Urine deposited by a rat on a conspecific was quantified with injections of sodium fluorescein, a substance that changes the color of urine. The hypothesis examined in experiment 1 was that marking the environment and a conspecific would be similarly androgen-sensitive behaviors during each of three stages--before castration, after castration, and with restorative therapy with testosterone propionate. Findings were that castration reduced both forms of marking, and testosterone therapy to castrated males restored environmental marking in a dose-response fashion. However, the findings for social marking were more complex; for example, a physiological 200-micrograms testosterone dosage to castrated males was unable to elevate conspecific marking over the rates of marking by castrates without testosterone replacement. In experiment 2 the ontogeny conspecific marking in juvenile males was examined in relation to the pubertal surge of androgens. Results suggested that juvenile male marking of an adult male decreased despite a pubertal increase of androgens. Conclusions were that testicular hormones influenced both forms of marking but were less important in the social setting. Moreover, conspecific marking is not simply an extension of marking the environment.  相似文献

This study examines the effect of chronic administration of the anabolic androgenic steroid nandrolone decanoate (ND) on dominant and subordinate male rats in a pair-housed condition. Pair-housed rats were assessed for dominance status based on their behavior and alterations in body weights. Throughout the study the rats were allowed limited social interactions on a daily basis. At all other times, a Plexiglas divider kept the rats separated, allowing olfactory and visual contact between the cage mates while preventing significant physical contact. One week into the study all subjects were subcutaneously implanted with a pellet that continuously infused either ND (15 mg/kg/day) or placebo for 21 days. Following the pellet implant, behavioral tests including reassessment for dominance status, and a conditioned fear test were conducted over a period of approximately 2 months to investigate possible long-term changes. The main finding is that during the allowed social interactions, the dominant ND-pretreated rats spent more time on highly aggressive behaviors than the dominant placebo-treated rats. In addition, the probability for highly aggressive behaviors was maintained for the ND-treated rats throughout the study, whereas it was decreased for the placebo-treated rats. The ND-treated subordinate rats showed less fear in a potential threatening situation compared to placebo-treated controls. These findings support the relatively long-term behavioral changes that have been seen in humans after abuse of ND and other anabolic androgenic steroid compounds.  相似文献

Several studies have shown female preference for conspecific males with the attached artificial ornaments of more elaborate heterospecifics. However, preference for heterospecifics under natural conditions is relatively rare. We tested what factors affect behavioural mechanisms of species isolation using three species of estrildid finch (genus Uraeginthus) that occur in both sympatry and allopatry. These finches differ in degree of sexual dimorphism; male ornamentation; behavioural and morphological similarity; and phylogenetic distance. Paired mate-choice trials were used in which females were presented with a conspecific and heterospecific male to test which of the above between-species differences best predicted the degree of premating isolation. The three species differed in the degree of species-specific mate preference shown. Females from the brighter two species discriminated against dull males, independently of sympatry-allopatry, similarity and phylogenetic distance. Females from the dull species reacted to conspecific males and brighter heterospecific males equally strongly, independently of similarity and phylogenetic distance. In contrast to previous studies, an equal preference for heterospecific and conspecific males was found under natural conditions. It is suggested that differences between closely related species in male ornamentation affect the likelihood that premating isolation will occur due to the fact that sexual selection tends to drive preferences for exaggerated ornamentation.  相似文献

Testicular regression and decreased serum testosterone levels result when male hamsters are placed in a short-day photoperiod, and these changes are reversed after reexposure to long-days. The present study was undertaken to determine whether these physiological changes lead to modifications in social behavior in the male hamster. Animals in a nonstimulatory short-day (LD 6:18) or a stimulatory long-day (LD 14:10) photoperiod were observed every 3 weeks for 21 weeks. After 9 weeks, half of the LD 6:18 males were returned to LD 14:10 and showed rapid testicular recrudescence. The other half remained in LD 6:18 and showed a slower rate of testicular recrudescence. Assessment of aggression was accomplished by placing an intruder in the home cage of a test animal and recording latency to attack, decisive encounters, number of attacks, and number of aggressive postures. Dominance was evaluated in a neutral arena with opponents of different weights, using the same parameters. Scent-marking was recorded in response to both bedding from an intact male and bedding from an ovariectomized female in a clean cage. Short-day animals undergoing testicular regression showed heightened levels of aggression and an upward shift in their dominance status. Alteration of the photoperiod did not affect the pattern or number of scent marks. As animals underwent testicular recrudescence, there was a return to lower levels of aggression and to a lower dominance status. Males undergoing rapid testicular recrudescence also showed the most rapid decline in aggressive behaviors. These results suggest that levels of agonistic behavior in the male hamster are inversely related to serum testosterone levels. Scent-marking appears to be unreleated to androgen levels in the male hamster and its role in hamster social behavior remains unclear.  相似文献

The influence of progesterone in the brain and on the behavior of females is fairly well understood. However, less is known about the effect of progesterone in the male system. In male rats, receptors for progesterone are present in virtually all vasopressin (AVP) immunoreactive cells in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST) and the medial amygdala (MeA). This colocalization functions to regulate AVP expression, as progesterone and/or progestin receptors (PR)s suppress AVP expression in these same extrahypothalamic regions in the brain. These data suggest that progesterone may influence AVP-dependent behavior. While AVP is implicated in numerous behavioral and physiological functions in rodents, AVP appears essential for social recognition of conspecifics. Therefore, we examined the effects of progesterone on social recognition. We report that progesterone plays an important role in modulating social recognition in the male brain, as progesterone treatment leads to a significant impairment of social recognition in male rats. Moreover, progesterone appears to act on PRs to impair social recognition, as progesterone impairment of social recognition is blocked by a PR antagonist, RU-486. Social recognition is also impaired by a specific progestin agonist, R5020. Interestingly, we show that progesterone does not interfere with either general memory or olfactory processes, suggesting that progesterone seems critically important to social recognition memory. These data provide strong evidence that physiological levels of progesterone can have an important impact on social behavior in male rats.  相似文献

J. Appl.Physiol. 81(5): 1911-1916, 1996.Subcutaneous administrationof aspartic acid results in a long-lasting but reversible depression ofventilation in male but not in female rats. Aspartic acid acts onN-methyl-D-aspartate receptors. The present studytested the hypothesis that a noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate-receptor antagonist,dextromethorphan (Dex), would depress ventilation in female rats andstimulate it in male rats. Moreover, Dex administered prior to asparticacid should prevent the aspartic acid-induced depression of ventilationin male rats. In female rats, Dex caused a 30% depression ofventilation relative to saline at 5 and 10 mg/kg (P < 0.01)but not at the highest dose (20 mg/kg). In male rats, Dex had no effecton ventilation. At a dose of 20 mg/kg, Dex depressed oxygen consumptionto 50% of the saline value at all time points in female rats(P < 0.001) and in male rats 45 and 60 minafter administration. The time points when Dex depressed ventilationand oxygen consumption were different in female rats, suggesting thatthe depression of ventilation was not the result of a depression inoxygen consumption. During a hypercapnic challenge (7%CO2), female rats treated with 5 and 10 mg/kg of Dexexhibited a smaller increase in ventilatory response relative to salinetreatment. At a dose of 20 mg/kg, the hypercapnic responsiveness ofmale rats was markedly stimulated (85.8 ± 8.95 ml/min) relative tosaline (50.6 ± 9.14 ml/min; P < 0.001). Finally, Dexadministered before aspartic acid prevented the aspartic acid-induced depression of ventilation in male rats. Thus, in rats, Dex has gender-specific effects on ventilation and these effects are not associated with changes in oxygen consumption.

Aflatoxins (AFTs), secondary metabolites of the biodeteriogens Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus, include aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), which is hepatocarcinogenic, can cause cellular and tissue damage and because its chemical composition is similar to that of certain steroids, may exhibit some pathological activities similar to those of steroids. The latter can suppress feed consumption by acting upon the central nervous system. Here, is reported the results of an investigation designed to assess whether this biodeteriogen could alter either feed consumption or plasma glucose levels. Male Sprague-Dawley rats maintained for two weeks upon laboratory rat chow were subjected to either intracerebroventricular (ICV) or intravenous (IV) injections of both AFB1 and estradiol. Both non-injected and carrier-injected (0·9% NaCl) animals served as controls. Following fasting for 21 h, the rats were provided with a weighed amount of feed and both feed consumption and plasma glucose levels quantified during the 22nd, 23rd and 24th hour. Both ICV injections of 10 and 100 ng AFB1 and IV injections of 1 and 10 μg AFB1 kg−1 significantly (p < 0·01) suppressed daily feed intake, but did not affect plasma glucose levels. This supports the hypothesis that AFB1 suppresses feed intake probably through action upon the central nervous system. If true, this action as well as the toxic and carcinogenic aspects, further support the need for the prevention and/or removal of the mycotoxin from food and feed.  相似文献

The extent of male mate choosiness is driven by a trade-off between various environmental factors associated with the costs of mate acquisition, quality assessment and opportunity costs. Our knowledge about natural variation in male mate choosiness across different populations of the same species, however, remains limited. In this study, we compared male mate choosiness across 10 natural populations of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus roeselii (Gervais 1835), a species with overall high male mating investments, and evaluated the relative influence of population density and sex ratio (both affecting mate availability) on male mate choosiness. We investigated amplexus establishment after separating mating pairs and presenting focal males with a novel, size-matched female from the same population. Our analysis revealed considerable effects of sex ratio and (to a lesser extent) population density on time until amplexus establishment (choosiness). Male amphipods are able to perceive variable social conditions (e.g., sex ratio) and modify their mating strategy accordingly: We found choosiness to be reduced in increasingly male-biased populations, whereas selectivity increases when sex ratio becomes female biased. With this, our study expands our limited knowledge on natural variations in male mate choosiness and illustrates the importance of sex ratio (i.e., level of competition) for male mating decisions in natural environments. Accounting for variation in sex ratios, therefore, allows envisioning a distinctive variation of choosiness in natural populations and highlights the importance of considering social background information in future behavioral studies.  相似文献

Animal social networks can be extremely complex and are characterized by highly non-random interactions between group members. However, very little is known about the underlying factors affecting interaction preferences, and hence network structure. One possibility is that behavioural differences between individuals, such as how bold or shy they are, can affect the frequency and distribution of their interactions within a network. We tested this using individually marked three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus), and found that bold individuals had fewer overall interactions than shy fish, but tended to distribute their interactions more evenly across all group members. Shy fish, on the other hand, tended to associate preferentially with a small number of other group members, leading to a highly skewed distribution of interactions. This was mediated by the reduced tendency of shy fish to move to a new location within the tank when they were interacting with another individual; bold fish showed no such tendency and were equally likely to move irrespective of whether they were interacting or not. The results show that animal social network structure can be affected by the behavioural composition of group members and have important implications for understanding the spread of information and disease in social groups.  相似文献

For many species, the presence of a significant social partner can lessen the behavioral and physiological responses to stressful stimuli. This study examined whether a single, individually specific, signature vocalization (phee call) could attenuate the physiological stress response that is induced in marmosets by housing them in short-term social isolation. Utilizing a repeated-measures design, adult marmosets (n=10) were temporarily isolated from their long-term pair mate and exposed to three conditions: signature vocalizations from the pair mate, phee calls from an unfamiliar opposite sex individual, or no auditory stimuli. Levels of urinary cortisol were monitored as a physiological indicator of the stress response. Urinary cortisol levels were also monitored, while subjects remained undisturbed in their home cages to provide baseline levels. Temporarily isolated marmosets showed significantly higher levels of urinary cortisol than undisturbed marmosets. However, the nature of the acoustic stimulus experienced during isolation led to differences in the excretion of urinary cortisol. Isolated marmosets exposed to a familiar pair mate's vocalization showed significantly lower levels of urinary cortisol than when exposed to unfamiliar marmoset vocalizations (P <0.04) or to no auditory stimuli (P <0.03). Neither the duration of pairing nor the quality of relationship in the pair (indexed by spatial proximity scores) predicted the magnitude of reduction in cortisol in the familiar vocalization condition. The results presented here provide the first evidence that a single, individually specific communication signal can decrease the magnitude of a physiological stress response in a manner analogous to the physical presence of a social partner, a process we term "vocal buffering."  相似文献

Two experiments were performed to examine aggression and dominance in domestic male and female Rattus norvegicus living in small mixed-sex (3 males and 3 females) groups. Experiment 1 examined the development of aggression in females. A single female (alpha) within each of the six colonies tested showed the preponderance of attacks on male intruders placed into the home-cage when male colony residents were absent. Over 12 weeks of intruder-aggression training female alphas showed only a mild nonsignificant elevation of aggressive behavior. A comparison of aggression of male and female colony alphas tested with opponents of each sex revealed that aggression was mainly directed at like-sex opponents, and that female attack was more defensive in character than male attack regardless of opponent sex. The highest intensity of aggression occurred when male alphas confronted male intruders. Although intruders never showed offense toward male residents, 61% of intruding males showed offense in response to attack by females.Experiment 2 investigated the relationship between aggressive dominance and competitive measures of dominance within each of 10 mixed-sex colonies. Alpha stat s of male and female colony residents did not reliably predict priority of access to food or water in tests of direct resource competition with like-sex colony members. When colony males were simultaneously tested for copulation, the copulatory behavior of alpha males was significantly greater than that of other colony males. Results are discussed in relation to the role of aggression in the reproductive strategy of male and female Rattus norvegicus.  相似文献

In this study ventilation was evaluated in 12-mo-old male and female rats who had received large doses of aspartic acid neonatally. Rats of both sexes treated with aspartic acid were obese, stunted, and exhibited hypogonadism. Although metabolic rates of the aspartic acid-treated rats were not different compared with sex-matched controls, ventilatory patterns were different. Aspartic acid-treated females breathed with a smaller tidal volume (VT), higher frequency (f), and similar minute ventilation (VE) compared with control females. This pattern is commonly observed in many patients who are obese. The aspartic acid-treated females responded to hypercapnic and hypoxic challenges by increasing f more than VT. Tissue pocket gases (PCO2 and PO2) of aspartic acid-treated females were normal. In contrast, aspartic acid-treated males hypoventilated compared with control males. Tissue pocket gas values suggested that aspartic acid-treated males were hypoxemic and hypercapnic. Moreover, the response of aspartic acid-treated males to hypercapnia was parallel to but was less than that of control male rats. The ventilatory response of aspartic acid-treated male rats to hypoxia was blunted. This study has shown that neonatal administration of aspartic acid causes a decreased ventilation and blunted response to hypoxia in adult male but not female rats.  相似文献

Cattle establish strong preferential associations early in their life that determine the cohesiveness within a group and can diminish fear responses (i.e. social buffering). Mixing beef bulls at the beginning of fattening may lead to less cohesiveness. Moreover, mixing beef bulls induces aggressive interactions, especially when the bulls are of similar weights. This study was aimed at evaluating the cohesiveness and fear responses of 64 bulls that were either mixed versus unmixed and of homogeneous vs. heterogeneous body weights (2 × 2 factorial design, four groups of four bulls each per treatment). Social cohesiveness was assessed during food competition and a social separation test. Fear responses were observed during the social separation test and pre-slaughter handling. During food competition, unmixed bulls exchanged more non-agonistic interactions (P < 0.05) and were more tolerant with each other than mixed bulls (time spent eating: P < 0.05). Unmixed bulls displayed less fear responses during physical separation (elimination: P < 0.05; startle: P < 0.01) and were less stressed by pre-slaughter handling (blood cortisol: P < 0.05). Very few effects could be attributed to the homogeneity of weights within groups. It is concluded that mixing bulls at the beginning of fattening reduces the strength of positive social relationships and renders social buffering less effective during subsequent fattening. We recommend maintaining familiar bulls together throughout fattening in order to preserve cohesiveness within groups and for animals to benefit from social buffering during stressful situations.  相似文献

An experiment was performed to determine the effect of diethyl maleate (DEM), and in vivo depletor of glutathione, on the response of male and female rats to arsenic deprivation. A 2×2×2 factorially arranged experiment used groups of six weanling Sprague-Dawley rats. Dietary variables were arsenic at 0 or 0.5 μg/g and DEM at 0 or 0.25%; the third variable was gender. Animals were fed for 10 wk a casein-ground corn based diet that contained amounts of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium similar to the AIN-76 diet. DEM supplementation increased blood arsenic in both male and female rats; female rats had the greatest amount of arsenic in whole blood. Although female rats in general had a lower concentration of glutathione in liver, those fed no supplemental DEM, regardless of their arsenic status, had the lowest amounts. Compared to males, female rats had a lower activity of liver glutathione S-transferase (GST). Arsenic deprivation decreased, and DEM supplementation increased liver GST activity in both male and female rats. Lung GST activity was also increased by DEM supplementation in male, but not female, rats. The most striking finding of the study was that compared to males, females had extremely elevated kidney calcium concentrations, and that the elevation was exacerbated by arsenic deprivation. DEM supplementation also exacerbated the accumulation of calcium in the kidney of the female rats. The response of the rat to both DEM and arsenic was, for many variables, dependent on gender. This gender dependence may be explained by the differences in methionine metabolism between male and female rats. Thus, arsenic deprivation apparently can manifest itself differently depending on gender.  相似文献

In this paper, we tested the hypothesis that exposure to estrogens of different source and estrogenic potency at early puberty could affect the development of socio-sexual behavior in the male rat. Puberty is regarded as a second stage of the ontogenetic period, in the sexual maturation of mammals, particularly sensitive to gonadal hormone milieu. We treated animals orally, from postnatal day 23 to 30, with an environmentally compatible dose of bisphenol A (BPA, 40 microg/kg/day) and with a dosage of ethinylestradiol (EE, 0.4 microg/kg/day) comparable to the human oral contraceptives. Exposure to EE altered the temporal pattern of male sexual activity, reducing performance, in the adult animals; slight modifications, in the same direction, were observed with BPA. Short-term behavioral effects were observed in the treated animals, both with BPA and EE: the exploratory drive, directed to a stimulus object and to the environment, as well as to conspecifics, was reduced in the juveniles. Modifications in the circulating T levels were observed after treatments: T was reduced in the juveniles, both with BPA and EE. The decrement persisted in the adult animals but reached significance only in the BPA group. On the whole, effects of pubertal exposure on behavior are more marked with EE than BPA. This can be due to the much higher estrogenic potency of EE; the direction of the behavioral effects of BPA, compared with EE, is however indicative of an estrogenic mechanism.  相似文献
