star plot (relations among the character frequencies), rather than certain character values, is indicative. An optimal level of identification of species is possible based on the combination of the discrete characters mentioned and on the size parameters of the third upper molar. The occlusal sets are intended to remain stable during the time of species existence and seem to correspond to trends in specialization. The functional meaning of the sets can be explained by the dependence between the presence/absence of the discrete characters and the shape of the crown and its main lophs. Functional dental theory predicts that tooth shape responds evolutionarily to the mechanical properties of food. Most studies of mammalian teeth have focused on qualitative measures of dental anatomy and have not formally tested how the functional components of teeth adapt in response to diet. Here we generated a series of predictions for tooth morphology based on biomechanical models of food processing. We used murine rodents (Old World rats and mice) to test these predictions for the relationship between diet and morphology and to identify a suite of functional dental characteristics that best predict diets. One hundred and five dental characteristics were extracted from images of the upper and lower tooth rows and incisors for 98 species. After accounting for phylogenetic relationships, we showed that species evolving plant‐dominated diets evolved deeper incisors, longer third molars, longer molar crests, blunter posteriorly angled cusps, and more expanded laterally oriented occlusal cusps than species adapting to animal‐dominated diets. Measures of incisor depth, crest length, cusp angle and sharpness, occlusal cusp orientation, and the lengths of third molars proved the best predictors of dietary adaptation. Accounting for evolutionary history in a phylogenetic discriminant function analysis notably improved the classification accuracy. Molar morphology is strongly correlated with diet and we suggest that these dental traits can be used to infer diet with good accuracy for both extinct and extant murine species. 相似文献

鳞头犬牙南极鱼为南极最为重要的底层鱼类,具有重要的生态作用和极高的商业价值,鱼类耳石形态随着生活史过程的推移有所差异,故耳石形态分析可用于推断鳞头犬牙南极鱼的生活史过程。本研究利用采集自南极罗斯海、阿蒙森海、威德尔海及拉扎列夫海120尾分属4个生活史阶段的鳞头犬牙南极鱼耳石,结合传统测量分析与椭圆傅里叶分析两种形态学研究方法,对其各生活史阶段耳石形态的差异进行研究。结果表明: 鳞头犬牙南极鱼各生活史阶段耳石形态存在差异,随着生活史过程的推移,耳石的变化趋势为整体上由轮廓平滑、复杂度较低向轮廓曲折、高度复杂化转变,且纵轴方向增长速度低于横轴方向,翼叶等特征部位变化显著。针对耳石形态的线性判别分析结果显示,椭圆傅里叶分析判别值较高,为85.4%,而传统测量分析判别值较低,为71.9%,表明相较于传统测量分析,椭圆傅里叶分析更具优势。 相似文献

We examined morphological variation among populations of the stream-dwelling waterstrider, Aquarius remigis. A previous analysis of allozyme variation along a transect from southern Quebec to southern North Carolina revealed two distinct 'types' of A. remigis, north and south of a transition zone in southern New York and northern Pennsylvania. To assess the concordance of morphological and allozyme differentiation, adults were sampled from 15 populations along the original transect, as well as 11 additional populations in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. Eight measurements of leg and body size were taken of preserved individuals. Univariate and multivariate analyses (multiple regression, PCA, discriminant analysis) reveal significant differentiation between northern and southern populations with a transition zone between latitudes 39o and 42o north. Strong clines within each region and a clear transition between regions support previous suggestions that there are two distinct 'types' of this species in eastern North America. The transition zone, in morphology coincides with that revealed by the allozyme variation, but extends further south. The covariance of allozyme frequency and morphometric traits suggests that differentiation has occurred through vicariance and secondary contact, and that in this system, cladistic and adaptive differentiation are coupled. 相似文献
