Peripheral fatigue and muscle cooling induce similar effects on sarcolemmal propagation properties. The aim of the study was to assess the combined effects of muscle temperature (Tm) manipulation and fatigue on skeletal muscle electrical and mechanical characteristics during isometric contraction. After maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) assessment, 16 participants performed brief and sustained isometric tasks of different intensities in low (Tm(L)), high (Tm(H)) and neutral (Tm(N)) temperature conditions, before and after a fatiguing exercise (6s on/4s off at 50% MVC, to the point of fatigue). During contraction, the surface electromyogram (EMG) and force were recorded from the biceps brachii muscle. The root mean square (RMS) and conduction velocity (CV) were calculated off-line. After the fatiguing exercise: (i) MVC decreased similarly in all Tm conditions (P<0.05), while EMG RMS did not change; and (ii) CV decreased to a further extent in Tm(L) compared to Tm(N) and Tm(H) in all brief and sustained contractions (P<0.05). The larger CV drop in Tm(L) after fatigue suggests that Tm(L) and fatigue have a combined and additional effect on sarcolemmal propagation properties. Despite these changes, force generating capacity was not affected by Tm manipulation. A compensatory mechanism has been proposed to explain this phenomenon.  相似文献

Nonlinear dynamical techniques offer a powerful approach for the investigation of physiological time series. Multiscale entropy analyses have shown that pathological and aging systems are less complex than healthy systems and this finding has been attributed to degraded physiological control processes. A similar phenomenon may arise during fatiguing muscle contractions where surface electromyography signals undergo temporal and spectral changes that arise from the impaired regulation of muscle force production. Here we examine the affect of fatigue and contraction intensity on the short and long-term complexity of biceps brachii surface electromyography. To investigate, we used an isometric muscle fatigue protocol (parsed into three windows) and three contraction intensities (% of maximal elbow joint moment: 40%, 70% and 100%). We found that fatigue reduced the short-term complexity of biceps brachii activity during the last third of the fatiguing contraction. We also found that the complexity of surface electromyography is dependent on contraction intensity. Our results show that multiscale entropy is sensitive to muscle fatigue and contraction intensity and we argue it is imperative that both factors be considered when evaluating the complexity of surface electromyography signals. Our data contribute to a converging body of evidence showing that multiscale entropy can quantify subtle information content in physiological time series.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether children with cerebral palsy (CP), like typically developing peers, would compensate for muscle fatigue by recruiting additional motor units during a sustained low force contraction until task failure.Twelve children with CP and 17 typically developing peers performed one submaximal isometric elbow flexion contraction until the task could no longer be sustained at on average 25% (range 10–35%) of their maximal voluntary torque. Meanwhile surface electromyography (EMG) was measured from the biceps brachii and triceps brachii, and acceleration variations of the forearm were detected by an accelerometer. Slopes of the change in EMG amplitude and median frequency and accelerometer variation during time normalised to their initial values were calculated.Strength and time to task failure were similar in both groups. Children with CP exhibited a lower increase in EMG amplitude of the biceps brachii and triceps brachii during the course of the sustained elbow flexion task, while there were no significant group differences in median frequency decrease or acceleration variation increase. This indicates that children with CP do not compensate muscle fatigue with recruitment of additional motor units during sustained low force contractions.  相似文献

PurposeThis study investigated neuromuscular fatigue following high versus low-intensity eccentric exercise corresponding to the same amount of work.MethodsTen volunteers performed two eccentric exercises of the elbow flexors: a high-intensity versus a low-intensity exercise. Maximal voluntary contraction torque and surface electromyography of the biceps brachii muscle were recorded before, immediately and 48 h after exercises. Maximal voluntary activation level, neural (M-wave) and contractile (muscular twitch) properties of the biceps brachii muscle were analysed using electrical stimulation techniques.ResultsMaximal voluntary contraction torque was significantly (P < 0.01) reduced immediately and 48 h after exercise but the reduction was not different between the two conditions. Electromyography associated with maximal voluntary contraction significantly decreased (P < 0.05) immediately and 48 h after exercise for both conditions while maximal voluntary activation level was only significantly reduced immediately after the high-intensity exercise. Peak twitch alterations were observed immediately and 48 h after exercise for both conditions while M-wave did not change.ConclusionHigh and low-intensity eccentric exercises with the same amount of work induced the same reduction in maximal strength capacities of the biceps brachii muscles. The magnitude of peripheral and central fatigue was very similar in both conditions.  相似文献

Strength training generates alterations in muscle geometry, which can be monitored by imaging techniques as, for example, the ultrasound (US) technique. There is no consensus about the homogeneity of hypertrophy in different muscle sites. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the muscle thickness (MT) and pennation angle (PA) in 3 different sites (50, 60, and 70% of arm length) of the biceps brachii and triceps brachii after 12 weeks of strength training. Forty-nine healthy untrained men were divided into 2 groups: Training Group ([TG, n = 40] 29.90 ± 1.72 years; 79.53 ± 11.84 kg; 173 ± 0.6 cm) and Control Group (n = 9 25.89 ± 3.59 years; 73.96 ± 9.86 kg; 171 ± 6 cm). The TG underwent a strength training program during 12 weeks, which included exercises such as a free-weight bench press, machine lat pull-down, triceps extension in lat pull-down, and standing free-weight biceps curl with a straight bar. A US apparatus was used to measure the PA and MT at the 3 sites. The maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) test was conducted for each muscle group. After 12 weeks of training, a significant difference was observed between MT in biceps brachii, with an improvement of 12% in the proximal site, whereas the distal site increased by only 4.7% (p < 0.05). For the long head of the triceps brachii, the MT and PA at the 3 sites presented significant increases, but no significant variation was observed among them, probably because of the pennated-fiber arrangement. The MVC increased significantly for both muscle groups. The results indicated that the strength training program was efficient in promoting hypertrophy in both muscles, but with dissimilar responses of the pennated and fusiform muscle architecture at different arm sites.  相似文献

This study compared a conventional pull-up and chin-up with a rotational exercise using Perfect·Pullup? twisting handles. Twenty-one men (24.9 ± 2.4 years) and 4 women (23.5 ± 1 years) volunteered to participate. Electromyographic (EMG) signals were collected with DE-3.1 double-differential surface electrodes at a sampling frequency of 1,000 Hz. The EMG signals were normalized to peak activity in the maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) trial and expressed as a percentage. Motion analysis data of the elbow were obtained using Vicon Nexus software. One-factor repeated measures analysis of variance examined the muscle activation patterns and kinematic differences between the 3 pull-up exercises. Average EMG muscle activation values (%MVIC) were as follows: latissimus dorsi (117-130%), biceps brachii (78-96%), infraspinatus (71-79%), lower trapezius (45-56%), pectoralis major (44-57%), erector spinae (39-41%), and external oblique (31-35%). The pectoralis major and biceps brachii had significantly higher EMG activation during the chin-up than during the pull-up, whereas the lower trapezius was significantly more active during the pull-up. No differences were detected between the Perfect·Pullup? with twisting handles and the conventional pull-up and chin-up exercises. The mean absolute elbow joint range of motion was 93.4 ± 14.6°, 100.6 ± 14.5°, and 99.8 ± 11.7° for the pull-up, chin-up, and rotational exercise using the Perfect·Pullup? twisting handles, respectively. For each exercise condition, the timing of peak muscle activation was expressed as a percentage of the complete pull-up cycle. A general pattern of sequential activation occurred suggesting that pull-ups and chin-ups were initiated by the lower trapezius and pectoralis major and completed with biceps brachii and latissimus dorsi recruitment. The Perfect·Pullup? rotational device does not appear to enhance muscular recruitment when compared to the conventional pull-up or chin-up.  相似文献

This investigation was designed to determine if vibration during fatiguing resistance exercise would alter associated patterns of muscle activity. A cross-over design was employed with 8 subjects completing a resistance exercise bout once with a vibrating dumbbell (V) (44 Hz, 3 mm displacement) and once without vibration (NV). For both exercise bouts, 10 sets were performed with a load that induced concentric muscle failure during the 10th repetition. The appropriate load for each set was determined during a pretest. Each testing session was separated by 1 week. Electromyography (EMG) was obtained from the biceps brachii muscle at 12 different time points during a maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) at a 170 degrees elbow angle after each set of the dumbbell exercise. The time points were as follows: pre (5 minutes before the resistance exercise bout), T1-T10 (immediately following each set of resistance exercise), and post (15 minutes after the resistance exercise bout). EMG was analyzed for median power frequency (MPF) and maximum (mEMG). NV resulted in a significant decrease in MPF at T1-T4 (p < or 0.05) and a significant increase in mEMG at T2 during the MVC. V had an overall trend of lower mEMG in comparison to NV. The mEMG and MPF values associated with NV were similar to previously reported investigations. The lower mEMG values and the higher MPF of V in comparison to NV are undocumented. The EMG patterns observed with vibration may indicate a more efficient and effective recruitment of high threshold motor units during fatiguing contractions. This may indicate the usage of vibration with resistance exercise as an effective tool for strength training athletes.  相似文献

The focus of the present study is the long term element of muscle fatigue provoked by prolonged intermittent contractions at submaximal force levels and analysed by force, surface electromyography (EMG) and mechanomyogram (MMG). It was hypothesized that fatigue related changes in mechanical performance of the biceps muscle are more strongly reflected in low than in high force test contractions, more prominent in the MMG than in the EMG signal and less pronounced following contractions controlled by visual compared to proprioceptive feedback. Further, it was investigated if fatigue induced by 30 min intermittent contractions at 30% as well as 10% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) lasted more than 30 min recovery. In six male subjects the EMG and MMG were recorded from the biceps brachii muscle during three sessions with fatiguing exercise at 10% with visual feedback and at 30% MVC with visual and proprioceptive feedback. EMG, MMG, and force were evaluated during isometric test contractions at 5% and 80% MVC before prolonged contraction and after 10 and 30 min of recovery. MVC decreased significantly after the fatiguing exercise in all three sessions and was still decreased even after 30 min of recovery. In the time domain significant increases after the fatiguing exercise were found only in the 5% MVC tests and most pronounced for the MMG. No consistent changes were found for neither EMG nor MMG in the frequency domain and feedback mode did not modify the results. It is concluded that long term fatigue after intermittent contractions at low force levels can be detected even after 30 min of recovery in a low force test contraction. Since the response was most pronounced in the MMG this may be a valuable variable for detection of impairments in the excitation-contraction coupling.  相似文献

This study was designed to investigate the local effect of experimental muscle pain on the MMG and the surface EMG during a range of sub-maximal isometric contractions. Muscle pain was induced by injections of hypertonic saline into the biceps brachii muscle in 12 subjects. Injections of isotonic saline served as a control. Pain intensity and location, MMG and surface EMG from the biceps brachii were assessed during static isometric (0%, 10%, 30%, 50% and, 70% of the maximal voluntary contraction) and ramp isometric (0-50% of the maximal voluntary contraction) elbow flexions. MMG and surface EMG signals were analyzed in the time and frequency domain. Experimentally induced muscle pain induced an increase in root mean square values of the MMG signal while no changes were observed in the surface EMG. Most likely this increase reflects changes in the mechanical contractile properties of the muscle and indicates compensatory mechanisms, i.e. decreased firing rate and increased twitch force to maintain a constant force output in presence of experimental muscle pain. Under well-controlled conditions, MMG recordings may be more sensitive than surface EMG recordings and clinically useful for detecting non-invasively increased muscle mechanical contributions during muscle pain conditions.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the recovery of the maximum voluntary contraction force (MVC), the endurance time and electromyographical (EMG) parameters following exhaustive dynamic exercise of the m. biceps brachii. EMG recordings were made in ten healthy subjects using bipolar surface electrodes placed over the common belly of the left arm biceps muscle. Up to 25 h post-exercise, the maximum contraction force and the EMG signal were recorded alternately at regular intervals. The EMG signal was recorded during 30-s contractions at 40% of the pre-fatigued MVC. Four hours and 25 h post-exercise, the endurance time of a 40% pre-fatigued MVC was recorded. Up to 25 h after the exercise the maximum contraction force, the endurance time and the EMG parameters were significantly different from the pre-exercise values. Nine out of ten subjects complained that muscle soreness had developed. Thus, long-lasting changes are found after exhaustive dynamic exercise, not only in the MVC and the muscle's endurance capacity, but also in the EMG signal.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the time-of-day effects on muscle fatigue and recovery process following an isometric fatiguing contraction. Sixteen male subjects were tested at two times (06:00h and 18:00h) and were requested to perform a sustained submaximal contraction of the elbow flexors, consisting in maintaining 40% of their absolute strength as long as they could. Isometric maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) were performed before (Pre), immediately after (Post), and up to 10min after the endurance task. Endurance time, peak torque (PT) and electromyographic (EMG) activities of the biceps brachii and triceps brachii were recorded and analysed. Results showed that under Pre-test conditions, PT developed at 18:00h was higher than at 06:00h. No time-of-day effect appears for the endurance time and EMG activities during the test. No time-of-day effect was observed on either MVC or EMG recovery. From the results of this study, it seems that both muscle fatigue and recovery process are not time-of-day dependent. We conclude that circadian rhythm of the force do not influence the evaluation of muscle capacities during a submaximal exercise corresponding at 40% of MVC.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of elbow joint position on electromyographic (EMG) and mechanomyographic (MMG) activities of agonist and antagonist muscles in young and old women. Surface EMG and MMG were recorded from the triceps and biceps brachii, and brachioradialis muscles during isometric elbow extensions in young and old women. The measurements were carried out at an optimal joint angle (A(o)), as well as at smaller (A(s) = A(o) - 30 degrees ) and larger (A(l) = A(o) + 30 degrees ) angles. The normalized to force EMG amplitude (RMS-EMG/F) was smaller in old women compared to young in all muscles. The RMS-EMG/F of the triceps brachii muscle was not affected by muscle length while that of the biceps brachii and brachioradialis muscles increased at shortest muscle length in both groups. The normalized to force MMG amplitude (RMS-MMG/F) was smaller in old than in young in the triceps brachii muscle only. There was an increase in RMS-MMG/F with triceps brachii and biceps brachii muscle shortening in both groups, and in the brachioradialis muscle -- in young only. Compared to young, older women exhibited a bigger force fluctuation during maximum voluntary contraction, but these did not contribute significantly to the RMS-MMG. Skinfold thickness accounted for the RMS-EMG/F and RMS-MMG/F differences seen between old and young women in the biceps brachii muscle only. It is concluded that, the EMG and MMG response to muscles length change in agonist and antagonist muscles is generally similar in old and young women but the optimal angle shifts toward a bigger value in older women.  相似文献

This paper presents a novel method to quantify spatial changes in muscle activation pattern by multi-channel surface electromyography (MCSEMG) in order to investigate motor unit recruitment variation. The method is based on non-uniform distributions of motor units that cause spatial inhomogeneous muscle activation. To evaluate the method, 15 subjects performed three isometric elbow flexion contractions consisting of slow sinusoidal changes in force ranging from 0% to 80% of the maximal voluntary contraction. MCSEMG electrodes were placed in a 10 x 13 grid over the biceps brachii muscle. From all channels, root mean square (RMS) values of bipolar leadings were computed over 0.5 s epochs over the whole recording. Thereafter, correlation coefficients were calculated between the RMS values at one epoch, with the RMS values at another epoch. Results showed consistent spatial changes in the distribution of RMS at different contraction levels up to 80% of maximal voluntary contraction and when comparing increasing and decreasing contractions at the same force level. These findings are reproducible within and between subjects, and in agreement with physiological phenomena and therefore indicate that the spatial inhomogeneities of motor unit properties in the biceps brachii muscle can be used to study changes in motor unit recruitment.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of eccentric exercise on the ability to exert steady submaximal forces with muscles that cross the elbow joint. Eight subjects performed two tasks requiring isometric contraction of the right elbow flexors: a maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) and a constant-force task at four submaximal target forces (5, 20, 35, 50% MVC) while electromyography (EMG) was recorded from elbow flexor and extensor muscles. These tasks were performed before, after, and 24 h after a period of eccentric (fatigue and muscle damage) or concentric exercise (fatigue only). MVC force declined after eccentric exercise (45% decline) and remained depressed 24 h later (24%), whereas the reduced force after concentric exercise (22%) fully recovered the following day. EMG amplitude during the submaximal contractions increased in all elbow flexor muscles after eccentric exercise, with the greatest change in the biceps brachii at low forces (3-4 times larger at 5 and 20% MVC) and in the brachialis muscle at moderate forces (2 times larger at 35 and 50% MVC). Eccentric exercise resulted in a twofold increase in coactivation of the triceps brachii muscle during all submaximal contractions. Force fluctuations were larger after eccentric exercise, particularly at low forces (3-4 times larger at 5% MVC, 2 times larger at 50% MVC), with a twofold increase in physiological tremor at 8-12 Hz. These data indicate that eccentric exercise results in impaired motor control and altered neural drive to elbow flexor muscles, particularly at low forces, suggesting altered motor unit activation after eccentric exercise.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to investigate if the intramuscular pressure generated during an isometric muscle contraction is important for the appearance of EMG spectral changes accompanying localized muscular fatigue. The EMG and intramuscular pressure of the left biceps brachii in eight volunteers were recorded during standardized isometric contractions by means of intramuscular wire electrodes and infusion catheters, respectively. Spectral changes were elicited by a submaximal contraction and the intramuscular pressure at which the induced spectral changes were able to recover was determined. It was found that significant recovery was possible only if the intramuscular pressure dropped below a level of about 2.7 kPa (20 mm Hg). It is concluded that the intramuscular pressure during a sustained isometric contraction is relevant for the generation of fatigue induced spectral changes, and that measurement of the intramuscular pressure makes possible predetermination of whether or not an isometric muscle contraction is liable to result in localized muscular fatigue.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Exercise beliefs abound regarding variations in strength training techniques on muscle activation levels yet little research has validated these ideas. The purpose of the study is to determine muscle activation level, expressed as a percent of a normalization contraction, of the latissimus dorsi, biceps brachii and middle trapezius/rhomboids muscle groups during a series of different exercise tasks. METHODS: The average muscle activity during four tasks; wide grip pulldown, reverse grip pull down [RGP], seated row with retracted scapula, and seated rows with non-retracted scapulae was quantified during two 10 second isometric portions of the four exercises. A repeated measures ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey test was used to determine the influence of exercise type on muscle activity for each muscle. RESULTS & DISCUSSION: No exercise type influenced biceps brachii activity. The highest latissimus dorsi to biceps ratio of activation occurred during the wide grip pulldown and the seated row. Highest levels of myoelectric activity in the middle trapezius/rhomboid muscle group occurred during the seated row. Actively retracting the scapula did not influence middle trapezius/rhomboid activity. CONCLUSION: Variations in latissimus dorsi exercises are capable of producing small changes in the myoelectric activity of the primary movers.  相似文献

Electromyography (EMG) is commonly used to determine the electrical activity of skeletal muscle during contraction. To date, independent verification of the relationship between muscle use and EMG has not been provided. It has recently been shown that relaxation- (e.g., T2) weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI) of skeletal muscle demonstrate exercise-induced contrast enhancement that is graded with exercise intensity. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that exercise-induced magnetic resonance (MR) contrast shifts would relate to EMG amplitude if both measures reflect muscle use during exercise. Both MRI and EMG data were collected for separate eccentric (ECC) and concentric (CON) exercise of increasing intensity to take advantage of the fact that the rate of increase and amplitude of EMG activity are markedly greater for CON muscle actions. Seven subjects 30 +/- 2 (SE) yr old performed five sets of 10 CON or ECC arm curls with each of four resistances representing 40, 60, 80, and 100% of their 10 repetition maximum for CON curls. There was 1.5 min between sets and 30 min between bouts (5 sets of 10 actions at each relative resistance). Multiple echo, transaxial T2-weighted MR images (1.5 T, TR/TE 2,000/30) were collected from a 7-cm region in the middle of the arm before exercise and immediately after each bout. Surface EMG signals were collected from both heads of the biceps brachii and the long head of the triceps brachii muscles. CON and ECC actions resulted in increased integrated EMG (IEMG) and T2 values that were strongly related (r = 0.99, P < 0.05) with relative resistance.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Muscle fatigue is associated with reduced power output and work capacity of the skeletal muscle. Fatigue-induced impairments in muscle function are believed to be a potential cause of increased injury rates during the latter stages of athletic competition and often occur during unexpected perturbations. However the effect of fatigue on functionally relevant, full body destabilizing perturbations has not been investigated. This study examines the effect of muscle fatigue on the activation of the quadriceps and hamstrings to fast, full body perturbations evoked by a moveable platform. Surface electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded from the knee extensor (vastus medialis, rectus femoris, and vastus lateralis) and flexor muscles (biceps femoris and semitendinosus) of the right leg in nine healthy men during full body perturbations performed at baseline and immediately following high intensity exercise performed on a bicycle ergometer. In each condition, participants stood on a moveable platform during which 16 randomized postural perturbations (eight repetitions of two perturbation types: 8 cm forward slides, 8 cm backward slides) with varying inter-perturbation time intervals were performed over a period of 2-3 min. Maximal voluntary knee extension force was measured before and after the high intensity exercise protocol to confirm the presence of fatigue. Immediately after exercise, the maximal force decreased by 63% and 66% for knee extensors and flexors, respectively (P<0.0001). During the post-exercise postural perturbations, the EMG average rectified value (ARV) was significantly lower than the baseline condition for both the knee extensors (average across all muscles; baseline: 19.7±25.4μV, post exercise: 16.2±19.4 μV) and flexors (baseline: 24.3±20.9 μV, post exercise: 13.8±11.0 μV) (both P<0.05). Moreover the EMG onset was significantly delayed for both the knee extensors (baseline: 132.7±32.9 ms, post exercise: 170.8±22.9 ms) and flexors (baseline: 139.1±38.8 ms, post exercise: 179.3±50.9 ms) (both P<0.05). A significant correlation (R(2)=0.53; P<0.05) was identified between the percent reduction of knee extension MVC and the percent change in onset time of the knee extensors post exercise. This study shows that muscle fatigue induces a reduction and delay in the activation of both the quadriceps and hamstring muscles in response to rapid destabilizing perturbations potentially reducing the stability around the knee.  相似文献
