The coding system of finger movements depends on the differences in the characteristics of the muscles that are responsible for these movements. The ability of ultra-wide band (UWB) radar for use as a tool for identifying the movements of each finger is presented. Exercise and teaching of musicians presupposes in the individual the constitutive ability to freely execute the finger movements required in the playing of the instrument. However, in the hand anatomical restrictions may exist that limit the mobility of the fingers and, thereby, the possibility to determine their movements voluntarily. Because of the importance of ultra-wideband (UWB) radar in various applications, short pulse generation in UWB systems has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. In order to shorten the pulse, nonlinear transmission line (NLTL) is imported, which expands the application of step recovery diode (SRD) for pulse generation. Detailed analysis and equations for this SRD and NLTL-based pulse generation are provided and verified by simulation and experimental results. Factors that could cause pulse waveform distortions are also analyzed. The generator circuit presented in this paper generates 130ps and 3.3V pulse, which can be used in UWB radar systems that require sub-nanosecond pulses.  相似文献

The motor system may generate automated movements, such as walking, by combining modular spinal motor synergies. However, it remains unknown whether a modular neuronal architecture is sufficient to generate the unique flexibility of human finger movements, which rely on cortical structures. Here we show that finger movements evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the primary motor cortex reproduced distinctive features of the spatial representation of voluntary movements as identified in previous neuroimaging studies, consistent with naturalistic activation of neuronal elements. Principal component analysis revealed that the dimensionality of TMS-evoked movements was low. Principal components extracted from TMS-induced finger movements resembled those derived from end-postures of voluntary movements performed to grasp imagined objects, and a small subset of them was sufficient to reconstruct these movements with remarkable fidelity. The motor system may coordinate even the most dexterous movements by using a modular architecture involving cortical components.  相似文献

This article deals with the safety assessment of several ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna designs for use in prototype microwave breast imaging systems. First, the performances of the antennas are validated by comparison of measured and simulated data collected for a simple test case. An efficient approach to estimating the specific energy absorption (SA) is introduced and validated. Next, SA produced by the UWB antennas inside more realistic breast models is computed. In particular, the power levels and pulse repetition periods adopted for the SA evaluation follow the measurement protocol employed by a tissue sensing adaptive radar (TSAR) prototype system. Results indicate that the SA for the antennas examined is below limits prescribed in standards for exposure of the general population; however, the difficulties inherent in applying such standards to UWB exposures are discussed. The results also suggest that effective tools for the rapid evaluation of new sensors have been developed.  相似文献

According to the ideomotor theory, actions are represented in terms of their perceptual effects, offering a solution for the correspondence problem of imitation (how to translate the observed action into a corresponding motor output). This effect-based coding of action is assumed to be acquired through action-effect learning. Accordingly, performing an action leads to the integration of the perceptual codes of the action effects with the motor commands that brought them about. While ideomotor theory is invoked to account for imitation, the influence of action-effect learning on imitative behavior remains unexplored. In two experiments, imitative performance was measured in a reaction time task following a phase of action-effect acquisition. During action-effect acquisition, participants freely executed a finger movement (index or little finger lifting), and then observed a similar (compatible learning) or a different (incompatible learning) movement. In Experiment 1, finger movements of left and right hands were presented as action-effects during acquisition. In Experiment 2, only right-hand finger movements were presented during action-effect acquisition and in the imitation task the observed hands were oriented orthogonally to participants’ hands in order to avoid spatial congruency effects. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that imitative performance was improved after compatible learning, compared to incompatible learning. In Experiment 2, although action-effect learning involved perception of finger movements of right hand only, imitative capabilities of right- and left-hand finger movements were equally affected. These results indicate that an observed movement stimulus processed as the effect of an action can later prime execution of that action, confirming the ideomotor approach to imitation. We further discuss these findings in relation to previous studies of action-effect learning and in the framework of current ideomotor approaches to imitation.  相似文献

Future generations of upper limb prosthesis will have dexterous hand with individual fingers and will be controlled directly by neural signals. Neurons from the primary motor (M1) cortex code for finger movements and provide the source for neural control of dexterous prosthesis. Each neuron's activation can be quantified by the change in firing rate before and after finger movement, and the quantified value is then represented by the neural activity over each trial for the intended movement. Since this neural activity varies with the intended movement, we define the relative importance of each neuron independent of specific intended movements. The relative importance of each neuron is determined by the inter-movement variance of the neural activities for respective intended movements. Neurons are ranked by the relative importance and then a subpopulation of rank-ordered neurons is selected for the neural decoding. The use of the proposed neuron selection method in individual finger movements improved decoding accuracy by 21.5% in the case of decoding with only 5 neurons and by 9.2% in the case of decoding with only 10 neurons. With only 15 highly ranked neurons, a decoding accuracy of 99.5% was achieved. The performance improvement is still maintained when combined movements of two fingers were included though the decoding accuracy fell to 95.7%. Since the proposed neuron selection method can achieve the targeting accuracy of decoding algorithms with less number of input neurons, it can be significant for developing brain–machine interfaces for direct neural control of hand prostheses.  相似文献

How motor skills are stored in the nervous system represents a fundamental question in neuroscience. Although musical motor skills are associated with a variety of adaptations [1-3], it remains unclear how these changes are linked to the known superior motor performance of expert musicians. Here we establish a direct and specific relationship between the functional organization of the corticomuscular system and skilled musical performance. Principal component analysis was used to identify joint correlation patterns in finger movements evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation over the primary motor cortex while subjects were at rest. Linear combinations of a selected subset of these patterns were used to reconstruct active instrumental playing or grasping movements. Reconstruction quality of instrumental playing was superior in skilled musicians compared to musically untrained subjects, displayed taxonomic specificity for the trained movement repertoire, and correlated with the cumulated long-term training exposure, but not with the recent past training history. In violinists, the reconstruction quality of grasping movements correlated negatively with the long-term training history of violin playing. Our results indicate that experience-dependent motor skills are specifically encoded in the functional organization of the primary motor cortex and its efferent system and are consistent with a model of skill coding by a modular neuronal architecture [4].  相似文献

The hand is one of the most fascinating and sophisticated biological motor systems. The complex biomechanical and neural architecture of the hand poses challenging questions for understanding the control strategies that underlie the coordination of finger movements and forces required for a wide variety of behavioral tasks, ranging from multidigit grasping to the individuated movements of single digits. Hence, a number of experimental approaches, from studies of finger movement kinematics to the recording of electromyographic and cortical activities, have been used to extend our knowledge of neural control of the hand. Experimental evidence indicates that the simultaneous motion and force of the fingers are characterized by coordination patterns that reduce the number of independent degrees of freedom to be controlled. Peripheral and central constraints in the neuromuscular apparatus have been identified that may in part underlie these coordination patterns, simplifying the control of multi-digit grasping while placing certain limitations on individuation of finger movements. We review this evidence, with a particular emphasis on how these constraints extend through the neuromuscular system from the behavioral aspects of finger movements and forces to the control of the hand from the motor cortex.  相似文献

Previous work (Schieber and Hibbard, 1993) has shown that single motor cortical neurons do not discharge specifically for a particular flexion-extension finger movement but instead are active with movements of different fingers. In addition, neuronal populations active with movements of different fingers overlap extensively in their spatial locations in the motor cortex. These data suggested that control of any finger movement utilizes a distributed population of neurons. In this study we applied the neuronal population vector analysis (Georgopoulos et al., 1983) to these same data to determine (1) whether single cells are tuned in an abstract, three-dimensional (3D) instructed finger and wrist movement space with hand-like geometry and (2) whether the neuronal population encodes specific finger movements. We found that the activity of 132/176 (75%) motor cortical neurons related to finger movements was indeed tuned in this space. Moreover, the population vector computed in this space predicted well the instructed finger movement. Thus, although single neurons may be related to several disparate finger movements, and neurons related to different finger movements are intermingled throughout the hand area of the motor cortex, the neuronal population activity does specify particular finger movements.  相似文献

Objective analysis of hand and finger kinematics is important to increase understanding of hand function and to quantify motor symptoms for clinical diagnosis. The aim of this paper is to compare a new 3D measurement system containing multiple miniature inertial sensors (PowerGlove) with an opto-electronic marker system during specific finger tasks in three healthy subjects. Various finger movements tasks were performed: flexion, fast flexion, tapping, hand open/closing, ab/adduction and circular pointing. 3D joint angles of the index finger joints and position of the thumb and index were compared between systems. Median root mean square differences of the main joint angles of interest ranged between 3.3 and 8.4deg. Largest differences were found in fast and circular pointing tasks, mainly in range of motion. Smallest differences for all 3D joint angles were observed in the flexion tasks. For fast finger tapping, the thumb/index amplitude showed a median difference of 15.8mm. Differences could be explained by skin movement artifacts caused by relative marker movements of the marker system, particularly during fast tasks; large movement accelerations and angular velocities which exceeded the range of the inertial sensors; and by differences in segment calibrations between systems. The PowerGlove is a system that can be of value to measure 3D hand and finger kinematics and positions in an ambulatory setting. The reported differences need to be taken into account when applying the system in studies understanding the hand function and quantifying hand motor symptoms in clinical practice.  相似文献

Electrophysiological and behavioral studies in primary dystonia suggest abnormalities during movement preparation, but this crucial phase preceding movement onset has not yet been studied specifically with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). To identify abnormalities in brain activation during movement preparation, we used event-related fMRI to analyze behaviorally unimpaired sequential finger movements in 18 patients with task-specific focal hand dystonia (FHD) and 18 healthy subjects. Patients and controls executed self-initiated or externally cued prelearnt four-digit sequential movements using either right or left hands. In FHD patients, motor performance of the sequential finger task was not associated with task-related dystonic posturing and their activation levels during motor execution were highly comparable with controls. On the other hand reduced activation was observed during movement preparation in the FHD patients in left premotor cortex / precentral gyrus for all conditions, and for self-initiation additionally in supplementary motor area, left mid-insula and anterior putamen, independent of effector side. Findings argue for abnormalities of early stages of motor control in FHD, manifesting during movement preparation. Since deficits map to regions involved in the coding of motor programs, we propose that task-specific dystonia is characterized by abnormalities during recruitment of motor programs: these do not manifest at the behavioral level during simple automated movements, however, errors in motor programs of complex movements established by extensive practice (a core feature of FHD), trigger the inappropriate movement patterns observed in task-specific dystonia.  相似文献

Radar is at the forefront for the study of broad‐scale aerial movements of birds, bats and insects and related issues in biological conservation. Radar techniques are especially useful for investigating species which fly at high altitudes, in darkness, or which are too small for applying electronic tags. Here, we present an overview of radar applications in biological conservation and highlight its future possibilities. Depending on the type of radar, information can be gathered on local‐ to continental‐scale movements of airborne organisms and their behaviour. Such data can quantify flyway usage, biomass and nutrient transport (bioflow), population sizes, dynamics and distributions, times and dimensions of movements, areas and times of mass emergence and swarming, habitat use and activity ranges. Radar also captures behavioural responses to anthropogenic disturbances, artificial light and man‐made structures. Weather surveillance and other long‐range radar networks allow spatially broad overviews of important stopover areas, songbird mass roosts and emergences from bat caves. Mobile radars, including repurposed marine radars and commercially dedicated ‘bird radars’, offer the ability to track and monitor the local movements of individuals or groups of flying animals. Harmonic radar techniques have been used for tracking short‐range movements of insects and other small animals of conservation interest. However, a major challenge in aeroecology is determining the taxonomic identity of the targets, which often requires ancillary data obtained from other methods. Radar data have become a global source of information on ecosystem structure, composition, services and function and will play an increasing role in the monitoring and conservation of flying animals and threatened habitats worldwide.  相似文献

New non-ionizing pulsed systems using ultrawideband (UWB) require safety assessment before they can be used by either military or civilian communities. The development of directed energy weaponry intended for use against electronically vulnerable targets, as well as ground-probing radar systems, have used fast-rise-time high-peak-power electromagnetic pulses characteristic of UWB emitters. It has been postulated that these ultrashort pulses might produce electromagnetic transients resulting in tissue damage. Several challenges to this notion have been posed, however. One report found that rats exposed to UWB after receiving a convulsant drug tended toward longer latency to the onset of convulsions than the no-exposure group. Although not statistically significant, the presence of this trend prompted the present study. An ED99 dose of the convulsant pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) or saline was given just before UWB or sham exposure and resultant seizure activity was recorded. The data from the current study show no effect of UWB exposure on PTZ-induced seizure activity, thereby not supporting the tissue damage concerns, at least for the exposure parameters used here.  相似文献

This article describes a neural network model that addresses the acquisition of speaking skills by infants and subsequent motor equivalent production of speech sounds. The model learns two mappings during a babbling phase. A phonetic-to-orosensory mapping specifies a vocal tract target for each speech sound; these targets take the form of convex regions in orosensory coordinates defining the shape of the vocal tract. The babbling process wherein these convex region targets are formed explains how an infant can learn phoneme-specific and language-specific limits on acceptable variability of articulator movements. The model also learns an orosensory-to-articulatory mapping wherein cells coding desired movement directions in orosensory space learn articulator movements that achieve these orosensory movement directions. The resulting mapping provides a natural explanation for the formation of coordinative structures. This mapping also makes efficient use of redundancy in the articulator system, thereby providing the model with motor equivalent capabilities. Simulations verify the model's ability to compensate for constraints or perturbations applied to the articulators automatically and without new learning and to explain contextual variability seen in human speech production.Supported in part by AFOSR F49620-92-J-0499  相似文献

We hypothesized that movement fluctuations in the index finger reflect the integrated result of the coordination of multiple muscles because index finger movements are determined by the cooperation of multiple muscles spanning the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint. To evaluate this hypothesis, the aim of the present study was to examine the fluctuations of the index finger in abduction-adduction and extension-flexion directions during a position-holding task using two laser displacement sensors. Eleven healthy men maintained their index finger position while supporting a load at 5% of the maximal voluntary contraction force. To maintain the position of the index finger, displacement of the index finger in the abduction-adduction and extension-flexion directions was measured from a distance with two laser displacement sensors that were positioned to the lateral side of and above the index finger. The index finger movements fluctuated around the target position in not only the abduction-adduction direction but also the extension-flexion direction. The path length of finger displacement and the standard deviation of finger acceleration were significantly greater in the extension-flexion direction than in the abduction-adduction direction. These results suggest that the index finger movements quantified by two laser displacement sensors reflect the coordination of multiple muscles spanning the MCP joint.  相似文献

Recently, it was found that rhythmic movements (e.g. locomotion, swimmeret beating) are controlled by mutually coupled endogeneous neural oscillators (Kennedy and Davis, 1977; Pearson and Iles, 1973; Stein, 1974; Shik and Orlovsky, 1976; Grillner and Zangger, 1979). Meanwhile, it has been found out that the phase resetting experiment is useful to investigate the interaction of neural oscillators (Perkel et al., 1963; Stein, 1974). In the preceding paper (Yamanishi et al., 1979), we studied the functional interaction between the neural oscillator which is assumed to control finger tapping and the neural networks which control some tasks. The tasks were imposed on the subject as the perturbation of the phase resetting experiment. In this paper, we investigate the control mechanism of the coordinated finger tapping by both hands. First, the subjects were instructed to coordinate the finger tapping by both hands so as to keep the phase difference between two hands constant. The performance was evaluated by a systematic error and a standard deviation of phase differences. Second, we propose two coupled neural oscillators as a model for the coordinated finger tapping. Dynamical behavior of the model system is analyzed by using phase transition curves which were measured on one hand finger tapping in the previous experiment (Yamanishi et al., 1979). Prediction by the model is in good agreement with the results of the experiments. Therefore, it is suggested that the neural mechanism which controls the coordinated finger tapping may be composed of a coupled system of two neural oscillators each of which controls the right and the left finger tapping respectively.  相似文献

We have screened Xenopus laevis cDNA and genomic libraries for finger motif encoding sequences by use of a synthetic oligonucleotide probe coding for a stretch of conserved amino acids, the H/C-link, which joins individual finger loops in several multi-fingered proteins. Our studies reveal that a large number of different cDNA clones encode amino acid sequences predicting multiple units of the metal-coordinating finger structure. Derived proteins are different from each other as well as from the two examples of Xenopus finger proteins reported to date, TFIIIA and X.fin. The 109 finger repeats characterized are derived from 14 different cDNA clones and have been analysed for the presence of conserved and highly variable amino acids, revealing a close structural relatedness among each other as well as with a few selected finger domains from Drosophila and mouse proteins. The results from this comparative sequence analysis are also discussed in terms of the existing models for DNA binding. All sequences are identified in an ovary cDNA library but the patterns of mRNA level for individual finger clones vary greatly during early development. The prevalence of these structures in the oocyte suggests that part of the maternal information for the realization of the developmental program utilized in Xenopus embryogenesis might be transmitted in the form of regulatory, nucleic-acid-binding proteins.  相似文献

Dynamic movement trajectories of low mass systems have been shown to be predominantly influenced by passive viscoelastic joint forces and torques compared to momentum and inertia. The hand is comprised of 27 small mass segments. Because of the influence of the extrinsic finger muscles, the passive torques about each finger joint become a complex function dependent on the posture of multiple joints of the distal upper limb. However, biomechanical models implemented for the dynamic simulation of hand movements generally don’t extend proximally to include the wrist and distal upper limb. Thus, they cannot accurately represent these complex passive torques. The purpose of this short communication is to both describe a method to incorporate the length-dependent passive properties of the extrinsic index finger muscles into a biomechanical model of the upper limb and to demonstrate their influence on combined movement of the wrist and fingers. Leveraging a unique set of experimental data, that describes the net passive torque contributed by the extrinsic finger muscles about the metacarpophalangeal joint of the index finger as a function of both metacarpophalangeal and wrist postures, we simulated the length-dependent passive properties of the extrinsic finger muscles. Dynamic forward simulations demonstrate that a model including these properties passively exhibits coordinated movement between the wrist and finger joints, mimicking tenodesis, a behavior that is absent when the length-dependent properties are removed. This work emphasizes the importance of incorporating the length-dependent properties of the extrinsic finger muscles into biomechanical models to study healthy and impaired hand movements.  相似文献
