A familiar face is instantly recognized in a crowd. This cannot be achieved through a feature by feature comparison of the observed face with either an average face (norm-based model of face recognition) or with a set of similarly constructed faces stored in memory (exemplar-based model of face recognition). A modified norm-based model is thus proposed. Instead of memorizing an average face, the normal variations for each facial feature are used to construct a multidimensional volume of face-space devoid of unusual features, here defined as features whose metrics lie below the 5th or above the 95th percentiles for that feature. A face consisting of 100 independently variable features will thus have, on average, 10 unusual features. Face identification then becomes exception-reporting. It requires only 10 such rare features to render a given face a one in 1013 faces (P=0.0510=9.8×10−14). In a world containing 6.7×109 people, such a face would be unique. Faces remembered in this way can have their unusual features exaggerated or attenuated without loss of identity. This is the basis of caricatures and anti-caricatures. It also means that individuals belonging to a foreign race, possessing several features with modes beyond the “usual range” of the own-race population, will all look alike. Features that render a face unique in the own-race population are now shared by everyone in the foreign race.Average faces are more beautiful than the faces used in the averaging process. This makes evolutionary sense. Natural selection increases the frequency of fit features at the expense of maladaptive features. “Usual features” are therefore fitter than “unusual features”, and play an important role in mate selection. Such an existing fundamental sexual attribute could easily have been harnessed for the fast and efficient recognition of individuals in the community.  相似文献

The amateur's role in the history of mycology will be traced from its early roots deeply based in the collection of fungi for food to the amateur's present day activities. Attention will be drawn to the most important key amateur figures studying fungi solely or as a wider part of natural history in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the early part of the present century. How their work influenced the development of mycology will be demonstrated. It is often forgotten that the authorities attached to fungal names, including those we use in mycology on a daily basis, often belong to amateurs. The true professions of these amateurs, the net-work of correspondents they developed, etc. will be revealed and discussed in the context of an overall understanding of fungi as organisms. In addition the formation of mycological societies, and how they have become a focus of amateur activity and a source of accurate and disciplined information valuable to professional scientists will be plotted. The kind of work undertaken by amateurs I refer to will be demonstrated by documenting the activities of the British Mycological Society which celebrated its centenary in 1996. The continuing work of this band of workers and their counterparts throughout the world in the closing years of the millennium will be described. It is argued that they are nationally important and necessary resources, despite many governments or their advisers, especially the most influential ones, being under the delusion that systematics is not cutting edge science. It is also emphasized that amateurs will have an even more important role to play in the future as custodians of knowledge—until hopefully opinions change. The essential points of this paper were addressed to the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Mycological Society of Japan held at Kyoto University, Kyoto, on 16–17, May 1998.  相似文献

An apparent paradox exists in the ecology of Antarctic lichens: their net photosynthetic temperature optimum (around 0°C) lies far below the temperature optima of their constituent algae and fungi (around 20°C). To address this paradox, we consider lichens as microbial communities and propose the “community adaptation” hypothesis, which posits that in each thermal regime there is an equilibrium between photosynthetic primary producers (photobionts), and heterotrophic consumers (mycobiont and parasymbiont fungi). This equilibrium, expressed as the producer/consumer ratio (Rp/c), maximizes the fitness of the community. As respiration increases with temperature, more rapidly than does photosynthesis, Rp/c will shift accordingly in warm habitats, resulting in a high-growth temperature optimum for the community (the lichen). This lends lichens an adaptive flexibility that enables them to function optimally at any thermal regime within the tolerance limits of the constituent organisms. The variable equilibrium of producers and consumers may have a similar role in thermal adaptation of more complex communities and ecosystems.  相似文献

The mechanism of recognition by natural killer (NK) cells is still unknown. A dynamic model is formulated describing recognition or NK-sensitive target cells (TCs) by NK cells of NK-like cells. This model does not assume the presence of the specific NK-receptor(s) on the membrane of NK cells and corresponding specific ligands on the NK-sensitive TCs. We suggest: (1) the expression of various kinds of “non-NK receptors” and corresponding ligands (counter-receptors) on the plasma membrane of the same NK cell and, possibly, of TCs (e.g. LFA-1 and ICAM-1-ICAM3, CD2 and LFA-3; receptors for TNF and corresponding ligand etc.); (2) the presence of multiple disorders in the organization of “extracellular matrix-surface membrane-submembrane cytoskeleton” assembly of the NK-sensitive TCs; (3) non-specific primary linking of NK cell with TCs, which induces a transfer of vesicles or membrane fragments from the NK surface to the target cell surface (and perhaps vice versa). These processes may also permit the transfer of many types of receptor and counter-receptor molecules from the surface of one conjugated cell to another by vesicles or membrane fragments. After transferral through the intercellular cleft, the free receptors and counter-receptors will be localized on both cell surfaces at the contact region between conjugated cells. By this model the NK cell can “harpoon” the TC and enhance the binding forces between cells up to the critical level and then switch on killing mechanisms for the TC. By means of this “harpoon” model of cell recognition, it seems possible to explain the nature of the wide polymorphism of TCs which are sensitive to the effect of NK and NK-like cells. A mathematical model of the NK cell cytotoxic reaction is described. The model describes many nonlinear peculiarities of the cytotoxic process and predicts some new phenomena. We suggest new approaches of manipulation of cell membranes which can transform NK-resistant target cells in NK sensitive cells and vice versa.  相似文献

Several analytical methods were compared to evaluate characteristic wood decaying fungi for their potential to depolymerise lignin on spruce wood particles. Wood samples were treated with the white rot fungi Phlebia brevispora, Ceriporiopsis subvermispora, Merulius tremellosus, Pycnoporus sanguineus, Trametes pubescens and with the brown rot fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum. The UV absorbancies of crude ethanol extracts, total extractives content from sequential extraction, ligninolytic enzyme activities, lignin solubilisation and decrease of lignin content were compared. It was shown, that, in early decay stages, UV absorbancies of crude ethanol extracts and total extractives content correlate well with lignin degradation, increase of acid soluble lignin and increased production of ligninolytic enzymes (total peroxidase). Lignin content was determined using FT-NIR spectroscopy as well as by wet-chemical analysis, indicating a very good correlation between the two methods. According to the different analytical methods, the tested fungi can be classified into three categories based on their characteristic behaviour: brown rot, “slow” and “fast” white rot.  相似文献

The state medical board system in the United States plays a crucial role in promoting patient safety and is a primary vessel through which policymakers are able to regulate healthcare. The system’s origins, and how it has evolved in tandem with the practice of medicine generally, have heavily shaped its current structure and scope of activities. In particular, the ethos of a largely self-regulated profession has corresponded to a heavy physician influence. In light of this influence, maintaining legitimacy continues to require careful efforts by the state boards to avoid any perceived professional protectionism.  相似文献

The aim of this work was the development of rapid methods suitable for monitoring the growth of the oleaginous yeast Waltomyces lipofer by means of cell size, vitality and the development of internal lipid droplets throughout different growth phases. Oleaginous yeasts are of interest for the industrial production of lipids and therefore precise monitoring of growth characteristics is needed. This paper provides information about both the method development as well as about examples for their use in monitoring applications. Cell size and shape were determined using FPIA (Flow Particle Image Analysis). Vitality and internal lipid droplets were measured using two independent staining methods for Flow Cytometry. Double staining with cFDA & PI was used for the distinction between “vital”, “sublethal” and “dead” subpopulations, whereas Nile Red allowed the monitoring of lipid accumulation. In this approach the method for vitality measurement was optimized focussing on the staining buffer. An addition of 25 mM citric acid and pH 4.8 revealed to be optimal. The cells in the growth experiment showed a constantly high vitality, which was always above 90%, but slowly decreasing over time. In the course of lipid droplet development it could be seen that the cell size and the Nile Red fluorescence intensity increased. It was demonstrated that the tested method combination provides a powerful tool for rapid fermentation monitoring of the oleaginous yeast W. lipofer, which allows gaining information about the desired growth characteristics in less than 45 min. Further applications for the two methods will be discussed in this article.  相似文献

Mathematical models are developed in order to analyze whether or not social factors, such as, for example, the “social fence” (J. B. Hestbeck, 1982, Oikos 39, 157–163) will stabilize population density: the dynamic interaction between social factors and (dynamic) trophic factors is analyzed. It is concluded that social factors such as the “social fence” tend to stabilize population density; hence, if density cycles (as, e.g., seen in many microtine rodents) are observed in nature, it seems reasonable to conclude that density cycles are driven by, for example, trophic interactions and not by social factors. It is suggested that the “social fence” may explain why so many populations including several microtine populations have fairly stable densities despite the ever-existing destabilizing trophic interactions. Contrary to what is implied by J. B. Hestbeck (1983, “A Mathematical Model of Population Regulation in Cyclic Mammals,” Lecture notes in biomathematics, Vol. 52, Springer-Verlag, Berlin/New York), the analysis presented in this paper demonstrates that seasonal environmental changes are not essential for the generation of regular density cycles. Seasonal changes may, however, be necessary for generating a microtine-like density cycle. Empirical information on microtine rodents relating to the “social fence hypothesis” is discussed.  相似文献

Invasive fungal infections caused by filamentous fungi are devastating diseases that occur in patients with a variety of immunosuppressive conditions. This review focuses on the pathogenesis of the most important invasive mycosis in the human being caused by the filamentous fungi Aspergillus, Fusarium, Scedosporium and mucorales. The first contact between the mould and the patient, the host defense to different fungi, including the role of mucosa in the innate immune system, the whole innate immune recognition receptors, and the pathways connecting innate and adaptive immunity, as well as the virulence factors of fungi, are discussed in this paper.  相似文献

A neural architecture is presented that encodes the visual space inside and outside of a shape. The contours of a shape are propagated across an excitable neuronal map and fed through a set of orientation columns, thus creating a pattern which can be viewed as a vector field. This vector field is then burned as synaptic, directional connections into a propagation map, which will serve as a “shape map”. The shape map identifies its own, preferred input when it is translated, deformed, scaled and fragmented, and discriminates other shapes very distinctively. Encoding visual space is much more efficient for shape recognition than determining contour geometry only.  相似文献

Much can be done to improve the quality of oral and written communication among physicians, particularly among young physicians. Good communication can be taught. Clear writing is only the reflection of clear thinking. The strong determination to make oneself unmistakable will carry the writer a long way toward his goal; indeed, the determination to be unmistakable is far more important to a writer than rules of grammar or composition. Hitherto neglected, remedial instruction in medical writing is a valuable adjunct to medical education, specifically because the conscious and unremitting attempt to make oneself clear has great catalytic influences. This effort releases hidden energies in the medical writer as is suggested by the cryptic but illuminating remark made by one of E. M. Forster''s characters, an old lady who said: “How do I know what I think until I hear what I say.”  相似文献

In this article we present a synthesis of the research affecting pupils' conceptions of photosynthesis and plant nutrition. The main false conceptions of the pupils identi?ed in this literature review are: that green plants ?nd their food in the soil; that water and mineral salts are suf?cient to the growth of a plant; the role of chlorophyll, where the transformation of luminous energy into chemical energy is never evoked; and air as a source of matter, which is never underlined. Secondly, we are going to see that several of these false conceptions have been developed during history. For example, the famous philosopher Aristotle (384–322 BC) thought that plants receive their food from the soil already elaborated. Several centuries later, the physician and chemist Van Helmont (1677–1644) added more precision to Aristotle’s conception while claiming that plants use only water for their growth. Finally, we will see that the analysis of the false theories developed during history will permit in a context of teaching to valorize the false conceptions of the pupils. Indeed, the history of sciences could incite a teacher to valorize his pupils’ false conceptions while considering them as an indication of difficulties that deserve particular pedagogical and didactic tools. The false conceptions constructed by the pupils don’t have to be ignored in a teaching context because they obey particular reasoning rules, sometimes similar to those that once guided some scientific steps. This view, drawing on false conceptions developed during history, gives a dynamic and human picture of the science very distant from the one sometimes carried on by dogmatic teaching.  相似文献

Many plants are able to develop mutualistic interactions with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and/or nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Whereas the former is widely distributed among most of the land plants, the latter is restricted to species of ten plant families, including the legumes. The establishment of both associations is based on mutual recognition and a high degree of coordination at the morphological and physiological level. This requires the activity of a number of signals, including jasmonates. Here, recent knowledge on the putative roles of jasmonates in both mutualistic symbioses will be reviewed. Firstly, the action of jasmonates will be discussed in terms of the initial signal exchange between symbionts and in the resulting plant signaling cascade common for nodulation and mycorrhization. Secondly, the putative role of jasmonates in the autoregulation of the endosymbioses will be outlined. Finally, aspects of function of jasmonates in the fully established symbioses will be presented. Various processes will be discussed that are possibly mediated by jasmonates, including the redox status of nodules and the carbohydrate partitioning of mycorrhizal roots.  相似文献

Medical anthropology is concerned with both the causes and consequences of human sickness, and its various theoretical orientations can be grouped into four major approaches: medical ecology, critical medical anthropology, interpretative medical anthropology, and ethnomedicine. While medical anthropologists of all theoretical persuasions have examined why people get sick, the analysis and understanding of patterns of treatment has been largely confined to ethnomedicine. Historically, more emphasis has been placed on the personalistic or supernatural aspects of ethnomedical systems than on naturalistic or empirical components. While this focus has produced valuable insights into the role of ritual and belief in healing, it has led to the impression that traditional medicine is primarily symbolic. Moreover, it ignores the theoretical bases of traditional healing strategies and the practical means by which most of the world heals itself, namely plants. Recently there has been more interest in the empirical character of ethnomedical systems, and in this paper we consider the role that medical ethnobiology has played in this shift of focus. We begin with a brief history of medical anthropology to illuminate why naturalistic medicine was neglected for so long. We then review exemplary research in two areas of medical ethnobiology – ethnophysiology and medical ethnobotany – that address the study of naturalistic aspects of medical systems. We conclude with suggestions for future research at the interface between medical ethnobiology and medical anthropology that will contribute to both fields.  相似文献

Historians and philosophers of science have furnished a wide array of theoretical-historiographical terms to emphasize the discontinuities among different systems of knowledge. Some of the most famous include Thomas Kuhn’s “paradigm”, Michel Foucault’s “episteme”, and the notion of “styles of reasoning” more recently developed by Ian Hacking and Arnold Davidson. This paper takes up this theoretical-historiographical thread by assessing the values and limitations of the notion of “style” for the historical and philosophical study of science. Specifically, reflecting on various methodological and theoretical concerns prompted by sexuality, translation, and East Asian studies, this paper argues that the heretofore ways in which historians and philosophers of science have used the notion of “style” are severely restricted in terms of its mere applicability to the intellectual history of Western science. The particular example of the translation of “homosexuality” into Chinese during the May Fourth era reveals that the notion of “style” has the potential of carrying a much more dynamic conceptual weight, as when used in “styles of argumentation”. The paper also engages briefly with the historiography of scientific “national styles” and ends with some concluding remarks on the limitations of “social histories from below” and the under appreciated importance of “epistemological histories of possibilities”.  相似文献

This paper examines the effect of inbreeding level of population on the magnitude of inbreeding depression expressed by comparing them between two cultured populations (A and B) in the hermaphroditic animal of the bay scallop Argopecten irradians irradians. Population A is expected to have less genetic variations and higher inbreeding level due to longer cultured history (20 generations) and less “ancestral” individuals (26 individuals) than population B due to shorter cultured history (4 generations) and more “ancestral” individuals (406 individuals). Two groups within each population were produced, one using self-fertilization and one using mass-mating within the same population. Selfed offspring (AS and BS) from two populations both had lower fitness components than their mass-mated counterparts (AM and BM) and exhibited inbreeding depression for all examined traits, e.g. lower hatching, less viability and slower growth, indicating that inbreeding depression is a common feature in this animal. Fitness components in all traits of offspring from population A significantly differed those from population B and the magnitude of inbreeding depression for all traits in population A with higher inbreeding level was significantly smaller than that in population B with lower inbreeding level, indicating that both fitness components and magnitude of inbreeding depression were significantly affected by inbreeding level of populations and genetic load harbored in population A may be partially purged through inbreeding. Moreover, the magnitude of inbreeding depression in the two populations both varied among traits and life history stages. The present results support the partial-dominance hypothesis of inbreeding depression.  相似文献

Most fungi and bacteria express specific mechanisms for the acquisition of iron from the hosts they infect for their own survival. This is primarily because iron plays a key catalytic role in various vital cellular reactions in conjunction with the fact that iron is not freely available in these environments due to host sequestration. High-affinity iron uptake systems, such as siderophore-mediated iron uptake and reductive iron assimilation, enable fungi to acquire limited iron from animal or plant hosts. Regulating iron uptake is crucial to maintain iron homeostasis, a state necessary to avoid iron-induced toxicity from iron abundance, while simultaneously supplying iron required for biochemical demand. Siderophores play diverse roles in fungal–host interactions, many of which have been principally delineated from gene deletions in non-ribosomal peptide synthetases, enzymes required for siderophore biosynthesis. These analyses have demonstrated that siderophores are required for virulence, resistance to oxidative stress, asexual/sexual development, iron storage, and protection against iron-induced toxicity in some fungal organisms. In this review, the strategies fungi employ to obtain iron, siderophore biosynthesis, and the regulatory mechanisms governing iron homeostasis will be discussed with an emphasis on siderophore function and relevance for fungal organisms in their interactions with their hosts.  相似文献
