Summary Nemesia strumosa pollinators which produced significantly more seeds than other pollinators following incompatible pollinations onto discriminating styles (DS) had pollen-mediated pseudo-self-compatibility (PMPSC). Level of PMPSC was not affected by relatedness between the pollen and style. When a plant expressed PMPSC, either it or its ancestors had intermediate or high pseudo-self-compatibility (PSC) levels, though these conditions did not guarantee PMPSC. Except within families, self PSC level was not related to PMPSC level. Generally, members of the same family showed similar patterns of DS and PMPSC response. When differences occurred, they were related to the level of discriminating sensitivity and self PSC respectively. Incompatible diallel crosses among related and unrelated plants revealed similar patterns of seed set, indicating that the interaction between DS and PMPSC pollinators was of a general nature. Both PMPSC genes and DS genes are PSC genes, though not the same genes. Discriminating styles (DS), pollen-mediated pseudo-self compatibility (PMPSC), and general pseudo-self compatibility (PSC) phenomena were investigated by re-analyzing data from Petunia hybrida where known S genotypes were used. This demonstrated how female coefficient of crossability (FCC)/male coefficient of crossability (MCC) scatter diagrams and regression analyses aid in identifying and quantifying PSC within an self incompatible (SI) population. One of the female testers was identified by statistics to be SI, not DS, in contrast to what was reported in the original report, where all the plants were assumed to have operating DS. In addition, none of the females expressed PMPSC. Based on regression analysis and chi-square tests, a threshold between 27% and 31% PSC was estimated to be necessary for expression of DS. The presence of DS was also required to test for the existence of PMPSC as reported previously. The upper left-hand quadrant of the FCC/MCC scatter diagram which contains all the deviants from the theoretical SI model, is the location expression of DS has been identified. Placement for PMPSC deviants is not possible, due to the interrelationship with DS. Percent PSC did not directly equate with the different types of PSC phenomena but was useful for identifying and ranking DS in female parents. The compatible tester used in this experiment did not always produce the highest outcross seed set with the females as expected. Therefore, due to the confounding effects of the different types of PSC, it is important to choose the compatible testers with care. Regression analyses of FCC/MCC values indicated that S2.2 and S1.2 male testers did not behave in a similar fashion to S1.1 testers. It is hypothesized that this disparity could be the result of the expression of a general PSC gene, different from the DS or PMPSC genes, which is linked to the S2 allele. Since these general PSC effects associated with the S2 allele are minor in comparison to DS and PMPSC, it was necessary to distinguish the difference using statistical analysis.  相似文献

Summary AnS 1.1 self-incompatible (SI) petunia plant which showed atypical seed set was found in an I7 population. This plant showed a strong SI reaction when selfed but produced varying amounts of seed when used as the seed parent in crosses with unrelated individuals homozygous for the sameS allele. Reciprocal crosses yielded no seed indicating that the reaction was a stylar response. Self seed obtained by high temperature treatments produced 18 plants, all of which exhibited the parental characteristics, the ability to reject self pollen but accept, to varying degrees, pollen bearing the sameS allele from unrelated plants. Several petunias homozygous forS 1, and exhibiting various levels of PSC as determined by self seed set, progeny tests and temperature treatments, were used as pollen parents. The mean seed set of these crosses produced a ranking of the pollen parents which reflected the PSC levels obtained by other methods. The behavior of the F1 and F2 populations suggests that the pollen discriminating ability may be a simply inherited, dominant character in these plants. Summary Pseudo-self-compatibility (PSC) in Nemesia strumosa was determined by recessive modifying genes which interferred with the normal stylar incompatibility reaction. The PSC levels ranged from none or low to amounts resembling full self-compatibility. PSC within a progeny could be maintained at low or high levels by selecting parents either high or low in PSC. As competition for the limited water supply available for irrigation of horticultural crops increases, research into crop management practices that enhance drought resistance, plant water-use efficiency and plant growth when water supply is limited has become increasingly essential. This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of potassium (K) nutritional status on the drought resistance of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. cv. Leprechaun (Hibiscus). All the treatments were fertilized with Hoagland's nutrient solution, modified to supply K as K2SO4, at 0 mM K (K0), 2.5 mM K (K2.5), and 10 mM K (K10), under two irrigation regimes (drought stressed [DS] and non-drought stressed [non-DS]). Regular irrigation and fertigation were adopted for 54 days, and drought stress treatment (initiated on day 55) lasted for 21 days; while non-DS control plants continued to receive regular irrigation and fertigation. Following the 21-day drought stress period, plants were labeled with 86Rb+ to determine the percentage of post-drought stress live roots. Both K deficiency (K0) and drought stress reduced shoot growth, but drought stress increased root growth and thus the root:shoot ratio. At K0, plants were K-deficient and had the lowest leaf K, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, B, Mo and Al, and highest Ca concentrations. Although the percentage of live roots was decreased by drought stress, K2.5 and K10 plants (with similar percent live roots) had greater root survival ratio after drought treatment than the K-deficient plants. These observations indicate that adequate K nutrition can improve drought resistance and root longevity in Hibiscus rosa-sinensis.  相似文献

The influence of drought stress (DS) upon whole-plant water content, water relations, photosynthesis, and water-use efficiency of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis cv. Leprechaun (Hibiscus) plants at three levels of potassium (K) nutritional status were determined after a 21-d gradually imposed DS treatment. Compared to K-deficient plants, adequate K supply improved the leaf water content (LWC) and leaf water relations of Hibiscus by decreasing the , and generally sustained rates of net photosynthesis (P N) and transpiration (E), and stomatal conductance (g s), both in DS and non-DS plants. In K-deficient Hibiscus, LWC, turgor potential ( P), and P N, E, and g s as well as instantaneous water-use efficiency, WUE (P N/E) were consistently lower, compared to K-sufficient plants. Carbon isotope discrimination () was lower (i.e. longterm WUE was greatest) in DS than non-DS plants, but K had no effect on during the 21-d drought treatment period under glasshouse conditions. However, the trend in the value of DS plants suggests that could be a useful index of the response of Hibiscus to DS under glasshouse growing conditions. Thus the incorporation of a properly controlled fertilization regime involving sufficient levels of K can improve the acclimation of P N to low leaf, increase P N/E of Hibiscus, and may have potential benefit for other woody plants species.  相似文献

Simple cells in mammalian visual cortex are quasi-linear mechanisms whose behavior departs from true linearity in a very consistent manner. Empirical research on direction selectivity (DS) clearly illustrates these characteristics. A linear DS cell will be DS for all stimuli, whereas a linear non-DS cell will not be DS for any stimuli. However, many simple cells have opposite preferred directions for stimuli of reversed polarity, and some cells are DS for some stimuli (e.g., moving bars) but not for others (e.g., drifting gratings). Also, linear non-DS cells must have separable spatiotemporal receptive fields (RFs), and linear DS cells must have inseparable RFs. Yet many actual DS cells have separable RFs. Here we present a nonlinear model of simple-cell behavior that reproduces all of these empirical behaviors. The model is a variant of the current linear model, amended to include an interleaved nonlinearity (half-wave rectification) that allows it to mimic the (im)balance of push-pull mechanisms. We present simulation results showing that balanced push-pull mechanisms result in linear behavior, while imbalanced push-pull arrangements produce all of the incongruent DS-related behaviors that have been reported for simple cells.  相似文献

Summary A comparative study on the induction of peroxidase isoenzymes, specifically number 10 (P-10) in Nicotiana alata styles revealed significant differences between the various plants of an inbred progeny. In some plants the ageing-induced increase in P-10 activity was very low, whereas in some others, it was relatively high. Pollination accelerated this increase, independent of the pollen genotype. Fertilization was followed by a considerable increase in the activity of several peroxidase isoenzymes, including P-10 in all the plants.Two plants that differed greatly with regard to P-10 induction were used in additional experiments in order to ascertain the mechanism involved in the induction of P-10. The increase in P-10 activity due to pollination or fertilization can partly be explained on the basis of auxin and auxin-induced ethylene activity. The differences in P-10 induction between various plants of the inbred progeny were probably due to differences in their sensitivity to ethylene.  相似文献

Summary A cross between a 0% pseudo-self-compatible (PSC) plant (S3.3) and a 100% PSC plant (S1.1) yielded an F1 population which, when selfed, produced a high mean seed set which was not significantly different than that produced when the F1 was backcross pollinated by the 100% PSC parent. Backcross pollinating the F1 with the 0% PSC parent yielded no seed. No S3.3 plants were recovered in the F2 populations, indicating that pollen tubes containing the S3 allele were inhibited during pollen tube growth of the selfed F1 plants. Apparently stylar-conditioned PSC does not remove all discriminatory power from these petunia styles. Crossing the F1 (S1.3) with an self-incompatible (SI) plant (S2.2) produced plants which were used for computation of a standard linkage test. An approximate map distance of 28 units was found between the S specificity locus and the major gene(s) which influenced its expression. Species with highly restricted ranges are disproportionately at risk of extinction, particularly where habitat loss occurs as a result of mining. Postmining restoration of rare species populations is considered as an appropriate response to counter such threats, but requires a careful, evidence‐based, and information‐driven approach. The economically important diamond mining at Sendelingsdrif in the southern Namib Desert occurs in the highly diverse Succulent Karoo Biome and threatens a significant part of the population of the narrow endemic succulent plant species Juttadinteria albata. To decrease the inherent risks of restoring such a rare species, we studied the habitat features of premining J. albata populations and experimentally tested whether some features could assist future reintroductions in postmining substrates. Plots where J. albata occurred were mostly south‐ to west‐facing and had among others higher rock cover and steeper slopes than plots where J. albata plants were absent. A revegetation experiment, with J. albata cuttings that were established on postmining substrate mounds, revealed that plants on steeper slopes, facing south to west, grew faster than plants on other slopes and aspects. Slope and aspect are therefore important habitat properties to recreate when restoring J. albata populations. These, and other preferred habitat properties such as higher levels of organic C, should now be tested in larger‐scale field trials. Validation of habitat requirements of J. albata through the revegetation experiment has decreased the risks at least partially and provides additional empirical evidence of the importance of establishing reference conditions to enhance ecological restoration.  相似文献

Down’s syndrome (DS) is a developmental disorder associated with intellectual disability (ID). We have previously shown that people with DS engage in very low levels of exercise compared to people with ID not due to DS. Many aspects of the DS phenotype, such as dementia, low activity levels and poor muscle tone, are shared with disorders of mitochondrial origin, and mitochondrial dysfunction has been demonstrated in cultured DS tissue. We undertook a phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-MRS) study in the quadriceps muscle of 14 people with DS and 11 non-DS ID controls to investigate the post-exercise resynthesis kinetics of phosphocreatine (PCr), which relies on mitochondrial respiratory function and yields a measure of muscle mitochondrial function in vivo. We found that the PCr recovery rate constant was significantly decreased in adults with DS compared to non-DS ID controls (1.7±0.1 min−1 vs 2.1±0.1 min−1 respectively) who were matched for physical activity levels, indicating that muscle mitochondrial function in vivo is impaired in DS. This is the first study to investigate mitochondrial function in vivo in DS using 31P-MRS. Our study is consistent with previous in vitro studies, supporting a theory of a global mitochondrial defect in DS.  相似文献

Abstract An assessment of the impact of the soil-borne pathogenic fungus, Phytophthora cinnamomi (Oomycetes, Peronosporales), on the plant communities of the Stirling Range National Park was carried out between December 1988 and April 1989. A total of 541 plant species were collected, with the Proteaceae and the Myrtaceae the two largest families in the study region. Of the 330 species assessed for susceptibility to P. cinnamomi, 118 (36%) were recorded as having at least some individuals in a population judged to have been killed by the fungus and 33 (10%) were highly sensitive to the pathogen (more than 80% of plants in a population killed). Several families had large numbers of susceptible species, while others were apparently unaffected by the pathogen. Notably, 85% of proteaceous species assessed were rated as susceptible to P. cinnamomi. Proteaceous elements had a mean projective foliage cover of 40% in healthy plant communities, but had a mean cover of only 10% at sites that had a long history of infestation with the fungus. In contrast, some species with low levels of susceptibility to the pathogen, such as some monocotyledons, were found to be more abundant at old-infested sites than at healthy sites. Growth form may also influence susceptibility, with herbaceous perennials, annuals and geophytes assessed in this survey apparently unaffected by the fungus whereas 48% of woody perennials surveyed were susceptible. Changes in the floristic structure of plant communities may influence the composition of associated animal communities. In particular, vertebrate flower visitors may be vulnerable since 59% of the species with vertebrate-pollinated flowers were found to be susceptible to the pathogen. This research highlights the serious ecological impact of P. cinnamomi on native plant communities and suggests that significant components of the flora and associated fauna of the southwest of Western Australia are endangered by this virulent pathogen.  相似文献

1. Although several species of Peucetia (Oxyopidae) live strictly in association with plants bearing glandular trichomes worldwide, to date little is known about whether these associations are mutualistic. 2. In this study we manipulated the presence of Peucetia flava on the glandular plant Rhynchanthera dichotoma in the rainy and post‐rain season, to test the strength of its effects on leaf, bud, and flower damage and plant reproductive output. In addition, we ran independent field experiments to examine whether these sticky structures improve spider fidelity to plants. 3. Peucetia suppressed some species of foliar phytophages, but not others. Although spiders have reduced levels of leaf herbivory, this phenomenon was temporally conditional, i.e. occurred only in the post‐rain but not in the rainy season. Floral herbivory was also reduced in the presence of spiders, but these predators did not affect plant fitness components. 4. Plants that had their glandular trichomes removed retained fewer insects than those bearing such structures. Spiders remained longer on plants with glandular trichomes than on plants in which these structures had been removed. Isotopic analyses showed that spiders that fed on live and dead labelled flies adhered to the glandular hairs in similar proportions. 5. Spiders incurred no costs to the plants, but can potentially increase individual plant fitness by reducing damage to reproductive tissues. Temporal conditionality probably occurred because plant productivity exceeded herbivore consumption, thus dampening top‐down effects. Specialisation to live on glandular plants may have favoured scavenging behaviour in Peucetia, possibly an adaptation to periods of food scarcity.  相似文献

Several hand-pollination experiments have shown that pollen tube competition leads to gametophytic selection, and thus affects genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of the next generation. This study is one of the first to quantify natural levels of pollen tube competition. In a population of Epilobium canum, I measured both the amount of pollen deposited on stigmas and the timing of deposition. Approximately 20 tetrads were required for full seed set within fruits. Hummingbirds deposited >20 tetrads at 50–70% of the flowers examined, often in a single load. When pollen arrived in 2 loads, a portion of the ovules within each ovary was probably sired by competing pollen from the second load. Competition may be relatively weak unless at least 30 tetrads compete for ovules. About 20% of the flowers received >30 tetrads in the first load, and 13% acquired > 30 tetrads in 2 loads. The frequency and intensity of pollen tube competition varied among plants. In some styles, 80% of the pollen tubes were excluded from access to ovules, but in others no competition occurred. Further studies of pollination rates and progeny fitness are needed before we can assess the role of pollen tube competition in natural populations. The tumour-inducing T-DNA gene 4 (T-cyt gene) of the nopaline Ti plasmid pTiC58 was cloned and introduced into tobacco cells by leaf disc transformation using Agrobacterium plasmid vectors. Tobacco shoots exposed to elevated cytokinin levels were unable to develop roots and lacked apical dominance. Using exogenously applied phytohormone manipulations we were able to regenerate morphologically normal transgenic tobacco plants which differed in endogenous cytokinin levels from normal untransformed plants. Although T-cyt gene mRNA levels, as revealed by dot-blot hybridization data, in these rooting plants were only about half those in primary transformed shoots the total amount of cytokinins was much lower than in crown gall tissue or cytokinin-type transformed shoots as reported by others. Nevertheless the cytokinin content in T-cyt plants was about 3 times greater than in control tobacco plants.Elevated cytokinin levels have been shown to change the expression of several plant genes, including some nuclear genes encoding chloroplast proteins. Our results show that the mRNA levels of chloroplast rbcL gene increase in cytokinin-type transgenic tobacco plants as compared with untransformed plants. Data obtained suggest that T-cyt transgenic plants are a good model for studying plant gene activity in different parts of the plant under endogenous cytokinin stress.  相似文献

In this article, the effects of drought stress (DS) on gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence and Calvin cycle enzymes in Phaseolus vulgaris are evaluated. Three-week-old plants were exposed to DS by receiving only so much water every evening to ensure 30% field capacity water content overnight. After three days under these conditions, we observed that DS induced a decline of the CO2 assimilation. Gas-exchange data showed that the closure of stomata during DS did not lead to a concomitant decline in calculated intercellular CO2 concentration. Moreover, DS plants showed a reduction of the photochemical Chl fluorescence quenching, photosystem II quantum yield and electron transport rate and a higher pH gradient and more heat dissipation as compared to controls. The activity of Calvin cycle enzymes, Rubisco, sFBPase, and Ru5PK, decreased strongly in DS plants as compared to controls. Data analysis suggest that the decrease of CO2 assimilation under drought conditions is not related to a diminished capacity of the use of NADPH and ATP but probably to the decline of enzyme activity involved in RuBP regeneration (Ru5PK).  相似文献

Down syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability in children, and the number of adults with DS reaching old age is increasing. By the age of 40 years, virtually all people with DS have sufficient neuropathology for a postmortem diagnosis of Alzheimer disease (AD). Trisomy 21 in DS leads to an overexpression of many proteins, of which at least two are involved in oxidative stress and AD: superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) and amyloid precursor protein (APP). In this study, we tested the hypothesis that DS brains with neuropathological hallmarks of AD have more oxidative and nitrosative stress than those with DS but without significant AD pathology, as compared with similarly aged-matched non-DS controls. The frontal cortex was examined in 70 autopsy cases (n = 29 control and n = 41 DS). By ELISA, we quantified soluble and insoluble Aβ40 and Aβ42, as well as oligomers. Oxidative and nitrosative stress levels (protein carbonyls, 4-hydroxy-2-trans-nonenal (HNE)-bound proteins, and 3-nitrotyrosine) were measured by slot-blot. We found that soluble and insoluble amyloid beta peptide (Aβ) and oligomers increase as a function of age in DS frontal cortex. Of the oxidative stress markers, HNE-bound proteins were increased overall in DS. Protein carbonyls were correlated with Aβ40 levels. These results suggest that oxidative damage, but not nitrosative stress, may contribute to the onset and progression of AD pathogenesis in DS. Conceivably, treatment with antioxidants may provide a point of intervention to slow pathological alterations in DS.  相似文献

Monthly samples of about 40 separate plants of each species were collected from 1 to 3 m below lowest astronomical tide on Port Erin breakwater, Isle of Man, Irish Sea. In three species growing on rock, Plocamium cartilagineum, Cryptopleura ramosa and Callophyllis laciniata, about 90% of the plants were fertile in late summer but less than 10% in spring although some fertile plants were always present. Delesseria sanguinea and Odonthalia dentata, also epilithic, had a winter sporing season, Odonthalia extending into late spring, and all plants were sterile in summer. Three species growing epiphytically, Palmaria palmata, Membranoptera alata and Phycodrys rubens, reproduced maximally in the first half of the year at the time when the stipes of the host species, Laminaria hyperborea, grow fastest. Only Palmaria had a sterile season, late summer. The encrusting Cruoria pellita showed little seasonality. The first three species, which reproduce mainly when the sea temperature is above average, are in the northern part of their geographical range. The remaining species (apart from Cruoria) reproduce mainly at low temperatures and are in the southern half of their ranges. Male plants appear to be in a minority in all species, presumably because they were manifest for a shorter period than carposporic plants. They appeared first after sterile periods and were absent as sporing declined. Plocamium and to a lesser extent Cryptopleura show an extremely high preponderance of tetrasporophytes in the population. This is attributed to perennation and some factor disallowing the survival of most of the tetraspores.  相似文献

Summary Diallels and backcrosses among self-incompatible (SI) clones and progeny of Ageratum houstonianum Mill. could be organized into intra-incompatible classes. Four of 5 progenies segregated in expected ratios of S genotypes. Ageratum expressed a one-locus incompatibility system of the sporophytic type with a linear dominance series of multiple alleles and complete allelic dominance in both pollen and stigma. In the second part of the study, a high percentage of self-seed set was observed during the first flowering of a progeny from a pseudo-self compatible (PSC) seed source. Six progenies were derived from the PSC seed source. Five of the 6 segregated PSC SI plants, 4 of which fit a 3 1 ratio of PSC SI plants. All plants of the sixth progeny were SI. Two F1 progenies with the same PSC pollen parent produced significantly different segregations of PSC SI plants. It appeared that PSC acted as a major gene when the most recessive S allele was also present, but PSC was not expressed when the most dominant S allele was present. Clones propagated from PSC plants were SI and cross incompatible with a related S-allele tester.
