Soil protozoa are characterized by their ability to produce cysts, which allows them to survive unfavorable conditions (e.g., desiccation) for extended periods. Under favorable conditions, they may rapidly excyst and begin feeding, but even under optimal conditions, a large proportion of the population may be encysted. The factors governing the dynamics of active and encysted cells in the soil are not well understood. Our objective was to determine the dynamics of active and encysted populations of ciliates during the decomposition of freshly added organic material. We monitored, in soil microcosms, the active and total populations of ciliates, their potential prey (bacteria and small protozoa), their potential competitors (amoebae, flagellates, and nematodes), and their potential predators (nematodes). We sampled with short time intervals (2 to 6 days) and generated a data set, suitable for mathematical modeling. Following the addition of fresh organic material, bacterial numbers increased more than 1,400-fold. There was a temporary increase in the number of active ciliates, followed by a rapid decline, although the size of the bacterial prey populations remained high. During this initial burst of ciliate growth, the population of cystic ciliates increased 100-fold. We suggest that internal population regulation is the major factor governing ciliate encystment and that the rate of encystment depends on ciliate density. This model provides a quantitative explanation of ciliatostasis and can explain why protozoan growth in soil is less than that in aquatic systems. Internally governed encystment may be an essential adaptation to an unpredictable environment in which individual protozoa cannot predict when the soil will dry out and will survive desiccation only if they have encysted in time.  相似文献

Low environmental temperature is a major factor affecting the feeding activities, growth rates, and growth efficiencies of metazooplankton, but these features are poorly characterized for most protistan species. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the growth and ingestion rates of cultured herbivorous Antarctic ciliates. Three ciliates fed several algal species individually at 0 °C exhibited uniformly low growth rates (<0.26 day?1), but the algae varied substantially in their ability to support ciliate growth. Specific ingestion rate (prey biomass consumed per unit ciliate biomass per unit time) was strongly affected by ciliate physiological state (starved vs. actively growing). Starved cells ingested many more prey than cells in balanced growth during short-term (minutes-to-hours) experiment but did not grow faster, indicating temperature compensation of ingestion rate but not growth rate. Field experiments were also conducted in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, to characterize the feeding rates of ciliates in natural plankton assemblages. Specific ingestion rates of two dominant ciliates were an order of magnitude lower than rates reported for temperate ciliates, but estimated rates were strongly affected by prey abundance. Our data indicate that short-term ingestion rates of Antarctic ciliates were not constrained by low environmental temperature although overall growth rates were, indicating the need for caution when designing experiments to measure the ingestion rates of these species at low environmental temperature. We present evidence that artifacts arising from estimating ingestion in short-term experiments may lead to errors in estimating feeding impact and growth efficiencies that are particularly large for polar protists.  相似文献

Zooplankton-mediated changes of bacterial community structure   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Enclosure experiments in the mesotrophic Schöhsee in northern Germany were designed to study the impact of metazooplankton on components of the microbial food web (bacteria, flagellates, ciliates). Zooplankton was manipulated in 500-liter epilimnetic mesocosms so that either Daphnia or copepods were dominating, or metazooplankton was virtually absent. The bacterial community responded immediately to changes in zooplankton composition. Biomass, productivity, and especially the morphology of the bacteria changed drastically in the different treatments. Cascading predation effects on the bacterioplankton were transmitted mainly by phagotrophic protozoans which had changed in species composition and biomass. When Daphnia dominated, protozoans were largely suppressed and the original morphological structure of the bacteria (mainly small rods and cocci) remained throughout the experiment. Dominance of copepods or the absence of metazoan predators resulted in a mass appearance of bacterivorous protists (flagellates and ciliates). They promoted a fast decline of bacterial abundance and a shift to the predominance of morphologically inedible forms, mainly long filaments. After 3 days they formed 80–90% of the bacterial biomass. The results indicate that metazooplankton predation on phagotrophic protozoans is a key mechanism for the regulation of bacterioplankton density and community structure.Correspondence to: K. Previous studies have shown that ciliate plankton is generally controlled by food resources (e.g., algae) and predators (e.g., metazooplankton). Among lakes with similar trophic levels but different distributions of phyto- and metazooplankton, the main forces acting on ciliate assemblages may be different. We investigated the relationship between ciliate communities and bottom-up versus top-down variables based on a survey of four subtropical eutrophic lakes (China). Two of the lakes (Chaohu, Taihu) are located on the Mid-lower Yangtze Plain near sea level, and the other two (Dianchi, Xingyunhu) on the Yunnan-Kweichow Plateau at 1700 m above sea level. Blooms of cyanobacteria developed during summer in Lakes Chaohu and Taihu and throughout the year in Lakes Dianchi and Xingyunhu. Ciliate functional feeding groups differed significantly between lakes. The results of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and variation partitioning showed that cyanobacteria significantly influence ciliate species, whereas ‘edible’ algae (cryptophytes, diatoms) and cladocerans were the important variables in explaining the ciliate community structure of Lakes Dianchi and Xingyunhu compared with Lakes Taihu and Chaohu. Our results highlight the importance of consistent cyanobacterial blooms in shaping the ciliate community in subtropical eutrophic shallow lakes by interacting with top-down and bottom-up factors.  相似文献

Ciliated protists are important predators of bacteria in many aquatic habitats, including sediments. Since, many biochemical transformations within the nitrogen cycle are performed by bacteria, ciliates could have an indirect impact on the nitrogen cycle through selective grazing on nitrogen-transforming bacteria. As a case study, we examined ciliate grazing on nitrifying bacteria of the genera Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira. All experiments were designed as in vitro-experiments with cultures of different bacteria and ciliate species. The nitrifying bacteria used in our experiments were Nitrosomonas europaea [Winogradsky 1892] and Nitrospira moscoviensis [Ehrich 2001]. The ciliates comprised of four species that are known as efficient bacterivores and common members of the protist community in aquatic systems: Paramecium aurelia [Müller 1773], Euplotes octocarinatus [Carter 1972], Tetrahymena pyriformis [Ehrenberg 1830] and Cyclidium glaucoma [Müller 1786]. Our experimental approach, using a combination of DAPI and FISH staining, was successful in allowing the observation of ingestion of specific bacteria and their detection within ciliate food vacuoles. However, the ciliates in this study showed no significant selective grazing. No food preferences for a any bacterial taxon or any size class or morphotype were detected. Correlation with time between ciliate abundance and bacterial abundance or biovolume, using log transformed growth rates of ciliates and bacteria, showed no significant results. On the bacterial side, neither an active defence mechanism of the nitrifying bacteria against ciliate grazing, such as changes in morphology, nor competition for resources were observed. These results suggest that in our in vitro-experiments grazing by ciliates has no influence on abundance and growth of nitrifying bacteria and nitrification.  相似文献

The population of the holotrich ciliate Vasicola lutea was studied for two seasons. An experimental reduction of competitors and predators within the metazoan part of the zooplankton resulted in an increase of the Vasicola population and an expansion of its range. The density of the population decreased and Vasicola retired to its original habitat after the recovery of the populations of predators and competitors. The results imply that competition and predation from metazoans may be important factors for the regulation of population size of protozoans in the zooplankton community. Competition and predation may, furthermore, be important selective forces in the evolution of mechanisms for partitioning resources and habitats.  相似文献

1. As grazers on picoplankton and nanoplankton, planktonic ciliates form an important link in pelagic food webs. Ciliate communities may be controlled by predation by metazooplankton. In eutrophic systems, however, where the number of large crustaceans is often low, the mechanisms that regulate ciliate dynamics have rarely been described. 2. We conducted an enclosure experiment with natural and screened (145 μm) summer plankton communities to investigate the effect of the small‐sized crustacean zooplankton on ciliate community structure and the microbial loop in a shallow eutrophic lake. 3. The removal of the larger fraction of crustaceans initiated a decrease in total ciliate abundance. At the community level, we observed a substantial increase in large‐sized predacious ciliates (>100 μm) and a simultaneous decrease in the abundance of smaller ciliates (<20–40 μm) that were mostly bacterivores and bacterio‐herbivores. The compositional shift in the ciliate community, however, did not cascade down to the level of bacteria and edible phytoplankton.  相似文献

In order to assess the factors that determine the dynamics of bacteria with high nucleic acid content in aquatic systems, we (i) conducted 24-h in situ dialysis experiments, involving different fractions of plankton and unfiltered water and (ii) examined empirical relationships between bacteria and both abiotic factors and protists, in boreal humic freshwaters (reservoir and lakes) in the James Bay region (Québec, Canada). Bacteria were subdivided into two subgroups on the basis of their nucleic acid content assessed by flow cytometry. The abundance of bacteria with the highest nucleic acid content and high light scatter (HNA-hs) was significantly correlated, across sites, to bacterial production, whereas bacteria with lower nucleic acid content (LNA) and total bacteria were not. In addition, HNA-hs growth was higher and more variable than LNA growth, indicating that HNA-hs were the most dynamic bacteria. Heterotrophic nanoflagellate and ciliate biomass represented, on average, 5 and 13% of bacterial biomass, respectively. Both in ambient waters and in experiments, ciliates were significantly and negatively correlated with bacteria, whereas heterotrophic nanoflagellates, likely under the grazing pressure from ciliates and metazooplankton, were not. Among ciliates, Cyclidium glaucoma appeared to play an important role. Its growth was significantly and negatively correlated to that of HNA-hs but not to that of LNA. In ambient waters, the abundance of this species explained 56% of the variations in HNA-hs abundance and only 27% of those for LNA. The abundances of total bacteria and LNA significantly increased with chlorophyll a, whereas those of HNA-hs did not. In addition, during the experiments, the estimated potential losses of HNA-hs significantly increased with the initial abundance of C. glaucoma. These results suggest selective removal of the most dynamic bacteria by C. glaucoma and indicate that ciliates may play an important role in the dynamics of active bacteria in natural waters. These findings suggest the existence, within the aquatic microbial food webs, of keystone species that are very important in regulating the activity structure of bacteria.  相似文献

The planktonic ciliate populations of 30 Florida lakes constituting a broad trophic gradient were examined to determine the response of protozoan community structure to increasing eutrophication. Both ciliate abundance and biomass were strongly related to lake trophic state. Comparison of the Florida data base with a comparable north temperate lake group indicated that subtropical lakes generally possess higher ciliate abundance and biomass at a given trophic state than temperate lakes. However the equations derived for each data base were not significantly different. Community diversity and species richness increased with increasing lake productivity. Highly acidic lakes displayed significantly reduced diversity and numbers of species when contrasted with nonacidic oligotrophic lakes. Small-bodied (< 30 um) ciliates dominated all lakes but were proportionally less important in oligotrophic lakes. Presence-absence data produced three assemblages: an ubiquitous association of primarily small ciliate taxa, a group of large ciliates mainly restricted to eutrophic-hypereutrophic lakes, and a very large ciliate,Stentor niger, which dominated the protozoan communities of acidic oligotrophic lakes.  相似文献

Annual changes of rotifers, copepods, cladocerans, the ciliate Epistylis rotans, and larvae of Dreissena polymorpha were analysed for the period 1908–1990. Though food resources increased 6–10 fold in the course of eutrophication, only rotifers and Epistylis increased accordingly. Probably as a result of increased predation pressure crustaceans increased only twice. The seasonal pattern of metazoans and protozoans (flagellates, sarcodines, ciliates) were analysed for 12 and 3 years, resp. During winter and spring, large heterotrophic flagellates and ciliates dominated the zooplankton and were responsible for a pronounced - formerly underestimated - grazing pressure on phytoplankton. In early summer, metazoan filter-feeders were often able to cause a significant reduction of phyto- and protozooplankton. However, during some years, phytoplankton declined in the absence of a pronounced grazing pressure. Field data and experiments revealed that predators were able to regulate the density of cladocerans in early summer (mainly cyclopoids) and summer (mainly Leptodora, smelt and fish juveniles).  相似文献

Freshwater tidal estuaries comprise the most upstream reaches of estuaries and are often characterised by the presence of dense bacterial and algal populations which provide a large food source for bacterivorous and algivorous protists. In 1996, the protistan community in the freshwater tidal reaches of the Schelde estuary was monitored to evaluate whether these high food levels are reflected in a similarly high heterotrophic protistan biomass. Protistan distribution patterns were compared to those of metazoan zooplankton to evaluate the possible role of top-down regulation of protists by metazoans. Apart from the algivorous sarcodine Asterocaelum, which reached high densities in summer, heterotrophic protistan biomass was dominated by ciliates and, second in importance, heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNAN). HNAN abundance was low (annual average 2490 cells ml–1) and did not display large seasonal variation. It is hypothesised that HNAN were top-down controlled by oligotrich ciliates throughout the year and by rotifers in summer. Ciliate abundance was generally relatively high (annual average 65 cells ml–1) and peaked in winter (maximum 450 cells ml–1). The decline of ciliate populations in summer was ascribed to grazing by rotifers, which developed dense populations in that season. In winter, ciliate populations were probably regulated `internally' by carnivorous ciliates (haptorids and Suctoria). Our observations suggest that, in this type of productive ecosystems, the microbial food web is mainly top-down controlled rather than regulated by food availability.  相似文献

A mesocosm experiment in 24 enclosures (6 m3) started at the end of June 1996 in a highly eutrophic shallow lake, Lake Köyliönjärvi (SW Finland). The original factorial design with nutrient, fish and macrophyte treatments was lost due to strong winds causing leakages. However, after the walls were made leak-proof again on July 11, the planktonic communities developed in divergent ways. On July 31 there was a tenfold variation in total crustacean biomass among the enclosures and the lake (40.2–417.5 g C l–1), and chlorophyll a varied from 9.5 to 67.0 g l–1. Here, the single-day data on the 25 planktonic communities is analysed by means of correlation and factor analysis in order to identify factors controlling the protozoans, with particular emphasis on ciliates. The data set comprised: total phosphorus, nitrogen, chlorophyll, bacteria, autotrophic picoplankton, heterotrophic flagellates, abundance and species composition of ciliates, phytoplankton and metazooplankton. The results indicate that although the total ciliate abundance (ranging from 16.2 to 95.0 ind l–1) was controlled by food resources, the observed differences in ciliate community structure could be attributed partly to differential predation by metazooplankton. The effect of Daphnia cucullata, the dominant daphnid cladoceran, was stronger than that of other metazoans.  相似文献

The impacts that predators have on prey behavior, growth, survival, and ultimately the composition of many ecological communities are mediated by prey defenses and the susceptibility of prey to predators. We hypothesized that prey populations inhabiting short-lived, species-poor, aquatic environments should lack significant morphological, developmental, and behavioral responses to predators and are therefore highly susceptible to predation. Furthermore, we predicted that the resultant decrease in prey density and increase in per capita resources due to high susceptibility to predators should enhance overall cohort survival because of enhanced growth of surviving prey. To test these ideas, we performed laboratory and outdoor mesocosm experiments to disentangle multiple effects of predators on an anuran (Scaphiopus couchii); a species highly adapted to breeding in ephemeral habitats and that has one of the shortest larval periods of all anurans. Chemical (presence of predator) and lethal predator cues (predator plus consumed conspecific) elicited no response in behavior, development, or morphology, indicating a lack of defensive mechanisms. Survivorship was significantly reduced in treatments where tadpoles were exposed to predators. However, this reduction in prey density led to accelerated time to metamorphosis, conferring an advantage to survivors who must metamorphose before ephemeral ponds dry. Our experiments demonstrated that in short-lived environments, prey may exhibit little or no response to the presence of predators presumably because selection for anti-predator defenses is countered by selection for rapid metamorphosis. However, predation actually resulted in an increase in overall cohort survival. Although predators are relatively rare in highly ephemeral aquatic environments, they may play an important role in facilitating the long-term persistence of their prey by reducing prey density.  相似文献

Ciliates are important consumers of pico- and nano-sized producers, are nutrient regenerators, and are an important food source for metazoans. To date, ecological research on ciliates has focused on marine ecosystems rather than on glacier habitats. This paper presents the first major study on ciliates from the Ecology Glacier (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica). The objective of the study was to investigate the structure and spatial distribution of ciliate communities and to identify the environmental factors determining the structure of the assemblages. Microbial communities were collected from three habitats: surface snow, cryoconite holes, and glacier streams. Sampling was carried out every 3–4 days from January 17 to February 24, 2012. A total of 18 ciliate taxa were identified. The species richness, abundance, and biomass of protozoa differed significantly between the stations studied with the lowest numbers in streams on the glacier surface and the highest numbers in cryoconite holes. The RDA performed to specify the direct relationships between the abundance of ciliate taxa and environmental variables showed obvious differences between studied habitats. The analysis showed that all variables together explained 62.4 % of total variance. However, variables that significantly explained the variance in ciliate communities in cryoconite holes, snow, and surface streams were temperature, conductivity, and total nitrogen. Further research is required to explain the impact of biotic factors influencing the presence of ciliates, including the abundance of bacteria, microalgae, and small Metazoa.  相似文献

Ciliophora is a phylum that is comprised of extremely diverse microorganisms with regard to their morphology and ecology. They may be found in various environments, as free-living organisms or associated with metazoans. Such associations range from relationships with low metabolic dependence such as epibiosis, to more intimate relationships such as mutualism and parasitism. We know that symbiotic relationships occur along the whole phylogeny of the group, however, little is known about their evolution. Theoretical studies show that there are two routes for the development of parasitism, yet few authors have investigated the evolution of these characteristics using molecular tools. In the present study, we inferred a wide dated molecular phylogeny, based on the 18S rDNA gene, for the entire Ciliophora phylum, mapped life habits throughout the evolutionary time, and evaluated whether symbiotic relationships were linked to the variation in diversification rates and to the mode of evolution of ciliates. Our results showed that the last common ancestor for Ciliophora was likely a free-living organism, and that parasitism is a recent adaptation in ciliates, emerging more than once and independently via two distinct routes: (i) a free-living ciliate evolved into a mutualistic organism and, later, into a parasitic organism, and (ii) a free-living ciliate evolved directly into a parasitic organism. Furthermore, we have found a significant increase in the diversification rate of parasitic and mutualistic ciliates compared with their free-living conspecifics. The evolutionary success in different lineages of symbiont ciliates may be associated with many factors including type and colonization placement on their host, as well as physical and physiological conditions made available by the hosts.  相似文献

1. Protozoans are important consumers within microbial food webs and, in turn, they represent potential prey for small metazoans. However, feeding interactions within these food webs are rarely characterised and this is especially true for freshwater sediments. 2. We aimed to quantify the feeding links between a freshwater meiofaunal copepod and ciliates in two laboratory experiments. The first experiment addressed the response of Eucyclops serrulatus towards ciliate density and type (two ciliate species of the same genus differing in terms of body size). A second experiment assessed the effect of habitat structure on feeding rates by introducing different structural complexity into the feeding arena. In contrast to the first experiment, which was run only for one time period, this experiment also tested three different total feeding times (4, 7 and 9 h). 3. Eucyclops serrulatus exhibited high ingestion rates, with 3–69 ciliates copepod?1 h?1 consumed depending on food concentration, food type and habitat complexity. Copepods exhibited a preference for the smaller ciliate when total ciliate concentration was low, but selected both ciliates equally when food concentrations were medium or high. However, at very high food concentration, Eucyclops preferred the larger ciliate (which was 1/3 of its own body size), suggesting that the longer handling times of the larger prey are rewarding when the large prey is present in high numbers. In terms of total numbers consumed, copepods fed on more small ciliates, but in terms of carbon units both ciliates were selected equally when total prey concentration was low or medium. However, copepods derived more carbon from the larger prey at high and very high prey concentrations (up to 0.7 μgC out of a maximum of 1.1 μgC copepod?1 h?1). Habitat complexity influenced the feeding of copepods when it was observed over time. 4. The copepod–ciliate link is well known from the pelagic zone of both marine and freshwater habitats. We have shown its potential importance within the benthos, where it can be influenced by food identity, food quantity and possibly by habitat complexity.  相似文献

Ciliates, although single-celled organisms, contain numerous subcellular structures and pathways usually associated with metazoans. How this cell biological complexity relates to the evolution of molecular elements is unclear, because features in these cells have been defined mainly at the morphological level. Among these ciliate features are structures resembling clathrin-coated, endocytic pits associated with plasma membrane invaginations called parasomal sacs. The combination of genome-wide sequencing in Tetrahymena thermophila with tools for gene expression and replacement has allowed us to examine this pathway in detail. Here we demonstrate that parasomal sacs are sites of clathrin-dependent endocytosis and that AP-2 localizes to these sites. Unexpectedly, endocytosis in Tetrahymena also involves a protein in the dynamin family, Drp1p (Dynamin-related protein 1). While phylogenetic analysis of AP subunits indicates a primitive origin for clathrin-mediated endocytosis, similar analysis of dynamin-related proteins suggests, strikingly, that the recruitment of dynamin-family proteins to the endocytic pathway occurred independently during the course of the ciliate and metazoan radiations. Consistent with this, our functional analysis suggests that the precise roles of dynamins in endocytosis, as well as the mechanisms of targeting, differ in metazoans and ciliates.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that photo-oxidative stress is greater in symbiotic representatives of the freshwater ciliate Paramecium bursaria than in aposymbiotic (i.e., without Chlorella) ones. The level of oxidative stress was determined by assessing reactive oxygen species (ROS) with two fluorescent probes (hydroethidine and dihydrorhodamine123) by flow cytometry in exponential and stationary growth phases of both strains. Photo-oxidative stress was assessed in the laboratory after exposure of the ciliates to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR: 400-700 nm) and PAR+ultraviolet radiation (UVR: 280-400 nm). Additionally, both strains were screened for their antioxidant defenses by measuring the activity of the enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione reductase. The results showed that aposymbiotic ciliates had higher levels of PAR-induced oxidative stress than symbiotic ones. Significant differences in PAR-induced oxidative stress were also found in both strains when comparing exponential and stationary growth phases with generally higher values in the former. After exposure to UVR, aposymbiotic ciliates in the stationary phase had the highest levels of ROS despite an increase in SOD activity. By contrast, exposure to UVR decreased catalase activity in both strains. Overall, our results suggest that in this ciliate symbiosis, the presence of symbionts minimizes photo-oxidative stress. This work represents the first assessment of photo-oxidative stress in an algal-ciliate mutualistic symbiosis.  相似文献
