The thornback ray, Raja clavata, is an elasmobranch (cartilaginous fish). Since the 1950s, its stock has severely declined. In order to investigate the genetic population structure of the species, we developed microsatellite loci. The five loci reported here have eight to 48 alleles per locus and display an observed heterozygosity ranging from 0.32 to 0.98 with no deviation from the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. In the test panel of 122 individuals from three populations, no null alleles, band‐stuttering, large allele dropouts or linkage disequilibrium was detected.  相似文献

Elasmobranchs are facing global decline, and so there is a pressing need for research into their populations to inform effective conservation and management strategies. Little information exists on the population ecology of skate species around the British Isles, presenting an important knowledge gap that this study aimed to reduce. The population ecology of thornback ray (Raja clavata) around the Shetland Islands, Scotland, was investigated in two habitats: inshore (50–150 m deep) and shallow coastal (20–50 m deep), from 2011 to 2022, and 2017 to 2022, respectively. Using trawl survey data from the annual Shetland Inshore Fish Survey, the size composition of R. clavata catches was compared between shallow and inshore habitats across 157 trawl sets, and 885 individuals, over the years 2017–2022. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) of R. clavata was significantly higher in shallow than that in inshore areas (ANOVA, F = 72.52, df = 1, 5, p < 0.001). Size composition also significantly differed between the two habitats (analysis of similarities, R = 0.96, p = 0.002), with R. clavata being smaller in shallow areas and juveniles (<60 cm) occurring more frequently. Spatial distribution maps confirmed density hotspots of juveniles in shallow habitats, with repeated use of certain locations consistent over time. The results of this study provide the first evidence for R. clavata using shallow areas for potential nurseries in Shetland, which can inform the IUCN's Important Shark and Ray Area process. Furthermore, this study provides important new population ecology information for R. clavata around Shetland, which may have important conservation implications and be valuable for informing species and fisheries stock assessments in this region.  相似文献

Three albino skate specimens (Rajidae) were captured from the North Sea and English Channel between 2008 and 2011. Using DNA barcoding (COI gene) and morphometric analyses, species were identified as a spotted ray Raja montagui, a blonde ray Raja brachyura and a thornback ray Raja clavata. This finding represents the first record of full albinism (a lack of skin and retinal pigmentation) in rajid species.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the basic population‐specific parameters necessary for fish stock assessment in the Gulf of Annaba and to compare these with data from other Mediterranean regions. Black sea bream Spondyliosoma cantharus (Linnaeus, 1758) (N = 501) were collected monthly from January to December 2008 along the Algerian eastern coasts. More than 22 fish were collected each month and ranged in size from 13.4 to 40 cm total length, weighing from 36 to 1080 g eviscerated weight. Biological sampling included weighing and measuring the fish, gonad weighing, sex and maturity stage determination, and age estimation through otolith readings. Validity of the otolith readings for estimating age and growth was supported using the back‐calculation method. Estimated parameters of the von Bertalanffy model are: L = 33.54 cm, W = 633.46 g, = 0.52 year?1 and to = ?0.04 year. The growth performance index (φ) is: 2.76. The length‐weight relationship is: EW = 4.4.10?6 TL3.23. The spawning period occurred from February to May, while the gamete emission peaked in April. Females reached sexual maturity at 19.3 cm (2 years) and males at 21.3 cm (3 years). Sexual inversion occurs at approximately 24.3 cm. Spondyliosoma cantharus was characterized as being a protogynic hermaphrodite.  相似文献

Echinobothrium clavatum n. sp. from the spiral valve of the thornback ray Raja clavata from the Irish Sea is described and illustrated. On the basis of the number of apical hooks it resembles most closely E. musteli but can be distinguished from it by the absence of spines on the rostellum and the different number of spines on the cephalic peduncle. A generic diagnosis together with a key to species of the genus is given. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy of the scolex indicates that the tegument of the rostellum is capable of taking up food by pinocytosis.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of elevated dietary levels of vitamin E (α‐tocopherol) on growth performance, proximate composition and fatty acid profiles of juvenile silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus. Three semi‐purified experimental diets were formulated to contain 49% protein and 16% lipid. High docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) tuna oil was added to the diets to supplement DHA. A graded level of vitamin E (0‐, 50‐, and 100 mg kg?1) was added to experimental diets 1 to 3, respectively. Analyzed vit. E levels were 155.2, 195.3 and 236.4 mg kg?1 in diets 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The experiment was conducted for 12 weeks with juvenile silver pomfret (29.6 ± 7.6 g) using a flow‐through system consisting of nine 1‐m3 tanks. Each treatment had three replicates and fish were stocked at the rate of 20 m?3. Growth performance and feed utilization parameters of fish fed diets 2 and 3 were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than in fish fed diet 1, but the parameters in diets 2 and 3 did not differ significantly (P > 0.05). Although whole body protein levels were not influenced by the dietary vit. E levels, whole body lipid in fish fed diet 2 was significantly higher than in fish fed the other diets. The whole body vit. E levels in fish fed diet 2 (22.6 mg kg?1) and diet 3 (24.1 mg kg?1) were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than in those fed diet 1 (18.2 mg kg?1). Whole body total saturated fatty acids were significantly lower, and DHA levels higher in fish fed diets 2 and 3 than those fed diet 1. The results of the present study suggest that increasing dietary supplementation of vit. E in high lipid diets enhances the growth performance of fish and that a dietary level of 196 mg kg?1 vit. E is suitable for the growth of silver pomfret.  相似文献

A survey‐based assessment of an eastern Mediterranean data‐limited black anglerfish (Lophius budegassa; Spinola, 1807) stock was carried out to elucidate its population and exploitation trends. A catch‐based method was also applied to estimate its maximum sustainable yield (MSY). The effect on the long‐term spawning stock biomass and yield of a wide range of exploitation regimes (combinations of F and selectivity) was investigated using an age‐structured population model parameterised for Mediterranean anglerfish stocks. The analysis indicated an increasing trend of anglerfish fishing mortality (F) in the eastern Mediterranean from the mid‐1990s onwards, and that recent catches were 41% higher than the median MSY estimate. Catching Mediterranean anglerfish at least three years after they mature at an = 0.4–1 year?1 would ensure high yields at sustainable levels of stock depletion. Examination of the empirical exploitation regimes in five anglerfish stocks across the Mediterranean Sea illustrates their unfulfilled potential for higher sustainable yields, mainly due to overexploitation of juveniles.  相似文献

Benthic diatoms are a commonly used food source in shellfish aquaculture. Diatoms of the genus Navicula are the most abundant benthic diatoms occurring year‐round on the coast of Jeju Island, Korea. We isolated an axenic strain of N. incerta Grunow; estimated its growth characteristics under 27 different combinations of temperature, salinity, and nutrients; and determined its biochemical composition and antioxidant activities. The maximum specific growth rate (μmax), defined as the increase in cell density per unit time, was 0.81–1.04 · d?1, and the maximum cell density, 7.99 × 105 cells · mL?1, was reached at 0.88 · d?1 μmax, 20°C, 30 psu salinity, and F/2 nutrient concentration on day 12 of the culture period. The approximate cellular composition was as follows: 7.0 ± 0.04% protein, 1.7 ± 0.28% lipid, 12.8 ± 0.85% carbohydrate, 68.4 ± 0.09% ash, and 10.1 ± 0.44% moisture. The antioxidant properties of N. incerta were determined for various extracts. The rates of 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free‐radical scavenging for Neutrase and methanol extracts were 81.6% and 62.8%, respectively. Flavourzyme extract had a superoxide‐scavenging rate of 57.7%. Kojizyme and Ultraflo extracts had nitric‐oxide‐scavenging rates of 42.2% and 40.6%, respectively, significantly higher than commercial antioxidants, such as α‐tocopherol and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). The metal‐chelating activities of the methanol, Neutrase, and Termamyl extracts were 68.5%, 45.2%, and 41.2%, respectively, four to six times higher than commercial antioxidants. The Termamyl extract showed the highest linoleic acid peroxidation inhibition, exceeding α‐tocopherol and on par with BHT.  相似文献

Investigated were the effects of stocking density on juvenile growth performance, serum biochemistry, fatty acid composition, and mRNA levels of enzymes involved in lipid metabolism in genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT), Oreochromis niloticus. Juvenile fish (n = 900) were distributed into 15 tanks at five initial stocking densities (75, 150, 225, 300, and 375 g/m3 per 800‐L tank, represented as D1–D5, respectively). Temperature was maintained at 28 ± 0.3°C, and water flow rate into the tanks was about 8 L/min. The fish accepted floating pelleted feed (crude protein 28%, crude lipid 6%, and gross energy 149.2 KJ/g diet). The feed amount offered was 4%–8% of body weight. At the end of the 60‐day experiment, the final stocking densities were 1,454.18, 2,010.60, 2,913.13, 3,819.73, and 4,380.80 g/m3, respectively. Growth and body mass coefficient of variation were significantly affected (< .05). No differences in feed conversion rate or survival were found (> .05). Muscle lipid contents decreased with stocking density from D1 to D5. Serum total protein and cholesterol levels were not affected by the stocking density but the D5 group produced the highest serum cortisol and lactate levels and the lowest glucose levels compared to those of the other groups. Lower muscle saturated fatty acid and n?3 polyunsaturated fatty acid contents were observed in the D4 group than in the other groups, whereas the reverse was found in the n?6 polyunsaturated fatty acid content. Hepatic glucose 6‐phosphate dehydrogenase, fatty acid synthetase, hormone‐sensitive triglyceride lipase, and lipoprotein lipase mRNA levels were significantly upregulated in response to a high density. These data suggest that the GIFT adapted to high‐density conditions by altering the composition of muscle fatty acid and stimulating lipid metabolic enzymes. These mechanisms may help fish respond to high stocking density stress in intensive aquaculture systems.  相似文献

In this study, the opportunity to enhance the insecticidal activity of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil was studied for effective management of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum , as a stored product pest beetle. Nanoprecipitation method was used to prepare rosemary oil‐loaded nanocapsules. Bioassays were conducted at 27–30°C temperature and 70–75 % relative humidity in the dark. Fumigant toxicity of the non‐formulated oil and nanocapsules of R. officinalis were investigated at 13.20, 15.92, 19.12, 23.04, and 27.76 μL/L air after 24 and 72 h exposure and the contact toxicity of the non‐formulated oil and nanocapsules were investigated at 4.28, 3.55, 2.95, 2.45 and 2.36 μL/cm2 after 24 h exposure. The major constituents of the essential oil of rosemary were α‐Pinene, 1,8‐cineol, camphor, and cis‐verbenone. Nanocapsules presented an average size (145 ± 15 nm) (± standard error [SE]) with a polydispersity index below 0.3, a negative zeta potential (?11.0 ± 0.5 mV), and a high encapsulation efficiency (78.20 ± 0.93 %). Scanning electron microscope photomicrograph of rosemary oil‐loaded nanocapsules showed the presence of spherical nanocapsules with regular and homogeneous surfaces. In fumigant and contact toxicity, there were significant differences between non‐formulated and rosemary oil‐loaded nanocapsules in all the concentrations and times. The results suggested that nanoencapsulated essential oils from R. officinalis can be used for effective control in T. castaneum . When this technique is used, it can produce pesticides that have controlled‐release properties and reduce the concentration of the applied doses and number of applications.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine tocopherol (Toc), fatty acid and phytosterol content in dry seeds of nine wild taxa of Sicilian Brassica sect. Brassica. Analyses were performed by gas chromatography (GC)‐mass spectroscopy (MS). The biochemical analysis of dry seeds showed that in the nine taxa examined, α‐ and γ‐Toc were the major isomers, δ‐Toc was present in traces and β‐Toc was never found. All taxa had a similar fatty acid composition with C 16:0 (357.2 mg kg?1 DW), C 18:1 (393.94 mg kg?1 DW) and C 22:1 (618.29 mg kg?1 DW) acids present in higher amount. Unsaturated fatty acids (52.5–66.5%) were more abundant than saturated (33.5–47.5%) ones relative to the total fatty acids. Moreover, sitosterol was the most abundant (61.7–69.6%) of all phytosterols in all species and subspecies, followed by brassicasterol and campesterol at 16.0–19.3% and 11.9–20.7%, respectively. Total Toc content and the relative percentage of single isoforms were useful to discriminate seeds of B. incana, B. macrocarpa, B. rupestris group and B. villosa group. On the basis of these results, B. villosa subsp. villosa, B. villosa subsp. bivoniana, B. villosa subsp. drepanensis and B. villosa subsp. tinei can be ascribed to the B. villosa group. These taxa, having the highest T‐Toc, γ‐Toc and phytosterol contents, are potentially the most bioactive ones, and could, therefore, be exploited in breeding programmes to develop genotypes with putative positive effects on human health.

In the present study the fatty acids, cholesterol and vitamin composition in farmed sea bass (8 fish per species per farm; weight range: 389.6–395.8 g, total length range: 297–316 mm) and sea bream (8 fish per species per farm; weight range: 386.8–391.7 g, total length range: 263–268 mm) from three cage farms (?skele in northern Cyprus, Antalya and Mu?la in Turkey) were compared during the harvesting period in June–July 2011. The results showed that the muscles of D. labrax and S. aurata farmed fish were rich in n‐3 fatty acids, but with important differences. For example, the muscles of sea bass farmed in ?skele were rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Palmitic acid (C16:0) was the primary saturated fatty acid, and oleic acid (C18:1 n‐9) the primary monounsaturated fatty acid in the muscle and liver samples of the cage‐farmed sea bass and sea bream. There were no significant differences in the cholesterol content in the muscles of sea bream farmed in ?skele, Antalya or Mu?la. In conclusion, the n‐3/n‐6 ratio in the muscle of farmed S. aurata and Dlabrax is within the recommended limits for a healthy human diet, being very suitable for human nutrition.  相似文献

The tub gurnard Chelidonichthys lucerna has been identified by ICES as a potential commercial species in the northeast Atlantic with recommendations made to monitor landings and discards and to derive information on population biology for stock assessment purposes, however, data are lacking for the species in the northeast Atlantic. Therefore, aims of this study were to provide data on the size/age‐structure and patterns of growth, maturity and mortality of C. lucerna in Northwest Wales, UK, and in doing so to provide data on the biological characteristics of the most northerly population studied to date for comparison with the existing data for southerly Mediterranean populations. Data on the age, growth and maturity of C. lucerna were collected by otter trawling (73 mm cod‐end stretched mesh size) in the coastal waters of Northwest Wales, UK in October (2000–2011, excluding 2006). Total length (TL) of fish sampled ranged between 10.5–41.0 cm (males) and 10.4–57.5 cm (females). The majority of the female fish were between 20–30 cm TL (60.2%) and the majority of the male fish between 20–30 cm TL (58.3%) respectively. TL/weight (W) relations for male and female fish were similar and the combined data was described by W = 0.0067 TL3.10. Age of fish ranged between 1–7 years old for female fish and 1–5 years old for male fish respectively with the majority of female fish 3 years old (40%) and the majority of male fish 3 years old (37%). The age structures of female and male tub gurnards were not significantly different with the older age classes consisting predominantly of female fish. Both males and females exhibited similar asymptotic growth patterns and the combined von Bertalanffy growth function was TLt = 51.6 (1 ? e [?0.25(t + 0.41)]). Instantaneous rates of total mortality were calculated as 1.04 year?1 for males and 1.11 year?1 for females. The size (L50) and age at first maturity (A50) were estimated to be 29.1 cm TL and 2.8 years for males, 27.7 cm TL and 2.7 years for females and 28.0 cm TL and 2.8 years for both sexes combined. The results of this study provide the first information on the biology and population dynamics of C. lucerna in the Irish Sea, the first data collected in the northeast Atlantic since 1985 and the most northerly population studied to date.  相似文献

Specimens of Raja clavata were monthly collected at the coast of Havaalan? (Trabzon/Turkey) from January 2009 to December 2009 at depths between 20 and 40?m. A total of 230 individuals of thornback ray (131 females and 99 males) were collected by bottom trawls during research cruises. Using logistic regression, it was determined that TL at 50% maturity of males was 718?mm TL and of females 746?mm TL. The ovarian fecundity ranged from 27 to 60 yellow follicles in both ovaries. Females carrying egg cases were found in July and October. Variations in the gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices indicated a continuous reproductive cycle during the year.  相似文献

In this study, elasmobranch length–weight relationships were estimated for five species caught between June 1999 and May 2003 from the Cilician Basin shelf waters (Northeastern Mediterranean): Raja clavata, Raja radula, Raja asterias, Dasyatis pastinaca, and Gymnura altavela. The sharpbelly Hemiculter leucisculus, an invasive species, has expanded its range throughout much of Asia and into the Middle East. However, little is known of its adaptive changes regarding life history traits such as age, growth and mortality that could possibly explain its success as an invasive species. A detailed study of the invasive sharpbelly was conducted based on 4539 samples collected from July 2009 to June 2011 in Erhai Lake, China. Standard length ranged from 4.3–19.1 cm for females and 4.6–12.3 cm for males. Length–weight relationships for females and males were significantly different and described as W = 0.0076SL3.2608 and W = 0.0084SL3.1901, respectively. Otoliths are ideal for age determination because of the single annulus formed each year. Based on marginal increment analysis, the total mean CV for age estimate between two readings was 3.55%. The von Bertalanffy growth curves computed by observed length‐at‐age data were expressed as Lt = 25.6 (1 ? e?0.176 (t + 1.347)) for females and Lt = 16.4 (1 ? e?0.354 (t + 0.819)) for males. According to the age, growth and mortality data, there are three possible reasons for H. leucisculus attaining such dominance within a short time in Erhai Lake. First, because of the simple age structure of this species: 97.58% of males were 1–2 years old with a maximum age of only 3 years; 93.14% of females were 1–3 years old, with a maximum age of 6 years. Second, females grew larger than males at any age. Third, instantaneous mortality rates were much higher for males (4.22 year?1) than for females (1.17 year?1).  相似文献

The population parameters of stargazer (Uranoscopus scaber Linnaeus, 1758) were studied regarding age composition, sex ratio, growth, survival and mortality rates, and the exploitation rate in the southeastern Black Sea near the coast of Turkey during the 2011–2012 fishing season. According to ageing analysis of the samples, age group 1 is the most abundant (47.76%), followed by age 2 (41.04%), age 3 (9.33%), age 0 (1.12%) and age 4 (0.75%). Mean totals as well as total lengths and weights for males and females were 14.5 ± 0.22 cm and 12.9 ± 0.19 g, 16.6 ± 0.24 cm and 62.1 ± 2.76 g, and 37.2 ± 1.92 cm and 87.1 ± 3.88 g, respectively. The mean condition factor was K = 0.0167, while the sex ratio was 53.98% female, 38.75% male and 7.27% immature. Length‐weight, age‐length and age‐weight equations were W = 0.014 × L3.059, L(t)=44.5*[1?e?0.148*(t +1.242)] and W(t)=1544.4*[1?e?0.148*(t + 1.242)]3.059, respectively. The computed survival rate (S), instantaneous total mortality rate (Z), annual mortality rate (A), natural mortality rate (M) and fishing mortality rate (F) were S = 28.94%, Z = 1.24 year?1, A = 71.06%, M = 0.26 year?1 and F = 0.98 year?1, respectively. The exploitation rate was 0.79, which is above the optimum exploitation levels.  相似文献

Lipid profiles of three strains (Mexico, Australia, Japan) of Chattonella marina (Subrahmanyan) Hara et Chihara were studied under defined growth (phosphate, light, and growth phase) and harvest (intact and ruptured cells) conditions. Triacylglycerol levels were always <2%, sterols <7%, free fatty acids varied between 2 and 33%, and polar lipids were the most abundant lipid class (>51% of total lipids). The major fatty acids in C. marina were palmitic (16:0), eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:5ω3), octadecatetraenoic (18:4ω3), myristic (14:0), and palmitoleic (16:1ω7c) acids. Higher levels of EPA were found in ruptured cells (21.4–29.4%) compared to intact cells (8.5–25.3%). In general, Japanese N‐118 C. marina was the highest producer of EPA (14.3–29.4%), and Mexican CMCV‐1 the lowest producer (7.9–27.1%). Algal cultures, free fatty acids from C. marina, and the two aldehydes 2E,4E‐decadienal and 2E,4E‐heptadienal (suspected fatty acid‐derived products) were tested against the rainbow trout fish gill cell line RTgill‐W1. The configuration of fatty acids plays an important role in ichthyotoxicity. Free fatty acid fractions, obtained by base saponification of total lipids from C. marina showed a potent toxicity toward gill cells (median lethal concentration, LC50 (at 1 h) of 0.44 μg · mL?1 in light conditions, with a complete loss of viability at >3.2 μg · mL?1). Live cultures of Mexican C. marina were less toxic than Japanese and Australian strains. This difference could be related to differing EPA content, superoxide anion production, and cell fragility. The aldehydes 2E,4E‐decadienal and 2E,4E‐heptadienal also showed high impact on gill cell viability, with LC50 (at 1 h) of 0.34 and 0.36 μg · mL?1, respectively. Superoxide anion production was highest in Australian strain CMPL01, followed by Japanese N‐118 and Mexican CMCV‐1 strains. Ruptured cells showed higher production of superoxide anion compared to intact cells (e.g., 19 vs. 9.5 pmol · cell?1 · hr?1 for CMPL01, respectively). Our results indicate that C. marina is more ichthyotoxic after cell disruption and when switching from dark to light conditions, possibly associated with a higher production of superoxide anion and EPA, which may be quickly oxidized to produce more toxic derivates, such as aldehydes.  相似文献

The diet of Raja clavata (Thornback Ray) was studied in 2008–2009 in S??ac?k Bay in the eastern Mediterranean, based on 187 stomach contents obtained by commercial trawl operations. 40 different prey species were found. Mysidacea, Parapenaeus longirostris and Plesionika sp. were the most abundant prey items. The results indicate that the main prey varies considerably depending on the ecological characteristics of the habitat.  相似文献

Phylogenetic analysis of the north‐east Atlantic and Mediterranean species of the genus Stenosoma (Isopoda, Valvifera, Idoteidae). —Zoologica Scripta, 41, 386–399. The marine isopod genus Stenosoma is widespread in the northern hemisphere. However, 12 of its 14 known species are found within the Mediterranean basin and adjacent regions of the north‐east Atlantic and the Black Sea. Such a high level of diversity confined to a limited region of a much larger circumglobal distribution suggests that the Mediterranean region may have played a crucial role in the evolutionary history of this genus. In the present work, the phylogeny of the genus Stenosoma was investigated on the basis of DNA sequencing data from one nuclear (28SrRNA) and two mitochondrial (COI, ND4) gene fragments obtained for nine of 12 Atlantic–Mediterranean species. Divergence time estimates point to a Tethyan origin of Stenosoma and suggest that the speciation events from which stem most of the extant species took place well before the Messinian Salinity Crisis. Stenosoma spinosum and Stenosoma appendiculatum are the only exceptions, as they apparently arose within the Mediterranean during the Pleistocene. Phylogenetic reconstruction agrees with current taxonomic status of most species. However, Stenosoma capito clustered in two distinct and well‐supported clades, one composed of eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea specimens and the other by western Mediterranean and Atlantic ones. Such polyphyly suggests the existence of a previously unrecognized species, Stenosoma sp., which so far has been confounded with S. capito.  相似文献
