Fecundity of the autumnal moth depends on pooled geometrid abundance without a time lag: implications for cyclic population dynamics 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. The abundance and fecundity-related body size variation of the cyclic autumnal moth Epirrita autumnata were monitored from the early increase phase and throughout the outbreak to the end of the density decline in northernmost Norway during 1999-2006. Another geometrid, the winter moth Operophtera brumata, did not increase in density until the autumnal moth had its post-peak in 2004, and was at its own peak concurrent with the steeply declining autumnal moth abundance in 2005-06. 2. The body size variables measured (forewing lengths of males and females and hind femur lengths of males) of the autumnal moth showed a similar density-dependent response, i.e. increasing density was associated with decreasing body size and fecundity. Nevertheless, regression analyses clearly ranked the pooled geometrid abundance without a time lag as the best predictor for the body size variation, ahead of the abundance of the autumnal moth or past abundance of all geometrids. 3. Nondelayed effects of lowered food quality and absolute shortage of foliage under congested conditions are the most plausible reasons for reduced body size. 4. Two most commonly proposed causal factors of the autumnal moth population cycle, i.e. delayed inducible resistance of the host plant (mountain birch Betula pubescens czerepanovii) and delayed density-dependent parasitism by specialized hymenopteran parasitoids, cannot easily explain the diverging population trends between the autumnal and winter moths. 5. We suggest that either the inducible resistance of the host tree or the host utilization of the most important parasitoids and/or pathogens have to be strictly species-specific between these closely related moth species to produce the population dynamics observed. That fecundity of the autumnal moth was best related to the pooled geometrid abundance weakens support for the former hypothesis, while our lack of host-specific information limits conclusions about the role of natural enemies. 相似文献

Recent DNA barcoding of generalist insect herbivores has revealed complexes of cryptic species within named species. We evaluated the species concept for a common generalist moth occurring in New Guinea and Australia, Homona mermerodes, in light of host plant records and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I haplotype diversity. Genetic divergence among H. mermerodes moths feeding on different host tree species was much lower than among several Homona species. Genetic divergence between haplotypes from New Guinea and Australia was also less than interspecific divergence. Whereas molecular species identification methods may reveal cryptic species in some generalist herbivores, these same methods may confirm polyphagy when identical haplotypes are reared from multiple host plant families. A lectotype for the species is designated, and a summarized bibliography and illustrations including male genitalia are provided for the first time. 相似文献

A small (2.5-cm-wide) vertical (10-cm-high) white object influenced the sex pheromone-mediated flight and landing behaviors of maleEpiphyas postvittana. When the vertical object was positioned on a horizontal surface to the side (3–5 cm) and upwind of a pheromone source (in the middle of the surface), the distribution of landing positions of males on the surface was different from that when the object was not present; males tended to land in positions skewed toward the side of the source that the object was on. The closer the object was positioned to the source, the greater the number of males that landed on the object (rather than on the horizontal surface). This difference in landing positions (when the object was present) corresponded with changes in the flight tracks; the tracks of males flying to the surface with an object were skewed toward the object and had higher amplitude intertrack reversal distances than the tracks of males flying to a surface without a vertical object. Positioning of a vertical object progressively upwind of the source resulted, apparently, in decreased effects on the landing (and presumably flight) behavior of males. The effect of the vertical object on the flight and landing behaviors of males corresponded largely with changes in pheromone plume structure (visualized with smoke) induced by the extra turbulence in the airflow over the source. Thus it appears that the vertical object influences the behavior of maleE. postvittana largely through the olfactory sensory modality. However, when a clear, Mylar object, in place of the white object, was placed on the surface, more males landed on the Mylar object (than did on the white object), suggesting that the vertical object may also influence the behavior of males through the visual modality. 相似文献

Biosynthesis of the sex pheromone components, (Z)-5-tetradecenyl acetate (Z5-14:OAc) and (Z)-7-tetradecenyl acetate (Z7-14:OAc), was investigated in the New Zealand tortricid moth Planotortrix excessana (Walker) by fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analysis of base-methanolyzed extracts of lipids in the sex pheromone gland and through application of various labelled fatty acids. Analysis of the base-methanolyzed gland extracts revealed common FAMEs, including methyl oleate and methyl palmitoleate, as well as the FAMEs of the putative precursors, methyl (Z)-5-tetradecenoate and methyl (Z)-7-tetradecenoate. Application of labelled, saturated fatty acids, myristic, palmitic, and stearic did not result in any significant incorporation of label into either of the unsaturated pheromone components, although label was incorporated into tetradecyl acetate (14:OAc). In contrast, application of labelled oleic acid resulted in incorporation of label into Z5-14:OAc but not into Z7-14:OAc or into 14:OAc, whereas application of labelled palmitoleic acid resulted in incorporation of label into Z7-14:OAc but not into Z5-14:OAc or 14:OAc. These data support a route for biosynthesis of Z5-14:OAc and Z7-14:OAc in this species by limited β-oxidation of the common fatty acyl moieties, respectively, oleate (involving two cycles of 2-carbon chain-shortening) and palmitoleate (involving only one cycle of 2-carbon chain-shortening), and apparently involving no desaturase (other than the common Δ9) specific to sex pheromone biosynthesis. Interestingly, P. excessana females biosynthesize the same component (Z5-14:OAc) from an entirely different route from that of the related species Ctenopseustis obliquana (which biosynthesizes Z5-14:OAc by Δ5-desaturation of myristate). Additionally, the pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide (PBAN) stimulates pheromone biosynthesis in this species. Arch. Insect Biochem. The hemocytes of different types encountered in the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella larvae of each instar and the development of the differential hemocytes counts were herein presented. Hemocytes classes/populations characterized based on their affinity with fluorescent dye (acridine orange) and ultrastructural differences comprised the prohemcoytes (<10–16%), plasmatocytes (22–65%), granulocytes (25–72%), oenocytoids (<1–9%), and spherulocytes (<1%). Prohemcoytes were the smallest cells with a comparatively tremendous nucleus. Plasmatocytes and granulocytes occupied the main proportion of total cell numbers. Oenocytoids were in a most stable presence, i.e. rotund in a diameter of 10 μm and with a nucleus deviated from the central location; however, sometimes with two nuclei which were adjoining with each other. Spherulocytes were rare and only could be observed occasionally. Ultrastructural investigation revealed that hemocytes in the diamondback moth larvae were of the typical model as in the Lepidoptera insect larvae. It is interesting to find that the cell which could phagocytize bacteria in vitro was granulocyte, not the other types of hemocytes, although plasmatocyte was usually declared to participate in this reaction in various previous studies. 相似文献

The vertical distribution of codling moth,Cydia pomonella (L.) within pheromone-treated and untreated apple and pear orchard canopies was determined using tethered virgin females,
unbaited sticky traps, and blacklight observation of released moths. Mating of virgin females tethered at various heights
in untreated orchard canopies increased with placement height from 1–4 m. Application of pheromone dispensers for mating disruption
at 2 and 4 m above the ground greatly decreased mating. Greatest capture of males and females on unbaited sticky traps occurred
at mid- and upper-canopy heights. Total capture of males and females in pheromone-treated plots was not statistically different
than in untreated plots. The percentage of mated females captured on sticky traps did not vary with trap height or pheromone
treatment. Released moths marked with flourescent powder and observed at dark with a blacklight indicated that moths are primarily
distributed high in the canopy. However, males shifted to a position lower in the canopy when pheromone dispensers were placed
2.1 m above the ground. Results suggest that pheromone dispensers be placed in the upper canopy for optimal disruption of
codling moth mating. 相似文献

Immune functions are costly, and immune investment is usually dependent on the individual''s condition and resource availability. For phytophagous insects, host plant quality has large effects on performance, for example growth and survival, and may also affect their immune function. Polyphagous insects often experience a large variation in quality among different host plant species, and their immune investment may thus vary depending on which host plant species they develop on. Larvae of the polyphagous moth Spodoptera littoralis have previously been found to exhibit density‐dependent prophylaxis as they invest more in certain immune responses in high population densities. In addition, the immune response of S. littoralis has been shown to depend on nutrient quality in experiments with artificial diet. Here, I studied the effects of natural host plant diet and larval density on a number of immune responses to understand how host plant species affects immune investment in generalist insects, and whether the density‐dependent prophylaxis could be mediated by host plant species. While host plant species in general did not mediate the density‐dependent immune expression, particular host plant species was found to increase larval investment in certain functions of the immune system. Interestingly, these results indicate that different host plants may provide a polyphagous species with protection against different kinds of antagonisms. This insight may contribute to our understanding of the relationship between preference and performance in generalists, as well as having applied consequences for sustainable pest management. 相似文献

In insects, melanotic encapsulation is an important innate immune response against large pathogens or parasites, and phenoloxidase (PO) is a key enzyme in this process. Activation of prophenoloxidase (proPO) to PO is mediated by a serine proteinase cascade. PO has a tendency to adhere to foreign surfaces including hemocyte surfaces. In this study, we showed that in the naïve larvae of the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta, hemolymph proPO bound to the surface of granulocytes and spherule cells but not to oenocytoids, and about 10% hemocytes had proPO on their surfaces. When larvae were injected with water (injury) or microsphere beads (immune-challenge), hemolymph proPO was activated, and the number of hemocytes with surface proPO/PO increased at 12 h post-injection, but dropped to the normal level at 24 h. Hemocyte surface proPO can be activated in vitro, leading to melanization of these hemocytes. The number of melanized hemocytes from the larvae injected with water or microsphere beads significantly increased. We also showed that neither hemocytes nor cell-free plasma alone triggered melanization of immulectin-2-coated agarose beads in vitro. However, agarose beads were effectively melanized by isolated hemocytes in the presence of cell-free plasma. Our results suggest that activation of hemocyte surface proPO may initiate melanization, leading to the systemic melanization of hemocyte capsules. 相似文献

Pheromone biosynthesis in the redbanded leafroller moth, Argyrotaenia velutinana, was stimulated by homogenates of the bursa copulatrix. Although pheromonotropic activity was also extractable from the ovary, the activity of pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide (PBAN) or bursa extracts was not impaired in isolated abdomens by removal of the ovary. Response to the bursa extracts was dependent on the dose administered and the time of incubation. Amounts of pheromone present in adult females of different ages appeared to be correlated with the extractable amount of pheromonotropic activity from their bursa copulatrix. Decapitation did not result in the suppression of burse factor production. Homogenates of the bursa elicited similar effects in both isolated gland and isolated abdomen incubations, but the brain neuropeptide, PBAN, was less active in the former than in the latter. Bursa extracts stimulated pheromone production in isolated abdomen incubations deprived of the bursa copulatrix, but PBAN did not. Loss of activity of bursa homogenates after treatment with either pronase E or carboxypeptidase Y indicated that the pheromonotropic factor is a proteinaceous substance. The mechanism through which pheromone production is regulated in redbanded leafroller moths is discussed. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Oogenesis in the codling moth, Cydia pomonella, and the role of juvenile hormones (JHs) were addressed. Rudimentary ovarian structures were recognisable in day 3–4 pupae, when haemolymph JH was still undetectable by coupled gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry in the selected ion mode (GC‐MS/SIM). The presence of developing oocytes was observed by light microscopy on day 8, coincident with very low JH titres (0.74 ± 0.05 ng/ml JH II). Chorionation was only evident upon emergence, following an increase in JH in the pharate adult (0h old: 4.71 ± 0.34 ng/ml JH II). Analysis of haemolymph from virgin and mated females indicated that JH II was predominant, with approximately equal and lower quantities of JHs I and III (3.3‐ to 5.0‐fold less). When pupae or newly emerged adults were treated with JH homologues, no alteration in ovarian protein content was apparent, but the JH mimetic, fenoxycarb, depressed the number of oocytes filling ≥ 50% follicular volume. Chorion deposition was stimulated by JHs I, II, or III (10 μg), but not by fenoxycarb (0.05 μg, 10 μg). Mating provided correct stimuli for enhanced choriogenesis and egg laying, and, since haemolymph JH titres were concomitantly elevated (approximately 2‐fold), it was postulated that the rise in JH elicited both these events. Application of JHs to virgin females, however, could not mimic mating; only increases in choriogenesis were induced: JH‐treatment of virgins (or mated insects) significantly decreased oviposition rates over 24 and 48 h and markedly reduced the life‐time total number of eggs. Thirty‐five codling moth (CM, Cydia pomonella L., Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) populations collected in different commercial orchards in six European countries were tested for their susceptibility to Cydia pomonella granulovirus (CpGV‐M). Including previously published data on CpGV‐M resistance, a total of 38 CM colonies showed considerably elevated LC50 values, independent of the country origin. When only few test individuals are available, determination of mortality of neonate larvae at a discriminating concentration range of 104 to 106 OB/ml (>log4) as a direct measure of percentage susceptible individuals in a CM population is more advisable than calculation of LC50 values. The >log4 mortality alone or in combination with the LC50 value can be used for identification of resistance in a population. Results indicated a locally separated but widely spread occurrence of CM populations with low susceptibility to CpGV‐M. The most plausible hypothesis for the emergence of CpGV‐M resistance is its selection by repeated use of CpGV products. 相似文献

We appraised mating disruption (MD) to control pea moth, Cydia nigricana (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), by assessing male attraction to monitor traps, larval pod infestation, and larval age structure in pheromone‐treated and untreated grain pea fields [Pisum sativum L. (Fabaceae)], over a 5‐year period. Cellulose pheromone dispensers were manually attached to the top shoots of pea plants and released 540 mg ha?1 day?1 synthetic pheromone E8,E10‐dodecadien‐1‐yl acetate in a first test series (2000–2001) and ca. 4 200 mg pheromone ha?1 day?1 in a second series (2004–2006). The dispensers had a half‐life of about 30 days. Although male attraction to pheromone monitoring traps was largely suppressed at the edges and within MD fields in both test series, MD treatments did not reduce pod infestation in the open field in 2000 and 2001. In the 2004–2006 series, larval damage reduction was achieved in the majority of the trials but overall MD efficacy in the open field was only 61% and not significant. In contrast, in field cages placed within the experimental sites and supplied with unmated pea moths, MD control was consistently high and significant. There were no obvious differences in the larval age distribution in all MD and control treatments, suggesting that infestations started and developed further similarly. As a univoltine species, C. nigricana larvae stay in the soil of pea fields for hibernation and pupate. The following year, emerging adults disperse and fly to the closest pea crop. Combined emergence site and pea crop treatments were conducted over 2 years to include this early migration phase of C. nigricana adults. However, the emergence site treatments did not enhance MD‐control efficacy. We conclude that mating activity was only prevented in cage tests, whereas substantial mating occurred during the transit phase outside the pheromone‐treated fields either within non‐crop vegetation and/or at the edges of pheromone‐treated pea fields orientated upwind. Thus, resulting gravid female entry can be regarded as the major constraint to reliable MD control. 相似文献

Mating disruption is an environmentally safe plant protection strategy that uses a synthetic copy of an insect pheromone to interfere with sexual communication and hence reproduction. To date, a number of pest moths have been controlled with applications of formulated pheromones as mating disruptants. Recently, however, the first example of resistance to mating disruption was documented in one of the major tea pests in Japan, the smaller tea leafroller moth, Adoxophyes honmai Yasuda (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). To avoid other such cases, it is important to elucidate the mechanism(s) by which the disruptant lost its effectiveness. To this end, we imposed further selection by rearing field‐collected resistant insects with a synthetic pheromone in the laboratory. After more than 70 generations of selection, a strain with quite strong resistance was established, males of which could find and copulate with their mates even in the presence of 1 mg l?1 of disruptant. Although the mating ability of this strain was greatly increased, the composition and blend ratio of the sex pheromone produced and emitted by females were not obviously changed in comparison with those of females sensitive to mating disruption. However, male response to the pheromone blend was markedly broadened after selection so that resistant males could locate a synthetic pheromone source even when it lacked a pheromone component that is normally necessary for attraction. Males capable of locking onto off‐ratio pheromone blends may be better able to find calling females in pheromone‐treated environments than narrowly tuned males because of greater capability of overcoming sensory imbalance. 相似文献

We have demonstrated that larvae of codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L) can successfully complete their first instar when fed apple leaves instead of fruit. Larvae fed leaves after hatching maximized their feeding intensity (about 320 g/larva/day) on day 2. Weight gain revealed a stereotypic sigmoid pattern that peaked on day 3. Although the maximum body weight of larvae fed leaves was 70–85% less than for larvae maintained on apples or on artificial diet, 100% of larvae fed leaves molted to the second instar 3–5 days after hatching. Our investigation revealed a diurnal pattern of leaf ingestion, and neonates' feeding intensity decreased significantly during the scotophase. We also demonstrated that monosodium glutamate (MSG) increased feeding on leaves by codling moth larvae. Depending on the duration of the bioassay, and larval age at time of initial exposure, 0.05 mg/ml and 0.1 mg/ml MSG increased apple leaf consumption by 25–60% over leaves alone. The effect of monosodium glutamate was best demonstrated during the first day following hatching. Exposure to MSG also accelerated molting to the second instar. Larvae exposed to MSG initiated consumption of leaf tissue significantly earlier than control neonates. The feeding stimulatory effect of MSG was not observed if exposure to this chemical was delayed until 3–4 h after hatch. The addition of feeding stimulants to pesticides that act via the alimentary tract may reduce the amount of active ingredients needed to maintain the efficacy of these formulations. Here, we postulate that first instar codling moth larvae are potential targets for treatment with pesticide formulations enhanced with monosodium glutamate. 相似文献
