Interannual population oscillations ofMonoporeia affinis and sedentary chironomids are negatively correlated in Lake Mälaren. Sedentary chironomid abundance regressed againstM. affinis density was highly significant at a lag response of one year (adj. R2=0.54, P=0.0001). The inverse correlation between Tanytarsini (Micropsectra sp. andTanytarsus sp.) andM. affinis densities supports a recruitment limitation hypothesis, viz. that the growth or survival of early instar chironomids is low at high amphipod densities. Microcosm studies showed density-dependent effects on the growth and survival of second instarCh. riparius larvae across an amphipod density gradient. No significant effects were found on growth or survival of third instars. These findings support the chironomid recruitment limitation hypothesis. Amphipod predation on early instar chironomid larvae is suggested as a population controlling mechanism.  相似文献

Structure, dynamics and production of the benthic fauna in Lake Manitoba   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The structure and diversity, including seasonal variation, and the energy budget of the benthic fauna in southern Lake Manitoba were studied and related to physical and chemical properties of the water and sediment. A total of 47 taxa were identified but 90 percent of individuals were represented by seven taxa (Candona rawsoni, Cytheromorpha fuscata, Pisidium spp., Amnicola limosa, Harnischia curtilamellata, Procladius freemani and Chironomus sp.). The spatial and temporal dynamics, dispersion patterns and life cycles of these abundant species are described. The net production was 5.05 Kcal/m2/yr for the only carnivorous species (Procladius freemani) and 28.53 Kcal/m2/yr for non-carnivorous species. The gastropod Amnicola limosa and the chironomid Chironomus sp. appear to be the most important contributors to the total biomass and net production of the community. Annual turnover rate (P/B) for all seven taxa aver-aged 2.82, with the chironomid species having the highest value and the gastropod species the lowest (3.7 and 1.75 respectively).Contribution No. 52 of the University of Manitoba Field Station (Delta Marsh).  相似文献

We examined the effects of a seven-year detrital exclusion on chironomid assemblages in an Appalachian headwater stream. We hypothesized that litter exclusion would lead to a reduction in all chironomids at both the subfamily and generic levels because organic matter serves as both food and habitat in these headwater streams. Tanytarsini total abundance and biomass significantly declined after litter exclusion. Before litter exclusion, Tanytarsini average abundance was 4271 ± 1135 S.E. m−2 and 625 ± 98 after litter exclusion. Biomass was 3.57 ± 0.96 mg AFDM m−2 before litter exclusion and 1.03 ± 0.9 after exclusion. In contrast, Orthocladiinae abundance and biomass did not change because a psammanophilic chironomid, Lopescladius sp., and other Orthocladiinae genera did not decline significantly. Overall chironomid taxa richness and diversity did not change as a result of litter exclusion. However, Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) of genus-level biomass did show a clear separation between the litter exclusion stream and a reference stream. Separation of taxa between the two streams was due to differences in fine (r 2 = 0.39) and coarse (r 2 = 0.36) organic matter standing stocks and the proportion of small inorganic substrates (r 2 = 0.39) present within a sample. As organic matter declined in the litter exclusion stream, overall chironomid biomass declined and the chironomid community assemblage changed. Tanytarsini were replaced by Orthocladiinae in the litter exclusion stream because they were better able to live and feed on biofilm associated with inorganic substrates. Handling editor: K. Spatial heterogeneity of benthic communities has clear implications for estimating lake production, biodiversity as well as identifying representative sites for palaeolimnological studies. This study investigates chironomid variability and the controlling factors (i.e., environmental and spatial variables) in surface sediments from Taihu Lake (2,338 km2), a hypertrophic lake in the Yangtze delta in eastern China. The spatial distribution of chironomids shows distinct heterogeneity. Microchironomus tabarui-type and Tanypus dominate the midge communities around the estuaries, while Cricotopus sylvestris-type and Polypedilum nubifer-type are the predominant taxa in the East Bays and the East Taihu Lake. Redundancy analysis was used for exploring the relationships between chironomid variability and environmental and spatial stressors. Four variables were identified as significant factors that influence chironomid community structures. The high nutrient concentrations around the estuarial areas favor the development of nutrient-tolerant taxa. Water depth-related oxygen depletion in the open lake during algae blooms prohibits the survival of many organisms, except for a few hypoxic-resistant species. High transparency in the East Bays and the East Taihu Lake indirectly creates a favorite microhabitat for macrophyte-associated chironomid species through aquatic plants. Space per se is a significant forcing factor for organism community and distribution at scales of >1,000 km2. It might be important to consider spatial variables more explicitly in future studies of chironomids in large lakes where multiple stressors make the interactions within the ecosystem more complicated. This study aims to illustrate the ecological characteristics of specific chironomid taxa related to a “microecosystem” which is contributed by the multiple environmental gradients within a large lake, and to provide empirical support for interpretation of palaeochironomid data.  相似文献

1. Seasonal changes in longitudinal patterns of environmental conditions and macroinvertebrate community distributions were examined in an alpine glacial stream (Roseg River, Switzerland). 2. Physico‐chemical parameters reflected seasonal changes in glacial influence via shifts in water sources and flowpaths (glacial meltwater versus ground water), and were best described by turbidity, particulate phosphorus and specific conductance. High nitrogen concentrations indicated snowmelt was the main water source in June. 3. Macroinvertebrate densities and taxon richness were highest during spring (4526 m–2 and 16 taxa, all sites combined) and late autumn/early winter (8676–13 398 m–2 with 16–18 taxa), indicating these periods may be more favourable for these animals than summer when glacial melting is maximal. Diamesa spp. (Chironomidae) dominated the fauna at the upper three sites (>95% of zoobenthos) and were abundant at all locations. Other common taxa at lower sites (1.2–10.6 km downstream of the glacier terminus) included other chironomids (Orthocladiinae, Tanytarsini), the mayflies Baetis alpinus and Rhithrogena spp., the stoneflies Leuctra spp. and Protonemura spp., blackflies (Simulium spp., Prosimulium spp.), and Oligochaeta. 4. Co‐inertia analysis revealed a strong relationship between environmental conditions and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages. Furthermore, it elucidated temporal variability in longitudinal response patterns, as well as a similarity in temporal patterns among individual sites. 5. Our results suggest that zoobenthic gradients are not solely related to temperature and channel stability. Seasonal shifts in sources and pathways of water (i.e. extent of glacial influence), and periods of favourable environmental conditions (in spring and late autumn/early winter) also strongly influenced zoobenthic distributions.  相似文献

The structure of diversity in a chironomid community inhabiting submerged macrophytes was analysed, including the relationship between predation/competition and chironomid diversity. Diversity as expressed by the Shannon functionH was found to be strongly associated with equitabilityJ but not with species richnessS in this community. Chironomid species richness was correlated with the abundance of diatoms. DiversityH and equitabilityJ were significantly correlated with chironomid density through the year. Invertebrate predators were generally rare and occurred sporadically throughout the year in this habitat, with only three species (Chaetogaster diaphanus, Rhyacophila dorsalis andZavrelimyia sp.) attaining >25% habitat occupancy. Neither these predators nor non-chironomid competitors encountered in the same habitat (Stylaria lacustris, Ophidonais serpentina, Hydroptila sp.,Simulium spp. andHydropsyche siltalai) appeared to affect diversity measures of the chironomid community under study, apart from a weak tendency of highSimulium density negatively affecting the total chironomid abundance. In conjunction with other analyses, this chironomid community seemed to be stochastically dynamic and was little influenced by biotic factors such as predation and competition.  相似文献

Production and energy flow in the benthic community of a Texas pond   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Energy flow (A = R + P; assimilation = respiration + production) and life-history/density-biomass cycles were followed for 1 year in a mayfly (Brachycercus sp.) population and two chironomid (Procladius sp. and Tendipes decorus) populations in a 0.94 ha pond located in north-central Texas. Temperature (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30°C) effects on R and patterns of metabolic compensation/acclimatization were determined for the mayfly and chironomids. Chironomid and mayfly populations dominated the nine benthic macroinvertebrates identified in the pond, with greatest abundances in winter and winter-spring respectively. Annual energy flow was 51 kcal m–2 (R = 40 kcal, P = 11 kcal or 1.9 g) in Brachycercus sp., 23 kcal m–2 (R = 5 kcal, P = 18 kcal or 2.4 g) in Procladius sp. and 74 kcal m–2 (R = 17 kcal, P = 57 kcal or 6.0 g) in T. decorus. Each species metabolically compensated partially to temperatures en countered during their life histories.  相似文献

Four submerged macrophytes were analysed with their respective assemblages of chironomid and algal taxa. Studies were made bimonthly, from January to November, in a shallow macrophyte-dominated lake. The periphytic algal community was represented by chlorophytes, diatoms and cyanobacteria; diatoms showed the highest relative abundance on the macrophyte species during the study. Algal biomass was affected by the season, and in January the highest values were found on Stratiotes aloides L., Potamogeton lucens L., Myriophyllum spicatum L.; in July on Chara aculeolata Kütz. The lowest algal biomass, on most of the macrophytes studied, was found in September. Larvae of Dicrotendipes sp., Diplocladius cultriger Kieffer, Endochironomus albipennis gr., Endochironomus impar (Walker), Glyptotendipes sp. and Paratanytarsus austriacus Kieffer were dominant within the chironomid community. The spatial distribution of chironomids between macrophytes species was related to periphytic algae biomass and certain environmental variables (temperature, water transparency, biomass of chlorophytes and diatoms). Analysis of chironomid diet and the results of canonical correspondence analysis confirmed this relationship. The strongest chironomid-algae relationships were observed on S. aloides and P. lucens.  相似文献

The effects of chironomid larvae,Chironomus plumosus, and tubificid worms,Limnodrilus spp., on particle redistribution in lake sediment were investigated experimentally using pots containing sediments obtained from Lake Suwa, Japan. The chironomids and tubificids increased the water content of surface sediment. The chironomid larvae had no effect on particle size distribution, while tubificids continuously accumulated small particles on the surface sediment through their selective feeding activity. Particles larger than 0.125 mm were buried at a sediment depth of 6 cm. In Lake Suwa, long diatom frustules, large plant debris and blue-green algal flocs were found to accumulate in the deeper layer of the lake sediment inhabited by tubificids at high density.  相似文献

Chironomid retreats, constructed out of sand grains upon submerged wood debris, increase the surface area available for diatom colonization. The three dimensional substratum afforded by chironomid tubes supports up to twelve times the diatom biavolume found upon adjacent, unmodified substratum in a northern Michigan stream. Diatom enumeration within scrapings from small defined areas on artificial substrata, combined with examination of intact natural substrata through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), reveals distinct, microdistribution patterns. The larval retreats of two major taxa of tube-dwelling chironomid's (Micropsectra sp. and Pseudodiamesa cf. pertinax Garrett) display significantly different diatom communities relative to adjacent masonite substratum. Substratum without chironomid tubes is primarily colonized by Achnanthes minutissima Kütz. and Cocconeis placentula Ehr., exhibiting the lowest species diversity of microhabitats examined. The diatom flora upon sand tubes of Micropsectra sp. is dominated by Opephora martyi Herib., as is the flora of sand grains collected from the stream sediment load. These two micro-habitats exhibit a high community similarity (SIMI). The SIMI index also suggests that the flora of P. pertinax tubes is highly similar to that of sand grains. Diversity, however, is almost three times greater on P. pertinax tubes and SEM observations reveal that this microhabitat is characterized by a more spatially complex flora; Nitzschia and Navicula spp. dominate the upperstory, and O. martyi is located on underlying sand grains. Results indicate that tube-building chironomids in Carp Creek affect diatom microdistribution by: (1) stabilizing sand grains and associated flora within their retreats, (2) providing a ‘refugium’ for upperstory diatom taxa from the mayfly grazer, Baetis vagans McDunnough (Insecta: Ephemeroptera), and (3) through local nutrient enrichment.  相似文献

  • 1 A combination of field and laboratory experiments was used to assess the impact of chironomid grazers on taxonomic composition, abundance and dispersion of epiphytic algal assemblages.
  • 2 In the laboratory, Psectrodadius sp. reduced the biovolume of algal species preferred as food and increased the degree of clumping of non-preferred species. Thienemanniella cf. fusca had both positive and negative effects (depending on the algal species) on the biovolumes of algal species preferred as food and increased the degree of clumping of non-preferred species.
  • 3 In field exclosures, no effect of removal of chironomid larvae from the grazer assemblage could be detected in autumn or winter experiments. A third, longer removal experiment, conducted in summer, resulted in increased biovolumes of edible Cosmarium spp. and Aphanocapsa spp., preferred foods of chironomid larvae. Biovolumes of Lyngbya sp., Eulbochaete spp. and Oedogortium spp., filamentous taxa used extensively in larval case construction, also increased. Chironomid larvae had no effect on total algal biovolume or biovolume of large unicellular algae.
  • 4 Chironomid larvae can influence epiphytic algal assemblages through selective grazing by reducing the biovolumes of preferred foods and through case-building activity by reducing the biovolumes of construction materials.

The distribution, abundance and standing crop biomass of chironomid larvae were determined at one-meter depth intervals along three radial transects. Samples were collected by coring soft sediments while diving. Three genera were found in the lake: Chironomus sp. (collector-filtering larvae), Ablabesmyia sp. (predatory larvae) and Goeldichironomus sp. (collector-filtering larvae). Standing crop densities of chironomids, averaged over the entire lake, varied from 30,594 larvae/m2 to 11,428 larvae/m2 at different depths. No statistically significant zonation in density was found for the two most common taxa, Chironomus sp. (87.8% of specimens) and Ablabesmyia sp. (9.0%), however the deepest zones (>4 m) had the lowest estimated densities. Significant differences in standing crop biomass were detected, with the 6 m depth having greatest biomass. The increase in standing crop biomass was a function of (1) lower frequency of first instars of Chironomus sp. and Ablabesmyia sp. at 6 m (2) higher average larval biomass of both species at 6 m and (3) very significant increase in average biomass of fourth instars of Chironomus sp. at 6 m compared to fourth instars at shallower depths. These results indicate that the lentic chironomids of this isolated oceanic habitat consist of a small number of species that are ecological generalists and tolerant of low oxygen concentrations.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 Production of chironomid communities of three first order, Appalachian Mountain streams was estimated and the effects of an insecticide-induced disturbance on chironomid production was examined.
  • 2 Annual production of non-Tanypodinae chironomids in the streams during the first study year (no treatment) ranged from 1366 to 3636 mg m?2, while production of Tanypodinae chironomids ranged from 48 to 116 mg m ?2. Production/biomass ratios ranged between 19 and 23 for non-Tanypodinae and from 6 to 7 for Tanypodinae chironomids.
  • 3 Insecticide applications resulted in significantly lower chironomid densities and biomass in the treated stream relative to the pretreatment year and reference stream. Annual production of non-Tanypodinae (703 mg m?2) and Tanypodinae (32 mg m ?2) chironomids in the treated stream decreased by 64% and 67%, respectively, compared with the pretreatment year. In contrast, production of non-Tanypodinae (2084 mg m?2) increased by 34% and production of Tanypodinae (96 mg m?2) by 57% in the reference stream.

The distribution and abundance of larval chironomids in Lake Hayes were studied from December 1973 to March 1975. The mean annual production of the two dominant species, Chironomus zealandicus and Chironomus sp. a, was 29.2 g m−2 dry weight which is approximately 4.3 % of the average annual phytoplankton production in the lake. A high annual P/B ratio of 18.5 is consistent with the multivoltine life cycle of C. zealandicus. Larval chironomid production in the second summer when Anabaena blooms were absent was only one quarter of that in the first summer and is consistent with the hypothesis that the production of benthic chironomids in Lake Hayes is closely linked to that of the phytoplankton through the sedimentation of autochthonous organic matter.  相似文献

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) in three sympatric species of larval chironomids were analyzed in a temperate eutrophic shallow lake in Japan. Markedly lower δ13C values were reported in Chironomus plumosus (?51.2 ‰) and Tanypus sp. (?43.5 ‰) than those in photoautotrophic carbon sources [particulate organic matter (POM) and sediment]. There were positive correlations between δ13C and δ15N in the two chironomid species. These results indicated that they assimilated carbon derived from biogenic methane by exploiting methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB). In contrast, Propsilocerus akamusi exhibited similar δ13C values to those of POM or sediment. A δ13C-based isotope mixing model was used to estimate the dietary contributions of MOB to each chironomid species. The mean contributions ranged from 11 to 15 % in C. plumosus, 13 to 19 % in Tanypus sp., but only up to 5 % in P. akamusi. In an aquarium, we observed that individuals of C. plumosus and Tanypus sp., which exhibited low δ13C values, built U-shaped larval tubes in the sediment, and an oxidized layer developed around these tubes. Propsilocerus akamusi did not exhibit this behavior. These results suggest that tube building may provide larval chironomids with greater access to methane-derived carbon through increased opportunities to feed on MOB.  相似文献

The temporal and spatial variability in the midge assemblage found in a backwater lake of the Mississippi River was examined. Bi-weekly samples were taken during the summers of 1987 and 1988. Four taxa of chironomids were found. The population density and sizes of chironomids, and the proportion that each taxon comprised of the midge assemblage, varied significantly in time and space. In an attempt to examine whether the variability noted was related to sediment accretion in the lake, sedimentation rates were measured. There were few correlations among sedimentation rate or the organic matter content of the collected sediment and the structure of the midge assemblage. Those few correlations that were statistically significant were low and often paradoxical. For example negative relationships were found between the density and size of Chironomus spp., a detritivore, and the amount of sediment deposited or its organic matter content. Also no significant relationships were found between the density of the predator Cryptochironomus spp. and the density of other chironomids (potential prey). These negative findings indicate that factors other than food, such as sediment texture, may be more important than food availability in structuring chironomid assemblages in backwater areas. There was spatial variability in the densities and sizes of chironomids that may be explained by differences in sediment texture and organic matter. This suggests that short-term inputs of sediment (as ascertained by sediment traps) may not greatly influence midge assemblages while the long-term changes in sediment composition may have large influences.  相似文献

A study on the profundal chironomids of the artificial Lake Campotosto (Central Italy) was carried out during the summer/early autumn of 1983 and 1984, in order to analyse their composition and community structure in relation to the lake trophic level assessed by water chemical analysis.A total of about 2000 specimens belonging to 15 taxa were collected during the study.Chironomus plumosus group andTanytarsus spp. dominated in 1983 and 1984, respectively, showing a competitive relationship probably due to the larval size. The functional feeding organization was mostly composed of collectors (percentages greater than 90%), revealing the presence of abundant fine organic deposits (FPOM). Diversity and evenness appeared to be negatively affected by the monotony of food, which seems to constitute the key factor in governing both the taxonomic and the trophic structure of chironomid fauna.A clear discrepancy between water chemical data and profundal chironomid analyses was observed in the assessment of the lake trophic level. Sediments exhibited eutrophicated conditions, whereas overlying waters indicated an oligotrophic status. The relevance of profundal macrobenthic investigations in detecting eutrophication is stressed.  相似文献

It has been hypothesized that dabbling ducks (Anas spp.) time breeding to coincide with annual regional peaks in emerging dipterans, especially Chironomidae, which are important prey for newly hatched ducklings. However, this hypothesis has never been evaluated in a replicated lake-level study, including year effects in emergence patterns. We collected duck and invertebrate data from 12 lakes during the nesting seasons 1989–1994 in a watershed in southern Finland. The oligotrophic study lakes are typical of the boreal Holarctic, as are the three focal duck species: mallard Anas platyrhynchos L., widgeon Anas penelope L and teal Anas crecca L. Hatching of ducklings showed a clear peak in relation to ambient phenology (annual ice-out date of lakes), whereas chironomid emergence was more erratic and showed no clear peak at the lake level, although total watershed-level emergence was somewhat higher before and long after the duck hatching peak. Thus, we find no evidence that ducklings hatch in synchrony with abundance peaks of emerging chironomids. There was large within-year temporal variation in chironomid emergence among lakes, but this was not correlated with ambient temperature. The rank of individual lakes with respect to the abundance of emerging chironomids was consistent among as well as within years, a predictability that ought to make adaptive lake choice by ducks possible. On the lake level, there was a positive correlation between the total amount of emerging chironomids and brood use. We argue that emergence patterns of chironomids on typical boreal lakes are neither compressed nor predictable enough to be a major selective force on the timing of egg-laying and hatching in dabbling ducks. Despite spatial (among-lake) patterns of abundance of emerging chironomids being predictable within and among years, the observed pattern of brood use suggests that other factors, e.g. habitat structure, also affect lake choice.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of chironomid larvae were investigated in experimental rice fields at the Bukit Merah Agricultural Experimental Research Station, Penang, Northern Malaysia. The mean density of chironomid larvae during the period of the study (including two cultivation seasons) was 121 larvae m?2. Chironomus kiiensis (48.6%) was the most abundant species, while four other species, Polypedilum trigonus (4.8%), Tanytarsus formosanus (22.6%), Tanypus punctipennis (13.9%), and Clinotanypus sp. (10.1%) occurred less frequently, although they were present during all wet phases of rice cultivation. Generally, water depth, rice plant height, conductivity, and nitrate–nitrogen content of the water only weakly influenced the abundance of the larvae. Other environmental parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, daytime water temperature, total suspended solids, phosphate, and sediment total organic matter did not significantly affect larval populations. The community structure of chironomids in this rice agroecosystem followed the dynamic changes of the field including agronomic practices, patterns of water availability, and phases of rice plant growth.  相似文献
