PurposeThe accuracy of biomechanical models is predicated on the realism by which they represent their biomechanical tissues. Unfortunately, most models use phenomenological ligament models that neglect the behaviour in the failure region. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to test whether a mechanistic model of ligamentous tissue portrays behaviour representative of actual ligament failure tests.ModelThe model tracks the time-evolution of a population of collagen fibres in a theoretical ligament. Each collagen fibre is treated as an independent linear cables with constant stiffness. Model equations were derived by assuming these fibres act as a continuum and applying a conservation law akin to Huxley’s muscle model. A breaking function models the rate of collagen fibre breakage at a given displacement, and was chosen to be a linear function for this preliminary analysis.MethodsThe model was fitted to experimental average curves for the cervical anterior longitudinal ligament. In addition, the model was cyclically loaded to test whether the tissue model behaves similarly.ResultsThe model agreed very well with experiment with an RMS error of 14.23 N and an R2 of 0.995. Cyclic loading exhibited a reduction in force similar to experimental data.Discussion and conclusionThe proposed model showcases behaviour reminiscent of actual ligaments being strained to failure and undergoing cyclic load. Future work could incorporate viscous effects, or validate the model further by testing it in various loading conditions. Characterizing the breaking function more accurately would also lead to better results.  相似文献

Background and objectiveOver the past decades, anterior cruciate ligament injuries have become a considerable public health issue. Due to specific physiological conditions such injuries often demand replacement surgery and can take up to two years to a complete recovery. Using biomaterials able to accelerate the healing process could represent a remarkable progress in the field. The main goal of this article is, therein, to evaluate the mechanical properties of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) fibers with biological properties enhanced by poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PNaSS) grafting when subjected to mechanical stress in different conditions.Materials and methodsPCL fibers were thermal grafted with PNaSS. The grafting density was estimated by the toluidine blue colorimetric assay (TB). The influence of the grafting on in vitro primary ACL fibroblast behavior was evaluated by cell proliferation and fluorescence microscope images. The mechanical behavior was evaluated by tensile experiments in air and water, fatigue experiments and simulated walk efforts.ResultsThe results show that poly(ε-caprolactone) bundles have their mechanical behavior changed by the different surface treatments and nature of mechanical stress. Although, compared with the values of the natural ligament, the poly(ε-caprolactone) has shown superior mechanical properties (Young's Modulus, elastic deformation and ultimate tensile stress) in all studied scenarios. In addition, the pNaSS-grafted surfaces presented a positive influence in the cell proliferation and morphology.ConclusionThe pNaSS-grafted PCL has responded mechanical and biological requests for suitable ligament prosthesis material and could be considered as a promising alternative for ACL reconstruction.  相似文献

Objectives

The aim of this study was to examine the association of +1245G/T polymorphisms in the COL1A1 gene with ACL ruptures in Polish male recreational skiers in a case-control study.

Methods

A total of 138 male recreational skiers with surgically diagnosed primary ACL ruptures, all of whom qualified for ligament reconstruction, were recruited for this study. The control group comprised 183 apparently healthy male skiers with a comparable level of exposure to ACL injury, none of whom had any self-reported history of ligament or tendon injury. DNA samples extracted from the oral epithelial cells were genotyped for the +1245G/T polymorphisms using real-time PCR method.

Results

Genotype distributions among cases and controls conformed to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (p = 0.2469 and p = 0.33, respectively). There was a significant difference in the genotype distribution between skiers and controls (p = 0.045, Fisher''s exact test). There was no statistical difference in allele distribution: OR 1.43 (0.91-2.25), p = 0.101 (two-sided Fisher''s exact test).

Conclusions

The risk of ACL ruptures was around 1.43 times lower in carriers of a minor allele G as compared to carriers of the allele T.  相似文献

Background

Canada''s Neo Rhino Party, a joke political party created in 2006 as a successor to the Parti Rhinocéros, is planning a new regulation to repeal the law of gravity, which could have an important impact on diseases attributable to gravity on earth.

Methods

We sought to estimate the number of quality-adjusted life-years that would be saved if the proposed regulation is passed and determine the cost-effectiveness of adapting Boris Volfson''s antigravity machine1 for use on earth. We performed an economic analysis using a hidden Markov model.

Results

Our results suggest that a microgravity environment would save over 2 million quality-adjusted life-years. The cost for every quality-adjusted life-year saved is estimated to be $328.

Interpretation

Microgravity is the solution to the health care crisis in Canada. In addition, using technological, statistical and medical jargon gives us the opportunity to defy the laws of physics, mathematics and medicine.Canada''s Neo Rhino Party is a joke federal political party that was created in Montréal, Quebec, in 2006 as the successor to the Parti Rhinocéros. Commonly called the Rhinoceros Party in English, this party was a registered political party in Canada from the 1960s to the 1990s. It was founded in 1963 by Jacques Ferron, a Canadian physician and author. The party''s basic credo was “a promise to keep none of our promises.” Its election platforms comprised impossible schemes that were designed to amuse and entertain the voting public. Some Rhinoceros Party promises included reducing the speed of light because it''s much too fast, paving Manitoba to create the world''s largest parking lot, providing higher education by building taller schools and repealing the law of gravity. When this last promise was made in the 1980s, it was unthinkable, that is, until Boris Volfson of Huntington, Indiana, received US Patent 6 960 975 for his design of an antigravity machine.1 The Neo Rhino Party is currently planning a new regulation to repeal the law of gravity that could have an important impact on diseases and other health outcomes attributable to gravity on earth.  相似文献

Background

Zipf''s law states that the relationship between the frequency of a word in a text and its rank (the most frequent word has rank , the 2nd most frequent word has rank ,…) is approximately linear when plotted on a double logarithmic scale. It has been argued that the law is not a relevant or useful property of language because simple random texts - constructed by concatenating random characters including blanks behaving as word delimiters - exhibit a Zipf''s law-like word rank distribution.

Methodology/Principal Findings

In this article, we examine the flaws of such putative good fits of random texts. We demonstrate - by means of three different statistical tests - that ranks derived from random texts and ranks derived from real texts are statistically inconsistent with the parameters employed to argue for such a good fit, even when the parameters are inferred from the target real text. Our findings are valid for both the simplest random texts composed of equally likely characters as well as more elaborate and realistic versions where character probabilities are borrowed from a real text.

Conclusions/Significance

The good fit of random texts to real Zipf''s law-like rank distributions has not yet been established. Therefore, we suggest that Zipf''s law might in fact be a fundamental law in natural languages.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper gives a compact overview of Canadian policy on the law of the sea. Section I looks at Canada's maritime attributes, and the policy interests which arise from them. Section II describes the development of Canada's policy in ten issue areas, and examines the outcomes for Canadian diplomacy at UN‐CLOS. Section III covers the strategy and technique used by Canada in pursuit of its law of the sea objectives, and explores five reasons underlying its high level of influence and success. The conclusions consider Canada as a case study of middle‐power influence, and look at the role of unilateral action in the process of international law‐making.  相似文献

Charonia lampas lampas shell is studied using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction combined analysis of the preferred orientations and cell parameters. The Charonia shell is composed of three crossed lamellar layers of biogenic aragonite. The outer layer exhibits a 0 0 1 fibre texture, the intermediate crossed lamellar layer is radial with a split of its c-axis and single twin pattern of its a-axis, and the inner layer is comarginal with split c-axis and double twinning. A lost of texture strength is quantified from the inner layer outward. Unit-cell refinements evidence the intercrystalline organic influence on the aragonite unit-cell parameters anisotropic distortion and volume changes in the three layers. The simulation of the macroscopic elastic tensors of the mineral part of the three layers, from texture data, reveals an optimisation of the elastic coefficient to compression and shear in all directions of the shell as an overall.  相似文献

The main objective of this work is to develop a three-dimensional finite element model of the L5-S1 segment that is able to simulate its passive mobility measured in vitro . Due to their limited role in segment mobility, an isotropic linear elastic constitutive law was used for cartilage, cancellous and cortical bone. The intervertebral disk ground substance was modeled with a non-linear hyperelastic polynomial law. Fibers of the disk, as well as ligaments, were modeled with piecewise linear springs. Flexion-extension, axial rotation, and lateral bending torques were applied to the model. A comparison with the experimental results obtained on the same segment for these three major motions was conducted. The compliance of the segment subjected to pure torques was found to be similar between numerical and experimental results for all major motions. Coupled motions and translations were also similar, even in their amplitude. For lateral bending, the normal coupled motions originate from the geometry of the disk and not from the facet geometry.  相似文献

Abstract

The recent promulgation of China's offshore petroleum regulations has attracted worldwide attention. The law is of particular importance to foreign investors due to possible massive involvement of foreign interests in China's biggest oil venture. However, the success of this multi‐billion‐dollar offshore oil development program hinges on a single issue: to what extent does China have the sovereign rights over its offshore mineral resources?

The aim of the present paper is to: (1) Review China's position on the continental shelf regime; (2) Discuss China's maritime boundary problems with its coastal neighbors in light of the new law of the sea; (3) Analyze China's options under the status quo in the region; and (4) Note briefly China's oil development policy based on the new offshore regulations.  相似文献

Quantifying the contribution of passive mechanical deformation in the human pharynx to upper airway collapse is fundamental to understanding the competing biomechanical processes that maintain airway patency. This study uses finite element analysis to examine deformation in the passive human pharynx using an intricate 3D anatomical model based on computed tomography scan images. Linear elastic properties are assigned to bone, cartilage, ligament, tendon, and membrane structures based on a survey of values reported in the literature. Velopharyngeal and oropharyngeal cross-sectional area versus airway pressure slopes are determined as functions of Young's moduli of muscle and adipose tissue. In vivo pharyngeal mechanics for small deformations near atmospheric pressure are matched by altering Young's moduli of muscle and adipose tissue. The results indicate that Young's moduli ranging from 0.33 to 14 kPa for muscle and adipose tissue matched the in vivo range of area versus pressure slopes. The developed anatomical model and determined Young's moduli range are expected to be useful as a starting point for more complex simulations of human upper airway collapse and obstructive sleep apnea therapy.  相似文献

ObjectivesMechanical properties of the carotid artery play an important role in the progression of arterial disease such as atherosclerosis. An early change in the mechanical properties of the arteries can be introduced as a novel risk factor for cardiovascular events. The aim of this study is to estimate, in vivo, the elastic biomechanical properties of the internal carotid wall (ICA), from the noninvasive determination of the local arterial wave speed (c).Material and methodsTo achieve this objective, c was determined from a mathematical and physical model developed in our previous work that uses the measurement of the instantaneous blood velocity at two sites by contrast magnetic resonance (PCMR), the study having been conducted on 20 healthy, young and old subjects. The determination of Young's modulus (E) requiring the measurement of the arterial radius (R) and the wall thickness (h), we first estimated the arterial compliance (C). Then from a segmentation of the PCMR image, we evaluated R and thus the elastance given by the product Eh. Finally, in front of the difficulty of measuring h, E was estimated from a statistical study on h.ResultsOur method is sensitive to a variation of the parietal elasticity as it is the case with the age. A statistical test showed that there is a very significant difference between younger and older subjects in terms of speed wave, elastance, compliance, and Young's modulus (p<0.001). Furthermore, these results, in agreement with the reference values reported in the literature, are very promising for detecting a pathological change in parietal elasticity, as is the case in atherosclerosis.ConclusionThus, the in vivo application of this technique shows its potential for clinical evaluation of arterial stiffness ICA as it is fully quantitative, non-invasive and can be performed in real time.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper presents the process of designing a new elastic element replacing a membrane in the chamber stapes prosthesis (ChSP). The results of the study are volume displacement characteristics obtained for the prosthesis and physiological stapes. Simulation tests on a 3D CAD model have confirmed that a properly designed ring can stimulate perilymph with the same or greater efficacy as the physiological stapes footplate placed on the elastic annular ligament. The ChSP with a new elastic element creates a good chance of improving hearing in patients suffering from otosclerosis.  相似文献

Abstract

As Brazil began to emerge as a major power in the years leading up to theThird United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III), national ocean policy came to have a quite continuous, distinctive impact on global law of the sea negotiations. Brazil's participation at UNCLOS III offers a particularly good vantage point from which to analyze its more prominent international role as an emerging major power, its related growth as a maritime power, and its significant contribution to international organization.

UNCLOS III, in turn, affects Brazil. The broad implications of the emerging ocean order for both national and international jurisdiction issues, within which Brazilian ocean policy must operate, are analyzed. Brazil's distinctive position as an emerging power between the industrialized countries and the Third World has conditioned its involvement at UNCLOS III. As a developing state, Brazil has favored revision of the traditional order for the purpose of redressing the balance with the developed states. At the same time, as an emerging power, Brazil has an interest in supporting a stable, open international order. In spite of such policy dilemmas, Brazil stands out as one of the few big potential winners in the Third World from both the seabed and non‐seabed portions of the law of the sea negotiations.  相似文献

Capsule The analyses support the grouping of the three Acanthis species, although a large split is observed between the A. hornemanni subspecies.

Aims To investigate the morphological variation in A. f. islandica among different periods of the year and its morphological differentiation from the other subspecies A. f. flammea and A. f. rostrata, and also from the redpoll species, A. cabaret and the two subspecies of A. hornemanni, exilipes and hornemanni.

Methods The subspecies status of the Icelandic population was evaluated with Amadon's rule, by comparing its variation of traits to the distribution of the traits in different species/subspecies of the group.

Results A. f. islandica is characterized by intermediate wing, bill and tail lengths. Based on the 75% rule, wing length and bill depth can be used to discriminate A. f. islandica from both extreme morphs of redpolls (currently classified as different species); A. hornemanni and A. cabaret, and tail and wing length can distinguish A. f. islandica from its conspecifics A. f. flammea. The overall morphological divergence within the redpoll complex is not supported by association to the studied nuclear markers.

Conclusion The taxonomic status of the three redpoll species is supported by Amadon's rule, however the subspecies status of the Icelandic Redpoll remains unclear.  相似文献

A Fungean solid is derived for membranous materials as a body defined by isotropic response functions whose mathematical structure is that of a Hookean solid where the elastic constants are replaced by functions of state derived from an implicit, thermodynamic, internal energy function. The theory utilizes Biot’s (Lond Edinb Dublin Philos Mag J Sci 27:468–489, 1939) definitions for stress and strain that, in one-dimension, are the stress/strain measures adopted by Fung (Am J Physiol 28:1532–1544, 1967) when he postulated what is now known as Fung’s law. Our Fungean membrane model is parameterized against a biaxial data set acquired from a porcine pleural membrane subjected to three, sequential, proportional, planar extensions. These data support an isotropic/deviatoric split in the stress and strain-rate hypothesized by our theory. These data also demonstrate that the material response is highly nonlinear but, otherwise, mechanically isotropic. These data are described reasonably well by our otherwise simple, four-parameter, material model.  相似文献

Background

Zipf''s law and Heaps'' law are two representatives of the scaling concepts, which play a significant role in the study of complexity science. The coexistence of the Zipf''s law and the Heaps'' law motivates different understandings on the dependence between these two scalings, which has still hardly been clarified.

Methodology/Principal Findings

In this article, we observe an evolution process of the scalings: the Zipf''s law and the Heaps'' law are naturally shaped to coexist at the initial time, while the crossover comes with the emergence of their inconsistency at the larger time before reaching a stable state, where the Heaps'' law still exists with the disappearance of strict Zipf''s law. Such findings are illustrated with a scenario of large-scale spatial epidemic spreading, and the empirical results of pandemic disease support a universal analysis of the relation between the two laws regardless of the biological details of disease. Employing the United States domestic air transportation and demographic data to construct a metapopulation model for simulating the pandemic spread at the U.S. country level, we uncover that the broad heterogeneity of the infrastructure plays a key role in the evolution of scaling emergence.

Conclusions/Significance

The analyses of large-scale spatial epidemic spreading help understand the temporal evolution of scalings, indicating the coexistence of the Zipf''s law and the Heaps'' law depends on the collective dynamics of epidemic processes, and the heterogeneity of epidemic spread indicates the significance of performing targeted containment strategies at the early time of a pandemic disease.  相似文献

We studied the morphology of the copulatory organ of Ortalis canicollis and its evolution in birds. The phallus of O. canicollis is intromittent, with a blind tubular cavity and two distinct regions when erect: the base of the phallus, which shows the mucosa smooth and lined by a pseudostratified columnar epithelium, and the tubular portion, which shows the mucosa lined by a keratinized stratified squamous epithelium with little knobs. The phallus includes two vascular bodies at the cranial portion in the urodeum. A fibrocartilaginous body anchors the tubular portion therefrom up to the eversible portion. A branched elastic ligament inserts on different regions of the tubular portion. The phallus is plesiomorphic in birds and it has disappeared in Megapodius, Leipoa and Neoaves. The asymmetric phallus evolved early and it was retained in the basal branches of birds. The intromittent phallus is plesiomorphic in birds (found in Archosauria's ancestor), but Crypturellus, Numididae, Odontophoridae and Phasianidae have developed a non‐intromittent phallus a posteriori. The blind tubular cavity and the fibrocartilaginous body evolved as an adaptive convergence many times in birds. Therefore, this study shed some light on morphological aspects of the phallus and contributed to understand its evolution in birds.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo evaluate a simple three step procedure to identify people in the general population who are in the preclinical phase of Alzheimer''s disease and dementia.DesignThree year population based cohort study.SettingKungsholmen cohort, Stockholm, Sweden.Participants1435 people aged 75-95 years without dementia.AssessmentsSingle question asking about memory complaints, assessment by mini-mental state examination, and neuropsychological testing.ResultsNone of the three instruments was sufficiently predictive of Alzheimer''s disease and dementia when administered separately. After participants had been screened for memory complaints and global cognitive impairment, specific tests of word recall and verbal fluency had positive predictive values for dementia of 85-100% (95% confidence intervals range from 62% to 100%). However, only 18% of future dementia cases were identified in the preclinical phase by this three step procedure. Memory complaints were the most sensitive indicator of Alzheimer''s disease and dementia in the whole population, but only half the future dementia cases reported memory problems three years before diagnosis.ConclusionThis three step procedure, which simulates what might occur in clinical practice, has a high positive predictive value for dementia, although only a small number of future cases can be identified.

What is already known on this topic

Alzheimer''s disease is characterised by a preclinical phase, during which cognitive deficits are seen before diagnosisElderly people with subjective memory complaints and objective global cognitive impairment have a high risk of developing Alzheimer''s disease and dementia

What this study adds

This three step procedure (self report of memory complaints, test of global cognitive functioning, and then domain specific cognitive tests) has a positive predictivity of 85-100% for Alzheimer''s disease and dementia at three yearsHowever, only 18% of people in the preclinical phase can be identified using this procedureAbout half of the people in the preclinical phase of Alzheimer''s disease and dementia do not report problems with their memory three years before diagnosis  相似文献

Abstract

The Blue Blanket Island site (39WW9), a small, fortified, proto-historic Indian village on an island in the Missouri River, in Walworth County, South Dakota, was partially excavated by a River Basin Surveys crew in August 1961. One centrally located earthlodge, sections of the fortification, storage pits, and middens were excavated. Artifacts were scanty but architectural details were informative. The lodge was 18 sided with a short entry wayto the south (river side) and leaner posts of split cedar. The palisade was of split posts and the ditch was wide and shallow. The site appears to have been an Arikara village of short duration, probably occupied during the 1780’s and 1790’s. The abandoned remains of this village were noted by Lewis and Clark in 1804.  相似文献
