This study examines factors affecting androgen and cortisol levels in wild, male golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia). Golden lion tamarins are a cooperatively breeding species in which groups often contain two potentially breeding males. Brothers frequently emigrate together and develop a clear dominance hierarchy, but interactions between them are primarily affiliative. Duos in which the males are not related are less stable. In addition, reproductive skew theory predicts that dominant males will be less likely to share reproduction with related subordinates. As such, we predicted that both androgens and cortisol would be higher in subordinate males unrelated to the dominant male. We also predicted that androgens in breeding males would be higher during the mating season than the birth/infant care season, as per Wingfield's "challenge hypothesis" (1990). Fecal samples were collected from 24 males in 14 social groups and assayed by enzyme immunoassay. Androgen levels were higher in breeding males during the mating season, thus supporting the challenge hypothesis. However, while subordinate males unrelated to the dominant male had significantly lower androgens than any other group, cortisol levels were not correspondingly higher. These results suggest that unrelated subordinate males show measurable reproductive suppression and may use strategies such as infantilization to avert aggression from dominant males.  相似文献

For dominant individuals in cooperatively breeding species, the presence of subordinates is associated with both benefits (i.e. increased reproductive output and other group-living benefits) and costs (i.e. intrasexual competition on reproduction). The biological market theory predicts that dominant individuals are tolerant to same-sex group members when there are only a few subordinates, so as to maximize their own reproductive success. We investigated factors affecting aggression by dominant males and submission by subordinate males for a cooperatively breeding mammal, meerkats, Suricata suricatta. In this species, reproductive conflict occurs between the dominant male and the non-offspring males. As predicted, the number of subordinates in a group was positively associated with the aggression frequency by the dominant male and with the submission frequency by the subordinate males. Relative to the aggression frequency against male offspring, the frequency of aggression against non-offspring males was comparable in small groups, but was higher in large groups. These results indicate that reproductive conflict is present between the dominant male and the non-offspring males but is moderated in groups with small numbers of subordinates. This study provides an empirical data agreeing with the biological market theory in the context of intrasexual competition in cooperatively breeding species.  相似文献

The white-browed sparrow weaver (Plocepasser mahali) is a cooperatively breeding Ploceid finch that lives in groups of up to 11 individuals. Each group consists of a dominant breeding male and female and a varying number of nonreproductive birds that help feed young and defend the group territory. Experimental removal of the dominant male resulted in attempts by other males to take over the group. Removal of a subordinate, nonbreeding male, as a control, resulted in no change of status among group members. During takeover, there was a transitory increase in plasma levels of luteinizing hormone in the new dominant male, but no change in testosterone levels. As reported in previous investigations, dominant males tended to have higher levels of testosterone than females or subordinate males, but this was not related to the heightened aggression of the takeover. Plasma levels of luteinizing hormone, testosterone, and corticosterone did not differ between the other status groups. The possibility that luteinizing hormone, or a hitherto unidentified androgen, may regulate aggression in the white-browed sparrow weaver is discussed.  相似文献

We tested whether subordinate helper males of the Lake Tanganyika cooperatively breeding cichlid Neolamprologus pulcher show elevated excretion levels of the stress hormone cortisol and reduced levels of 11-ketotestosterone and testosterone when living in groups with a small breeder male, compared to similar helper males living in groups with a large breeder male, in a full-factorial repeated measures experimental design. We also measured the same hormones in breeder males with and without helper males. Previous research showed that the size difference between large male helpers and male breeders in groups of this species influences behaviour and growth decisions. Contrary to our expectation, no effect of the size-difference between helper males and breeder males on helper hormone levels was detected. Furthermore, helper males had similar hormone excretion levels to those of size-matched breeder males without helpers, and to small breeder males. There was no influence of egg laying on breeder male and helper hormone levels during the experiment. Interestingly, all three hormone levels were significantly lower in helpers showing elevated levels of submissive behaviour towards the breeders, independently of the size of the breeder males. The low cortisol levels suggest that helper males can successfully reduce stress by appeasing breeder males through submission. Furthermore, helper males showing a high level of submissive behaviour had lower levels of androgens than less submissive helpers, suggesting a lower reproductive potential in submissive helpers. We propose that helper submission may be used as an honest signal of reduced interest in reproduction towards the breeder male in this species.  相似文献

Studies investigating relationships between social parameters (such as dominance rank, rates of aggressive and sexual behaviors) and androgen (particularly, testosterone) levels in male primates have yielded inconsistent results. In the present study, we address the relationship between androgens, male dominance rank and rank-associated behaviors in two groups of captive chimpanzees, a species characterized by a pronounced dominance hierarchy between adult males. By combining behavioral observations with urinary testosterone (T) measurements, we found that the differences in T concentrations between males were small and not obviously related to their dominance rank. T levels were not related to the rates of initiated aggression and copulatory behavior, but a significant negative relationship between male T level and the rates of strong aggression received was apparent. Our findings, combined with those of others, suggest that any relationship between dominance rank and T depends upon the extent to which individual rank-associated behaviors (e.g. aggressive/sexual) are themselves related to T.  相似文献

Cooperatively breeding animals, in which helpers may participatein reproduction with dominant breeders, are ideal species forexamining intraspecific variation in testis size because theyoften exhibit both monogamous breeding (low risk of sperm competition)and polyandrous breeding (high risk) within a population. However,little is known about testis investment as a result of spermcompetition in these animals. The substrate-brooding cichlidfish Julidochromis ornatus has a cooperatively breeding system,in which some males mate monogamously and other males reproduceas dominant breeders or helpers within cooperatively breedinggroups, in which male helpers frequently sire young. We examinedthe relationship between testis investment and male social statusin relation to the risk of sperm competition. As predicted fromsperm competition models, in groups with male helpers, boththe male breeders and the male helpers invested more in testesmass, compared to breeding males without male helpers. We alsofound a positive relationship between the testes mass of malebreeders and their male helpers, suggesting that males increasetheir investment in reproductive capability under the risk ofsperm competition. Sperm competition models also predict thatlarger testes are associated with increased siring success.Our paternity analysis supported this prediction; we found apositive relationship between testis investment by male helpersand the number of offspring they sired.  相似文献

In the adult rhesus monkey, yawning is an androgen-dependent sexually dimorphic behavior with males yawning more frequently than do females reflecting sex differences in circulating androgens. Studies in a variety of species indicate that yawning is mediated by various neurochemicals including dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. In rhesus monkeys, exogenous androgen reliably induces yawning in females to male-like levels. This study investigated whether flutamide, a nonsteroidal anti-androgen, reverses yawning induced by exogenous androgen administration in adult female rhesus monkeys. Six adult female rhesus monkeys were given chronic DHT alone and in combination with daily injections of flutamide and observed for yawning behavior. Treatment with DHT alone significantly increased yawning from 0.3 yawns per 30 min at the pretreatment baseline to 4.7 yawns per 30 min. Concurrent administration of flutamide significantly reduced the rate of yawning to 1.9 yawns per 30 min. These data indicate that flutamide is an effective tool for blocking the central effects of androgens in rhesus monkey females and that androgens regulate yawning similarly in both males and females.  相似文献

In most bird species, male courtship behavior is controlled by testosterone (T) and its metabolites. In species breeding in temperate and arctic regions T circulates at high levels during a relatively short courtship period because high levels of T can be costly in terms of immunocompetence and parental care. Few studies have investigated androgen modulation of courtship behavior in tropical birds. Male golden-collared manakins (Manacus vitellinus) aggregate in leks for several months and perform spectacular, acrobatic courtship displays. Here we examined whether T is elevated in golden-collared manakins during the displaying period and if courtship behavior is modulated by androgen action on androgen receptors. We measured T levels in displaying males at the beginning of the breeding season and again, one month later. In addition, both wild and captive males were treated with the anti-androgen, flutamide, and their courtship behavior was recorded for several weeks. T levels were relatively high shortly after leks were established but decreased substantially a month later, even though the amount of courtship did not change. Flutamide reduced male courtship activity for one week, but display behavior then increased after two weeks of flutamide treatment. Our studies show that androgens modulate male manakin courtship, but the amount of courtship is not directly correlated with the concentration of circulating T. These results suggest that the relationships between androgen and courtship might differ between tropical and temperate birds.  相似文献

The cottontop tamarin, Saguinus oedipus oedipus, is a cooperatively breeding monkey in which mature male and female offspring serve as helpers to assist in rearing younger siblings. Generally, only one female per social group reproduces; breeding restriction is mediated in postpubertal female offspring through low and acyclic levels of reproductive hormones. We investigated (1) reproductive activity of postpubertal male offspring, and (2) whether aggression towards male offspring and a cortisol-mediated stress response might restrict breeding of male offspring in the natal group. We examined sexual behaviour, olfactory communication and urinary hormone levels (testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, luteinizing hormone, cortisol) of the subject males while we manipulated their social environment from housing in natal groups to pairing with a novel female, and after the production of their own offspring. Mounting and erection rates of the male subjects were as high in the natal group as when paired with a novel female. However, most mounts in the natal group were directed towards other males, and complete copulation sequences did not occur with natal-group females. Social environment had no significant effect on olfactory investigation of breeding females. Although hormone levels increased significantly after the subjects were removed from the natal group, the elevation was transient; the hormone levels of subjects in their natal groups did not differ from the levels shown by the same males when successfully producing their own offspring. Male offspring received more contact aggression in the natal group than when paired with the novel female. However, most of the aggression was received from siblings rather than the breeding pair, and levels of cortisol did not correspond with levels of aggression. Thus, at both a behavioural and endocrine level, mature male offspring in captive natal groups were potentially fertile, but sexual activity with natal-group females appeared to be behaviourally restricted and directed instead towards group males. In wild cottontop tamarin groups, this reproductive potential may allow male helpers flexibility to respond to breeding opportunities. Discussions about social behavior are generally limited to fitness effects of interactions occurring between conspecifics. However, many fitness relevant interactions take place between individuals belonging to different species. Our detailed knowledge about the role of hormones in intraspecific interactions provides a starting point to investigate how far interspecific interactions are governed by the same physiological mechanisms. Here, we carried out standardized resident–intruder (sRI) tests in the laboratory to investigate the relationship between androgens and both intra- and interspecific aggression in a year-round territorial coral reef fish, the dusky gregory, Stegastes nigricans. This damselfish species fiercely defend cultivated algal crops, used as a food source, against a broad array of species, mainly food competitors, and thus represent an ideal model system for comparisons of intra-and interspecific territorial aggression. In a first experiment, resident S. nigricans showed elevated territorial aggression against intra- and interspecific intruders, yet neither elicited a significant increase in androgen levels. However, in a second experiment where we treated residents with flutamide, an androgen receptor blocker, males but not females showed decreased aggression, both towards intra- and interspecific intruders. Thus androgens appear to affect aggression in a broader territorial context where species identity of the intruder appears to play no role. This supports the idea that the same hormonal mechanism may be relevant in intra- and interspecific interactions. We further propose that in such a case, where physiological mechanisms of behavioral responses are found to be context dependent, interspecific territorial aggression should be considered a social behavior.  相似文献

Birds living in social groups establish dominance hierarchies, and taking up the dominant position influences behaviour and physiological parameters. In cooperatively breeding white-browed sparrow weavers (Plocepasser mahali), the transition from subordinate helper to dominant breeder male induces the production of a new type of song. This song contains a large number of new syllables and differs in temporal pattern from duet songs produced by all other group members. Here we show that this change in social status of adult males affects the morphology of a behavioural control circuit, the song control system of songbirds that is composed of large neuron populations. The volume of the song control areas HVC and RA and their gene-expression levels depend on males' social status. Dominant males have several times larger testes than subordinates, which is not reflected in circulating androgen and oestrogen levels. Our findings suggest a remarkable differentiation of adult vertebrate brains in relation to changing social cues.  相似文献

Life history theory predicts that mothers should trade off current and future reproductive attempts to maximize lifetime fitness. When breeding conditions are favourable, mothers may either increase investment in the eggs to improve the quality of the offspring or save resources for future reproduction as the good raising environment is likely to compensate for a 'bad start'. In cooperatively breeding birds, the presence of helpers improves breeding conditions so that mothers may vary the number, size and quality of the eggs in response to the composition of the group. Here, we show that in cooperatively breeding carrion crows Corvus corone corone, where nonbreeding males are more philopatric and more helpful at the nest than females, breeding females decreased egg size as the number of subordinate males in the group increased. However, despite the smaller investment in egg size, fledglings' weight increased in groups with more male subordinates, improving post-fledging survival and indicating that helpers fully compensated for the initial 'bad start'. These results highlight a 'hidden effect' of helpers that bears profound implications for understanding the ultimate function of helping.  相似文献

We consider a cooperatively breeding group and find the optimal pattern of reproductive parasitism by a subordinate helper as a function of its body size, and hence the share of reproduction obtained by the subordinate. We develop the model for the social system of the cooperatively breeding cichlid fish Neolamprologus pulcher but the general framework is also applicable to other cooperative systems. In addition to behaving cooperatively by sharing tasks, sexually mature male cichlid helpers may directly parasitize the reproduction of dominant breeders in the group. We investigate the relative influence of life history and behavioural variables including growth, parasitism capacity, future reproductive fitness benefits and costs, relatedness and expulsion risk on the optimal reproductive strategy of subordinates. In a detailed analysis of the parameter space we show that a male helper should base its decision to parasitize primarily on an increase in expulsion risk resulting from reproductive parasitism (punishment), intra-group relatedness and the parasitism capacity. If expulsion risk is high then helpers should not parasitize reproduction at medium body size but should parasitize either when small or large.  相似文献

The effects of temporary removal of the alpha male on the behavior of subordinate adult male vervet monkeys were evaluated. Twelve subordinate males from six captive multimale, multifemale vervet monkey groups were observed in two conditions: when all group members were present and when the alpha male was temporarily removed from each group. In the absence of the alpha male, subordinate males initiated more affiliative behavior and increased the amount of time spent in proximity to females but their rates of aggression were unaltered. Increased affiliative behavior was selectively directed to high-ranking females and their offspring. Under removal conditions, subordinate male behavior did not resemble that of alpha males in intact conditions: they differed in their proximity to and affiliative behavior towards other group members. In the absence of the alpha male, females increased their aggression towards subordinate males. These observations suggest that the presence of alpha males strongly inhibits subordinate males' behavior. When the constraints of the alpha male's presence are removed, subordinate males rapidly engage in behavior that may enhance their likelihood of attaining high rank. In combination with prior studies, the data also indicate that the behaviors involved in the maintenance of high rank by alpha males differ from those subordinates use to acquire dominance. Finally the current study supports the view that aggression by female vervets may be highly influential in determining male ascendency to dominant rank.  相似文献

Grooming is the most common form of affiliative behavior in primates that apart from hygienic and hedonistic benefits offers important social benefits for the performing individuals. This study examined grooming behavior in a cooperatively breeding primate species, characterized by single female breeding per group, polyandrous matings, dizygotic twinning, delayed offspring dispersal, and intensive helping behavior. In this system, breeding females profit from the presence of helpers but also helpers profit from staying in a group and assisting in infant care due to the accumulation of direct and indirect fitness benefits. We examined grooming relationships of breeding females with three classes of partners (breeding males, potentially breeding males, (sub)adult non-breeding offspring) during three reproductive phases (post-partum ovarian inactivity, ovarian activity, pregnancy) in two groups of wild moustached tamarins (Saguinus mystax). We investigated whether grooming can be used to regulate group size by either "pay-for-help" or "pay-to-stay" mechanisms. Grooming of breeding females with breeding males and non-breeding offspring was more intense and more balanced than with potentially breeding males, and most grooming occurred during the breeding females' pregnancies. Grooming was skewed toward more investment by the breeding females with breeding males during the phases of ovarian activity, and with potentially breeding males during pregnancies. Our results suggest that grooming might be a mechanism used by female moustached tamarins to induce mate association with the breeding male, and to induce certain individuals to stay in the group and help with infant care.  相似文献

In most cooperative breeders, dominants suppress the reproductionof subordinates. However, two previous studies of Neolamprologuspulcher, a cooperatively breeding cichlid fish, have suggestedthat socially subordinate helper males sneak fertilizationsfrom dominant breeding males. If such sneaking does occur, boththeoretical work and empirical studies of other fish speciessuggest that sperm competition will select for increased reproductiveinvestment by sneaker males, relative to more dominant males.To address these issues, we quantified gonadal investment andsperm characteristics of 41 N. pulcher male breeders and 62male helpers from 55 groups in Lake Tanganyika. Gonadal investmentfollowed patterns consistent with reproductive suppression,with breeders having considerably larger testes masses thanhelpers. Breeders also had faster and longer swimming spermand a higher percentage of motile sperm compared to helpers.However, sperm characteristics of large helpers were similarto those of breeders, but these same helpers had lower testesmasses. Thus, large helpers had sperm that were physiologicallyequivalent to that of breeders, but their relatively small gonadsimply that they were reproductively suppressed.  相似文献

In birds, territorial aggression during the breeding season is regulated by testosterone (T). However, many bird species also express aggressive behavior during the nonbreeding season, when plasma levels of T are low. It has been suggested that during this period estrogens might play a major role in regulating territorial aggression. In the present study we compared the effects of simultaneous blockage of androgenic and estrogenic actions on territorial aggression during the breeding and nonbreeding seasons in free-living male European stonechats (Saxicola torquata rubicola). European stonechats are of particular interest since they establish territories and form pairs during both the breeding and the nonbreeding seasons. Thus territorial aggression and its endocrine control can be compared between reproductive and non-reproductive contexts. Inhibition of androgenic and estrogenic actions by simultaneous application of Flutamide and ATD reduced territorial aggression during the breeding season, but not during the nonbreeding season. Our results show that androgens and/or estrogens are involved in the endocrine control of territorial aggression in stonechats only in a reproductive context, but not in a non-reproductive one.  相似文献

The hormone prolactin (PRL) is important for the regulation of parental care in many species of mammals, birds and fish, and for alloparental care (care directed at nondescendant young) in some mammals and birds. Its significance in alloparental brood care of cooperatively breeding fish has not yet been assessed. Here, we test the role of PRL in brood care behavior of the cooperatively breeding cichlid Neolamprologus pulcher. The expression of PRL mRNA was determined in the pituitary glands of breeders of both sexes, helpers that showed brood care behavior and nonbreeding fish as controls. In addition, PRL levels were experimentally manipulated in male breeders and helpers by intraperitoneal injections of ovine PRL, and the behavior of these test fish was recorded toward standardized clutches. Adult females had higher levels of PRL mRNA than adult males, which was true both for breeders and nonbreeders. Contrary to expectation, there was no positive correlation between PRL and brood care behavior in any category of test fish, and the experimental application of PRL did not change brood care propensity. Interestingly, brood-caring adult females had significantly lower levels of PRL mRNA than adult female nonbreeders, whereas there was no difference between helpers and similar-sized nonbreeding group members. PRL mRNA levels increased with body mass in juveniles, but decreased with body mass in adults. In conclusion, we found no evidence that elevated levels of PRL are directly involved in the regulation of brood care behavior in this species.  相似文献

This paper examines the role that androgen receptors (ARs) play in modulating aggressive behavior in male song sparrows, Melospiza melodia morphna. Song sparrows are seasonally breeding, territorial birds that maintain year-round territories with male-female pair bonds formed during the spring breeding season. Plasma testosterone levels peak as territories are established and mates acquired. In late summer, testosterone levels fall and remain basal during the non-breeding season. We examined the role of ARs in regulating territorial aggression in captive song sparrows under short- and long-day conditions as well as just prior to, and at the start of the breading season in freely living birds using the nonsteroidal antiandrogen flutamide to block AR function. Birds were implanted with either empty or drug filled silastic implants for 18 to 42 days and then challenged with a novel male decoy to assess the individual birds level of male-male aggression. Freely living birds remained on their home territory and underwent a simulated territorial intrusion, whereas laboratory-held birds were assessed using a laboratory simulated territorial intrusion and remained in their home cage. Experimental treatment of male song sparrows decreased aggressive behavior during the pre-breeding life history substage (March-April) in freely living birds as well as in laboratory-held birds under long-day (16L:8D) conditions. During the early breeding substage (April-May) there was no measurable effect of flutamide treatment on aggressive behavior, nor was there a difference in behavior in the (8L:16D) laboratory birds. This demonstrates that ARs are an important component of the neuroendocrine control of aggressive behavior. Given that flutamide only affected aggression during the pre-breeding substage and in LD birds, the results suggest that AR dependent control of aggressive behavior changes as song sparrow life history states change.  相似文献

Gonadal steroids, most importantly testosterone (T), are considered to be a major factor in the expression of adult song behavior in temperate-zone songbirds. The action of T within specific brain regions involved in the regulation of song may occur either directly, or through its androgenic or estrogenic metabolites. In the present study, we tested steroid-dependence of great tit dawn song by blocking both known pathways of T action by simultaneous implantation of flutamide, an anti-androgen, and ATD, an aromatase inhibitor. By our knowledge, this is the first study investigating the effects of androgen inhibitors on dawn song in free-living birds. Male great tits were implanted during their mate's egg laying stage, being the time of maximal male song activity at dawn. Treatment with ATD and flutamide significantly increased plasma T levels, probably because feedback mechanisms on T secretion were inhibited. The treatment decreased the likelihood of showing dawn song, which is in line with the hypothesis that sex steroids are involved in the endocrine control of song behavior. In males that did show dawn song, we found no evidence for a treatment effect on song quality. Although the implants were present for the larger part of the breeding season, males were able to maintain control of a territory and mate and to complete their brood cycle as successful as control males.  相似文献
