As animal personality research becomes more central to the study of animal behavior, there is increasing need for theoretical frameworks addressing its causes and consequences. We propose that regulatory focus theory (RFT) could serve as one such framework while also providing insights into how animal personality relates to welfare. RFT distinguishes between two types of approach motivation: promotion, the motivation to approach gains, and prevention, the motivation to approach or maintain safety. Decades of research have established the utility of RFT as a model of human behavior and recent evidence from zoo-housed primates and laboratory rats has suggested that it may be applicable to nonhuman animal behavior as well. Building on these initial studies, we collected data on 60 rats, Rattus norvegicus, navigating an automated maze that allowed individuals to maintain darkness (indicative of prevention/safety-approach motivation) and/or activate food rewards (indicative of promotion/gain-approach motivation). As predicted, both behaviors showed stable individual differences (Ps <0.01) and were inversely associated with physiological signs of chronic stress, possibly indicating poor welfare (Ps <0.05). Subsequently, half the rats were exposed to a manageable threat (noxious novel object) in the homecage. Re-testing in the maze revealed that threat exposure increased darkness time achieved (P<0.05), suggesting a mechanism by which prevention motivation may be enhanced. These results point toward the potential utility of RFT as a model for animal behavior and welfare.  相似文献

To assess how tooth microstructure and composition might facilitate the pharyngeal mill mechanism of halfbeaks, apatite structure and iron content were determined by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X‐ray analysis for Hyporhamphus regularis ardelio, Arrhamphus sclerolepis krefftii, and Hemiramphus robustus. Iron was present in developing teeth and was concentrated along the shearing edge of spatulate incisiform teeth, which dominate the occlusive wear zone in all three species. A model based on tooth structure and wear rate is proposed to explain how halfbeaks maintain a fully functional occlusion zone throughout growth and consequent tooth addition and replacement. Replacement teeth erupt and wear rapidly so that a constant occlusion plane is always present. Iron within the tooth tissue reduces the wear rate of the cutting edge while simultaneously maintaining its sharpness and efficiency. J. Morphol. 2009. © 2008 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Following a radiological or nuclear emergency event, there is a need for quick and reliable dose estimations of potentially exposed people. In situations where dosimeters are not readily available, the dose estimations must be carried out using alternative methods. In the present study, the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) properties of tooth enamel and different dental repair materials have been examined. Specimens of the materials were exposed to gamma and beta radiation in different types of liquid environments to mimic the actual irradiation situation in the mouth. Measurements were taken using a Ris? TL/OSL reader, and irradiations were made using a 90Sr/90Y source and a linear accelerator (6 MV photons). Results show that the OSL signal from tooth enamel decreases substantially when the enamel is kept in a wet environment. Thus, tooth enamel is not reliable for retrospective dose assessment without further studies of the phenomenon. Dental repair materials, on the other hand, do not exhibit the same effect when exposed to liquids. In addition, dose–response and fading measurements of the dental repair materials show promising results, making these materials highly interesting for retrospective dosimetry. The minimum detectable dose for the dental repair materials has been estimated to be 20–185?mGy.  相似文献

A hierarchical approach to restoration planning at the regional, catchment and local scales is proposed and examined. Restoration projects limited to a local scale and focused on habitat improvement for individual species ended in failure, which has led to the recognition that there is a need for ecosystem-based management at the landscape level. The first landscape-level restoration in Japan is under way in the Kushiro and Shibetsu River Basins, in northern Japan. However, public consensus on these large-scale restoration projects has not yet matured and there are very few projects that have progressed even as far as mapping to classify intact and disturbed ecosystems. Classification of habitat quality using physical and biological indicators appears to be the core element of analysis of ecological degradation at the regional scale (100–1,000 km2). This mass-screening process is critical to identify areas in potential need of restoration. The causes and mechanisms of ecosystem degradation are then examined at the catchment scale (10–100 km2) by linking material flows and habitat conditions. Direct environmental gradient analysis is useful to determine cause and effect relationships between species and habitat quality. Finally, we recommend implementation of field experiments with a clear hypothesis at the local scale (0.01–1 km2). At this stage, key variables causing degradation of the target ecosystem are manipulated to verify the hypothesis. Based on the results of local-scale analyses, the possibility of restoration success can be evaluated, which directs us to practical schemes for future restoration projects at larger scales.  相似文献

The acquisition of masticatory capability by mammals allowed a better processing of food and a consequent increase in the efficiency of nutrients intake by the digestive system. The development of tooth classes and variations in tooth number can be considered intrinsic characteristics of mammalian dentition. These features allowed species to develop specialized dentitions, creating new adaptive zones. Comparative developmental data from knockout mutant mice and human tooth agenesis present new insights on the molecular strategies that permitted rapid phenotypic differentiation, adaptation and speciation of mammalian dentition.  相似文献

Mammalian molars have undergone heavy scrutiny to determine correlates between morphology and diet. Here, the relationship between one aspect of occlusal morphology, tooth cusp radius of curvature (RoC), and two broad dietary categories, folivory and frugivory, is analyzed in apes. The author hypothesizes that there is a relationship between tooth cusp RoC and diet, and that folivores have sharper teeth than frugivores, and further test the correlation between tooth cusp RoC and tooth cusp size. Eight measures of tooth cusp RoC (two RoCs per cusp) were taken from 53 M2s from four species and subspecies of frugivorous apes (Pongo pygmaeus, Pan troglodytes troglodytes, Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii, and Gorilla gorilla gorilla) and two subspecies of folivorous apes (Gorilla beringei beringei, and Gorilla beringei graueri). Phylogenetically corrected ANOVAs were run on the full dataset and several subsets of the full dataset, revealing that, when buccolingual RoCs are taken into account, tooth cusp RoCs can successfully differentiate folivores and frugivores. PCAs revealed that folivores consistently had duller teeth than frugivores. In addition, a weak, statistically significant positive correlation exists between tooth cusp size and tooth cusp RoC. The author hypothesizes differences in tooth cusp RoC are correlated with wear rates, where, per vertical unit of wear, duller cusps will have a longer length of exposed enamel ridge than sharper cusps. More data need to be gathered to determine if the correlation between tooth cusp RoC and tooth cusp size holds true when small primates are considered. ABSTRACT

We herein report the introduction of the IS4O (Improving Students’ Scientific Skills by Using Scaffolding Outlines) teaching approach and its implementation to successfully empower students with initial minor planning competences in mastering complex scientific challenges in the course of Germany’s most-renowned scientific competitions. The IS4O teaching approach itself comprises the unique combination of the differentiating teaching methods Backward Planning and Project Mapping as core teaching elements. The beneficial effect of the IS4O teaching approach on the enhancement of the students planning competences is also discussed. Based on the given results, this teaching approach is mandatory to empower students with initial minor competences in completing a scientific competition successfully with very high assignment of tasks.  相似文献

Objectives: To examine the reasons for tooth loss in an adult population. Methods: Patients who reported to the department of prosthodontics in Institute of Dental Sciences, Belgaum, located in the north‐western part of the state of Karnataka, in the southern region of India over a period of 2 months, with at least one missing tooth (excluding third molars) constituted the sample size. There were a total of 365 patients (185 females and 180 males) within the age group of 16–84 years (mean age 51.06 ± 16.47 years) who fulfilled this criterion. Socio‐demographic profile was recorded along with a clinical examination for assessing the number and pattern of tooth loss. The reasons for tooth loss were recorded according to the history reported by the patient. Results: In the present study of 365 patients, 58.9% of the patients were completely edentulous, 41% were partially dentate, of which 20.8% had lost their teeth from caries, 11% from periodontal disease and 9.3% from a combination of reasons. More females had lost their teeth because of dental caries whereas more males had lost their teeth because of periodontal disease, this being statistically significant. (χ2 = 16.53, p = 0.001). Highly significant results were obtained for age and reasons for tooth loss. (χ2 = 150.39, p < 0.001). Irrespective of the socio‐economic status, dental caries was the most common cause for tooth loss in partially dentate patients though it was not statistically significant (χ2 = 13.62, p = 0.325). Mandibular first molars were the teeth most frequently lost due to dental caries. The maxillary left central incisor was most frequently lost due to periodontal disease, followed by the maxillary right central incisor. Conclusions: Since both dental caries and periodontal disease contributed to tooth loss at different ages, risk indicators need to be identified.  相似文献

The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) response of tooth enamel in a monenergetic neutron beam of 14 MeV was studied, with the aim to evaluate the relative neutron to 60Co sensitivity. Three samples of tooth enamel powder were irradiated in air. A whole tooth and a powdered sample were irradiated in a geometrical PMMA phantom, in order to simulate the real exposure of a tooth inside a human head. The measured dose in enamel was compared to the dose calculated by Monte Carlo simulation. The relative neutron to 60Co sensitivity using different reference materials (air, water and enamel) was evaluated as well. Large differences in sensitivity values were found depending on the reference material: the obtained relative neutron to 60Co sensitivity was 0.47±0.09 for enamel and 0.15±0.03 for water. A comparison with results in fast neutron fields is reported.  相似文献

As animal populations continue to decline, frequently driven by large‐scale land‐use change, there is a critical need for improved environmental planning. While data‐driven spatial planning is widely applied in conservation, as of yet it is rarely used for primates. The western chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) declined by 80% within 24 years and was uplisted to Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2016. To support conservation planning for western chimpanzees, we systematically identified geographic areas important for this taxon. We based our analysis on a previously published data set of modeled density distribution and on several scenarios that accounted for different spatial scales and conservation targets. Across all scenarios, typically less than one‐third of areas we identified as important are currently designated as high‐level protected areas (i.e., national park or IUCN category I or II). For example, in the scenario for protecting 50% of all chimpanzees remaining in West Africa (i.e., approximately 26,500 chimpanzees), an area of approximately 60,000 km2 was selected (i.e., approximately 12% of the geographic range), only 24% of which is currently designated as protected areas. The derived maps can be used to inform the geographic prioritization of conservation interventions, including protected area expansion, “no‐go‐zones” for industry and infrastructure, and conservation sites outside the protected area network. Environmental guidelines by major institutions funding infrastructure and resource extraction projects explicitly require corporations to minimize the negative impact on great apes. Therefore, our results can inform avoidance and mitigation measures during the planning phases of such projects. This study was designed to inform future stakeholder consultation processes that could ultimately integrate the conservation of western chimpanzees with national land‐use priorities. Our approach may help in promoting similar work for other primate taxa to inform systematic conservation planning in times of growing threats.  相似文献

Orthodontic tooth movements are described as the differences between initial and final tooth positions. A computer based method for determination of tooth movements for different treatment methods was developed. A total of 20 casts of the upper jaw of patients treated with tooth positioners or fixed appliances were used as a basis for this study. Tooth movement was analysed on casts before (C i) and after treatment (C f). The casts were digitized either with a COMT or 3D laser scanning systems. After digitization, the models were superimposed in the palate by using a surface–surface matching algorithm. Tooth surfaces of the orthodontically moved teeth were segmented and determination of tooth movement was accomplished by matching the moved teeth from C i to C f. The resulting transformations delivered three dimensional information on translations and rotations. An accuracy of 0.2?mm in translations and 1 degree in rotations could be demonstrated, showing the different efficiency of treatment schemes.  相似文献

The ability of stable isotope analysis to provide insight into ontogenetic dietary changes was examined using bottlenose dolphin tooth and skin samples. Teeth were subsampled to compare tissue produced early in life (outer tooth) to that produced later in life (inner tooth). Outer tooth had significantly higher δ15N values than the corresponding inner sample from the same tooth (n= 60, P= 0.0041), indicating that there was a temporal shift to a lower δ15N diet. There were no significant δ13C differences. Higher δ15N values in young have previously been attributed to the period of suckling. Analysis of skin tissue from stranded animals of different developmental stages similarly indicated that the δ15N values were significantly higher in young animals. Further comparisons indicated that the primary influence for this difference was animals with lengths less than or equal to the largest neonatal dolphin. This difference likely reflects an ontogenetic dietary shift from a sole reliance on milk to a combination of milk and prey species during the first year of life.  相似文献

Before the secretion of hard dental tissues, tooth germs undergo several distinctive stages of development (dental lamina, bud, cap and bell). Every stage is characterized by specific proliferation patterns, which is regulated by various morphogens, growth factors and homeodomain proteins. The role of MSX homeodomain proteins in odontogenesis is rather complex. Expression domains of genes encoding for murine Msx1/2 during development are observed in tissues containing highly proliferative progenitor cells. Arrest of tooth development in Msx knockout mice can be attributed to impaired proliferation of progenitor cells. In Msx1 knockout mice, these progenitor cells start to differentiate prematurely as they strongly express cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p19INK4d. p19INK4d induces terminal differentiation of cells by blocking the cell cycle in mitogen-responsive G1 phase. Direct suppression of p19INK4d by Msx1 protein is, therefore, important for maintaining proliferation of progenitor cells at levels required for the normal progression of tooth development. In this study, we examined the expression patterns of MSX1, MSX2 and p19INK4d in human incisor tooth germs during the bud, cap and early bell stages of development. The distribution of expression domains of p19INK4d throughout the investigated period indicates that p19INK4d plays active role during human tooth development. Furthermore, comparison of expression domains of p19INK4d with those of MSX1, MSX2 and proliferation markers Ki67, Cyclin A2 and pRb, indicates that MSX-mediated regulation of proliferation in human tooth germs might not be executed by the mechanism similar to one described in developing tooth germs of wild-type mouse.  相似文献

We present a novel approach to estimating the transpiration flux and gross primary productivity (GPP) from Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, leaf functional types, and readily available climate data. We use this approach to explore the impact of variations in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere ([CO2]) and consequent predicted changes in vegetation cover, on the transpiration flux and GPP. There was a near 1 : 1 relationship between GPP estimated with this transpiration flux approach and that estimated using a radiation‐use efficiency (RUE) approach. Model estimates are presented for the Australian continent under three vegetation–[CO2] scenarios: the present vegetation and hypothetical ‘natural’ vegetation cover with atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) of 350 μmol mol?1 (pveg350 and nveg350), and for the ‘natural’ vegetation with [CO2] 280 μmol mol?1 (nveg280). Estimated continental GPP is 6.5, 6.3 and 4.3 Gt C yr?1 for pveg350, nveg350 and nveg280, respectively. The corresponding transpiration fluxes are 232, 224 and 190 mm H2O yr?1. The contribution of the raingreen and evergreen components of the canopy to these fluxes are also estimated.  相似文献

Teeth form as appendages of the ectoderm and their morphogenesis is regulated by tissue interactions mediated by networks of conserved signal pathways. Micro-RNA (miRNA) pathway has emerged as important regulator of various aspects of embryonic development, but its function in odontogenesis has not been elucidated. We show that the expression of RNAi pathway effectors is dynamic during tooth morphogenesis and differentiation of dental cells. Based on microarray profiling we selected 8 miRNAs expressed during morphogenesis and 7 miRNAs in the incisor cervical loop containing the stem cell niche. These miRNAs were mainly expressed in the dental epithelium. Conditional deletion of Dicer-1 in the epithelium (DcrK14/) resulted in rather mild but significant aberrations in tooth shape and enamel formation. The cusp patterns of the DcrK14/ molar crowns resembled the patterns of both ancestral muroid rodents and mouse mutants with modulated signal pathways. In the DcrK14/ incisors, longitudinal grooves formed on the labial surface and these were shown to result from ectopic budding of the progenitor epithelium in the cervical loop. In addition, ameloblast differentiation was impaired and resulted in deficient enamel formation in molars and incisors. To help the identification of candidate target genes of the selected tooth enriched miRNAs, we constructed a new ectodermal organ oriented database, miRTooth. The predicted targets of the selected miRNAs included several components of the main morphogenetic signal pathways regulating tooth development. Based on our findings we suggest that miRNAs modulate tooth morphogenesis largely by fine tuning conserved signaling networks and that miRNAs may have played important roles during tooth evolution.  相似文献

Background

According to decades of research on affective motivation in the human brain, approach motivational states are supported primarily by the left hemisphere and avoidance states by the right hemisphere. The underlying cause of this specialization, however, has remained unknown. Here we conducted a first test of the Sword and Shield Hypothesis (SSH), according to which the hemispheric laterality of affective motivation depends on the laterality of motor control for the dominant hand (i.e., the “sword hand," used preferentially to perform approach actions) and the nondominant hand (i.e., the “shield hand," used preferentially to perform avoidance actions).

Methodology/Principal Findings

To determine whether the laterality of approach motivation varies with handedness, we measured alpha-band power (an inverse index of neural activity) in right- and left-handers during resting-state electroencephalography and analyzed hemispheric alpha-power asymmetries as a function of the participants'' trait approach motivational tendencies. Stronger approach motivation was associated with more left-hemisphere activity in right-handers, but with more right-hemisphere activity in left-handers.

Conclusions

The hemispheric correlates of approach motivation reversed between right- and left-handers, consistent with the way they typically use their dominant and nondominant hands to perform approach and avoidance actions. In both right- and left-handers, approach motivation was lateralized to the same hemisphere that controls the dominant hand. This covariation between neural systems for action and emotion provides initial support for the SSH.  相似文献

Summary The influence of colchicine on the addition of 3H-galactose to the enamel protein in secretory amelloblasts of cultured germs of rat molar tooth was investigated by light- and electron-microscopic radioautography. In tooth germs cultured without colchicine, the reaction products of 3H-galactose were observed over Golgi cisternae at early chase times and then localized over the enamel with time. In tooth germs cultured with colchicine, the silver grains were seen over the Golgi cisternae, condensing granules and accumulated secretory granules. Some grains also appeared with time over the pale granular material precipitated in the intercellular space with colchicine treatment. In quantitative analysis with light microscopic radioautography, values of silver grain counts over the unit area (100 m2) on ameloblasts and enamel of colchicine-treated tooth germs were significantly lower at both 0 min and 30 min chase after 30 min pulse than those of control tooth germs, respectively. This finding indicates that colchicine diminished the incorporation of 3H-galactose into the secretory ameloblast of cultured tooth germs. It is suggested that colchicine decreases the activity of the Golgi apparatus with regared to the addition of sugar to the synthesizing glycoprotein in the secretory ameloblast.  相似文献

The centre of resistance and centre of rotation of a tooth are key concepts in orthodontics. Determining the coordinates of these points is essential for planning orthodontic tooth movement. The paper proposes a procedure for experimental determination of the two centres, verifies a previously developed mathematical theory through computer simulations and evaluates the effect of nonlinearity of the periodontal ligament on the parameters related to the centres. The paper relies on the mathematical theory of a rigid body embedded in an elastic medium, physical experiment, finite element method and a simple nonlinear theory of the tooth. The concept of the centre of resistance requires a revision if nonlinearity is taken into account.  相似文献

Regulatory pressures and capacity constraints are forcing the biopharmaceutical industry to consider employing multiproduct manufacturing facilities running on a campaign basis. The need for such flexible and cost-effective manufacture poses a significant challenge for planning and scheduling. This paper reviews the problem of planning and scheduling of biopharmaceutical manufacture and presents a methodology for the planning of multiproduct biopharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear program (MILP) to represent the relevant decisions required within the planning process and is tested on two typical biopharmaceutical industry planning problems. The proposed formulation is compared with an industrial rule based approach, which it outperforms in terms of profitability. The results indicate that the developed formulation offers an effective representation of the planning problem and would be a useful decision tool for manufacturers in the biopharmaceutical industry particularly at times of limited manufacturing capacity.  相似文献
