The river Woluwe in Brussels and Flanders (Belgium) is a small tributary of 15 km length that drains an area of 9400 ha in the Schelde river basin. The headwaters of the Woluwe are highly fragmented by diverse pond systems and are vaulted in the Brussels agglomeration. Hyporheic zones locally influence the water quality. The downstream stretch of the river receives sewage waters from households and industry. As the river Woluwe within a short distance represents a typical gradient from groundwater-fed sources in the forest towards severely polluted water, a comparative monitoring using diatoms, macroinvertebrates and macrophytes was done. The saprobic index based on diatoms, the Belgian Biotic Index (BBI) for macroinvertebrates and a macrophyte index based on the N-values of Ellenberg were used in this comparison and for estimating the correlation with the bimonthly measured chemical variables in 16 sampling stations. The diatom saprobic index and the macrophyte index were strongly correlated. Both groups showed strong correlations with phosphate, ammonium and chemical oxygen demand. The Belgian Biotic Index showed lower correlations with the nutrient variables, but was slightly better correlated to chemical oxygen demand, chloride and dissolved oxygen. None of the indices showed a correlation with nitrate. Local substrate or light conditions could interfere with the indicator system, especially for the macrophytes and occasionally for the macroinvertebrates. It was concluded that at least in this particular river system, the indices based on the primary producers were more indicative for the trophic status, whereas the BBI showed a broader relationship to the general degree of pollution. Therefore, these three indices are considered as complementary for monitoring the biological quality and the ecological status of a river system.  相似文献

Large rivers are amongst the most degraded ecosystems. We studied a relationship between hydromorphological degradation and benthic invertebrates in large rivers in Slovenia. Five indices of the Slovenian hydromorphological assessment methodology were used to develop a HM stressor gradient. Natural type-specific habitat diversity was considered in the hydromorphological stressor gradient building and thus two hydromorphological types of large rivers were defined. CCA ordination with five HM indices and 315 benthic invertebrate taxa revealed variations in taxa response along the HM stressor gradient. First CCA axis species values were used to develop a taxon-specific river fauna value (Rfi), whereas tolerance values (biplot scaling) were used to determine a hydromorphological indicative weight (HWi). Rfi, HWi, and log5 abundance classes were combined using weighted average approach to construct a River fauna index for large rivers (RFIVR). Several additional benthic invertebrate-based metrics were also tested against the HQM. A Slovenian multimetric index for assessing the hydromorphological impact on benthic invertebrates in large rivers (SMEIHVR) was constructed from the RFIVR and a functional metric %akal + lithal + psammal taxa (scored taxa = 100%). The strong relationship between hydromorphological stressor gradient and SMEIHVR index provides us with an effective assessment system and river management tool.  相似文献

This study aimed at comparing the results obtained by processing a series of data according to several diversity indices (Simpson, Berger-Parker, Margalef, Menhinick, McIntosh, Shannon) and one similarity index (Jaccard) with those obtained from two biotic indices (Trent River Biotic Index, Extended Biotic Index). In addition, Cody's index was adopted to measure the species turnover along the stream gradient. The source of the data was a study of the seasonal variations of macroinvertebrates from the Ravella stream (Como Province, Northern Italy). The conclusions are the following. There is clearly a certain connection between the organic debris in the habitat, the abundance of individuals and the decrease in the diversity value of the macroinvertebrate association. The species turnover along the stream gradient is rapid which is due, in addition to birth and death rates, to the fact that most of the insects emerge as terrestrial adults. The species abundance distribution is a very simple and powerful tool for describing and comparing the species diversity from different sampling stations. Any type of monitoring (e.g., biotic indices, diversity indices) is useful in comparing non-polluted and heavily polluted environments. Conversely, small differences between species associations are better highlighted if diversity indices with high discriminant ability (e.g., Simpson's index) or species abundance distribution are used rather than biotic indices.  相似文献

In accordance with the aims of the E.U. funded AQEM Project, an assessment system module based on aquatic macroinvertebrates was developed for small sized rivers in the southern Apennines (south Italy). Eleven stream sites, impacted to a greater or a lesser extent by organic pollution and/or habitat impairment and chosen to cover the whole degradation gradient present in the geographical area were sampled in three seasons. The samples were collected following a proportional, multihabitat procedure, afterwards considering separately the replicates collected in the depositional (pool) and transport (riffle) areas for the analysis. A PCA multivariate analysis was performed to extract the main axes of variation of the biological community, which resulted in the first axis being strongly correlated to ecological quality. The final assessment module is based on a multimetric system, structured by selecting the best metrics in simulating the first axis gradient. The system considers a total of 15 different metrics, mainly providing information concerning tolerance to pollution, taxa richness, habitat features and trophic structure of the community. In accordance with the WFD requirements, some of these metrics are based on abundance classes of taxa. Depositional and transport units, due to the observed dissimilarity in the structure of their benthic communities, were kept separate during the development of the assessment system to retain this potentially useful information and to clear interpretation of the results. Both `riffle' and `pool' invertebrate data showed clear differences in ecological quality between sites. Nevertheless, the final assessment module is based on the macroinvertebrates inhabiting depositional areas of rivers only, because the metrics for these river units showed a better performance than those examined for the transport river units. The application of the assessment module requires 10 replicates to be quantitatively collected, for a total area of 0.5 m2. In terms of sampling and identification effort, the assessment module shows a good comparability with the standard Italian method presently in use and might thus be easily applied for river sites classification according to the Water Framework Directive in southern Italy. The site classification obtained with the proposed multimetric index shows a very good correspondence with the post-classification based on multivariate analysis.  相似文献

The present paper deals with the intercalibration of the Hellenic Evaluation System (HESY) boundaries for the ecological quality of Greek rivers (Northern and Central Greece) [small size and mid altitude (type R-M1) and medium size and low altitude (type R-M2)] with the officially quality boundaries set by the European Commission and the quality boundaries of the multimetric indices STAR_ICMi and ICMi7RM based on the Mediterranean Guadalmed benchmark database. Benthic macroinvertebrates were used as biological elements for the HESY and the multimetric indices STAR_ICMi and ICMi7RM. The Hellenic dataset of benthic macroinvertebrates came from previous data of the Laboratory of Zoology, Department of Biology (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), consisting of 129 samples (41 reference samples) from Northern and Central Greece. Both the multimetric indices performed well against the stressor gradient and indicated strong relationship to the Hellenic Evaluation System. Therefore, they could both be used for the intercalibration process and the assessment of the ecological quality in Northern and Central Greece. Moreover, the use of the HESY in Greek territory (a) can produce comparable results to the STAR_ICMi, which is also used by the Central European and Baltic GIG, assessment method and (b) may be considered reliable in other river types (e.g. R-M3) for which there has not been an intercalibration process or even intercalibration metrics in Europe, due to the lack of reference conditions.  相似文献

A sampling programme was developed in three stream types, of siliceous geology, from the south of Portugal (small and mid-sized lowland streams and small-sized median altitude streams). The samples were taken according to the AQEM site protocol procedure, keeping transport and depositional habitats samples separated. In each stream type, at least 13 sites were studied over a gradient of organic pollution (pre-classification). The benthic macroinvertebrates were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. A Detrended Correspondence Analysis of macroinvertebrate communities identified a gradient of organic pollution strongly related to the first axis. This ordination allowed the establishment of classes of organic pollution using the Kmeans software (post-classification). Metrics based on the macroinvertebrate communities (tolerance, richness, composition and trophic structure) were computed and tested for correlation with the gradient of organic pollution (first axis of DCA). Most of the selected metrics were able to discriminate the four quality classes (high, good, moderate and poor) of ecological status. A multimetric index, integrating ASPT′ index, Trichoptera families and percentage of Gasteropoda, Oligochaeta and Diptera, is proposed to assess the ecological status of Portuguese southern siliceous basins.

In this research, structural and functional responses of benthic macroinvertebrates to mitigation measures (carried out in the dammed and polluted Duraton River, Central Spain, during the 1990s and 2000s) were examined by comparing physicochemical and biological data from the summer of 1987 with data from the summer of 2014. Mitigation measures resulted in significant increases in dissolved oxygen concentrations, as well as in significant reductions of fluoride (F) pollution and short-term flow fluctuations. The macrobenthic community responded positively to improvements in river environmental conditions, exhibiting significant increases in abundance (total density, total biomass and EPT density) and diversity (total family richness and EPT richness) at impacted sampling sites. Furthermore, the presence of relatively sensitive benthic macroinvertebrates after mitigation measures (as indicated by increased values of BMWQ biotic indices) also was the main cause for observed reductions in the environmental impact caused by disturbance points (as indicated by decreased values of the EI index), and for the observed recovering of the trophic structure of the macrobenthic community, with macroinvertebrate scrapers as the functional feeding group most favored. These macroinvertebrate responses to mitigation measures were more marked at sampling sites that initially were more impacted (i.e., nearest to disturbance points), and less apparent at the sampling site that initially was less impacted (i.e., farthest to disturbance points). Within the hydropsychid assemblage, improvements in river environmental conditions clearly favored the presence of Hydropsyche pellucidula and Cheumatopsyche lepida at the expense of the other hydropsychid species. In spite of all monitored environmental improvements and macroinvertebrate positive responses, the need for additional mitigation measures was evident, particularly to reduce high turbidity levels and sedimentation of fine inorganic matter negatively affecting benthic macroinvertebrates downstream from the industrial effluent. Overall, it is concluded that the multimetric approach is an effective technique to assess macroinvertebrate responses to mitigation measures in river ecosystems.  相似文献

Freshwater ecosystems are affected by a variety of anthropogenic stressors. Temporal variability of biotic communities in these ecosystems makes it difficult to accurately assess the impacts of specific stressors, which has seldom been considered in understudied regions of Asia. We studied the seasonal effects of anthropogenic stressors on stream macroinvertebrates based on sampling every three months over two years at five stream sites in central Taiwan. Several macroinvertebrate metrics (taxon richness, Shannon diversity index, and relative abundance of Trichoptera) were lower during the wet season than the dry season. The presence of dams caused changes in the structure of macroinvertebrate communities, decreased the seasonal variability in relative abundances of Trichoptera, as well as resulted in lower dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations and larger substrate size. The presence of urban areas had less or no influence on environmental factors and structural changes. However, significantly lower total abundance, taxon richness, and relative abundance of Trichoptera occurred in the presence of either dams and/or urban areas. One key management implication from the present study is that bioassessment utilizing macroinvertebrates should be facilitated by awareness of the potential role of temporal factors on the effects of anthropogenic stressors, especially in monsoonal Asia.  相似文献

The WFD/60/2000/EC establishes the use of different biological indicators to assess the ecological status of rivers, in addition to chemical, physical and bacteriological parameters. At this purpose, the present study concerning the river Tenna, a central Apennine watercourse (Italy), aimed to analyse and discuss the information given by two biological indices: the Extended Biotic Index or E.B.I. that uses benthic macroinvertebrates, in the version adapted to the Italian rivers (I.B.E.), and the diatom-based Eutrophication and/or Pollution Index (EPI-D). Sampling has been carried out twice, in May (deep water conditions) and October 2006 (low water conditions), in ten stations along the hydrographic basin of the river. Chemical parameters have been determined monthly during a year because they present a higher variability than biotic indicators. The correlations between the biological and abiotic data obtained have been statistically analysed by means of the Spearman's test. The statistical data, in general, showed a direct correlation between the two biotic indices, and an inverse correlation between these and the chemical-physical and bacteriological parameters. Some of the differences of judgement emerging from the application of the two biotic indices showed a complementary response of the diatoms and macroinvertebrates to various environmental stresses. These results suggest the usefulness of an integrated multidisciplinary approach, in order to obtain a more accurate diagnosis of the health status of the watercourses.  相似文献

The River Luzou flows through a sandy substrate in the South West of France. According to the results of two assessment surveys, the Water Agency appraised that this river may not achieve the good ecological status by 2015 as required by the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC). This ecosystem is impacted by industrial effluents (organic matter, metals and aromatic compounds). In order to assess and characterize the impact, this study aimed to combine a set of taxonomic and non-taxonomic metrics for diatoms, macrophytes, macroinvertebrates and fish along the up- to downstream gradient of the river. Diversity metrics, biological indices, biological and ecological traits were determined for the four biological quality elements (BQE). Various quantitative metrics (biomass estimates) were also calculated for diatom communities. The results were compared to physicochemical analysis. Biological measurements were more informative than physicochemical analysis, in the context of the study. Biological responses indicated both the contamination of water and its intensity. Diversity metrics and biological indices strongly decreased with pollution for all BQE but diatoms. Convergent trait selection with pollution was observed among BQE: reproduction, colonization strategies, or trophic regime were clearly modified at impaired sites. Taxon size and relation to the substrate diverged among biological compartments. Multiple anthropogenic pollution calls for alternate assessment methods of rivers'' health. Our study exemplifies the fact that, in the case of complex contaminations, biological indicators can be more informative for environmental risk, than a wide screening of contaminants by chemical analysis alone. The combination of diverse biological compartments provided a refined diagnostic about the nature (general mode of action) and intensity of the contamination.  相似文献

From autumn 2005 to spring 2008, a study focusing on the collection of Trichoptera larvae was conducted in the catchment of the Guadiamar River (SW Spain). The distribution of caddisfly species in relation with environmental factors was examined. Four groups of species were recognised according to the environmental gradient. A direct ordination analysis (CCA) used to describe assemblage changes among sites corroborated that conductivity, land-use, geomorphological gradient, and temporality were the variables that best explain the Trichoptera distribution, but to establish the relative influence of the land-use variables was difficult. On the other hand, mining pollution appeared to be the main factor explaining Trichoptera community structure. In April 1998 this river system underwent an accidental release of a large mass of toxic mine waste, which exterminated macroinvertebrates in the middle and lower parts and floodplain. Several years later, caddisfly communities in these areas were different from those of unaffected upper reaches. The species assemblage was especially poor in lower river reaches that underwent the permanent, diffuse urban and agricultural pollution. These conditions were tolerated only by Hydropsyche exocellata Duföur.  相似文献

Biotic indices are widely applied for conservation and management of aquatic resources since they allow water resources monitoring agencies to get insight in complex biological data and yield policy relevant information. Despite the worldwide popularity of biotic indices, little information on their use and applicability in Eastern Africa is available. Here, we develop a multimetric index based on macroinvertebrates to assess the ecological condition of natural wetlands in Southwest Ethiopia. Index development was based on a dataset of 222 samples collected during two consecutive years from 63 sites located at eight different wetlands. We used physico-chemical and hydro-morphological variables (land use pattern, habitat alteration, hydrological modification and chemical water quality) to classify sites as reference or degraded. We tested a total of 58 potential metrics representing various aspects of macroinvertebrate assemblages including family richness, composition, tolerance measures and presence and abundance of functional feeding groups. Metrics were selected for the development of a final index based on their sensitivity in discriminating reference from impaired sites, strength of correlation with the anthropogenic disturbance gradient, chemical measurements, and the degree of redundancy. Metrics retained for the final index were:overall family richness, family richness of Ephemeroptera, Odonata and Trichoptera (EOT), and percentage of filterer–collectors. The final index, derived from the sum of three metric scores, was divided into five water quality classes (very bad, bad, moderate, good and very good). Our final multimetric macroinvertebrate index (MMI) distinguished well between reference and impaired wetland sites and showed a significant negative response to a gradient of disturbances (R2 = 0.86, p < 0.05). Moreover, it classified a validation dataset accurately with a correctly classified instances of 80% and a Cohen's Kappa value of 0.6. This MMI can be considered as a robust and sensitive tool that can be applied to evaluate the ecological condition of natural wetlands in Ethiopia, where wetland resources are under high pressure as a result of agricultural activities such as grazing and urbanization.  相似文献

In the last decade, dozens of indices based on macroinvertebrates were developed to evaluate lotic ecosystems. In contrast, very few of these indices have been applied in lentic ecosystems. Natural wetlands in southern Brazil are increasingly threatened by the expansion of irrigated rice. The main objective of this study was to develop a multimetric index based on macroinvertebrates to evaluate the water quality of natural wetlands and rice fields in southern Brazil. Three samplings were carried out over the rice growth cycle in four conventional and four biodynamic rice fields, and four natural wetlands. The wetlands were considered as reference sites, and the conventional and biodynamic rice crops were considered as manipulated sites at different levels of degradation. Seven metrics were included in the final index after passing though sensitivity and correlation tests. The results indicated that our index has a power to detect a gradient of variation in water quality. Natural wetlands had the best water quality, biodynamic crops had intermediate water quality, and the conventional crops had the lowest water quality. We believe that development of this macroinvertebrate-based multimetric index of water quality could be an important tool for monitoring natural wetlands and rice crops in southern Brazil.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal variations of the fish assemblages in mountain streams of China are poorly understood. The relationships between the fish assemblage and selected habitat features were examined in the North Tiaoxi River, one of headwaters of Taihu Lake. A total of 3,348 individuals belonging to 5 orders, 11 families, 25 genera and 34 species were collected including 33 native species and one invasive species. Among those, about 20 species were endemic to China. Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) was applied to compare fish assemblage structures from upstream to downstream during four seasons. Species assemblages differed along the stream continuum, but there was little apparent change associated with the seasons. Species richness and Shannon-Weaver index (H′) tended to increase along the stream continuum from the upstream to downstream and the proportion of invertivorous fish tended to significantly decrease along the continuum with a parallel significant increase in the percentage of omnivores. Fish assemblages were significantly related to both water quality and habitat structure variables. Canonical Correspondence Analysis ordinations (CCA) revealed that 6 of the 14 selected environmental variables had significant relationships with the fish assemblage such as distance to source, stream width, altitude, pH, water depth, and water velocity and different sampling sites were associated with different environmental variables in different seasons. The main differences in fish assemblage structure and diversity within the whole watercourse are probably related to large-scale factors such distance to source, altitude and stream width. Differences of instream characteristics are likely to be caused by natural variability of the ecosystems but also, in some case, by anthropogenic influence like human settlements, agriculture and river embankment and pollution from small factory.  相似文献

More than 100 tons of nitrobenzene and related compounds were released into Songhua River due to the explosion of an aniline production factory in November, 2005. Sediment samples were taken from the heavily polluted drainage canal, one upstream and three downstream river sites. The change of bacterial community structures along the river was studied by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and cloning and sequencing of 16S rRNA genes with five clone libraries constructed and 101 sequences acquired representing 172 clones. Both DGGE profiles and sequences of 16S rRNA genes from clone libraries demonstrated that the contaminated drainage canal and three downstream river sites were similar in that all had Betaproteobacteria , mainly grouped into Comamonadaceae , as the dominant group of bacteria, and all had Firmicutes , primarily as Clostridium spp. These results suggest that these latter two groups of bacteria may play potential roles in degradation and detoxification of nitrobenzene in the present contaminated river environments.  相似文献

Bacterial community structure along the Changjiang River (which is more than 2,500 km long) was studied by using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and clone library analysis of PCR-amplified 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) with universal bacterial primer sets. DGGE profiles and principal-component analysis (PCA) demonstrated that the bacterial community gradually changed from upstream to downstream in both 1998 and 1999. Bacterial diversity, as determined by the Shannon index (H'), gradually decreased from upstream to downstream. The PCA plots revealed that the differences in the bacterial communities among riverine stations were not appreciable compared with the differences in two adjacent lakes, Lake Dongting and Lake Poyang. The relative stability of the bacterial communities at the riverine stations was probably due to the buffering action of the large amount of water flowing down the river. Clone library analysis of 16S rDNA revealed that the dominant bacterial groups changed from beta-proteobacteria and the Cytophaga-Flexibacter-Bacteroides group upstream to high-G+C-content gram-positive bacteria downstream and also that the bacterial community structure differed among the stations in the river and the lakes. The results obtained in this study should provide a reference for future changes caused by construction of the Three Gorges Dam.  相似文献

A total of 57 stonefly species have been recorded in the Hron River. The natural gradient (slope and stream width) and pollution gradient of the river were defined using CCA based on physical, chemical and stonefly data. Stonefly metrics (abundance, richness/diversity, sensitivy/tolerance and functional metrics) were used to estimate the quality of the Hron River and the degree of proximity to its natural state. Similar results were obtained using two different methods. The first method was based on the homogeneity of variance and the interquartile range of different groups of stretches of the Hron River and the second was based on deviations from the expected values of biological metrics in a given stretch of the river. These values continuously decreased with increasing distance from the spring area, with the exception of the saprobic index, which increased in a downstream direction, and the stonefly average score, which did not change significantly along the whole river flow. The Stonefly Average Score (SAS) metric is universal for a variety of habitats such as the Hron River upstream and downstream, and is a reliable indicator of water quality and the natural course of a stream.  相似文献
