Abstract Ants were sampled by pitfall traps at 85 sites, 0.5 or 1.0km apart, along six transects across a parapatric boundary between the reptile ticks Aponomma hydrosauri and Amblyomma limbatum near Mt Mary in South Australia. There was no tendency for overall ant density, or for the distribution of any single species of ant, to be related to the tick distribution. Thus the survey found no support for the hypothesis that predation by ants was maintaining the boundary. Along transects there were no correlations between ant and tick densities. Thus the survey found no support for the hypothesis that ant predation was a major factor controlling tick densities. These negative results provide further evidence that single, strong ecological processes cannot explain this well-studied parapatric boundary.  相似文献

Abstract:  We report here the first case of an efficient and specialized predator of the invasive ant species Wasmannia auropunctata : the army ant Neivamyrmex compressinodis . Our results are based on a study that we conducted in French Guiana, a part of the Wasmannia's native range. When N . compressinodis workers attacked W . auropunctata nests, the assaulted workers panicked and left the nests, some of them carrying brood. Nevertheless, during its raids on W . auropunctata , N . compressinodis was able to capture nearly all of the W . auropunctata brood and winged sexuals, whereas none of the attacks by N . compressinodis on other sympatric ant species were successful. Laboratory experiments revealed that the workers of eight compared sympatric species attacked the N . compressinodis individuals and that N . compressinodis workers accepted W . auropunctata brood as well as that of most of the tested species, showing that its specificity probably depends on the reaction of the W . auropunctata workers.  相似文献

Laboratory colonies of Rhytidoponera ants were allowed to prey on the fed and unfed stages of the Australian ticks Aponomma hydrosauri and Amblyomma limbatum. The unfed tick stages had a higher survival than the fed stages. The ants took longer to handle the adult ticks than the nymphs and longer to handle the nymphs than the larvae. The ants also took longer to handle the unfed than fed nymphs, but longer to handle the fed than unfed females. As well as the differences between the tick stages, there was a species effect, with the ants taking longer to handle A. limbatum, and with that tick species having a higher survival than A. hydrosauri after ant predation. These stage and species differences may influence the tick population dynamics. This revised version was published online in November 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

To examine which species of ant are underground predators, we invented a simple bait trap using live mealworms as bait. A total of 75 bait traps were buried in soil at various depths (10, 20, 30 and 50 cm) to investigate the vertical distribution of predatory ants. The ants captured in approximately 50% of the traps were mostlyTetramorium caespitum andSolenopsis japonica. Solenopsis japonica was captured at greater depths (>30 m) thanT. caespitum. Eight kinds of soil invertebrate (the earthworm, wood louse, pill bug, millipede, adults of the dung beetle and carabid beetle, larvae of a cetoniine beetle and the earwig), placed in traps at a depth of 10 cm, varied greatly in attractiveness and vulnerability to ant predation. The earthworm and the wood louse were both attractive and vulnerable to ant predation, whereas the pill bug, the dung beetle and the millipede were attractive but not vulnerable. The larvae of a cetoniine beetle, the carabid beetle and the earwig were mostly unattractive.  相似文献

The impact of predation on Helicoverpa armigera was studied in four field cage exclusion trials on cotton in Kenya. H. armigera egg cohorts were introduced inside predator‐free and open control cages, and the impact of local predator populations on the cohort was examined. Fourteen days after inoculation, exclusion cages had four times more larvae than controls, indicating a strong impact of predation. Ants and Anthocoridae were the predominant predator groups. Exclusion cages had more damaged fruiting plant parts (squares, flowers and bolls) than the control. In the absence of predators, natural mortality of H. armigera was greater as cotton matured, and is likely to be linked to the host plant condition.  相似文献

The Argan Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels (Ericales: Sapotaceae) is an endemic and emblematic tree growing in the centre and the southwest of Morocco. Argan fruits are frequently infested by the Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata Wied (Diptera: Tephritidae). To date, no control program has been undertaken in the Argan forest. This research is the first investigation of natural mortality factors of C. capitata larvae in the Argan forest. The study was conducted at two localities near the city of Essaouira with different climatic conditions. Observations were conducted using 260 late instar larvae which were individually deposited on the ground, under fruiting host trees, where they naturally fall to find a suitable pupation site. Overall, 42% of the larvae died before being able to burrow into the ground, irrespectively of the location. Larval survival and their likelihood of burrowing decreased with increasing ground temperature, as 53% of all the larvae deaths occurred at temperatures over 48°C. However, at lower ground temperature, predation by ants and spiders accounted for 47% of all mortality. Four species of ants carried out 94% of the captures. Monomorium subopacum Mayr (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), which frequently forages under Argan trees, was by far the most efficient predator, due to a powerful sting that rapidly immobilizes the prey. Our results suggest that the burrowing performance of larvae is constrained by high thermal conditions and the presence of ant predators at lower temperatures.  相似文献

Summary This study examined whether the mating or feeding success of females of two tick species, Amblyomma limbatum and Aponomma hydrosauri, is influenced by their site of attachment on a host. Marked interspecific differences were detected in the preferred sites of attachment of females to their common host, the sleepy lizard Tiliqua rugosa, with Amb. limbatum found predominantly in the ears and on the lower back, while Ap. hydrosauri preferred to attach under the forelimbs and on the midback. Data from field surveys suggested that higher proportions of females were mated in the preferred sites for Ap. hydrosauri, and in one of the preferred sites for Amb. limbatum. However, laboratory and field experiments showed that for both species, the mean time before females were mated, mean engorgement time and mean feeding rate were independent of where they were attached to a host. Four hypotheses were considered as explanations of the observed niche segregation; intespecific competition, avoidance of pheromone jamming or adaptations, to maximize mating and feeding, and minimize physical disturbance. These could not totally explain the observed site specificity in either tick species. Site specificity may represent adaptations by each species to other host species encountered within their distributional range.  相似文献

Harvester ants are important seed predators in many xeric environments, and their foraging choices can influence the composition of plant communities. Seed abundance has been cited as an important factor in determining such foraging preferences. Three seed types (sesame, millet, and flax) were experimentally introduced in differing proportions near nests of the ant Messor ebeninus near the Dead Sea, in territory administered by the state of Israel. Two experiments were designed to investigate the effects of this density conditioning on two stages of the ants' subsequent foraging behavior: recruitment to seed patches and selection of seeds from within a patch. When seeds were presented in small, single-species patches, experimentally common seeds were discovered and exploited significantly faster than rare seeds, especially among less preferred seed types. When seeds were presented in large, mixed patches, however, no consistent effect of density was observed.  相似文献

Summary. Using “cafeteria experiments” with forest soil and litter, I obtained evidence that at least some small Neotropical species of Pheidole prey on a wide array of slow-moving invertebrates, favoring those of approximately their own size. The most frequent prey were oribatid mites, a disproportion evidently due in part to the abundance of these organisms. The ants have no difficulty breaking through the calcified exoskeleton of the mites.Received 2 December 2004; revised 18 January 2005; accepted 21 January 2005.  相似文献

Laboratory study of cannibalism and interspecific predation in ladybirds   总被引:10,自引:1,他引:10
Abstract.
  • 1 In the absence of aphids, adult females of Adalia bipunctata (L.) showed a greater reluctance to eat eggs than males.
  • 2 Eggs and young larvae were more vulnerable to cannibalism than older larvae and starved larvae were more vulnerable than well-fed larvae.
  • 3 Both egg and larval cannibalism is inversely related to the abundance of aphids.
  • 4 Eggs are a better food, in terms of larval growth and survival, than aphids.
  • 5 In the absence of aphids interspecific predation occurred, but not equally, between the coccinellids A.bipunctata, A.decempunctata (L.), Coccinella septempunctata L. and C.undecempunctata L.
  • 6 Larvae and adults of A. bipunctata and C.septempunctata were reluctant to eat conspecific eggs painted with a water extract of the other species' eggs and larvae of C. septempunctata were more likely to die after eating a few eggs of A.bipunctata than vice versa.
  • 7 These results indicate that cannibalism occurs mainly when aphid prey is scarce and is adaptive in that it improves the chances of survival, and coccinellids, to varying degrees, are defended against interspecific predation.

Two plataspid hemipteran species proliferated on Bridelia micrantha(Euphorbiaceae). Colonies of Libyaspis sp., never attendedby ants, developed on branches, while Caternaultiella rugosa lived at the base of the trunks, mostly in association withCamponotus brutus that attends them in carton shelters. Bothplataspid species are prey of the coccinellid beetle Anisolemniatetrasticta, whose larvae always detected them by contact. When attacked the Libyaspis nymphs cowered, so that the hypertrophiedlateral sides of their tergits made contact with the substrate, but the ladybirds slid their long forelegs under these nymphs, lifted them, and bit them on the ventral face. The Caternaultiellanymphs, which do not have hypertrophied extremities of thetergits, tried to escape at contact with the ladybirds, butwere rarely successful. To capture them, the ladybirds eitheradopted the previous behavior or directly grasped then bitthem. We noted a graded aggressiveness in the ants toward theladybirds according to the situation: no aggressiveness onthe tree branches; stopping the ladybirds that approached theshelters where the ants attended Caternaultiella; and fullattack of ladybirds that tried to capture Caternaultiella nymphssituated outside shelters. The latter behavior can emit analarm pheromone that triggers the dispersion of their congenerswhile attracting attending C. brutus workers. Naive workersare not attracted, so we deduce that this behavior is the resultof a kind of learning.  相似文献

The present paper is based on original and literature data. In Croatia the first studies on the occurrence of ixodid species were made about 80 years ago. The number of tick species recorded in Croatia considerably increased during the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s of the past century. A total of 21 species of hard tick belonging to 5 genera have been recorded in Croatia. Ixodes is the best represented genus, with seven species recorded. Haemaphysalis is represented by six species, followed by Rhipicephalus with four species. Dermacentor and Hyalomma are represented by two species each. The ticks were collected on 47 different host species. Eleven tick species were collected on Bos taurus and Ovis aries, followed by Capra hircus and Equus caballus with 8 species and Canis lupus familiaris with 6 species. On the remaining 42 host species one, two or three tick species were collected. The most widespread tick is Ixodes ricinus which was found on 25 different host species.  相似文献

Observations on the separation of Theileria sporozoites from ticks   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum ticks infected with Theileria annulata were partially fed on rabbits and then ground up with tissue culture medium. The ground up ticks were treated by centrifugation at 100 g, filtration through membranes of 8 μm pore diameter and centrifugation on a discontinuous density gradient of Percoll. Counts of sporozoites and tick debris were made from Giemsa stained slides of samples at each stage of the separation. Debris was removed during light centrifugation and filtration at a greater rate than sporozoites. After filtration approximately 41% of the original sporozoites remained in the suspension. After density gradient centrifugation most sporozoites were found in a distinct zone, at approx. 1·08 g/cm3 density, separate from most dense debris and light debris and soluble contaminants. After this final centrifugation approximately 24% of the original sporozoites remained in the recovered suspension.  相似文献

Predators and parasitoids may contribute to controlling the population sizes of phytophagous insects, and this has been shown to benefit plants. Phytophagous insects may also be killed by other herbivores (intraguild predation), usually larger-sized vertebrates that ingest insects accidentally while feeding on common food sources. We studied the intraguild predation on acorn weevils by ungulates and assessed the consequences for weevil populations. Infested acorns are prematurely abscised and the weevil larvae finish their development inside the acorns after being dropped. Our results show that weevil larvae were killed by ungulates eating the infested acorns on the ground. Ungulates did not discriminate between infested and sound acorns, and the probability of a larva being incidentally eaten was inversely related to acorn availability. Thus, predation risk was enhanced by the premature drop of infested acorns when acorn availability on the ground was low. Predation rates on infested acorns were much higher where ungulates were present, and acorn infestation rates were significantly lower. However, ungulates did not provide the oaks any net benefit, since the reduction of infestation rates was not enough to compensate for the large amounts of sound acorns eaten by ungulates. Seed predation is usually studied as a progressive loss of seeds by pre- and post-dispersal predators, but the interactions between them are usually not considered. We show that intraguild predation on insects by large ungulates had an effect on the structure of the foraging guild, as the proportion of acorns predated by insects decreased; however, replicating the same experimental design in different ecological scenarios would increase the strength of these results. In conclusion, the present study shows the importance of considering the multi-trophic interactions between seed predators in order to have a complete picture of granivory.  相似文献

The levels of natural predation of puparial and adult tsetse flies, Glossina pallidipes Austen, were investigated at Nguruman, Kenya, during January 1989. Puparial experiments involved the production, by individually tubed female flies, of naturally deposited, unhandled puparia in soil cores; handled puparia were obtained from groups of caged flies kept in the normal way. Equal numbers of handled and unhandled puparia were planted out at different densities (1, 2, 4 or 8 per linear metre) in fifty-one natural puparial sites in four major vegetation types. After 10 days puparia were recovered using a soil corer and sieving system. Average predation rates (adjusted for the displacement of puparia by vertebrate activity at the puparial sites) were 9.4% and 7.8% for the two types of puparia during the experiment, equivalent to an average loss of 23.7% of all puparia during a normal 30-day developmental period. Maximum potential predation rates of adult flies were investigated by pinning freshly killed adults at densities of 1, 2, 4 or 8 per m3 to natural vegetation and scoring the results after 24 h. 70% of flies were attacked during this time, by a variety of predators, thought to include both vertebrates and invertebrates. No density dependence was detected in the experiments, either because natural puparial densities were too low for it to occur at this stage of the life cycle or because adult predation levels were too high for it to be detected. Present results are compared and contrasted with previous results for this and another species of tsetse. Calculations of the life-time fertilities of female tsetse suggest that the levels of puparial predation revealed by the present experiments are entirely realistic. Behaviour of the adult flies allows them to escape most of the considerable predation pressure under which they live. How they do so remains a mystery.  相似文献

Role of intraguild predation in aphidophagous guilds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The concept of intraguild predation (IGP) appeared in 1987–1989 to describe trophic interactions within a guild of arthropods inhabiting a sand dune desert: consumers B prey on consumers A and both of them prey on a common resource. Theory predicts that the two types of consumers should only coexist if consumer A is more efficient in the conversion of the common resource than B. As a consequence, this resource is more abundant in the presence than in the absence of intraguild predators. Such a theoretical prediction probably explains the vivid interest shown by ecologists involved in biological control for IGP. It is therefore not surprising that many papers report on IGP among natural enemies of aphids. A close examination of these reported cases indicates that they rarely fulfil the theoretical requirements for IGP. That is, guilds of aphidophagous insects are rarely the theatre of IGP but frequently of interspecific predation. This is confirmed by experimental assessment of the cost of attacking and eating intraguild prey instead of extraguild in ladybird beetles.  相似文献

We studied the hunting behaviour of Myrmicaria opaciventris (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in order to evaluate if it can be used as a biological control agent against the termites that damage sugarcane plantations. Hunting workers foraged in groups and recruited nestmates at short-range when they encountered large termite soldiers or groups of small termite workers. Differences in prey capture concerned the: (1) means of detection (from a distance or by contact); (2) termite body part seized (small termites seized by the body; large termites by an appendage); (3) percentages of prey abandoned; and (4) use of venom. The sting of the workers is spatulated implying a topical application of the venom on the prey. Large termites were stretched by several workers whose adherence to the substrate is facilitated by well-developed arolia and claws on the legs while others spread venom on the body and carved it up. An adaptation to termite capture was noted with a distribution of tasks between the workers which subdued prey, and those which transported it. In the former case, the workers easily eliminated termite soldiers, successively attacked several termite workers and even captured new individuals while holding the first ones captured between their mandibles before retrieving them all at once. The remaining individuals were retrieved by the transporting workers. Given this particularly effective predatory strategy, we concluded that, under certain conditions, M. opaciventris can be used as a biological control agent against termites.  相似文献
