In spite of strong evidence for viability-based sexual selection and sex ratio adjustments, the blue tit, Parus caeruleus, is regarded as nearly sexually monomorphic and no epigamic signals have been found. The plumage coloration has not, however, been studied in relation to bird vision, which extends to the UV-A waveband (320 to 400 nm). Using molecular sex determination and UV/VIS spectrometry, we report here that blue tits are sexually dichromatic in UV/blue spectral purity (chroma) of the brilliant crown patch. It is displayed in courtship by horizontal posturing and erected nape feathers. A previously undescribed sexual dimorphism in crown size (controlling for body size) further supports its role as an epigamic ornament. Against grey-brown leaf litter and bark during pair formation in early spring, but also against green vegetation, UV contributes strongly to conspicuousness and sexual dimorphism. This should be further enhanced by the UV/bluish early morning skylight (''woodland shade'') in which blue tits display. Among 18 breeding pairs, there was strong assortative mating with respect to UV chroma, but not size, of the crown ornament. We conclude that blue tits are markedly sex dimorphic in their own visual world, and that UV/violet coloration probably plays a role in blue tit mate acquisition.  相似文献

A series of theoretical models of positive assortative mating and sexual selection are contrasted. It is established that for a dominant trait partial positive assortative mating generally implies some fixation, whereas sexual selection exhibits a unique globally stable polymorphism exhibiting Hardy-Weinberg proportions. The effects of monogamy against polygamy do not qualitatively alter the equilibrium outcomes, although the rate of evolutionary change is generally slowed with monogamy vis-à-vis polygamy. For sexual selection the influence of timing of random mating as against preferential mating causes no change in the equilibrium states, although the rates of convergence can be slowed if sexual selection occurs late in the breeding season. Under assortative mating the timing can alter the equilibrium outcomes. The amount of heterozygosity is always deficient in cases of assortative mating, but always exhibits Hardy-Weinberg ratios under a sexual selection mechanism. This suggests that observations consistent with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium states cannot preclude ipso facto certain forms of selection forces, including mating patterns and some natural selection structures.  相似文献

In precopula pairs of amphipod and isopod Crustacea in which males carry females, the males are larger than their mates and mating is size-assortative. Mate-guarding is a product of sexual selection. Size dimorphism and assortative mating have also been attributed to sexual selection but the supporting evidence for amphipods is equivocal. We describe a series of experiments confirming that relatively large male Gammarus pulex L. have an advantage because they can swim against stronger currents when carrying a mate. At higher current speeds, the male/female size ratio which forms is significantly greater, and in field collections size ratios of pairs are higher in streams than in lakes for a number of species. In a simulation we show that a size-assortative pattern inevitably develops if the observed size restriction is used as a rule for pairing. The results are discussed with respect to size-assortative mating, which has been attributed to male selectivity and male-male competition for access to large, fecund females.  相似文献

A quantitative genetic model of the joint evolution of female mating preferences and sexual dimorphism in homologous characters of the sexes is described for polygamous species with no male parental effort, such that mating preferences are selectively neutral and evolve only by indirect selection on genetically correlated characters. The male character and the homologous female character are each under stabilizing natural selection toward an optimum phenotype. At an evolutionary equilibrium the female character under natural selection is at its optimum, whereas there is a line of possible equilibria between female mating preferences and the male character. The line of equilibria may be stable or unstable, depending on the intensity of natural selection, the type of mating preferences, and the inheritance of the characters. Various mechanisms for maladaptive evolution of mating preferences and sexual dimorphism are discussed.  相似文献

The order in which females encounter, or sample, males in apopulation may have important consequences for mate choice,with the information gathered about males influencing boththe preference function and degree of choosiness of females.Sexual selection may be affected as a result. Sampling of particularsubsets of males may be a crucial component of individual variation in mate preferences within populations. However, the sequencein which males are sampled may also be important in specieswithout traditional, active mate choice, such as when sexualselection involves sexual conflict over mating. This wouldoccur if the likelihood of a female mating with a male of acertain phenotype changes as a result of previous encounters.We examined the effects of encountering males differing inbody size, a sexually selected phenotype, in the seaweed flyCoelopa frigida. Sexual selection occurs in this species asa result of a sexual conflict over mating. We show that theoutcome of the sexual conflict is independent of the orderin which males are encountered by female seaweed flies, withthe overall mating advantage to large males being unaffected.In addition, we explored female preference functions and evaluatethe heterogeneity in female willingness to mate. We suggestthat consideration of mate sampling theory is valuable whenexamining mate choice in species in which sexual selectionis driven by sexual conflict.  相似文献

In this issue, Yeh et al. (2018) investigated whether sexual imprinting could act as an assortative mating mechanism, reducing hybridization and increasing premating isolation. While they indeed find that imprinting leads to assortative mating and reduced hybridization, the strength at which imprinting evolves is usually intermediate, because it is counterbalanced by the costs of imprinting and the benefits of adaptive hybridization. Thus, while sexual imprinting can act as an assortative mating mechanism, it is often not the sole element of female mate choice.  相似文献

Assortative mating is of interest because of its role in speciation and the maintenance of species boundaries. However, we know little about how within‐species assortment is related to interspecific sexual isolation. Most previous studies of assortative mating have focused on a single trait in males and females, rather than utilizing multivariate trait information. Here, we investigate how intraspecific assortative mating relates to sexual isolation in two sympatric and congeneric damselfly species (genus Calopteryx). We connect intraspecific assortment to interspecific sexual isolation by combining field observations, mate preference experiments, and enforced copulation experiments. Using canonical correlation analysis, we demonstrate multivariate intraspecific assortment for body size and body shape. Males of the smaller species mate more frequently with heterospecific females than males of the larger species, which showed less attraction to small heterospecific females. Field experiments suggest that sexual isolation asymmetry is caused by male preferences for large heterospecific females, rather than by mechanical isolation due to interspecific size differences or female preferences for large males. Male preferences for large females and male–male competition for high quality females can therefore counteract sexual isolation. This sexual isolation asymmetry indicates that sexual selection currently opposes a species boundary.  相似文献

Changes in acoustic and substrate-borne sexual signals in phytophagous insects associated with host plant shifts are known to have the potential to promote assortative mating, reproductive isolation and speciation. In this article, we ask whether the switch between pure herbivory and intraguild predation (IGP), which is common amongst phytophagous insects, has similar potential. Male flies in the genus Lipara (Diptera: Chloropidae) search for females by vibrating reed stems and waiting for a reply. By kleptoparasitizing other phytophagous species in the genus (a form of IGP), Lipara rufitarsis can increase its nonsexual fitness considerably. We looked at the impact of IGP on the timing of hatching, body size and attractiveness of male calls in L. rufitarsis . L. rufitarsis males that had engaged in IGP hatched significantly earlier than purely phytophagous flies and were significantly larger, but their calls were less likely to elicit responses from females during playback experiments. We conclude that, although behavioural observations of females provided no evidence of 'like preferring like', changes in phenology associated with IGP are likely to promote assortative mating in this system. The general preference of females for the calls of smaller males is a phenomenon worthy of further study: it may have no adaptive significance, or it may indicate that mating with large males is associated with a fitness cost.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 171–180.  相似文献

Recent research has shown the potential for nonallopatric speciation, but we lack an adequate understanding of the mechanisms of prezygotic barriers and how these evolve in the presence of gene flow. The marine snail Littorina saxatilis has distinct ecotypes in different shore microhabitats. Ecotypes hybridize in contact zones, but gene flow is impeded by assortative mating. Earlier studies have shown that males and females of the same ecotype copulate for longer than mates of different ecotype. Here we report a new mechanism that further contributes to reproductive isolation between ecotypes in the presence of gene flow. This mechanism is linked to the ability of males to track potential partners by following their mucous trail. We show that cliff ecotype males follow the trails of females of the same ecotype for longer than females of the alternate (boulder) ecotype. In addition, cliff males are more likely to follow the mucous trail in the correct direction if the trail is laid by a cliff-female. The capacity to discriminate the ecotype of female mucous trails combined with differential copulation times creates a strong prezygotic reproductive barrier between ecotypes of L. saxatilis that reduces gene flow from cliff to boulder ecotypes by >/=80%.  相似文献

Assortative mating in the wild is commonly estimated by correlating between traits in mating pairs (e.g. the size of males and females). Unfortunately, such an approach may suffer from considerable sampling bias when the distribution of different expressions of a trait in the wild is nonrandom (e.g. when segregation of different size classes of individuals occurs in different microhabitats or areas). Consequently, any observed trait correlation in the wild can be an artefact of pooling heterogeneous samples of mating pairs from different microhabitats or areas rather than true nonrandom matings. This bias in estimating trait correlations as a result of sampling scale is termed the scale‐of‐choice effect (SCE). In the present study, we use two intertidal littorinid species from Hong Kong to show how the SCE can bias size‐assortative mating estimates from mating pairs captured in the wild, empirically demonstrating the influence of this effect on measures of positive assortative mating. This finding cautions that studies overlooking the SCE may have misinterpreted the magnitude and the cause of assortative mating, and we provide a new analytical approach for protecting against this potential bias in future studies.  相似文献

Genetic diversification of offspring represents a bet-hedging strategy that evolved as an adaptation to unpredictable environments. The benefits of sexual reproduction come with severe costs. For example, each offspring only carries half of each parent's genetic makeup through direct descent. The lower the reproductive rate, the more substantial the cost when considering the proportion of genes represented in subsequent generations. Positive assortative mating represents a conservative bet-hedging strategy that offsets some of these costs and preserves coadapted genomes in stable and predictable environments, whereas negative assortative mating serves the inverse function of genetic diversification in unstable and unpredictable environments.  相似文献

This study analysed patterns of mate choice based on different types of laboratory test, and points out the advantages of combined methods to assess mate preference. We compared dyadic encounters and two-way choice tests involving a pair of mice or their urinary signature. Preference was assessed in males and females of the two European subspecies of the house mouse Mus musculus that share a secondary hybrid zone. A preference was deduced from directional choice or behavioural discrimination in favour of a mouse. Our results show discrepancies between the outcomes of the different types of test, which we discuss in terms of the quality of the stimuli involved, and of physical access to the information carried by those stimuli. Despite variation, our results indicate that M. m. domesticus did not show a preference, but could discriminate between stimuli of the two subspecies and tended to direct sexual behaviour assortatively. In contrast, both male and female M. m. musculus showed positive discrimination and preference for potential mates and signals carried by their own subspecies. Additionally, our results confirm that subspecies informative signals are present in mouse urine and suggest that they may be molecules of low volatility, necessitating contact for preference to be displayed.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 461–471.  相似文献

Four models of positive and negative assortative mating systems, exclusive or partial, in relation to phenotypes determined by a pair of autosomal alleles with dominance but with incomplete penetrance of the dominant allele in heterozygous state, are presented. By introducing the parameter of incomplete penetrance in the models of assortative matings, matings between individuals with identical genotypes will occur within the negative systems, as well as matings between individuals with different genotypes within the positive assortative mating systems. Thus, incomplete penetrance has the effect of retarding equilibrium on an assortative mating system, making this equilibrium equivalent to a system with a lower degree of assortative mating, where the penetrance equals 1 or 0. Another conclusion of biological interest drawn from the mathematical analysis presented in this paper is that for any value of the penetrance, the frequency of 0.5 for recessive individuals is also typical of exclusive or partial negative assortative mating systems at equilibrium.  相似文献

Mate choice and mate competition can both influence the evolution of sexual isolation between populations. Assortative mating may arise if traits and preferences diverge in step, and, alternatively, mate competition may counteract mating preferences and decrease assortative mating. Here, we examine potential assortative mating between populations of Drosophila pseudoobscura that have experimentally evolved under either increased (‘polyandry’) or decreased (‘monogamy’) sexual selection intensity for 100 generations. These populations have evolved differences in numerous traits, including a male signal and female preference traits. We use a two males: one female design, allowing both mate choice and competition to influence mating outcomes, to test for assortative mating between our populations. Mating latency shows subtle effects of male and female interactions, with females from the monogamous populations appearing reluctant to mate with males from the polyandrous populations. However, males from the polyandrous populations have a significantly higher probability of mating regardless of the female's population. Our results suggest that if populations differ in the intensity of sexual selection, effects on mate competition may overcome mate choice.  相似文献

Interracial divergence is an important facet of speciation. Thenasuta-albomicans complex ofDrosophila with sixteen morphologically identical, karyotypically different but cross-fertile races is an excellent system to study a few dimensions of raciation.Drosophila nasuta nasuta, Drosophila nasuta albomicans, Cytorace 1, Cytorace 2, Cytorace 3 and Cytorace 4 of this subgroup have been subjected to male-, female- and multiple-choice mating experiments. Out of 8456 crosses conducted, 7185 had successful matings. The overall impression is that mating is far from random amongst these six closely related races of thenasuta-albomicans complex. The males ofD. n. albomicans, Cytorace 1 and Cytorace 4 in male-choice, the females of Cytorace 1 and Cytorace 2 in female-choice, and the males and females ofD. n. nasuta, D. n. albomicans, Cytorace 1 and Cytorace 4 against the males and females of Cytorace 2 in multiple-choice experiments, had significantly more homogamic matings than expected. Thus in this study of evolutionary experimentation on raciation under laboratory conditions, we have documented the initiation of preference for con-specific matings among closely related and independently evolving members of thenasuta-albomicans complex ofDrosophila.  相似文献
