Aggression bioassays were used to investigate nestmate recognition in polygyne laboratory colonies of the imported fire ant, Solenopsis invictaBuren. Unlike workers from polygyne field colonies, laboratory-maintained (>10 weeks) workers exhibited well-developed nestmate recognition. As in monogyne colonies of this species, both heritable and environmentally acquired (diet) odors provided recognition cues and were roughly additive in their effect. Within diet treatments, polygyne colonies responded in a graded fashion to polygyne conspecifics, monogyne conspecifics, and heterospecifics (S. richteri Forel),thus suggesting incipient genetic divergence between the two S. invictasocial forms. Hypotheses to account for the acute intraspecific discrimination observed in the laboratory are presented. Empirical testing of these hypotheses will illuminate ecological constraints and proximate mechanisms underlying the reduced intercolony discrimination associated with natural polygyne colonies of this and other ant species. 相似文献

Water loss rates (WLRs) varied across castes (workers > alate males > alate females) for desert ants in the genera Aphaenogaster, Messor and Pogonomyrmex. Exposure to soil caused increased WLRs in workers and foundresses (mated, dealate females), apparently because of cuticular abrasion caused by nest excavation. Moreover, field‐collected workers and foundresses from incipient nests (those exposed to soil) had similar WLRs, as did unabraded workers and alate females (those unexposed to soil). These data call into question previous adaptive scenarios for differences in WLRs across ant species and castes. For live alate females, WLRs increased over two stages. The first increase occurred immediately after mating, and the second occurred for foundresses collected 2 days later from incipient nests. By contrast, WLRs of HCN‐killed females were unaffected by mating, but increased significantly for foundresses collected from 2‐day‐old nests. 相似文献

Animals such as social insects that live in colonies can recognizeintruders from other colonies of the same or different speciesusing colony-specific odors. Such colony odors usually haveboth a genetic and an environmental origin. When within-colonyrelatedness is high (i.e., one or very few reproductive queens),colonies comprise genetically distinct entities, and recognitionbased on genetic cues is reliable. However, when nests containmultiple queens and colonies comprise multiple nests (polydomy),the use of purely genetically determined recognition labelsmay become impractical. This is due to high within-colony geneticheterogeneity and low between-colony genetic heterogeneity.This may favor the use of environmentally determined recognitionlabels. However, because nests within polydomous colonies maydiffer in their microenvironment, the use of environmental labelsmay also be impractical unless they are actively mixed amongthe nests. Using a laboratory experiment, we found that bothisolation per se and diet composition influenced the cuticularchemical profiles in workers of Formica aquilonia. In addition,the level of aggression increased when both the proportionsof dietary ingredients and the availability of food were altered.This suggests that increased aggression was mediated by changesin the chemical profile and that environmental cues can mediaterecognition between colonies. These results also suggest thatthe underlying recognition cues are mutable in response to extrinsicfactors such as the amount and the composition of food. 相似文献

Disassortative mating is a powerful mechanism stabilizing polymorphisms at sex chromosomes and other supergenes. The Alpine silver ant, Formica selysi, has two forms of social organization—single‐queen and multiple‐queen colonies—determined by alternate haplotypes at a large supergene. Here, we explore whether mate preference contributes to the maintenance of the genetic polymorphism at the social supergene. With mate choice experiments, we found that females and males mated randomly with respect to social form. Moreover, queens were able to produce offspring irrespective of whether they had mated with a male from the same or the alternative social form. Yet, females originating from single‐queen colonies were more fertile, suggesting that they may be more successful at independent colony founding. We conclude that the pattern of asymmetric assortative mating documented from mature F. selysi colonies in the field is not caused by mate preferences or major genetic incompatibilities between social forms. More generally, we found no evidence that disassortative mate preference contributes to the maintenance of polymorphism at this supergene controlling ant social organization. 相似文献

Ecological constraints on the success of independent coloniesare thought to strongly shape the organization of ant societies.One of the most important factors is probably the availabilityof suitable empty nest sites. By population censuses, laboratoryexperiments, and microsatellite analyses, we investigated thecolony and population structure of the small, myrmicine antLeptothorax (Myrafant) nylanderi in a deciduous forest nearWürzburg, Germany, where nest sites appear to be stronglylimited, especially in late summer. Colonies of L. nylanderiinhabit cavities in rotting branches, hollow acorns, grass stems,etc. After hibernation, a temporary overabundance of empty nestsites facilitates the fragmentation of larger colonies intosmaller buds, which, because the species is monogynous, arein part queenless. Nest sites become scarce in summer due torapid deca and both established colonies and young foundingqueens face a severe shortage of suitable nest sites. This leadsto the fusion of established, unrelated colonies, which afterinitial fighting permanently merge and live together. Typicalyonly one queen survives after fusion. Similarly, young matedqueens may seek adoption in alien nests instead of foundingtheir own colonies solitarily, and here again only a singlequeen survives. This temporary intraspecific parasitism maybe an important first step in the evolution of obligatory permanentparasitism, which is widespread in the genus Leptothorax. 相似文献

We investigated sex allocation in three U.K. populations ofthe
facultatively polygynous ant Leptothorax acervorum over1-3 years.
The first main finding was that, across sites, thepopulation sex-investment
ratio changed from significantly femalebiased to significantly male biased
with increasing polygyny.This was consistent with workers controlling sex
allocationand reacting to changes in their population-level relatedness
asymmetry.It was also consistent with local resource competition due to
reproductionby colony budding under polygyny. Worker control was supportedby
the finding that queen number had no effect on sex allocationamong polygynous
colonies. The second main result was that monogynouscolonies consistently
produced more female-biased sex-investmentratios than polygynous colonies in
one site only (Santon). Theresults from Santon supported both the relative
relatednessasymmetry hypothesis and the idea of sex ratio compensationdue to
colony budding. The workers' response to their population-levelrelatedness
asymmetry reinforced the case for relatedness asymmetrybeing influential at
the colony level. The other populationscould have lacked split sex ratios
because polygynous colonieswere either comparatively rare or common, making
them behaveas almost entirely monogynous (Aberfoyle) or polygynous (Roydon)
populations.In Roydon, this was consistent with the inference from allozyme
datathat monogynous and polygynous colonies did not differ in theirworker
relatedness asymmetries. The final principal findingwas that, of hypotheses
linking the colony sex-investment ratiowith sexual productivity, there was
support for the constantfemale hypothesis but not for the constant male, cost

Processing of information from the environment, such as assessing group membership in social contexts, is a major determinant of inclusive fitness. For social insects, recognizing brood origin is crucial for inclusive fitness in many contexts, such as social parasitism and kin conflicts within colonies. Whether a recognition signature is informative in kin conflicts depends on the extent of a genetic contribution into the cues. We investigated colony‐ and matriline‐specific variation in egg surface hydrocarbons in seven species of Formica ants. We show that chemical variance is distributed similarly to genetic variation, suggesting a significant genetic contribution to eggs odors in the genus. Significant among matriline components, and significant correlations between chemical and genetic similarity among individuals also indicate kin informative egg odors in several species. We suggest that egg odor surface variation could play a large role in within colony conflicts, and that a comparative method can reveal novel insight into communication of identity. 相似文献

Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) have, in insects, important physiological and ecological functions, such as protection against desiccation and as semiochemicals in social taxa, including termites. CHCs are, in termites, known to vary qualitatively and/or quantitatively among species, populations, castes, or seasons. Changes to hydrocarbon profile composition have been linked to varying degrees of aggression between termite colonies, although the variability of results among studies suggests that additional factors might have been involved. One source of such variability may be colony age, as termite colony demographics significantly change over time, with different caste and instar compositions throughout the life of the colony. We here hypothesize that the intracolonial chemical profile heterogeneity would be high in incipient termite colonies but would homogenize over time as a colony ages and accumulates older workers in improved homeostatic conditions. We studied caste‐specific patterns of CHC profiles in Coptotermes gestroi colonies of four different age classes (6, 18, 30, and 42 months). The CHC profiles were variable among castes in the youngest colonies, but progressively converged toward a colony‐wide homogenized chemical profile. Young colonies had a less‐defined CHC identity, which implies a potentially high acceptance threshold for non‐nestmates conspecifics in young colonies. Our results also suggest that there was no selective pressure for an early‐defined colony CHC profile to evolve in termites, potentially allowing an incipient colony to merge nonagonistically with another conspecific incipient colony, with both colonies indirectly and passively avoiding mutual destruction as a result. 相似文献

1. The ecological success of social insects lies in their ability to prevent the exploitation of colony resources by competitors or parasites. Nestmate recognition is therefore of crucial importance in maintaining the integrity of the colony. Furthermore, inter‐colony competitive relationships are often complex, as many species discriminate between neighbours and strangers, with reduced (the dear enemy phenomenon) or increased levels of aggression towards nearby colonies, depending on the species. In this context, between‐species comparisons could be particularly helpful to investigate the proximate causes underlying this context‐dependent phenomenon, but these are notoriously lacking. 2. Here an attempt was made to circumvent this drawback by studying three closely related sympatric ant species with very similar life histories that belong to the Neoponera apicalis complex. The present study investigated how nestmate recognition and inter‐colony competitive relationships were influenced by spatial, chemical and genetic distances between colonies. 3. It was found that one species, N. apicalis morph 7, showed a clear dear enemy phenomenon with no influence of chemical and genetic distances, suggesting the existence of a learning process. In contrast, N. apicalis morph 4 and Neoponera verenae morph 1 failed to show any strong discrimination between close and distant non‐nestmates. 4. These results are discussed in the light of the observed interspecific variation in nesting preferences, possibly constraining the opportunities of familiarisation between nearby nests, and modulating the competition for resources between colonies. 5. It is argued that this study further reinforces the relative threat level hypothesis as an ultimate explanation for neighbour–stranger discrimination processes. 相似文献

Studies of phenotypic plasticity have emphasized the effect of the environment on the phenotype, but plasticity can also be used as a tool to study the functional significance of key traits. By inducing variation in phenotypes and testing quantitative models that predict performance based on biological mechanisms, we can develop functionally general models of performance. Pumpkinseed sunfish from lakes with high snail availability have large levator posterior muscles (which are used to crush snail shells), whereas fish from lakes with few snails have relatively small muscles. Here we: (1) quantify differences in the feeding ability of an ontogenetic series of pumpkinseed from two populations; and (2) evaluate whether a biomechanical model can resolve the observed ontogenetic and between-population variation in feeding ecology. Mass, but not length, of the levator posterior muscle in fish from Three Lakes (a lake rich in snails) was greater than for comparably sized fish from Wintergreen Lake (a lake with few snails). Handling times were shorter, crushing strengths were 71% greater, and foraging rate (snail tissue mass consumed per time) and the fraction of thick-shelled snails in the diet were approximately 100% greater for fish from Three Lakes compared to comparably sized fish from Wintergreen. These between-lake differences were not significant after adjusting for variation in pharyngeal morphology, suggesting that the biomechanical model of snail crushing resolved observed ontogenetic and population-level variation in the feeding ecology of pumpkinseed. 相似文献

Abstract In this paper, we analyze and compare nest composition and architecture as well as worker relatedness in three related species of slave-making ants: Rossomyrmex anatolicus, R. minuchae, and R. quandratinodum. Colony structure within nests is an important trait in ants, especially in the case of mixed societies, when host and parasite coexist in the same nest. Data for their respective free-living hosts, Proformica korbi, P. longiseta and P. sp., are also provided. For our study, we integrated a meticulous excavation procedure with a genetic method. We conclude that the average number of parasites, as well as of slaves, is species-specific, whereas nest depth depends on the nest architecture of the host. The genus Rossomyrmex seems to be monogynous and monandrous, whereas Proformica shows differences in the number of queens and mating frequency. R. quandratinodum shows different traits in nest composition (host/parasite ratio: P/R) and architecture. The difference in traits may account for some differences in parasitism: raid process or avoidance of parasitism. 相似文献

Summary A numerical model of an eusocial colony foraging for food showed that, for each set of values of resource density, resource size and recruitment system employed, a given optimal proportion of scouts in the colony maximize the amount of resources retrieved by a colony during a fixed period. The model predicts that ants using mass recruitment systems should have larger colonies with small foragers, and should forage on large food sources. Retrieval of small food sources by small colonies is best achieved with large workers using individual foraging strategies. For mass foragers, several food sources are best retrieved using democratic decision-making systems in recruitment, whereas for very large food sources at very low mean food patch density, autocratic decision-making systems are optimal. Some of the experimental evidence available is discussed in the light of these findings, as they confirm the prediction that large colonies with small workers have mass recruitment systems, whereas workers of small colonies with large workers are generally lone foragers. 相似文献

In polygynous (multiple queens per nest) colonies of socialinsects, queens can increase their reproductive share by layingmore eggs or by increasing the proportion of eggs that developinto reproductive individuals instead of workers. We used polymorphicmicrosatellite loci to determine the genetically effective contributionof queens to the production of gynes (new queens), males, and2 different cohorts of workers in a polygynous population ofthe ant Formica exsecta. For this purpose, we developed a newmethod that can be used for diploid and haplodiploid organismsto quantify the degree of reproductive specialization amongbreeders in societies where there are too many breeders to ascertainparentage. Using this method, we found a high degree of reproductivespecialization among nest-mate queens in both female- and male-producingcolonies (sex ratio is bimodally distributed in the study population).For example, a high effective proportion of queens (25% and79%, respectively) were specialized in the production of malesin female- and male-producing colonies. Our analyses furtherrevealed that in female-producing colonies, significantly fewerqueens contributed to gyne production than to worker production.Finally, we found significant changes in the identity of queenscontributing to different cohorts of workers. Altogether, thesedata demonstrate that colonies of F. exsecta, and probably thoseof many other highly polygynous social insect species, are composedof reproductive individuals differing in their investment togynes, males, and workers. Although social groups are characterized by cooperation, they are also often the scene of conflict. In non-clonal systems, the reproductive interests of group members will differ and individuals may benefit by exploiting the cooperative efforts of other group members. However, such selfish behaviour is thought to be rare in one of the classic examples of cooperation--social insect colonies--because the colony-level costs of individual selfishness select against cues that would allow workers to recognize their closest relatives. In accord with this, previous studies of wasps and ants have found little or no kin information in recognition cues. Here, we test the hypothesis that social insects do not have kin-informative recognition cues by investigating the recognition cues and relatedness of workers from four colonies of the ant Acromyrmex octospinosus. Contrary to the theoretical prediction, we show that the cuticular hydrocarbons of ant workers in all four colonies are informative enough to allow full-sisters to be distinguished from half-sisters with a high accuracy. These results contradict the hypothesis of non-heritable recognition cues and suggest that there is more potential for within-colony conflicts in genetically diverse societies than previously thought. 相似文献

Since its introduction in France 10 years ago, the yellow‐legged hornet, Vespa velutina, has rapidly spread to neighbouring countries (Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Italy and Germany). It showed efficient social traits facilitating its invasive success. Only scarce and incomplete natural history studies were known from its native distribution area. Studying the biology of this species in its invasive distribution range was thus a prerequisite to the implementation of efficient control methods in a near future. During a 3‐year field survey, we collected 77 nests to investigate several of the species' key colony characteristics. Our results enabled us to accurately quantify each of the castes and to better understand their synchronicity throughout the season. Our study showed that mature nests are able to produce up to 13 000 individuals and that the size of mature nests is correlated to the number of individuals produced. This correlation enables the inference of one characteristic from the other. Furthermore, each mature nest can produce up to several hundreds of potential founder queens, a crucial datum in the light of today's unregulated spring queen trapping control campaigns. In addition, nest dissections enabled to record the incidence of nest relocation for the first time in this species. Results are discussed with regards to what is known in other Vespidae species, with a focus on Vespula species that are known to be invasive in many other countries worldwide. 相似文献

Mate recognition is critical to the maintenance of reproductiveisolation, and animals use an array of sensory modalities toidentify conspecific mates. In particular, olfactory informationcan be an important component of mate recognition systems. Weinvestigated whether odor is involved in mate recognition ina sympatric benthic and limnetic species pair of three-spinedsticklebacks (Gasterosteus spp.), for which visual cues andsignals are known to play a role in premating isolation. Weallowed gravid females of each species to choose between waterscented by a heterospecific male and water scented by a conspecificmale. Benthic females preferred the conspecific male stimuluswater significantly more often than the heterospecific malestimulus water, whereas limnetic females showed no preference.These species thus differ in their odor and may also differin their use of olfaction to recognize conspecific mates. Thesedifferences are likely a consequence of adaptation to disparateenvironments. Differences in diet, foraging mode, habitat, andparasite exposure may explain our finding that odor might bean asymmetric isolating mechanism in these sympatric sticklebackspecies. 相似文献

Summary Introduced populations of many invasive ants exhibit low levels of intraspecific aggression. Argentine ants (Linepithema humile), for example, maintain expansive supercolonies in many parts of their introduced range. Recent studies demonstrate that variation in nestmate recognition in L. humile can derive from both environmental and genetic sources. In some ants, pheromones emitted by queens also influence nestmate-recognition behavior. To test if such a phenomenon occurs in Argentine ants, we examined whether levels of intraspecific aggression vary as a function of queen presence or absence in experimental lab colonies. For each of four known supercolonies from southwestern California, we set up a pair of experimental colonies and randomly assigned replicates within each pair to treatment (queen removal) and control (no queen removal) groups. Using two different behavioral assays, we then measured aggressive behavior for ten days, removed queens from colonies in the treatment group, and continued to monitor aggression in both experimental groups for an additional 65 days. Both assays yielded qualitatively similar results: intraspecific aggression remained high throughout the experiment in both experimental groups. 1. Research on human pedestrian dynamics predicts that seemingly small architectural features of the surroundings can have large effects on the behaviour of crowds and the flow of pedestrian traffic, particularly when a crowd is panicked. This theoretical framework might usefully be applied to the study of collective movement within subterranean nests of social insects. 2. We examined the rate of egress from artificial nests by alarmed Linepithema humile ants. In accord with model predictions, but counter to intuition, we found that a partially obstructed exit enhanced the average rate of escape from the nest. 3. The study of traffic flows in subterranean nests is almost non‐existent, but it would be worth studying the effect of nest design elements on collective movements, given the great variety of nest forms among ants and termites. 相似文献
