Invertebrates account for roughly 95% of all animals, yet surprisingly, little effort has been invested to understand their value in signaling potential environmental endocrine disruption. There has been, however, much recent attention on vitellogenin induction in egg-laying invertebrates and vertebrates as indicators of exposure to estrogenic xenobiotics. Mysid shrimp (Crustacea: Mysidacea) have been put forward by several researchers and regulatory bodies (e.g., US-EPA) as suitable test organisms for the evaluation of environmental endocrine disruption. In view of developing sensitive assays to study endocrine disruption in the estuarine mysid Neomysis integer, we isolated and characterized vitellin, the major yolk protein in eggs. Vitellin was purified using gel filtration and characterized by electrophoresis using different staining procedures. Specific (as shown by Western blotting) polyclonal antibodies were produced in rabbit against the purified vitellin of N. integer. These antisera will be used to develop immunoassays to study vitellogenesis in mysids and to detect potential stimulatory or inhibitory effects of endocrine disruptors on the production of vitellin.  相似文献

We studied the spatial and temporal distribution pattern of three marine mysids (Chlamydopleon dissimile, Metamysidopsis elongata atlantica and Mysidopsis coelhoi) from the Cananeia-Iguape Coastal System, southeast Brazil, in relation to environmental variables and zooplankton abundance. We also analysed mysid reproductive traits, and tested their tolerance to salinity gradients in laboratory experiments. Salinity was identified as a major factor influencing mysid spatial and temporal distribution, selectively limiting their distribution within the estuary. Chlamydopleon dissimile and M. coelhoi were common, but occurred at low abundances throughout the year, whereas the numerically dominant M. elongata atlantica had abundance peaks in spring, when thermohaline conditions were more favourable. Mysid brood size varied interspecifically; the occurrence of juveniles throughout the year indicated that mysids breed continuously in the region. The high biomass of M. elongata atlantica observed in spring confirms the importance of mysids in coastal regions' food webs.  相似文献

Neomysis mercedis, an important invertebrate predator in somelakes and estuaries in North America, occurred at high densities(>2 mysids m-3) in Lake Washington in the early 1960s, aperiod when Daphnia were scarce in the lake. Because Neomysisfeed selectively on Daphnia, it was hypothesized that mysidpredation contributed significantly to the scarcity of Daphnia. To evaluate this hypothesis, mysid abundance was monitored inthe lake (July 1989–February 1992), and whole lake predationimpacts on Daphnia were estimated. Mysid abundance varied from319 million, 0.1 mysids m-3 (February 1992) to 4276 million,1.7 mysids m-3 ( June 1991), and mysid biomass ranged from 1153(October 1991) to 4700 kg dry weight (November 1990). A peakin Daphnia consumption was noted during autumn, when total mysidbiomass was high. In late autumn/winter mysid consumption month-1accounted for 28–95% of Daphnia biomass and 13–38%of production. Mysid densities in this study were 18x and 5xlower than in 1962 and 1975, respectively. By extrapolation,at a density of 3.5 mysids m-3 observed in the early 1960s,total Neomysis consumption demand month-1 exceeded 100% of Daphniabiomass (late autumn–early spring), and 100% of Daphniaproduction (late autumn–winter). Estimates of the totalmysid consumption demand in this study are thus in accord withthe hypothesis that Neomysis could control Daphnia abundancein Lake Washington.  相似文献

In a shallow estuarine system near Beaufort, North Carolina, a period of high winter abundance of the mysidsMysidopsis bigelowi andNeomysis americana was associated with a change in zooplankton species composition, from dominance byAcartia tonsa to dominance byCentropages spp. andSaphirella sp. Both mysids feed onA. tonsa at higher rates than the other copepods. Experiments were carried out in 600–1 000 liter enclosures, in which the initial mysid density was manipulated and the effects on the enclosed copepod community were monitored. Mysid predation had a significant effect on copepod densities. The effects of mysid predation on species composition appeared to depend on the relationship between their prey preferences and the dominant copepod species present in the communities. Under conditions favoring dominance byA. tonsa, the preferred prey species, the results suggested that mysid predation may reduce dominance and increase diversity. But when the less preferredCentropages was dominant, mysid predation had no effect on species composition.  相似文献

The distribution and densities of two mysid species, Neomysis americana and Americamysis bahia in the coastal lagoons of Maryland were investigated using data collected monthly from March 2012 to December 2013. Mysid density was higher in the northern than southern bays in 2013 for Americamysis (P?=?0.043) and Neomysis (P?=?0.004). Neomysis americana density was inversely correlated with temperature (P?Neomysis densities (nos. m?2?±?S.E) were negatively related to the catch-per-unit effort (CPUE?±?S.E) of fish predators (r?=??0.40, ?0.81; P?=?0.051, 0.002, respectively). Mysid density was higher in winter (March, 1.3?±?0.8 and spring, May, 1.4?±?1.3) 2012, when the CPUE of bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli) was relatively low (April: 5.8?±?2.3; and May: 11.9?±?4.5, 2012), than during summer (August, 0.003?±?0.002 nos. m?2), when fish CPUE was relatively high (191.7?±?66.5). The observed seasonal patterns of mysid and fish densities, supported by the fact that mysids comprise 53–97% by weight of the diet of some of the abundant fish species in the bays, suggests a top-down control of mysids by fish predation. However, summer high temperatures in the bays exceeded 22°C, at which juveniles of N. americana have been reported to suffer high mortality, and perhaps contributed to the lower density of mysids in the summer.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in the horizontal and depth distributions of Neomysis mercedis and longfin smelt (Spirinchus thaleichthys) were examined using night-time mid-water trawl and Bongo net samples collected in Lake Washington from July 1989 to February 1992. Mysid density varied spatially, seasonally and yearly. For example, during summer, and fall (odd years), mysid abundance was highest in the northern, and lowest in the southern sections of the lake, except in December 1991 when they were uniformly distributed. In fall (November 1990), mysid density was highest in the central basin of the lake. Furthermore, in winter of even years, highest mysid density occurred in the southern region of the lake, but in the central region in winter (February) of odd year. Longfin smelt horizontal distribution also varied seasonally. For example, density of the 1988 YC smelt (1+) was highest in the northern area of Lake Washington in summer but highest in the southern area in fall. During winter, distribution seemed random. The abundance of the 1990 YC smelt (YoY) was also highest in the northern section of the lake in summer, but highest in the southern section in fall; density remained high in the southern section in winter. But, by late spring when they were more than one year old, the distribution had changed such that highest abundance occurred in the northern and mid-section of the lake. By winter when they were about two years old and about to begin spawning, density had become highest again in the southern section. These suggest extensive movement of mysids and smelt from one area to another, perhaps driven by wind-induced water currents in the lake. Depth distribution patterns of mysids and smelt are discussed. Smelt were captured mainly in the shallow strata (8 m) of the lake during all seasons except during winter when they predominated at 50 m. Mysids were also mainly caught in the shallow strata of the lake during all seasons, although a significant proportion occurred at greater depths (> 30 m). The abundance of both species was positively correlated in spring and summer but negatively correlated in fall. A poor correlation was observed in winter. Negative correlation in fall was primarily due to the occurrence of mysids and smelt in different areas of the lake whereas poor correlation in winter was particularly due to their occurrence at different depths. Because of considerable overlap in the distribution of both species in the lake, mysids face a high risk of predation by smelt. This piece of information is consistent with the hypothesis that smelt control mysid abundance in Lake Washington. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

It has been shown that freshwater pelagic mysid shrimps capture zooplankton at a higher rate in light than in darkness. This has been suggested to be due to facilitation of visual predation on evasive zooplankton prey. To test this hypothesis with Baltic mysid shrimps, and to see whether pelagic (migrating) and littoral (non-migrating) mysids differ in this respect, we compared the feeding rates of Mysis mixta and Praunus flexuosus on the copepod Acartia spp. As light conditions change radically from the beginning of summer to late autumn at the Baltic latitudes, we conducted the experiments during three different times of the year to determine if there was a seasonal response to light in mysids. The feeding rates of pelagic mysids were significantly higher in total darkness than in light. In contrast, the feeding rates of littoral mysids did not differ in the dark and the light in the three different seasons. The decreased feeding of pelagic mysids under well-lit conditions may be an adaptation to avoid visual predation by pelagic fish. In contrast, littoral mysids, which live in the well-lit layer throughout the day, do not show a similar response. The fact that light did not increase feeding in either of the mysid species indicates that these mysid species do not use vision in capturing prey, but rely mainly on mechano-reception.  相似文献

Why competitive exclusion does not limit the number of coexisting plankton species is a persistent question for community ecology. One explanation, the intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH), proposes that elevated species diversity is a product of moderate levels of disturbance that allow the subsequent invasion of less competitive species. Here, we assess the shifts in species diversity in a mysid (Mysidae Dana, 1850) zooplankton community, where at least 10 species have, over the last 15 years, have come to comprise the primary prey base of summer resident gray whales (Eschrictius robustus Lilljeborg, 1861) in Clayoquot Sound, British Columbia. We evaluate trends in the community structure of mysids (species dominance, diversity, and richness) across mysid habitat in the study area during the gray whale foraging season (May–September) for the period 1996 and 2008. Mysid species composition varies among years and diversity has increased as whales shifted their predatory focus from benthic amphipods (Ampeliscidae Costa, 1857) to mysids, near our starting point in 1996. Holmesimysis sculpta Tattersall, 1933 was the dominant species in early years; however, in 2007, the dominance shifted to Neomysis rayi Murdoch, 1885. The habitat restrictions and life history attributes of local populations of coastal mysids leave them vulnerable to the cumulative impacts of increased predation pressure by gray whales. This case study presents a unique examination implicating predation as an agent of disturbance capable of altering the species structure of a local prey community.  相似文献

Feeding rate experiments were conducted for pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha fry [mean fork length ( L F) 39 mm], juveniles (103–104 mm L F) and juvenile chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta (106–107 mm L F). Fishes were presented with small copepod ( Tisbi sp.) or larger mysid shrimp ( Mysidopsis bahia ) prey at varying densities ranging from 1 to 235 prey l−1 in feeding rate experiments conducted at water temperatures ranging from 10·5 to 12·0° C under high light levels and low turbidity conditions. Juvenile pink and chum salmon demonstrated a type II functional response to mysid and copepod prey. Mysid prey was readily selected by both species whereas the smaller bodied copepod prey was not. When offered copepods, pink salmon fry fed at a higher maximum consumption rate (2·5 copepods min−1) than larger juvenile pink salmon (0·4 copepods min−1), whereas larger juvenile chum salmon exhibited the highest feeding rate (3·8 copepods min−1). When feeding on mysids, the maximum feeding rate for larger juvenile pink (12·3 mysids min−1) and chum (11·5 mysids min−1) salmon were similar in magnitude, and higher than feeding rates on copepods. Functional response models parameterized for specific sizes of juvenile salmon and zooplankton prey provide an important tool for linking feeding rates to ambient foraging conditions in marine environments, and can enable mechanistic predictions for how feeding and growth should respond to spatial-temporal variability in biological and physical conditions during early marine life stages.  相似文献

Mesopodopsis africana is an abundant zooplankton species in the currently drought stricken St. Lucia Estuary. The estuary is freshwater-starved, partly because its connection with the large Mfolozi catchment has been discontinued. This is due to the extremely high silt load carried by its waters. A series of in vitro experiments were conducted in May, July, August and December 2006, in order to determine the effect of silt loading on the feeding rate and mortality of M. africana. Mysids were subjected to different sediment concentrations in controlled experiments for a 12-hour period. The turbidity regimes were generated by adding pre-weighed silt concentrations, ranging from 0.03 g/L to 13 g/L, to natural estuarine water. Results in all cases showed a major effect of high silt levels upon food availability, as water chlorophyll losses increased with increased silt concentration. Hindrance in the food collecting abilities appears to have a compounding influence as on two occasions, May and August, ingestion rates decreased with an increase in silt concentration. However, in July, mysid ingestion and clearance rates were higher under increased suspended silt concentrations. In such cases, mysids may be clearing more water under conditions of low food concentration, or alternatively, they may switch to feeding on metazoan prey. In the December experiment, there was no relationship between ingestion rate and silt concentration, possibly because food supplies were sufficient to sustain constant ingestion rates or because mysids increased their clearance rates in the more turbid treatments to compensate for any negative effects of silt. Mysid health also declined, with the mean percentage of survivors decreasing consistently with an increase in silt concentration. Results indicate that the overall effect of increased silt load is negative, and subsequently, increased silt loading in the St. Lucia estuary is expected to have detrimental effects on communities of mysids within the estuary.  相似文献

Summary

The kinetic profiles of vitellin accumulation in the oyster ovary during oocyte growth and the effects in vivo and in vitro of estradiol-17β (E2) on vitellin formation were examined in this study. The relative vitellin content measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) shows an apparent increase as the oocyte develops. Immunoblotting of the vitellin using anti-vitellin indicated that two main bands (179 and 110 kD), which begin to accumulate at an early stage of maturation, become pronounced during oocyte growth. Meanwhile, the major peak of the intact form of vitellin (530 kD) in gel filtration also enlarges with oocyte growth, supporting the results of immunoblot analysis and vitellin determination. E2 treatment in vivo causes significant increases in oocyte diameter and vitellin content in the female oyster. A similar trend was observed in ovarian tissues cultured in the presence of E2. It is concluded that E2 is one of the major factors which control the vitellogenesis in the oyster and that the ovary is undoubtedly the site of synthesis of vitellin.  相似文献

We compared dietary patterns within a temperate estuarine fish assemblage (Suisun Marsh, CA, U.S.A.) during a period of high mysid shrimp abundance and after a major decline in mysid abundance caused by the invasion of the overbite clam Potamocorbula amurensis. Prior to the invasion, high dietary overlap, high stomach fullness, and low niche breadth occurred among the fishes in spring when mysid populations were high. Dietary overlaps decreased and niche breadth increased for all species but the endemic splittail Pogonichthys macrolepidotus in fall when mysid populations were low. Eight native species exhibited lower overall collective overlaps and fuller stomachs than five alien species, suggesting more efficient resource partitioning. After mysid abundance declined, only alien striped bass Morone saxatilis preyed upon mysids in greater than trace amounts. An alien mysid became an important prey for small striped bass, but striped bass also switched to piscivory at a smaller size than when mysids were abundant. Eight of 13 species exhibited significant declines in abundance during the study period, which were concordant with the original importance of mysids in their diets. Our results suggest that altered lower food web dynamics in the San Francisco Estuary caused by the invasion of the overbite clam changed fish diets and have contributed to declines in fish abundance.  相似文献

In this work, we have investigated the involvement of DmCatD, a cathepsin D-like peptidase, and acid phosphatase in the process of follicular atresia of Dipetalogaster maxima, a hematophagous insect vector of Chagas’ disease. For the studies, fat bodies, ovaries and hemolymph were sampled from anautogenous females at representative days of the reproductive cycle: pre-vitellogenesis, vitellogenesis as well as early and late atresia. Real time PCR (qPCR) and western blot assays showed that DmCatD was expressed in fat bodies and ovaries at all reproductive stages, being the expression of its active form significantly higher at the atretic stages. In hemolymph samples, only the immunoreactive band compatible with pro-DmCatD was observed by western blot. Acid phosphatase activity in ovarian tissues significantly increased during follicular atresia in comparison to pre-vitellogenesis and vitellogenesis. A further enzyme characterization with inhibitors showed that the high levels of acid phosphatase activity in atretic ovaries corresponded mainly to a tyrosine phosphatase. Immunofluorescence assays demonstrated that DmCatD and tyrosine phosphatase were associated with yolk bodies in vitellogenic follicles, while in atretic stages they displayed a different cellular distribution. DmCatD and tyrosine phosphatase partially co-localized with vitellin. Moreover, their interaction was supported by FRET analysis. In vitro assays using homogenates of atretic ovaries as the enzyme source and enzyme inhibitors demonstrated that DmCatD, together with a tyrosine phosphatase, were necessary to promote the degradation of vitellin. Taken together, the results strongly suggested that both acid hydrolases play a central role in early vitellin proteolysis during the process of follicular atresia.  相似文献

In a six month mesocosm tank experiment, hypotheses were tested concerning the role of benthopelagic mysid shrimps (Mysidacea) in the near-bottom food web of the Bothnian Sea, in the northern Baltic Sea. The first hypothesis tested was that the mysids interact, through predation, with benthic deposit-feeding Monoporeia affinis amphipods. A second hypothesis tested was that the sediment type is important for the overwintering success of the mysids. Changes in abundance and mass were recorded for M. affinis and mysids when separate and when coexisting, in two sediment types differing in organic content (food level); soft muddy clay (rich) and fine sand (poor). Despite the fact that newborn M. affinis offspring, a plausible target for predation by mysids, were present in substantial numbers in the tanks, no consistent evidence for any interaction between these taxa was found. The biomass of mysids was slightly higher in the muddy clay than in the sand tanks, and the mechanism behind this substrate effect is discussed. A third hypothesis, that the mysids interact with near-bottom zooplankton, was investigated. The tanks were continually supplied with in situ near-bottom sea-water containing a semi-natural assemblage of near-bottom plankton. As a result of mysid predation, tanks with mysids had lower abundance and biomass of cyclopoid copepods than tanks without mysids. Thus, the major interaction found was predation on near-bottom zooplankton by mysids and it is suggested that this interaction could potentially be an important food link, especially during periods with low food availability in the pelagic system.  相似文献

The life history and production characteristics of Neomysis mercedis from two British Columbia lakes were examined for their potential influence on zooplankton and limnetic fish communities. During the day, mysids in shallow Muriel Lake (45 m) were on or near the bottom; in Kennedy Lake (> 100 m), mysids remained deeper than 50 m. In both lakes, mysids spent summer nights at 0–15 m depths despite > 20 °C temperatures. Mysid density was not strongly correlated with lake depth. Mysids generally displayed spring to early summer minima and late summer to fall maxima in numbers and biomass. Single peaks in gravid females and juvenile mysid abundance, and the absence of pronounced seasonal size changes of gravid females suggest that N. mercedis produced a single generation each year. Fecundities of study lake mysids are the lowest on record, and although size-dependent, exhibited unusually high variability. Annual productivity of mysids averaged 485 mg m–2 y–1 (range 205–690). Calculations indicate mysids consume several times more zooplankton per annum than limnetic fish do. N. mercedis is likely an important competitor of juvenile sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) since: (i) sockeye exhibit food limited growth and survival patterns in coastal lakes, (ii) mysids and sockeye consume similar zooplankton prey and (iii) mysids do not contribute greatly to sockeye diet (i.e. < 26% of summer and fall diets by numbers or weight).  相似文献

Mysid shrimps are an important trophic link in the food web of the Baltic Sea. In 2002 and 2003 we investigated species composition, distribution, life cycle and prey in the Bornholm Basin (central Baltic). Three species and one genus were identified: Mysis mixta, Neomysis integer, Mesopodopsis slabberi and Praunus sp. The dominant M. mixta and N. integer occurred in the whole study area but were more abundant in the peripheral, more shallow regions. Size frequency distribution indicated one generation for M. mixta and probably two for N. integer. Main prey of all size classes in both species was the cladoceran Bosmina coregoni maritima during summer and autumn. In spring and winter also copepods of the species Temora longicornis and Pseudocalanus acuspes were important prey items. Detritus and phytoplankton cells were of minor importance and many individuals had empty guts. Mysid shrimps in the deep basin might be advected from more shallow areas, as the abundance of all species was much lower than in coastal regions. The deep Bornholm Basin does not seem to be a favourable habitat, probably due to the inaccessibility of the oxygen deficient bottom layer. Under current hydrographic conditions mysids are probably not important predators of zooplankton and thus not competitors of planktivorous fish in the Bornholm Basin.  相似文献

The use of mysid shrimp, particularly the genusMysidopsis, along with specific testing procedures, has become accepted in aquatic toxicology. Investigators have developed methodologies for both culture and testing of these organisms. Acute and chronic (life cycle) toxicity tests in addition to dredge spoil and effluent tests with mysids are now becoming common. Attempts have been made to use mysids as test organisms in behavioral, physiological, nutritional, and food-chain studies. In general,Mysidopsis spp. have been shown to be as sensitive or more sensitive to toxic substances than other marine species tested. The ease of handling and culture, relative sensitivity to toxicants, short life cycle, small size and direct larval development make these organisms desirable for research purposes. Continued research using mysid species will probably demonstrate even greater usefulness of these organisms in assessment of pollutant impacts on estuarine or marine communities.  相似文献

Gastric evacuation experiments were performed on horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus. Discrete meals of different sizes of krill Meganyctiphanes norvegicus, mysids Neomysis integer , brown shrimp Crangon crangon , and herring Clupea harengus were fed to test the effect of prey type on the gastric evacuation. A general evacuation model without meal size as a variable was fitted to the data on dry weights by means of non-linear regression. With the exception of mysid evacuation the estimated parameters for curvature, predator weight effect, and temperature effect of the general evacuation model were very similar for all other food types and also confirmed the results obtained with smelt Osmerus eperlanus. In contrast the evacuation of mysids showed a strong exponential curvature, rather the effect of prey size than of prey type. The prey specific evacuation constants of the model revealed a linear relationship to the energy content. A general consumption model for field estimates is presented that can be used for prey types that have not yet been tested in the experiments, provided the energy content is known.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of nonylphenol (NP) on survival, growth, sexual development and molting of the mysid Americamysis bahia (Crustacea: Mysidacea), including assay of 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) levels. Seven-day-old mysids were exposed to NP concentrations of 0.3, 1, 3, 10 and 30 microg/L for 14 days. Among growth-related traits we assayed, an effect on body length was the most prominent, with the effects observed at concentrations as low as 1 microg/L NP. In addition, the total number of molting exposed to NP for 14 days was significantly decreased in the treatment groups at 10 or 30 microg/L relative to the controls. These results clearly indicate that subchronic exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of NP affects growth of mysids. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of NP on production of 20E in female mysids during the molting period. Production of 20E in pre-molting mysids exposed to 30 microg/L of NP was lower than those in control groups, and exposure of female mysids to NP disrupted molting cycles. Taken together, the results suggest that environmentally relevant concentrations of NP can disrupt growth of A. bahia via inhibition of 20E levels and an associated delay in molting.  相似文献
