In rowing, motor learning may be facilitated by augmented feedback that displays the ratio between actual mean boat velocity and maximal achievable mean boat velocity. To provide this ratio, the aim of this work was to develop and evaluate an algorithm calculating an individual maximal mean boat velocity. The algorithm optimised the horizontal oar movement under constraints such as the individual range of the horizontal oar displacement, individual timing of catch and release and an individual power-angle relation. Immersion and turning of the oar were simplified, and the seat movement of a professional rower was implemented. The feasibility of the algorithm, and of the associated ratio between actual boat velocity and optimised boat velocity, was confirmed by a study on four subjects: as expected, advanced rowing skills resulted in higher ratios, and the maximal mean boat velocity depended on the range of the horizontal oar displacement.  相似文献

It was hypothesized that a crew's rowing performance was predictable based on their total propulsive power, synchrony (a real-time comparison of rower propulsive force magnitudes) and total drag contribution (a measure of the rowers' effect on shell drag forces during the recovery), quantities calculated from individual rower's force-time profiles and recovery kinematics. A rowing pair was equipped with transducers to gather shell velocity, propulsive blade force, oar angular position and seat displacement. Eight subjects (four port, four starboard) participated in two rounds of data collection. The first round pairings were random, while the second round pairings were assigned based on Round 1 results. Regression analysis and ANCOVA were used to test the validity of assumptions inherent in the predictive model and, if applicable, explore a linear model predicting rowing performance based on total propulsive power, synchrony and total drag contribution. Total propulsive power, synchrony and total drag contribution were correlated and further were affected by pairing, violating assumptions inherent in the linear model. The original hypothesis was not supported based on these violations. Important findings include (1) performance cannot be predicted using the simple linear model proposed, (2) rowers' force-time profiles are repeatable between trials, with some but not all rowers adapting their force-time profile dependent on their pair partner, presumably in an effort to increase the level of synchrony between the two, and (3) subtle biomechanical factors may play a critical role in performance.  相似文献

This paper examines changes in the variability of electromyographic (EMG) activity and kinematics as a result of practicing a maximal performance task. Eight subjects performed rapid elbow flexion to a target in the horizontal plane. Four hundred trials were distributed equally over four practice sessions. A potentiometer at the elbow axis of rotation of a manipulandum recorded the angular displacement. The EMG activity of the biceps and the triceps brachii was monitored using Beckman surface electrodes. Limb speed increased while both target error and trajectory (velocity versus position) variability decreased. There was an increase in the absolute measure of total EMG variability (the first standard deviation at each point of the biceps and triceps waveform multiplied together). However, the coefficient of variation (the first standard deviation divided by the mean and the result multiplied by 100) of the mean amplitude value of the individual EMG bursts decreased. The variability of triceps motor time also decreased while the variability biceps motor time remained unchanged. The results demonstrated a clear relationship between kinematic and EMG variability. The EMG and the trajectory data suggest that practice resulted in greater central nervous system control over both the spatial-temporal aspects of movement and the magnitude of the biceps and triceps muscle force-impulses.  相似文献

An analysis of horizontal elbow flexion at maximal velocity was made to determine how different loads affected power output. Twenty male subjects operated a specially constructed dynamometer initially performing a maximal effort isometric trial with the elbow fully extended and then three dynamic trials at each of three loads equal to 75, 50, and 25 per cent of the maximal isometric strength. Angular acceleration was used to calculate forearm torque, and power was obtained by taking the product of torque and angular velocity. Power was found to be a cubic function of time and a fourth-order polynomial function of angular displacement reaching a peak early in the movement. The 50 per cent load resulted in a higher peak level of power than either the 25 or 75 per cent loads.  相似文献

Specific sequences of muscle coordination exist in movements of every sport. In particular, sports involving repetitive movement patterns such as rowing may rely more heavily on coordinated muscle contraction sequencing in order to produce optimal performance. The aim of this study was to monitor the fatigue patterns of the major muscles engaged during the rowing stroke in rowers of varying abilities during a 6-minute continuous maximal rowing effort on a Concept II rowing ergometer. Sixteen male rowers were categorized into 5 groups based on years of training and their average pace of the 6-minute continuous maximal rowing effort. Continuous surface electromyography signals, recorded from brachioradialis, biceps brachii, middeltoid, rectus abdominis, erector spinae, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, and medial gastrocnemius, were used to investigate the influence of local muscle fatigue on optimal muscle coordination sequences during the rowing exercise. Rowers who performed better on the ergometer test and had more rowing experience tended to portray muscle recruitment patterning, which alternately emphasized different major muscle groups in a form of sharing of workload. This sharing allowed mean peak frequency restitution to take place in some muscles, while others took on more of the workload. The muscles of rowers with less experience and lower levels of performance did not appear to exhibit this same phenomenon known as biodynamic compensation. If coaches have a clearer picture of the fatigue patterns and recruitment strategies occurring in their athletes during a maximal effort row, strength training program adaptations could be made to compensate for weaker areas, which may assist rowers in attaining and sustaining more optimal patterns and strategies throughout the exercise effort.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to present an equation that accurately predicts 1 repetition maximum (RM) over a wide range of repetitions to fatigue (RTF) for 4 different machine resistance exercises in postmenopausal women. Seventy trained women (age = 57.4 +/- 3.1 years) performed maximal and submaximal repetitions on leg press, bench press, rowing, and leg adduction machines at the conclusion of a 2-year training program. Maximal repetitions were performed on each exercise in the following ranges: 3-5RM, 6-10RM, 11-15RM, and 16-20RM. Special regard was taken to maintain the identical execution of each test (i.e., range of motion, starting angle, speed of movement). One cubic polynomial (w(i) [0.988-0.0000584 r(i)(3) + 0.00190 r(i)(2) + 0.0104 r(i),] where w(i) is the load of measurement I, and r(i) is the number of repetitions) accurately predicted 1RM from RTF with mean absolute differences between actual 1RM and predicted 1RM for the 4 exercises of 1.5-3.1% and with coefficients of variation of <3.3%. Equation accuracy was independent of the exercise type or the number of RTF. Thus, this study supported the validity of RTF to adequately estimate 1RM over a wide range of repetitions and within different exercises in trained, older female subjects.  相似文献

Pneumatic muscle actuators (PMAs) offer significant advantages over more traditional actuators, which make them prime candidates in rehabilitation devices. A dynamic test station (DTS) is modified to demonstrate the use of a PMA for this application. The DTS includes two dynamic systems: a PMA and a DC servomotor. An overall transfer function was developed utilising characterisation data for the PMA and DC servomotor. A Tustin (bilinear) transform was performed on the overall transfer function to obtain a discrete time system. Model parameters were optimised and used to generate input voltage profiles that achieve isokinetic (constant velocity) task specifications. Percent root mean square error values (PRMSE) between the actual and ideal profiles were used to evaluate the accuracy of this method in achieving isokinetic displacement. For PMA pressures (in kPa) of 150, 350 and 550 PRMSE were 7.80, 5.40 and 2.76, respectively.  相似文献

Motor imagery, i.e., a mental state during which an individual internally represents an action without any overt motor output, is a potential tool to investigate action representation during development. Here, we took advantage of the inertial anisotropy phenomenon to investigate whether children can generate accurate motor predictions for movements with varying dynamics. Children (9 and 11 years), adolescents (14 years) and young adults (21 years) carried-out actual and mental arm movements in two different directions in the horizontal plane: rightwards (low inertia) and leftwards (high inertia). We recorded and compared actual and mental movement times. We found that actual movement times were greater for leftward than rightward arm movements in all groups. For mental movements, differences between leftward versus rightward movements were observed in the adults and adolescents, but not among the children. Furthermore, significant differences between actual and mental times were found at 9 and 11 years of age in the leftward direction. The ratio R/L (rightward direction/leftward direction), which indicates temporal differences between low inertia and high inertia movements, was inferior to 1 at all ages, except for the mental movements at 9 years of age, indicating than actual and mental movements were shorter for the rightward than leftward direction. Interestingly, while the ratio R/L of actual movements was constant across ages, it gradually decreased with age for mental movements. The ratio A/M (actual movement/mental movement), which indicates temporal differences between actual and mental movements, was near to 1 in the adults'' groups, denoting accurate mental timing. In children and adolescents, an underestimation of mental movement times appeared for the leftward movements only. However, this overestimation gradually decreased with age. Our results showed a refinement in the motor imagery ability during development. Action representation reached maturation at adolescence, during which mental actions were tightly related to their actual production.  相似文献

The speed of a competitive rowing crew depends on the number of crew members, their body mass, sex and the type of rowing—sweep rowing or sculling. The time-averaged speed is proportional to the rower?s body mass to the 1/36th power, to the number of crew members to the1/9th power and to the physiological efficiency (accounted for by the rower?s sex) to the 1/3rd power. The quality of the rowing shell and propulsion system is captured by one dimensionless parameter that takes the mechanical efficiency, the shape and drag coefficient of the shell and the Froude propulsion efficiency into account. We derive the biomechanical equation for the speed of rowing by two independent methods and further validate it by successfully predicting race times. We derive the theoretical upper limit of the Froude propulsion efficiency for low viscous flows. This upper limit is shown to be a function solely of the velocity ratio of blade to boat speed (i.e., it is completely independent of the blade shape), a result that may also be of interest for other repetitive propulsion systems.  相似文献

Comparative studies encompassing a wide range of aquatic animals have shown that rowing is exclusively used at low Reynolds numbers ( Re  < 1), whereas flapping is predominantly used at Re  > 100, although few studies have been undertaken to document the transition in individual species that traverse the intermediate Re regime using a single set of appendages. Thus, it is not generally known whether a gradual increase in Re within a system results in a gradual or sudden shift between rowing and flapping. In the present study, we document ventilatory kinematics of a nymphal mayfly Centroptilum triangulifer that develops using a serial array of seven pairs of abdominal gill plates and operates at Reynolds numbers in the range 2–22 during ontogeny. We found that some kinematic variables (stroke frequency and metachronal phase lag) did not change during ontogeny but that others changed substantially. Specifically, gill kinematics in small instars used strokes with large pitch and stroke-plane deviations, whereas larger instars used strokes with minimal pitch and minimal stroke-plane deviation. Gills in larger instars also acquired an intrinsic hinge that allowed passive asymmetric movement between half strokes. Net flow in small animals was directed ventrally and essentially parallel to the stroke plane (i.e. rowing), whereas net flow in large animals was directed dorsally and essentially transverse to the stroke plane (i.e. flapping). The change in whole-gill kinematics from rowing to flapping occurred across a narrow Re range (3–8), which suggests a possible hydrodynamic demarcation between rowing and flapping.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 540–555.  相似文献

Six sedentary students, six orienteers, and six soccer players were each subjected to 15 tests, comprising 120 s of repeated, maximal isokinetic knee extensions. The tests differed with respect to movement velocity (30 degrees.s-1, 120 degrees.s-1, and 300 degrees.s-1), and movement frequency (5 at each velocity). At a certain velocity, a rectilinear relationship was found between muscular performance intensity (expressed either as average power output or as exercise time ratio) and development of fatigue (expressed either as an absolute or as a fractional decline in work output). Significant inter-velocity differences existed between the slopes of these lines at some combinations of performance and fatigue expressions. Only tendencies towards a difference in x-intercept values were found. This x-intercept value can be taken as a measure of the greatest attainable intensity level of performance without the development of fatigue. This suggestion is valuable both in basic physiological research, and as a possible criterion for optimization of muscular performance. At a given exercise time ratio, increasing movement velocity produced increasing fatigue. However, at a given muscular power output--above 15 W approximately--fatigue developed to a greater extent at the low velocity than at the two higher ones, which did not differ significantly. Substantial individual variation was seen in the positions of the low-, medium-, and high-velocity lines. These variations did not depend on the training background. This implies that the validity of using single-velocity, single-frequency tests in determining isokinetic endurance is doubtful.  相似文献

The dynamics and variability of quantitative morphological characters (morphological variables), which undergo changes upon epiboly, were studied by means of vital observations and measurements of developing loach (Misgurnus fossilis L.) embryos within equal time intervals. None of morphological variables, which characterize the dynamics of blastoderm shape, had monotonous dependence on time. In each individual embryo, the intervals of changes in morphological variables in the “normal” direction corresponding to the change of their mean values during the normal course of epiboly alternated with arrests, as well as with the changes of morphological variables in the reverse direction. The dynamics of morphological variables in time, which reflect the sequence of morphological states of the same embryo, and those of individual variations (variations of morphological states of different embryos on the same temporal section) had identical structure. This suggests instability of individual trajectories of morphogenesis or, strictly speaking, their actual absence. It was shown for the first time on the basis of analysis of individual trajectories of morphogenesis that its dynamics corresponded to so-called “determined chaos,” which was previously discussed only as a theoretical possibility. The data obtained suggest that upon approach to the equatorial area of the embryo, the blastoderm marginal zone was elongated in the longitudinal direction and contracted across the axis of its movement. As a result, a positive feedback arises between the cooperated cell movement and the change of shape of the surface, over which the cells move. This leads, due to unstable radial symmetry of this movement, to the formation of embryonic shield.__________Translated from Ontogenez, Vol. 36, No. 3, 2005, pp. 211–221.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Cherdantsev, Tsvetkova.  相似文献

The manner in which anatomical rotation from an individual segment contributes to the position and velocity of the endpoint can be informative in the arena of many athletic events whose goals are to attain the maximal velocity of the most distal segment. This study presents a new method of velocity analysis using dual Euler angles and its application in studying rotational contribution from upper extremity segments to club head speed during a golf swing. Dual Euler angle describes 3D movement as a series of ordered screw motions about each orthogonal axis in a streamlined matrix form-the dual transformation matrix- and allows the translation and rotation component to be described in the same moving frame. Applying this method in biomechanics is a novel idea and the authors have previously applied the methodology to clinical studies on its use in displacement analysis. The focus of this paper is velocity analysis and applications in sports biomechanics. In this study, electrogoniometers (Biometrics, UK) with a frequency of 1000 Hz were attached to a subject during the execution of the swing to obtain the joint angles throughout the motion. The velocity of the club head was then analyzed using the dual velocity which specifies the velocity distribution of a rigid body in screw motion at any point in time as the dual vector. The contributions of each segment to the club-head velocity were also compared. In order to evaluate this method, the calculated position and velocity of the club head were compared to the values obtained from video image analysis. The results indicated that there is good agreement between calculated values and video data, suggesting the suitability of using the Dual Euler method in analyzing a kinematic chain motion.  相似文献

We describe the fine-scale movement of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis based on analyses of video recordings of undisturbed individuals in the two habitats which mainly differed in food availability, urchin barrens and grazing front. Urchin activity decreased as urchin density increased. Individuals alternated between moving and being stationary and their behaviour did not appear to be affected by either current velocity (within the range from 0 to 15 cm s− 1) and temperature (2.3 to 6.0 °C). Movement of individuals at each location was compared to that predicted by a random walk model. Mean move length (linear distance between two stationary periods), turning angle and net squared displacement were calculated for each individual. The distribution of turning angles was uniform at each location and there was no evidence of a relationship between urchin density and either move length or urchin velocity. The random model predicted a higher dispersal rate at locations with low urchin densities, such as barrens habitats. However, the movement was sometimes greater or less than predicted by the model, suggesting the influence of local environmental factors. The deviation of individual paths from the model revealed that urchins can be stationary or adopt a local (displacement less than random), random or directional movement. The net daily distance displaced on the barrens, predicted by a random walk model, was similar to the observed movement recorded in our previous study of tagged urchins at one site, but less than that observed at a second site. We postulate that the random dispersal of urchins allows individuals on barrens to reach the kelp zone where food is more abundant although the time required to reach the kelp zone may be considerable (months to years). Urchins decrease their rate of dispersal once they reach the kelp zone so that they likely remain close to this abundant food sources for long periods.  相似文献

Growth rate is the main breeding goal of fish breeders, but individual selection has often shown poor responses in fish species. The PROSPER method was developed to overcome possible factors that may contribute to this low success, using (1) a variable base population and high number of breeders (Ne > 100), (2) selection within groups with low non-genetic effects and (3) repeated growth challenges. Using calculations, we show that individual selection within groups, with appropriate management of maternal effects, can be superior to mass selection as soon as the maternal effect ratio exceeds 0.15, when heritability is 0.25. Practically, brown trout were selected on length at the age of one year with the PROSPER method. The genetic gain was evaluated against an unselected control line. After four generations, the mean response per generation in length at one year was 6.2% of the control mean, while the mean correlated response in weight was 21.5% of the control mean per generation. At the 4th generation, selected fish also appeared to be leaner than control fish when compared at the same size, and the response on weight was maximal (≈130% of the control mean) between 386 and 470 days post fertilisation. This high response is promising, however, the key points of the method have to be investigated in more detail.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Most phenomena in developmental biology involve or depend upon cell migration. This article describes a comprehensive framework for the characterization and analysis of trajectories defined by cell movement. The following two perspectives are considered: (a) the behavior of each individual cell and (b) interactions between neighboring pairs of cells. METHODS: The measurements considered for individual trajectories include the velocity magnitude and orientation, maximum spatial dispersion, displacement effectiveness, and displacement entropies. Interactions between two trajectories are characterized by comparing the respective velocities. RESULTS: The potential of the overall framework is illustrated using data of moving cells in different biological environments. The work shows that it is possible to use the new algorithm presented here to characterize cell motility. CONCLUSIONS: The features of the algorithm were successful in determining the motility changes under different experimental conditions.  相似文献

In this study we aimed to determine the reliability of the surface electromyography (EMG) of leg muscles during vertical jumping between two test sessions, held 2 weeks apart. Fifteen females performed three maximal vertical jumps with countermovement. The displacement of the body centre of mass (BCM), duration of propulsion phase (time), range of motion (ROM) and angular velocity of the knee and surface EMG of four leg muscles (rectus femoris, vastus medialis. biceps femoris and gastrocnemius) were recorded during the jumps. All variables were analysed throughout the propulsion and mid-propulsion phases. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) for the rectus femoris, vastus medialis, biceps femoris and gastrocnemius were calculated to be 0.88, 0.70, 0.24 and 0.01, respectively. BCM, ROM and time values all indicated ICC values greater than 0.90, and the mean knee angular velocity was slightly lower, at 0.75. ICCs between displacement of the BCM and integrated EMG (IEMG) of the muscles studied were less than 0.50. The angular velocity of the knee did not correlate well with muscle activity. Factors that may have affected reliability were variations in the position of electrode replacement, skin resistance, cross-talk between muscles and jump mechanics. The results of this study suggest that while kinematic variables are reproducible over successive vertical jumps, the degree of repeatability of an IEMG signal is dependent upon the muscle studied.  相似文献

Eight male subjects were asked to swim 25 m at maximal velocity while the use of the arm(s) and legs was alternately restricted. Four situations were examined using one arm (1A), two arms (2A), one arm and two legs (1A2L) and both arms and legs (2A2L, normal swim) for propulsion. A significant mean increase of 10% on maximal velocity was obtained in 1A2L and 2A2L compared to 1A and 2A. A non-significant 4% effect was obtained in 1A. This study focused on the actual contribution of leg kick in the 10% gain in maximal velocity. It was clear that the underwater trajectory of the wrist was modified by the action of the legs (most comparisons P < 0.001). Therefore it was thought that the legs enhanced the generated propulsive force by improving the propulsive action of the arm. The arm action was quantified by selecting typical phases from the filmed trajectory of the wrist, namely forward (F), downwards (D) and backwards (B). Although there was a tendency for individual changes in kinematic parameters (F, D and B) to occur with individual changes in velocity when 2A was compared to 2A2L, no relationship was found between the relative changes in F, D and B and relative changes in velocity. This was illustrated by describing the responses of three individuals who could represent three patterns of contribution by legs and arms to propulsion in high speed swimming.  相似文献

For rigid body POSE estimation, any relative movement of the tracking markers on a segment is often referred to as an artefact; however this may be an important part of the signal within breast biomechanics. This study aimed to quantify differences in breast range of motion when calculated relative to the torso segment using either direct or segment optimised POSE estimation algorithms. Markers on the torso and right nipple were tracked using infrared cameras (200 Hz) during five running gait cycles in three breast support conditions (no bra, everyday bra and sports bra). Multiplanar breast range of motion was calculated relative to the torso segment using two POSE estimation algorithms. First, the torso segment was defined using direct POSE estimation (direct). Second, while standing stationary in the anatomical position; the positional data of the torso markers were used to construct the torso using segment optimised POSE estimation (optimised). The torso segment length defined using direct POSE estimation changed significantly by 3.4 cm compared to that of the segment optimisation POSE estimation in the no bra condition. Subsequently, superioinferior breast range of motion was significantly greater (p<0.017) when calculated using direct POSE estimation, within each of the three breast support conditions. Segment optimisation POSE estimation is recommended to minimise any differences in breast motion associated with intra segment deformation between physical activity types. However, either algorithm is recommended when evaluating different breast support garments, as a correctly fitted bra does not cause the torso markers to move relative to each other.  相似文献

We describe a recently discovered trace fossil from a eurypterid Konservat‐Lagerstätte in the upper Silurian Tonoloway Formation of Pennsylvania, and formally describe contemporaneous traces from the Williamsville Formation Lagerstätte of Ontario. The traces from both localities are assigned here to Arcuites bertiensis igen. et isp. nov. Based on comparisons with previously described eurypterid trackways, neoichnological experiments, and the co‐occurrence with eurypterid remains, Arcuites is interpreted as having been made by the swimming leg (sixth prosomal appendage) of swimming juvenile to adult eurypteroid eurypterids, and represents the first unambiguous trace fossil evidence for eurypterid swimming behaviour. The morphology of Arcuites indicates that eurypteroid eurypterids swam using drag‐based rowing, whereby the animal propelled itself forward by moving its oar blade‐like swimming paddles in an in‐phase backstroke. Arcuites morphology also indicates that the eurypteroid swimming appendage had a greater degree of movement than was previously suggested, and a revised rowing model is proposed. Differences in the abundance of A. bertiensis in the Tonoloway and Williamsville formations suggest a bathymetric control on eurypterid swimming behaviour and trace production. The association of Arcuites with eurypterid body fossils in both units indicates that these Lagerstätten were autochthonous assemblages and provides additional evidence for eurypterid inhabitation of shallow subtidal marine environments in the late Silurian.  相似文献
