We studied haematocrit variation with age and reproductive status in chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica) at Deception Island, South Shetlands. There was a significant difference in haematocrit values between different age groups (adults vs nestlings and juveniles). Adults had a higher haematocrit value than juveniles and nestlings and juveniles had higher haematocrit values than nestlings. There was also a significant difference in haematocrit values between adults of different status (breeding vs moulting). Breeding adults had higher haematocrit values than moulting adults. The observed differences between age groups were thought to be the result of different oxygen demands due to exercise. The observed differences between adults of different status could reflect the different demands associated with reproduction and moult fasting.  相似文献

The effect of 4 sampling routines--venipuncture, intravenous cannula, intravenous cannula following the administration of a tranquiliser (xylidino dihydrothiazine hydrochloride), intravenous cannula following exercise--were compared. Blood pH and base excess values were similar after venipuncture and cannula sampling, but higher (P less than 0 with 05) after the administration of the tranquiliser and lower (P less than 3 with 05) following exercise. Blood haemoglobin, haematocrit and lactate levels followed this pattern, while plasma protein levels were similar for all treatments except after exercise, where they were higher (P less than 0 with 05). The recovery of various blood parameters to normal values after a period of exercise was also studied: acid-base balance had returned to near normal within 60 min, while haemoglobin and haematocrit levels had returned to normal within 10 min.  相似文献

We determined the values of haematocrit and blood chemistry of the black vulture (Aegypius monachus) in Extremadura (Spain). We analysed 57 nestlings, five feral adults, seven captive individuals in their first year and five captive adults. Free-living adults had a higher haematocrit and lower calcium and alkaline phosphatases concentrations than captive birds. There were differences in haematocrit and in the concentrations of glucose, uric acid, total proteins, alkaline phosphatases, phosphorus and aspartate aminotransferase between nestlings and young in their first year and adults. The estimated age of the nestlings was significantly correlated with haematocrit, plasma glucose and total protein concentrations. The physical condition of nestlings was significantly correlated with plasma alkaline phosphatases levels.  相似文献

A hematological study of the rainbow trout has permitted to establish a sexual difference in the parameters related to it, such as haemoglobin, haematocrit, erythrocyte and leukocyte count. The types of leukocytes were homologated to the human blood. Haemoglobin, haematocrit, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, erythrocyte and leukocyte count values were lower in female than male. The normal values of some biochemistry parameters were equally studied and in some cases they similarly showed a sexual difference. Creatinine, triglycerides, phosphatase alkaline, sodium and globulin values were higher in female than male. Establishing a sexual difference from the biochemical and hematological parameters is possible.  相似文献

1. Handicap models of sexual selection propose that male ornaments are indicators of male quality and that honesty is enforced by the costs imposed by the exaggerated ornamental traits. In long-distance migratory birds that feed on the wing, the aerodynamic cost of exaggerated ornamental characters should be particularly high because the size of the ornaments deviates from the natural selection optimum. During migration, birds are expected to raise their oxygen consumption in relation to the energetic demands imposed by their morphology. An increase of haematocrit is an adaptive response to enhance oxygen uptake and efficiency of transfer to the muscular tissues during spells of intense muscular activity.
2. The change of haematocrit of Barn Swallows ( Hirundo rustica ) after their arrival to the breeding sites, and the relationships between haematocrit values recorded after migration and the size of ordinary and sexually selected morphological characters in three Barn Swallow populations were analysed.
3. Males had higher haematocrit values than females. Individual haematocrit values declined after arrival to the breeding sites. Haematocrit values of males were significantly and positively correlated with the size of their ornamental tail but not correlated with other characters, thus suggesting that well-ornamented males, in order to arrive early, have to raise their haematocrit above the level of short-tailed males.
4. Males and females of similar tail length did not differ in their haematocrit, thus suggesting that sexual dimorphism in haematocrit might be functionally related to dimorphism in tail length.
5. Our results are consistent with the handicap principle because long-tailed males experience lower mortality and larger seasonal reproductive success compared with short-tailed males.  相似文献

In the present investigation the studies on erythrocyte and leucocyte counts, haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit values, blood biochemistry of protein, glucose and cholesterol, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, pH value, diameter of erythrocyte and clotting time were made in different sex and size (weight group) of an Indian field rat, Rattus rattus arborious. The number of erythrocyte, haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit values were found to be higher in females than the males, while the number of leucocyte was lower in females in comparison to males. In the biochemical estimation the value of protein in females was high while that of the glucose and cholesterol were lower than that of the males. All the above values showed an increasing tendency with the increase in body weight. pH value, diameter of erythrocyte and clotting time were found to be almost constant in rats of different weight groups and different sex.  相似文献

The validity of the haematocrit or packed cell volume as an indicator of condition in wild birds has recently been questioned. We reviewed over 300 published papers on haematocrit values for wild birds. These studies show that changes in haematocrit could be caused by a number of different natural factors that include age, sex, geographical elevation, energy expenditure, parasitism, nutrition and genetics. Haematocrit also increased with age from hatching, due to increased erythropoiesis, so that adult birds generally have greater haematocrit values than nestlings or juveniles. Haematocrit values were either independent of elevation or increased with elevation. A meta-analysis of 36 studies showed no difference in haematocrit between the sexes. Relationships between haematocrit value and both energy expenditure and parasitic infection vary between studies. In temperate climates, haematocrit tended to be higher in winter than in summer, which may be due to dehydration or increased oxygen demand caused by thermogenesis, moult or acquisition of reproductive status. Our review indicates that the use of haematocrit as a sole indicator of condition or health could lead to incorrect conclusions if natural factors that can affect haematocrit are not taken into consideration.  相似文献

The viscosity of blood from rainbow trout was measured following manipulation of haematocrit by bleeding, hypoxia. exercise, and anaesthesia. Blood viscosity when measured at high shear rate (225 s 1) was proportional to haematocrit, but the dependence of viscosity on shear rate was far less for swollen erythrocytes from exercised and anaesthetized trout. Erythrocyte swelling was most marked in exercised and anaesthetized trout, and is a confounding factor when considering the effect of haematocrit on viscosity.
The viscosity of blood with variable haematocrit, but constant mean cell Hb concentration, indicated that the relative oxygen transport capacity in trout was optimal at a haematocrit of 30%. Data from this, and earlier studies show that haematocrit in trout is variable and labile, yet none of the haematocrit values following manipulations are less than 85% of optimal. Optimal haematocrit is however, significantly higher than measured values from either cannulated or acutely venesected resting trout.  相似文献

The effect of heat stress and dehydration on certain blood parameters were studied in the pigeon. Pigeons exposed to heat-stress and dehydration showed higher haematocrit values. Serum cyclic AMP levels, both with and without corrections made for difference in haematocrit, showed a more than two-fold increase in heat-stressed and dehydrated pigeons. Serum triglyceride level (before and after correction for haematocrit difference) in the experimental birds dropped to less than half that in the control birds. Total serum thyroxine (T4) did not show significant change in the experimentals (either with or without correction for haematocrit), although bound T4 and T3 index showed a statistically significant drop in the experimental group, after the correction for haematocrit. Total serum protein and albumin values after correction for haematocrit difference showed significant decreases in experimental birds. In pigeons exposed to heat-stress and dehydration, serum sodium increased while potassium dropped (with and without haematocrit correction). Heat stress and dehydration did not have any significant effect on serum levels of total cholesterol, uric acid, sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium.  相似文献

Rabbit seminal plasma catalase is much higher than in the semen of other mammals, and differences appear to be inherited. Because of the scarcity of information on rabbit blood catalase and haematocrit in Dutch-belted rabbits, an investigation of possible effects of gender, age and genetics on these variables was undertaken. There were 191 rabbits sampled at 2-3 months, 130 at 12 months and 61 at 18-24 months of age. There was no age effect on the haematocrit values and on blood catalase activity. At 12 months of age males had an average haematocrit value of 44% compared with 40% for females (P < 0.05). Corresponding average catalase values were 431 and 356 units/ml of blood (P < 0.05). Also catalase was measured in the semen and blood of 34 males, and males differed in both their blood and semen catalase activity (P < 0.05). The correlation between the two traits was r = 0.44. Heritability (h2) estimates, based on 231 rabbits were 0.40 for blood catalase activity, and 0.26 for haematocrit. The genetic correlation between the two variables was 0.83 (P < 0.05). These studies are consistent with the literature in that female rabbits have a slightly lower haematocrit value than males, and this is associated with a lower catalase activity. This appears to be the first report of a study that compares rabbit blood catalase in males and females of different ages. Preliminary evidence that differences may have a heritable basis is consistent with previous studies on rabbit semen catalase.  相似文献

The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of age at weaning and breed on the stress response of calves to weaning and their temperament. At calving, 14 Parda de Montaña calves and 14 Pirenaica calves were randomly assigned to either early weaning (at 90 days) or traditional weaning (at 150 days) treatment. During nursing, calves were allowed to suckle their dams twice a day for 30 min. After weaning, calves were placed in an adjacent barn without access to their dams, where they remained for 7 days. On day 8 after weaning, they were transported to a feedlot where they received an intensive diet. Blood samples were taken 168 h before weaning (baseline) and 6, 24, 48 and 168 h after weaning for cortisol, fibrinogen and haematology analyses, and temperament was measured 90 and 180 days after weaning with the flight speed test. Cortisol concentration increased after weaning, irrespective of age at weaning. Early-weaned calves had a lower fibrinogen baseline and a greater increase in fibrinogen concentrations 48 h after weaning than traditionally weaned calves. Moreover, fibrinogen concentration returned to baseline values 168 h after weaning in traditionally weaned calves, whereas it remained high in early-weaned calves. Concerning breed effects, Pirenaica calves had higher cortisol concentration and fibrinogen increments after weaning than Parda de Montaña calves. Slight alterations occurred after weaning in haematology, but all parameters returned to baseline values 168 h after weaning, with no significant effects of age at weaning or breed. Despite the absence of clinical signs, early-weaned calves of both breeds suffered marginal anaemia, according to haemoglobin values. Regardless of age at weaning, Pirenaica calves had greater reactivity to human presence than Parda de Montaña calves, according to their higher flight speed values measured. Finally, early-weaned calves were lighter than traditionally weaned calves at weaning, but had similar weight gains in the feedlot. Consequently, they needed an additional 40 days to reach the target weight, irrespective of breed. Therefore, age at weaning had no major effects on the stress response to weaning or temperament, but early weaning increased the length of the feedlot period. On the other hand, Pirenaica calves were more reactive than Parda de Montaña calves to the stress of weaning and human presence.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to assess the effect of feeding high-surface ZnO instead of common ZnO on the performance, rumen fermentation, blood minerals, leukocytes and antioxidant capacity of pre- and post-weaning calves. Thirty male suckling Holstein calves were allotted to one of three experimental groups (10 replicates) in a completely randomised design. Calves received: (1) a low Zn diet without Zn supplementation (control diet), (2) a high Zn diet containing 50 mg supplementary Zn/kg dry matter (DM) as common ZnO or (3) a high Zn diet containing 50 mg supplementary Zn/kg DM as high-surface ZnO (nano-ZnO). The control diet contained a native Zn content of 35.5, 34.7 or 33.7 mg/kg DM for the age periods of 7 to 30, 31 to 70 and 71 to 100 d, respectively. Supplementation of the diet with Zn did not change the dry matter intake (DMI) of calves during d 7 to 30 but increased the ADG in this period (p < 0.05). During age periods of 31 to 70 and 71 to 100 d, DMI and ADG of the Zn supplemented calves were higher (p < 0.05) than the control animals. The nutrient digestibility and the concentration of rumen volatile fatty acids were positively affected (p < 0.05) and the rumen ammonia-N concentration decreased (p < 0.05) by dietary Zn supplementation. Furthermore, the incidence of diarrhoea and pneumonia was lower in calves receiving the Zn supplemented diets. Irrespective of ZnO source, the blood total antioxidant capacity, leukocyte and haematocrit levels significantly increased (p < 0.05) with the ZnO supplemented diets. The post-weaning DMI, nutrient digestibility and blood haematocrit levels were higher in calves receiving high-surface ZnO, compared to those supplemented with common ZnO. With inclusion of the Zn sources in pre- and post-weaning diets, the blood Zn concentration increased (p < 0.05), but the blood Cu, Fe, Ca, P and Mg levels remained unchanged. Regardless of source, dietary supplementation of young calves with ZnO improved the performance and decreased rumen ammonia-N and the incidence of diseases. Moreover, high-surface ZnO had advantages over common ZnO in increasing the post-weaning feed intake, digestibility and blood Zn concentration.  相似文献

Earlier reports indicate that calves derived from in vitro produced (IVP) embryos are more susceptible to neonatal disease than calves produced after artificial insemination (AI) or natural mating. The aims of the present study were to investigate whether calves born after IVP embryos show an altered macromolecule absorption (immunoglobulin G (IgG) and porcine serum albumin (PSA)) compared with AI calves and whether the macromolecule absorption could be related to the degree of acidosis or to the cortisol secretion around birth. Hence, IgG and PSA absorption in control AI calves (n=7) was compared with that in two groups of IVP calves (IVP-defined: SOFaa embryo culture with polyvinyl alcohol, n=6; IVP-serum: SOFaa embryo culture with serum and co-culture, n=8). The calves were fed colostrum (40ml/kg) at 2, 6 and 12h after birth. At 24h after birth, both AI and IVP calves had achieved a level of plasma IgG sufficient to provide passive immunization (>15mg/ml). When the values were adjusted for the varying colostral IgG contents and the degree of acidosis, the IVP-defined calves had significantly lower peak plasma IgG concentrations than the AI calves at 18-24h after birth (P<0.04). However, when the macromolecule marker (PSA), was fed to all calves at 2 and 12h after birth the resulting plasma PSA levels were significantly lower in the AI calves compared with the IVP calves during the whole observation period (P<0.0001). Calves with a moderate neonatal acidosis (mean pH<7.2 during the first 30min after birth) had reduced peak plasma IgG concentration at 18-24h after birth (P<0.02) compared to calves without acidosis. The basal and ACTH-stimulated cortisol levels were lower in the newborn IVP-defined calves than in the AI calves (P<0.05) and the IVP-serum calves (P<0.002). Cortisol levels shortly after birth correlated positively with birth weight (r=0.60, P<0.0001) and with gestation length (r=0.34, P<0.04). Since, the IVP calves absorbed sufficient amounts of IgG from colostrum to acquire sufficient passive immunity, we conclude that the lower viability described in IVP offspring probably is not caused by an impaired passive immunization. IVP-defined calves had significantly lower absorption efficiency of IgG compared with AI calves, whereas absorption of a non-Ig macromolecule (PSA) was higher for IVP than AI calves. This might indicate a more selective absorption in AI calves in favor of IgG. Acidosis around birth affected immunoglobulin absorption negatively. IVP-defined calves had significantly lower cortisol levels the first 3h after birth and during an ACTH-challenge and a lower IgG absorption efficiency, which might indicate a mild degree of organ dysmaturity in these calves.  相似文献

We compared the blood thixotropic/shear-thinning properties and the red blood cells’ (RBC) rheological properties between a group of patients with sickle cell anaemia (SS) and healthy individuals (AA). Blood thixotropy was determined by measuring blood viscosity with a capillary viscometer using a “loop” protocol: the shear rate started at 1 s−1 and increased progressively to 922 s−1 and then re-decreased to the initial shear rate. Measurements were performed at native haematocrit for the two groups and at 25% and 40% haematocrit for the AA and SS individuals, respectively. RBC deformability was determined by ektacytometry and RBC aggregation properties by laser backscatter versus time. AA at native haematocrit had higher blood thixotropic index than SS at native haematocrit and AA at 25% haematocrit. At 40% haematocrit, SS had higher blood thixotropic index than AA. While RBC deformability and aggregation were lower in SS than in AA, the strength of RBC aggregates was higher in the former population. Our results showed that 1) anaemia is the main modulator of blood thixtropy and 2) the low RBC deformability and high RBC aggregates strength cause higher blood thixotropy in SS patients than in AA individuals at 40% haematocrit, which could impact blood flow in certain vascular compartments.  相似文献

Nine right apical lobes of healthy Friesian calves and 10 right apical lobes of double-muscled calves of Belgian White and Blue (BWB) breed were suspended in an airtight box, inflated at a constant transpulmonary pressure (Ptp), and subjected to quasi-sinusoidal pressure changes (amplitude: 0.5 kPa) at a frequency of 30 cycles/min. Lobar resistance (RL) was partitioned at six different lung volumes into three components: central airway resistance (Rc), small airway resistance (Rp), and tissue resistance (Rt). Pressure in small airways (2-3 mm ID) was measured with a retrograde catheter. Alveolar pressure was sampled in capsules glued onto the punctured pleural surface. RL was minimal at values of Ptp comprised between 0.5 and 0.7 kPa and increased at higher and lower values of Ptp. At a Ptp of 0.5 kPa, Rc, Rp, and Rt represented 30, 15, and 55% of RL, respectively, in Friesian calves and 25, 25, and 50% in BWB calves. Rp increased markedly at low lung volumes. Rt was responsible for the increase of RL at high Ptp. Rc tended to decrease at high Ptp. The significantly higher values of Rp in BWB calves (P less than 0.05) might explain the sensitivity of this breed to severe bronchopneumonia.  相似文献

The serum growth hormone (BGH) and free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations of large groups of calves (male and female ranging in age from 8 to 14 days and from 3 to 6 months old), bulls, oxen, heifers and cows under normal conditions were compared with the serum BGH and FFA values of corresponding large groups of animals under stress conditions. Stress was caused by transport, as it routinely occurs, and was further reinforced by a stay of several hours in unfamiliar surroundings. Stress provokes a significant increase in serum FFA in all groups and induced a significant decrease in serum BGH in all groups, with the exception of the non-pregnant heifers. The male and female calves which were 8 to 14 days old, had significantly higher BGH levels than the older animals. The female calves from 3 to 6 months of age, and the heifers had significantly lower BGH levels than the cows. The males had higher serum BGH values than the females, but a significant difference could be demonstrated only between the male and female calves of both age-groups. The oxen, which were 1 to 3 years old, had significantly higher BGH levels than the non-pregnant heifers of the same age. It appeared that gestation had no influence on the serum BGH and FFA levels of both heifers and cows.  相似文献

Haematocrits were measured in goldfish, Carassius auratus L., collected in early spring and late summer from two locations in southern Ontario, Canada. At one location (Hamilton Harbour) the goldfish population suffered an epizootic of haemorrhagic lesions resulting in chronic anaemia, and at the second location (Cambridge) the goldfish population was disease-free; haematocrits of the feral fish were compared with values obtained from a commercial breeding stock (CBS), and with published haematocrit values for cyprinid fish. Haematocrits in males were larger than in females in all collections of feral fish except spring-caught (7–15°C ambient temperature) fish from Cambridge; no sex differences were evident in the immature CBS fish. Haematocrits were higher in feral female goldfish collected from higher ambient temperatures (15–25°C) than in comparable fish collected from lower ambient temperatures (4–15°C) at both collection sites, and also in males collected from Cambridge. Conversely, the haematocrit in the CBS fish was significantly decreased in fish transferred from 12 to 21°C. Haematocrits of the healthy (Cambridge) population were significantly larger than in comparable fish from Hamilton Harbour.  相似文献

Responses of the blood content, breathing function and gaseous metabolism to changes of motional activity level in calves in the first 30 days of a postnatal period were investigated. Keeping of calves in conditions natural for mature animals at different motor activity levels as compared with the locomotion limitation leads to a lesser reduction of hemoglobin content, haematocrit ratio, red cells and reticulocytes count in blood of calves during first 30 days of life. In comparison with calves with additional motor activity, 10-day old calves with natural motor activity and locomotion limitation showed an increase of the protein level and reduction of glucose and cholesterol in the blood. Locomotion limitation of calves during the first 30 days of postnatal period caused reduction of the blood oxygen carrying capacity (erythrocytes and reticulocytes count) with simultaneous decrease of breathing function and gaseous metabolism efficiency (breathing output, minute ventilation, carbon dioxide output and oxygen uptake).  相似文献

Marine fishes caught in the Skagerrak, 27 different species representing various groups of fishes (Cyclostomi, Holocephali, Elasmobranchii and Teleostei), were examined for the following haematological and biochemical blood parameters: haematocrit, haemoglobin, mean corpuscle haemoglobin concentration, total plasma protein, blood glucose and blood lactate. Interspecies variations as well as variations within some species were observed. The haemoglobin values for all species showed a positive correlation to the corresponding haematocrit values. Relatively low values for haematocrit and haemoglobin were found in cyclostomes, holocephaleans and elasmobranchii compared to the majority of teleosts. Within the teleost group, the haematocrit and haemoglobin levels were positively correlated with the activity of the fish species. The cyclostome Myxine glutimsa L. had a total plasma protein content in the same range as most teleosts, whereas holocephaleans, elasmobranchii and the deep-water teleost Coryphaenoides rupestris Gunnerus showed comparatively low values. Among teleosts some relationship seemed to exist between the total plasma protein level and the activity of the fish species. In addition, a correlation between plasma protein content and levels of blood lipids were noted. Values for blood glucose and blood lactate were found to be lower in cyclostomes, holocephaleans and elasmobranchii than in most teleosts. Higher blood glucose levels were observed in the more active teleost species.  相似文献
