Thidiazuron induces a variety of effects in foliar explants of K. pinnata cultured in vitro. Of these, the induction of an organized hypertrophic growth at the vein ending on the proximal side of leaf disks is a significant morphogenetic effect. This polarized hypertrophy is considered an exclusive auxin-mediated response, as the effect is completely reversed by auxin efflux inhibitor 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid. With the magnitude of hypertrophic growth from individual disks taken as a manifestation of putative auxin levels, the occurrence of a gross, decreasing bioactive auxin gradient from median-basal to peripheral locations across the leaf plane has been observed.  相似文献

While patterns in species diversity have been well studied across large‐scale environmental gradients, little is known about how species’ interaction networks change in response to abiotic and biotic factors across such gradients. Here we studied seed‐dispersal networks on 50 study plots distributed over ten different habitat types on the southern slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, to disentangle the effects of climate, habitat structure, fruit diversity and fruit availability on different measures of interaction diversity. We used direct observations to record the interactions of frugivorous birds and mammals with fleshy‐fruited plants and recorded climatic conditions, habitat structure, fruit diversity and availability. We found that Shannon interaction diversity (H) increased with fruit diversity and availability, whereas interaction evenness (EH) and network specialization (H2) responded differently to changes in fruit availability depending on habitat structure. The direction of the effects of fruit availability on EH and H2 differed between open habitats at the mountain base and structurally complex habitats in the forest belt. Our findings illustrate that interaction networks react differently to changes in environmental conditions in different ecosystems. Hence, our findings demonstrate that future projections of network structure and associated ecosystem functions need to account for habitat differences among ecosystems.  相似文献

Tropical forests harbor diverse ecological communities of plants and animals that are organized in complex interaction networks. The diversity and structure of plant–animal interaction networks may change along elevational gradients and in response to human‐induced habitat fragmentation. While previous studies have analyzed the effects of elevation and forest fragmentation on species interaction networks in isolation, to our knowledge no study has investigated whether the effects of forest fragmentation on species interactions may differ along elevational gradients. In this study, we analyzed main and interaction effects of elevation and forest fragmentation on plant–frugivore interaction networks at plant and bird species level. Over a period spanning two years, we recorded plant–frugivore interactions at three elevations (1000, 2000 and 3000 m a.s.l.) and in two habitat types (continuous and fragmented forest) in tropical montane forests in southern Ecuador. We found a consistent effect of elevation on the structure of plant–frugivore networks. We observed a decrease in the number of effective bird partners of plants and, thus, a decline in the redundancy of bird species with increasing elevation. Furthermore, bird specialization on specific plant partners increased towards high elevations. Fragmentation had a relatively weak effect on the interaction networks for both plant and bird species, but resulted in a significant increase in bird specialization in fragmented forests at high elevations. Our results indicate that forest fragmentation may have stronger effects on plant–frugivore interaction networks at high compared to low elevations because bird species richness declined more steeply towards high elevations than plant species richness. We conclude that conservation efforts should prioritize the maintenance of consumer diversity, for instance by maintaining stretches of continuous forest. This applies in particular to species‐poor communities, such as those at high elevations, as the ecological processes in these communities seem most sensitive towards forest fragmentation.  相似文献

Questions: Which environmental and management factors determine plant species composition in semi‐natural grasslands within a local study area? Are vegetation and explanatory factors scale‐dependent? Location: Semi‐natural grasslands in Lærdal, Sognog Fjordane County, western Norway. Methods: We recorded plant species composition and explanatory variables in six grassland sites using a hierarchically nested sampling design with three levels: plots randomly placed within blocks selected within sites. We evaluated vegetation‐environment relationships at all three levels by means of DCA ordination and split‐plot GLM analyses. Results: The most important complex gradient determining variation in grassland species composition showed a broad‐scale relationship with management. Soil moisture conditions were related to vegetation variation on block scale, whereas element concentrations in the soil were significantly related to variation in species composition on all spatial scales. Our results show that vegetation‐environment relationships are dependent on the scale of observation. We suggest that scale‐related (and therefore methodological) issues may explain the wide range of vegetation‐environment relationships reported in the literature, for semi‐natural grassland in particular but also for other ecosystems. Conclusions: Interpretation of the variation in species composition of semi‐natural grasslands requires consideration of the spatial scales on which important environmental variables vary.  相似文献

This study reports UV screening pigments in the upper cortices of two widespread lichens collected in three sun-exposed locations along a latitudinal gradient from the Arctic lowland to alpine sites of the Central European Alps. Populations from the Alps receive 3–5 times higher UV-B irradiance than their Arctic counterparts from Svalbard because of latitudinal and altitudinal gradients in UV-B irradiance. In Cetraria islandica, the screening capacity of melanin in the upper cortices was assessed by direct measurements of cortical transmittance (250–1,000 nm). A comparison of cortical transmittances in brown sun-exposed and pale shade-adapted forest C. islandica thalli showed that fungal melanins strongly absorb both UV-B and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). For Xanthoria elegans cortical UV-B absorbing pigments, mainly the orange parietin, were extracted and quantified. Field experiments with extracted, parietin-deficient X. elegans thalli cultivated under various filters showed that UV-B was essential for the induction of parietin synthesis. The parietin resynthesis in these parietin-deficient samples increased with decreasing latitude of their location in which they had been sampled, which may imply that the synthesis of pigments is habitat specific. However, no latitudinal gradient in cortical screening capacity was detected for any of the two species investigated in the field. This implies that Arctic populations maintain a high level of screening pigments in spite of low ambient UV-B, and that the studied lichen species presumably may tolerate an increase in UV-B radiation due to the predicted thinning of the ozone layer over polar areas  相似文献

Geographical patterns of morphological variation in small mammals are often associated with environmental factors. The southern red‐backed vole Myodes gapperi is a widespread and abundant small mammal in Canada, occurring in environments as diverse as mixed‐wood forests and taiga. First upper molars and skulls from nine populations of southern red‐backed voles distributed across three ecozones and approximately 10° of latitude were analysed by means of geometric morphometric techniques, and their relationships with environmental variables were examined. A weak, non‐linear trend of size increase towards higher latitudes was observed in voles' skulls. 1997年野外调查资料,对中国东北样带克隆植物沿样带的分布,克隆植物在群落中的重要性以及其与环境因子之间的关系进行了研究,结果表明;克隆植物相对种数(C/Pt)和克隆植物相对重要值(IV)随样带上环境梯度变化呈增加的趋势,群落中克隆植物相对种数与土壤全氮含量负相关,与海拔高度正相关,与年平均温度和年降水相关不显著;克隆植物相对重要值与土壤全氮含量负相关,与海拔高度正相关,与年平均温度和年降水相关不显著,研究还发现,群落中克隆植物种数与非克隆植物种数随样带上海拔高度、年平均温度、年降水梯度变化相关性较差,而克隆植物种数与土壤全氮含量负相关不显著,非克隆植物物种数与土壤全氮含量正相关不显著,根茎型、分蘖型及鳞茎球茎型克隆植物在土壤湿度较差的生境中出现频率较高,而匍匐茎型、根茎鳞茎及根茎球茎型克隆植物在土壤湿度较好的生境中出现频率较高。  相似文献

Combinatorial material synthesis is a powerful approach for creating composite material libraries for the high‐throughput screening of cell–material interactions. Although current combinatorial screening platforms have been tremendously successful in identifying target (termed “hit”) materials from composite material libraries, new material synthesis approaches are needed to further optimize the concentrations and blending ratios of the component materials. Here we employed a microfluidic platform to rapidly synthesize composite materials containing cross‐gradients of gelatin and chitosan for investigating cell–biomaterial interactions. The microfluidic synthesis of the cross‐gradient was optimized experimentally and theoretically to produce quantitatively controllable variations in the concentrations and blending ratios of the two components. The anisotropic chemical compositions of the gelatin/chitosan cross‐gradients were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and X‐ray photoelectron spectrometry. The three‐dimensional (3D) porous gelatin/chitosan cross‐gradient materials were shown to regulate the cellular morphology and proliferation of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in a gradient‐dependent manner. We envision that our microfluidic cross‐gradient platform may accelerate the material development processes involved in a wide range of biomedical applications. Biotechnol. Inter-specific differences in seedling survival responses along a sun-shade gradient and the influence of low-water availability were examined for four Iberian tree species (Quercus robur L., Quercus pyrenaica Willd., Pinus sylvestris L. and Pinus pinaster Ait.) typical of the cool temperate–Mediterranean transition zone. Seedlings were grown under controlled conditions in a factorial experiment with four levels of irradiance (1%, 6%, 20% and 100% of full sunlight) and two levels of water availability. Five censuses (from late spring to autumn) leading to four regular intervals (T0 → TI; TI → TII; TII → TIII; TIII → TIV) were established. Statistical models of seedling survival as a function of irradiance were calibrated throughout the whole experiment (T0 → TIV) and also for each time interval and water availability level. Seedling survival responses among different species diverged both in the type of functional response to irradiance and in their response to water stress. Ranking of species according to shade tolerance (Q. pyrenaica > Q. robur > P. sylvestris > P. pinaster) contrasted with tolerance of high irradiance and conformed to a hypothetical sun-shade trade-off for survival (i.e. species having higher survival in low irradiance—oaks—had poorer survival at high irradiance and vice-versa). Low-water availability also differentially affected each species, with pines being more drought tolerant than oaks. At an intra-specific level, low-water availability decreased survival of Q. pyrenaica under both high and low irradiance. For Q. robur, however, low-water availability exerted a relatively stronger effect under low irradiance. Consequences of the interplay between irradiance and water availability for explaining segregation and coexistence of forest tree species at the ecotone between cool temperate and Mediterranean forests are discussed.  相似文献

Studies on divergence of phenotypic plasticity in closely related species have suggested that character means and plasticity of these characters may evolve independently. Similar patterns of divergence between populations within a species have been reported although few plant species have been studied. Thus, in this paper, the patterns of differentiation between character means and phenotypic plasticity among eight populations of Arabis serrata are documented. Mean response and magnitude and pattern of phenotypic plasticity were measured and compared in plants growing under an environmental gradient of nutrients. Differences in means and coefficients of variation (CV as indicators of plasticity) among populations were compared using the Canberra metric and generating unrooted Wagner trees. Populations showed significant differences in character means in nine morphological traits. Magnitude and patterns of phenotypic plasticity showed a complex pattern of differentiation for each trait and population. Biomass traits were more plastic, in general, than characters associated with linear size. Comparisons between pairs of populations for nine morphological traits showed that in 28.6% of 252 possible cases, populations differed in means, magnitude and patterns of phenotypic plasticity. In almost 90% of the cases, populations differed in magnitude and/or pattern of plasticity. Considering all characters together, populations from similar habitats and with common life history features tended to respond in similar ways. The patterns of divergence, however, suggest that character means and character plasticities among populations are able to evolve independently.  相似文献

Wireless photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices promise easy device fabrication as well as reduced losses. Here, the design and fabrication of a stand‐alone ion exchange material‐embedded, Si membrane‐based, photoelectrochemical cell architecture with micron‐sized pores is shown, to overcome the i) pH gradient formation due to long‐distance ion transport, ii) product crossover, and iii) parasitic light absorption by application of a patterned catalyst. The membrane‐embedded PEC cell with micropores utilizes a triple Si junction cell as the light absorber, and Pt and IrOx as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reactions and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively. The solar‐to‐hydrogen efficiency of 7% at steady‐state operation, as compared to an unpatterned ηPV of 10.8%, is mainly attributed to absorption losses by the incorporation of the micropores and catalyst microdots. The introduction of the Nafion ion exchange material ensures an intrinsically safe PEC cell, by reducing the total gas crossover to <0.1%, while without a cation exchange membrane, a crossover of >6% is observed. Only in a pure electrolyte of 1 m H2SO4, a pH gradient‐free system is observed thus completely avoiding the build‐up of a counteracting potential.  相似文献

Annual plants in semi-arid and arid areas are often closely associated with shrubs. The degree of association largely depends on the balance of negative and positive effects between these contrasting plant life-forms, ranging from interference to facilitation. Since positive interactions are predicted to become less important with increasing rainfall, the interaction balance is expected to shift along aridity gradients. However, this prediction has not been tested on a community level and for different life-history stages across large geographical gradients. Here, we show such changes for annual plant populations and communities in four contrasting sites along a steep climatic gradient, ranging from the arid desert to mesic Mediterranean regions in Israel. Above-ground productivity, richness, seedling density, and seed bank density of the annual plant community, as well as fecundity of annual plant populations, were generally higher under shrubs than in areas between shrubs at the arid end of the gradient, but significantly lower at the humid end. Net effects of shrubs on annuals expressed as relative interaction intensity indicated a steady and consistent shift from net positive or neutral effects in the desert to net negative effects in the mesic part of the gradient. These findings emphasize the usefulness of studies along large-scale gradients encompassing a wide range of environmental conditions for understanding community level interactions among coexisting species.  相似文献

The kinetics of proton-transport coupled ATP synthesis in CF0F1 reconstituted into asolectin liposomes was investigated upon energization of the membrane by an artificially generated ΔpH and Δψ. With a rapid mixing system the rate of ATP synthesis was measured at short reaction times (under 200 ms) where all parameters (ΔpH, Δψ, substrate and product concentrations) remain practically constant at their initial values. The rate of ATP synthesis depends, in a sigmoidal way, on ΔpH, the maximal rate being 200 ATP per CF0F1 per s. At constant ΔpH, an additional diffusion potential increases the rate until the maximal rate is reached.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of common species of macroalgae and fauna on rocky shores extending through the length of the estuary is described. In the west, the shores are fully marine and exposed to Atlantic waves. In an eastward direction, greater shelter and an increasing tidal range occur along a gradient of salinity and turbidity. The flora and fauna change along this gradient. No single biological feature signals a transition from the Bristol Channel to the Severn Estuary but four arbitrary regions are recognized: a 'marine' section eastwards to Swansea, a 'transitional' section between Swansea and Cardiff, an 'estuarine' section up to Newnham, and the tidal river Severn.  相似文献
