Length–weight relationships were estimated for four marine species, namely Pomadasys kaakan (Cuvier, 1829), Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen, 1788), Scomberoides commersonnianus Lacepède, 1801 and Euthynnus affinis (Cantor, 1849) in the Gulf of Oman (Konarak, Iran). During nine cruises, samples were collected at 20‐miles distance from shoreline by 3 panel drift gill‐nets with 120 mm mesh size, 8–9 m height and 0.5 hanging ratio in autumn and winter 2016.  相似文献

Although Arnoglossus laterna (Walbaum, 1792) is a common benthic fish in Portugal, several aspects of its feeding ecology remain incomplete. In this study, diet was examined and the food consumption estimated on inshore waters in the central coast of Portugal. The diet of the scaldfish included mainly mysids, amphipods and polychaetes, while the decapod Philocheras bispinosus Hailstone was the most frequent prey. Variation in the diet according to fish size (two size‐classes), sex and spawning/non‐spawning seasons was examined. Significant differences in diet composition were found between seasons, whereby the most frequently consumed prey in the non‐spawning season were crustaceans, while polychaetes and nemerteneans comprised most of its diet in the spawning season. The average value of the vacuity index was very similar between seasons (24.7% non‐spawning season and 25.0% spawning season). Diet overlap between size‐classes and sexes was high, but low between the two seasons. Food consumption of A. laterna was estimated based on diet characterization and evacuation rate. The estimate of the daily food consumption was 1.15 mg dry weight for the non‐spawning season and 1.67 mg dry weight for the spawning season. Significant differences in consumption rates were found between size‐classes and sexes. Larger individuals showed a higher consumption rate than smaller individuals. Females consumed more food than males in the non‐spawning season, while in the spawning season males consumed more than females.  相似文献

Morphometric relationships, caloric content and biochemical composition of Neomysis mercedis were determined for freshly caught mysids. Strong positive correlations between telson length, carapace length, dry weight, energy content and total length are described by the equations: Ln (Dry weight) = –5.02 + 2.57* Ln (Total Length), Telson Length = 0.13* Total Length, and Energy (Calories) = –37.13 + 4.85* Mean Total Length. Energy (4.92 cal mg–1 AFDFW), ash (8.61% dry weight) and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (10.6% dry weight) content are comparable to values reported for other species. A comparison of the length-weight relationship for N. mercedis with similar equations published previously for other mysid species indicated that the predicted mean dry weight at any particular length varied among species.  相似文献

Current study provides basic information on Length–weight relationship (LWR) and length‐length relationship (LLR) of three fish species of genus Thryssa (Clupeiformes: Engraulidae) i.e., Thryssa purava (Hamilton, 1822), Thryssa polybranchialis Wongratana, 1983 and Thryssa mystax (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) from Chilika Lagoon, India. Samples were collected during the monsoon (July) and post‐monsoon (November) seasons in 2016 and during the pre‐monsoon season (May) in 2017, using screen barrier nets (mesh size 8–18 mm) and gill nets (mesh size 14 and 16 mm). The b values were determined from LWRs as 3.026 for Thryssa purava, 3.326 for Thryssa polybranchialis and 3.081 for Thryssa mystax.  相似文献

Length‐weight relationships were determined for four fish species [Pterois russelii Bennett, 1831, Trichiurus margarites Li, 1992, Muraenesox cinereus (Forsskål, 1775), and Pterygotrigla ryukyuensis Matsubara & Hiyama, 1932]. Samples were collected from the estuary of the Pearl River with commercial trawls (mesh size 2 cm) periodically each season from May 2012 to January 2014. Prior to this study, the length‐weight relationships for these four species were unknown.  相似文献

Abstract Changes in plant abundance within a eucalypt savanna of north‐eastern Australia were studied using a manipulative fire experiment. Three fire regimes were compared between 1997 and 2001: (i) control, savanna burnt in the mid‐dry season (July) 1997 only; (ii) early burnt, savanna burnt in the mid‐dry season 1997 and early dry season (May) 1999; and (iii) late burnt, savanna burnt in the mid‐dry season 1997 and late dry season (October) 1999. Five annual surveys of permanent plots detected stability in the abundance of most species, irrespective of fire regime. However, a significant increase in the abundance of several subshrubs, ephemeral and twining perennial forbs, and grasses occurred in the first year after fire, particularly after late dry season fires. The abundance of these species declined toward prefire levels in the second year after fire. The dominant grass Heteropogon triticeus significantly declined in abundance with fire intervals of 4 years. The density of trees (>2 m tall) significantly increased in the absence of fire for 4 years, because of the growth of saplings; and the basal area of the dominant tree Corymbia clarksoniana significantly increased over the 5‐year study, irrespective of fire regime. Conservation management of these savannas will need to balance the role of regular fires in maintaining the diversity of herbaceous species with the requirement of fire intervals of at least 4‐years for allowing the growth of saplings >2 m in height. Whereas late dry season fires may cause some tree mortality, the use of occasional late fires may help maintain sustainable populations of many grasses and forbs.  相似文献

The Cufada Lagoon, in the southern part of Guinea‐Bissau, West Africa, is a shallow lagoon with a surface area of 190 ha in the rainy season. The vascular flora and physico‐chemical characteristics of the lagoon were studied in December 1997 (end of the wet season) and May 1998 (dry season). The lagoon water is soft, with acid pH, low conductivity and low transparency. The maximum depth is 2.25 m in the rainy season and 1.20 m in the dry season. A total of 46 vascular plant species were recorded, 32 being emergent macrophytes, mostly Gramineae and Cyperaceae, five floating‐leaved, three submerged, one surface‐floating and also five shrubs. Cluster analysis of the floristic data shows two main groups of inventories in both seasons, grouping almost nine‐tenths of the vegetation samples. The inventories in these groups correspond to two main vegetation types and can be spatially arranged. In the deepest inner part of the lagoon, Nymphaea lotus is the most important species, while Oryza longistaminata dominates in the shallower part. In spite of the shallow depth, the middle of the lagoon remains uncolonized by macrophytes. The main factors limiting the colonization by plants of the lagoon seem to be the low mineral and nutrient content of the water and its low transparency.  相似文献

We studied the corn stunt spiroplasma (CSS), Spiroplasma kunkelii (Mycoplasmatales: Spiroplasmataceae) and its vector the corn leafhopper Dalbulus maidis (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) under field conditions in Mexico. We surveyed for the presence of CSS in D. maidis by using PCR on samples of adults collected during the 2000–01 and 2003–04 winter (dry) seasons from irrigated low‐elevation sites and un‐irrigated high‐elevation sites. Also, we determined the body size and number of mature eggs of D. maidis females collected during the dry season in 2004 and in females collected on maize seedlings in the first months (June and July) of the wet (summer) season in 2005. Our PCR results showed that CSS was present in leafhopper adults collected during the 2000–01 and 2003–04 dry seasons in irrigated low‐elevation sites. However, in un‐irrigated high‐elevation sites, CSS was present in corn leafhopper adults caught before, but not during, the dry seasons. In these un‐irrigated high‐elevation sites, adult leafhoppers without CSS were recovered during the first 2 months (November and December) of the dry season from the foliage of wild perennial grasses. Females collected on wild perennial grasses in December 2004 showed similar head width and wing length to females caught on maize seedlings in June 2005. However, females collected on maize seedlings in July 2005 had the widest heads, longest wings and highest number of mature eggs. The largest body size of these females that arrived in July 2005 indicates that they are immigrants and support the Roff’s hypothesis that insect migrants should be larger than nonmigrants.  相似文献

We monitored the birth patterns of sympatric brown howler monkeys (Alouatta fusca clamitans) and northern muriquis (Brachyteles arachnoides hypoxanthus) during a 4‐yr period from October 1996 to August 2000 at the Estação Biológica de Caratinga, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Brown howler monkey births (n = 34) occurred throughout the year, and birth frequencies did not differ between rainy and dry season months. The aseasonal birth patterns of the howler monkeys differed significantly from the dry season concentration and dry month peak in muriqui births (n = 23). We found no effects of infant sex or the number of females on interbirth intervals (IBIs) in our 10 howler monkey study troops. IBIs of brown howler monkeys averaged 21.2 ± 2.5 mo (n = 8, median = 21.0 mo), and were significantly shorter following dry season births than rainy season births. Their IBIs and yearling survivorship (74%) were similar to those reported for other species of howler monkeys, but yearling survivorship was much lower than that of muriquis (94%), whose IBIs were more than 12 mo longer than those of the howler monkeys. Our study extends comparative knowledge of birth patterns in Alouatta to a poorly known species, and provides insights into the different ways in which diet and life history may affect the timing of births in large‐bodied platyrrhines under the same seasonal ecological conditions. The objective of this study was to estimate the potential short‐term economic loss as a result of replacing the commercial diamond codend with a square mesh codend, and to compare fish lengths captured in 40 mm square (S40) vs 44 mm commercial hand‐woven diamond (CD44) mesh codends for red mullet (Mullus barbatus), common pandora (Pagellus erythrinus), bogue (Boops boops), European hake (Merluccius merluccius), axillary seabream (Pagellus acarne), and brushtooth lizardfish (Saurida undosquamis). A total of 20 hauls (10 hauls for S40 and 10 hauls for CD44) were conducted onboard a commercial trawler between 27 February and 11 April 2012 in Mersin Bay in the northeastern Mediterranean. Results showed that the 40 mm square mesh codend caught significantly fewer juveniles of all aforementioned species. However, when changing from the commercial diamond codend to the 40 mm square mesh codend the potential economic loss of revenue was found to be 40% in the study period, which covered the final 6 weeks of the fishing season.  相似文献

Although most polistine wasp species are found in the Neotropical region, mainly in Brazil, only a very limited number of South American parasitoids or parasites are known to exist. We assessed the frequency of a hymenopterous parasitoid, Pachysomoides sp. (Ichneumonidae, Cryptinae), in the nests of the Brazilian independent‐founding wasp Polistes satan and compared the rates of the parasitization of P. satan by Pachysomoides sp. between the dry (winter) and wet (summer) seasons. Pachysomoides sp. larvae were seen to feed on P. satan pupa and were found in both the upper and lower parts of the host pupal cell (ca. 10 individuals in each host pupal cell). Approximately one‐third of the pupal cells in the P. satan colonies were parasitized in the dry season, whereas there were no parasitized pupal cells in the wet season. Consequently, the rates of parasitization by Pachysomoides sp. were significantly greater during the dry season than during the wet season due to unknown reasons.  相似文献

Length‐weight relationships (LWRs) and length‐length relationships (LLRs) for two tropical fish species from Marudu Bay, Sabah were studied. Specimens were caught with the traditional ‘Bagan net’ fishing gear from October 2012 to September 2013, using the light trap method. The maximum total length for Rhabdamia gracilis (7.4 cm) reported in this study is a new record for this species. No information regarding length‐weight relationships was reported previously in FishBase for either Secutor megalolepis or Rhabdamia gracilis.  相似文献

Regeneration and expansion of Aristida beyrichiana and Aristida stricta (wiregrass) populations in remaining fire‐maintained Pinus palustris (longleaf pine) stands of the southeastern United States has become an objective of land managers. Although growing‐season fire is required for successful wiregrass seed production, studies examining naturally occurring wiregrass seedling dynamics are few. This study investigates how seedling survivorship is affected by season of burn, seedling size, time since germination, and proximity to adult plants. Restoration at this research site was begun in 1992 with the planting of containerized longleaf pine and wiregrass seedlings. Study plots were established in November 1997 after a growing‐season prescribed fire (June 1996) that resulted in successful seed production and seedling recruitment. Burn treatment plots included (1) no burn (control), (2) fire in the dormant season of the first year after germination (March 1998), (3) fire in the growing season of the first year after germination (August 1998), and (4) fire in the growing season of the second year after germination (July 1999). Seedling mortality increased with growing season burning and close proximity to planted adults. Natural seedling recruitment continued into the second year after initial seed‐drop in all plots, which verifies that wiregrass seed banking occurs for a minimum of 2 years after seed drop. Where wiregrass management objectives include population expansion, seedling recruits should be allowed 1 to 2 years post‐germination without growing season fire for successful establishment.  相似文献

The stomachs of 464 speckled guitarfish Rhinobatos glaucostigma were sampled from the south‐eastern Gulf of California (GC) to determine diet composition. Numerical indices and prey‐specific index of relative importance (%IPSIR) were used to determine the feeding strategy of the species. An analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) was used to determine differences in diet with respect to sex, season (dry or rainy) and maturity stages (immature or mature). The diversity and niche breadth (by sex, season and maturity) and a general trophic level were determined. The overall diet was dominated by shrimps (%IPSIR = 43·47), amphipods (%IPSIR = 18·89) and crabs (%IPSIR = 18·07). ANOSIM demonstrated differences in the diet by maturity and season, but not by sex. Rainy and dry season diets were dominated by shrimps and amphipods, respectively. Immature specimens fed mainly on amphipods, whereas mature fish preferred shrimps and crabs. Rhinobatos glaucostigma showed a narrow niche breadth with an intermediary trophic level (TL = 3·72) and can be considered as a secondary consumer in the soft‐bottom demersal community of the south‐east GC. Understanding the feeding habits and trophic level of R. glaucostigma is vital to help identify the segments of the population vulnerable to overfishing by artisanal and industrial fisheries, and to aid in conservation and management of this elasmobranch.  相似文献

In the years 2000–2001, specimens of two Ponto‐Caspian gobiids (racer goby Neogobius gymnotrachelus and monkey goby Apollonia fluviatilis) were recorded for the first time in the lower Vistula River, which is a part of the central inland corridor used by Ponto‐Caspian species to migrate in Europe. In 2004, seine net surveys were made in the river course to examine relative abundance of the non‐indigenous gobiids in the local small‐fish community. Altogether 4420 specimens with total lengths ranging from 10 to 340 mm (mostly <100 mm) belonging to 18 species were recorded in 70 hauls. Monkey goby was one of the subdominant species (18.1% of total number of fish captured; 64.3% frequency of occurrence in hauls) together with bleak Alburnus alburnus (21.0, 54.3), roach Rutilus rutilus (18.2, 67.1) and three‐spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculaetus (17.3, 37.1). Racer goby was less abundant but quite common (2.5, 32.9), similar to common bream/white bream Abramis brama/Blicca bjoerkna (6.4, 47.1), Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis (5.7, 57.1), dace Leuciscus leuciscus (4.2, 40.0) and European bitterling Rhodeus sericeus amarus (3.4, 27.1). The study shows that Ponto‐Caspian gobiids dispersed successfully in the lower Vistula, becoming species common to its nearshore zone 3‐ to 4 years after their first appearance.  相似文献

The parameters of length‐weight relationship (LWR) are presented for seven species of catfish from the southeastern Gulf of California. Samples were obtained every three months, in Bahia de Matanchen (using bottom trawl nets consistent of 72 hauls, with mesh sizes of 3.2 cm in the wings and 2.54 cm in the cod‐end) from February to November, 2016 and in the San Blas estuarine system (using gill nets consistent of 32 hauls, with mesh sizes of 5 cm) from August, 2015 to May, 2016 respectively. The allometric coefficient (b) of LWR varied from 2.797 for the Cominate Sea Catfish (Occidentarius platypogon (Günther, 1864)) to 3.373 for the Tete Sea Catfish (Ariopsis gilberti (Jordan & Williams, 1895)). Four species reached new records on maximum total length (Tete Sea Catfish, A. gilberti; Widehead Sea Catfish, A. guatemalensis (Günther, 1864); Conguito Sea Catfish, Cathorops liropus (Bristol, 1897); and Curator Sea Catfish, C. raredonae Marceniuk, Betancur‐R, & Acero, 2009). For six of these species this accounts for the first report on estimations of LWR parameters.  相似文献

1. Manipulative experiments were carried out in four Hong Kong streams (two shaded, two unshaded) to investigate the impact of grazing by an algivorous fish, Pseudogastromyzon myersi, on benthic algal biomass and assemblage composition. Experiments were conducted and repeated during both the dry and wet seasons to determine whether spate‐induced disturbance modified any grazing effect. Treatments comprised fish exclusion and inclusion via closed and open cages, with a no‐cage treatment used as a control for the cage effect. Treatments were maintained for 4 weeks in each experimental run. 2. Grazing by P. myersi reduced benthic algal biomass and the organic matter content of periphyton in open cages and the no‐cage treatment relative to closed cages. The similarity between open‐cage and no‐cage treatments was evidence that the overall difference among treatments was caused by limiting fish access to closed cages and not merely an artifact of caging. Grazing effects were broadly similar in all streams, but there was a significant statistical interaction between treatments and seasons. 3. Analysis of dry‐season data matched the overall trend in inter‐treatment differences, confirming the effects of grazing by P. myersi on algal biomass and periphyton organic matter. Significant differences in algal assemblage composition between closed‐cage and no‐cage treatments during the dry season reflected reductions in the abundance of erect, stalked diatoms (Gomphonema) and filamentous cyanobacteria (Homeothrix). Removal of these vulnerable overstorey algae by P. myersi resulted in greater abundance of understorey diatoms (Achnanthes and Cocconeis) in the no‐cage treatment in all streams during the dry season. The composition of algal assemblages in open cages was intermediate between the other two treatments. 4. Although fish densities were greater in all streams during the wet season, spate‐induced disturbance obscured grazing effects and there were no significant differences among treatments attributable to fish grazing. Seasonal variation in impacts of P. myersi grazing provides support for the harsh‐benign hypothesis, and confirms that biotic factors are less important controls of stream algal biomass and assemblage structure during periods (i.e. the wet season in Hong Kong) when abiotic disturbances are frequent or intense.  相似文献

Fish parasites have been repeatedly reported to be a major threat to the developing industry of finfish mariculture in Indonesia, due to severe parasite and disease outbreaks. The aim of this study was to identify the metazoan parasite fauna and trichodinid ciliates that infect Lates calcarifer in a representative mariculture farm in Indonesia. Examined were 105 L. calcarifer (seabass) for the metazoan parasite fauna and trichodinid ciliates. Thirty‐five specimens each from the net cages of the National Sea Farming Development Centre (Balai Budidaya Laut, BBL) in Lampung Bay, South Sumatra, Indonesia were investigated in three consecutive seasons (two dry and one rainy season from 2002 to 2003). Nineteen parasite species were identified; all fish specimens were infected with two to 10 parasite species, demonstrating a species‐rich parasite fauna. Protozoans (1 species), myxozoans (1), digeneans (3), monogeneans (5), cestodes (3), nematodes (5) and acanthocephalans (1) were found, including 11 new host records in cultured L. calcarifer from Indonesia. Larval and adult parasite stages were isolated, demonstrating that this fish species, although kept inside the net cages, still functions as an intermediate and final host for marine fish parasites. During all seasons, the six detected monoxenous (single host life cycle) parasite species showed a higher prevalence than the 13 heteroxenous (multiple hosts) species. Most abundant were the fish pathogenic monogeneans Pseudorhabdosynochus epinepheli, Pseudorhabdosynochus lantauensis, Benedenia epinepheli and Neobenedenia melleni with a high prevalence. Most heteroxenous parasites (Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda and Acanthocephala) occurred with a low prevalence below 26%, caused by the specific culture conditions. Diversity of the heteroxenous parasites was higher in the dry seasons than in the rainy season. Though some seasonality could be observed for the fish pathogenic monogeneans, severe disease outbreaks of these ectoparasites cannot be excluded in either the dry or rainy season.  相似文献
