Loligo bleekeri has a long spawning season and the size of mature males changes during the season: dimorphic (large/small) early in the spawning season and monomorphic (small) later in the spawning season. To understand how copulatory behaviours relate to the dimorphism, we developed five polymorphic microsatellite loci in L. bleekeri. The level of polymorphism ranged from 10 to 22 alleles with expected heterozygosities ranging from 0.79 to 0.93, suggesting that the novel polymorphic loci should be useful for parentage analysis of L. bleekeri.  相似文献

In this paper we investigated the influence of size differences between opponents on the occurrence of different agonistic attack and response tactics displayed during encounters between Blattella germanica (L.) cockroaches of all developmental stages, competing for a limited food source. The two main results were: 1) attack and response tactics varied during development and 2) size asymmetries between contestants influenced agonistic tactics. Developmental stage of initiator influenced the frequency distribution of the three types of attack patterns (Bite, Kick and Jump) and of the four types of response patterns (Retaliation, Escape, Resettle and No Response). The proportion of kicks increased gradually with developmental stage of the initiator whereas the proportion of bites declined during development. In addition, cockroaches adapted their attack tactics to the developmental stage of their opponent. Similarly the response displayed varied in relation to the developmental stage of the attacked individual, the developmental stage of the initiator and the type of attack displayed. During an interaction, animals appeared to be able to evaluate the relative size of their opponent and to evaluate the consequences of the behavioural pattern they displayed. Larger animals tended to minimize the intensity of the agonistic act they initiated. Escalation in interactions was rare and smaller individuals tended to escape when attacked by larger ones. Wrong estimations of the relative size of opponent, when a smaller animal retaliated after being attacked by a larger animal or when a larger animal fled after being attacked by a smaller one, represented only 6% of the records.  相似文献

The social behaviour of individually identified squids was observed over a period of 4 mo. Squids were reared in captivity and maintained in a shoal of up to 18 animals. Distances between animals averaged 1.6 body lengths, similar to the 1.2 body lengths of wild teleost fish schools. Smaller animals schooled less frequently and were found at the periphery, and familiar and unfamiliar animals shoaled together. Eighty-six apparent reproductive events were observed. This species of squid, Sepioteuthis lessoniana, is not sexually dimorphic to the human eye and male squids copulated with both males and females but they directed their attention disproportionately towards females. Most copulations occurred more than a month before spawning, lasted only a few seconds and, unlike field observations on spawning grounds, were not followed by mate-guarding. Two body patterns are described that were used consistently in social interactions by both males and females; these patterns were both associated with reproductive behaviour but their exact function was unclear. A sister species, Sepioteuthis sepioidea, has been described as showing complex social behaviour; in S. lessoniana, no evidence for such behaviour was seen.  相似文献

Marian, J.E.A.R. and Domaneschi, O. 2012. Unraveling the structure of squids’ spermatophores: a combined approach based on Doryteuthis plei (Blainville, 1823) (Cephalopoda: Loliginidae). —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 93 : 281–307. Male coleoid cephalopods produce elaborate spermatophores, which function autonomously outside the male body during copulation, undergoing a complicated process of evagination. In order to contribute to the understanding of this unique structure, this study investigated the morphology of the spermatophore of Doryteuthis plei applying several microscopy techniques. A hitherto unreported, much more complex structural arrangement was revealed for the loliginid spermatophore, the most striking findings being: (1) the complex, layered structure of the middle membrane, which bears an additional, chemically distinct segment surrounding part of the cement body; (2) the presence of a space between the inner tunic and middle membrane filled with a fine reticulated material; (3) the presence of stellate particles not only embedded in the spiral filament, but also closely applied to the inner membrane at the level of the cement body; (4) the presence of a pre‐oral chamber in the cap region; and (5) the complex organization of the cement body, formed by two distinct layers encompassing contents of different chemical and textural properties. Careful literature reassessment suggests several of these features are common to loliginids, and to some extent to other squids. Their possible functional implications are discussed in light of our knowledge of the spermatophoric reaction mechanics.  相似文献

In Loligo forbesi Steenstrup, the female reproductive system consists of the ovary and accessory reproductive organs which include the oviducal gland, the nidamental gland, the accessory nidamental gland and seminal receptacle. Histological studies were made on the accessory reproductive organs of female L. forbesi. The various changes observed during maturation are described and the functional significance discussed. The secretions produced by the oviducal gland and nidamental gland apparently form the egg coats. The seminal receptacle serves to store spermatozoa after mating. The function of the accessory nidamental gland is unknown.  相似文献

Six microsatellite loci are described for the squid Loligo pealeii. All loci exhibit some degree of allelic diversity. The pattern of inheritance was tested for 3 loci through an analysis of the filial genotypes from a female-male mating. At all 3 loci, the ratios of the filial genotypes conformed to the ratios expected by Mendelian inheritance. The hypervariable loci will be useful in studies on sexual selection in this species, whereas the relatively less variable loci will be useful to address questions of population structure. The digestive organs possibly involved in food absorption in Loligo vulgaris and L. forbesi are the caecum, the intestine, the digestive gland, and the digestive duct appendages. The histology and the fine structure showed that the ciliated organ, the caecal sac, and the intestine are lined with a ciliated epithelium. The ciliary rootlets are particularly well developed in the ciliated organ, apparently in relation to its function of particle collection. Mucous cells are present in the ciliated organ and the intestine. Histologically, the digestive gland appears rather different from that of other cephalopods. However, the fine structure of individual types of squid digestive cell is actually similar to that of comparable organs in other species, and the squid cells undergo the same stages of activity. Digestive cells have a brush border of microvilli, and numerous vacuoles, which sometimes contain “brown bodies.” However, no “boules” (conspicuous protein inclusions of digestive cells in other species) could be identified in their cytoplasm; instead only secretory granules are present. In the digestive duct appendages, numerous membrane infoldings associated with mitochondria are characteristic features of the epithelial cells in all cephalopods. Two unusual features were observed in Loligo: first, the large size of the lipid inclusions in the digestive gland, in the caecal sac, and in the digestive duct appendages; and second, the large number of conspicuous mitochondria with well-developed tubular cristae. When injected into the caecal sac, ferritin molecules can reach the digestive gland and the digestive duct appendages via the digestive ducts, and they are taken up by endocytosis in the digestive cells. Thus, it appears that the digestive gland of Loligo can act as an absorptive organ as it does in other cephalopods.  相似文献

The migration of the screening pigment was investigated in the retina of the intact squid. The action spectrum of pigment migration corresponds to the action spectrum of the visual pigment, rhodopsin, rather than to the absorption spectrum of the screening pigment. The total number of quanta required for a fixed criterion of pigment migration is the same, when the quanta are delivered over any period of time from 6 s to an hour or more. When less than 3–10% of the rhodopsin is isomerized, the screening pigment migrates out to the tips of the receptors with a time-course of 5–15 min, and back again over the same period of time. When rather more than 10% is isomerized, the outward migration takes 5–15 min, but the screening pigment does not migrate inwards, even after several hours in the dark. Indirect evidence suggests that the band of screening pigment, when it reaches the tips of the receptors, is approximately equivalent to a filter of 0.6 log units. The spectral sensitivity of the optic nerve response was measured, and was found to be broader than the absorption spectrum of squid rhodopsin in vitro; the broadness could be explained by self-screening, assuming a density of rhodopsin of 0.6 log units at 500 nm.  相似文献

Abstract: The invertebrate phototransduction system is a valuable model of the ubiquitous inositol lipid signalling system. Taking advantage of the ability to obtain relatively large amounts of retinal material from the cephalopod eye, partial protein sequence data were obtained for a 92-kDa component isolated from a detergent-insensitive cytoskeletal fraction of a squid retinal microvillar membrane preparation. Degenerate oligonucleotides, designed on the basis of these sequence data, were used to isolate a full-length cDNA, encoding the 92-kDa component, using both cDNA library screening and 5'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends (5'-RACE) techniques. Comparison of the amino acid sequence encoded by this cDNA with entries in the OWL composite protein sequence database reveals greatest sequence similarity with the products of the Drosophila trp and trpl genes. Greatest variation from the Drosophila Trp protein is seen in the carboxyl-terminal region, which is considerably truncated in the squid protein and which accounts for most of the substantial difference in molecular weight seen between these proteins. This variation may be significant as the carboxyl-terminal domain has been shown to be in the regulation of several ligand-gated channels. The carboxyl-terminal domain has been expressed and shown to interact with calmodulin in a calcium-dependent fashion, thereby supporting this hypothesis. The likely occurrence of other homologues in a variety of systems suggests that this is a novel and important family of regulated ion channels involved in calcium signalling.  相似文献

Sexually mature female squid Loligo pealei harbour dense bacterial communities in their accessory nidamental glands (ANGs) and in their egg capsules (ECs). This study describes a molecular approach using the 16S rRNA gene (rDNA) to identify bacterial populations within the ANG and the ECs of the North Atlantic squid species L. pealei. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and 16S rDNA analysis showed that predominantly alpha- and, to a lesser extent, gamma-proteobacteria were the predominant components of the ANG and EC bacterial communities. Sequencing results showed the presence of alpha-proteobacterial populations affiliated with the Roseobacter group and additional deep-branching alpha-proteobacterial lineages. In contrast, isolates from the ANG and ECs contained only a few alpha-proteobacteria of the Roseobacter group compared with several gamma-proteobacterial isolates, mostly Shewanella and Pseudoalteromonas species. Most of the ANG-associated bacterial populations were also found within the ECs of L. pealei. The molecular approach allowed the visualization of alpha-proteobacteria as major constituents of a bacterial symbiosis within the reproductive system of the Loliginidae.  相似文献

Observations of 8 groups each containing three adult spiny mice (Acomys cahirinus) revealed that instances of chasing and physical displacement were quite common, while fighting and biting were rarely observed. The relationships between the most frequent behavioral categories were presented in a correlation matrix. In a second, study, ♀♀ tested in their home cages were dominant over ♂♂ In the ♂♂ home cages, however, no differences in the frequency of ♀ vs. ♂ aggression were observed. More instances of aggression were observed in the cages of the ♀♀ than in the cages of the ♂♂.  相似文献

I studied two aspects of interspecific territoriality in a Costa Rican nectarivorous bird, the rufous-tailed hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl). First, I examined variation in the response of the territory holder to four species of intruding hummingbirds by quantifying the proportion of intruders chased from the territory. This measure of territory defense varied significantly among species of intruders and was negatively related to the intruding species’body mass, possibly due to potential costs associated with becoming involved in escalated contests with larger individuals. Second, I tested for an effect of resource manipulation on territory defense. I increased the resource value of the territory by injecting extant natural flowers with artificial sucrose solution. While the frequency of territorial intrusions did not change, the proportion of intruders chased by the territory holder increased. Apparently, nectar supplementation changed the territory holder's perception of resource value but had little impact on the intruders’perception.  相似文献

Polyandry is widespread and influences patterns of sexual selection, with implications for sexual conflict over mating. Assessing sperm precedence patterns is a first step towards understanding sperm competition within a female and elucidating the roles of male- and female-controlled factors. In this study behavioural field data and genetic data were combined to investigate polyandry in the chokka squid Loligo reynaudii. Microsatellite DNA-based paternity analysis revealed multiple paternity to be the norm, with 79% of broods sired by at least two males. Genetic data also determined that the male who was guarding the female at the moment of sampling was a sire in 81% of the families tested, highlighting mate guarding as a successful male tactic with postcopulatory benefits linked to sperm deposition site giving privileged access to extruded egg strings. As females lay multiple eggs in capsules (egg strings) wherein their position is not altered during maturation it is possible to describe the spatial / temporal sequence of fertilisation / sperm precedence There were four different patterns of fertilisation found among the tested egg strings: 1) unique sire; 2) dominant sire, with one or more rare sires; 3) randomly mixed paternity (two or more sires); and 4) a distinct switch in paternity occurring along the egg string. The latter pattern cannot be explained by a random use of stored sperm, and suggests postcopulatory female sperm choice. Collectively the data indicate multiple levels of male- and female-controlled influences on sperm precedence, and highlights squid as interesting models to study the interplay between sexual and natural selection.  相似文献

Pairing termite workers from cultures obtained from same colony of Microcerotermes fuscotibialis Sjostedt did not result in agonistic behavior or mortality of the paired individuals. Termite pairings from different colonies located at different distances resulted in serious encounters and aggressive behavior leading to significant mortality of the individuals. Subtle agonistic behavior was observed when colony mates were reunited after months of separation, but this did not result in any significant mortality. These results confirmed observations of non-overlap of foraging trails of these termites in the field which averts possible encounters and conflict. Therefore these termites are able to recognize their colony mates irrespective of period of separation, a factor for colony affiliation, kinship and recognition.  相似文献

Fighting is often composed of discrete agonistic displays. Few studies have partitioned fighting behavior into its component agonistic displays and evaluated the relationships between the frequency of the displays and the potential benefits of fighting, particularly mating success. In this study, we quantified the frequency of male field cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus, agonistic displays. The displays were quantified under three social environments which varied in the potential benefits of fighting: males with other males only, males with other males and female scents, and males with other males and females. We found that (1) the presence of females elicited an increase in agonistic displays characteristic of intermediate levels of escalation, (2) female scents did not produce a similar increase in the frequency of agonistic displays, and (3) in the presence of females, the frequency of agonistic displays was positively correlated with mating success. Aggressive stridulation, an energetically low-cost display, was more strongly associated with mating success than were more costly displays. The results are discussed in the context of the evolutionary theory of aggression and in the context of cricket mating systems.  相似文献

Courtship displays should be exaggerated enough to attract mates and yet tempered so as not to deter them. We tested this hypothesis in the fighting fish Betta splendens by studying courtship displays and body size and their relationships with male parental quality and female fecundity, as well as the effects of display behavior and body size on mate choice decisions and spawning success. Because of their high degree of parental investment, males are expected to be discriminating in their choice of mates. Males who displayed more frequently built larger nests, a measure of parental quality, but larger males did not. When females were paired with males with high display rates, however, the pair had fewer eggs in their nest, even when accounting for female body mass. In a mate choice test using computer‐generated male stimuli that differed only in display behavior, females showed no preferences for displaying males vs. non‐displaying males, or for males with higher display rates vs. lower display rates. In similar tests in which the computer‐generated males differed only in size, females preferred larger males, but also preferred males that differed with respect to body size (negative assortative mating). Males preferred computer‐generated females that performed courtship displays over non‐displaying females, but showed no preferences for female body size. Neither a female's body size nor her display behavior was a significant predictor of her fecundity as estimated by the number of eggs released during spawning. Thus, our results suggest that female B. splendens must balance male parental quality (nest size) with the risk of potentially disruptive or dangerous behavior during spawning, and that females may minimize these risks through negative size‐assortative mating. Female display behavior, while unrelated to fecundity in our study, may attract males because it indicates reproductive readiness or serves a species‐recognition function.  相似文献

Competition between male fallow deer (Dama dama), during the breeding season was studied to determine if conflict strategies were consistent with the reduction of risk. Agonistic interactions between males were analysed in relation to age, dominance rank and availability of mating opportunities. The breeding season was divided into two main periods: the pre-rut began when all males had cleaned the velvet from their antlers and ended on the last day before matings were first observed, while the rut refers to the period between the first and last matings. Overall, socially mature males (≥4yr old) were involved in more interactions than immature (≤3yr old) males. Males established dominance rank largely by non-contact agonistic interactions during the pre-rut and there was substantial carry-over of rank to the rut, when it was correlated with mating success. The mating success of males was skewed; mature males achieved 99.4% of the matings and immature males accounted for 0.6%. A mature male was 13 times more likely to fight than an immature male; the mature males that fought most often did so between 0.4 and 0.5 times per hour. During the rut, the number of fights was positively correlated across days with the number of matings. The majority of agonistic interactions (79%) comprising dyads of immature males, involved antler contact. In contrast, mature males engaged antlers in only 42% of their interactions. Fights between mature males lasted more than twice as long as those between immature males and were more likely to occur between opponents with similar dominance ranks. However, towards the end of the rut formerly mismatched opponents were more likely to fight. Thus males operated conditional competitive strategies to decide when to interact and fight. The persistence of rank order from the pre-rut period to the rut and the tendency for mature males to resolve disputes without antler contact, served to reduce the frequency of fights and therefore the risk of serious injury.  相似文献
