A comparison of allozyme and mtDNA frequencies was used for insight into a situation in the Pecos River, Texas where contact between the endemic pupfish (Cyprinodon pecosensis) and an introduced congener (C. variegatus) has resulted in rapid, geographically extensive genetic introgression. Temporal changes in mean frequencies of diagnostic allozyme markers indicate that the clinal pattern of introduced genetic material (Echelle and Connor 1989) is slowly decreasing in amplitude. Significant rank concordance in diagnostic allele frequencies among sites and across sampling years indicates directional influences upon temporal allele frequency change. These observations are consistent with the theory of gene flow in neutral clines. Levels of introgression indicated by each of four allozyme loci and mtDNA were roughly equivalent. The early history of the hybrid swarm is explained by genetic swamping, possibly mediated by selection for C. variegatus or C. variegatus × C. pecosensis, at a time when the normally abundant endemic species had been catastrophically depleted. High frequencies of an introduced GPI-A allele in all samples of intergrades suggests that the introduced genome originated with a single founding event.  相似文献

Maintenance of genetic distinction in the face of gene flow is an important aspect of the speciation process. Here, we provide a detailed spatial and genetic characterization of a hybrid zone between two subspecies of the European rabbit. We examined patterns of allele frequency change for 22 markers located on the autosomes, X‐chromosome, Y‐chromosome and mtDNA in 1078 individuals sampled across the hybrid zone. While some loci revealed extremely wide clines (≥ 300 km) relative to an estimated dispersal of 1.95–4.22 km/generation, others showed abrupt transitions ( 10 km), indicating localized genomic regions of strong selection against introgression. The subset of loci showing steep clines had largely coincident centers and stepped changes in allele frequency that did not co‐localize with any physical barrier or ecotone, suggesting that the rabbit hybrid zone is a tension zone. The steepest clines were for X‐ and Y‐chromosome markers. Our results are consistent with previous inference based on DNA sequence variation of individuals sampled in allopatry in suggesting that a large proportion of each genome has escaped the overall barrier to gene flow in the middle of the hybrid zone. These results imply an old history of hybridization and high effective gene flow and anticipate that isolation factors should often localize to small genomic regions.  相似文献

Abstract A previous study of the hybrid zone in western Panama between white‐collared (Manacus candei) and golden‐collared manakins (M. vitellinus) documented the unidirectional introgression of vitellinus male secondary sexual traits across the zone. Here, we examine the hybrid zone in greater genetic and morphological detail. Statistical comparisons of clines are performed using maximum‐likelihood and nonparametric bootstrap methods. Our results demonstrate that an array of six molecular and two morphometric markers agree in cline position and width. Clines for male collar and belly color are similar in width to the first eight clines, but are shifted in position by at least five cline widths. The result is that birds in intervening populations are genetically and morphometrically very like parental candei, but males have the plumage color of parental vitellinus. Neither neutral diffusion nor nonlinearity of color scales appear to be viable explanations for the large cline shifts. Genetic dominance of vitellinus plumage traits is another potential explanation that will require breeding experiments to test. Sexual selection remains a plausible explanation for the observed introgression of vitellinus color traits in these highly dimorphic, polygynous, lek‐mating birds. Two other clines, including a nondiagnostic isozyme locus, are similar in position to the main cluster of clines, but are broader in width. Thus, introgression at some loci is greater than that detected with diagnostic markers. Assuming that narrow clines are maintained by selection, variation in cline width indicates that selection is not uniform throughout the genome and that diagnostic markers are under more intense selective pressure. The traditional focus on diagnostic markers in studies of hybrid zones may therefore lead to underestimates of average introgression. This effect may be more pronounced in organisms with low levels of genetic divergence between hybridizing taxa.  相似文献

Inferences of selection and migration in the Danish house mouse hybrid zone   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We analysed the patterns of allele frequency change for ten diagnostic autosomal allozyme loci in the hybrid zone between the house mouse subspecies Mus musculus domesticus and M. m. musculus in central Jutland. After determining the general orientation of the clines of allele frequencies, we analysed the cline shapes along the direction of maximum gradient. Eight of the ten clines are best described by steep central steps with coincident positions and an average width of 8.9 km (support limits 7.6–12.4) flanked by tails of introgression, indicating the existence of a barrier to gene flow and only weak selection on the loci studied. We derived estimates of migration from linkage disequilibrium in the centre of the zone, and by applying isolation by distance methods to microsatellite data from some of these populations. These give concordant estimates of σ =  0.5–0.8 km generation     . The barrier to gene flow is of the order of 20 km (support limits 14–28), and could be explained by selection of a few per cent at 43–120 underdominant loci that reduces the mean fitness in the central populations to 0.45. Some of the clines appear symmetrical, whereas others are strongly asymmetrical, and two loci appear to have escaped the central barrier to gene flow, reflecting the differential action of selection on different parts of the genome. Asymmetry is always in the direction of more introgression into musculus , indicating either a general progression of domesticus into the musculus territory, possibly mediated by differential behaviour, or past movement of the hybrid zone in the opposite direction, impeded by potential geographical barriers to migration in domesticus territory.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 593–616.  相似文献

In the present study we investigate a contact zone between two population groups of the tephritid fly Urophora cardui. We investigate scenarios that may have produced the genetic differentiation of the two groups, and we describe the 'rare allele phenomenon' from the contact zone. The rare allele phenomenon refers to alleles that are found at high frequency in contact zones but are rare or lacking outside the contact zone. The phenomenon is often observed in hybrid zones between subspecies of limited reproductive compatibility, but seldom in populations with random mating. Clinal genetic variation was observed at three loci in the contact zone. Three alleles at the locus Aat showed steep clines, between 20--70 km wide. A rare Aat-A allele occurred at high frequency in the centre of the contact zone. Two further loci, Hk and Pgd, showed less steep clinal genetic variation, the transition being in and slightly south of the centre of the Aat cline. Populations showed Hardy--Weinberg proportions and there was no evidence for linkage dis-equlibrium. These findings suggest random mating and gradual introgression between the population systems, which may originate from at least two range expansions. Aat's steep clines and rare allele may indicate selection on Aat alleles, although we presently can not quantify any agents. Because U. cardui experiences random mating in the contact zone with no apparent 'hybrid' incompatibility, mating experiments offer the possibility for future enquiries about the genetic basis of the rare allele phenomenon.  相似文献

Strong ecological selection on a genetic locus can maintain allele frequency differences between populations in different environments, even in the face of hybridization. When alleles at divergent loci come into tight linkage disequilibrium, selection acts on them as a unit and can significantly reduce gene flow. For populations interbreeding across a hybrid zone, linkage disequilibria between loci can force clines to share the same slopes and centers. However, strong ecological selection on a locus can also pull its cline away from the others, reducing linkage disequilibrium and weakening the barrier to gene flow. We looked for this “cline uncoupling” effect in a hybrid zone between stream resident and anadromous sticklebacks at two genes known to be under divergent natural selection (Eda and ATP1a1) and five morphological traits that repeatedly evolve in freshwater stickleback. These clines were all steep and located together at the top of the estuary, such that we found no evidence for cline uncoupling. However, we did not observe the stepped shape normally associated with steep concordant clines. It thus remains possible that these clines cluster together because their individual selection regimes are identical, but this would be very surprising given their diverse roles in osmoregulation, body armor, and swimming performance.  相似文献

Studies of the genetics of hybrid zones can provide insight into the genomic architecture of species boundaries. By examining patterns of introgression of multiple loci across a hybrid zone, it may be possible to identify regions of the genome that have experienced selection. Here, we present a comparison of introgression in two replicate transects through the house mouse hybrid zone through central Europe, using data from 41 single nucleotide markers. Using both genomic and geographic clines, we found many differences in patterns of introgression between the two transects, as well as some similarities. We found that many loci may have experienced the effects of selection at linked sites, including selection against hybrid genotypes, as well as positive selection in the form of genotypes introgressed into a foreign genetic background. We also found many positive associations of conspecific alleles among unlinked markers, which could be caused by epistatic interactions. Different patterns of introgression in the two transects highlight the challenge of using hybrid zones to identify genes underlying isolation and raise the possibility that the genetic basis of isolation between these species may be dependent on the local population genetic make-up or the local ecological setting.  相似文献

Two parapatric subspecies of the eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly, Papilio glaucus glaucus and P. g. canadensis, differ greatly in larval survival and growth on host plants in the Magnoliaceae, Salicaceae, and Betulaceae. In the first part of this study, butterflies were collected from 17 sites along a transect from Georgia to Quebec and used for allozyme electrophoresis. Two X- (or Z-)linked enzyme loci (Ldh and Pgd) showed allele frequency differences that delineated a hybrid zone between the subspecies in northern Pennsylvania and south-central New York. No significant linkage disequilibrium could be detected among allozyme loci within the hybrid zone samples. Genetic differentiation at Ldh and Pgd coincides with subspecies differences in diapause control and female mimicry, which are also sex-linked. Larval offspring of butterflies from 13 of the sites were then tested in the laboratory for survival and growth on Liriodendron tulipifera (Magnoliaceae), Populus deltoïdes (Salicaceae) and Betula lutea (Betulaceae). Steep clines in survival rates matched the position of the hybrid zone. Hybrid zone larvae showed intermediate survival rates and significant heterogeneity among families on all three plants, indicating presence of substantial genetic variation. The results suggest that differential host use by P. g. glaucus and P. g. canadensis is maintained primarily by independent clines in selection intensity for ability to use allopatric sets of host plants, coupled with restricted gene flow across the hybrid zone.  相似文献

Hybrid zones provide an opportunity to study the effects of selection and gene flow in natural settings. We employed nuclear microsatellites (single sequence repeat (SSR)) and candidate gene single-nucleotide polymorphism markers (SNPs) to characterize the genetic architecture and patterns of interspecific gene flow in the Picea glauca × P. engelmannii hybrid zone across a broad latitudinal (40–60 degrees) and elevational (350–3500 m) range in western North America. Our results revealed a wide and complex hybrid zone with broad ancestry levels and low interspecific heterozygosity, shaped by asymmetric advanced-generation introgression, and low reproductive barriers between parental species. The clinal variation based on geographic variables, lack of concordance in clines among loci and the width of the hybrid zone points towards the maintenance of species integrity through environmental selection. Congruency between geographic and genomic clines suggests that loci with narrow clines are under strong selection, favoring either one parental species (directional selection) or their hybrids (overdominance) as a result of strong associations with climatic variables such as precipitation as snow and mean annual temperature. Cline movement due to past demographic events (evidenced by allelic richness and heterozygosity shifts from the average cline center) may explain the asymmetry in introgression and predominance of P. engelmannii found in this study. These results provide insights into the genetic architecture and fine-scale patterns of admixture, and identify loci that may be involved in reproductive barriers between the species.  相似文献

The water stricter species Limnoporus dissortis and L. notabilis hybridize across a broad zone in western Canada. Body length and alleles at four allozyme loci show a steep cline along the east slope of the Rocky Mountains in western Alberta, while in central British Columbia the parental phenotypes coexist without merging fully. One sex-linked locus shows little introgression, while there is apparently considerable gene flow at three autosomal loci. Although the hybrid zone has characteristics of a broad tension zone, the spatial distribution of introgression suggests that habitat patchiness and differential habitat associations of the two species also contribute to the pattern of hybridization. Asymmetry in interspecific mating success and incompatibilities of sex chromosomes with each other or with cytoplasmic factors appear to account for the occurrence of L. dissortis genotypes within the range of L. notabilis, and the lack of L. notabilis genotypes within the range of L. dissortis. The genetic structure of this hybrid zone supports the importance of sex-linked traits in maintaining the integrity of species, while its spatial structure suggests that extrinsic habitat features can combine with intrinsic genetic incompatibilities to produce complex hybrid interactions.  相似文献

The fire-bellied toads Bombina bombina and B. variegata differ extensively in biochemistry, morphology, and behavior. We use a survey of five diagnostic enzyme loci across the hybrid zone near Cracow in Southern Poland to estimate the dispersal rate, selection pressures, and numbers of loci which maintain this zone. The enzyme clines coincide closely with each other and with morphological and mitochondrial DNA clines. Although the zone lies on a broad transition between environments suitable for bombina and variegata, the close concordance of diverse characters, together with increased aberrations and mortality in hybrids, suggest that the zone is maintained largely by selection against hybrids. There are strong “linkage disequilibria” between each pair of (unlinked) enzyme loci (R? = 0.129 [2-unit support limits: 0.119–0.139]). These are probably caused by gene flow into the zone, and they give an estimate of dispersal (σ = 890 [790–940] m gen). The clines are sharply stepped, with most of the change occurring within 6.15 (5.45–6.45) km, but with long tails of introgression on either side. This implies that the effective selection pressure on each enzyme marker (due largely to disequilibrium with other loci) is s* = 0.17 (0.159–0.181) at the center but that the selection acting directly on the enzyme loci is weak or zero (se < 0.0038). The stepped pattern implies a barrier to gene flow of 220 (48–415) km. This would substantially delay neutral introgression but would have little effect on advantageous alleles; the two taxa need not evolve independently. Strong selection is needed to maintain such a barrier: hybrid populations must have their mean fitness reduced by a factor of 0.65 (0.60–0.77). This selection must be spread over a large number of loci to account for the concordant patterns and the observed cline widths (N = 300 [80–2,000]).  相似文献

This study points out the evidence of a hybrid zone between two groups of genetically differentiated populations of chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) in Turkey. Genetic structure, gene flow and introgression levels, based on 16 allozyme loci, were investigated on 34 population samples spanning the entire C. sativa distribution area in this country. The occurrence of the hybrid zone, located in the Bithynian region, was inferred in a group of populations showing the following genetic characteristics: (i) enhanced genetic variability and intermediate allelic frequencies between those of the Western and Eastern groups of populations; (ii) sharp and concordant changes in allele frequencies; (iii) decreased gene flow with the Western and Eastern populations. Starting from the cline width estimated to be 324 km, strength of selection was evaluated from the gene flow distance, as indicated from the degree of genetic structuring outside the hybrid zone. Evolutionary processes shaping the observed genetic differentiation and introgression are discussed on the basis of palynological data, palaeoclimatic events and evidence of hybridization found in other plant and animal species in the same region.  相似文献

The distribution of multilocus genotypes found within a natural hybrid zone is determined by the sample of genotypes present when the hybrid zone first formed, by subsequent patterns of genetic exchange between the hybridizing taxa, and by drift and selection within each of the hybrid zone populations. We have used anonymous nuclear DNA restriction fragment polymorphisms (RFLPs) to characterize the array of multilocus genotypes present within a well-studied hybrid zone between two eastern North American field crickets, Gryllus pennsylvanicus and Gryllus firmus. These crickets hybridize along a zone of contact that extends from New England to Virginia. Previous studies have shown that both premating and postmating barriers exist between the two cricket species, but the absence of diagnostic morphological and allozyme markers has made it difficult to assess the consequences of these barriers for genetic exchange. Analyses based on four diagnostic anonymous nuclear markers indicate that hybrid zone populations in Connecticut contain few F1 hybrids, and that nonrandom associations persist among nuclear gene markers, between nuclear and cytoplasmic markers, and between molecular markers and morphology. Field cricket populations within the hybrid zone are not “hybrid swarms” but consist primarily of crickets that are very much like one or the other of the parental species. Despite ample opportunity for genetic exchange and evidence for introgression at some loci, the two species remain quite distinct. Such a pattern appears to be characteristic of many natural hybrid zones.  相似文献

Mitochondrial genome (mito‐genome) introgression among metazoans is commonplace, and several biological processes may promote such introgression. We examined two proposed processes for the mito‐genome introgression between Rana chensinensis and R. kukunoris: natural hybridization and sex‐biased dispersal. We sampled 477 individuals from 28 sites in the potential hybrid zone in the western Tsinling Mountains. Mitochondrial gene (cytb) trees were used to examine the introgression events. Microsatellite DNA loci, cytb and morphological data were used to identify hybrids and to examine the extent of natural hybridization. We detected rampant bidirectional introgressions, both ancient and recent, between the two species. Furthermore, we found a wide hybrid zone, and frequent and asymmetric hybridization. The hybrid zone cline analysis revealed a clear mitochondrial–nuclear discordance; while most nuclear markers displayed similar and steep clines, cytb had a displaced cline centre and a more gradual and wider cline. We also detected strong and asymmetric historical maternal gene flow across the hybrid zone. This widespread hybridization and detected low mito‐nuclear conflicts may, at least partially, explain the high frequency of introgression. Lastly, microsatellite data and population genetic methods were used to assess sex‐biased dispersal. A weak pattern of female‐biased dispersal was detected in both species, suggesting it may not play an important role in the observed introgression. Our data are consistent with the hybridization hypothesis, but support for the sex‐biased dispersal hypothesis is weak. We further suggest that selective advantages of the R. kukunoris‐type mito‐genome in thermal adaptation may also contribute to the introgression between the two species.  相似文献

Two distinct population groups of the pond frog Rana lessonae were detected in peninsular Italy and Sicily by multilocus electrophoresis: one group inhabits the peninsula down to northern Calabria, the second occurs in southern Calabria and on Sicily. Fixed alternative alleles distinguish the two groups at 5 of the 25 loci examined; marked allele frequency differences were observed at two additional loci. On average, the two groups differ by a Nei's standard genetic distance of 0.4. A wide hybrid zone (about 120 km) occurs between the two groups, with high genotypic diversity and absence of pure parental genotypes in central Calabria. Patterns of allozyme variation suggest that at least two distinct contact and hybridization events occurred, one in the Catanzaro, the other in the Crati-Sibari plains, about 70 km to the north. Geological evidence indicates that these areas correspond to two main marine-flooded grabens that would have repeatedly interrupted or reduced genetic exchange during Plio-Pleistocene times. The finding of a fixed difference at the Mdhp-1 locus between Sicilian and Calabrian R. lessonae witnesses their continuing differentiation following their last separation by definitive opening of the Strait of Messina, about 50 000 years ago. The wide hybrid zone, the diversity of genotypes and the agreement with Hardy-Weinberg expectations suggest complete hybrid fertility. Different patterns of introgression were observed at the various loci. The pattern of allelic variation at loci in R. lessonae is paralleled by the pattern of variation in lessonae genomes of the sympatric hemiclonal hybrid Rana esculenta, into which lessonae genomes are introduced each generation as a result of hybridogenesis.  相似文献

The cyprinid fishes, Notropis cornutus and N. chrysocephalus, hybridize in a long, narrow zone in the midwestern United States. To quantify the extent of introgression of genetic markers outside of this zone, samples were collected along transects starting near the region of contact (as defined by morphological characters), followed by samples progressively more distant. Diagnostic allozymic and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction site markers were used to estimate the extent of introgression outside of the zone, while polymorphic allozyme and mtDNA markers were used to evaluate the potential for gene flow among populations within transects. Analysis of populations from the northern transect provided evidence for differentiation of populations for some of the markers; however, on average, enough gene flow has occurred to overcome substantial differentiation. Introgressed mtDNA and allozyme haplotypes were rare and found only in the population closest to the contact zone. The rarity of introgressed alleles in the more northern populations is consistent with the recent origin of these populations after the Wisconsin glaciation (less than 12,000 years bp) and/or selection maintaining the northern boundary of the contact zone. Analysis of populations from the southern transect revealed evidence for population subdivision but no evidence for introgression at the diagnostic allozyme loci; however, nearly all individuals from this transect possessed introgressed mtDNA haplotypes, with samples furthest from the contact zone exhibiting the highest frequencies of introgression. Patterns of variation for one of the polymorphic allozyme markers (Est-A) and introgressed mtDNAs were highly correlated, suggesting that allozymic heterogeneity at this locus is also the result of introgression. The most likely explanation for these data is that these introgressed haplotypes are indicators of a more southern position of the contact zone during the Pleistocene, with the contact zone shifting northward with the recession of the glacial front. Such movement implicates selection in the maintenance of distributional limits of these species, and hence, the width and position of the contact zone.  相似文献

The extent to which alleles can disperse across a hybrid zone depends on the selection they are subjected to in the hybrid genetic background or, for those that are selectively neutral, on their ability to escape from the unfavourable environment by recombination. Three markers spanning a 45 cM segment in the center of the X chromosome were used to investigate the degree to which selection against X chromosome linked genes helps to maintain the barrier to gene flow in the hybrid zone between Mus musculus domesticus and M. m. musculus in Denmark. The introgression of all the sex chromosome specific markers was more limited than that of the autosomal enzymes (Idh1, Amy, Gpd1, Pgm1, Es1, Es2, Mpi, Np1, Es10, Sod1) and the mitochondrial DNA. The cline for DXPas2, which is in the center of the X chromosome, is extremely steep and shows that certain genes located in this region are strongly selected against in the hybrid background. The clines of the other two X-linked markers, Hprt and DXPas1, and of the Y chromosome are not as abrupt and all three have similar asymmetric introgression patterns. Although the musculus variants appear to behave in much the same way as those of the autosomal genes, the domesticus variants do not introgress. The results show that X-linked and to a lesser extent Y-linked genes are more strongly selected against in the hybrid genome than the mitochondrial genome or the different autosomal loci. This suggests that co-adapted gene systems involving the sex chromosomes may play an important role in the hybrid breakdown between the two subspecies.  相似文献

The study of natural hybrid zones can illuminate aspects of lineage divergence and speciation in morphologically cryptic taxa. We studied a hybrid zone between two highly divergent but morphologically similar lineages (south‐western and south‐eastern) of the Iberian endemic Bosca's newt (Lissotriton boscai) in SW Iberia with a multilocus dataset (microsatellites, nuclear and mitochondrial genes). STRUCTURE and NEWHYBRIDS analyses retrieved few admixed individuals, which classified as backcrosses involving parental individuals of the south‐western lineage. Our results show asymmetric introgression of mtDNA beyond the contact from this lineage into the south‐eastern lineage. Analysis of nongeographic introgression patterns revealed asymmetries in the direction of introgression, but except for mtDNA, we did not find evidence for nonconcordant introgression patterns across nuclear loci. Analysis of a 150‐km transect across the hybrid zone showed broadly coincident cline widths (ca. 3.2–27.9 km), and concordant cline centres across all markers, except for mtDNA that is displaced ca. 60 km northward. Results from ecological niche modelling show that the hybrid zone is in a climatically homogenous area with suitable habitat for the species, suggesting that contact between the two lineages is unlikely to occur further south as their distributions are currently separated by an extensive area of unfavourable habitat. Taken together, our findings suggest the genetic structure of this hybrid zone results from the interplay of historical (biogeographic) and population‐level processes. The narrowness and coincidence of genetic clines can be explained by weak selection against hybrids and reflect a degree of reproductive isolation that is consistent with cryptic speciation.  相似文献

The F5 and FM2 chromosome races of the Sceloporus grammicus complex form a hybrid zone in the Mexican state of Hidalgo. Previous studies of this zone have assessed genetic structure by averaging estimates of shape and width across three diagnostic chromosome markers. This approach is likely to mask subtle differences in cline shape among loci (e.g. selected vs. neutral), and obscure any displacement of cline centres (if present). Here we use maximum likelihood methods to construct the best fitting individual clines for three chromosomal markers, and also add two new markers; the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) locus, and the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) repeat. For each locus, hybrid zone models were fitted by cline shape and width, and the position and number of segments describing the centre of the zone. Pairwise comparisons between all clines revealed concordance between chromosomes 2 and 6, but significant discordance in cline structure among all other paired combinations. The concordance of chromosomes 2 and 6 suggests that these clines are maintained by genome-wide forces. The discordance of the chromosome 1 cline suggests an influence of asymmetric introgression, while the mtDNA cline is probably influenced by selection and drift. The rDNA locus reveals a pattern best explained by either extreme asymmetric introgression or gene conversion. The structure of zone indicates that genome-wide processes and locus specific selective forces as well as drift, are operating to different degrees on different loci. The locus-by-locus approach used here permits a finer discrimination among possible mechanisms responsible for the maintenance of the individual clines.  相似文献

Hybrid zone movement may result in substantial unidirectional introgression of selectively neutral material from the local to the advancing species, leaving a genetic footprint. This genetic footprint is represented by a trail of asymmetric tails and displaced cline centres in the wake of the moving hybrid zone. A peak of admixture linkage disequilibrium is predicted to exist ahead of the centre of the moving hybrid zone. We test these predictions of the movement hypothesis in a hybrid zone between common (Bufo bufo) and spined toads (B. spinosus), using 31 nuclear and one mtDNA SNPs along a transect in the northwest of France. Average effective selection in Bufo hybrids is low and clines vary in shape and centre. A weak pattern of asymmetric introgression is inferred from cline discordance of seven nuclear markers. The dominant direction of gene flow is from B. spinosus to B. bufo and is in support of southward movement of the hybrid zone. Conversely, a peak of admixture linkage disequilibrium north of the hybrid zone suggests northward movement. These contrasting results can be explained by reproductive isolation of the B. spinosus and B. bufo gene pools at the southern (B. spinosus) side of the hybrid zone. The joint occurrence of asymmetric introgression and admixture linkage disequilibrium can also be explained by the combination of low dispersal and random genetic drift due to low effective population sizes.  相似文献
